lol I’ve gone from being able to go into any map whenever I want to huge queue lines. I don’t want to be in a tier 1 server…just want to play.
Chat is very limited, you only get two characters, can’t trade much on the trading post.
To me the negative is once you reach a plateau in the current system you are better off playing an alt, or just quitting ranked. The more matches you play the worse your teammates will get. Not arguing about my placement on the ladder. I just think there should be an incentive to keep playing your main. The best strategy in the current system is to wait until mid season play for a week or so and stop.

It could be the difference between being the worst player on a winning team and the best player on a losing team. Could also be it is the last weekend of the season so people that started late or playing alts came in and farmed you. In my experience it seems to vary. I’ll get long win streaks and then get periods where I have loss streaks. Since they hide the math from you, all you can do is speculate.
For better or worse, with the current match making system you can start late in the season in get where you would naturally end up after a couple days a of play. To me the biggest issue in the game is the people that play it. There needs to be something to weed out the people that afk or intentionally tank to troll people.
Also, the system needs to do a better job of separating players and motivating them playing their main account. Right now once you plateau, you can go to an alt and quickly walk up the ladder. This causes the lower tier players to repeatedly get farmed by people which isn’t the greatest system for growing PvP. Yeah they need competition, but let them progress against people of their same skill level.
I would keep the same system but break it into 2 or 3 groups. In order to advance a group, you have to finish in the top 1/3 of your group for the season. The bottom 1/3 of the groups get demoted at the end of the season. Obviously give better rewards for pips in the higher tier groups so the skilled players get rewarded more.
I ended up playing 18 matches on each character at the lower tier or ruby. I would alternate playing the main then the alt on the same builds. The alt was carrying a 12 game winning streak coming out of sapphire. The better overall record and win streak did not give the alt a free pass through ruby. The alt was 5-13 and the main was 4-14.
There wasn’t a huge difference overall, but the numbers show that the alt with closer losses and a bigger margin of victory. Another interesting stat was if you look at matches where my team scored less than 250. My main had 7 (39%), and my alt had 1 (5.6%). For wins by the same margin, my alt had 1 and my main had 0.
Character Avg Points for Avg Points against
Alt 410.4 459.0
L 373.2 514.1
W 507.2 315.8
Main 312.8 483.9
L 259.1 502.4
W 500.8 419.5
I’m all for it. I don’t care about name calling in the lobby, but people that don’t try during matches are the worst. Immediate and consistent consequences are the best way to address behavior issues.
Wierd that people are complaining about lag spikes on patch Tuesday. Could it possibly be related to Windows updates?
Injury is a poor analogy for this. It is more like someone from the stands coming into the field of play, tackling the player and not letting them play while the game goes on with no stoppage. I’m not sure any professional would want to compete in that type of environment.
With what happened in the vermillion vs. TCG match last night, I felt that I absolutely had to post in a thread like this because I am just unable to get over how much of a bad decision it was to just let that match carry on with the constant disconnects that vm had. If the result of that match stands then season 2 of the pro league is absolutely ruined for me, because that was the absolute most important series of the EU pro league when It comes to finals qualification and it was decided by a dc. Absolutely terrible. I really hope that the match is replayed at a later date. if they won’t let it happen with a different meta, then there is still next week to play it, have 6 games that week, I really don’t care. It will be a huge mistake for that match not to be replayed. If TCG win it as a 5v5 that is fine, but just don’t let a dc decide the most important game of the entire EU pro league.
Sorry if that sounded like me raging, but I needed to post something like that just to get rid of all the frustration I feel about that match. As for the OP, I think that having a 6th player in the match as a spectator would really help because it would limit the impact of a disconnect and allow matches to be fair which can only be a positive thing. If that is not allowed then I think that there should just be a reset of the game no matter when in the game it happens (maybe unless one team has more than a 200 point lead or something) and then if another dc happens then I think that the remainder of the series should be played on another week (keep it at 1-0 or 1-1 if those games were fine). It just stops me from enjoying the pro league if games are decided by disconnects so I hope the rules are changed.
