There was a 3 to 4 man premade team I kept running into that was pretty strong. Some of the matches they would have a DC player so they would lose. After playing against them a couple times, I ended up on their team They asked for gold for a win. I laughed at them, and they ended up having a player disconnect shortly after. Is there a way to report with attachments? The bug report didn’t seem appropriate and the in game reporting doesn’t seem to do much.

While it is an advantage, the matchmaking algorithm seems to take it into account. Most of them are a group of poor players. Yes there is the occasional one that stomps people, but they aren’t going to be in your division long. I’m always excited to play a guild team as that is usually a free win.

What makes this season bad is the incentive to lose. I had a match with ruby/ sapphire players on temple. I went home, and before I had home capped, all 4 were downed. There is no way anyone is that bad. Either they are intentionally playing bad, or they got carried based on the fact that they had to win matches based on the mm.

At equal skill levels, the scrapper or druid may be able to kill a bunkered in DH after a couple minutes, but it is not worth their time to try and decap a DH. If the Druid/Eng had the point to begin with they will have to concede it to the DH in order to kill them. Unless you have numbers to burst a DH down it is better to out rotate them.

Druid and scrapper shouldn’t be hard for a DH. Neither one have burst damage. DH should be able to easily decap them and hold a point and keep their health up. They might not be great in open world combat vs Druid but if you have to fight on point the druid will struggle to get a DH off of it.

You wont be killing a mender symbolic DH alone on thief.

Just like a DH won’t be 1v1’ing a druid or scrapper. We all have counters.

In a 1v1, a meta druid or scrapper will absolutely out-sustain a DH. Hop on a DH and give it a whirl.

The other team could easily put the match out of reach in that time. If they can’t put it away, do you really think you should get points for being carried to a win?

The counter to mender symbolic DH is power rev. Of course the rev has to be skilled to get the kill, but a power rev is the hardest to handle for a DH mender.

dont forget to mention the dh doesnt have to be skilled.

Where in the EULA does it say you can’t use macro functions from a mouse? The closest thing I could find would be this:

Use, or provide others with, any software related to the Game, including any automation software (a.k.a. “bot”) or software designed to change or modify operation of the Game;

If you interpret that to include key stroke macros in an MMO gaming mouse, they could terminate your account for just having the drivers for it installed on your machine as you are using the software. I would have to see where they specifically call out the use of commercially available gaming hardware as a code of conduct violation.

The difference I see is their ability to heal, mitigate damage, and deal damage at close range. the old trap build isn’t much different. However, the newer variants on burn and bunker guardian are strong bunker builds that can bunker, do good damage and knock people off point. Yea you can kite them, but they are decap/cap machines that are very hard to get off a point, and their damage mitigation doesn’t cause them to lose a point.

Not sure why you say druid can counter a DH and put it down in under 13 seconds. They don’t have that kind of damage. A druid can’t hold a point against a dh. DH has too much close quarter damage, knockbacks, and your pet is going to set off it’s heal trap. They can kill them and disengage, but it isn’t a good use of time to stick around long enough to kill them. Once the DH has the point a druid would be of more use somewhere else.

Hmm, i can agree with the nerfing but not the druid, HoT pets are the problem. Seems like they do 70% of the job while druid is kiting, healing all the dmg non-stop. It comes to a point where a druid afk’s and the smokescale/bristle just does the rest.

The community needs to take some responsibility for matchmaking as well. They can develop players and play in a way that aligns with the match making . Anet can provide a framework to help but at the end of the day the community reaps what they sow.

Anet can’t make players better. The community can. All sports teams do “camps” to attract players, teach them, and find future prospects. Most game guilds have no interest in teaching the game to the community. Unless they do that people will just leave for whatever is the latest new thing.

If the community wants good match making they need to understand how it works, not so they can exploit it, but so they can play within the system so they get placed properly. No matchmaking system can account for people that troll matches. One players actions affect 9 other people in the match. The same thing goes for people exploiting the system to get a higher ladder position than they deserve.

