The previous posters have been pretty spot on. The only thing I can say is make at least 3 characters and get a feel for what you like. I’d also recommend reading the profession threads and seeing what people are saying/complaining about. You’ll mostly see complaining, but some things are legit such as thief being incredibly annoying in WvW, rangers lacking a group role, necros having 1 build, etc. These are things you might not find out till you’re 80, and then you’ve already invested that time.
I agree with most people, in that GW2 feels a lot more like an MMO than GW1. Mainly due to the fact that GW2 is an open world where you go wherever you want and do whatever you want. GW1 was very linear and directed you from lobby to lobby by forcing you find groups.
A lot of the game is soloable, due to it being a little bit more for casual players. There’s content suitable for both casual (WvW, PvE, dungeons) and hardcore (sPvP, WvW, dungeons; mainly FoTM)
My human mesmer. I tried to make him look like me as much as possible. Then he could make 3 clones and we 5 could be an awesome basketball team.
That’s what a combo is.
A sequence of attacks that if executed correctly and precisely would reward you with additional damage. You can choose to not execute any combo but, you would not be rewarded for spamming auto attacks.
In the current meta, some professions deal more damage just standing there hitting auto attack. Hitting ANY other button would be a DPS LOSS. Think about it.
It’s almost as if you didn’t even read my post. I’m not sure what you’re even arguing in this one. Your meta point, although I agree with it, is irrelevant to your original post.
There’s no point in holding onto all of this. I kinda feel like you are either a troll or a hoarder, or both.
Use fire breath #2 before using #5 if you want the extra damage.
Combos are a sequence of abilities that players must execute with timing and accuracy. Timing and accuracy are skills that players can sharpen with practice. With enough practice, you can execute the combo faster, giving your opponent less time to react.
Fire 2 is a channeled ability, similar to a flame thrower. This ability would have to be interrupted midway through to land the combo quickly. Even though your solution works, I would’ve built Fire 2 differently. Instead of channeled, it would’ve been a 1 hit attack that applies burning.
However, if Fire 3 had burning, Fire 2 would be redundant. Fire 2 could be retooled to work in a combo with Fire 4. Fire 4 is a Ring of Fire on the ground. Fire 2 could be a flaming fist ground slam that caused AoE damage but; also causes an AoE knockback stun when used inside the Ring of Fire.
The combo then would be, Air 4, Air 5, switch to Fire, Fire 3, Fire 5, Fire 4, Fire 2.
A more complex version would be, Air 4, Air 5, switch to Fire, Fire 3, Fire 5, Fire 4, Fire 2, switch to Earth, Earth 3 (magnetic grasp to bridge the gap), Earth 4 (Earthquake knockdown), Earth 5 (Churning Earth), Lightning Flash teleport if target gets out of range.
You seem to contradict yourself a little. In your original post, from what I understand, you’re saying that you want the #3 to have longer last burning, to allow you to hit #5, but then you say my idea wouldn’t work because you wanted the combo to be fast, and you want skill to come into play so you have to pull it off quickly, counter to your original complaint.
My combo is similar to yours, except I use the #2 and interrupt it halfway through (sometimes) which I think is worth it. Then I switch to earth, hit #3 to share fire aura, hit arcana blast for the finisher, then hopefully pop in #5 to get an extra 3 stacks of might, maybe popping my cantrip to gain stability, depending on the mob I’m fighting.
All your combo ideas are good and interesting, but what I just said is interesting enough as well. The issue is that it eventually becomes button mashing. It no longer becomes “zoom in, knock down, surge ahead, burn, hit big damage, combo field, share aura, share might” after awhile it turns into “f3, 4, 5, f1, 3, 2, 5, f4, 3, r, 5, e” (with my keybindings)
Edit: My big grief is that combos seem to happen too often, and don’t contribute to the fight that much. If a ranger is sitting there pew pewing and an ele is fighting normally, coincidentally there will combos between the projectiles and fields.
I would like to see it revamped so that the combos are a lot more significant, but they hapeen less often and have to be planned or intended. I think there should be less finishers, and I think the fields should last longer. Look at a poison field for instance, it’s up for a couple of seconds usually, and all the projectile does is poison…. but it’s already poisoned, so it’s pointless. If it added a different type of poison that lasted longer or ticked more, that would make it worth it.

