Eyes Are Different

The eyes got changed and it completely ruined my look with the trickster mask.

1st is how she looked from the very beginning:

and 2nd is how she looks now:

I think it got changed around Nov 19th. I’m pretty sad about it.

While I don’t like my own changes, that is.. significantly worse than what I’m dealing with. Yikes, I’m sorry.

Eyes Are Different

in Asura

Egon Vidar.9125

I’m not sure when this change took place as I haven’t logged into my ranger in some time, but suffice to say, his eyes are different from the way they looked when I created him to (very deliberately) look a specific way. While the eyelash problem is fixed, the light refraction bug is not (one eye lighter than the other), and he now appears to have a weird sultry guyliner look.

Which isn’t what I intended when I made his eyes huge and wide-open in the first place. I see nothing in the patch notes, but they have very obviously been changed, at least on this face.

First picture is how he looked on creation, second is how he looks today. I promise it’s not something so simple as him changing facial expressions during his idle animation cycle. Anyone else notice this with this face, or any other faces?

Not asking for confirmation as I definitely know it’s changed, but I am curious if it is this extremely obvious to anyone else. And nothing in the patch notes that I see, to boot.

No backpack?

Egon Vidar.9125

Aww, I was hoping for a new Halloween backpack. Among many other spooky items.

However, I’m also fed up with backpacks in the LS.. mainly that they’re just a one time thing so you have to cram all of them in your bank and you only get them for one character. But I would have been elated with one for Halloween. I wore my Mad Memoires for months.

Besides, the only real option for my necro is the tentacle backpiece, and I’d like to have more “dark” options..

gargoyle ranger pet

Extinct is gone. No more. Zilch. Endangered is “extremely rare.” They’re honestly closer to the definition of cryptids (they just happen to be real in-game) than anything resembling “extinct,” but even “endangered” is closer but not entirely accurate.

While Zhaitan’s undead status is debatable (I seem to recall Konig believes he isn’t, I’m more inclined to think he might be but could go either way, hoping for evidence in either direction) I definitely wouldn’t call him a Risen. It’d be like calling Jormag an Icebrood. Risen very strongly implies being an extention of or creation of Zhaitan himself.

Anyway, what I want is raptor ranger pets, and so does my wife. I’ve wanted them since GW1..

Children and Corruption

in Lore

Posted by: Egon Vidar.9125

Egon Vidar.9125

Like Konig said, it’d screw up the rating. The original Silent Hill had to cut out some of their monster children models for that specific reason.

Partially because the monstrousness of the children themselves, and because you would have to kill them. It would have pushed an already high rating much further than they wanted, and it most certainly would have done the same for GW2. I’d love to see it because this game can really use some more mature themes, but it just won’t happen.

I’ll be like the guy above and pretend that corrupted children on their own are so weak and useless that they basically get cannibalized to make more powerful monsters.

Anyone Else Feels Tired Of Living Story?

in Living World

Egon Vidar.9125

I played GW1 for eight years, and GW2 since launch. I had hope for the Living Story at first and bits of it I have honestly enjoyed, like the Bazaar (I miss that area terribly), SAB with my friends, and the improved Tequatl fight. Some of the mini games have been great, too, like Sanctum Sprint and especially Aspect Arena.

But at this point, it just feels like work. I could ignore it, I suppose, but guildies (who are close friends) want to do it as well, and I’d rather not miss out on one-time-only items and skins, or any important lore that might crop up.

Which might be one of the worst parts. GW1 didn’t have writing that anyone could really call groundbreaking or anything like that, but its lore was unique, rich, and interesting. The LS.. yikes. I almost feel resentful of it at this point, that it’s taking so much attention away from things that really need to be expanded on. I wouldn’t care if it was at least done well and brought something interesting to the table. As it is, when I learned I’d get to deal with Scarlet again in the new TA path, I just sort of felt sad and disappointed, and not at all inclined to do it until my guildies decided it was time to just grit our teeth and trudge through it.
We were stopped by atrocious bugs in the Clockheart fight, haven’t tried again since, and whenever it gets mentioned everyone in the call groans.

So I’m done. I’m just sort of sitting back, avoiding everything LS/achievement related until Halloween, so I don’t burn out completely and I can actually enjoy the content.

I had to swap from playing with my engineer who I prefer to play due to the complexity of the class, to my faceroll-everything warrior.

I need to level my mes and guardian to 80, I think..

