To me the biggest thing is still matchmaking. I think the system is way better than it was in S1-S5. Grind based rewards are separated from skill based ratings and you can see your MMR now. However, there are still issues (maybe just perceived) that need to be addressed: both match manipulation and the decisions behind the system that actually make the matches. To me the most important things to focus on for matchmaking are more transparency on skill ratings for who we are playing with/against, knowing what we want the match maker to do, and to eliminate in game tools that can be used for match manipulation.

  1. Show all individual’s stats and MMR + gain/loss at the end of the match.
    —This will allow people to give fact based feedback, and see for themselves if the match making is working as intended.
  2. Show individual’s MMR on your team before match.
    —So you know who you may need to help out if there is a big gap in ratings.
  3. Give everyone and their pets a generic name for the match so you don’t know who you are playing with or against. (e.g. Red1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
    —Prevent match manipulation and queue dodging
  4. Disable map chat, whispers, and say in matches.
    —Prevent match manipulation
  5. Disable the ability to see if people on your friends/block list are in a match.
    —Prevent queue dodging
  6. Give information on what the desired split is for bronze/silver/gold/plat/legend.
    —It would be nice to know where you stand % wise. Looking at badges that I see in the PvP lobby and around the main areas, it looks like bronze is the most populated tier.
  7. Explain what the goals and desired limits are. (Max queue time, your team MMR range, opponent’s MMR range)
    —Compromises have to be made, but if people under stand what the goal is and the see of people they are with/against they can see the system is working.

More radical suggestion:

  • Split the season into two parts. Regular and playoffs. Regular season is all solo queue. Playoffs have both solo queue and team queue.
  • Split population into groups based on MMR for the playoffs. All teammates and opponents will be in your range for the playoffs.
  • Solo queue playoffs are the same system as the regular season except a limited number of matches are played to determine who ends up on top.
  • Can either use MMR or a bracket for the team queue.
  • Have the playoffs determine the final ratings for the top tier players.
  • For lower tiers, provide rating bumps for people that do well and playoffs but don’t make major awards to prevent sandbagging.

On a more serious note, I only look at map pings. Most of what is said in chat is worthless. If you have a lot of time to chat during a match you are either dead a lot, camping a node no one is attacking, or an afk troll.

Easier said than done but:

  • Don’t worry about your rank.
  • During a match, don’t focus on mistakes (yours or others) they are in the past and can’t be undone
  • Be flexible. This isn’t an RTS so you don’t have control over everyone else. They may run a split you don’t like, but your reaction to it could either keep the game close or throw it.
  • Recognize when you are tilted/frustrated and either go to unranked, PVE, hot-join duels until you calm down
  • Take breaks
  • Take time to watch your game play. You can pick up a lot of stuff that you didn’t see when you played.

look at your point differential. I lost 4 pts. one match. My team was full solo queue and low tier gold. The other team had a team and had two players in the top 200, and no one lower than platinum. If you are losing to people at your level the points lost will be a lot higher.

Yea but also most of the time people post of lopsided matches are in off peak hours when the abysmally low population is even more abysmally low. Plus you have to think how many matches 3% are of the whole population queuing for PvP matches, especially when the queue times are generally sub 3 minutes

People playing during off hours shouldn’t suffer such bad matches though when it was actually possible to split the teams more evenly and create a better match. I get it if there was just no better way to split the teams, but this isn’t the case here.

I had a match that was way off and it was not what i’d consider an off peak time. Around 3pm eastern time.

Have one to add. I’m low gold so was my team. We played against a top 100 duo and no one was under platinum on the other team. on the plus side I only lost 4 MMR points.

I think it is more an issue of quality vs. quantity. If you are winning your matches vs. top 10 players then you should be able to keep your position playing a few matches. However if it is coming against people that aren’t even in the top 100 then no. Alternatively, make a tournament at the end of the season where the top 500 are put in a solo queue and have a new 10 match placement.

There is a QA thread open started by the Mesmer for the pro league team that won the last two tournaments. Based on what I’ve gone up against, mesmers that portal well are the hardest to deal with. They can use it to both safely disengage from a fight and control more than one spot on the map.