Sold one, once. I’ll forever lose sleep over not knowing what it was.
This is hilarious, and almost describes me perfectly. I have many… many alts and have never sold a single un-id dye. In fact, I even bought around 50 dyes when they were 13 silver, hoping to keep them and sell later (like now at 18-19s). A day later I ended up just opening all of them and losing a lot of money. Oh well, just a game.
Use fire breath #2 before using #5 if you want the extra damage.
How much could i save by building my own PC?
The more expensive of a rig you go, the more you will save in building it. You can also customize it for your needs.
I think this was the cheapest gaming PC on tigerdirect http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2546170&Sku=C447-12001
Roughly a similar barebones kit (better CPU, slightly worse GPU) http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7544705&Sku=B69-0694 + $100 for windows (and $20ish for an optical drive). Just keep in mind not all barebones kits are created equally. A decent amount will leave out video cards, some will leave out HDD, optical drives, ram, etc.
If you go down this path, definitely research into it a lot and watch those 3 videos I sent you earlier. Right now, go with AMD CPU and Radeon GPU. They are better for a budget, however the quality is with Intel CPUs and Nvidia GPU.
I say play the game how you enjoy it. If the legendary is wants keeps you logging in day after day, then keep your goal and go for it. If you would still log in after buying your back piece and weapon, enjoying wvw, dungeons, etc more, then I say drop the legendary goal.
My personal opinion is to wait until they have the scavenger hunt and prices drop. But that’s because I’m not all that interested in legendaries and I would rather spend 500gold getting the dyes I like, than buying a small part of a weapon
I can’t really answer either as I’m not sure.
I think you can test out the +5% in sPvP using one of the static weapons and just using fury a few times without the 6th rune, then a few times with the 6th rune.
If this still hasn’t been answered I’ll try it out tonight
This is so full of elitism it’s ridiculous.
If my PUG is doing poorly, I try to explain what’s going on and what they should be doing. It doesn’t matter what profession I am. That’s how I ‘carry’ my group… by making them better.
I was expecting to come on and just see one line that said “Be in a party of 4 warriors and a mesmer”
Can you explain how to skip the whole walking crap at the beginning with mag? I saw what you said about leaving one person in the video, but I’m still a tad bit confused. thanks.
1) You can watch youtube videos
2) Find a different guild
3) Before the dungeon starts, tell them you’re new. Ask them to quickly share with you strategies or how to do something before you start. TA isn’t as popular, but if you join a CoF or AC dungeon, people will assume you know what you’re doing, and get upset if you do something you’re not supposed to (run into the circle on AC path #2, bugging Detha)
So, there’s an update (most likely pure maintenance) without any descriptions and people automatically think that MF works on chests now?
I did about 8 CoF runs yesterday and got one piece of rare armor the whole time. Obviously this is small, but I don’t see how this rumor got started.
The only thing I have noticed is I’ve been getting more dye drops, and so has my girlfriend. Not implying this has changed, just saying it’s the only thing I’ve noticed.
Make sure you’re staying in the appropriate level area. Sometimes you might enter a zone for your level, but you’re on the wrong side and mobs are on the higher end.
Warriors should be rolling pretty much all PvE content. Stick around low level areas at first and just farm events with the daily zerg
This doesn’t seem like a valid complaint. The only weapon I really think is a dead weapon is the ranger shortbow. 2,3,4,5 don’t really add all that much in terms of dps, but are good situational uses.
Weapons are specific to certain areas or goals. Some weapons are more defensive, some offensive, some utility, etc. Don’t blame anet just because you’re too lazy to switch weapons.
Dagger isn’t helping during events kitten use a staff. Problem solved.
You will get two pieces of rare or exotic armor or weapon that the class can use. For example, if you get the warrior, it could be any heavy armor piece, GS, hammer, warhorn, etc. It will not be light/medium armor, pistol, staff, etc.
*I believe ranger one has a bug that includes rifles. It makes me think some Dev is upset that rangers don’t get rifles =)
As of right now it isn’t worth it, because your supply of laurels is ridiculously low. In a year when you have the amulets and everything you want, you could easily grab these boxes to get some ectos or maybe even a precursor.
Also, they hinted in the future that you may get laurels for other achievements, not just daily and monthly.
