Hey sorry, no i’m not online right now and won’t be till later today.

@brother. Yes, but even those builds you mention still can contribute something. The other notrious build that you may be eluding too would be a staff/scepter camping guardian. They still provide some healing and aegis, along with some dps, even though it’s lazy.

The difference is the Guardian CAN have amazing builds. The ranger can have some mediocore builds, and that’s only if you’re really good.

I did mention that rangers can excel in spvp. So if that’s what you’re getting at, I already agreed.

The nice thing about the game is you are rewarded with exp while doing just about anything. As mentioned, hit a new starter level and ‘map complete’ that zone… all points of interest, hearts, waypoints and vistas. Kill everything you encounter and harvest all nodes. You’ll hit your share of events in the process. You’ll jump your 4 levels quickly, and then can continue your story if that’s what interests you.

If you have the patience for some monotony, you can always join the ‘Champ Train’ in Queensdale… the group continuously loops a run that takes out half a dozen champion level monsters in succession. It gets tedious, but certainly a quick way to level, and the rewards are decent as well. Ask for the ‘zerg location’ in map chat and join the slaughter.

thanks (: i will try to find this, the map/world so big and idk what everythign means ( icons )

Queensdale is the human start zone, south of divinity’ reach (the human starter city). You’ll want to run around and get most of the WPs (waypoints) before joining the champ train, as they WP to most of the spots.

POIs (point of interests) are little squares that turn yellow when you discover them
Vistas are the red triangles that fill in red when you press f on the spot (usually in a high or low spot, as it’s a visual thing)
Hearts are the ‘quests’ area
Waypoints (WPs) are the blue diamonds that unlock and you can then instantly travel to that location.
Skill challenges are the blue up arrow that, once you complete, gives you one skill point to use on skills (or recipes in the future, for now, just focus on skills)

Skill challenges will either be 1) fighting something 2) Answering questions 3) Picking something up and using it in your inventory

My best tip for leveling up is, if you are doing a heart and you can start an event (an NPC with a yellow circle of his/her head) or there is one going on, do it. It will almost always give you credit towards the heart, and you’ll get the xp for the event as well.

What time zone do you play? You may need to change servers in order to find the right area for you. For instance, SoS is the designated oceanic server. Also, tier 1 servers usually have 24/7 coverage.

Definitely find an active/large guild. Most organized guilds have event nights (wvw, pvp, dungeons, etc) and you can usually find a couple of people to help level, farm, whatever.

1) Dungeons/fotm
2) Farming bosses/champs
3) Dailies
4) WvW

Ogre Whistle or FE Powder?

in Players Helping Players

Ethics.4519

They are pretty cheap, you could always try them out.

If they didn’t change it, I believe it was FE first, then whistle. The elemental can survive underwater, where the ogre pet won’t.

Again, if they didn’t change it, they stay the level in the area you created them. So if you just got into a 20-30 zone. You can use them at level 30, then run back to the level 20 area.

I deleted alts when my slots are full and I wanna make a new toon. Currently they are all full, but I’m not making anymore (already at 8 )

Sounds like a warrior. Run PVT CC in wvw, and zerk in PvE.

Guardian would also be plausible. You can go full zerker for some good damage (not quite as much as warrior) but have utilities and a weapon swamp for all the regen/aegis and blocks/invulns

We had to kick two people yesterday because they wouldn’t stop insulting one of the other party members and just being kitten in general. We let it slide for most of the fractal, but when we got near jade maw they got worse and started to really lay it on.

I don’t think they noticed 3 of us were in the same guild?

So yeah, sometimes kicking is pretty deserved.

Completely agree. I’ve been on the kicking end a couple of times.

On the reverse side, I was pugging fotm and getting a little lippy with a guy who was wasting time. I realized 3 of them all had the same tag, and immediately started complimenting them and saying how well we were doing. I didn’t get kicked ;-)

Level 12 is a good time to start over. Just make a new toon and see how it plays. I’m not going to tell you to switch classes, especially since some people really enjoy ranger. I’m just saying maybe think about it now, before you invest too much time/money into a toon that you find out nobody wants to bring to dungeons/parties.

My first toon was a ranger that I max leveled and geared out, I have all professions (6 of them 80) and ranger is hands down my least favorite.

Keep in mind that Vitality also improves your energy regeneration for dodging…..something that should become VERY important to a Thief at higher levels.

