Edit: A-Net has many things on their priority-list. And 1v1 duels are on the bottom of it (I hope it for this game though). 1v1 won’t work because this game is not balanced around 1v1. Second thing are the common builds that dominate the meta. It’s NOT fun to duel with a cantrip-ele or a bunker-guard.
We could say let’s restrict these two builds in duel-arenas. But then again, probably another build would pop in. Guess what? Yep, the boring BM-Ranger.
Because of these and other points i won’t list here, it’s a bad idea.

So you guys know, we already split some skills. And, what’s most pertinent to the current thread, we plan to do this even more.

When we first shipped, it was awesome to have a lot of the balance be the same between PvE/WvW/PvP. But, as you guys have really started to push the game types to their limits, classes and specs that work in one areas of the game are sometimes ineffectual in others.

Due to this, we’ll have to do more splitting of skills to better balance the various areas of the game.

TL:DR – We already do this, and we’ll be using it even more in order to balance the different areas of the game effectively.

Please, don’t do the same you did with GW1, where some skill splits were so drastic, that they effectively became two different kind of skills for each of their format. That was horrible. So far, all skill splits have dealt with numerical differences only. I hope it keeps going that way.

Please don’t compare GW1 to GW2. It’s a different gameplay. As in GW1 skillz only need little changes due to PvP and PvE was nearly on the same level, in GW2 PvE/WvW/PvP couldn’t be more different. E.G.: Warrior “best” class in PvE, “worst” class in PvP. Or vice versa with the elementalist. Also RTL is something in PvE that doesn’t really matter, but becomes in PvP one of the key-skillz.

So in a sentence: It’s absolutely needed to seperate skillz between these modes.

introducing new skills and discarding others for sPvP would be much better for me. like this i just get totally confused about how which skill works depending on where i am.

Rather, they should have a guild ladder and an individual ladder, so premades have to play under a guild tag.

I don’t know how things going in NA, but in EU the guild-ladder would probably cotain 15 guilds max. It’s too early/too late to do that.

rofl – are you being serious? I actually just made a warrior build 3 days back that uses undead runes/rabid amulet with longbow and sword/sword. Was running 0/30/20/20/0 build with power/condition banner stamina signet and balanced stance.

My condition dmg was around 1600 with over 2k toughness and your banner is useful for swiftness and one rush on it. Was trying it in tpvp and actually killed some guardians/engies with it… but it struggles against classes that get up in your face like the ele d/d.

I thought it could be somewhat viable… but it is sad how much harder you have to try on this toon compared to others to achieve any results.

I said on competitive teams, with VOIP. No point to play warrior in soloQue, because you need ppl who can carry you.

Bunker spec for ele:

Traits: 0 / 0 / 10 / 30 / 30

Earth: III (earth’s embrace)
Water: III (Soothing disruption), IX (Cantrip Mastery), XI (Cleansing Water)
Arcana: IV (Final Shielding), V (Elemental Attunement), XI (Evasive Arcana)

Utilities: Armor of Earth, Mist Form, Lightning Flash, Ether Renewal.
Elite is up to you, what you prefer.

Weapons: Scepter / Dagger
Sigils: Sigil of Energy (triggers on attunement switch), second sigil is up to you.

Amulet: Cleric Amulet / Shaman Amulet
Rings/Accessoires etc.: Based on healing power / toughness / vitality (whatever comb you prefer)

Runes: Water / Monk / Earth (whatever you prefer)

I explain quickly how this works:
You have 3 cantrips. On every cantrip you activate you get vigor and regeneration. Whenever you gain regeneration you loose 1 condition.

Attunements:

Water-Attunement:
Whenever you swap to water-att. you heal up to 3k life, gain regeneration and through that you loose a condition.
Skills: You have on water-attunement 2 heals (water-trident, cleansing wave) that gives you up to 3k heal per skill. with frost-armor it’s easy to kite melees (especially thiefes)
Whenever you dodge on water-att. you get heal up to 3k (cd: 9s). All heal / regeneration you get through Water is AoE based (affect nearby allies)

Air Attunement:
Whenever you swap to Air-Att. you get swiftness.
Skills: you have 1 blind, 1 knockback which gives you also swiftness. The most important skill “Ride the Lightning” is one of the best escapes in game ( if you go low-health use it to get out) and is also a great movement skill. Whenever you dodge on air-att nearby foes are blinded.

Earth-Attunement:
Whenever you switch to earth attunement you get protection.
Skills: nr. 3 is good for aoe blind. Nr. 2 reduces dmg, nr. 4 is aoe knockdown, 5 is for great aoe dmg. whenever you dodge on earth-att nearby foes get crippled and bleeding.

