‘The meta’ , better known as the popularity contest or the court of popular opinion.
We need to go to ANET HQ and demand this.
You agree with me fellow warriors, right ?
P.S. hope you get my point of this thread < put flame shield anyway:)
Why is this a question and no. Having been around since closed beta days and using longbow throughout most of the time, I have seen it go from utterly terrible but still fun, to being brought to overpowered, and them readjusted to be balanced. Longbow is fine as it is. You want to remove longbow and have rifle be our only means of ranged combat? Rifle would need a complete overhaul because it is in a miserable state.
Give a suggestion for replacement or suggestion for fix instead of filling the forum with more garbage posts.
Its zo OPz.
but nvm Anet can delete Rifle too.
that escalated quickly
Good point SpellOfInitquity.
Making use of Hunter’s Shot giving stealth to setup some burst from OH Axe and/or Sword is another favorite for others to look out for.
Example: Longbow Hunter’s Shot (Stealth) -> Swap Greatsword with Sigil of Intelligence -> Maul from stealth.
If their stunbreakers are on cooldown, Hilt Bash into Maul is even meaner. I’ve actually never done a Path of Scars from stealth … will have to try now that I think about it :-)
see now ya got me thinking, what does more dmg?
path of scars from stealth + whatever weapon you choose to combine that with
or greatsword bash, maul and auto attack (if I can I am throwing my whole bar at them, especially if they are very mobile, 4 and snare them)

This is what i currently use since i figured that i most likely won’t get 1v1’s while roaming anymore. i figured i wouldn’t really need RtW and EE just because the amount of time you spend on that range, especially when you get into a 1v2, is so little that it’s just not worth spending 6 Points in MM for me.
You can definetly use GS instead of SD, but for me, just too many heals of the Defender runes were wasted to a GS block so i went back to sd.
Defender runes work when you block, but you have no way to block.
Am I missing something?
I’ve ran three builds since playing ranger, the typical lb/gs build being one of them. It was fun, but way too soft. Felt like a one trick pony.
Then I see in a post, (that I cannot find again), how some of you are running LB builds without any marks traits.
Have any of you had success with this in WvW?
Care to post the build your using?
Thanks Chaotic , Tim, OMG and Henrik
-Chaotic, Just a couple things going against me. One, I’m super new to ele so I would want to start something easier at first and move into harder builds. 2, you guys can’t help this one, my ping is just horrible at times, I’m doing good if its in the 200s-300s, regularly its 6 times that. So playing the softest class with the softest build with some bad internet just really screws me over.
Would a D/D build be an easier beginner build?
Would I be tougher? Harder to kill? So far, the hardest thing I am finding is that I am so so soft. Ridiculously soft. A npc hits me for 1/5th of my health just running by.
I leveled crafting just so I could craft ascended celestial gear. And you don’t use it.
I want to take camps solo. When you solo, do you do that?
Hello ELE forums. Looking for some good advice.
I have had an 80 ele for a while now, just haven’t done much with him.
After waching aeroplanejellys Yolo vid, it inspired me to give it another try.
I am looking for a tried and true D/D or S/D build for WvW.
Can anyone tell me why someone would choose Focus over dagger in a S/ build?
I look at the skills on focus and I just don’t get it.
Thanks
-Bast
Sactual thinks they are skilled players when using that, It’s really sad and quite laughable.
I think it’s funny how many people in GW2 talk about peoples ‘skill’ and thinking their good.
I don’t play thief. If I did, I’ll play whatever build I D@ mn well please. I don’t care if its what people call aids, or cheese. Don’t like my build, counter me.
Do people think their good in WvW when they use a zerg to chase across the map? Or kill you with 5 people? They just want to kill you. They don’t pat themselves on the back.
When I kill someone, I don’t think I am good, or “I play a cheese build, I didn’t deserve that.” I just think “I killed that person, yay me.” You guys complicate kitten too much.
I don’t remember anyone, in any other mmo I’ve played (13yrs of mmos) not using a build because it was too strong.