A few things,
What professional sport eve allows for replayed matches?
Vermillion had a chance to grab a sub to jump in but they didnt have one available so what if this happened again in the next match?
As anyone who has ever played a sport said, you take it one game at a time. Injuries (dcs) happen and you live threw it and move on. No one owes anyone a rematch and no one should have a player watching in spectate mode.
If they can create a sit room where the player sees nothing and then ok im with you on a sub. Otherwise like any team in any sport trying to make the playoffs, you take it on the chin.
There is a trait that allows necros to do something similar. Also, comparing cast times is irrelevant since you still have to heal the person.
The res is too fast because it’s a dual res. The skill needs more counter play
You can easily kill the pet before the ranger tries to rez. There are plenty of class mechanics that are unique and strong. If the ranger is far enough off point in a group fight for anyone to notice them them you have a 2 man advantage somewhere. A mesmer could just as easily dropped a portal for the player that was going down so they could be safe.
There is a trait that allows necros to do something similar. Also, comparing cast times is irrelevant since you still have to heal the person.
Don’t ever post in unofficial fan forums. Those databases log ip addresses, and they are very easy to get into. Don’t use peer to peer communications. Realistically, there isn’t much you can do. However if they really are doing a dos attack, that can get the ISPs and feds involved since it is likely drawing enough traffic into the system to disrupt more than just your connection.
I don’t agree with discounting the blow outs. If all other players are really good, you could be such a liability that they get blown out. Unless the other team is awful, having an afk/non-contributed causes a blow out loss.
Also, I’ve been in plenty of matches where there were two opinions on how to play the map, and the team would have won if they would have committed to one of them. This is probably more common see the lower levels, but it essentially gives the other team a free win.
Elementalists that try to dps on a heal build are the worst.
I’m an average to below average player at pvp. My main is in ruby and I have struggled to get past the mid tier of it. As an experiment, I made a F2P alt and am tiring to get into the same level to see if it has similar match making or if my main really has the deck stacked against it. My alt won 30 of 50 matches in unranked to get to level 20. So far it has won 21 of 27 matches on its way to sapphire. Hopefully by the end of the week I’ll be able to compare the two accounts and see if there really is a matchmaking difference or all the bad matchmaking complaints are just raged induced illusions.
One of my last teams in emerald seemed to be different from what I normally get in ruby. We were down quite a bit at temple, and there was no raging. People just kept playing hard and made a close match when all seemed lost.
That post is way too long to read, but I’ve had more issue with the worthless elementalists. They run a build that does next to no damage, the go try to 1v1 someone on a point they for have, or follow an enemy player around the map.
To be competitive you should be able to switch classes if your team has too many of the same class. This is pvp so I see nothing wrong knowing more than one class. all the recipes have time gated materials in them, so I don’t see the issue about doing 3 matches a day.
I think having another element in the maps besides capping is good. It keeps the matches from being a tank fest.
By far the best pvp arena they put out. Had a great observer mode camera, rewarded balanced builds, and had a title track and rewards that were grindable while still favoring the highly skilled teams.
You played the longbow much better than the staff. I would either work on using your staff skills or go zerker lb/gs. If you stay back and pew pew you will be doing almost twice as much damage and be better able to control the match. Getting the opponent down faster will offer just as much support. You can still take S&R with that.
On staff the 5 skill will work well vs. ranged skills, and blasting the water field is a good heal. The 4 skill will pull off conditions and offer a snare would have worked well to help your crippled engineer track down the opponent at 3:10.
That shout build is designed to pull conditions off of allies on each shout, but you aren’t playing that close to the team so it isn’t running at full effect. For example in the first fight the Rev. was getting focused down with conditions and you ran by him on your way to stomp someone, then popped your shouts when you were out of range of him. Also, the staff had skills that could have helped him on the way into the stomp.

