Sylvari relationships with other races

in Sylvari

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

I get the feeling that Sylvari generally are more interested in what’s inside a person than what their outer shape is. This may come from their connected empathy. However, that leads to the question: Since they can’t “feel” non-Sylvari, might they find that off-putting in terms of deeper intimacy than casual friendship?

To Madora: I don’t think homophobia is nearly as rampant in Tyrian humans as in Terran ones. They don’t have the same religious and cultural history that created the prejudice here. Plus they have other sentient races to deal with, making any other human seem far more “of the tribe” as it were. Humans might look very askance at interracial love matches while not caring one bit about variations on inter-human consenting adult couples.

Plus humans tend to adopt bits and pieces of cultures that interest them. The sylvari have been out and about long enough to get a lot of imitators. I wonder if the sylvari lesson tends towards courtly chivalric love, or towards free love? -grins-

(For those who haven’t taken classes in Arthurian romance literature, courtly love is the hopeless adoring from afar that makes a knight go off on quests to prove himself).

Clothes that cover Glow

I also would like the glow visible more often in more outfits.

But this post is a slight aside to Soulmyr: I was perplexed by T2 Light shoulders as well until I realized they let me have the shoulder sprouts even if I wanted the T1 chestpiece. So they get covered up in the actual set but give you more mix and match flexibility.

I had everything so muted — I just followed the dev hint about the sound mixer and my ears got blasted, so upping that is the trick (at least for me).

I took GW2 to 100% in the mixer, then lowered it and lowered it and still at around 30% it was so loud I had to move the sliders down. I am looking forward to getting to LA and actually hearing the Halloween music.

Charr witch armor preview

Redenaz (is) right, Guhracie. I learned this a month or two ago. You can preview an outfit even if you don’t have it, bring up the TP (or dyes you have not used yet in inventory), and preview the dyes on that outfit. You can even right click on individual armor items or dyes in the preview window to un-preview them without fully resetting the image.

That’s great for figuring out dye channels and for mix and matching different parts of armor off the TP.

edit: I have no idea why it kittened the “is” after the poster’s name.
Edit edit: actually I do. It read it as an abhorrent political party of the 1930’s and 1940’s.

My human mesmer has the AC gear now, though she’s using the human T2 cultural mask (human T2 actually is good all around for Mesmer imo). I like the venetian feel of the AC stuff — she has dual rapiers with it.

T2 chest with Conjurers Pants is pretty darn elegant as well.

There is a flaming one handed sword, but it’s from the Hall of Monuments so you’d have to get some HoM points in GW1 to unlock it.

In any MMO, you should have the habit of completely stripping a character before deletion. Bank what you can that isn’t soulbound, sell the rest or salvage it, put the money in the bank (irrelevant in GW2 thanks to the wallet), and exit wearing underwear and a smile.

For clarity, I mean deleting your -own- characters. You’d better not be hacking someone else’s

Halloween Costuem review

in Blood and Madness

Donari.5237

I don’t mind town clothes that are not for armor use (I do a ton of RP), so long as there are also armor skins. It’s nice to be able to flip outfits at the press of a button and not have to worry one has forgotten to re-equip PvE gear when heading out to fight. Plus it gives more variety.

The Executioners is great because it has good looking boots and gloves and an interesting hood. Combine those with the axe, riding pants, and ornate shirt (on a woman) and you have a striking look. I actually bought a second set of it so that more than one alt can have quick access to the accessories.

The Prince, on the other hand, desperately needs a way to hide those shoulder spikes. Without them it’s flexible to many situations even if it is just one skin from shoulder to toe (it hides the pants and boots you are wearing). With them it’s purely Halloween and frankly, despite others here going on about how perfect it is for a necromancer, neither of my necros would wear big unbalancing spikes like that. The Prince outfit lacks flexibility and I might not have bought it had I known that in advance, other than hating to miss out on any outfit chance. Though I’ll admit the Staff skills are fun.