My biggest issue, how to go from the defensive to the offensive and turn the fight in my favor.
Maybe Im just bad lol
Maybe I am running an optimal spec.
So I decided to simplify it and switch to a 2 kit + rocket boot spec (Koroshi)
Changing out my runes, sigils and going full rabid.
I am wondering if I am running an optimal spec.
I am having some overall issues with the playstyle.
One, its very counterplay-ish. Everything depending on what my opponent does.
There are so many buttons to push it reminds me of stance dancing warriors of WoW and I wonder if a programmable mouse/keyboard could alleviate some of that trouble.
Oh yeah, stuns/dazes, screw me over.
Any advice to my spec/gear/play is welcome.

Nice post.
I don’t think thieves are anywhere close to being OP.
Haven’t seen much thief hate lately. I guess it still exists because players can always find something to complain about.
Compared to other mmo’s stealthing classes, Thieves ‘stealth’ sucks. Shadowbane stealth, better. DAOC’s stealthers had better stealth. WoW’s Rogues had better stealth and more consistent ways to get back into stealth.
Now, Gw2 Thieves mobility is unreal, but their stealth being op? Naw.
Even with a build that uses stealth to its limits, the condi aids build p/d— it still requires skill and timing to continuously get back into stealth and even then, that build has some serious drawbacks.
For one, it has 60s CD default.
Second, it can be traited to grant fury, cleanse conditions and have shorter cooldown, which makes rune effects proc often. Entangle can often be used at least 2 times in a fight, or 3 if you use it early. Most of the other elite skills (in the game) can’t do as much.
This sentiment that every class can’t have an advantage….
Who gives a kitten if other classes elites can’t do as much. The other classes aren’t rangers.
They are never going to make things ‘fair’. It’s an mmo played on Pc’s.
It’s not fair and it never will be.
Whether a class gets buffed or nerfed should 1-be based on the class mechanics (does it make sense) and 2-Will it be game breaking?
Probably the longbow of death. Few things end a fight faster than zerk spec rapid fire against someone already under pressure. Ranger is a hard add to compensate for.
This ^ Can any class add this much bursty damage from range?
With the push of one button, I can drop anywhere between 6500-11k dmg.
It’s nice to come into a fight just a little late, 3/4’s of my targets are at half health.
Shooting fish in a barrel at that point.
I still refuse to buy into the ‘stigma’ argument. To believe a class stigma would have a lasting real impact on how a guild recruited and ran an organized event just doesn’t hold up in my opinion.
There are some very ‘famous’ guilds playing (played) this game at a very competitive level in WvW/GvG/Guild Groups with players that are more than capable of judging a class’s worth without investing hundreds/thousands of hours into the class to figure out every nuance for themselves. In 2.5 years, they’ve never budged on their opinion of the class. The damage/utility/support/sustain is simply not something they’ve found useful. It’s more than just a stigma.
Take WoW for example. Everyone has heard the term Huntard. It was coined practically on day 1. I was a Hunter in a highly regarded raiding guild and got invited to 100% of raids during my entire lifetime with the guild. Now if I were the only Hunter in the guild I’d agree with you that player skill was the deciding factor and the huntard stigma was a reality. But I wasn’t, we routinely brought 3 to 5 Hunters. Contrast this to Warlocks which never had this stigma (only 3 very entertaining videos about how bad they were) and my brother never got invited to raids because Warlocks were awful for the first year or so of WoWs release (needed one for CoE and a guild officer’s girlfriend was a Warlock).
Our guild leader only ever played a Thief (and eventually a Paladin as we were Horde). We were a cutting edge guild that couldn’t wait for other guilds to build statistics, addons, and walkthroughs for content before we could progress. But somehow my guild leader in WoW could judge a class he never played patch after patch accurately to determine if they should be brought to a raid but in 2.5 years no single commander found a use for a Ranger in anything but sPvP? And even there it was more thanks to a condi/AI meta?