As for what anet can do, to me the biggest things are transparency on what your ladder rating/MMR is, and provide incentives to people/guilds to grow the community. Some specific things I’d like to see are:

  • publish people’s ladder position through the API. If they don’t want to give exact numbers, at least create categories.
  • some sort of feedback on the affect a match has on your ladder position as well as your rating relative to others in the match.
  • give rewards to guilds that improve players ladder ranks.
  • provide a mechanism to track a match or duel in the hot join servers. An option to have a validating observer would be useful.
  • better communication on how the match making system works. There is a very detailed description on the wiki of the matchmaking algorithm, but a large segment of the community thinks that it is out of date. Specifically, people don’t think there is an incentive to keep playing a loss, but wiki article suggests otherwise.

You guys can keep talking all you want..you’ve been doing that for 4 years now…the solution has always been the same and won’t change :" keep bad players out of pvp till they learn to play"

-You need far stricter requirements for pvp and better/alluring rewards to push people to try harder
-Finally add prestige to PvP like it was in Gw1

This “everybody wins” mentality of your will always hold Gw2 back..you can keep changing formulas from now till the end of time, bad players are not incentivized to get better and will always drag down the overall quality of the game

Pvp has a completely different set of skills that are optimal for it over pve or WvW. Nearly every post I see complaining about build diversity isn’t from someone saying they have mastered all the classes and are bored that they only have a couple optimal builds. It is I want to use weapon x, trait line a, and class 1 and it isn’t optimal foe pvp therefore the game isn’t balanced.

I played gw1 since the beginning and it had the same “issue”. There were a limited set of skills and builds that were effective. To me what made its PvP better was the varity of game modes, and the reward system for hall of heroes was heads and shoulders above anything they have implemented.

I mostly look at the forums, but I haven’t seen much in the way of community pvp events besides a tournaments. To me the game is pretty complex. Because of this I think the best way to improve match quality is to provide better resources to learn learn the game.

Most sports have camps out on by major coaches and teams to help grow the sport and improve the quality of players that are coming up through the ranks. I think it would be cool to have events focused on improving skills vs. More competitions for prizes.

I’m sure some of the top players could get a lot of viewers and maybe even charge for access to the server they are on if they did a clinic for the profession they main on.

Another option would be to broadcast scrimmage matches where they observe the match and stop the game to explain when people are making good or poor rotation decisions.

Any other suggestions?

Maybe it is your build. I go for damage. I beat them even faster on my f2p (no hot) with LB/GS and zerker stats. Time your ls5 or your bow 3, or pet howl. Once you get a stun/knockback they are done. I use protect me on that account. Can also trait beast mastery to taunt on pet F2 for even more control although you give up quickness on pet swap. Also if you go LB its channel will still hit them if they try to stealth during it, although most thief’s aren’t running much stealth. I use a bird and the wolf on my f2p account.

I beat some of them, but there have been too many that I just cannot. I am an experienced PvP player, reached Dragon like a year ago as a Ranger. My tanky build uses automatic regen, signet of the wild for more automatic healing, sigils and runes of water and purity, Cleric amulet, axe/horn/greatsword. Even with the occassional evades and mega healing, and the sword’s block/push, they are creaming me. Using drakes with Taunt—my drake even did a 10K hit on someone today, but I still died to these 2 daredevils in 1v1 in 1-2 minutes. Not all but some don’t even seem that skilled—its their build and it feels very overpowered.

Then again I’ll admit I don’t have HOT, so maybe its because I’m not using Druid? This is the tankiest build I have though and it often is able to hold a point 1v2 for several minutes.

I can easily beat them on a druid build on my main as well as a pew pew build on my ftp account. They are good for back capping and +1 but unless you have a lot of skills on cool down you should not lose to them 1v1, assuming the relative skill level between the two players is somewhat close.

I think Daredevil is way OP. Why did thieves get so much evade when they already had an almost exclusive hold on Stealth? Evade was a Ranger mechanic. It is not right that there are players much running around PvP almost invincible except to AOE. Even CC isn’t very effective.

I say this as a 2-year ranger who has tried taunting, blocking, and kicking them. They just stealth and stun break, while throwing deadly conditions and evading at the same time. Played against 2 daredevils today in my super healing Cleric build and still died to these daredevils in about a minute each. This is nuts.

You are quoting an article that was a simplification of the algorithm. Yes it looks in a 15 pip range to find players at a similar level to make a team. If you look at the wiki article it breaks it down in to more detail how the decisions are made.

It is really pointless having us argue about it when we don’t have access to the source code. I would like to think the devs can keep their wiki current because that level of detail can not be crowd sourced. If not shame on them. If you look at the updates on the wiki pages they are after season 2 started which has pretty much the same algorithm as season 3.