Wins are the best metric. It is simple, and the people that are the most consistent and helping their teams win will end up with the highest ratings.

Example you are on a 2v2 at home and it is neutral. You down the 1st, and both you and your teammate are in good shape health wise and the other player is 30%. It is a favorable match up 1v1 for your teammate even if the other player was at 100% health. The best play for the team would be to leave and help another fight, but you are going to miss out on a kill and a capture. What do you do if it is individual score based?

Yes, matches are deliberately stacked. Here’s 10 of my nearly 20 games today.

That’s an average margin of just over 231 points. It’s abundantly clear that I’m being sent out just as cannon fodder.

I understand the desire to lessen queue times, but I don’t appreciate appearing to be a designated loser. I am not being matched to my skill level at all.

Looking at it a different way, if you average all the scores together you get this:
your teams: 365.7
Other teams: 406.8
The average score difference between your matches was around 40 points.

You were 3-7. In two of your losses your team scored 400+ points. Those were winnable matches.

Seems to be the new trend, 1 player on a team tanking himself to bronze and bringing his other 4 allies with him.

I’m glad I’ve quit the game now for the most part, after 4.5 dedicated years. I actually might log on a throw a bunch of games on purpose cuz apparently that’s not match manipulation at all and the other 4 players on my team can get dragged down with me, if they complain on the forums then I’ll tell them personally it’s because they have to get gud and carry harder.

Over break I was sick and was playing when I shouldn’t have been. Wasn’t trying to lose the matches on purpose just played bad. Then started trying different builds. If you are frustrated, losing, and on cold medicine, don’t play.

Made it back to gold. Will post a couple videos for proof. You won’t win every match, and you will have losing and winning streaks. The biggest thing is to focus and try your best each match. If you find yourself losing, replay your match.
1) it will give you time to become in-tilted.
2) you can see why the other team is winning.
3) you can see what you are doing well and what you can do better.

If you are purely focused on maintaining a position on the boards, you probably won’t have much fun, especially if you lucked into it and are just trying to hold onto it.

I managed to tank my main account into bronze, and I am in the process of working my way out. I’m not a great player, I have a f2p alt in gold and don’t belong anywhere above that. I’ve currently climbed into silver 2 and am confident I will be able to get up to gold before the season is over. Has it been painful at times, yes. Is it impossible for someone that is average, at best, to climb to the right place, no.

It is a skill that shows up as an icon for the DH when it is active. You can position yourself so you are near LOS if you can’t dodge it. They can’t pull you through walls. If you are a thief you should have more than enough tools to deal with it and move on to the next fight. Unless you are +1ing, trying to get a DH camped on a node as a thief probably isn’t the best play on the map.

Yes they can, look at screenshot, i got pulled into pillar when i tried to LoS it and use shs.

It is also stupidly easy to pull people into terrain in certain areas in pvp maps, LOS will actually get you stuck in walls.

On graveyard point LoS is pointless, you will just get pulled over/around the walls there.

DH pull reminds me sooo much on how broken Road’s hook is in OW atm which hits and pulls you through walls (that is in the game that actually requires aiming to land skills) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOkjhP7p1BQ . The only upside is that at least it doesn’t make you being stuck in terrain like DHs pull does.

Getting stuck in walls, and bouncing and taking fall damage are bigger issue than DH. There are a few spots in the maps where you can either get stuck or bounced. Any knockback, pull, teleport other skill can do it.

Overall, I think PvP has been improving. Not perfect, but getting better.

Immediate

  • No match to commence without all 10 players being connected

No brainer. It dosen’t happen often, but i’ve been in matches were all 10 players got dishonor because of server side issues. Also get rid of all bugs related to dishonor including getting it for winning an overtime match.

  • Introduction of player code of conduct based on fair play and sportsmanship, stiff penalties to eradicate match manipulation. Particular emphasis on AFK. Code of Conduct could be displayed on “Instructions screen” pre-match.

Agree, but without in game officials, it would be very difficult to prevent abuse of this. People would just be getting reported because someone didn’t like a play they made.

  • Resign option to be available upon occurrence of a DC mid-game.

