I’m worried the new 200 gold cost for arenas is too high. At least at last check the conversion for the old 1600 gem cost won’t even let you buy one.
People were using them to gain PvP stature but not playing in REAL PvP – they were just grinding capping with friends. This will make it a little harder to do that.
We don’t need anything new till Anet fixes the crap they already broke. (which is alot already). Adding more races, ugly armor, clipping issues (charr you know what i mean)!
Although i favor new stuff and all the game won’t get better adding more problems to the mix…
They never fixed armor clipping in GW1, do you expect them to do it here? Just asking..
Leveling – that is finding sources to gain XP – is extremely easy
The problem is with the trait system, characters are ‘weaker’ than before because they don’t have traits to compliment their builds
No – then you can unlock by concentrating on traits one needs for a build. It is not hard.
(edited by Dusty Moon.4382)
…and new players will take more time to learn the game…
How is this bad? Levelling is so fast in this game that you can easily get to 80 and not have a clue.
The problem is that, with this trait system.. you’re going to get to lv80 and know even less about your class!
No – the problem was – before you could level your character to 80 and not understand how the trait system works. It was a crap shoot and people got stuck with using builds off of the interweb without understanding the synergies between traits. Now you can initially pick and choose what you want to use and unlock the rest at your leisure.
I’m not quite following the cpu bound and not gpu. That being said an integrated graphics should be able to run everything maxed if its on an i5 or i7. Right?
No. The problem is the Intel integrated graphics really stinks. You really need a separate GPU if you are using Intel Integrated graphics. The AMD APU’s are more complex and generally are designed better.
No – there is a reason that is done.
First and foremost, GW2’s graphics were done in DX9 because of Windows XP users. More specifically, 32-bit Windows XP.
Now that Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft, A-Net “could” overhaul the whole game and bring it inline with Windows 7 and 8.
Will they? I have no idea.
They designed this game is to be played on as many PCs as possible. Just because Win XP is no longer supported, does not mean people will get rid of it. The people who use it won’t change and will continue on with XP – that is a red herring argument.
Condition duration food is the culprit. 40% duration is insane. That’s analogous to +40% dmg for a power build.
There is also -40% condi dmg food also. Please get a grip.
They are having one again – jeez – read developers blogs….
The Game engine, which is modified is from GW1 and GW1 used 9.0C. It is not a trivial bit of coding to move up to DX 11, although I wish they would.
Also, DX is not what causes the the game to be single-threaded, the programmers did that in the game engine.

You can sell them to a merchant.
You also need to read the mail in game you received. It will tell you to talk to the Historian again. You will get your chest again with new tickets.
Your reaction is an OVER REACTION.
I don’t think people understand that it isn’t that easy to just “resest” a personal story. It’s not just personal story it’s everything in the game linked towards your race. How other NPC’s interact with you, cultural armor, etc. And as Jokke said they won’t do race changes , sorry.
So true – also character slots are not that expensive. You can just roll a new character. IF we were limited in the number of character slots, I could see this. As it is now – no way as you have an option that is cheaper and easier for the programmers/developers to deal with, a new slot.
Getting full inventory slots on a new character will make it a lot more expensive.
And I want it to be same proffession. Doesn’t make much sense to me to have 2 of the same proffessions when the change is just appearence, story and a few race skills. That most people already done on another character anyway.
Not as simple as it sounds. if you had racial armor – they would have to remove it, etc.
people would complain. Not worth it.
Who cares what it breaks as long as the person who plays it feels good about his own character? U think ppl will actually spam-change races if it cost 1600 gems/change?
U said it yourself. There is already a way to make another race……by deleting…remaking..releveling…loosing bag slots and so on…so why not make it easier for a price?
It’s like going into a huge path link on your computer to get to an .exe instead of just using a shortcut.
People are already complaining that there are things that need to be fixed/modified in game. You want A.net to spend their time because you don’t like the race of a character? Make a new character and move on. I think what it is has to do with a convenience factor and then we will have these players switching – too lazy to make a new character.
If A.Net does this, I think it should be the most expensive item in game – 100K gems.
I recently deleted a lvl 80 character that I could no longer play (I finished the PS with it and everything). The name and the Race were connected, so even if I had a race changer, I wouldn’t have done it.
I don’t think people understand that it isn’t that easy to just “resest” a personal story. It’s not just personal story it’s everything in the game linked towards your race. How other NPC’s interact with you, cultural armor, etc. And as Jokke said they won’t do race changes , sorry.