Just doesn’t make sense imo. It’s easier for me to believe the class has problems.
ps. I realize this is a PvE to PvP argument. I’d give a PvP to PvP argument but apparently I’m the only player willing to admit to playing Shadowbane for 2 years so no one would understand the reference.
I played Shadowbane. It was my first mmo and I didn’t last 2 years!
Speaking to your point, it’s really hard for me personally to go with the flow.
But it has been 2+ years…. you would think that if something were worth doing, it would of been tried by now.
I’d like to see a full Non GWEN comp that works. I bet it’s possible.
Thief Ranger Engi Mesmer TREM Ftw!! Now that would be an epic video.
I laugh at anyone who says their guild ‘let’ them.

Interesting choice on the lynx and I appreciate the suggestions.
What gear would you use for WvW?
Apothecary is the equivelent of settler’s amulet. Toughness, condition damage and healing power. The sustain gained outweighs the small loss of condition damage, imo.
My only real concern is a lack of constant run speed. There are just too many good utilities for the ranger. I guess I could always swap them in and out depending on my needs. —OR swap them pre-fight.
Traveler runes work really well for movement speed so you don’t need to drop any utilities. Even gives a bit of +condition duration that works on all of your conditions unlike krait runes which focus on bleeding only, and boon duration to increase your regen uptime.
Well that gives me something to think about.
It’s going to take me a little bit of time to get all the gear together.
I can make up my mind then.
Thanks
This is something I’ve been using in PvP. Easy enough to use in WvW too.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQRAsY3fjMq0yaHL2sQ1aABhaVA0uGu3u29QcDf9JrIVsA-TJhHwAPLDI4kAge/BAPBAA
- Oakheart Salve, Rejuvanation and Healing Spring cover for perma regen
- Survival of the Fittest and Healing Spring for condi removal, EB can be used too for even more removal if needed
- Keen Edge works well with survival traits (cooldown and SotF)
- Traveler runes have movement speed and a bit of boon/condi duration
- Geomancy and Hydromancy sigils for on swap conditions
- Lynx for more bleeds, Wolf for fear
I chose settler’s amulet for the healing power. If I were going to change my runes to krait, I would use a rabid amulet instead and put 2 points into Skirmishing picking up Sharpened Edges and Tail Wind for the swiftness on swap.
Incredible survivability both between the regen and condition removal. The amount of condition pressure you can put out is really good. It can be tweaked several different ways to meet your needs. Try preloading sharpening stones (30s to use) and using axe 2 for 10 bleed stacks.
Interesting choice on the lynx and I appreciate the suggestions.
What gear would you use for WvW?
Thanks for the beastmastery build.
One of my rangers runs something close to this http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNQQRAsf3YnEqQvgWxCusAVLGQQoWFAtrhktFcPE3wPfyKSEL-T1SAABK8AAMS9nAOBAAcEAETZwN6HsUJIZKt44gAMmSke2fgUALqsC-w
Mix and match the armor and trinkets until you get the stats you like but you get a nice burst from dropping burning, entangle, swapping to a/d for doom sigil to extend poison then the bleeds from crippling talon, split blade and keen edge trait and then hit them with winter’s bite for chill.
That should give them 19 stacks of bleeding, burning, poison, torment, immobilize and chill on the first rotation also the bird should be hitting them pretty hard at the same time and adding blind for 1 more cover condition.
So, three people posted builds. Congrats, yours made the most sense.
It seemed to be the best dmg/survivability combonation.
Krait >Running with water/dwayna runes. It seems like it already has a lot survivability and more in a group would just be overkill. I am not trying to be the group healer and it’s a big loss of condi dmg.
My only real concern is a lack of constant run speed. There are just too many good utilities for the ranger. I guess I could always swap them in and out depending on my needs. —OR swap them pre-fight.
What would you swap instead of sigil of corruption. I don’t like stacking just so I can fight. What would be the next best bet?
I know there are a lot of these builds.
I am attempting to compensate for my bad connection.