Fire-Attunement:
Whenever you swapp to fir-att you get 1 stack might.
Skills: Basically you combo: Phoenix (2) then cast the ring (4) and then phoenix (3) + fire grab (5). This is not only for dmg. This provides you a lot of might-stacks. (blast finishers in firefields give you 3 stacks-might per blast). Whenever you dodge on fire-att. nearby foes get burning + dmg.

Heal-Skill: Ether Renewal can be replaced, but for me it’s the best heal out there. When you can channel it to the end you get about 7k heal and loose 8 conditions in 3 seconds.

In conclusion: You have access to massive condition remove, lot of boons (regeneration + protection), you are a great support for a whole team due to boon-sharing (trait) and attunement-swapping + dodging which effects allies too. You have more than 2k toughness and 3k armor. You have the ability to escape a battle (Ride the lightning). You have anti-melee conditions as chill (frost-armor), earth-attunement dodge (cripple), blinds. You have access to several heals (water-trident, cleansing water, dodge on water-att., swapping to water-att. ether renewal).

Watch out! The best mesmer from GW2 is teaching us how the game will be played around mesmers, while he QQ how strong churning earth is.

To the topic: this build is in no way viable in tournaments. You have absolutely no damage. I mean even a thief can stay next to you dancing and won’t die. Also you lack of condition remove heavily (like every mesmer does). So probably every player that knows how this build works, can counter it.

@stof: Bunkers are the placeholders for dedicated healers. That’s the reason why they exist. But I think they should be forced a bit more into team support.
On the other hand GC’s exist because there are bunkers.
I’d say this is the reason overall, why it’s so hard to balance this game and having on most classes just one viable spec.

Silven already explained to you that there are diminishing returns on armor values over 2.9k…

which is not true at all…

To clear up some more things:

  • I meant armour not toughness (my bad), armour suffers from DR above around 2.9k, the maths is on the Guardian forums.

I just tested this theory and I’d love if you could point me to that math on the guardian forum, so I could clear up some misunderstandings and misconceptions. Armor scales linearly without diminishing returns.

The false conclusion is probably that people expect armor to reduce damage by X points for every Y armor they add, when in reality this is not how scaling works. Instead for every X armor you add, you reduce the damage by Y% in a linear fashion (if damage reduction scaled differently, you could reduce damage to zero given enough armor).

The formula is Weapon Damage*Power*Skill Coefficient/Armor

Focus brings nothing to a teamfight except more survivability for yourself as well as a very gimmicky blind that rarely lands.

Well, why focus? more survivability to you (how selfish these bunkers are!!), It’s in most cases a safe-stomp (if no stability is up), it’s soooooooo much easier to cap shrines on temple or orbs on SW. Is it really that bad?

Why Sword? It’s an instant port if you being knocked out of the point, it’s a blind, you are 3 secs immune to projectiles. And the best part: your third attack on it will hit 3 times. If you put +5% crit-chance on it this means you have 30 – 40% crit-chance. If you traited right you get vigor on crit-hits. Ergo you dodge more, ergo on every dodge you heal nearby allies.

That’s just my point of view and relies on my gameplay. So the good thing about bunker guard is you can pretty much trait everything. The only thing that is really necessary is “Pure of Voice”. No need to bash ppl down because they have a different meaning.

Most people prefer to run bunker/support rather than a pure bunker, just pure of voice to support means you miss out on Chains of Light, Banish, Sanctuary and Empower. If you know you’re going to win every fight without support then sure have more toughness to stomp, but I don’t understand the wasted points in Condition Damage. You can actually put out a lot of pressure with Cleric/Knight and I think Inner Fire/Blind Exposure are much better traits than Honourable Shield, you can still get the perma vigor from Vigorous Precision while playing more support.

Sorry for the missleading content about + 5% crit-chance. This comes from the sigil and has nothing to do with traits. My bad though.

Tipp: If you hear the automated guy crying “Trebuchet!” blabla… you can count on “3” (on clocktower) or “4” (on side nodes) and then dodge. If you practice this enough, it’s not needed to watch the sky. Therefore the guard should count for the whole team.

Hammerwarriors or mesmers without portal are in the category of r10+ players. They don’t know yet the full potential of their class when it comes to pvp.
For e.g. when I see a signet-warrior, I promise it’s a beginner, who has no understanding what to do on the map.
A good player runs viable builds, what you listed above are not viable builds (guardian excluded).

