Hi everyone,

I kinda returned to the game for the expansion, I played a bit at the launch of the original game, a few months, and I never played pvp back then. Long story short, I started to get bored again and figured I’d try pvp for a change.
I dont know if this is supposed to be happening but basically all the servers that have any people on them are just doing farming in the middle, mostly on skyhammer and nothing else.
I was trying to get some capture points here and there and actually play the game as it is supposed to be, but it didnt seem practical in that environment. Is that really all there is in pvp? 95% of servers dead with nobody on them, the rest is just farming?

Now obviously I am a noob, only been playing pvp for like 2 days but I dont find this experience too satisfying.

Is there any way to get some real games? at least try? please? or is that the big guild wars 2 pvp experience, and that’s it?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I play plenty of pvp…is it the time you logon? Just guessing, but I play at all times and get regular games.

However the state of pvp at the moment is a joke.

what sort of counter play do the devs think there is for this trap?

1) Using minions to trigger traps
2) Pressure from range
3) Stability/stunbreak/dodge if you get jumped on
4) Proper team play and rotation so you don’t get caught out 1v1 against classes that counter yours

Test of Faith should definitely be unblockable when you walk through the swords… I don’t think anyone is arguing that point.

But there’s also an “initial damage” component that hits right when you drop the trap. The fact that that initial damage is unblockable makes it very powerful when you combine it with sword2 or judges intervention. So maybe a compromise would be to remove the initial damage altogether and buff the damage taken when you cross the swords to compensate?

I’m not calling for nerfs cause that is indeed stupid.

However there are some particulars of your new class that leave me a bit speechless. It’s the smell really….unblockable this, instant that—it all smells very much like aged Gouda.

Whenever an advice is given, the OP ardently dismissed it into “the trap is a death sentence, there is no way around it (nerf please?”). Luckly we are not mesmers or he will go and ask for visual marker for the real one among the clones.

ok dudes, I think we got a good build here. made a few updates to it, thanks for all your feedback. when AS gets fixed to work with spike trap, it’s going to be even better.

I know some of u already abused this, but TU when spammed can fill up your AF bar so u always have that stun break. this allows me to drop LR and just grab viper’s nest, which means more invis.

spider’s 3s immob is basically gg for anyone getting hit by it. by the way, this build absolutely wrecks cele druids on point. give it a go.

i hope they let ancient seeds trigger from spike trap, i posted a bug report but i think it might be more of a balance thing,
imagine immobilizing and causing 5 stacks of bleed on someone while they’re on top of your traps? pretty epic XD

I think it’s a non-issue. because the way it works is spike does the knockdown, but you still have to follow up with an attack right away to trigger the seeds. and spike’s cd is quite long.

Did you run trapper ranger before druid/trapper?

How does it play differently?

My biggest issue with trapper is how incredible it can be and how horrible it can be depending on the team I am facing in pvp. (this is without druid)

Not only do rangers get access to frustrating amounts of daze but now they’re also rewarded for it with a free Entangle on a 10 second cooldown.

This is not okay, Daze is an unfun mechanic and it shouldn’t be rewarded in such a noninteractive way, either reduce the amount of daze they get or get rid of the snare component from Ancient Seeds.

Carrion works, Settler works. Rabid is not optimal unless you run a build that takes advantage of precision(crit) and Most ranger condi builds don’t.

this is with Trapper Runes (not in skill editor yet). it’s a pure trapper build, the way trapper is meant to be played. do yourself a favour and try it out if you haven’t already…you might be surprised. it’s fast and it hits hard. playstyle is frantic fun. I don’t see traps being played any other way. nothing revolutionary in the build at all, other than Natural Stride.

don’t worry too much about building AF, CF isn’t really needed. you will get enough force when fighting on point and going a lot of aoe damage, so it’s nice to have that extra stun breaker. but we go druid mostly for Natural Stride. if you’re ok with having no mobility, you can definitely go BM or NM for the taunt or protection. I didn’t need extra survivability, or more cc, so I traded for mobility so I could roam.

