new building skill and player owned houses

Duke Nukem.6783

One of the problems with houses in MMOs is what to do with abandoned houses.
ie a player builds a house , and then leaves the game.
What happens to the house?
Houses generally take up space in the game world , so abandoned houses need some mechanism to remove them, otherwise the game slowly fills up with abandoned houses after a while.
One method would be some kind of house tax, whereby in order to keep your house after building it , you had to pay an ongoing fee, but most players dont like this concept.

Or a living story could destroy part of our home instance and allow us to rebuild it.

exactly, it just goes in the home instance, but im sure they wont change the actual story to accomodate it, not that they need to it could “just happen”

excessive use of chat? or excessive filter?

Duke Nukem.6783

I’d replace the excessive chat filter with a different system.

I can’t remember which MMO. It might even have been this one… But I remember one where if enough people blocked your chat, you got zone muted for a while.

Now mix this with a system where the default method of blocking someone’s chat only lasts 1 hour. A permanent block would require clicking some ‘are you sure’ box, but the one hour one could be done with as simple as a right click on some lone of chat.
- And then add to this that, if you chat block someone, you end up leaving the party they are in.

Then you can just tweak up or down how many people it takes to get muted in a zone, and for how long that muting lasts.

honestly this (or anything said here really) would be a perfect fix, its so simple yet it has such a big impact on the way we play, anet should really hurry up and do something

The idea here is to flip the system.

Presently the excessive chat filter is passive – it just happens.
My idea would make it active – it only happens if enough other people on the zone with you find you that bad…

And the switch to temp-blocking is so that people aren’t afraid to use this for worrying that they’ll block somebody forever who was just ‘having a bad day’ that one day. Or because sometimes you just want to quite down the chatter from that one group while you focus on something and listen to the rest of the map – but don’t want it permanent.

we need a more active skill like this to break away from those standing still skills, even if you dont wana use it it will stimulate the economy so YOU can make more m oney off of us!

When I create a party and make requirements for it, it is my right to moderate my own party. Those people who joined me agreed to be my guests.

You are mistaken. You have no such right.

Anet owns the game and they do not grant you that right. In fact they have specifically chosen to deny the existence of that supposed right.

Where do people agree to be your guests? Is there a form they sign?

your wrong he does have that right, it is an intrinsic agreement of entering the party, its very simple to understand that you are entering someone Else’s party, dont over analyze it

Short of simply removing the ability to kick people all together, there isn’t really an abuse-free method available.

removing the ability to kick would allow plenty of opportunities to be a jerk without risk. I wouldn’t call that abuse-free.

the instance owner has every right to be a “jerk” its the instance they started, you are free to leave, every mmo with parties has worked that way and its always fine, nobody complains, i dont remember asking for a democratic party system, i dont remember reading it on the back of the gw2 box and saying “boy iv always wanted that in my mmo” i dont, i dont trust the common rabble and my suspicions have been confirmed time and time again

Sorry but it’s a big nope from me.

1. Guild halls is coming. Pretty much very similar but.. Useful, better?
2. What a massive waste of gold it would be unless you have absolutely nothing else in the game to buy.
3. I feel it would split the community up and we’d see less people running around in the open world (pve, pvp, wvw).
4. What if you had no friends to share this.. Gold sink with? ‘Who needs friends’ is another thing entirely but still.. Ehhh.
5. Is there any beneficial long term bonuses to splurging everything just to make an instance look prettier?

There’s other reasons but these are the main ones.

The only minutely positive things that I can think of from this is:

1. Gives role players another place to go.
2. Private instanced events with friends (coughguildhallscough)

I don’t intend to be negative in any way but that’s all I could think of.

1 well some non guild oriented people might prefer their own place to customize but i could see many of these things being a part of the guild hall

2 and trust me even if you dont wana put your money into building this stuff plenty of us will….i mean everything u buy in this game is just for looks anyways so its no more wasteful than those 30 different axe skins u own and never use, bsids you make money if i spend 300g on a fancy chair, how? because it removes gold from the economy combating inflation, making your gold worth more!

3. so we should never ever ever make any new content then? cuz its gana split up the community no matter what it is, i dont care if i see people running around or not unless i need them.

4. no friends is ur problem not the communities =p maybe a friendless person can make some by having a really cool house to show off (it works in real life!)

5. i think i named alot of ways that ur house could have helpful assets for you to profit from, personal gardens, an advanced crafting station for gear beyond level 500, a portal in ur personal library to a new pve farming area with new exclusive rewards ect ect

Well, as i said on page 2 (in above link), which is over 9 months ago, i seriously doubt Anet will focus on housing.

Ever since then… Swtor has released their housing system and expanded on it greatly. WS has their own form, WoW has Garrisons, and Tera released Guild Housing.

Anet would’ve said something about it for HoT, so i wouldn’t hold my breath.

yea i looked at it but i think they will still want ideas when the time comes….u cant just add gliders and new weapons forever!

excessive use of chat? or excessive filter?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Duke Nukem.6783