The Guilds fought for the 6 Gods. Now that they have left and the Dragons have re-emerged, it is a battle against them.
Please ACTUALLY do some lore research before asking a ridiculous question like this.
I have done it here, in this game – Radeon 7950 in my PC with most up to date WHQL drivers and a i5 2500K running at 4.6 GHz. In mob with FSAA on, 10 FPS, with it off 35 fps. That has been done again and again. It has been noted, on many PC forums, that FSAA is a hog and should be used judiciously.
You are assuming that all this processing occurs using the GPU, and it does not. The modified engine this game uses was written in 2006. You can assume that is what this game is written for, GPUs from that era.
I see where this misunderstanding is coming from. You’re talking about FSAA which is an AMD exclusive antialiasing method forced in the driver control panel which is similar to MSAA and are known performance hogs.
I’m talking about F[X]AA the antialiasing that’s built into the game in the options menu and has next to no performance hit, similar to the SMAA method I want introduced to the game. Because SMAA is a much better post processing antialiasing solution when compared to FXAA.
That is still (unfortunately) NOT GPU driven – it is CPU driven. (Even though it is in the graphics options). ZFXAA DOES affect the FPS in this game as do many of the other graphics options. This is why the most recent NVidia WHQL drivers had specific optimizations to remove some of the calculations from the CPU. This game is also a single-threaded app, also.
You cannot compare Max Payne to this game – 2 different engines. A.Net built and designed their own game engine.
(edited by Dusty Moon.4382)
WRONG – FXAA has a HUGE performance hit on this game. Since the majority of the game is actually done using the CPU, not the GPU, any extraneous functions do have affects on the FPS of the game. Example, in WvW, when two huge groups are fighting, the FPS goes down to nothing with FXAA on, turn it off and you can recover some of the FPS lost.
Just tested this in a big world event with players all over the show at the karka queen, it made no discernable difference whatsoever on or off. FXAA is not a performance hog whatsoever, it is a simple post process effect overlayed on top of the game to approximate as a cheaper antialiasing tool.
You can google FXAA performance charts and almost all of them will paint the same picture, for instance in this review for MP3 http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/06/12/max_payne_3_performance_iq_review/4#.U58asMdfCSE
The reviewer noted thusly:
With No AA the HD 7970 is averaging 63.8 FPS. When we turn on very high FXAA the average framerate drops to only 62.3 FPS. This is only a tiny performance drop.

When they add DX 11 support in this game, then much will be dumped onto the GPU. Currently is it not.
this suggestion is hardly any sweat off a dev team’s back as it’s a very simple feature to implement.
Says who?
The framework is already in place in the form of having FXAA, GW2 uses a deferred lighting system so your typical antialiasing like MSAA cannot be forced without some serious driver/profile fiddling, however post processing antialiasing effects such as FXAA and SMAA do not have such a limitation due to it being applied after the game is rendered (which is also why FXAA/SMAA does not show up in screenshots, as screenshots are taken from the game render before the effects are applied)
GW2 engine is only DX9.0C implemented. You did know that, didn’t you? It may bot be implemented in their engine and would have to be.
Also this game is CPU bound, not video card bound.
SMAA is able to be implemented the same way FXAA was into GW2’s engine, SMAA is not purely limited to dx10/11. It is simply a more efficient and better looking post processing effect. Both of these effects hardly have any bearing on a game’s performance at all due to their nature, especially when you compare them to the industry standard MSAA, which cannot apply here due to GW2 using a deferred lighting engine.
Hey all, used the search function and found nothing, and with the suggestion section dead and no section dedicated to technical suggestions, I guess I’ll drop this here.
Arenanet, can we please, as well as your current FXAA implementation, add SMAA to the antialiasing list? Found here: http://www.iryoku.com/smaa/ SMAA has a similar performance hit as FXAA but is far more accurate and less looking like blurred edges as well as the flickering staircase effect that happens with FXAA.
It would take almost no effort to implement as it is a simple post process effect exactly as FXAA is, but it would benefit the game’s visuals tremendously at almost no performance hit at all, much like FXAA.
There is a tool to “inject” SMAA into the game, but as it’s a third party tool rather than built into the game itself so it can cause overlays such as steam, fraps, dxtory, overwolf etc to not work due to how it intercept’s directX calls. So a proper in-game option would be much appreciated and this suggestion is hardly any sweat off a dev team’s back as it’s a very simple feature to implement.
Thanks for reading this short but much needed suggestion to the game. I would much rather use SMAA over FXAA due to it’s similar performance hit, if you can say it has a performance hit, but it has greatly increased visuals over FXAA.
GW2 engine is only DX9.0C implemented. You did know that, didn’t you? It may bot be implemented in their engine and would have to be.
Also this game is CPU bound, not video card bound.
I have seen phishing reset emails also. Be careful.