Where did you get that from?
The Acrobatics trait line adds vitality and there are traits that help with endurance regeneration but that is not the same as vitality improving endurance regeneration.

Agreed, that’s bad information to spread.

Vitality gives you more health to deal with conditions, as they hit for a set amount, regardless of toughness. Toughness helps against pure hits/crits as this factors into the calculations.

Rangers are notorious for drawing in bad players. There’s a term that floats on the forums as “wrongbow” or “bearbow” which is a ranger that has a long bow with a bear pet. This is the least amount of damage but maximum safety. There are some very good rangers, but they tend to use sword/GS and stay in melee range (however the sword has a weird root on the auto chain since day 1 and has yet to be fixed)

Rangers tend to provide little to group comps, that aren’t better provided by a different class. If you want utility, bring a mesmer. If you want support/damage break a guardian, if you want all damage bring a warrior. Eles and thieves also provide some niche utilities and damage.

Rangers offer spirits and that’s about it. The damage is mediocre at best and spirits die quickly. The healing spring is nice if a thief can blast it with sbow for group heals, however most wrongbow rangers use the healing spring 1500 away from where the rest of the group is meleeing and stacked.

Edit: also depends on what you will be focusing on game wise. If you like dungeons/PvE I HIGHLY suggest not rolling a ranger. If you stick to WvW a lot, rangers are okay. If you spvp, rangers are actually decent for off-point capping/holding.

The last disclaimer is that you can only do the highest fractal level that your group can do. If you are level 2 and somebody in your group is 48, you can do 48. If you’re level 2 and the next highest in your group is 6, you can only do 6 or less.

I always want to know. If I’m the person with highest fractal level, but someone else start the instance, can I change character or leave mid-run? I never experiment with that. Sometimes my guildies group want to do even level to level up and get chest but the highest person is on odd fractal level. If I can join, let them start the instance, then leave for someone else, that would be handy.

The person who starts the run cannot leave. Anybody can start the dungeon at any level, as long as that person with the highest level is in the map (aka, doesn’t work across servers or overflows).

So lets say you’re level 28 and there’s a level 37 in your group, in LA on your server. You can start the level 36, and that person can change characters, log out, leave etc. However you can not change characters. You can log out, but the second you change your characters or leave the party , the instance is destroyed and the party is kicked.

Edit: I reread what you said. Yes, just be in LA at the time in their map, and they will be able to join. You can then leave party and they can add somebody else. It’s fine if they are say, level 35, and you start a lvl 38 for them. However, if you start a 38 and they are level 28, they will only get lvl 28 rewards (not 38). They will still level up to 29 though.

At a lower level don’t worry too much about it. I always go with power, just to kill quicker. If you’re worried about dying, go with toughness or vitality.

For a new player, doing hearts and the events is the best way to level, along with story.

Depending on your race, you started in a certain beginner area (wayfarer=norn, caledon forest=sylvari, etc). There is a big purple circle on your map that will take you to lions arch, from your main town (hoelbrak=norn, the grove=sylvari, etc) which will allow you to get to the other starting areas to do those hearts (lvl 1-15). You’ll still get good XP, even if the heart is a little low for your level.

Add me in game if you need help and I’ll show you the portals.

Side-note: A lot of people hate rangers. They are the joke of Tyria. If you like to play it, great for you, but just be ready to live a hard life as a ranger.

Character Level: You automatically get leveled up to 80. However, your gear will still be your normal gear and the party will still see you at your character level. A lot of PUGs will refuse to run with non-80s. Even guild groups will prefer you to be 70+ so you can get rare gear and have a lot of your traits

Fotm Level: You have a personal reward level for fractals that starts at 0. Evey time you completely a fractal level at your level or higher, your level goes up. The mechanics of fights change after level 9, and 10+ starts to introduce agony.

Agony and Agony Resistance (AR): The higher the level of fotm you do, the higher your AR needs to be. Bosses start to have agony at lvl 10, which you can avoid sometimes. Jade Maw has two automatically (ccan’t dodge, avoid, etc) agony attacks that acts as a hard AR check. You get more AR by getting ascended items and upgrading them in the forge and/or adding +5 AR that you can get with fractal relics.