Untrue. I could solo the boss on my staff ele (not bragging, I actually did it) so you should be fine on your engineer. The trick is to not melee hug the boss and pull the adds to IT, but vice versa. Stay near the holos, let the boss come to you while you dodge that 1 or 2 spinning gears, and when they’re both together, blow up the hologram, hit the boss a few times and run to the next one.

Once my team got the idea, we facerolled the boss instead of vice versa.

Nah, perfectly true, for me. I’m visually impaired, as in legally blind in one eye and I have poor vision in the other. This is the first time it’s been absolutely necessary, but due to the incredible amount of bugs, constant FX all over the place, low lighting of the dungeon, and needing to be zoomed all the way out, I literally could not play my Engineer at the Clockheart portion of the dungeon. I had to switch to a class with higher damage output and better survivability to have a chance in there, and to live long enough to actually benefit my team. Everyone is different. I’ve done all other difficult content on my engie, generally with little issue.
One of the only other serious problems I’ve had was in Aetherblade Retreat dungeon during Frizz’ fight, where I had severe issues seeing the telegraph for the golem’s pull move if they were any distance from me, haha.

And I do perfectly understand the mechanics of the fight; I knew them going in the first time because our group leader checked beforehand.

I had no problem with the oozes at all.. or anything in the dungeon. Except that horrifyingly buggy, broken Clockheart. I swear I think my guildies and I got every possible glitch that thing can hurl at you. I talked about it more in-depth here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/twilight/Constructive-feedback-for-new-TA-path/first#post2968394

It was bad. The oozes did have a habit of aggroing on people who didn’t even have the drop on their heads, but we managed it after a few tries. The Clockheart.. not so much, and I sort of dread even attempting it again.

Photoloss: Nope. I had to swap from playing with my engineer who I prefer to play due to the complexity of the class, to my faceroll-everything warrior. Because the engie was just melted by all the crap and the benefits I was giving everyone were outweighed by how badly I was getting slapped around. I went through Aetherblade Retreat, Tequatl, and countless other difficult content with my Engineer, but this time I just couldn’t do it because I was letting my team down. Also, yes, our mes did a whole lot for us.

I need to level my mes and guardian to 80, I think..

Gave up for tonight due to nonstop teleporting generators (not hyperbole, the teleporting would not end), endure pain occasionally, mysteriously not working during the big stomp attack for me, boss not resetting, hurling me into the aforementioned telegenerators, and mesmer/ranger illusions/pets goofing things up horribly. Would have asked the mes and ranger to change characters but I’m playing with guildies and those are their only level 80’s. Had to switch from my engie to my warrior as well, which I’d rather not do, but eh. Simple fact is that he just does more damage and survives better.

Also at one point the clockheart hurled me into the air where I got stuck on nothingness and ground to death by gears below. No frickin’ clue what that was. Ah yeah, and getting hung up in the telegenerators during the electric floor.

We had no problem with any part of the dungeon besides that glitchy, nightmarish encounter and we were all having the issues save for my weird endure pain thing. It really is like the whole encounter just broke for us. Gonna try tomorrow, and hope to get lucky with less bugs.

I haven’t used turrets since my main was level 50-ish (a year ago), save for healing turret during Tequatl event and Supply Crate for emergency heals. Actually, I have used turrets a few times.. As aggro shields to get a mobs attention off of me. And then, even rocket boots or the unreliability of Toss Elixer S are generally better in an emergency.

Which is pretty sad. I also don’t know another engie that uses turrets save for a few friends right when they started playing the class. They stopped quick, though.

If you run out to where Blightghast stands usually, he might reappear. You can give him a quick slap with your weapon, then run back toward the boat you came from and the story should resume as normal. This happened while I was helping my wife get through her personal story a few days ago.

We waited a good five minutes for him to show, when she walked out to where he landed in the cinematic he sort of just popped into existence.

LOL

You guys are forgetting one important detail…

You don’t know what Scarlet’s motive yet…

How about you let them finish the story.

Flat Character LMAO
Not one you have a clue on the … (cough) letter on the subject.

Her base motive that started all this? I never personally said anything about her motive, but you’re addressing all of us, so.. I know what it is, and you should, too, if you’re fond of her. Your comment leads me to believe you don’t? It’s stated right in the short story.. and should have been in the game, but whatever.

It’s just an awful motive in this context and is a bit paradoxical. She’s raging against something which absolutely cannot be escaped.

Which has considerable potential, but the writers seem unaware of using it in a way which actually would be interesting. Heck, they might even be unaware of the paradox itself, I don’t know.