account with google authenticator can make it more secure, that 30 seconds you will provide high security with changing passwords friend
The authenticator is only as good as your own personal security.
OP I’m sorry but you have no idea what you’re talking about in regards to DPS. You have clearly not played with good eles, thieves, or mesmers; they can out DPS Guards and Warriors in damage and sustain handily.
You only think warrior and guards are the best because those are the easiest classes to get decent DPS with and that’s typically what bandwagon players are playing. There’s little you have to do in order to have decent DPS on those classes (warrior specifically). But for the other classes, if spec’d, geared, and played properly, completely blow them out of the water in terms of DPS.
It is hard to play a Warrior and Guardian well but they are easy to play – button mashing. That is the issue – there are tons of them as well as ele’s and necro’s (again both professions are hard to play well but people do play them, just not well).
Anet is doing a great job but:
1. Warriors and guardians are most OP classes now, they are best in PVE, PVP, WvW and dungeons, other classes fall against them in every aspect, from damage to sustain.Wrong. They can be taken out if you master your mesmer, your thief, your elementalist. It’s not a matter of broken profession, it’s a matter of skills.
The OP isn’t saying that those classes are invincible: he just said that they are overpowered. That probably means that they need a lot less player-skills to achieve what other classes can achieve with more effort. That if you play those classes, you will be consistently doing more damage to mobs, soaking more damage done to you, etc.
And I agree with that, btw.
I will be blunt in my response because I have seen this in many other MMO’s. Players want the developer to nerf a profession because they are ‘assumed’ OP. Most times they are not. Rift had this issue with the Saboteur profession at the beginning and Trion listened to the whiney players and nerfed that profession into oblivion. It was unplayable and it was originally a glass cannon but people wanted a nerf rather than learn how to play against it.
Same thing in this game. You can drop both like a hot potato, but YOU have to know your own profession well. This is something that people are not talking about. You can have an OP profession but if you know how to play against it, you can take it down. Neither are OP but they need to be in melee range for spike damage – CC them and condi them into oblivion.

Back in January, I posted another wish for new race… if we ever go to Cantha, I’d love to see them become playable seeing as they’re humanoid and could make a nice addition if Anet venture a little outside the comfort zone and revive the Wardens (GW1 wiki).
250 years have passed; Shiro is “gone” so maybe they can see past their somewhat limited role as Protectors of the Echovald Forest and are no longer zealous/mad about their intent to take it all out on humans but maybe for a plot in Cantha they can have Echovald as their starting zones and from there move out into the world.
They would look quite unique in character creation and are a humanoid (formerly human) race and maybe prove an interesting alternative to Sylvari as another “forest people” without Anet having to introduce the stereotypical elves/dwarves.
I’ll also add the other thing I wrote back then concerning all those requests for typical elves and dwarves to become part of Tyria;
In my opinion for the GW universe; anyone asking for elves/dwarves; WoW -> that way or LotRo <- that way… embrace the fact that dwarves are extinct and elves are non-existant.
We will not be able to go back to Cantha until ALL the Elder Dragons are gone. The Emperor closed off Cantha to the rest of the world when Orr was resurrected.
The Wardens were evil and as such, we would not be playing them.