It can be done, but will be harder if you can’t build it. If you could build it you could go with the parts that matter (CPU, GPU, Ram) and ignore other items to save some money.
The hardest part is going to be finding a pre-built rig that is under $400 that has a dedicated graphics card (most will be integrated into the mobo).
Honestly, watch these, then ask yourself if you really don’t think you can do it.

Tigerdirect.com will have ‘barebones’ kits that give you the basics or almost everything you’ll need to get started. If you have a friend or family member who is computer savvy, they might help out as well
My vote would be on theif. Although ele is a great contender, especially since you don’t have to use a utility for 25% (although you can if you’re too lazy to get the 33%).
Can you clarify what you being too lazy to get the 33% max? You mean being too lazy to use the ele skills that give Swiftness?
With enough boon duration and the corresponding traits in Arcana and Air (the one that gives boons on attunement and the one that grants fury and swiftness on aura use), you can cycle Frost Aura, Air Attunement, and Shocking Aura for permanent swiftness and fury.
Exactly. Thank you for clarifying while I was away.
Haha. I was frustrated at first, but it’s not bad if you use a toon with speed buff signets like thieves or eles.
If I ever suffer through jumping puzzles on my main, I’ll go grab my asuran thief. Queen of jumping puzzles =).
Yes, do the monthly

IMO, nothing beats the sbow IA. Especially when it comes to moving around in vertical sPvP maps.
Yeah that’s not there. If you did you would have way more people undercutting by 1c, especially on high price items. Since its there, you may have people thinking a little bit more about the price they are posting.
My preference is 1>3>2>4. But I’m kinda standard when it comes to character looks, I don’t like to go all crazy.
I haven’t tried it but you might be able to preview stuff from the lockers? If you haven’t tried that, the lockers are directly to the right (kinda behind) you when you first get to the mists. It’s where you deposit PvP stuff.
Nice troll post.
Rangers underwater are OP.
Your pet is still alive when you’re downed, attacking just like mesmer’s phantasm, and you don’t even have to use the skill. Of all the things to complain about on a ranger, you pick the worst two.
Kinda same theory, but when I use the icy breath #2 on my ele in water with d/d on an ice elemental, I get a chuckle. You’re hurting ice by spraying it with ice/mist/sleet lol.
I like when I kill one of those blobs and they have items like sharp talons or fangs in them.
to have fun
+15
Heh, I literally just made this the other day and didn’t even notice it. I should have just gone with the GS to sell or something.
@Zach
Getting rares off the TP are pretty cheap, that way you can instantly get rares to outfit your toon,s o you can start working on dungeon exotics.
You say you like exploring, so just stick with the game. You don’t need 80 exotics to go exploring. Also, eventually you’ll get more rewards, like laurels so you can get 2 rare items for your class with 5 laurels.
Sounds like you hit Diminished Returns (DR) which is anti-farming code meant to thwart bots.
I thought that until he said it jumps back up to 10+ next wave. If it were DR it wouldn’t wear off that fast.
As far as the splitting the f key from loot, I would rather it just be a real auto-loot system. Automatic is automatic, pressing F is manual…. so wth?
Not actual kill stealing per se, but things like someone stealing aggro from a mob when you are trying to get your dodges in, or stealing a player or npc that you are trying to heal for the daily. It’s getting ugly out there.
Or you could just play normally, like the person who ‘stole’ your kill is doing.
Yeah, that seems like a very good deal. The cpu will be lacking a little bit, which is arguable the main bottleneck in GW2 because it is ridiculous CPU intensive.
As others have said, you run smoothly for PvE/PvP. You’ll be hindered on WvW. But there’s only so much you can do for that
lol @ the chat. “You’re face is on my d…”
Gratz on the completion.
Are you sure you’re not looking at the gem to gold price as opposed to the gold to gem price?
If you try to play GW2 on an integrated graphics card, you’re gonna have a bad time.
Meme’s aside, you’ll be able to run it (maybe?) but it won’t be fun. You’ll get crappy graphics and a decent amount of delay.
As others have said, your CPU is alright, but GPU will be your bottleneck. Tigerdiret has some good cards like the Nvidia GTX 650 or Radeon 7770 around $100 if you can afford it.
I put a ticket in with the same issue. I’ve never had it on the play screen, but it happened twice in a row on character select. I also get it randomly through out gaming whether 10 minutes into play or 2 hours.