“That whole statement made no sense, and you are making statements for me, so I will do the same and bump my post at same time.”

So you are basically telling me by writing this you KNOW Scarlet is awesome, that is fantastic I only agree to that and nothing you ever stated before or after this comment about how you love Scarlet.

Nah. Just pointing out something you yourself stated. I don’t need to put words in your mouth for that, and I’m sorry if you had trouble understanding it.

You seem upset that others don’t like Scarlet. It’s fine to like her, but it’s probably best to recognize her for what she is and the caliber of writing put into her. You don’t need to defend yourself by trying to make her and her writing out to be something they’re plainly not. Like I said, I like watching awful old b-movies sometimes, I don’t have to try to compare them to Citizen Kane to justify my enjoyment of them to myself or anyone else. They’re bad movies and I like them because they amuse me, but a lot of people can’t stand things like Sharknado, even for comedic value. You like Scarlet, I don’t, and both of those things are okay.

Now, I’ll be bowing out of this back-and-forth between us, as I’ve said what needed to be said and, while I can hope, I don’t really see this exchange improving in tone. I have a pretty good idea why this thread was made in the first place, and I don’t have much interest in humoring any more than I already have.

Who says elder dragons have to be evil?

Egon Vidar.9125

Maybe the Dragons are like Honey Badgers (Or their more Badkitten flying cousins, the Honey Buzzards). They just don’t give a kitten either way. They just want to consume all the Magic on Tyria, and will destroy anything that gets in their way. They don’t care that other life exists, but they will destroy them in order to get to that sweet succulent magical energy that they crave so much!

That’s.. pretty much the impression that I get, yeah. They just strike me as being terribly indifferent, not so much evil. Except Zhaitan does occasionally give the feel of being a bit malicious, but I have also seen humans act outright maliciously toward insects with no provocation whatsoever.

And that’s what it seems to be. Humans are to insects as Elder Dragons are to living creatures on Tyria. Just as we’ll use, exterminate, and lash out against bugs, Elder Dragons will do the same to the races of Tyria.

That’s not to say I’m overly fond of them or think that they’re good. I don’t, and I don’t like what they do or the methods they use, and I understand they need to be stopped, but I don’t see them as evil, either.

i belive that zhaitans only goal is to corrupt and eat magic, what its minions play at means nothing at all to him, its hunger is their hunger, so they feel the need to find magic items and feed them to it, the only time zhaitan came out of its hiding place was when it was cornered, starved, blind and on its last legs… err… wings? i believe that the eonly ‘emotion’ zhaitan feels is rage and hunger, something like that cannot be sapient

Even if those were his only goals, that would not necessarily make him mindless. Simple goals do not a simple mind make. The fact that Zhaitan got fed up with you and came out to put a stop to you himself, and the fact that he never did beforehand, has no negative bearing on his intelligence. If you can just stay in your home and have everything delivered to you and not have to deal with people who’ll give you a lot of trouble, you’d probably stay as long as you could, too.. Until they started cutting off your deliveries and breaking your stuff. Then you might go outside and try to give them the what-for.
And you probably wouldn’t be expecting them to shoot you with giant magical lasers either, haha.

Zhaitan created his minions. Thralls, which have what seems to be a tiny smidge below human base intelligence. Higher order risen are as intelligent as people are. Blightghast and Tequatl and the other big dragon risen are also probably just as smart, because it wouldn’t make any sense to have a dumb lieutenant, either. Why and how would a non-sapient creature make minions that are smarter than it is? Doesn’t make a ton of sense to me, honestly. If it doesn’t comprehend higher intelligence I don’t know how it would understand even the need for it, even for its own protection. Abominations are bright, too, and those ones are just plain cobbled together out of parts, and the big dragon risen miiight be the same way, we don’t really know with them. Either they were made or they’re the remnants of a dragon species he made risen, and he’s been smart enough to keep them around and put them in important roles where they would be most beneficial to him, as I suspect without his guidance, they’d probably just wander the lands smashing random settlements, just pushing forward, like monumentally overgrown normal risen.

Heck, Zhaitan even made eyes to see all over the world, to obviously gather information, and mouths to eat with, because either he physically can’t (no lower mandible, possible lack of digestive tract?) or because it’s just more convenient for him. I don’t know that a non-sapient creature would be able to figure that out. As well, it’s said that the dragon knows all that his minions know (and I think knew in life?). Why would that be important information with implied devastating consequences if he’s an animal that can’t even understand the information? It’s said it goes to him. Not his other minions, not his lieutenants.

