Ft Aspenwood between seasons?

Echoing the sentiment that in no way is FA wanting to drop to silver league and in fact we are trying harder than ever to stay in T2 since the only good thing about WvW is the fights, not the PVD. DB has been leeching rating off of SOR for far too long so currently its an inaccurate picture of the actual ratings imo.

While the ratings may be inaccurate, I doubt FA has enough time to prove it since we are only a couple of weeks away from S2, and the currently projected ratings will shift even more during the week in favor of DB, as their night time presence gains steam whereas FA’s lack of it becomes more apparent.

Why would you ever waste dev time on this?

Such miniscule differences in performance within a game mode that is already the easiest of its kind in any game ever.

You do realise its helpful for wvw players aswell.

Maybe some players. But not enough for it to be a worthwhile development project. Which was my point the entire time.

GW2 isn't about guilds?

Guild Wars refers to an event in Human history in the game. Not guilds.

Worst argument ever. The event known as the Guild Wars happened because Guilds are an integral part of the Guild Wars universe. It’s completely illogical to claim that Guilds shouldn’t be an integral part of your own story within the Guild Wars universe as well.

That the same argument for GW1 there is no Guild war in GW1 because it happen before GW1.

I have to ask why ANet went with Overgrowth? Red already outnumbered both blue and green heavily before the stream started, and joining the already winning team only served to snowball it even further… I was commanding green side, and I never had more than 12-15 people with me.

The only reason we held Thunder Hollow at the end was because I set up defensive siege beforehand, it was the only place we could make a stand. We couldn’t even venture out of our keep much because you guys had roamers every where.

Joining blue or green would have served to have a more even fight, rather than red having 80%+ of the map most of the stream.

I suppose there would have been logistics issues in switching teams, but the point is that Frostreach was quite disappointed and frustrated.

Because when you are not the team currently steamrolling the glaring flaws and shortcomings of WvW are even more obvious.

Step one: Put in a toggle to not see commander tags.

Step two: Implement Ascended Commander Tags. Make people face ascended crafting for them. Remember, the cost for a normal C-Tag is 100g, so use that as the base when deciding how much stuff is needed for the AC-Tag. These tags always remain visible.

Step three: Implement Legendary Commander Tags. Same as the AC-Tags, but up the requirements to legendary level. WvW, PvP, and PvE all required to get them. Dungeons, crafting, map exploration, leading a guild, and even a book report on “The Art of War”. They’ll function the same as the AC-Tag, but you can set the color to any dye unlocked on that character.

Don’t forget having served in Afghanistan or Iraq, if only as a grunt!

Living World vs Lore

in Lore

Posted by: EFWinters.5421

EFWinters.5421

Well, think of it as watching CSI vs Game of Thrones. Like with episodes of CSI, Scarlet is both introduced and ended (presumably) in this “episode” of the living world, and has no connection to the last “episode” (Zhaitan). Contrarily, Game of Thrones is ever expanding on its lore and developing existing characters, allowing the story to proceed without introducing circumstances that may seem weird to the viewer.

Both shows can be fun to watch, but CSI will never feel as fulfilling, entice you to watch the next episode, garner as much interest, or win as many awards as Game of Thrones will.

Serious zerg question for REAL discussion.

in WvW

Posted by: EFWinters.5421

EFWinters.5421

WvW is a PvP mode first and foremost, and yet you don’t go into WvW and join a 70-man zerg to do PvP. You do it so that you will minimize the risk of ever actually having to engage in PvP, while reaping more rewards than anyone else at the same time. In what other PvP setting can you simultaneously minimize risk and maximize reward, by not actually engaging in PvP?

And thus the problem with zerging; it promotes a mindless style of play that is still preferred by most players since it’s by far the most rewarding. In fact, I’d go so far to say that WvW is suffering from many of the problems it does because of how zerging is promoted.

You’re recapping your BL and an enemy zerg twice your size shows up? Don’t even bother, just go karma train another map until they leave.

Your server is struggling in the off hours? Just find an EotM map where you have a large zerg and karma train there instead.

Why bother going out of your way in an effort to learn how to play when you are going to end up being severely less rewarded for it? Zerging is even encouraged by ArenaNet through the AoE cap for example.

And that’s why WvW will never ever be taken seriously, no matter how many leagues or seasons they come up with.