I spent the least time with this one, but it was really effective. Nothing too interesting at all – it just works. It’s also the most flexible regarding its third utility, sigils, and elite. you can grab another stun breaker, SoS, or Unity. I haven’t played around with glyphs and runes too much, so I just used Grove Runes for the perma prot. the stats are Minstrel (not in editor yet).

you can also go BM or even skirmishing instead of wilderness. but wilderness would give you the most survivability by far.

you’re supporting with your glyphs and building AF constantly. ive bunked a point against 3-4 scrubs at times. with your team there, you cant really die. it’s weakness is obviously getting locked down, but if your team is peeling for you a bit, it’s basically god mode.

I’m not sure about the future of pure support builds. but like any bunker, the minstrel build is entirely useless if you have a bad team. however, it enhances a good team in every way. this is the bunk guardian of the ranger profession.

I have 3 and I’ve quit mine for now. The changes they have made and continute to make are a huge disappointment.

I’ve been reading patch notes, they have showed favorable attention to Warriors, Guards, Eles (omg what a surprise) and Engis (actually a surprise) and the only thing they have done for rangers is F3k!ng up a pet? Really?

Just don’t understand why engj has too much useless abilitis againt scrapper. Copters are slow but much better then turrents.
Just look at ranger, no useless abilities (but broken spirits now). Traps are awesome.
Such at guardian, elementalist .
Only engjsucks there…

Don’t represent rangers as having no problems.
PLENTY of problems and problems with elite Druid.

I’m sure other posters have said this, but I got to experience it firsthand in PvP.

The fact that all the other classes have gotten stronger, better and hit harder leaves the Ranger at an increasing disadvantage.

Rangers in pvp were already not in an ideal position. While every other class takes two steps forward, we remain behind.

I hope I am wrong. I’ve had a blast playing the class in pvp. I like the community in game and on the forums.

But, the way Arenanet makes changes so slowly…..I expect the ranger to be buffed to a decent level sometime in the next two years. Right on time to buff the GWEN Meta (holy kitten I hate that word) right before another expansion buffs them again, leaving us in the same F3cK1ng position we are in now.

I still don’t know how so many rangers can be that bad in Guild Wars 2. All you need to do in dungeons is to use cats, have spotter and frost spirit, then do Barrage => Rapid Fire => Switch to Sword / Axe => Path of Scars => Sword auto attack => Path of Scars. And keep your pet on passive.

All you need to do is have the perfect trait lines, use the right utilities and then perform this particular order of rotation.

Did you even read what you wrote? Do you think for an instant, that a new ranger would know any of these things?

The problems with ranger’s stunbreaks is, that they don’t let you escape if caught in the middle of things like slick shoes, gravity well, everything else with multiple cc in a short time frame, because you get cc’ed again right after stunbreaking (LR gets often interrupted – can happen even against thief with basi venom). Ranger is the only class with no stunbreak tied to a mechanic like teleport, invuln or stability, which prevents subsequently cc.

I agree, at least a short stability or immune needs to be added.

I shouldn’t have to use two utilities to accomplish one escape.
As it is now, I have to use QuickZeph in addition to LightReflex just to safely get away.

you are already running 2 survival skills (but i would go for LR insted of QZ for stunbreak). Troll is the best heal, take troll and take wilderness knowledge. In the current meta quick condi clears are a must (burning), EB is way too unreliable. This way you get good condi clears + better heal + lower cd on your stunbreak + dps from fury + lower cd on entangle. You can also run birds since you arent running EB. Drop the bear in any case, bears are terrible. Run a bird (eagle or owl) and wolf. Take Oakheart salve in wildernes adept instead of expertise – much better choice, especially with settlers.

Best heal?
I don’t like Troll Ungent because it doesn’t help the group, it’s not an immediate heal, I can’t precast it and it’s basically just a really strong regen.

Not to mention it’s not anywhere near the best heal.
Troll Unguent is 958 per tick for 10 secs =9580.
Healing spring is precastable, heals everyone, removes ALL condis on my team, removes 1 from me. For healing purposes alone with my setup, Healing spring gives me an initial heal of 5820 plus a 6 sec regen of 8730 =that is almost the same TOTAL amount as Troll Unguent and it’s better per tick at 1455 per second.