Ah victim blaming is fun!… you know, instead of feeling bad for the guy, saying that sucks, next time use mobile authentication (if you have a phone that can do that) and move on. No, we gotta all assume all the bad things he must have done to bring this upon himself!
It is not blaming the victim, it is telling the person what he did wrong. The old saying, ‘Stupid is as stupid does’ is so true.
Another thing can happen – there has been quite a few phishing emails are going around. These emails say; “Your GW2 account is going to be suspended for 72 hours for illegal activity unless you log into – give a spoofed link to A.Net.” Hackers and gold sellers then have your email and password.
They had to have the email and password in order to get in. Then the IP authentication of A.Net kicks in – they can say this IP is OK and then take/sell your ‘friends’ stuff.
‘YOUR FRIEND’ did one of several booboo’s – 1. used the same password more than once (very common). 2. Used a common word. 3. Was phished (as above). 4. Keylogger.
There is one other thing – make sure your friend is using an AV program and that he scans his computer often.
A.Net can put all the security in place they want but that security is only as good as the user. If the user has no security, then there is no security in the game.

Am I in the wrong game?
If you want gear treadmills and constant raids that replace everything before it every few months. Yes, you are indeed. This game does have endgame content but it’s quite a bit different than most other MMOs. PvP and WvW are basically it. If you are a pver exclusively then there is going to be little for you to do endgame wise other than the LS every few weeks, and that takes… a day or so to finish off.
Boy, have you misunderstood this game. It is, in fact, the quintessential gear treadmill and has been since 11/2012. I really don’t understand how anyone can miss this. They even gave you a clue that year by saying that vertical progression would be in the game going forward. It doesn’t get any clearer than that.
Vertical: the power level of the game goes up. Progression: it continually goes up over time. Vertical progression is exactly what defines a gear treadmill.
This game DOES NOT have Vertical progression. You misunderstood. This game has Horizontal progression. The difference between Exotic and Ascended is miniscule and does not deter one from being competitive in WvW and one couldn’t be with vertical progression.
There is no gear treadmill in this game.
Here is a link – Econ 101: Supply and Demand – http://www.env-econ.net/supply_demand.html People need to understand this before they argue about the TP.

Overwolf
./thread
Overwolf unfortunately also has buff/debuff timer which is NOT allowed.
Not meant as trolling, but Largos will never be playable. They’re an elusive race who shie away from too much contact with other people and operate mostly on their own as hunters of some sort of prey. Anet cannot suddenly retcon their whole background and have hundreds of thousands Largos out and about in the open world…
Tengu are the obvious candidate of next playable race. Nowhere found as mobs, we know they have a starter area/hub in Dominion of Winds and it just makes sense.
Interesting note. Tengu don’t even show up as risen. I don’t think they have been corrupted anywhere. The only major race with a major city that hasn’t been corrupted. Largos on the other hand always seem to pop up as risen priestesses of Dwayna. Just thought I’d point that out.
Really makes you wonder….do they cremate their dead?
Remember the Sylvari don’t show up as the Risen either….
Yes but they are arguably also considered “dragon Minions” already. (The signs are heavily pointing in favor of but the evidence is still not concrete imo) Can’t corrupt something already corrupt. They just lack (mostly) the dragon’s influence due to Ventari’s tablet.
They are not Dragon Minion’s – if they were there wouldn’t be 2 Factions – one Dark (Nightmare Court) and one not. Until there is absolute proof of that – I will doubt that.
I think because they have Ventari’s Tablet teaching infused in them, in the Dream, I think this may make them mostly incorruptible.
There is no issue – I get it every day – it is not hard at all. People were complaining it was too easy. Now that is it not, people are complaining.
No – many of the people who have 10K, worked for it also played GW1 and maxed that out. I know people with 14K achievement. Should I be jealous of them? No that is just dumb – they play more is all.
(edited by Dusty Moon.4382)

As the title states I want to know if the use of macros is completely forbidden. I want to record macros to play music with the “toy instruments” that the game offers via gem shop. Thanks in advance.
YES – macros are forbidden. If you want to get a permaban, go right ahead.
Read the FAQ – it states it in no uncertain terms. The rules state one macro key – one key only.
People have to whine. I am finding no problem with my new character I am leveling.* I have unlocked many of the traits just by doing – unless you just want to do it by crafting (boring).*
They are not hard and this is a nonissue really.
You can’t unlock traits by crafting >.>
I know that but you can level by crafting. Also doing a Karma train. I guess the idea is to make sure people explore all that GW2 is. The same was for GW1 – the Elites were all over and some places were a pain to get to.
Ascended Trinkets are better than Ascended armor or weapon – they give you the most boost for the buck, as it were. I think they are fin the way they are.
Sure. If you don’t have all your accessory/jewelry slots already filled with ascended stuff the drops are great. I’m sure plenty of people would love them. But, like I said in my OP, I and many of my WvW-centric friends have all of our jewelry slots full of ascended trinkets. Between drops and previously buying them with laurels. In which case more ascended trinkets are as useful as grey vendor trash is.
If we can’t auction ,give to friends or salvage them (preferably for ascended mats to craft other gear or put on the BLTP) at least I think we should get more than 4s, 95c for them.
Other characters you have? – they don’t drop enough to make a huge difference.

