Even though both games are Guild Wars, they are completely different. A lot of things that worked for GW simply don’t work for GW2.

Oh I know. I was just pointing out that this sort of thing is not without precedent. And since Anet is trying to make GW2 an e-sport…

This would put the revenant at 4 heals, 4 elites and 12 utility skills at the base profession if the 5th is indeed a specialization. Which puts them at a staggeringly low amount of skills in comparison to any other profession. Although this does make me think that each legend WOULD have 5 utility skills each as it would put them at 20 skills in total. Which is much better, but skill types are also rather important when talking about rune synergies. I’d like runes to be much more impactful to your build and your skills which i think Arena net is interested in doing with runes that specifically care about a specific skills type beyond almost universal skills like Signets and Shouts.

wait, why wouldn’t the revenant get 4 signets? Has there been something that says that revenants won’t get signets as their last 4 utility skills?

Since utility skills (and healing and elite skills) are tied to legendaries, they seem to be skill type-less. Now of course there is a chance that the Revenant will get access to a small pool of utility skills (such as signets) regardless of his legendary stances but so far that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Which parts of the lore annoy or depress you?

What I think is sad or annoying about Guild Wars lore is that every discussion on Ascalon, Charr and Humans becomes so personal to people.

If there is one thing that annoys me the most out of this lore is Faolain herself. From what I understood in the TA story, she didn’t start out evil. Yet, in the Living Story, it seems that she was rotten from the start. Granted, she does care about the saplings that were captured by the asura at the time, but that doesn’t seem to be enough to warrant some likeability. I keep questioning myself: “What does Caithe see in Faolain that makes her girlfriend material?”

I agree that there is some work to be done on making their relationship believable. However, remember that the living story step is not their start. They had been around for 2 years already. They traveled the world together. I think, supposedly, Faolain’s fall into nightmare was a very gradual one (in contrast to Cadeyrn who was very nightmare-y from the start). Therefore, supposedly, Faolain and Caithe fell in love when Faolain was still a different person. Over time they drifted more and more apart even though their love for eachother was still there. Which is what makes the whole thing so terrible for Caithe. Again, I’m not saying the game is convincing in this regard.

There are 5 legends

How are you sure of that?

It was datamined

But how are you sure that they all are “base”? One could be for the specialisation.

Ever since the datamine my guess has been that Glint was the elite specialization legend. Although, Ventari with it’s connection to the jungle and the sylvari (and thus to the current story and the expansion) is also a contender I guess.

Except you forget that each trait line is linked with a legend limiting that customization even further then you think.

That’s not entirely true. They are sort-of linked thematically to a legend, yes. But it is like saying blood magic is tied to daggers. Yes, you can use the two together but you don’t have to.

Diovid.9506

The Concern I have it the lack of customization of the revenant’s bar. You choose a mainhand weapon and an offhand. Then you choose your Legends. So you are effectively making 5 choices for your build in total IF you’re going to be making that much choice and decided on a two handed weapon. To me, this is concerning.

Except the majority of customization for all professions comes from traits, stats, runes and sigils. This is also the case for Revenants.

Ascalonian Royal Line is broken... or is it?

in Lore

Posted by: Diovid.9506

Diovid.9506

My understanding is that Kryta is supporting Ebonhawke for the simple fact of being a human city in need of aid. Remember that humanity is in decline and common sense dictates you can’t go into petty squabbles over who-rules-who when you have other races that could wipe out yours living nearby.

However, just like the queen has no authority over Lion’s Arch’s residents, she has no say over what goes on in Ebonhawke or any Ascalonian lands.

So assuming that either Samuelsson or some other descendant pops out of the woodwork, we still have a royal line running in Ascalon.

As pointed out a couple of times above, Jennah is actually regent of Ascalon.

I’m not sure if it is anything written there (assuming you are referring to the things in the band across his chest), but that centaur seems awesome.

By the text from the tweet it may be about the “Challenging content” mentioned before.

“Life can be painful, but do not fear the trials you will face. Hard ground makes stronger roots.”

That quote is a literal quote from Ventari. Ventari is a datamined legendary for the revenant. We haven’t seen most of the Revenant’s trait lines, weapons and legendaries. 1+1+1 = further information on the revenant.

Centaurs do not work as a playable race for a variety of reasons (skill animations, emotes, armors, swimming, jumping, lore). Besides, Anet already confirmed there will not be a new playable race this expansion.

More than likely it is either the Druid or the elite specialization of the Revenant (channeling Ventari).

I know that we’ll be meeting with the Exalted in HoT and they look mightily like Mursaat but if they’re one and the same why change their name at all?

I think the primary reason why the name Exalted is used is to keep players speculating on who they are and what their role in the expansion is.

Where is promised challenging HOT content?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Diovid.9506

Diovid.9506

I’ve already told you and you’ve already ignored it. I know people who do like challenging content that were slow starters. I don’t care if you believe me or not, but it’s true.