Here is another wiki article that speaks about the match making and it also states ladder position is used:

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Structured_PvP
Primary article: PvP Matchmaking Algorithm
The PvP matchmaking algorithm is the Glicko2 matchmaking rating (MMR) and helps match players with other players with similar skill levels.
The metrics used during matchmaking include: rating, rank, party size, profession, ladder position, and dishonor.

The devs should really clear this up and either fix their wiki or state that it is accurate. In my opinion having the key parameters that determine matchmaking hidden behind the curtain so you can’t see how they are affected by your play creates a huge amount of confusion, frustration, and speculation. If they are going to continue to do that then they need to do a better job of advertising how the system works and correcting misinformation posted on their forums.

FauxPlay, you are quoting unrelated data.

Matchprediction and therefore the ladder arent used in season3.

In a certain pip range players with similar MMR are taken and put into a group of 5, then they get matched against a team of 5 of similar mmr +/- a certain amount.

MMR is calculated using Glicko2.

Matchprediction isnt used anymore.

And to be perfectly honest, reading and experiencing things like in attachment, dont make me want to come back for more. Id rather play Overwatch then this crap.

Maybe some fanboy posted a bunch of fiction there, but I doubt it. I’d take what is published on their wiki over a random players personal opinion. It clearly says it takes both ladder standing and MMR into account when making matches.

This is from the matchmaking section: The first phase, called filtering, gathers players based on their current MMR and Ladder Points.

(…) Now try to make your mmr low, and show your come back skill with 4 kittens in your team!

My mmr is kitten, has been always kitten, will always be kitten because I have over 4k ranked matches under my belt and learned the pvp ropes in gw2.

Faux Play.6104

To me the big issue is transparency in where players stand in the rating system. They don’t publish your MMR, ladder standing, and the point system displayed at the end of the match isn’t really representative of your contribution to the win or loss.

As for where I’m getting my information, I’m taking information published by Anet:
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/PvP_Matchmaking_Algorithm

MMR has both a ratings deviation component as well as volatility component. Tossing matches you should will affect both of those.

In addition the system includes a ladder ranking. This is a quote from the ladder section:
You are awarded points for playing well, and often, and sometimes even if you lose a game. Even if a comeback may not seem possible, you can still be rewarded for continuing to try your very best. If you find yourself in an uneven match, fear not, you will risk fewer points for losing, and have more points to gain for doing well. Likewise, if you participate in an easy match, don’t think you’re home free. Performing well might award you points, but performing poorly will take even more away.

The motivation to play is to get better matches in the future. While pips aren’t offered, the same core rating elements are there. If you finish close on a match you aren’t supposed to win, you will get put higher in the ranking ladder. 100 points are not that hard to make up in a match.

We all know the system is bad, but it’s still missing penalties for being a kitten. There should be bans for afk or refusing to fight. With long ranked suspensions most people would at least try to play even with 100 points behind.
Without bans for such behaviour most people seem to think it’s ok to blow a match.

And how you will find out, who is afk and who is not? If i run around the map doing nothing when i just want it to end faster will it be afk? Maybe I am just stupid? Maybe I am just playing it this way by runing around the map. What if I just go to the mid all the time and feed enemy, just die there. It will help me to finish game faster, and I will not be afk.
You dont understand player, who goes afk. They dont have motivation to play, cos they know it is pointless. Return season one pip system, and you will see much less afk players.

Dude I have no idea what are you talking about. Where you get your information, I get mine from my games, and even after 10-15 win streaks I have 4 kittens in my team if I solo queue. Forgive me, that I dont trust your “expert” information.

I don’t think it is garbage. The math behind the system works. The issue is with the community playing the game. What I’m trying to point out is:

  1. Match quality and queue times go hand in hand. If you want close matches you will have to wait longer.
  2. A segment of the population won’t play hard for a whole match. There is no matchmaking system that can provide good matches when you have people that may or may not play once they get loaded into the match.
  3. Grouping people of similar skill level on a team will increase queue time. It is possible to create even matches by grouping elite players with average and below average players, but there was significant backlash after season one that elite players were being paired with very inexperienced players which created poor match quality.
  4. Regardless of what Anet does there will be crybabies out in force.