if it is a Logitech mouse the third button can be used in combination with the other buttons to create new bindings. Also can use the left and right click buttons to run. just trying to think of ways to maximize the mileage you get out of the mouse.
I’ve had good luck with feed back. Has helped me a lot. There are always trolls in the game. Is worse when you are binned with the lower tier players.
Unless you are an elite pvp player it it’s going to be a grind. I’m a below average player at pvp and should get the backpack early next season. The division track didn’t seem to reset between season 1&2. Also, if it was the last achievement you needed for part III it gave you credit for the first division of part IV too.
As for the loss steaks, you need to figure out what you are doing wrong. It could be the build, how you are playing it, or both.
Well, I’ve completed 14 achievements on Season III. That includes 4 profession achievements. Three of those; Necromancer, Ranger and Elementalist I pretty much had to learn while playing as I don’t normally play those classes.
I’ve fought through 30+ loss streaks, seen my win percentage fall from 50% to something like 10% at one point. Full time work hours have gone into struggling to achieve over a period of weeks.
Now, I’m expected to cross 3 divisions and buy wings. I don’t have the tickets for wings and there is no way I’m going to cross 7 divisions in the two remaining seasons. It’s taken me from day 1 to today to get to Sapphire T3.
I’m not good enough? I’m in the division I should be in? Then why should I play and give the elites cannon fodder to pound on?
It’s very clear that I will never win the wings.
So all that work is for pretty much nothing. THE ACHIEVES DON’T CARRY TO NEXT YEAR, SO THIS IS A COMPLETE WASTE. I feel like I got led into trying an impossible task just to be another body in pvp for the elites to beat on.
Right now I feel I ought to give up on this game.
The post didn’t prove anything about “MMR Hell”, but the matches gave very good insight into what is the most efficient way to affect a match. It also debunked the myth that you have to run a HOT build or you will fail. Was like the fluffy bunny scene from Monty Python. How cute they have a Ranger with a greatsword and a wolf. This should be an easy fight…
AS for the MMR hell, I have a poor win/loss ratio and mostly play late 9pm and later pacific (us) time. I get a lot of matches with griefers and people who quit after the first team match loss, but I have enough matches that are winnable that I could get out of ruby if I could step up my game a bit. I have no doubt that he could log into my account and get to legendary without much of an issue. He would probably lose a few matches than on his alt, due to being on the wrong side of the MMR equation, but there is not that big of a gap between the wins and losses on my matches.
There are a lot of things I don’t like about the matchmaking,, but S2 has made me spend a lot more time looking into why I’m not Performing well than S1.
Is it based purely on MMR?
Did I skip right over it by getting a 100% winrate in Ruby playing core ranger?
Part of me thinks that I just wasn’t bad enough to lose? The only games I lost were 1 in Emerald because my teammates were awful and I was refusing to carry the team fight (so that was my bad). And then later I just kept 1 v 1ing for funsies in Saphire so my team also kept losing in the team fight. Afterwards I would just go carry the team fight and we’d be on our merry way to a crushing victory.
This kind of just makes me think that “MMR Hell” is simply that people are where they are supposed to be.

“Lower tier ruby what do I need 2 do 2 win”
I’m in the lower tier of ruby and struggling to put together win streaks. What is the main thing I need to focus on to win more matches?
Take a look at my vod, playing a non meta build vs. his vod playing a meta build. Given that the OP of this thread is saying, “can’t put together winstreaks” I think we could say he is in MMR Hell? Yet when you compare the two the difference in game play is apparent. I do not believe this player, at his/her current level should be making it out of Ruby.
Edit: It seems that the way season 2 works players are matched up on their teams with similar MMR which would then allow for people on winstreaks to just keep winning. This is highly likely what happened and I did just skip over “MMR Hell”.
1) Agree. I have been experimenting with different options though due to my inability to avoid conditions from Mesmers/Necromancers, and the lack of party cleanses at this level. You’ll probably see me hit the poison field a few times when I was looking for the speed boost from slick shoes out of habit. F3 in this case.