Pets
I went back to wolf/bird. Wolf is just too strong on the point. And I like the bleeds from the bird. I don’t care that they are soft or that they die easily. I should be more careful with how I use them

Utilities
Lightning reflexes is great. What I don’t like about it, is actually getting me out of harms way. Sure it gives me that great jump back but I can do that with my sword. Removing condis at the cost of an incredible heal? Meh. Maybe later if I find it’s an issue. I like quickening zephyr because it has so many uses. Getting stomps on this build is a pain in the kittten, with quick zeph=so much easier.

Traits Oakheart salve. Sure, why not. A little more regen never hurt anyone and while I like the bleeds from my bird, I don’t think I am going to notice.

But now I see there are some other options I might want to consider.

Undead Rune vs Rune of the Krait
Rune of the krait is making my bleeds last longer but that generally doesn’t help since most classes remove the condi (and I only get partial dmg from it anyways). How much damage am I actually getting out of Entangle+Rune of Krait 6 Bonus?

Would the toughness outweigh the benefits of that bonus?

In a typical fight, I drop all my traps and entangle on a target and let them melt like the Witch from Wizard of Oz. That works often but not always and in those times it doesn’t work, it would be nice to be running with more toughness.

I keep flip flopping… ugh.

The biggest thing that concerns me, I make too many changes to be all tough and survivable and I lose out on what this build does best—better than any class in my most humble of opinions = Condi BURSST!

What do you guys think?

You make some good points.

Currently, medium to short fights are in my favor.
This is by no means a sustained cele Ele Ranger :P

The upside, if I get onto a point, the traps hit like a truck and catch people off guard. Heal trap makes me more survivable than many give it credit for. But, I am kitten when I get stunned (can’t dodge or evade when stunned)

I do notice that my pets die quickly. I kept my wolf (fear is too good) and picked up Murrelow that emits a lovely poison gas.

I definitely can’t give up spike trap. The dmg is too good, The CC is what gives me guaranteed dmg and it’s too much fun to drop it in a group.

Alright—so here is the revised version. Looks solid.
-More damage potential from weapon swaps through sigils (geomancy + doom)
-More survivability via traits (Empathic Bond)
-More damage via traits (Quickdraw)
-An escape, stun break and quick stomp (quickening zephyr)
-A tougher pet that also has aoe poison (Murrelow)

But it has its limits and isn’t too hard to counter by competent players. Just great against noobs, who run without condiclear and just sit in those traps all day long like shown in the video.

Only class I have had trouble with, at least in a pvp setting is some necros and a very small percentage of guards. In WvW I ran into a lb Warrior who had perfect timing to remove my condis. And while I couldn’t kill him, he could not kill me either.

The thing is, you can’t clear the conditions quick enough for them not to take a chunk of your health.

There are weaknesses to the build, ( /laugh Competent Players )
But clearing my conditions is not one I am overly concerned with.

When you walk over one, you are walking over three which means you are getting knocked down= burning, bleeding and poisoned while CC’d. You are definitely taking a fair amount of damage even if your ping is amazing and so are your reaction times.

Besides, that’s just my traps.
How many condi clears do you have?

Do you think the fight is over cause you cleared 1 round of condis?
EEore Voice “I might as well give up now, he just cleared my conditions…game is over… life is hard. I won’t use any of my weapon skills, pet skills. Why does that cloud always follow me.”

Real concern from me =classes that can go temporarily immune to my condis while doing some amazing burst dmg=warriors. Thieves who can skate past them and still get on top of me. The quickest death is easily when a necro transfers all that condi kittene right back onto me. Ouch that hurts.

Tweaks I have made I am a little unsure of.

Sigils
Double energy seemed like overkill.
Instead of double energy, I put +dmg modifiers on my first weapon set.
My thinking is, I would help front load the trap dmg.

No double geomancy to make space for the dmg modifiers.
What I don’t know, is it that much of a burst difference with the damage modifiers?

Would double geomancy be better damage for burst AND sustain? ie-In situations where they took some condi burst, cleanse—I weapon swap and then reapply condi pressure.