In some cases you’re absolutely right. In the case of the thief I don’t think so.
Everything a thief can do, another class can do it better (e.g. condition, teamsupport, AoE-dmg, cc, survivability) The only thing that no other class can do, is this rapid burst from hide.
But that is just my opinion on it. No need to feel attacked by my words.
Inventors are still necessary, in every aspect. So keep it up.

Well, I could try to explain a r10 player what to do. In reality these players just run around and capping the nodes together. They don’t get it. And all ppl that are on a higher ranks like r30+ know allrdy what to do. Due to that I stopped soloqueing because the mmr is horrible and to get matched together with pve players is rather frustrating.

Ive been playing for a while now, and honestly I dont think there is a need to talk. Everyone should know atleast the basic strat for each map, if they dont they can ask, and I can explain real quick. What I usually do, specially in foefire, is as soon as I know someone is going close, I know i have to go through the front door to mid, if after I go through the front door more than one person is going far, im going far, and if i see someone, other than a guard, going alone to their certain death alone in mid I will ping them so they atleast know theyre going alone to mid. Its a simple way to set up the strategy without talking, and of course im assuming the other people know what theyre doing even if only superficially; if they dont i dont see the difference talking over a strat would do. As you play more these guidelines you follow become more complex and apply to most situations, therefore there is no need to talk, hence the “talking is for noobs” comment. If someone explicitly asks for a strat before the match a simple “4-1, 1-3-1” and so one should suffice.

And if it’s 1-3-1 who decides who goes where? It’s not psychic power. How do you know that guardian in your team isn’t GC? You can’t assume anything. You need to talk and discuss who fulfills what role.

Admittedly, people tell me it’s a Terrible spec at “high levels” but as a phantasm Mesmer I use null field and arcane thievery to smash Ele and also get rid of conditions.

As I said before, they may be right. It works for me and I keep winning. I can drop conditions, which shatter mesmers can’t. I can rip boons effectively, have the cc I need and damage output that I’m happy with. With the power/precision/vitality ammy and zerker jewel I like my stat distribution and my phantasm a bit hard and I can maintain long range with ledge and height advantage. Sometimes I take portal, other times I won’t bother and I even like to use Moa over the other elites for a guaranteed kill when I roam.

It works for me and until it doesn’t, I’ll continue to tear up tPvP with it. After all, all I do is solo que and don’t rely on a team or the synergy that comes with it.

If you solo Q that’s fine, due to no real communication. But you need at least one stunbreaker to not drop instantly to thieves you unaware of.

I’ve also tried several variations of the build, some with more sustain, some better movement and some with higher DPS and I really start thinking that the build is rather decent!

Well you can actually play every build you want. You can even run venom-share. But if it comes to competitive play, these builds are not viable enough.
To stealth: Thieves are one of the primary targets (especially in teamfights) due to low dmg-resistance. Imagine a thief without stealth. It’s just a free target. Like an engineer but without supply and elexier.

1.) A necro is not a counter to a shout-guardian, it’’s vice-versa. A shout remove 2 conditions (if you run the proper build).

2.) A good mesmer never run decoy/blink/null field/arcane thievery, because his other utilites like IoL and Portal are much much stronger.

In conclusion that means: (team vs. team) you have to focus on these single builds to be competitive enough. SoloQ is a different story.

Have you realized that we play for over 5 months the same meta? d/d thief, shout-guard, cantrip-ele, nade-engi, shatter-mes, bm-ranger /trap-ranger (wow there are 2 viable builds!!!) sometimes I see a dps-guard. And that’s it.
Surely it’s not priority one on the list, but it’s a big issue that this game gets boring and predictable.

It’s the same meta because of the sheep mentality of the community.

Me personally Ive been playing phantasm Mesmer, greatsword dps guardian and axe/mace warrior and enjoying it immensely and that’s in tournaments, not hot join. You choose to play those specs, as good as they are because the rest of the community tells you to and that its the only one that’s viable.

Play the weapons you like the play style of. I prefer control to outright damage and I get that more in my weapon and trait selection. I don’t lose too many games where I think being a different spec would have changed the outcome much.

Actually I prefer to win. Against competitive teams you won’t stand a chance with these “builds”. Ergo: you’re forced to play with these pigeon holded builds.

Otherwise it’s just a bunch of random people put together on a map.

It’s false because not just me, but other good players also communicate. In fact, the newer you are to PvP, the less you tend to communicate. I don’t know why.

Have you realized that we play for over 5 months the same meta? d/d thief, shout-guard, cantrip-ele, nade-engi, shatter-mes, bm-ranger /trap-ranger (wow there are 2 viable builds!!!) sometimes I see a dps-guard. And that’s it.
Surely it’s not priority one on the list, but it’s a big issue that this game gets boring and predictable.