I’d like to end up with something that spikes condi dmg, and that is more passive survival than my current lb/gs.
I’ll be roaming solo or small group.
Gear isn’t cheap and I’d like to do this right the first time
Thanks in advance

Enjoyed the vid.
It definitely gave me some ideas
I was having trouble taking camps as d/p.
Ty for suggestions. Took, sword pistol—and no problem.
All the blinds, no positional requirements, and no set up needed compared to d/p
And it might be slower but I always take out both guards first.
My bad. In any case, you need condi removal. “Oh, but ill just play smart and dodge/blind the conditions”. It doesn’t work that way, at least in WvW. Trust me, 20606 dp is probably the best 1v1/1vx build in the game. I have been roaming with this build for almost 4 months now, and have lost only one 1v1 against a condi burst warr, while also winning too numerous to count 1v1s, 1v2s, 1v3s, even a few 1v4s. You can barely 1v1 with 26006, let alone 1vX. WvW is just too different from spvp
Why don’t more builds use traveler runes or signet of shadows?
I would think that either would be a must have for WvW.
Solo, havoc and zvz.
On my longbow I have the air and fire sigil, would another 8 percent crit make a world of difference to those proccing? It feels like they proc often enough now.
Would the extra healing and health of the second build fair better in solo roaming with much less toughness.
(edited by EnderzShadow.2506)
I’m curious to know from a veterans point of view, what the difference between these two builds are in terms of gear/and traits and how the advantages will play out in WvW.
The following build is the one that I am running
http://intothemists.com/guides/4717-koroshi_roaming_sniper
6 5 3 Power Ranger. I’m using great sword for now. It has better recharge on signets, about 800 more toughness due to 3 pieces of knights gear and knights ascended trinkets.
The next build is a guild recommended build from a friend of mine. Looks solid. Biggest difference I see other than pets, is a extra regen and assassins gear which add’s more crit. It is also much lighter on toughness.
The koroshi build looks more solo specific and the other build looks to be more for raiding in WvW.
I’ve seen this too many times before.
A player get’s mad at a particular class and decides to roll one in spvp and they confirm that the class is OP and call for a nerf.
I don’t believe you have an 80 mesmer.
Otherwise I do believe you are being sincereYou need to learn how to fight them or ignore them.
i have a lv 15 mesmer…with 3500+ tournaments on it…you don’t need pve levels, we’re talking about fighting ppl in tpvp not mobs or wvsw zergs full of headless chickens xD
And dunno if you’re talking about PU or some other pve crap like that …but ignoring shatter mesmers is actually the fastest way to get wiped in teamfights…
Reading comprehension is vital if you are going to continue to post on these forums.
But hey, since you like to cherry pick one sentence out of a couple paragraphs, I can do the same.
Since when is PU a pve spec?

Hamster, looked at your build link. Superior sigil of chilling on Gs?
Does that work with the thief that would be running venomshare?
To be fair, I know some people who love that spec.
I call them sadists.
I’ll be honest, I love it too. It’s quite fun to play and I wish it were viable…but it’s not. It’s just horrid.
I got bored and tried it too. And to be fair, I wanted it to work—the idea sounds cool and it was fun. But, it reminded me of condi pu minus the strengths.
To be fair, I know some people who love that spec.

ty /bow
yeah I know, it was late…about 3am and my mind went silly
Since the Mesmer is pretty much an amalgamation of every profession in the game (see: Jack of all Trades, Master of None), it’s easy to say that we can do anything anyone else does. Doing it better, of course, is where it becomes painfully hard.
Maybe the ghost can come up with some ‘Brilliant Mind’ type equation that will certifiably rectify and quantify the magnitude of our magnanimous propensity for troop contribution. Cmon Fay, bust out the chalkboard and theoretical physics
Honestly, I have two conflicting lines of thought on this matter.
One is pretty straight forward. I think you are all wrong. You can’t see the value a mesmer brings to a group because it isn’t obvious and you’re too obtuse to recognize it. Min maxers tend to exagerate the obvious and diminish the subtle.