Sapience means a capability for reasoning/judgement/wisdom. A step beyond the self-awareness of sentience. He is definitely sentient, and given all the information we learn about him in the game, he clearly makes judgement calls such as when to come out of his lair, staying there as long as possible in the first place, making his minions smart, where and how to get more bodies and artifacts and how to get them back to Orr, and how to plan assaults such as Claw Island. I seriously doubt all that tactical knowledge falls to the lieutenants, and why would a dragon lieutenant be smarter than the big bad dragon itself? And they have been given a capacity to learn further than they already know. Tequatl sure has learned, and a capacity to learn is a very sophisticated thing. Why would Zhaitan give them/allow them that capacity if he didn’t recognize how important it is? That, too, is a judgement call, and a show of wisdom.

Zhaitan gives me the impression of a very great, but very alien intelligence. As does Jormag – hell, that one even straight up promises people power, and that is very bright. It reminds me of how humans have, for so long, thought that most other animals were stupid, unfeeling creatures. Now we know that many of them are sentient, a few have good reasoning and judgement skills (sapience!), and that their intelligence is just different from ours and evolved to suit different things, and is not considerably less as had been thought.

I think she is just Harley Quinn in Sylvari mode

same voice actor.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Scarlet_Briar

Trivia
Scarlet’s voice actress is Tara Strong.2

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/archive/speech/Scarlet-is-fantastic-Merged/page/3#post2682723

2013
Injustice: Gods Among Us (Video Game)
Harley Quinn / Raven (voice)

2012
Robot Chicken: DC Comics Special (TV Movie)
Harley Quinn / Selena Gomez (voice)

2012
Harley Quinn’s Revenge (Video Game)
Harleen Quinzel / Harley Quinn (voice)

2011
Batman: Arkham City (Video Game)
Harleen Quinzel / Harley Quinn (voice)

People don’t think of her as Harley’s VA because her voice actress for almost twenty years (1992-2011) was Arleen Sorkin, and I’m not entirely sure she’s been absolutely replaced yet or if Strong is just standing in. Tara Strong has only done her voice in two video games, a parody show, and a spin-off cartoon, she generally provides the voices of other characters in the DCAU and not primarily Harley.

Even though Mark Hamill has retired as the Joker since the last Arkham game, most people think of him as the Joker’s VA over, say, Jeff Bennett who has always done the characters voice in The Brave and the Bold, because Hamill was his VA for twenty years and in the main Batman DCAU franchise no less. Get what I mean?

Anyway, saying Scarlet is better than GW2’s other villains is like saying “well, at least eating this rotten bologna sandwich is better than eating the sludge out of the bottom of the garbage can.” None of them are really that great, Scarlet included, even with her “I saw the eternal alchemy!” retracted by the writers. Still, Canach was more interesting than she is and I’d like to see more done with him, he has by far the most potential. Though more as an anti-hero than a villain.

And I think it’s sad that I find Zhaitan to have a more interesting personality than she does, and he was intentionally written not to really have one. Or one which is comprehensible, at least.

Best villain? I think not. Quantity does not equal quality. Scarlet remains a Mary Sue.

Where is your evidence… I posted mine.

You failed to read it.

I am not Auruan, but consider this.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/SoYouWantTo/AvoidWritingAMarySue

Scarlet falls under every single universal trigger save for two: the one about romance, and the last one which is about something only seen in textual writing (writing style). Even with the “eternal alchemy” thing taken back. The entire article is worth reading. It is just fact that she goes against some of these basic writing rules.

I apologize if it bothers you that people don’t like her, myself included. It’s okay if you like her. I like watching cheesy old b-horror movies sometimes because they’re funny, nothing’s wrong with that. But she is not the best character by most standards of writing. Many don’t like her due to this, and find her too tiresome, cliche, and immersion breaking to be entertaining. Stating your opinion that she’s fantastic and better than all other GW2 villains as be-all end-all fact might just end up aggravating a few people. As you can see here. Like I said, I like b-horror movies sometimes, but I’m not going to go to a horror movie forum and start telling everyone that Plan 9 From Outer Space is a better movie than The Exorcist, because Reasons. I can list dozens of shakily constructed reasons, but that doesn’t make it true.

It’s a real shame. GW2 needs better villains, and especially some well written female villains, but Scarlet just falls flat.

Greetings. Timid rumors (no spoilers and details) reveals promising yummyes.

