Engineer builds flexible?

It really depends on the build and the player as well. It really takes a lot more concentration to play a non-stealth class.

The thumper turret is fine, but making it cripple won’t exactly fix the problems with our builds. That being, dedicating every rune/sigil/trait to boosting damage (and being the most defenseless glass cannon in game) or being a jack of all trades (and pretty bad at what counts).

In any case, I have noticed this problem with the engineer. Most people who make alts will notice this at some point, but if they enjoy the engineer they’ll still play it. My engineer is still my main despite all his faults, I just like him more than any other profession, but I don’t think he’s efficient or good at anything in particular. That’s what mesmer/thief/warrior/guardian/elementalist alts are for.

i think they are all the same to allow downed and downed’s teammate to time the stomp to avoid/interrupt it.
some kind of “balancing” the stomp.

But then, don’t you find it funny how all the downed states aren’t equal?

they are 2 different things.
the only thing i find sad is that 2 downed players can kill 1 alive opponent, that ranger has advantage in 1v1 downed vs downed. engi can have advantage in downed mode with a normal toolbelt skill.

Your original query was that it wasn’t balanced. So I’m going to address that properly. Just like the current stomp, the end of the stomp would be when the player is actually taken to the grave. This gives the player the opportunity to set-up their escape. And just like right now, Thieves will find it easy to escape and Ele’s will find it easy as well and the rest of the profs will just have to do their interrupting thing.

Right. In the current iteration, you see the characters hand glow. Here, you could add the hand glow, on TOP of the fact that for a Necro you see hands coming our of the ground pulling the downed player in, or for a Mesmer you could see a phantasm he never really uses, or for a Thief, he’s bending over to search for something.

The animations would be quite distinct.

My other counter argument is like I asked above, then why aren’t downed states equal? I feel like stomps are the weirdest thing for someone to think needs uniformity (part from the time it takes to do them that is. They may look different but they have to take the same amount of time)

They could take as long as the current finisher. Interrupting the finisher is simple, interrupt the player. Without stability or block, the interrupt will de-summon the pack of wolves or stop the meteor from being cast.

I know this was brought up in Beta but I just thought I’d bring it back to the limelight again just incase it was too far down the list.

I know this is not as important as Custom Arenas or Ladders but I feel that it would definitely add flavour to the game and spectators (when spectating and casting is added) will definitely find it pretty cool.
So to get our juices flowing and our brain muscles flexing, let’s give some examples of what we’d like to see if Anet were to implement profession specific finishers.

Here are mine;
Warrior; Uses whatever he’s holding and swings it vertically from the ground upwards; with a blunt weapon he’s knocking the person clean out and with an edged weapon he’s gutting them.

Mesmer; Summons and Illusionary executioner that slowly raises his axe to chop the head of the downed player. OR
A more hilarious one would be, Mesmer summons a bunch of clones that proceed to beat the living crap out of the downed player.

Necro; Summons Grasping hands that slowly pull the downed enemy into the earth. .

Guardian; Summons Light from the heavens to burn the downed player to ashes.

Ranger; Summons a pack of wolves to feast on the downed player.

Engineer; Places a timed explosive on the downed player, then walks away softly whilst the explosion happens behind him. NOTE: Cool guys don’t look at explosions.

Thief; Checks downed body for anything he can steal and when he doesn’t find anything he proceeds to shoot you in the head. OR Stab you.

Elementalist; Summons a meteor from the heavens to crush the downed player.

To be honest, I think they should make all downed states the same in SPvP. This would break away from what they have in WvW and PvE but it will at least ensure that the movement based professions don’t win oout most of the time.

I personally still want profession specific finishers. And I know the developers could go crazy with that too.

It’s not good design.

When ever you start meddling with the meta by creating counters to something you end up having to create a counter to the counter. This ends up going in circles; counter to a counter to a counter to a counter.

Blizzard devs understood this at one point and turned away from it because they saw that they would end up changing abilities forever. I’m not a fan of the rock paper scissors approach. I find it uninspiring and uncreative. It spells lazy game design.

I don’t know how to solve this problem, so I’m going to make an ability that counters it. Instead of punishing bad play, they punish builds by making another build counter a build.

Its stupid.

There’s a counter to the counter already. It’s called dodge.

“Deal extra damage based on the amount of boons currently on your target”
A mechanic like this shouldn’t be relevant against a build with a single boon, or a teammate that was granted one or two boons from an ally.
It’s only truly strong against bunkers who can have 4-5 boons at the same time, and for a long duration.
Also, giving all/ most professions boon-stripping mechanics would make them play way too similar to a necro/ mesmer.