What I think most people want is challenging content that they can beat without devoting their lives to it. Because everyone has different levels of skill. So what’s challenging to them may not be challenging to you.

Just because people have different levels of what they find challenging doesn’t mean they don’t want challenge. They may, however, not want YOUR challenge.

Challenge isn’t a objective, it’s subjective.

I don’t know who you’re responding to here, because you don’t seem to be responding to anything I’ve said. I’m not talking about what constitutes ‘challenging’ content, or what I personally find challenging, nor am I contesting your honesty. Where is that coming from?

I’ll try once more, even though I don’t know how I can make it any more plain than I already have.

Anet changed the starting part of the game in an attempt to retain more new players. They did this by simplifying things. This implies that the sort of player they want to retain likes simplified things.

Now, they’re talking about adding more ‘challenging’ content with HoT. Who is this ‘challenging’ content FOR? The new players retained by NPE? Those players for whom they expressly changed the starting part of the game? If those players stayed with the game because they liked the simplified content early on, does it follow that they — the majority, not just the handful of exceptions you know personally — will want ‘challenging’ content now? And if not, what happens then?

Are there enough old players left for HoT?

NPE is not about retention. It is about hooking new players. HoT is about retention (as are Dry Top and the Silverwastes). I don’t really understand how you can think otherwise.

Let's Speculate: Role of Druid?

in Ranger

Posted by: Diovid.9506

Diovid.9506

The Druids are much more likely to be teaching us druidic skills out of desperation than anything else. Mordremoth is a crazy threat, like all the Elder Dragons are, and spreading around their mojo is likely to be the only way they can see to really protect the jungle.

This is sort of off-topic considering this is more about lore than about mechanics but I think there is a real possibility that you’re wrong. If the druids from GW1 are any indication there is a chance that the druids are actually pro-dragon. We know that dragons are part of a natural cycle where dragons sleep —> magic increases --> dragons wake up —> magic decreases --> dragons sleep. And we know from Ogden and the Apostate that screwing up that cycle might negatively influence the entire world. We know that druids believe in balance and nature (including death and decay) and are actually kind of uncaring about the consequences that might have on others. We know that modremoth’s recent activity is actually causing an increase in plant-life in the maguuma jungle (conversely it is possible that the drought that has plagued the maguuma region was caused by him sleeping). Put all this together and the druids might not actually want us to kill the dragons because they believe dragons and their activities are a neccesary part of the world.

Edit: It would make for a nice contrast between how Itzel view nature and the dragons on the one hand and how the druids view those on the other.

Mastery activation

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Diovid.9506

Dont think they current mastery system is anywhere near how the final will work, saw a dev state somewhere that mastery progression in no way will be tied xp gain, but by doing stuff in the world, sorry i am not sure where, but i am sure someone else kept track of it and can provide a proper quote for it

The mastery system uses (and will use) two different recourses: xp and mastery points. Mastery points are not tied to xp but are indeed gained by ‘doing stuff in the world’. However, you will also need xp.

As the original blog post states there are two steps to training masteries. Step 1:

To train a specific Mastery track, you must first unlock it by spending Mastery points. Mastery points are awarded for completing various pieces of game content. Things like completing a chapter in your personal story, completing certain achievements, reaching hard-to-find locations, overcoming challenging encounters, excelling at adventures found within the Heart of Maguuma, or earning 100% completion for a map will award Mastery points. Each Mastery point can be earned once per account, so while Mastery points allow you to unlock Mastery tracks, they are also an indicator of how much of the game you’ve experienced.

Step 2:

Once you’ve unlocked a Mastery track tier with Mastery points, you can begin training that Mastery. Mastery tracks are trained by gaining experience while the Mastery track is slotted on the Mastery training bar

Diovid.9506

Hi there,
I try to keep it short this time!
So after Southsun Cove, Dry Top and the Silverwastes, with the last two being literally a prelude to HoT, I wanted to ask if this is the “future” of how all lvl 80 maps will be like in HoT. Heart Quests are pretty dead by now and we get decreasingly Vistas + Skill Point challenges. It’s all about rushing between Dynamic Events.

The beta map was rather confusing and felt a bit like a less optimal Silverwaste copy. And since the events on the map are essential to unlock masteries; I can’t see all my 8 characters + the revenant to grind events all day long right now. Maybe I will do that with 2 characters, but that’s all the event grind I might want to do, seeing how slow the EXP gain was during those 2 hours.

So… no more “classic but likable” heart quests in the future…?

Masteries are account wide aren’t they? Do on one character, unlocks for all yeah?

Mastery points are account wide. I’m not sure about the actual masteries.

An Honest HoT Assessment

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Diovid.9506

Diovid.9506

I honestly don’t have an issue as a WVW’er in purchasing an expansion, but I do have issue with having to grind PVE to bring all 9 of my 80’s back to competitive status for doing my WVW with those characters (aka.. the new mastery system/class skills).