I don’t understand why people keep saying “only if the other classes get it too.” The other classes already have it…
But Elementalist have 4 ATTUNEMENTS (FIRE, EARTH, WATER AND, AIR) to use with one set weapon/set – the others do not. So in essence you have 4 different types of attacks with one weapon/set. Ele’s already have 2 more sets of than the other professions.
^ I was kind of enjoying your post until the last part about GW2 being a WoW clone. I’m not even going to say anything other than: have you actually played WoW before?
the two things that are directly from WoW and are just as horrible:
1.) gear grind, you might not have to do an insane dungeon to hope for a drop but then again, you have a better chance of getting the gear trough a drop then to farm for it like in GW2.
2.) gear centric, one thing GW1 did perfectly right but GW2 did horribly wrong is to make gear the top priority as it is in WoW, it should’ve bin a cosmetic thing and nothing else.Gear is NOT a top priority in GW2, the players are making it a priority (you only need Ascended items if you are doing high lvl fractals). Heck, I even have a character that I WvW with that still has green items equipped. If it were true, that GW2 is equipment-centric, I shouldn’t be as competitive as I am.
People keep mistaking the ‘I want to look unique’ with ‘this gear is needed or I am toast’. There is NO GEAR GRIND in this game – the players are doing that to themselves.
so in short, gear is top priority.
try to get in a group with rare or masterwork gear, good luck with that…..
It is not – if you think it is – well you may be missing players who know how to play their professions rather than just relying on gear. That comes from other games. YOUR LOSS, NOT MINE…
GW1 was the exact same way. People would always say, LFG with max equip. only!! it only made roughly 0.1% from the max to the next level – that is not much.
To Xae Isareth.1364 – The difference between Exotics and Ascended is so miniscule in damage – like max 5% (based on other people’s calculations) and that is not much for the amount of money and time it takes to get them. I will take a person who knows their profession over a person who just ground out the max armor to be “UBER” – they still die the same….
(edited by Dusty Moon.4382)
I understand that – it is a no go unless ALL professions have the same thing.
Sorry no – OP.
“Magister Ogden Stonehealer is the last remaining surface dwarf. Like all who have undergone the Rite of the Great Dwarf, he has been transformed into a creature with a single-minded dedication to the defeat of Primordus and its Elder Dragon kin, but rather than follow his brothers into battle in the Depths of Tyria, Ogden has stayed on the surface to aid the Durmand Priory and act as a compendium of lore on the Elder Dragons. As the last (known) dwarf, he is a constant target of the vengeful dredge.
In his former life, Ogden was a priest of the Great Dwarf, and an expert on the prophecies of the end times of the dwarves. When those prophecies came to pass, in 1078 AE, Ogden helped facilitate the Transformation of the Dwarves and was instrumental in the defeat of the Great Destroyer. Ogden did not initially undergo the Rite, although eventually all dwarves were made to—by force, if necessary.”
The Dredge are hunting the Dwarves into extinction – that is why they have Sonic Weapons, those weapons can break and kill a changed Dwarf.
Please see the technical section – they have suggestion on how to do it. It will be moved there by a mod soon.
This game is CPU bound. Also make sure you have to the most up to date video drivers as they have some optimizations to help with the CPU load.
The Charr lost Ascalon. The Charr took it back in part. Humans ruled all of Tyria. Humans lost power and have been pushed back. The Sylvari didn’t exist. Now they do. The Elder Dragons were asleep. Now they are awake. The Jade Sea was solidified. Now it’s not. LA was part of Kryta. Now it’s an independent state. The dwarfs being turned to stone and then being able to come back to “life” (flesh) is a plot twist and absolutely an acceptable one.
Tyria is full of magic and technology. I’m sure the dwarfs being turned to stone can be overcome as far as lore goes.
1.) The dragons drain the magic from them forcing them back into flesh and blood.
2.) The asura build a device to reverse the effects of the Rite of the Great Dwarf.
3.) The Great Dwarf calls them back to Anvil Rock to be “reformed” into flesh.
4.) The Great Dwarf creates new dwarfs on Anvil Rock.
5.) The Durmand Priory find ancient artifacts that if combined have the ability the change them back.
6.) etc, etc, etc…I’m sure ANet hasa pretty good staff on hand that could figure something even better out. As far a lore goes ANYTHING is possible. It doesn’t “break lore” or go against the universes rules. In Tyria things change all the time. Nothing is forever.
All of the above bolded text had reasons that make sence. The Charr were at war with Ascalon, they won using magics given to them by Abbadon, a human god. The Sylvari were created from the combination of a Centaur exile wanting to end the war with the humans and failed, retreating to a secluded area, and a human who had stumbled across strange seeds. The pale tree was planted on the grave of a human. The Elder Dragons had attempted an Extinction level event and nearly won but were pushed back by the ancient races, now they have returned and seek to try again. The Jade sea was frozen by a backlash of energy released when Shiro Tagachi was slain.
Dwarves were turned to stone in an event similar to the numerous mythological/theological “End Times” events. They essentially went to their final war. If Anet were to just turn around and say “Alright boys we are done here lets head back.” it would break the whole concept behind their sacrifice. If they did it would be a deus ex machina scenario and they would lose a lot of hard built lore. They have also stated dwarves will not be playable because they are way over done. They will most likely stay as a background character for when we go engage Primordus.
Just an FYI – their are rumors that the Jade Sea is desolidifying – We do not know if that is true since Cantha closed itself off from the rest of the world when the Elder Dragons resurfaced.
As far as the Dwarves are concerned – "After the Transformation of the Dwarves, dwarven biology changed significantly. The race became creatures of undying stone, linked together by a kind of collective consciousness that gives them purpose. They are biologically immortal, meaning they do not die of old age, but can still be killed by other means. As creatures of stone they can no longer breed, and so it is no longer possible for any more dwarves to be born. "
AND
“The fight between the dwarves and the Destroyers consumed the dwarven race. Few lived to return to the surface and tell the tale of their victory—and those who did had been irrevocably altered. No longer made of flesh and bone, no blood pumped through their veins. Instead, they found their bodies composed entirely of stone surrounding nothing but cold, hard earth.
No longer interested in maintaining their solidarity as a race, these last dwarves scattered across Tyria, finding battles to fight in the deep caverns or making new homes in far-flung hills, ever-watching the borders where caverns emerge into the surface world. Those few individuals who can rightfully claim to have met a dwarf in their lifetime are rare, and all speak of the strange, driven passion that consumes these few survivors. "
All from GW2WIKI – meaning there are not enough Dwarves to have a Race – they are extinct.
2.) gear centric, one thing GW1 did perfectly right but GW2 did horribly wrong is to make gear the top priority as it is in WoW, it should’ve bin a cosmetic thing and nothing else.
Gear is NOT a top priority in GW2, the players are making it a priority (you only need Ascended items if you are doing high lvl fractals).