Amulets
Everyone tells me to take Rabid= Condi Toughness Precision
But precision doesn’t do anything for me. None of my traits rely on precision. I’m not a PU mesmer. Am I wrong?

What I currently use
Settler Toughness Healing Condition
This has me setting at 15,992 hitpoints(2200 toughness). My healing spring is 5820 Initial heal and 8730 Regen over 6secs. For damage reference, my spike trap full duration dmg is 9627, bonfire 8974.

What I am considering
Carrion Power, Vitality, Condition
This has me up to 24,992 hitpoints(1000 toughness). My healing spring is 4920, 4680regen over 6 secs. ( 5k less healing than settler). For damage reference, my spike trap full duration damage is 11,998 and bonfire 10,305.

Ultimately it comes down to whats better?
toughness/healing vs more physical dmg, more hitpoints and more condi damage

Honestly, I’m still playing this trapper ranger and I just can’t get over how annoying it is to have to stand inside players bodies to get these stupid things off. I’m so sick of Anet balancing the game without thinking about what’s actually fun. Throwing traps was fun. You threw them into the area you wanted to fight, then jumped in with them for a fun condi arena.

I don’t get this comment. You don’t have to stand inside the players bodies. They are not like that. Traps are used to herd, guide, kite, the enemy into. Not on top of… You and your team know where they are. They are to prevent, and alert, and reset the fight, “as well as” damage.

They are not grenades, nets, or boomerangs. You place them and then dance. I run 4 and enjoy spike trap the most.

Trapper ranger can’t be played like this, though. Most classes can get you below 50% before they even get within range to trigger a trap, and with the sacrificed defenses to even slot traps you’re forced to get your traps on your opponent to basically burst them down before they can burst you down. Trapper rangers can’t afford waiting around for opponents to walk on their traps.

So now, in a scenario where the trapper is forced to walk over to an enemy player, they also have to spend 1.5 seconds literally dancing around them to finally get traps activated. At this point the trapper just hopes that the enemy player sits in the traps long enough to make all the effort worth it, which in most cases isn’t worth it. Trying to get on a power ranger with a trapper ranger for example is an absolute nightmare.

It’s not easy and sometimes it’s not possible but the times I have been able to do it I use the evades from sword three and dagger four to squirrel my way closer to the ranger until I am within range of an entangle…if they get rooted and don’t get away quick, well you know the rest.

OP-I fully understand where you are coming from. This last week I played the hell out of a condi trapper build. I solo qued, duo qued and ran full 5 with friends in Rated.

Sometimes it was amazing, sometimes it just sucked. Being a one man condi bomb is amazing. Having one heal and zero utilities makes the trapper soft. The trapper is slow moving and doesn’t have stealth, blocks or immunes.

Having to drop the traps in a big fight is where I am MOST valuable and it is also where I am most vulnerable. It eems like a conflicted proposition.
Necros can do this and still tank the kitten out of people.

The more organized/meta the group we are fighting is, the more weaknesses the trapper showed. I really saw this to be true when I played my EU account, where our EU GW2 brethren love the crap out of the holy cheese that is the META.

After looking at the meta, I really think ranger is missing something that other classes that fill the meta have. We don’t have the tankiness, the stealth, the heals, the immunes, the movement effects and the cd on spike trap is too long.

Can’t use the runes in sPvP so that leaves WvW/PvE.

People like them the way they are now just as much as people hate them. Just adapt or don’t use them. We don’t need them to be kits, weapons, or anything else.

Nobody is talking about runes and no one is talking about WvW.

Ok I just never see any other ranger in WvW with so much swiftness. I’ve seen like up to 30 sec stacks and all, but a constant 2 min upkeep was making me scratch my head.

It doesn’t really matter if he had 3 hours of swiftness, you get that right?

Just with one trait point change I can have permanent swiftness with a shout. I have to constantly renew it but I can constantly renew it endlessly.

This is the build I feel fits the current meta. It has worked wonders with my team so far in the AG tournaments and other teams began playing the build I am using aswell after winning week after week. With the traits set up you can easily go from Marauder or Zerker and still be tanky while doing great damage.