They’re planning something radically new and different, that wanted to implement a long ago, but did not have time (ths to impatient producers, as u could guess). The new path will be full of different puzzles, alternative ways, hiden rooms and secrets, with chests at the end, ofc. Not without reason devs mentioned that there will be something to do even after killing the last boss.

As I understand, they’re going to redo all the dungeons in future. You must have noticed that present dungeons are full of empty places, some (such as AC) even have obvious unfinished puzzles. Chests and mobs planned to be there. So think about this like a first step to a readjustment in all dungeons, like Tequila is the first step to readjustment of all bosses.

I think this is a neat attempt to find out the opinion of the players and, after evaluation of feedbacks, they’ll decide is it worth it.

If this is true, I wonder what it could mean for Arah story mode. Imagine the things they could do with that dungeon, now that they have time, especially if TA is a huge success and they’re willing to really go all out..

I think I’d be the happiest person in the world if the Zhaitan fight was overhauled and they put his corpse (updated model naturally) back in explorable mode.

Jumping on top of the boxes was incredibly easy and I don’t see how even an unskilled jumper could miss such a basic jump (and even if they did fail I don’t see how that’s any worse than saying a fight is poorly designed because someone is a bad dodger). You could even dodge or blink through the short laser if needed.

The hard part was not the jumping on top of a stationary box, it was doing so while paying attention to the golem pulls.
[snip]
paying careful attention to your surroundings (noticing where the lasers were and when the golems were about to pull), and having a clear understanding of the mechanics involved.
[snip]

Yeah, understanding the mechanics but being visually impaired (blind in left eye, poor vision in the other) made that dungeon barrels of fun.

It was impossible for me to tell if the box I was jumping onto was one I would actually land on, or a portion of box I’d just slide right back off of. And I could not see the golem tells if they were at any distance from me. Couple that with the fact I played with an engie who wasn’t traited for endurance regen and we don’t have tons of stability options, our group guardian could only do so much for me while I slid off box edges and got yanked around the room by golems.

I made it after thirty+ tries. Once my group knew how I needed to be carried and precautions that had to be taken, we did it a second time, because we all wanted monocles (none of us got them and I had to buy mine for sixty flippin’ gold).

I had no trouble with Frizz himself in the slightest or any of the rest of the dungeon, even Mai was a cakewalk in comparison. It’s not always a case of a player being unskilled, but the player having a true disadvantage that, when combined with particular mechanics, makes certain content a near impossibility.

I’ve got my Sunbringer title, my tequatl wings, I play fractals frequently, I’m generally not too terrible with jumping puzzles, etc. It’s only when I can’t see that I have any trouble with anything in the game. And I don’t play a forgiving class.

Grumbling about past wonky content aside, I do hope a lesson was learned and that the new dungeon path is challenging but a bit more.. considerate. What I really want is new and expanded lore for TA and the sylvari, honestly. And to just have fun.

I was playing my Asura guardian in Diessa Plateau, killing the ghosts at The Blasted Moors because it’s fun and lets me learn how to use the class pretty well. I was killing ghostly cannons and used Leap of Faith on one of them to destroy it, and as it blew up it somehow launched me beneath its platform and down under the terrain. There are invisible walls that prevent me from leaving, and the terrain disappears totally at certain camera angles, as does my asura. The ghosts no longer acknowledge me. I can go kinda far back under the map, but I’m a bit afraid of falling into the water level beneath and the terrain is pretty bizarre back there. Some stuff doesn’t have collision, I have to use an AOE to test the surfaces. I’ll have to waypoint to leave.

Creepy stuff, honestly.

Jump much sooner than you normally would (when the wave is 5-10 feet in front of you) and do it fairly close to Teq. I don’t know why, but it counted my jumps more frequently when I was closer to the dragon.

Aaand its me again.

My wife is having this problem right now, on TC server. I found a thread about it from five months ago and I guess the fix was a band-aid or it got broken all over again with the tequatl update. She was doing her personal story at the time that it crashed on her and wouldn’t let her back in.

She really wants to lvl her character to participate and get the teq wings but this is preventing her from even getting into the game.

Temples open on any servers?

My friend really wants PVT armour for the Tequatl event but the temples are contested on both his server (Sanctum of Rall) and mine as well (Tarnished Coast). So are there any servers with any or at least most of them open that he could guest to to get the armour he needs? If he could get Soldier’s armour elsewhere he would, but apparently it can’t be crafted.