General Info: The rewards get better (arguably) as you go higher, but agony starts to hit more. For instance, you can get infused rings (means ascended + 5 AR built in) after level 26. However, if you have 0 AR, agony hits for 12% of your health every tick 10-19. Agony hits for 30% of your health every tick in 20-29. So you need more AR to progress to those higher rewards. 20 + you start to get fractal skins RNG in the daily chest. There is a daily chest for each time you defeat maw, once per level area. Those level ares is 0-9/10-19/20-29/30-39/etc. Which means you can do two 48s in one day, bu tyou will get one chest. You can do a 48 and a 38 in one day, and will get both chests.

The fractal is made up of 3 rounds. There’s swamp, cliffside, water, dredge, shaman, etc. It’s randomly 3 out of the choices. The maw is the 4th round, but only on even fractals. However, the maw is where you get the daily chest. So if you’re trying to level from say 5 to 6, and don’t care about rewards, it would be better to do a lvl 7 than a lvl 6.

The last disclaimer is that you can only do the highest fractal level that your group can do. If you are level 2 and somebody in your group is 48, you can do 48. If you’re level 2 and the next highest in your group is 6, you can only do 6 or less.

Edit/tl;dr: You can start fotm at any level, but it’s hard to find pugs to take non-80s. Fotm gives little experience because there aren’t as many events as there are in other dungeons.

Ranger or Warrior PVE

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Ethics.4519

Ethics.4519

Depends what PvE you want. Open world either one is okay. Dungoens/Fotm you DEFNITELY want warrior.

Don’t expect to range too much with a ranger. The range is good for wvw (backline DPS), but in pve you’ll most likely use GS or Sword. The ranger isn’t anything like GW1 ranger, so you might be disappointed.

If you’re going to PuG dungeons, 99% of pugs will be MUCH happier with you on warrior than ranger.

Edit: That’s about as nice as I can be towards rangers. It was my very first class (as I have a love for archers) and it has been nothing but a disappointment. The second I gave up on ranger and tried a mesmer, was the best decision of my life ;-)

Elementalist has vastly different playstyles depending on what weapon set you use.

Staff: Laid back and safe at range. Attacks are somewhat slow, but hard hitting. You can place your combo fields at the right time to set up your teammates with boons/auras.

Dagger/Dagger: Very fast pace. You’re in the mix of the action and you have to be on your toes. There’s a pretty scripted combo, but that can quickly get thrown at the window when something doesn’t go correctly. It’s a great for using line of sight around corners since your attacks are aoe and don’t require a target

Scepter/Dagger: My least experience with this weapon set. I believe it’s a mix between staff and D/D as it’s chaotic, but you’re at range so you have more time and a little more safety

Engineer. I love the engineer playstyle. It’s also pretty hectic and requires a lot of kit switching (just like the attuement switching on ele). However I notice less of an emphasis on combos and more of an emphasis on timing (against what your opponent will do). My only dislike comes into play that the grenades don’t have an autochain. It’s very easy to miss when you’re at range due to the slow travel speed.

Just going off of lore, I would say human thief and asuran engineer.

However I have an asuran thief and the animations are great. Like you already said, the engineer doesn’t seem to have a lot of combat animation so it would be lost on that.

The only other thing that comes to mind is that there’s an asuran retaliation skill. Most engineers tend to go bunker/conditions, and that would benefit an engineer a lot more than a thief, as you really try to avoid being hit on a thief, so retaliation is a lost. With that being said, I’m not sure how many asuran engineers actually use that skill.

The very very last thing that comes to mind…. asurans can hide behind their turrets?

My recommendation : Asuran thief, Human engineer.
(However maybe check out sylvari for either one of those)

Ranger sword = One of ranger’s best weapons. Roots you in place and can mess with your dodge, but has very good dodge/evades on the weapon, especially when combined with dagger.

Mesmer sword = One of mesmer’s best weapons. It does the most damage out of the other mesmer weapons. You won’t hit very hard, but it has a long evade (I miss the invuln) and a leap/immob that’s rather buggy. Sword/Sword on a mesmer is very good, and used by a lot mesmers. It also looks pretty kitten.

Warrior sword: Not the best weapon on the warrior, but not the worst. It’s good for pairing with warhorn if you want to move around quickly. It can deal a lot of bleeding, so if you wanted to run a condition warrior (?) it would be good for that.

Thief sword: Has an immobilize when used in stealth. It’s great for moving in and out of combat, and can be paired for a very dodgy/evading thief build.

I have little experience with the guard sword, but from what I hear it does very good damage.

IMO mesmer is the best. I’m biased as my main is a mesmer. But you pretty much have to use sword/offhand & sword/offhand if you want high damage in PvE.