I believe it’s just Warriors, Thieves, Mesmers and Necros getting boon hate skills and traits. I don’t believe any other class would make sense.

It makes sense for Warriors, Thieves and Mesmers because they are usually the burst classes and reducing their damage for people without boons and increasing their damage for people with boons, would make a lot of sense.

If you solo Q then you don’t have to imagine 3 engi teams. You will have to play and win with them haha

Most engies are “follow the leader” with their P/P HGH builds of face roll chug and shrug. They don’t count when it comes to trying to play with 3 engies. Give me 2 more good engies and we’ll wipe the floor with everyone and anyone.

Whilst Xeph was asking good questions, Nero was asking deep questions himself. Grouch is all about making the show move forward so I wouldn’t kick him for not asking hard hitting questions and remember he did call them out on how, when they spoke about the rating system last time, it sounded like they were going to split organized teams from solo queuers.
Nero definitely asked good questions. Pushing Anet to explain their process is definitely good questioning because really, that’s what you guys complain all the time. People always say their process sucks so why not get an idea of their process so we know if it really sucks.
Xeph asked good question but Nero and Grouch did their thing just as well.

I appreciate the offer, but I did this as an exercise to show that our access to control doesn’t make us viable. You know, the whole control/damage/support thing they’re doing with GW2? Many posters claim that our control abilities can make up for low weapon damage. Well, now imagine a Greatsword Warrior with this kind of control. They could kill you just with their 1-5 abilities. An Engineer using this much control can’t close the deal.

Unfortunately, I believe you are wrong. If you decide that you are going full control and you ignore damage, doesn’t that mean you won’t be killing anything? Most of the control abilities in this game don’t hit very hard and using them as a way to kill something fast isn’t going to work.

I think this is a case of knowing your role. A control character can not be a heavy damage char if he doesn’t specc or play that way. Like I said, if you want something that can do a bit of both, I’ve got 2 builds that could help but complaining that you can’t do enough damage when you didn’t specc for it is a bit weird if you ask me.

Oh dude, PBR doesn’t CC you and with the right combo, it’s amazingly fun.

But is it worth the 45 second cool down? Nope.

To me it is. On the build I run it on, it’s a 36 second cooldown and it’s totally worth it.

I decided to try a control build with high power and crit.

Rifle, Med Kit, Net Turret, Personal Battering Ram, Throw Mine, and Crate.

Most of my 1v1 fights went something like this, with some variation:
Use hip shot waiting for twitchy player (99% of players) to waste dodge rolls on pointless movement. Net Shot, Throw Mine, Blunderbuss, Overcharged shot towards Mine, then PBR to the face (*hilarious btw—hoping I caused some broken mice and keyboards over this combo). Drop Net Turret, Net Shot again, Net Turret overcharge, cripple runners with Launch PBR, rinse repeat.

The point is, even with a power crit build, I could not do enough damage to kill players before they got annoyed and disengaged, or figured out they couldn’t faceroll me forcing them to open a deadly can of whoopass on me. The latter I found VERY irritating, because obviously other profs have the tools to decimate me and most of the time are too lazy to focus on winning enough to do it. Get a faceroller angry though, and watch out!

(*hilarious because you knock them back into the mine which knocks them towards you again, then you respond with PBR knocking them away again. this causes them to eat dirt for a few seconds and makes the ragdoll graphics glitch in entertaining ways)

TL;DR
When people come on here talking about the amount of control Engineers have, I have news for them. It is meaningless without the damage to back it up. Maybe in a world where people actually focus marked targets, but we all know how useful that is.

I see your frustration and I have two builds for you that could help. Also if you show me the build you used, I might be able to help give it more damage.
So the question is, do you want me to show you the builds or do you want me to help modify your build to do more damage?

Turret's ability to attack the closest first

The turret’s inability to fire at the target you are currently targeting is a weird issue to me especially when all other classes with pets always have their pets aggro the target that is either attacking them or being attacked. The engineer on the other hand have their Turrets attacking the target that’s closest to them.

I know how to deal with this issue but the fact is, it takes quite a bit of effort sometimes to pull this off. It’s actually quite frustrating when fighting characters with multiple pets or even just one pet, one single misplacement of your turret and it aggros the pet instead of the player you are targeting.

