Your first link is a little confusing. Maybe you could just say “listed below” as I just thought the link wasn’t working since it was taking me to the bottom of the page. Good initiative though to help people out.

MF= Magic Find/Mystic Forge (confusing when there’s no context)
SP/SC = SkillPoint, Skill Challenge
BLTC = Black Lion Trading Company
BLSK = Black Lion Salvage Kit
FOTM = Feature of the Month. Not to be confused with FoTM
WvWvW/WvW/W3= World vs World vs World
sPvP = strategy player vs player (I think it’s strategy/strategical)
tPvP = tournament player vs player
HoTM = Heart of the Mists

Mounts? (what is classified as a mount)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ethics.4519

Ethics.4519

By pure definition a ‘mount’ is anything that you can, well, mount. As in you can get on it and/or ride it.

By MMORPG definition, usually a mount is accepted as something you can equip, ride or get in, and increase your speed/movement.

Anet will most likely never say “We will never have mounts”. It’s much easier to say something may happen as to saying it will never happen. What if 90% of the population wants mounts in a year, then that 10% that doesn’t will be kitten because they out right said they wouldn’t have mounts. If they don’t bring in mounts than that 90% will be upset that they aren’t bringing in mounts.

Quit reading into the situation so much. The post was in answer asking if the broom was a segue into putting mounts into the game. No, it’s not. Enough

Exactly what soulmyr said. Just pick your favorite that instant and play. If you don’t like it switch. Just play 2-3 at the same time and narrow it down that way.

I picked race based on what made sense for the class. If I’m a warrior I wanna be big and strong = norn/human. If I’m a thief I wanna be quick/tiny = asura or a ranger sylvari. Some people like irony so they will make a guardian asura or a thief charr.

On that note, I’m not a huge fan of asuras because 80% of this game is cosmetic and you can barely see armor/weapons on asurans

The distinction is that when I play, I want to play well, I don’t approach it as work. And there was no contradiction in what I said in the post; not even a ‘little bit’. Read it again. It had nothing to do with where players were on a skill or gear curve or why; simply the values they hold.

The contradiction is that you say the game should be played for fun, but you are forcing people to play the way you want to because it’s more efficient.

That is why I described the MF problem being a human one as opposed to a specifically game or technical one. Those who have a problem with MF are approaching it from a set of values they hold for themselves and would like to, ideally, see in others.

Lack of skill, lack of determination, lack of desire to obtain better results are all human based. It was civil but you intentionally skip over legitimate arguments and don’t even mention them. I feel like I have made some very good points so until those are addressed then I’m done. We both know that we aren’t going to convince each other one way or the other, but when you refuse to acknowledge a relevant point, that’s when the discussion dies.

If they were competitive gold sellers would leave the game eventually. If Anet made it so that gold sellers no longer made money, they would leave and go to a more profitable game. Or at least there would be less of them.

Yep, like Ilithis said. The more they get downed, the lower their health starts next time they are downed.

As for multiple situations, the best thing you can do, if you have skills/utilities, is either daze/knockdown/knockback the people reviving and just try to dps your target down.

Also you can try to mistform stomp/stealthstomp/hastestomp/stabilitystomp the person so their interrupts don’t work

Ethics.4519

I’m not hardcore, but I do pay attention to theorycrafting. It doesn’t make me an engineer, but it does benefit my play. Maybe it just describes different values and therefore the different values that we bring to group play. I would prefer to play with others who care about their contribution to the groups success. I actually don’t have a problem with the under-geared new 80 or a new player with a low skill level. I do have a problem with a player who does not want to contribute to the group at the level which he or she is capable of.

I deleted the golfing analogy because it’s not a team sport. Also I probably shouldn’t have made the basketball analogy because it’s no use discussing make believe stuff.

Your last statement contradicts the previous one a little bit. That new player with a low skill level could contribute more. They good read up on builds, they could go to the heart of the mists and fine toon the traits to be perfectly in sync with their gear/playstyle. That new under-geared 80 could farm orr until they get some money to buy rare, but they probably don’t want to spend the time so they still have masterwork items.