That scepter issue may be a bug. I have the mad king scepter from last year and I keep it on my thief. It works fine.

Halloween Outfits - Costume Brawl only??

in Blood and Madness

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

They’d be cooler and longer lasting in RP use if you could avoid the massive shoulder spikes on the Prince and the giant skull belt buckle on the Executioner. Heck, if they were top and pants in separate pieces, that would help. Alas, the shirt overwrites any pants you are wearing.

The Executioner boots and gloves are nice wardrobe additions, however, and the Axe and Staff have fun skills and when not in Brawl you can summon a bat (staff) and swap to the axe and summon a skeleton and both will be out at the same time.

The dye fields are pretty well organized to allow a lot of customization of color. Note that the Prince tunic dims and greys out any color added, so no sparkling white. Minor QoL: Why do dye field sizes have no relation to which part of the garment they change? The biggest field on the gloves alters a tiny band around the forearm, leaving a much smaller field to be the main glove color.

Donari.5237

One problem though — the armor is all one piece. You get the outfit, the face paint, and the staff. So you can’t ditch the spiky shoulders and just wear it as a normal tunic.

The Executioner has more pieces but no pants, so you are stuck with the large skull at your navel.

What if you find that you are "that guy"....

Donari.5237

As someone with old eyes and bad reflexes, I can promise you can learn the game well enough to do anything the PvE has to offer. Not being a PvPer I can’t speak to that end of things.

The one thing that saved me, though, was that right after the first Beta Weekend I got a Naga HEX mouse and bound the movement keys to it. That lets me move freely with a few thumb motions. As I am very right handed, that works very well for me; my left hand just has to jab one fingered at ability keys. It took a while to incorporate a keyboard dodge to my mouse movements and I still double tap HEX keys when in a hurry.

Anyway, keep plugging away. The need to constantly move and dodge is the biggest change from other MMOs (and I’ve played WoW, Aion, Rift, AoC, LotRo, along with DaoC, Horizons, and the like). Once I got used to that I actually couldn’t handle WoW mechanics anymore, I kept trying to dodge with my mage … silly me.

If you want some in game coaching I’ll be glad to help (I’m on NA Tarnished Coast). You won’t get razor edge performance advice from me, just some GW2 mechanics for dummies, the sort of thing I wish people had told me at the start. I have a lot of evening RP this week but I am sure I can find time if you need. Ranger and Elementalist will be my weak points, and Engineer won’t be so great either, but I have everything else at 80.

I assume this is a request for general topics, not for points we want to make on said topics, so I’ll keep it short and sweet:

1) RP support – environmental interaction, animations, wardrobe, musical instruments with player pre-made songs and the like.

2) Housing/guild halls – plans, time frame for implementation.

3) QoL upgrades – better sorting in TP (more categories, more filters), UI changes and customization, buying stacks, using stacks, ability to keep interacting with a repair merchant to both repair and sell, etc.

Possible to reuse Gem Armor Skins?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

Yes, the same way you transfer any soulbound skin.

Transmute it onto a low level white item, using a stone if it’s under 80, a crystal if it’s 80.

Put that white item, now sporting the Primeval skin, in your bank.

Log in on the other character, take it from the bank. Voila.

If you want the skin on higher stats, again transmute with the new character, stone or crystal depending on level of destination item.

Edit: Note that you will no longer have the original stat item on your current character, as transmuting destroys it.

What happened to Kessex Hills?

in Living World

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

If I recall correctly, this used to be a small seaside town or village that nearly always had an event where Krait would attack and take villagers as prisoners. Did they finally wipe them out once and for all?

Is that Auld Red Wharf or Triskell Quay? The latter is the one that had the events – Auld Red Wharf has been destroyed since release.

Yup, I goofed. Really shows my Tyrian geography skills are lackluster. The original picture I posted was Auld Red Wharf. This is Triskell Quay, still standing….well, at least the buildings…

And you can still do the renown heart.