If you are adept at playing X profession you will probably outperform most of the dummies playing whatever profession people consider to be the “best” anyway. As someone else said, every profession is viable everywhere, and running a 5x Warrior group or whatever is considered the “meta” right now is only going to be marginally faster (note: not neccesarily better) than running a random group composition. I also wouldn’t worry about not getting into groups in the first place either, especially on NA servers, and even more so on Tarnished Coast if you choose it. I could mention that I have been playing on both NA and European servers and I can tell you the lag is slightly noticeable, but it definitely won’t matter for PvE.

"Unkillable" Guard - WvW

EFWinters.5421

A few points:

  • Vitality is still pretty bad. Now, if you wanted the major Power from PVT I could have let it slide for 2-3 armor pieces but Clerics is still objectively better.
  • Shelter is better than Sigil although you seem intent on keeping it on your bar for whatever reasons.
  • You are running massive amounts of condi clears but you still pick up Soldier Runes? I would seriously advice against that.
  • I would like to hear your motivation for running Tome when you are so heavily invested into Virtues.

Not the build maker, but here’s my advice.

  • For zerging the vitality is a hair low, but otherwise it should be fine
  • Shelter is infinitely better than SoR. Signet is a PvE heal; I agree with you 100%.
  • Condi meta is only getting stronger over the next few months (ty short-sighted nerf to power builds) so you can never have enough condi cleanse
  • High healing power builds benefit far more from Book than RF, so I understand their logic

That said I hate overly bunker builds because they’re inherently self-limiting. PvE gearing allows for so much diversity with the Guardian class, especially when it comes to balanced builds. I can’t quite understand why people would waste it by running an sPvP-esque bunker.

  • He’s stated he’s going to duo roam. In that environment Vitality is near useless compared to healing power.
  • What you fail to realize though, is that most of the time, conditions are going to be cleansed, not expire. The 25% reduction in Condition Duration is useless everytime he cleanses those conditions. There are much better runesets available when looking at his build.
  • Again, Book might be good in your 15-20man GvG zergs, but for a two man team? 1) It’s going to be completely useless, and 2) He’s gonna eat dirt within a few seconds against anything even mildly coordinated if he brings out that Book. In a duo his partner will rely on him to CC, deal damage, heal and maintain boons. There won’t be another 20 players around him to pick up the slack in the areas he can’t maintain while using Book.

Regarding your last point; Permanent retal uptime, good power which allows for strong autoattacks, lots of both soft and hard CC, massive healing, comparatively high mobility and good might generation for the group are some things which makes Healway coupled with a DPS probably the strongest Guardian build for running a 2-man group.

If you feel that the damage is lackluster you are most likely

1) Not good enough at Retal management yet.
2) Underestimating the power of your autoattacks.
3) Getting kited too much.

Healway is a great build but it does have it’s weaknesses. Realistically you are never going to win against for example P/D thieves and PU condi mesmers, whereas you should have a much better chance against for example power based Thieves and shatter Mesmers. Honestly for solo roaming I would swap to my Mesmer or Necro because yes, you could win a 1v3 with a healway Guardian too, but you are going to spend half an hour doing it.

My best advice, if you wanna roam with healway, is to find a friend who can roam with you. A healway Guardian coupled with a condi Engineer, shatter Mesmer or D/D Elementalist are all top of the line compositions for roaming duos.

Or launch a new WvW Season with a title track and a promise of better rewards and gain the same effect.

The latter doesn’t consider the long term health of the game. It’s very short sighted.

That’s why we have LS story though, so you are left behind if you quit the game for one or two months. Since Season 1 they have been introducing more and more of this stuff into WvW so they can keep the WvW playerbase spinning in the eternal hamster-wheel-of-no-actual-progress too. Way better than long-term implementations that people enjoy to play.

Solving mobility for WvW roaming?

in Guardian

Posted by: EFWinters.5421

EFWinters.5421

ahem
Just your personal views up there.
For me, if i’m in combat, i’m mobile enough with meditations/leap/teleports to not let my target get away.
So I would more than gladly sacrifice some O-O-C mobility for actual strength in a fight. Then again, if you run with a WvW zerg(or simply run Retreat!), the problem solves itself.
As for that, I don’t like runes of traveler. They make swiftness look near useless, meanwhile giving boon duration so it lasts… for longer… you get my point, right?
I’d rather get something that rocks the actual combat, and such would be Lyssa, Soldier’s, and some other honorable mentions(+45% boon duration from runes maybe?)
And I feel like a boss10 feet tall norn when it comes to fighting other players. So egocentric, that being
1 versus 2 doesn’t even sound unfair.