The support came back and asked me to plug it in with ethernet then run another test, I don’t have a long enough ethernet cable… so… guess I’m SOL
I’m having this issue too. Although my computer doesn’t completely freeze up. I can ctrl+alt+ delete and end GW2 (not responding).
Support told me to plug in ethernet and run a different test (I use a USB wifi connection).
I also read somewhere else that people were thinking that GW2 is having issues with USB wireless connection. Are you plugged in with an ethernet cable or using wifi?
Of course it is. You’re looking at quad core vs duo core. You have hyper-threading with the i3, but cpu is really a strain for single thread use. Plus, you get all the extra room in the cache.
My i7 should be on my doorstep in 2-3 days drools
The great thing is almost anything pairs together well. So feel free to pick any class you personally like, and you guys will click.
With that being said, warrior/guardian is pretty good. You guys will own PvE and be desired for dungeons.
You could also run mesmer, coordinating it you guys could easily have solid uptime with Aegis (chaos armor from mesmer).
Ele has good AOE and can lay down some good combo finishers for the guards whirls or leaps (depending on weapons), plus fire fields for might stacking.
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/
I couldn’t find ATI Radeon x600, I’m also not familiar with it. 5450 did pretty poorly in the benchmark.
After looking at specs it seems the 5450 will be better, although still probably subpar.

Because it’s a game.
No kid (player) in your situation complained. The only one who should complain would be the person paying (Anet).
In your situation, it’s more like the person says “I’ll give everybody $20 bucks who cuts these two yards”. So you being stubborn cuts a whole yard by himeslf for $20. The other 5 kids share equllay because you probably gear checked their lawnmower and said they weren’t as elite of a lawncutter as you were. So they all cut one yard much easier together. Everybody gets $20 and you get upset because you did more work.
They mentioned something about using the system’s clock (instead of game clock) to determine which dailies to display. If your system clock is out of whack or not working, you could be seeing different dailies. However the server still only registers the correct daily, which might explain why 3 or 4 out of 5 are updating and the other is blank.
I’ve been getting these issues ever since the update as well. They are getting worse and worse for me with the more things I try. Sometimes it will happen on the character screen, sometime 5 minutes into the game, sometimes 2 hours into the game.
I sent a support ticket in and they requested that I hook up through ethernet. I don’t feel like running an ethernet cable through my living room and hallways, especially considering since launch I’ve been playing on wifi through USB and just now after this patch I’m getting issues.
(I also updated my AMD drivers from 12.something to 13.1, and yesterday just tried 13.2beta to see if that was the issue, no luck)
Sorry, I wont be of any help. I do have a similar issue. After I updated to a Radeon 7770, I would get a flash during my loading screen as well. Although I updated the gfx card, the loading screen actually got longer. It loads to about 90% (just guessing off of time) then the screen turns black for just 1 second, and goes back to the loading screen, and finally loads me inthe zone.
It does it whenever I have a zone loading.
I can vouch for shadow. Everything he said is spot on. I’ve been in lots of guilds and a couple of other servers, and none of them felt as right as Fang does.
Great leadership, good community, and lots of support. This guild really does have tons of variety and the members in it seem interested in everything. You know that feeling when you’re in a wvw guild and you ask if anybody wants to take a break and sPvP, then all you get is crickets? Not here. You’ll have several people volunteer up to join.
Some people are absolutely in love with it (See Gisei). Actually the majority of opinions I have seen/heard have loved it.
I applaud Anet for making the high price items wanted vanity items, not some uber stat efficient weapon/armor
I don’t like the idea of a system that starts eating all my food because I wasn’t paying attention and even though I’m not doing anything anymore it’s still going. It would be much better to have a way to access a handful of inventory items I want from the UI. I’m already using F1-4 for my class abilities, F5-8 would be nice for consumables.
I do like duration stacking though. That would be a really good way to make them more useful.
You wouldn’t have to. It’s just an option. And you could easily use alt+drag to split the stack. That way if you have a stack of 100 and you’re playing for 2 hours, you can split the stack into 96 and 4, then put the 4 stack in the hero panel slot.
I fully support this idea. I understand not wanting to clutter up the UI, but is it worth it to have to remember to open up your inventory in the middle of a fight/running and reapply food/buffs every 30 min? I vote no.