Two, maybe I’m completely wrong and showing blatant bias and favoritism to the class I play.
/shrug
I don’t think it’s nearly as ineffective as people like go on about. It’s a great option as a mesmer to tag a bunch of people and I couldn’t give a **** if people think there are more ‘effective’ options via other classes. I’m not playing other classes. I’m playing the mesmer.
Everyone wants to min max to each class.
I like to think of it in terms of, what other class provides so many opportunities for chaos armor, portal bombing, stealth and reflects? Oh that’s right, none.
Welcome Ranger Thank you for posting.
Take the ghost lightly as he is bitter.
The brightside is, you know you need to rethink some things.
If you even get close to ‘glamour’, just like Rodney Dangerfield, you will get no respect.
Thanks for the builds Swish. I will promptly google what PU means and maybe give that a shot, haha. I’m also considering the shatter build Vash posted, but it looks like it might be too advanced for where I am right now. So much has changed that I feel like I might need a more basic build to help get me caught up.
If you are interested in playing your previous build, can you describe it to us?
I roamed with another shatter mesmer last night, we both used GS/sw+t, that was really fun, you can take on large groups with two mesmers. The ahaaa-moment for me with shattering was when I realised how important positioning and controlling the fight is. Keys to controll are, CC and aggression, just unleash all you got (almost) and then disapear, then back in. When you’re aggressive and force them to defensive play you’ve won. For the disengage part, traited blink and ileap is fantastic. See youself as a needle, sting people and gtfo, dont slash and whirl around, you’ll break.
Before I start roamin I always warm up with some different shatters on the mobs near the spawn and try different rotations.
^^^YES^^^ I know I can get better but for the sake of enjoying the game, I just go balls out, jump in, lay people out as best I can, chaining attacks and shatters and then I bounce!
I try to play as aggresively as possible, just not thinking about it—and find a unique position to place myself after the attack usually with a good blink. After the attack, I try to get in their blind spot and I rinse and repeat my mesmers fury unto them yaks bend rage bait turtling kooks
The following, I just ignore
-My connection can really suck at times.
-I dont get to see everything I do, I have to trust that it happens
-I may not have the perfect runes or sigils, boo hoo me
-I probably dont have the PERFECT food
-I know I dont have stacks, cause preparing to have fun, is not having fun.
^I ignore all that min maxing bull and just play. When I have time and I’m tired, I can mess around wtih stats/gear/food and sigils
For now, I am having a BLAST!
If your power based, other bursty specs are fun to run with. Power rangers melt things, provide a little more utility and dmg— and it’s a blast
I’d be happy to run a dungeon once in a while if someone would explain what was going on
I never was a big fan of solo roaming (I play MMOs because of the social component mostly), but during the season it’s really hard to find any roamers, at least where I’m playing right now… and, yeah, I agree with Doiid… all the cheese.
It’s not that I want to ‘solo’ roam because I’m anti social. Roaming alone is convenient. I don’t know anyone that knows 4 people who will just drop what they are doing and group up at a moments notice.

*When people are in groups, they are too confident. If I am running towards a group of 3-6, they don’t always use defensive skills…..many times, they used NONE.
*In the open, it’s tough to lock someone down to apply ALL my possible damage. Many Run, or try to bait me into uneven fights—-and in open field, d/p thieves ugh.
The video that vash put up is great for showing combos—-using those combos in real situations where classes are immune to damage, dodging, blocking, friends come to help gank the mes———well $ ** just got real
6 more days I’m forcing myself to play Shatter-
One last thing.. with my internet connection the way it is, I can’t count on what I’m seeing.
After watching Vashury’s amazing shatter vid, I’m giving shatter another shot.
Going to give it a week…even if it kills me. Most of my WvW is solo or small group roaming.
Would you do anything differently than he did for WvW. Gear/Talents/Sigils
4- What type of WvW do you see yourself doing? Solo roaming, Havoc Groups, organized guild zerg?