My hope is that there will be alternatives to having to learn mushroom jumping and gliding skills to get the mastery’s needed for my competitive wvw play. Mind you I like exploring new maps and doing a little PVE from time to time, I just don’t find having to grind for skill sets to accomplish it fun. And that’s the fear I have of this new mastery system.

masteries wont effect WvW play, you may be thinking of hero points, which will require skill challenges.
masteries as of right now, is PVE progression

So all the WvW would actually get from HoT is the elite specialisations.

And access to the Revenant and possibly new stat combinations and new skins. Hmm.. That’s kinda it I think.

Reaper Shout: Suggestion for a Support Shout

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Diovid.9506

Diovid.9506

As has been mentioned by others many times before, the core necromancer needs more support. The necromancer shouldn’t get that change via it’s elite specialization or else everyone will be forced to be a reaper. It seems like Arenanet has listened to this remark and is reworking blood magic somewhat to fit that ideal.

“Rise!” is just plain bad (and no matter which summon is chosen, AI isn’t great to begin with)

This is no argument to get rid of it. Instead it is an argument to change the skill and/or improve the AI. Personally I am looking forward to trying it out.

Yeah. I agree.
We’ve got all these questions (where were you? what happened? Can we now know where you got that sword from!?) and all he does is grunt and growl. So you can’t fault him for being consistent.
Still it’s possible that there’s more going on here, and we’ll later learn the details. Sort of a In medias res style thing? Maybe Rytlock is working for the human gods and has been sent to the jungle to do something.

Or (lets hope not) he just popped out of the mists and will not hang around as some secondary character.

Rytlock got his sword (named Sohothin) from killing King Adelburn during the raids of Ascalon, and he was gone for so long because he went into the mists to retrieve his sword after it was lost preforming a ritual to end the ghosts that haunt the Charr, just some lore knowledge for you ;P

Actually, you’re wrong. Sohothin was Rurik’s sword, not Adelbern’s. Sohothin was in the hands of Rurik when well… something happened in guild wars 1 (spoilers). We don’t know how it got from where Rurik was to Rytlock. Adelbern’s sword is Magdear and we retrieve it in the dungeon Ascalonian Catacombs. It was broken but Eir was having it fixed by a norn smith, who presumably still has it.

The only thing missing is the ability to put away your pet during a fight. Necro can have multiple pets out or none during a fight. If they can balance Necro like that they can do the same with Ranger.

Except minions are healing/utility/elite skills of the necro. The ranger’s pet is his profession mechanic. Asking them to balance around not using the pet is like asking them to balance around not using death shroud or attunement changing or burst skills. It is not going to happen. Too many ranger traits, ranger weapon skills and ranger healing/utility/elite skills rely on using your pet.

Diovid.9506

Well, actually support is exaclt the thing ranger is missing. So, I think that it fits perfectly on ranger. DPS you say? as if Longbow/Gs was not enough of dps for a ranger.

Well, It is not a obligatory to play new elite specializations, and it will have more specializations in future, so it simple have no reason to stop playing your ranger. A lot of people dislike their main professions specializations (I’ll not change my guardian for trap things), but that don’t compromise anyone gameplay.

You can still play your ranger exactly how you do today, specialization its not the unique thing that HoT will bring on

But what new skill type fits the support role?
Stances? Tricks? Gadgets?

Mantras, consecrations, meditations, glyphs or cantrips are more likely I think. Stances, tricks and gadgets are neither nature-y nor magic-y enough to fit the druid.

It covered all major features, yes, but not things like: How many zones are there? How large are the zones? How content-dense are the zones? Will there be new fractals? Will there be new dungeons? How many fractals and dungeons will there be? And so on. So no, the presentation did not cover ‘everything HoT will have’.

Edit: And before you say ‘but why didn’t he announce that there will be new dungeons if he supposedly announced all major features?‘, well.. he did mention ’challenging group content’ as one of the major features, without elaborating what that entails exactly. She does? I completely missed that (I blame selective reading <.<). But then, is she considered the legitimate ruler by the people of Ebonhawke (because those guys seem happy about the peace but not too happy about Jennah’s soldiers and stuff) or is what the Queen of England is to Canada?

Considering she has troops in Ebonhawke and she sends resources to Ebonhawke it is not quite like the relationship between the Queen of England and Canada. Consider also that the foreign affairs between Ebonhawke and the Charr are directly decided upon by Kryta (i.e. the peace treaty between Jenna and the Charr has a big effect on the relationship between Ebonhawke and the Charr).

There is some speculation that the Guardian (and the Paragon and Monk classes that are it’s GW1 predecessors) draws power from the preservation blood stone.

Other than that, there’s this quote:

With the turmoil in Elona and the spread of the Order of Whispers into other lands, more Paragon teaching showed elsewhere in Tyria. These teachings melded with other traditions, and over time, the guardians and their abilities can be found throughout the world and among all the races. They are not tied to a particular race, philosophy, or group of gods but rather to a larger concept of proactive defense, of taking the fight to a foe and protecting those you fight alongside while appealing equally to humanity’s defensive nature and the charr’s desire to rule the battlefield.