I think they realized by now that its’ impossible to balance a game around 3 completely different modes with complete different gearing-possibilities. This will never work, not in a complexe game like that.
And I can promise: We won’t see a good balanced PvP when they refuse to split things between these modes. Seems like in the end this issue will ruin PvP.

Glory increases your rank (if you are talking about the purple bar at the bottom where the xp bar ususally is). Glory and rank points are basiclly the same thing. Each rank requires a certain amout of glory. Once the glory goes towards that rank it can’t be taken away. So if you are 1000 glory from a level you and you spend 500, you don’t need to earn 1500 to level, only the 1000 left.

Think of Glory as pvp karma and pvp exp. A glory booster thus boosts your PvP exp and the amount of pvp credit you can spend.

If you are talking about match making rank from tournaments then glory boosters will not affect this.

I recommend to remove your post, because it’s missleading and false content.

I have no problems if ppl give deadlines and aren’t ready by then. What I don’t get is that nobody from a-net is able to create a little post about: “We still have some issues with this and that, so we need more time”. I think ppl wouldn’t rage here if you’d do that.

And sentences like this….:
[We will leave this thread open, but will keep an eye on it. If it will get derailed or something like the earlier “incident” will take place, we will close it immediately.]

Danto’s build is the build I’ve been running since forever, but yeah, my gripe is that I don’t last long when I’m alone, or even in group if I get focused. I guess it’s just down to experience at this point.
I’d just like to see some very high ranked teamplay, talking about level40-50+ tournaments, to see which one brings more to a team between an engineer and a guardian. Does anybody have a stream, a youtube channel, anything? (possibly an updated one, don’t link videos older than 3 months)

Actually Curse Gaming (Danto plays for them) is the most competitive team from GW2. This build is more a support to the whole team than a full bunker-build. A full bunker-build as a guardian is just useless, because noone focuses you. That’s why this build is still the best out there.

There’s a trait called Alltruistic Healing: It describes your job in a few words.

AH only heals you, which is why it doesn’t see too much play in bunkering due to PoV and the need for indomitable courage.

What I want to point out is that you need allies in range to bring this trait to its full potential.

The amount of Points you need to rank up is fine (evekitten0k from 70 to 80).
The problem is you have not any option of progressive ranking. Compare it to GW1, it’s not about cosmetics at all.

I don’t think so. I think it’s pretty ridiculous. I mean, it took me 1038 games (mostly sPvP, some tournament) just to hit rank 30, playing on and off since release. If each game took 10 minutes that equals 173 hours or 7.2 days played time to hit a very low rank. I could level 2 characters to 80 in far less played time. Let’s not forget that the amount of points you need gets harsher the higher you go. Is it going to take another 5 days played just to go from 30 to 40? Anyone who thinks the current ranking is fine, probably plays 40 hours a week or is the carrot on a stick gamer type who wants a constant unattainable goal.

That’s why you need progressive ranking. I talk about win-strikes. In GW1 R15 was 100.000 fame. (you can compare it to rank 80 in GW2). For 1 win you get 1 fame.
But the point was and now read carefully: With every other win you rowed, you got added fame.
2 wins= 2 fame
3 wins = 3 fame
4 wins = 4 fame
5 wins = 6 fame
6 wins = 8 fame
7 wins = 12 fame
etc.

That’s what I mean with progressive ranking. God help me!

The problem with the ranking imo is that it should remain flat at a point. Its not giving anything but cosmetics, so the point to raise it is just silly imo.

I have to ask: Who is this high-rank requirement even made for? I mean is this really made for that one guy who just has absolute dedication to gw2 pvp and plays hotjoins only for 4+ hours a day? Spvp is already dead in comparison to PVE, why not just give it something for the casuals?

I understand setting the bar a little high, but this? Its like making an achievement “kill 5 trillion rabits” or something. Pointless.

Sorry if it wasn’t clear. What I meant is progressive ranking in terms of consecutive wins for example. This would be for tournaments: 2 wins in a row = 100 rank-point bonus, 3 wins in a row = 200 rank-point bonus, 3 wins = 300 rank-points etc. etc.).
The state now is about 300+ points every match. So yu earn every match about the same rank-points.

The rank-system at the moment is a complete failure. You can farm all day hotjoin and have a higher rank than a top tournaments player. Means you don’t need skill or anything to have a higher rank. It’s just about how much time you spend. So ye, rank in this game is meaningless due to hotjoin.