Staying mobile in combat is the #1 way of increasing your sustainability as a guardian.

Slapping some Soldier runes on your armor pales in comparison.

if there was no downstate; a hypothetical

in WvW

Posted by: EFWinters.5421

EFWinters.5421

1. 1 Rally per Kill does not help the zerg, it helps the roamers. If your 5 man group runs into a 20 man zerg and downs a few people, currently all they need to do is instant gib one of your fellows (which isn’t that hard with 20 ppl) and they’re all back up.

My point is that if your 5-man fails to secure a stomp before the enemy even though you downed people before the enemy did, you are in over your head and deserve to lose.

2. Reduced revive speed is in the favor of roamers too since a zerg has far more people available for reviving. Currently it’s near impossible to finish someone with a standard 3 second channel if he has 2-3 friends about. This change would help mitigate that.

No, if your enemy is coordinated enough to have 2-3 people instantly start reviving when someone goes down, they are coordinated enough to be awarded that revive. If your team fails to interrupt them reviving, doubly so.

In fact your entire logic seems to assume that somehow the roamers are worse, that they’d be the first to die instead of the first to score kills. I’m surprised how you can reach the exact opposite conclusion to what common sense and experience dictates.

I’d love to know your “experience” of small man roaming. You are saying you always have trouble securing stomps and revives, while I am claiming the opposite. Clearly it seems I am more experienced in the matter.

EFWinters.5421

How would 1,2,3 benefit zergs more?

Currently, the more people you have, the more people that can rally off of one person.

Focused damage is key to roaming. (And read the next section)

The more people you have, the faster they can res up downed without any DR on the number of ressers.

The faster the finisher the less time you’re taking damage/cc from more people.

Your arguments are based around a world where roamers are on an equal skill level to zerglings. In reality though, good roamers will have a lot more knowledge on how to secure stomps as well as preventing them, and a lot higher coordination to make it happen. As I have stated in earlier posts the downed state is just another layer of the game where skilled people can outplay unskilled people.

How does ele downed state seperate you from your allies O.o? You would have to move yourself in the wrong direction for that to happen.

You are most likely moving away from the people currently trying to revive you as they would be on the same spot as the people trying to stomp you. It would be naive to believe that a group of random zerglings would be coordinated enough to gather up at some spot to where the elementalist can Mist Form to. In the case of Mist Forming to someone on the edge of battle, I get the stomp in most cases anyway because I am more on top of the situtation than some far away guy who most likely don’t even notice the elementalist coming.

Contrarily, I can immediately leap + blink away to a remote location and have my elementalist duo partner Mist Form to me, letting me get the revive in almost all cases.

Reward wins, not just activity

in WvW

Posted by: EFWinters.5421

EFWinters.5421

the problem with that is that regardless of how motivated someone is, the vast majority of players have no impact on whether their server wins or not.

And yet high population in WvW has a significant effect on the outcome (a point you make yourself).

The situation is not helped by encouraging people to take actions that have little effect on winning, and not offering much motivation to try.

otherwise, player A could spend an hour following a zerg from keep to keep and get end of week rewards because their server won, but player B who spent 20 hours defending towers, running supplies, etc.. they get nothing because their server just doesn’t have the coverage. neither of those situations would encourage a player to try harder for a win.

I’m sorry that I have not explained myself clearly enough.

Player B gets exactly what they get today, not “nothing”.

Player A gets what they get today plus bonus if their server wins.

The bonus will encourage both players to take actions that will increase the chances of their server winning.

Note that I believe this change should be made together with my other suggestion, that “flip” event rewards are only given out if the node is held at the tick. In order to get anything from WvW, people would have to contribute to their world’s score. This will discourage the mindless “follow the zerg” because it will be considerably less effective.

I agree that coverage is a serious (other) problem.

I’m always rather disappointed by the attitude that people should get prizes for losing. It’s a game. You have to be able to win or lose it. Otherwise it’s as much a game a knitting.

Then how is your system better than the one currently in place? Right now people are rewarded for what they actually contribute to. Killing players, taking supply camps, guarding keeps etc. Why would you give another reward based on factors which individual players have little to no effect on?

as for rewards being conditional on the server winning: this basically locks out 2/3 of the player base, most of which have zero power to affect the outcome. It would lead to big drops in activity once the match is decided

Not the entire reward. I’m saying there should be a significant end-of-week bonus for the winning server.

Why?