Tequatl was defeated on an overflow comprised mostly of people from Sanctum of Rall, some TC (like myself), JQ, and I think some Blackgates. There were I think 70 of us in Raidcall at one point.

I did the event just a bit ago on Sanctum of Rall in a vent call with 50 other players and two Anet devs. We didn’t defeat him but we got him pretty far down, and it was honestly one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had in this game. It really brings the community together, every one was friendly and organized, and aided me in bringing the right skills and traits to benefit everybody. Getting to chat with devs and play with them was also fantastic.

Please don’t change the event. It’s really bringing people together and teaches excellent teamwork skills in pve, which we sorely need.

That is really strange because I did participate and killed things. I have no idea what went wrong, haha.

I have had it happen a long time ago closer to launch, where dragon chests wouldn’t spawn even though I definitely did enough in the event to receive credit. That was a physical chest, though, and as far as I know the Teq reward chest is a popup. I’m not sure if the old dragon chest bug was because it didn’t register me receiving credit or if the chest spawn itself was glitched.

Regardless, it’s odd. I’ll participate in the event again later and see what happens.

I just did the Tequatl event on Sanctum of Rall. We managed to get the dragon almost to 50%, though not quite. It made it to the battery event. There was a 25% chest, though.

Which I didn’t receive. I was running support for the turreters, as an engineer. I healed them and removed conditions, dropped supply crates and healing turrets, killed Teq fingers, and any risen that began over-running the area.

I was lead to believe that people playing support would get credit for the event, but I suppose not. What do I have to do to get credit for the event? Attack Tequatl himself? Which I actually did at one point. He was weakened and I shot him a few times before heading back to the turrets.

I hate that I have to post this, but I’m really curious about what I need to do.

So, uh.. have you tried dodge rolling? Healing? Staying near Guardians or, hell, asking if you can group with a water ele because you need help? Anything? Sincerely wondering if this is a troll post after this:

No offense, but Beast is right. It’s probably just you. I rarely die during the fight against Tequatl, and I know most of the people there probably don’t die that much.

As others have said, genie and djinn mean the same thing. Jinni/djinni is the plural of djinn (sometimes), and “genie” is the French translation from Arabian Nights, and it just stuck. As far as I remember at least. It’s been a very long time since I’ve read on the topic.

If you want to draw even more attention, if Lion’s Arch reaches overflow point where people can’t get in, begin invading the racial cities as well. Probably in order of popularity so it’s actually noticeable, and station the group somewhere that can’t be missed. Divinity’s Reach would probably be next, then Hoelbrak, etc.

Putting people in parties would also help due to the “Join in Lion’s Arch” option, to squeeze in as many as possible. Once all of them are full, start moving them to the next server on the list.

A guild would help to keep this organized.

edit: for clarification, I’m advising going to racial cities so this will be contained to one server as much as possible, overflows are their own servers.

I’m definitely interested in this. My main is an engie and even though I have eight characters, he’ll always be my favorite. Which makes the problems with the class so much worse. I can’t just put him on a shelf and ignore him, I like him too much.

As well, I have a charr character. A thief. Medium armour on them is horrendous.

We need to settle on a server as fast as possible so word about it has a few days to really circulate, word of mouth could help a lot. I’d also advise posting this on as many forums as you can to get the word out, just not to the point that you aggravate people or get a spam infraction, heh.

We should wear something like the Whisper’s armor set so we’ll look like a cult. ^^

Not every engie is in Whispers (I’m Priory) and that’s kinda expensive. I’d suggest a cheap, low level, craftable armor. Outlaw armor or at least everyone wearing an Outlaw Mask could be good.

But more than anything, this really needs a lot more exposure.

Any other lore friendly Sylvari's out there?

My sylvari main wears human armour, has taken a surname, is an engineer, and uses a holographic rifle/an aetherized pistol. And he’s still perfectly lore friendly.

He just likes humans (surname makes interactions easier at times), finds inorganic tech interesting, and asura things catch his eye. As for the armour, basically wearing his own flesh as a shield discomfits him deeply, even if other sylvari prefer it. He’s a weird individual, but, well.. he’s meant to be his own individual. Though, I am considering giving him cultural shoulders, not sure which ones yet.

As well, his height is maxed out, and he wears a monocle and noble coat because I imagine he likes looking fancy. And as he’s meant to look like a tree, I made him tall like one.

But I will include an au naturel pic.

Major disclaimer: no promises, no schedule, etc… But if you were daydreaming about what you personally want for your sylvari, what would it be? :} What would its presence feel like? What style? What materials?