However, one thing I noticed this evening…there’s another renown heart at the south end of Viathan, where you assist the quaggan village there by killing krait, freeing captives and so on.

It’s…very difficult to complete since the barrier appeared. Most of the krait are beyond it. I won’t say it’s impossible because guildies called me away to help in the Mad King’s realm before I could experiment too much. But I wonder if this was an intended consequence?

I actually just cheesed it via buying a silver worth of crab meat off the TP. Well, two silver, I accidentally double-clicked the Buy order button. The quaggan took all 100 meats from me so I dunno how many would have done it. So for people who just want map completion, it’s trivial to do the heart. For those that want the adventure of it, hmm … maybe the krait over in the ruined village would count?

Something’s happening in Kessex. The krait have a force wall up in the middle of Viathan Lake. Priory experts are scratching their heads and have called in Lady Kasmeer to help figure out how to dispel the illusion that is hiding whatever is going on in the water. You can talk to the scholars at the camp on the nw shore (up on the hill) to learn more.

Is it Mad King related? Or a buildup to another round of LS? Who knows? But it is something more than just chasing candy corn monsters in a maze.

Colors in chat

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

Anything to help differentiate chatters would be good. However, since every user has their own preferences on colors — be it due to colorblindness, aesthetics, or connotations specific colors have for them — I would suggest that the typer not be the one to choose the color others see, but each individual set the color they prefer for each chat channel.

That would mean assigning a channel to each guild rank, which might be complex to program.

But at the very least … time for me to pull out my old whipping horse … please let us assign colors to already existing channels. Or else do a poll on what color people would prefer for emote text and use the most popular. That dull grey is nearly invisible!!!! Yes I am overusing exclamation points, because omg guys. Translucent beads are an interesting idea, though in Sylvari they might be dewdrops instead? I’ve always liked random scatters of crystal woven into hair, though, so if something like that could be added to a style I bet it would be attractive. Perhaps they could be glow spots in the style. I still want a froth of flowers incorporated into a hairdo, however! Or ivy. Omg please ivy.

As to the faces, I agree that some are somewhat offputting to me. They look almost pustulent. But the main issue I have is with the most human looking faces. They don’t look plantlike to me, they look like flesh, perhaps due to having no surface texture. Right now I’m leveling a warrior just because I felt like making a male sylvari for once, and I’m very happy with his wooden face. The only problem I have with it is that in character creation it has a somewhat sly smile effect, in keeping with my feeling that his personality is a bit cool and calculating, but in game it’s become a constant goofy grin. (Which I want on my human conman thief, not on my sylvari, oh well). Anyway, more faces that look like plants just happened to grow into face shapes are what I’m rooting for.

Here is the wood-face:

Trick or Treat doors, WTH?

in Blood and Madness

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

The doors seem a bit harder to figure out this year than last year. A hint for the Enter issue: Set your aoe loot key to something other than F. Tap that to loot after any fight you ever have. It will grab loot you didn’t even know was there, and will not proc any action with doors, npcs, rezzing, etc. I have mine on J.

Also take a quick moment to check that it doesn’t say “Enter” on your popup, because hitting F if it does is — as you noted — a one way trip to the Labyrinth and you don’t return to where you were, you get to LA instead. If you weren’t done in your zone, that’s annoying and costs WP money. Poor design but at least with some caution on the player’s part, along with never hitting F near a door unless you see “trick or treat” as the option, the surprise portal can be avoided

Agreed. Even if you have to chop the name off at the same amount of characters as in “another character” that would be enough to tell us who owns what.

As a corollary, it would be awesome if one could see in a tooltip on a dye which of one’s characters already know it. Again, given how long some names are, just giving the start of the name would be enough (though with enough alts, the tooltip box might get a little tall).

Anyway, most every patch comes out some time between 1 pm eastern and 5 pm eastern. Sometimes they announce a delay, sometimes you just have to keep trying. They’ve never not delivered it at all, though. So it’ll come.