I know that turret’s generally in reality function by targeting whatever is closest to them first or whatever comes into their sight first but the truth is, that doesn’t really work in this game where multiple targets will fly by your screen. Think about it, I’m placing down the turret for a SPECIFIC purpose, I want it to immob that guy over there not this guy over here. Why can’t they be built in such a way that they attack whoever you attack first AND THEN move on to the closest target? It might not be as instant as I’d like, but it sure beats having it immobilizing a jagged horror that suddenly spawned from my teammate’s dead corpse.

Since speed boosts don’t stack either and only the biggest effect takes priority, I think it would be naive to think anet would do anything different for damage reduction.

Considering the Guardian can get 43% damage reduction without the need for the aura, I’d definitely call it a mis-step if they didn’t allow you to stack it.

Also, speed boosts would become overly stupid if they could stack. Some people can already move 50% faster without the need for swiftness, have it stack and you’re just asking for trouble.

Hey guys, this is the first entry to my “Spirit Watch Guide” Series. In this episode I take a look at the Thief and the Ele. The link will take you straight to the Ele portion of the video but if you want to see the Thief portion just move the knob right to the start of the video.

This guide shows one way you can play the ele on spirit watch. Through the amount of slows and hard CC’s you have, you can easily slow down the capture of the orb by a significant amount.

This Ele’s ideal positioning is at the enemy’s close point, allowing for the ele to be in front of the orb runner so abilities like Gust are more effective.

You can also run the orb with this build because of the amount of CCs you have but it won’t be as fast as the off-hand dagger Ele and to be honest, you’re better positioned as the helper to the orb carrier rather than being the carrier yourself.

I could seriously write my own blog post against this post but I won’t because I can’t be bothered.

Whilst I agree that spamming certain skills like HS shouldn’t be possible, I feel that there’s enough in each profession to counter that.

On your team deathmatch suggestion; Truth is, I feel it could still work even without a healer. If you think about how people play now on Capture point maps with Signet of Undeath and Illusion of life, you can easily see how people will play TDMs as well. It could even get to the point where people will call you a noob if you don’t have a skill for rezzing people just like they did in GW1. Of course everyone is going to want to go for damage at first but once a good team starts whooping everyone’s kitten with their ability to work as a team and rezz in each other (as they do now!), everyone is going to follow that bandwagon and say that it is the best way to do things.

On your assumption that condition builds won’t work in TDMs, I would wager that you’re wrong. Unless a group is entirely built around condition removal, I don’t think there will any problem dealing condition damage. There’s only so many conditions you can remove when a person can reapply them as soon as you throw them away.

On your hating on Null Field and other skills like it. Arenanet had been talking about two-pronged skills for a LONG time. In fact, the ele skill; Geyser was said to be a knockback skill at the area of effect whilst healing allies (and that would have been a much funner version of the skill if you ask me) and even Trident was supposed to knock people back but that didn’t happen either. So you complaining about it now, is like you didn’t know much about how they intended the game to be.

Build Wars 2

But seriously, it’s not build wars because a class has a lot of condi cleanses.

I know, it’s bullkitten that some classes are extremely strong against conditions and some extremely weak against them. Personally I think they need to take a look at adding more personal condi cleanses on classes that need them (warriors, mesmers) and less AoE ones

This game’s balance with regards to conditions is in the kittenter 30x over.

The Mesmer has 4. I think that’s enough. The warrior has 2 and one of them remove all conditions and can be on a short cooldown.

Play the first build in this guide. No amount of condi cleansing can deal with how fast you apply conditions on that build. Also it has combo-field might-stacking so you look like a pro.

Sick of 3v5, 4v5, and other unfair odds

you think? of course that is one of the problems, the other is people joining and seeing they are on a full pug and facing a full premade and quitting, or seeing they are on a 5v4 and quitting, making it 5v3. And since you don’t punish them what do they lose? the invisible rating they don’t care about? They log-off for 10 mins avoid a spawn camp stomping then log back in.

Learn from Rift, if you get DC’d their system gives you short amount of time to re-boot/log back in and puts you in the same warfront you were in. If you don’t log back in quickly it fills the spot with a new player and when that person eventually does log back in they have a 30-min deserter debuff and can’t queue for pvp. I’m guessing just another thing your system isn’t built to do.

If someone is constantly DC’ing due to crappy ISP or quitting without leaving their roster they should be punished and stick to hotjoin rather than making 4 people suffer a curb stomping 5v4 matchup.