Duke Nukem.6783

at one time or another we all came into contact with the “your message has been suppressed due to excessive messaging” line, it ends alot of good conversatons in map chat early and i think it has had a bigger impact on this game than many of us have bothered to consider. most map chats are dead, the maps are full, but chat is quiet and i think thats a real missed opportunity. so i think we should do away with this map chat suppression anti spam thing and just let individual people handle their own chat

reasons why map chat suppression is bad
1. it fosters a culture of silence and less interesting gameplay
gw2 is much MUCH quieter than other mmo, you might think thats a good thing but i say that everything, the public banter, the outspoken confused noobs, and yes even the map chat arguments all add a spice and variety to my play time that helps me get lost in what im doing and make it feel less grindy, u all wonder why gw2 feels so grindy? what are you guys not doing in this mmo that you are usually doing in others? TALKING. it also encourages you to be quieter even when your not in map chat, party chat in this game is quieter than usual because gw2 has a culture of silence and we are all used to it.
2. it damages our ability to coordinate
sure you can say use vent or tell every1 to use /say chat but sometimes when your the only commander in wvw and its tournament season….u gata spam that chat, u gata spam it good, and the players WANT you to spam it, thats the sad thing nobody asked for this suppression, it hurts the listener and the talker
3. it encourages less patience and more kicking even when out of map chat
remember that culture of silence thing? well it carries over to party chat, so when your dungeoning and the group is used to not being free to banter as much as they want in map chat, that is a habit that carries over to party chat and they will choose actions over words because of that, our community is worse off for the suppression of a way to communicate.
BUT WAIT…..THE SPAM SUPPRESSION PROTECTS US FROM…..
1"but i dont want to hear trolls"
there shall always be trolls, and thats ok cuz u shall always have a block button, lets be honest most of you dont wait for spam filter to catch trolls anyways u block them first….so this is not a valid complaint since it wundt affect you anyways
2"have u heard of spamadan the jewel of istan? i dont want another one of those"
spamadan was full of chat for TRADING, we have a trading post that fixes this problem so that will never happen in gw2
3"what about bots? i dont want bots to fill up the game without the chat filter"
this in no way shape or form will incentivize bots, most bots spam your wisper chat anyways, even if they do it in map chat they will get reported by even more people and banned even faster…..again u still have a block button
4"what if alot of people are flaming at once and i cant block them all"
if your block list is full i think that speaks more to your failures as a person than whats wrong with everyone else…..i guess u can always turn off map chat for a little while?
SOLUTIONS
1. just remove spam filter for everyone, quick easy and with only positive results…for most
2. add a spam filter option so we can turn it on and off ourselves, this puts the chat burden on the individual to choose rather than the server as a whole, that way i can talk to everyone and everyone can see me talk but for people who want to turn their spam filters up to maximum my chat will stop showing up after a while and they just wont see it, but everyone else still will.

Am I the only one that kinda lol’d at the “mystic cave shadow dragon was unkillable in solo” part?

Pretty much the entire rant has boiled down to “I want easy, or perhaps even easier, mode fights with minimal to no story and avalanches of loot at the beginning, middle and end of each part”.

I could probably recommend a few games along that line.

There’s always been a thread or two that have popped up every time an episode had a boss fight that requires more than face tanking it and spamming auto attack. I remember the thread(s) about the statue boss being impossible to solo with _ class.

difficult is not the same thing as “long” but as for the shadow dragon fight it seemed to me like the only way to solo that was to wait till the stabilty buff FINALLY landed on the spot i was going to go, it was random, not skill based at all

I’m not referring to the ones about unskippable cutscenes. I would have linked the threads but the archive is now hidden.

yes the motes are exactly what im talking about here, imagine having to do the ENTIRE glint lair mission over for failing an acheivment? i wold riot, but no, you are incorrect to say that being able to IMMEDIATELY start start a fight over ruins the difficulty, it has no bearing on the actual fight at all, if it feels easier its because you are better able to take advantage of the knowledge you acquired last fight, because the quicker we rehears our knowledge the quicker it becomes concrete to us. infact i would wager this kind of thing makes the game MORE challenging because less players will feel the need to consult a guide the first time through because they feel they arnt being punished as much, its more immersive and people wont want to stop.

You don’t understand what I was arguing which is probably why you’re still saying it doesn’t ruin the difficulty.

Imagine that you’re playing a game that let’s you save at anytime you wish. You then encounter a very difficult boss with mechanics that must be learned to beat it. Rather than learn the mechanics, you play it and make constant saves each time the fight is going desirable. When it doesn’t go desirable, you just re-load to the previous save. You continue to do this until you’ve beaten the boss. At no point during the 100’s of attempts did you learn the mechanics as you relied on luck and brute-forcing your way through the boss encounter by abusing the save feature. There was no sense of failure.

The same would occur in this game if players had the option to immediately restart the fight if they messed up. They could keep restarting the fight and attempting until they eventually got lucky. All of these fights are very simple so it would only be a matter of time before they succeeded. Like in the previous example, the sense of failure was removed.

in my opinion video games were much harder and better made back in a time when developers actually had to plan around the “save anywhere” feature its something we really need to get back to so that we can once again properly separate difficult from tedious

i think this would be AWSOME as an addition to WVW or a factions system in the distanct future of gw2.

for example maybe eternal battlegrounds gets a dungeon on it and you can only enter it if your party controls stonemist castle, or the dungeon is always open but each world has its own separate entrance and if one finishes the dungeon all the others die, and you can find them and kill them in the middle of the dungeon to prevent them from finishing!

OR a new map where you can only enter it from the side your faction is on (maybe 2 outposts one for each side) and you dont capture any points but the world bosses and events could be done at the constant risk of getting mobbed by the other side….of course this would require unique rewards and incentives to go on the map at all

I think the idea is to add immersion and lore friendliness with the toggle helmet, shoulders, and gauntlets features. The idea being that you’d toggle them off while in town or not in combat.

They’ve obviously failed at this. A better option would’ve been to auto toggle whatever you have selected when you draw or sheath your weapon.

As to your point, I agree…they should just make everything toggle able. We’d have a lot more options with outfits and so forth. Unfortunately we will not these QoL(quality of life) changes at all……………….maybe in GW3.

i dont want those changes at all i think its silly even to not see helmets and shoulders, how will i know when someone’s armor is broken? and wudnt it be more immersion breaking if random pieces of gear flashed on and off when u unsheathed ur weapon?