These are all choices that people make. This contradicts your statement about playing to have fun as opposed to working. I understand that everybody has their right to not play with somebody, that’s fine. But I’m just getting a little tired of people looking down on people who use MF. To me fun is getting good drops. I love the playstyle, but seriously, isn’t it more fun to play through a dungeon and get an exotic that you can sell for 4g, as opposed to running through the dungeon and getting a couple of blues. Both are fun, one is more fun/rewarding.

Also, this is probably one of the most civilized conversations I’ve had about MF gear. So thank you Raine.

Ethics.4519

I could just as easily ask, in a game that not about grinding gear, why do we have a stat which solely gives you more of it? Neither of those questions is very good though.

I agree. I don’t think MF should be in the game. But it is in the game so I’m going to use it, and my group shouldn’t look down upon me because I am a very skilled player. If I’m the most skilled player in the group (not saying I am, just if) then why should I sacrifice my personal reward to help carry THEM through the dungeon. Now that’s 4 people being selfish and unskilled.

I want to continually improve my play, my gear, and the other aspects of my build. It’s not work, it’s play.

Yes it is play. So why get upset with people playing the way they want it to be and turn it into work. I find this very funny coming from an anti-MF person. People site stats and improvement efficiences like they are an OPEX engineer in a manufacturing plant. If it’s play, just have fun your way. You know your group is doing bad because lack of skill, not a 10% lower DPS, which probably isn’t optimized anyway.

Ethics.4519

I have yet to see this question addressed. In a game of anti-min/maxing, what does this matter?

We all know, whether you want to admit it or not, that one person doing 5-10% less damage doesn’t really matter in the long run.

Oh no! Now your 30 min long dungeon run turns into 31 minutes. Are you going to blame the guy dying? Are you going to blame the guy not dodging? are you going to blame the guy who missed his interrupt? What about the person who forgot to put his food back on, or didn’t even bring food! Outrageous!

DPS doesn’t require a reason. Either you’re contributing or you’re not. If a basketball player misses the game winning shot, there’s no excuse. It’s like it’s okay because he just didn’t have the skill, but it’s not okay if his shoe was untied. I’m sure you naysayers will pick out some arbitrary detail in the analogy but the point still stands (INB4 He doesn’t have stats on his shoes)

“I guarantee you 90% of the people arguing against MF don’t”

Made up statistics are never a valid argument.

If there were a stat that did nothing but give a % of spawning a Rainbow Clown Wig, you probably wouldn’t want to run with people who stacked it over a passive combat influencing stat.. but it seems to be ok to run with MF, that influences combat no more than said Clown wig would. I don’t get it.

So you ding me for making up a statistic to prove my point, and then you counter that by making up a skill to prove your point. Nice work.

If the person was not dying, attacking bosses/mobs that are acceptable to be attacked, and the run felt like it were going okay compared to other PUG runs I’ve been in, I don’t care if they said they stack the % to rainbow cloud fart, I would still want them in my group.

I know the prices are subject to change. But I think they knew what they were doing when they posted that screenshot. I think they were prematurely trying to lower dye prices a little.

Assuming those prices stay the same, look at the cost comparison. One rare item from the box is 5 tokens, same as 10 dyes. On average I’d say rares are going for around 30silver ea at level 80. They are saying the price of a rare should be about the same as 10 dyes. That means they see unID dyes around 3s each lol. IF ONLY!

Edit: I guess you could also argue that they see the price of a rare as too cheap, and should be the equivalent of 10 dyes, which would be 1.4 gold =)

Best use for extra rares and exotics?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Ethics.4519

Ethics.4519

You can get ectos from both rares and exotics level 69 or above (maybe 68).

A good rule of thumb (with current TP prices) is to sell rares 28/29 s or more. Salvage the rest.

With a exotics its more of a gamble. I sell exotics. But if you have some cheaper ones you could make a lot of money, if you hit it big, by putting them in the MF. If it is accountbound and you don’t want to use it, definitely put it in the MF.

new and clueless

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Ethics.4519

Ethics.4519

In the early levels you will die, quite a lot most likely. Especially as a mesmer. You should start to shine around level 40 as a lot more traits start to become available. Since you said you’re new, I’m sorry if I offended you by telling you something you already know.