The sad thing is this has been an issue basically since release and doesn’t sound like you have any fixes in the works. Like i said in another thread this is something Rift did a hotfix for shortly after release. And I only use Rift as an example because it was one of the more recently released mmos. pretty much every other mmo pvp also has quitter debuffs/penalties.

The two problems deserve different solutions. If a player is in queue for a bit, but needs to log off to do something else, that player shouldn’t be punished because they didn’t leave the roster first. This is a completely fixable problem. Punishing people who knowingly dodge is a much more difficult problem.

But if the player leaves the team to fight a 4v5 regardless of whether their reasons are noble or not, they just put 4 other people in a bad situation. And really, in GW1 you had a strike out 3 times and you’re out type of solution, why can’t that be applied to GW2?

"Solo" Que

We of course understand that solo players would prefer a separate queue from premade teams, and it isn’t off the table as a future improvement. The trade off here, besides the extra development time, is that high rated solo queuers would get a better experience (never facing premades), at the expense of all team queuers getting a worse experience (longer queue times)

Right now it seems like I’m constantly pit against people who know what their doing whilst being teamed up with people who DON’T know what they are doing. It’s a bit saddening really.

Although, I may just be overreacting because I’m tired of the crappy losses to full teams or otherwise.

Whilst Bunker Eles are good, they aren’t unkillable and when they are running the orb they even more vulnerable. Also Warriors are pretty good at running the orb.

Why is it that every other class gets tiny adjustments to abilities the devs think are OP, but every time the devs think an Engineer ability is too strong it gets the “to the ground” treatment.

If I remember correctly, people are still using the grenade kit even after the first nerf to the damage. For a time people stopped using it but it still came back to become the crowd’s favourite again in condition builds and high damage builds.

This nerf does nothing to change that. A 10 second cooldown is NOTHING.

In TPvP, 10 second is a lot.

Maybe in PvE it’s okay, but mostly anything is playable in PvE.

It’s not the worse nerf ever, but kitten if it’s not annoying.

Why would you nerf the engineer? Removing a lot of build possibilities?.

When I get in-game I’ll check this out but personally, I don’t see a problem. There are ways around the cooldown and in fact, there are different ways to use the build that would still make it effective.

Not sure why they felt the need to buff toolkit even further. It already was one of the top two kits before, if not the best one alltogether.

Improvements to FT and EG are more than welcome, maybe they’ll be useful outside of “I play my way no matter what” gimmick builds now.

Not happy about Med kit stowing, like Engineers need even more key strokes.

Do you remember the time Toolkit wasn’t on anybody’s radar? If you don’t, I do. The buff for the kit is not even that great, confusion is one of the weakest conditions in the game and only really affects Thieves and Rangers who like to spam 1 all the time. Also if you think FT and EG were only good for gimmick builds, you’ll be surprised how close to OP they’ve come with what they’ve done with this combo.

The kit refinement thing is beyond moronic, 100nades will now work like this, switch to toolkit, pull with magnet, switch to nades – oh 10 sec cooldown, no grenade barrage…

Didn’t they state they didn’t want to break builds? One word ‘clueless’.

You are overreacting. 10 seconds isn’t a long time and I should know, I have a whole build built around a 10 second cooldown.

What the Ranger Needs

I wasn’t really expecting them to recreate the same level of options that the Engineer has, just something close to it. The Ranger really lacks build variety and anything greater than what it has now would be great.

With regards to Disrupting Accuracy, I think adding an internal cooldown, like everything else in GW2, could stop it from seeming too OP. For instance, every time a daze occurs you can’t daze for another 5 seconds or something like that.

What the Ranger Needs

Preparations.

I know that Ranger can be very effective as it is but it lacks the wide variety of possiblities that classes like the Engineer enjoy. What I’m suggesting is a series of skills that will help develop a new way to play the Ranger.

I know that Anet is reworking the Ranger to a certain degree to add more build viability to them but I’m actually thinking, just adding a subset of skills under the header of Preparation would open up a lot of new builds.

For instance, I was thinking of a Preparation version of splinter shot, where all your next 5 arrows deal 25% less damage but break up into 5 projectiles mid-flight or an alternate version would be, your next 5 attacks break apart when they hit a target dealing damage to nearby foes. Can only be used with bows.

I was also thinking about how this could play out for bow users and I imagined a scenario where a shortbow user would spam auto-attack on a target facing them only to hit another target with splinter shot from behind, inadvertently stacking bleeds on them.