There are mesmer builds that are ideal for each circumstance.
But that can be said for any class in game—they all have builds that highlight their strengths in certain environments.
There are so many ways to play a mesmer and that’s why you are going to see many people tell you “Whatever is fun”.
Seriously…Anet’s genius and creativity to produce weird mechanics is FA BU LOUS.
This needs a standing ovation and must be stored in the best of repository of game design.I am wondering if they did not apply this “projectile change” to other blink like skills:
- mesmer sword 3 ? => did someobe tested it on a reflected area ?
- mesmer blink ?
thief steal => would’nt it explain some issue they are facing nowadays?
- ele ?
- portal ?
^Thief bugs. I wondered the same thing. I’m not even sure I want to play my thief now as it is such a precise class—relatively soft and then the steal/heartseeker bugged.
I know most mesmers won’t shed a tear. Personally, I’d rather every class be bug free than this attitude we see of “haha, your class is bugged, how do you like it?”
(edited by EnderzShadow.2506)
I love the ranger buffs. Feedback and focus trait are incredibly strong against them. They melt themselves.
Whut???
Probably reflects are strong against newbie ranger, but not against half-decent one. Just cancel Rapid Fire (through evade, character turn, stow). And repeat RF after 10 sec (while your reflect on CD). Tested longbow ranger at eotm – not feedback, nor reflecting wall (guardian skill) does help. This new trend to slot reflect as solution of ranger problem only makes me smile. Just stop fire and wait or relocate my ranger. As far as i see now – biggest contributor to def against rangers is LOS. Organized party of rangers can be very dangerous.
Seems it is ltl against one of main principles of game – melee fight is more dangerous, but more rewarding then safer range fight.
You said it—nub rangers. I come across many of those In WvW.
Longbow rangers are typically soft. They might hit really hard, but they can’t hit what they can’t see.
So yeah los, getting mixed in the crowd of phantasms, other players, using a stealth to get behind them or get right on them—all that has worked well for me.
tradepsot shows whats wrong with arneanet
people ask just for an simple armor filter for 2 years
but arenanet has to overhaul the complete thing and make it even worse
The armor filter was all I wanted. I agree with this wholeheartedly.
The same motto is taken into the “balancing” of classes. I understand they want to make more money via the gem store, it’s a business. They could of done that without completely revamping the thing.
My issue with the gemstore is simple, I think it’s far to easy to buy multiple items you did not intend to buy.
-When I buy, I am automatically forced to have a bid item checked by
default.
-If you want to buy now you have to click on the other side, to buy now.
With VERY little effort I can accidentally buy 3, 10, 20 of something, and
the auction house is glad to take every bit of the money I DO have,
even if you cant buy the whole order. <—That wasn’t possible the way it
used to be. Not like it is now.
I also noticed that the symbol that is showing that you have something ‘checked’ to buy, looks like a maximize/minimize symbol on Folders in Windows. It is not clearly a ‘checked box’ like it used to be.
This was pointed out recently after the patch by Fay with a few other bugs
1 Clones no longer have offhand weapons
2 Harmonious mantras will just randomly cause your mantras to lose charges for no apparent reason. One reliable repro is to equip it, charge them, then get downleveled.
3 iWarden no longer works with phantasmal haste
4 iWarden still has a tendency to wander off and attack the wrong target
5 iWarden has a longer pause time before attacking, and results in often just chasing targets around and never attacking
6 Far reaching manipulations doesn’t increase the range of mimic
7 iLeap will still occasionally go on cooldown without working if used at maximum range
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Patch-Bugs-Compliation/first#post4417028
Lot of talk how hard it is vs multiple rangers and I can imagine. But they are even more effective if they call targets and you assist them in dmg/CC and heals.
I played with one last night and although he went down a few times, he hit like a truck and put 20-25 stacks of vulnerability on targets (if they lived that long)
If I had played a heavy CC spec, it would of been absolutely brutal.