2) I’d like to say it was because I didn’t want to spam skills through confusion, but most of it is I’m thinking too much about what to do vs. knowing what to do.
From the first bit of the first video, I can point out two big things for you to improve on:
1) Swap out the Purge Gyro for Slick Shoes. This skill is absolutely crucial if you use it well. This will secure kills, prevent revives/stomps, and allow you to escape fights that go badly. Purge gyro is nice against necros, but it won’t save you. You also get a second stun break, which is again crucial.
2) Spend less time walking around and more time using your skills. You should always be casting something in a fight, even if it’s just the autoattack on the elixir gun while you have to stay back. However, you wasted a LOT of time just trying to decide where to go and what to do. You would have started that mid fight a lot better if you just popped Elixir X and jumped into the mid. If you get pressured too much, you can always dip back out of the fight and drop the transform, but when you stand back, you let the enemy get the cap advantage of the point.
Anyways, I hope you have gotten the advice you’re looking for here and good luck on your games. Also, kudos to you for not jumping on the melodramatic self-pity party that others are trying to throw.
Play well and you will win games. Play better and you’ll win more.
Thanks for the support xD. I don’t’ feel like I’m being jumped on though. The team lost and I know if I played better I could have made a difference. Mechanically there are things I’m not executing naturally, and conceptually there are still things I’m not getting as far as what is the best move to make. I know what my thought process was for the match and it is good to hear what others that know the game better would have done differently.
I really don’t get why people are jumping on this guy tell him to play better. Is he the best engi out there, most likely not. Could he have done better , most likely yes. But it’s very CLEAR he is carrying this team hard . If he had someone who is ‘similar skilled’ as him on his team he would have won those matches pretty easy. If you replace him with someone who really is ‘similar skilled’ with his teammates, those matches would be blow outs.
Thanks for commenting. Am trying to get better with the build, but obviously I need more practice at it. Thunderclap was off cool down for a while.
As for the aggressiveness, they had a Nero and a Mesmer. I don’t do well against their condition pressure, so I didn’t want to overextend. We didn’t have an ele, so I didn’t think I’d be able to get much team support. It is probably just a skill level issue, but I felt like if I pushed much harder I would die. I ended up doing 427k direct and 7k condition and taking 241k physical and 123 condition damage. What are respectable numbers for a match that was mostly spent in team fights?
When I engaged the Nero, I felt our Revenent was going to die and the Nero would end up with home. The Nero was able to kill my rez gyro before it saved the Rev, but I was able to kill the Nero and keep it off home. We wouldn’t have lost home at that point if the guardian wouldn’t have stood in the spawn for 15 seconds after it spawned. I didn’t use stealth gyro because I didn’t take it. I think the elixir is better when there aren’t a lot of thieves. The moa potion is great for finishing off low health people, especially Necros that pop shroud right before they are going to die. To be honest, I don’t think the gyro is very good for rezing. It sits on top of you so it isn’t like people don’t know where you are, and anyone who was paying attention knows they can just attack the area where the person died unless it is a mesmer/Ele/Thief
The mid fight started 2v2 and I thought we could pressure them off the point enough to recap it. They did a good job holding the last tic on it until the rest of the team came in.
With the beast, I was more worried about losing if the other team got the beast, but I should have backed out sooner when I saw the Messer going for it too.
(watching first one)
You could be a lot better mechanically. You misclick skills, you kind of stand around and do nothing during fights a lot. You should always be attacking, melee or range. You play one of the most durable classes in the game…get in there, draw there fire. You should be using thunderclap way more.
You stood around trying to stomp with multiple team mates… (when you have a gyro on top of this…)
You let them take your home for free and don’t pressure their far at all.
Not using LoS
Kind of kittening around with a rev off point, you kill him but you lose a team mate and lose mid. whereas you could have gotten that res (stealth gyro good)
That 2v1 (at beast)…took way too long, while home got decapped. Again, mechanical skills. Awareness.