Actually – you don’t know what is involved with the character data. When you bought the game, there was an EU version and a US version. In GW1, all your data for your characters was stored locally (on your PC) but that was an Instanced – lobby game not a true MMO. The data is different for a true MMO and GW2 is one. All the other games I have played (Rift, TERA, WoW, ESO, etc.) all have the same problem as GW2 – they have EU and NA server farms. You are assuming a lot that you know nothing about.
You’re right, I don’t know the exact architecture of GW2’s server structure, but what I do know is that you’re patently wrong about the character data for gw1 being stored locally. If that were true, anyone with half a mind to crack the file encryption would be able to edit their characters and add whatever items/skills to their character they wanted and clearly this is not the case.
I am a NA player and played on an EU server for a while because of the guild I was in was mostly EU. It was a lag fest. The reason there are THREE server farms, for this game, is the lag would be horrendous. Again, you assume a lot and no nothing about how the game is structured.
Et tu, Brutus.
You could hack the data in the beginning that is why initially duping was such a big problem with GW1. There were speed hacks and other things that were done in the beginning also – hence why A.Net when hard nose with the rules about cheating, etc. What they went to was to have an exact copy on their server so if anything was wrong with the data for your character it would be changed when you logged in. They also went to encryption on the data. If you played from the beginning of GW1, you would know the story.