You should be utilizing weapon swapping. As a mesmer I would start off with a GS for long range attacks, hit your #2 and #4 to pop out illusions and take some aggro off you. If they get in close either kite or switch to say a sword/pistol to do some melee damage. You should be able to use utility skills like the stealth one which makes you stealth, and replaces your position with an illusion to help you buy time.

Make sure you also buy your training manual from the trainer. You can start that at level 11 and each level you get one trait point to make you stronger.

In early levels I always pick power weapons/armor because I think power is pretty OP early on. Also make sure your stuff is current. Don’t just wait for armor/weapons to drop. Talk to karma/heart vendors after you complete the heart. Some will have accessories to buy that will give you +3 or +5 power.

Don’t go to high levels too fast. There are 5 starting areas, 1 for each race. If you have completed queensdale go to celadon forest or plains of ashford to comfortably level while you figure out your class.

Also don’t be afraid to stick around to another low level in the area. Partnering up helps an insane amount, instead of trying to solo stuff.

@Ethics – I read it in the same way as you but it does contain the relevant arguments for and against MF gear.

As for contributing more to the team and not dying, read back in the thread I already answered this.

Okay, I read it. My MF set gives power, precision, MF. My PVT, obviously power, vitatlity, toughness.

Yes that person is taking more aggro, however I’m doing more damage thanks to the extra precision.

Do always run with stat food on? Do you always run with potions for whatever you’re fighting? Do you have your build perfectly set up so you can swap your weapons/attuenments to make use of your sigils?

I guarantee you 90% of the people arguing against MF don’t. I understand your argument that MF stat ALONE doesn’t contribute to the group, but in a game of anti-min/maxing you have to ask if that really matters.

To the OP, no that’s not bannable. The bannable part comes when you kick them at the end of the dungeon either to deny them the rewards or add in a guildie so they can get the XP. Doing it early/at the beginning shouldn’t be an issue.

Gimping yourself in a group with MF is leeching from the group, it’s totally and utterly selfish.

You believe that confession? That’s no more than an anti-MF user trolling.

My main exotics on my ele are PVT. Then I have a rare MF set. I don’t use MF sigil/weapon or jewelry.

As long as I’m not dying (which I rarely ever do w/ MF set on) I’m actually contributing MORE to the team than with my PVT armor.

I use my PVT on harder bosses, WvW, or when I kite like in AC path2.

This game is meant to feel like it’s always active and things are always going on. You can’t go afk in game like this and expect no downside. Even in safe towns or areas there are DEs that can pop up.

This could easily be abused anywhere. Say somebody revives you right as a WvW zerg is coming. So you just don’t click accept yet. You wait till they leave then Poof! Revived!

What about a mesmer? If the enemy is about to take your area, jump off a really high place and kill yourself, have a friend revive you but don’t accept yet. Wait till they take the dungeon then leave. Accept the revive and go portals your friends back in.

Good intentions, but bad idea.

Rangers aren’t that great tbh. I started with one and it was my first to 80. It was fun at the time but quickly got boring. If you want to stay range, you’re gonna have a bad time. sbow/lbow are great in PvE but are lacking in PvP. You would probably have to end up with a sword + off-hand, even though the #1 has a ‘ghost-root’.

I then got a thief up to 80 and had a little bit more fun. It’s awesome to spin-to-win (dagger storm) in wvw so you can catch a lot of kills on zergs. I had some fun but there’s a lot of get in/get out mentality which isn’t really my playstyle. I felt a little lackluster in PvE/dungeons has this is really a burst build (although p/d is pretty good for conditions)

I rolled an 80 ele which has now become my main. I love everything about that class. Even if they nerf it a little (which I agree they should) I’ll still be playing it.

PS I got a warrior to around lvl 20 or so but I didn’t care much for the playstyle. A little boring and not much thinking IMO.

The only reason I see Anet not wanting to make dyes accountbound is the hours it would take for employees to do this, and maybe they would lose some sales from the gem store from people buying dyes.