Another preparation I thought of was Disrupting Accuracy; For 30 seconds you have a 15% chance to daze and your pet has a 30% chance to cause 1 second of confusion. If your target has confusion, your chance to cause daze becomes 30%.

I wasn’t planning this but this preparation would allow traits like Moment of Clarity to come into the limelight. So yea, it would be pretty cool to see that.

Another Preparation that I thought would be pretty cool is; Mis-fire, your next 5 attacks miss but your target becomes confused. Confusion lasts for 5 seconds. Synergizing with the preparation above.

I’m pretty sure there are other cool types of preparations the guys at Anet could come up with but these are the ones that I’d definitely like to see or at least I’d like to see something more well thought-out than this.

So, tell me your thoughts and what types of skills you would like to see.

Rangers are universally hated in PvE

Rangers have one thing that no other class has, a 15 second water field that provides regeneration and condition removal. If you guys know anything about combos (I do hope you do)you can have other classes do blast finishers into your healing spring to perform AoE heals and this can be crucial in fights where your team just took a wallop to the face.

Does Lightning Reflexes not even work properly either? If it does manage to break stun, it just makes me do kitten roll on the spot and I’m still stuck there for like 3/4 of a second

Lighning reflexes does not break immobilize only stuns. If you want imobilize removal take renewal as your break instead, you will lose the dodge though.

I would say your correct on this but the theif’s “roll for initative” Only states it breaks stuns yet people use it you get out of entangle that immobilizes. Also Lightning reflexes will sometimes work and break you out of immobs and evade backwards. It just isnt consistant, along with Quick shot.

Roll for Ini removes immobilize.

EXPLOIT/BUG REPORT: Stowing pets cancels their cooldowns allowing you to use their skills even though the skill looks like it is still on cooldown.

Have you ever found yourself playing your Charr character and finding yourself wanting to scare the hell out of your foes with a mighty roar AND THEN finding yourself coming up short because you just typed /roar and nothing happened? Well, I have and I want to change that, scratch that, I want Arenanet to change that. We all know a Charr without a /roar is a Charr without teeth or claws and a Charr without teeth or claws isn’t a Charr at all.

So Anet, pls make it happen.

GW2 Lag spikes make it impossible to play

I’ve also been experiencing continuous rubber banding and lag spikes all over the place. When I think my character is out of arms way, I find out to my dismay that the game thinks I’m still standing in the fire. It’s really saddening and frustrating and I hope you guys can patch this soon.

Selecting the Amount you wish to buy in PvP

Just like on the trading post or on the crafting station, could we get an amount needed selection tab on all the merchants in PvP? It has been a bit straining to my lazy self (and finger) when I constantly click the same item to buy 250 of them (and yes I do actually buy 250 of certain items that I use often).

Another would be, could we get something like GW1’s PvP armour and weapon selection screen in PvP? This way we can select our the armour we wish to wear and the runes without having to go back to 3 different NPCs,

Adding an evade or Leap Finisher to Acid Bomb

When using the skill Acid Bomb, I find it a bit weird that it isn’t considered a leap finisher like the Mesmer’s phase retreat or even an evade like the Ranger’s Quick Shot or Thief’s Disabling shot. The skill just feels like it’s missing one of those two things (or possibly both) when I use it.

This topic is just a suggestion to anet that they add one of these things (or both) to a skill that feels like it needs one of them.

Mesmer Changes Suggestion

The thread title might sound like another “nerf the mesmer” thread but really this isn’t about nerfing their damage or anything like that but rather it is about removing something I personally find ‘confusing’ about the class.

When fighting a mesmer, I find that I cannot tell the difference between a mesmer clone walking up to me for a shatter and a clone just walking up to me to attack me. It might seem easy but you don’t notice the shattering until it starts and usually it’s too late then. The change I propose for the shatters is to make them stand still, glow then teleport directly to the target to explode. I believe this will make mesmer shatters easier to spot and easier to dodge but also gaining an element of a larger spike.

The second change I’d like to suggest is a chage to blurred frenzy, I believe it is quite a defensive skill on a short cooldown and the cooldown should either be increased or the skill should be change to not give invulnerability but rather cause an evade for 2 seconds. The evasion change will make them vulnerable to “on hit” procs like retaliation and fiery aura and I believe either of the above changes will encourage smarter use of the skill rather then the constant spam of the 2 sec invulnerability every 10 seconds that seems to be happening now.

These are my suggestions and obviously just my opinion on the matter of mesmers.