Disagree. People should play through it. I would suggest finding a way to give people “partial credit” for wins/losses based on point differential. Good players will consistently be able to keep matches closer than lesser players.

  • Remove daily achievements from Ranked

I think there is enough of an incentive to win matches now that this shouldn’t be an issue, but I won’t complain if they remove it.

  • Solo q and group q (2,3,5 man). There needs to be an in-game option for competitive teams and protect solo q’ers from being “farmed”

I’d get rid of the duo and make it full solo queue. Then at the end of the season, or even a couple times a season have a “team” hat (randomly drawn from your division) tournament. Where you know ahead of time who you get to play with so you can organize as you wish.

  • If players are going to be rated individually some metric must be included to measure individual contribution. An individual’s rating cannot solely be tied to a team win/lose outcome.

People will stop playing to win and play to get stats. Never underestimate people’s desire and ability to exploit the system. The math for the current system works. The only change I would agree to is point differetial. Good players will be able to consistently keep matches closer than the poor players. However, you would also have to penalize close wins.

  • In the absence of in-game voice chat, there needs to be clearer communication with map pings. Not sure about everyone else, but I find the current ping items a bit confusing. I presume the Yellow Triangle is “caution/danger”, Green Tick is “All Good”, the original Red Target I use to indicate where we need someone. Have no idea what that green squareish thing represents.

I would bin this as nice to have. Fixing the mini map so icons don’t stack would be a better use of time IMO. I agree the current map tools are hard to work, and almost impossible while being pressured. It would require more keybinds, and i think only a small set of people could use it effectivly.

  • “Qualifying” division below Bronze for all new players to Ranked

I think there needs to be a way to separate people who’s rating is not know from those who’s is, but not sure of a good way to do it. Maybe don’t penalize/reward people as much if they have high volitility people on their team.

  • Skill/Knowledge gating to access Ranked Arena

The community could really step up here to help improve peoples knowledge of the game. I don’t see it as something anet could fix with limited resources.

  • No class stacking. While I believe if daily achievements were removed from Ranked we would see a drop in class it does not address the abuse of FOTM classes, which as we know lead to unbalanced and unenjoyable matches.

I think better players will be able to more effectively deal with this either on their team, or an opponents. I wouldn’t complain if they got rid of it though. Matches against 2MM & 2ele teams aren’t fun if no one on your team can MOA.

Optional/QOL

  • Ability to save builds for easy swap pre-match

This should be manditory. It is very hard to do a major build change without making a mistake in the time it takes to start a match.

Her point pertained to middle of the pack, not the very top. Decay should combat the 10-0 people and force them to play more games (decay system could be better). My concern is someone doing that at the very end of the season.

It still applies in the middle of the pack. you will get punished for not carefully picking when to play and with whom.

Win ratio is not the metric used to track rating changes. Who you defeat or lose to is what matters.

You continue to earn rewards once you’re at your proper rating (you win about half your games), so there’s no disincentive to continue playing, as you claim. You can also learn to play better and move up. A visible way to track skill evolution is huge.

Your only valid point is the last one. DH has too low of a skill floor, so at lower skill levels, players do disproportionately well.

She has a point that you are not incentivized to play more matches. Someone can go 12-0 playing after midnight pacific time and be at the top of the leaderboards, vs someone that has played 60 plus matches against better competition. It is too easy to queue dodge and get a good rating. If you carefully pick when you play your matches you are likely to be a division higher than someone that just logs in and plays a bunch of matches every day.

That’s completely untrue. The professionals have played several thousand games and are, obviously, very skilled. Likewise, new players (having no experience), have played very few games and are low skilled. By suggesting there is no correlation you are saying experience doesn’t correlate to skill. I’ve never heard such an axiom. That’s ridiculous.

I would go as far as to say there is not only a correlation, but a causation. Show me someone who is good at anything without experience? You can’t have skill without it.

Do you think it is fair for the top 250 spots to be loaded with alt accounts? That makes a mockery of the whole thing. Look at position number one and two on the leaderboards. Another mockery.

I completely disagree about giving people who have played a lot of matches a built in advantage. That game mode is WvW. The game is similar to a skill based sport. Some people no matter how much they play won’t get very good. Take golf for example. There are lots of people that have played for years and are awful at it, where as you can take someone that has aptitude for it and they would be shooting better scores in a couple of months. The leaderboard should not be a grind based one.