Every fight you take you should ask yourself, is it a good fight? And why am I taking it?
fighting on mid, when they have it capped, and just not a good fight to take at that moment.. you just didn’t accomplish anything. No points, team mate died. Far was free to take (I think, its running while I type, I may miss a few details.)
Then at the end you go beast, when simple math will tell you that it will not give you a win. You let home get decaped on top of this.
Oh and the build looks questionable but I’m not a scrapper main.
Lot’s of mistakes, good luck!
Not EU sorry
Are you EU? Queue with me!!!
Thanks. Agree that was the main factor. When you are 5 randoms some times everyone is on the same page and sometimes they aren’t. Is there a good rule to go by for who is supposed to go to different points, or positions people call ahead of time so you know who is going where? It seems like the team realized they screwed up overcommitting to mid, but then over reacted at the end.
Had a quick look over some of your first match.
The first and largest issue here is lack of rotation. If your team is all at the same point and you kill someone, you need to consider what the player respawning is going to do next. If they are smart, they won’t continue to feed into the same fight and will instead look to grab your home node instead.
Remember that a player respawns in their base 15 seconds after they are finished. As a general rule, you want to be within sight of the route from their base to your home node (in this case the beach area on Forest) for when they respawn. This is as simple as counting to 15 when an enemy player is finished and proceeding to turn your camera so that you can see the beach area and run to your home node if you see someone on it.
If the player that was finished is a highly mobile class (e.g. thief), it may be wiser to assume that they will go for your home node on respawn and be prepared to defend your home node when they respawn. The more mobile the class that was finished is, the closer to your home node you want to be when they respawn.
Your team lost the first match despite winning most of the fights mostly due to this lack of rotation.

Related to the mouse, I switched from using the on board memory on the mouse to using the “automatic game detection” (settings on PC) and I haven’t had the same problems. However, there appear to be some game updates since then so I can’t confirm for sure.

1) Create an incentive to help other players. From my experiences I think the PvP community is helpful if the player is open to people analyzing their game play. I’ve had plenty of people take time to show me tricks to improve my play, and provide good feedback on game streams. However, there currently is nothing in the game to reward people for this type of behavior. This helps raise the overall level of play, and encourages people to keep playing even if they are not doing well.
2) Qualification to play in ranked. You should have to have x number of wins with the build you are using before you can queue for ranked. You can use the preseason for prequalifying the builds you want to run.
3) Harsh and consistent punishment for toxic players. They ruin the experience for the other 4 people on their team. The guy that spends the match telling everyone how dumb they are, or AFKs the minute they get focused down in a team fight should have a significant punishment. Maybe make them requalify their characters, or a week ban from ranked matches. I’ve won plenty of matches where the first fight was a cluster and we were down 100+ points. If this guy is on your team it isn’t going to happen.
4) Improve training grounds. Give the class NPC dummies decent AI and builds. Make them look like the enemies you are fighting. That way people can learn what skills they will be facing look like. Right now you can auto attack kill most of them with at the most healing yourself once.
5) To me more interesting twitch content would be having something similar to ultimate fighter where upper tier players coach a set of lower tier players for a season and you can see them get better. Also seeing the matches from the POV of the player with the text window open that shows damage/healing would make it useful for other people to follow and replay to see what is really going on. Right now ESL matches really aren’t relevant to what most people would see in a sPvP match and look like a firework show with someone talking over it.
I think limiting people to fixed builds would improve overall game play. To be effective at the game you have to not only know how to play your class, but you also have to know the skills of the other classes. I’m all for limiting PvP builds, especially in the lower tiers. Simple rules of math state that certain builds are going to be better. Letting people play bad builds makes things harder on the other 4 people on the team.
The concept of “balance” being every profession can be effective at condition, power, support and bunkering is ignorant. That is too many options for people to process and effectively play well against.