It’s because there are two data centers which separately hold the account’s information. One is in Europe and one is in the USA. Because there are two account data holding sites, this means the two types of accounts can’t share the same map.
Thanks, Captain Obvious.
The point is that this division is artificial and ANet should make it go away.
Yeah, there is this thing on the internet called latency that IS effected by actual geographic location (the data path length from your PC to the server). Games that need near-real time data to work smoothly do NOT do well with high latency. The game was designed with 2 (now 3) data centers for a reason.
Players whine about lag and very often the reason is something Anet CANNOT do anything about (sans putting in MORE DATA CENTERS….the exact opposite of the OP request). Ask a player in the Pacific Rim (that has to connect to either NA or EU servers to play at all) and they will tell you about living with near constant skill lag and rubber-banding. (Yes, Anet could add another Data Center, but I’m sure it’s not cost effective to do so).
One BIG data center would make the game horrific for a VERY large portion of the playerbase, so it’s not likely to happen.
Gw1 had multiple data centres and switching between them was as simple as selecting which district you wanted to join. The hop between the EU and NA servers showed your IP jumping from the 206.x range to the 216.x range just as happens in guild wars 2.
There is absolutely NO reason why character data and the server hosting the instance needs to be housed at the same physical location and the gw1 network proves this to be true. I find it quite astounding that so many people in this thread are ignorant of this point.
ANet made a choice to have two difference character data servers, but it does not need to remain this way, and making excuses about potential interruptions in service does not absolve them of the fact that the way things work is because ANet chose it to work this way.
And by extension, myself and anyone who doesn’t like the way things are set up now are quite entitled to tell ANet that we want them to change it. There ought to be a cost-effective way to ensure that people from all over the world can play with people from every other part of the world together while still primarily being based in a region that is close to their geographical location. After the megaserver debacle and the way Anet is generally lumping the playerbase into the same instances and this is the next logical step in that progression.
If you wanted to play with American friends, you should have chosen NA instead of EU. We have several Brits, Middle Eastern, and New Zealanders in our guild who we play with on a regular basis because they chose to play on NA servers.
Also, you can just buy a 2nd account as someone else previously mentioned, and have both an NA account and an EU account.
Since its such a small thing, why don’t you just buy the account for me? Make sure to fill it up with ascended gear too, cuz apparently farming all that stuff is trivial.
I did not choose the region that I was based in lightly and it’s completely ridiculous to expect people to buy 2 copies of a game just to be able to play with people they know.

No – it would make ele’s too OP and they are already OP.
Ele’s already have 4 separate skill trees they can use with one set of weapons and that is = to the other professions having 4 sets of weapons to switch to. Wait – they only have 2, so no – you want ele’s to have 8 and the others still to have 2 – that would be OP, even if it was out of combat.
Every profession has a weakness in their builds, and that is why the game is set up the way it is. Having more than one weapon for an ele to swap to would mean that weakness would be gone. That is not fair and that is not balanced.

No – I think WvW should be in since it is part PvE and part PvP. It is the best of both worlds – I am getting used to playing WvW.
I’m pretty sure the reason it was possible in GW1 is because the game only had 1 data center, possibly only one server. Meaning all maps, and all players and their account information were on the same computer.
This was also why if you were playing anywhere except America lag and associated problems like rubber-banding were very common. But since you could only have a maximum of 24 players on the same map outside of the towns (and that was only in Alliance Battles) and most of the game was instanced it wasn’t as much of a problem.
GW2 has two separate data centers in different physical locations thousands of miles apart. (Texas and Germany if I remember correctly.) Obviously they are linked and it’s possible to send information between them, but players from the two different regions playing together on the same map uses a lot more bandwidth than sending a whisper or even an item.
The increased demand on the servers would lead to far worse lag, not just for the people doing this but for everyone else playing too who would have to wait for the server to be able to process their data.
tl;dr I’m going to trust the professionals who built this game and say it’s not possible because of technical limitations rather than assume they’re lying because random people online want it to happen.
I want a pet unicorn too, but wanting it doesn’t make it possible.
GW1 had 3 data centers – NA, EU, and Asia (Korea).
Since they are using the same data centers now, it happens. If all were merged into the NA data center we would end up having tremendous lag.