My main sylvari has branch hair, and when I noticed that female sylvari get longer and more flowing branches, I felt a pang of jealousy, haha. They look more streamlined and nice. I really would like something like that, or something sort of akin to the T3 heavy oaken helm with leaves, so there’s more branch variety. And while I do have that helm on my warrior, I can’t exactly wear it on my engie main.

Long hair for males also, it’d look great on either my necro or mesmer.

Also, a few faces have built in “facial hair” and other odd little things – my warrior uses the very human, smooth face with the beard. My engineer, meanwhile, has thorns growing out of his cheeks, and my mesmer appears to have pistils growing from his brows. If these could be optional additions with more selections, that would be awesome. Like different beard type growths, thorns, ridges, petals, etc. There are a few faces I don’t like that I otherwise really would if small things like that could be tweaked the way Norn facial hair can. The odd mustache on the Canach Face is a good example.

And to go even more off the wall, more vibrant secondary skin colors would be immensely appreciated. I was going to make my engie’s secondary color pale pink over white bark, but instead he’s stuck with a dull, dark maroon..

Also if you were the one who handled the design of Trahearne, can you possibly share some thoughts on that, maybe? I have a few issues with him writing-wise but I think his design is absolutely excellent and perfect for a sort of reclusive scholar of a necromancer.

I’m not the most skilled at newer games, but I have a lot of muscle memory and experience from oldschool games and platformers, so I usually do fairly well in the SAB. It’s difficult like those old games were, which I appreciate. There are some posts in here about things that I didn’t find difficult at all. I haven’t played the Pain Cliffs area yet, but intend to tomorrow. I’ll have to see how severe that one is when I get there.
I made about 12 bauble bubbles today and used only two continue coins.

That said, I’ve run into a few issues.

- There are instances where you can jump on lily pads in poisonous water and still get hurt, even if you never touched the water.
- Sometimes when monkeys throw coconuts, there’s no red x to mark where they’re going to hit.
- The rapids on the raft are problematic. They make me dizzy and motion sick. That, and if you’re standing on the wrong part of the raft when it turns, you might just get pitched into the water. Which is somewhat unavoidable when an assassin is chasing you across the raft while you wait for your whip to cool down.
- You could be standing a good foot outside of the red center of the fly trap flowers and have them snap shut on you anyway.
- Rapids occasionally just punch you into the water even if you’re standing solidly in the middle of a rock, on a turtle, or on a crocodile without any part of your body anywhere near being in contact with the water. Hell, even when you’re just jumping over the water, sometimes. And the geysers just seem buggy.
- You can take a long time to line yourself up on flowers and get either tossed off to the side for no reason, or just drop like a stone in the middle of being launched.
- The log waterfall is nightmarish if you have below average vision. I can’t fault anyone too much for this, games just aren’t made for people with vision as poor as mine, but I figured I would point it out regardless. It would be helpful if the logs and the ground you’re to try to land on was a little more prominent for that section.
- There really are many spots where you have to stand in midair to hit a croc or turtle. I don’t mind it so much because I play a sylvari and know exactly how to plant (harr har) my ridiculously tiny feet, but I feel badly for charr players dealing with that.
- The whip loves to not hit things at all unless you’re standing so close you’re going to lose a heart anyway. Even then, sometimes not.
- There are so many jumps you’re required to make from tiny ledges while the camera is so far up your behind all you can see are your floating eyeballs and mouth plate that it’s crazy. It’s bad enough being blind on one side, and playing a max height sylvari makes it worse. I feel badly for anyone playing a character larger than mine.

I sincerely doubt these are latency issues as I’m a QA tester for another game and it’s pretty easy for me to recognize by this point when the trouble I’m having is due to lag, the only thing that I think could possibly be chalked up to that is dropping during a launch, but I have a few doubts about that because I’ve seen it elsewhere with the same launch mechanic with no one else around. I did have obvious latency problems with other things, but those are not listed here as they’re not relevant. As well, I’m almost thirty years old and I grew up with games more difficult than the SAB. The above problems really have nothing to do with difficulty, exactly, but more to do with design issues.

I find SAB really entertaining and fun.. except for when I barrel into one of those design flaws, usually with no forewarning. Then it becomes a mess of frustration and annoyance.

I’m not plugging my ears and screaming LA LA LA here. If that’s not the issue, great. I’ll adjust. I’ve said multiple times now that my goal with Normal Mode is to make it a fun experience for average players. At this point you can believe me, or just keep calling me a lying fraud. Whatever.