Having good success with this build.

I’ve played it before in wvw, but not much in spvp.

The range. I know its always been there, but it’s not as helpful imho in wvw as it is in pvp.

The icing on the cake is the quickening zephyr. I always thought of it as being greedy.
Like, LB already pew pews but now I can do it faster?

But I’ve seen the light, quickness stomp is amazing!

I technically run my variation of Rabid survival (using spike trap).

About fitting the meta – anything is meta if it fulfills it’s purpose.
Roles you need for the team:

~ Bunker
~ Balanced Fighter
~ Decapper

~ Roamer (+1 oriented with mobility, bursty)
~ Supporter point-fighter
~ Duelist

If your build deals AoE damage so high that it beats most 1v1 builds and offers CC and mobility – that’s all you really need for meta.

These are the two builds I have spent the most time with, at least in PvP. I stayed away from LB because I thought it wasn’t ideal (noob weapon etc etc)
Maybe I was wrong.

First build, full condi trapper. Lot of fun, condi burst. Healing spring is great because it removes all condis and helps team mates. No defense against ranged opponents, no stab, and slow movement speed make it less than ideal. I don’t think it fits into any of the roles that Tragic mentioned. It;s good 1v1 but it doesn’t have good movement.

The second condi bunker. No traps. sw/torch Axe/Dagger. I have mixed feelings about this. It has performed really well and at times all the survivability hasn’t done anything. Is this just a kitten Guard.

You either defeat your opponent with a build that sacrificed dmg/defense/CC/utility in order to get movement, or you begin to lose and escape the poor try-harder. And you can come again with full HP a new set of cooldowns able to do it again trying until you manage to beat him.

Is that really how you play?

Fighting decent engis in spvp is painful. You hit hard, you live a long time, you go immune to my condis.

I think if the same amount of people played Engi, that play cele eles, you’d get more notice.

Immune to conditions? Are you sure you’re not thinking of Revenant? Engineers are weak against conditions, painfully so. If Self-Regulating Defenses kicks in when you have ~3+ stacks of burning on you, you’re one dead engineer.

The things that Engineers tend to have are ways to prevent incoming attacks and a lot of cc and burst. And yes, that can be rather difficult to fight against.

It was really well timed elixirs.

And yeah, I know the class isn’t easy to play. I tried, had an 80 engi. Deleted.

I think seriously, much of the downside is the spec/class I play. When is Ranger ever meta in spvp? That’s one thing.

When I made this post I made a trap ranger which is high dmg, low survivability. There is a condi remove (all) on a my heal.
No stability.

Its just weapon skills, the heal and a kitten load of traps.

As for your “WOAH OK”. I can say whatever I like. Nothing is off limits. I didn’t say anything abusive. In my opinion, they seem understaffed. I didn’t say they are bad, evil people but there does seem to be a fair amount of contention in the company. They wouldn’t be the only company that had that problem.

It’s not a particularly well run company. They set a business model that I like, but it does hamper them somewhat.

If they are behind nda’s to not talk to the community =its not a well run company.

People wonder why they dont talk to us, why the almost refuse to communicate, I took my shot.

Nothing, and I mean not a kitten thing stops Arenanet from coming in here and having a little heart to heart with us to make us feel better. Do they? No.

If this company wants to do everything so different from the rest of the mmo community, they can start by doing it somewhere it actually counts, by being really upfront and honest with the people who play the game.

I love gw2. Great game that I have played steadily for 2+ yrs.

But, no, I don’t think they will ever be good communicators or code fixers. They try to fix one bug and create 4 more problems

The devs have asked for Feedback occasionally and then they don’t fix anything. I think its a combination of employees being overworked and the fixes we want not being at the top of their growing list of tasks.

Last thing, go read reviews about ANET on Glassdoor. I don’t think it’s a good company to work for.

I’m sure part of it is skill and my build (trap ranger) Occasionally I run into someone that tears me up. It’s spvp, it’s not always 1v1. When I did get the edge, the engi had an engi fraynd. Talk about payn… ow ow ow.

Oh and the cele meta doesn’t hurt.