Less than 120k damage done, and less than70k received and 225 total points? Assuming those were all from kills, you would be under 5.5k damage per target. Unless you cc locked the other team and were a portal champ I don’t see how you helped the team much.
http://www.syric.net/images/gw541.jpg
Look at your damage. Like wtf, you healed your team more than you deal damage? That’s an indication of a wrong play style.
I think it’s best if you recorded a game where you lose so people can see how you do.
To me this is the number one issue with ranked for the average player. The lower your mmr the more likely you are to run into these players. They should have a significant punishment, like season ban from ranked.
I have had very positive responses from the community when I asked for help this way. I’ve even had people that happened to be watching me stream PM me and take time to show me tricks to better use my build. To me being able to reward people that take time out to help make other players better should be rewarded over grinding out wins.
You can’t have your cake and eat it too. There aren’t a lot of people that are going to invest enough time and effort to get to div 2 legendary this fast. If you only want a team of your peers, then you have to wait. If you expand the system to find players that are in lesser divisions, then you risk carrying scrubs to legendary status.
If you want to play that bad there is unranked, or you can make an alt account,
Good post. Would be good to have more like it.
Guess the game needs more good players like you in your time slot, or you are going to have to get grouped with non-deserving scrubs and carry them to legendary. Pick your poison.
On my mouse if I switch profiles the buttons will work again. So I keep my mouse application open. That way I can quickly alt tab out switch my profile when buttons stop working. If it is the run keys, a dodge roll seems to fix it, but I usually burn a stunbreak before I figure out why I’m rooted.
The issue seems to come and go.
If you aren’t using it can it still mess up your settings?
I’ve occasionally had problems where my w button wouldn’t make me go forward. Holding left and right mouse buttons won’t either. Still not sure what exactly makes it come back. Sometimes it seems to be a knockback or dodge roll will fix it. Other times I just alt tab out.
Similar issues with my mouse. Logitech g600. A random side buttons will stop working in game. I have to alt-tab out change configurations to a different set and back then it works right. Pretty frustrating when this happens in a pvp match. I’ve basically been playing with the mouse configuration software open so I can quickly alt tab and do it during a match. This happens much more often than the keyboard issue.
Thanks to everyone that provided feedback and comments. There were a lot of good tips. Hopefully I’ll be able to put them to good use!
I appreciate any real feedback. I have been kittened at the match making and complained about it, but at the end of the day I can only control how I play. I don’t see myself getting far with the current system but hopefully I can at least come out of the season a better player.
I just watched the first one. There are a few rotation mistakes here:
1) You rushed in at the beginning when you only have 1 teammate behind you. That’s usually the most common beginner mistake in rotation. Always count your number before jumping into a fight. In a 2v4 you will die 100% of time unless you are an ESL player (in which case I still doubt they can win 2v4 against the average players). It’s even worse that your other teammate is a Thief, who won’t be able to peel/heal you.
2) You tried to rez multiple times when you didn’t have skills to secure the rez (for example, knock the enemy out). If you don’t have those skills to secure the rez, then don’t rez it.
3) You don’t seem to be able to take advantage of the chain daze and block from Scrapper. Learn the leap daze combo and leap heal combo. Block from Scrapper is really OP.
4) At 8:10, you got stuck in the terrain. Learn the map so it doesn’t happen in the future.
5) You also stay in the red circles a lot of times. Positioning is very important. Just think that if you manage to stay outside of a red circle, you heal yourself 2k (random number).Wow way to go, didn’t you see how his teammates played, he mightve done all you said but that doesn’t change the fact that Matchmaking is hideous.
Thanks for taking the time to post some tips. I know I screwed up the start. I thought the warrior was with too, but you are right neither could support.

On a positive note the warrior and theif were eventually able to kill the lord. xD
Here are some examples of my matches. Like most casuals on the wrong side of the MMR formula I’m frustrated with losing. Going back and watching my matches I know there is stuff I could have done better. What is my biggest issue?