Please don’t take this wrong. Defensiveness isn’t going to help. People are both offering advice and becoming a little upset (a cool head would help everyone here) because they care about the game. They really, really do care about what you made, and the sensible ones aren’t here to attack you personally. I have to deal with this stuff both as QA and as an illustrator and most people here mean well. Even I could probably use more tact in my post above, but I’m very tired. And rambled too much. I also apologize that I only made it to page 3, I need to go back and read the rest when it’s not 4 in the morning.

Should Sylvari have never been made?

in Lore

Posted by: Egon Vidar.9125

Egon Vidar.9125

I have four sylvari characters, and my main is one, and even I have issue with them.

I avoided info about GW2 for a long time, knowing Anet’s penchant for accidentally dropping spoilers too soon. So the game came and ever since I had seen screencaps of a sylvari months prior, I was taken with them. So I made a sylvari engineer, as it seems like those things should go together about as well as chocolate and mayonnaise and I figured it would bring up some interesting story stuff. There were hints of depth to the story at the very beginning.. but it never really panned out to any actual degree. Nothing came of my race/profession combo either (not really my beef here however), but I suppose charr casters also have that problem. Regardless, I kept making sylvari alts, just to play through all the stories, hungry to see them make use of the potential I saw there.
But it never came, really.

I still like my main a lot and play both him and my sylvari warrior most of the time, and I want to like the race. I really do. I love their concept.. but the execution is so lackluster. And it doesn’t help that almost every time I have to interact with a sylvari npc for more than a few minutes, I end up cringing. I’m not even going to talk about Scarlet.

It’s gotten to the point that it’s sometimes almost embarrassing to say “I like/play sylvari” because, depending on context, it can almost imply you like sloppy writing. I don’t.

I want people to be intensely suspicious of me because my character’s race is so young yet so numerous. I want them to be bad at things. I want them to have shades of grey, and depth in their stories, and for the race to stop being the center of attention in the plot just because sylvari are easy to write due to lacking long backgrounds. I want humans to be nervous around my character because they can be so off, and so childlike in an adult form. I want the Pale Tree to make mistakes, “good” sylvari to do terrible things because they want to or because that’s their only choice, and for Nightmare Court to do things that aren’t completely mind-blowingly evil. Hell, even indifferent explorers would be nice. Just.. variation, and depth. Please.

I like the sylvari, though not necessarily the way some of them were used. And if I’m honest, the accusation of how awful it is that they are liked by everyone and good at everything is kind of amusing. Not only is it hyperbole, but I can’t help but suspect a little “sour grapes” at the fact that for once, humanity isn’t the end-all, be-all, superspecial golden child of awesome, as they are in a huge number of settings. And I LIKE the fact that humanity isn’t like that here because I’m tired of it.

Nah. I like sylvari too, and I’m also (massively) tired of humans hogging the limelight in fantasy settings, but the way sylvari are written as consistently great at most things and not frequently disliked to any degree that actually matters isn’t very good writing. It lacks depth in a setting like Tyria. Has absolutely nothing at all to do with humans and their place in the world – they could be top dog, bottom rung of the latter, or gone entirely – sylvari writing would still be an issue.

Colorblind friendly options? please?

in Suggestions

Posted by: Egon Vidar.9125

Egon Vidar.9125

I hate to say it, but a bunch of people, myself included, have been asking for this since launch. I have absolutely no idea why they won’t do it.

My own problem is that, while I’m not colorblind, I am legally blind in one eye, and AOE circles are partially transparent and also very thin. I’m normally a decent player, but it’s completely undermined when I can’t see AOE circles at all on snow, red backgrounds (lava fractal and Megadestroyer event ahoy!), or some brown backgrounds. Doubly difficult when a lot of mobs don’t telegraph obviously enough for me to be able to see it.

And often when I can see the AOE circle, I can be standing several feet outside of it and still get hit.. What the hell?

Not only does this game severely need colorblind support (a surprisingly large percentage of men are colorblind), but the AOEs need to be overhauled to where someone with subpar vision can still see them since few people have perfect vision – I am blind in one eye but the other eye should be decent enough to be able to pick them up, but they’re just too vague, and nigh on invisible on some background colors. As well, telegraphing for big moves should be more obvious, and you shouldn’t be able to be hit if you’re outside the AOE circle! That’s the whole point of having an AOE circle!