I agree the top couple of spots look fishy. Having people on the top spots that have played 1/10th the matches that others have seems wrong. While they may be good players, something makes me think they are gaming the system to get the ranking they have.

I think the final standings should be based off of a final placement and tournament using only the top 250/500/1000 (pick a number) players. Only allow accounts that are tied to a phone number to participate and only one per number.

Top 250 requirement

I think we all agree it is kind of silly that some players get placed at say 2k rating and play 1 time every days to maintain their position. They don’t exactly participate in the season, it leads to half dead top 250 which leads to lopsided matches because matchmaking can’t find better players so you have 1700 team vs 2100 teams.

Suggestion (stolen from OW): you should play at least 100 matches in the season to quality for top 250. Also i think players should be placed maximum at 1750 rating after placement so if they want to be legend, they would have to play for it instead of afking all season.

Agree on rating cap on placements and matches played. Someone should not be able to queue dodge snipe a top rating.

With the match making, they have to do something to give the top players decent queue times so they can do a stream that isn’t them attacking practice dummies for an hour before their queue pops. Maybe at the end of the season have a playoff where only the top 500 players can queue for matches to sort out who really belongs in the top 250.

I’ve just had two matches in a row where someones afk during the match where one was close and we lost due to the person going afk during the last minute of the match and the other where the warrior just was afk after everyone died first time.

This is pretty much what brings me down in PVP as you have no control over it and once you lose that one person you’re pretty much screwed the rest of the match. There isn’t any coming back from losing a player because they sign up and choosed to go do something else than play the thing they queued. While you can report idle players it doesn’t do anything because it doesn’t help you what so ever to do so because you already lost.

If you think this is because it’s bronze well it’s not it’s silver league which makes it even worst. I hate PVP so much for this reason I really don’t much care to play it and find PVP to be one of the funniest jokes Anet has gave us year after year.

Sure, I could choose not to play the content however than I would be missing out on rewards etc that you can’t get anywhere else. If you’re thinking well you shouldn’t do it for the rewards well maybe so but that’s my choice.

The other thing I dislike but can slightly with stand is the fact you’ll see multi classes within the same battle I’ll end up fighting three necros which will melt the team because no one has enough condi cleanse or getting three theifs, rangers or something on our team which may be good will cause a lost because it’s not good for team fights. The only upside it can happen to the other team too however that’s awful to hope.

Edit: Yep, Wonderful PVP played a match with a teamate not wearing any armor etc…. yet because he chooses to troll or fix the match everyone else suffers for that choice.

Edit Again: Then get in another match with the kittening same person kitten you anet.

Sounds like you should be lobbying for harsher punishments for afks and trolls. But every time someone makes a post there is a long line of people saying that people should afk so they can save 1-2 minutes of their life and get in the next queue faster. Once again it isn’t the math behind the system that is the problem it is the behavior of the community.

You assume a uniform distribution, but its probably more of a Gaussian distribution (bell shaped) with most players in gold/low platinum which don’t appear on the leaderboard.

Yes the OP assumption is bad, but have you ever been to the PvP areana? I would say 70% of the badges are bronze. The top 250 is tier 2 plat and up. It is a back end loaded distribution with a long tail. Would be interesting to see what the percentages are for the different tiers.

Care to elaborate on your methods? How exactly did you reach this number? In what way are they “overperforming”? (damage, cc, sustain, boon uptime, everything?)

I don’t think ranger or druid themselves have too much damage; but rather smokescale (which every ranger runs) has far too much damage attached to it for a “tank” pet.

It’s sad that a “pro” player would go take an account go through bronze and mock new players. I watched the stream and tbh it looked like he was just pumping his ego, trash talking to bronze players. Now those players will see that they’ve been smashed 5v4 and sure they will think “oh yeah this matchmaking is crap” when in fact you have sad people like him boosting their own ego by “smurfing”.

If they watched it they could see why they were losing. Attacking through confusion, having a signet to make attacks unlockable and not using it etc…

Personally my MMR has gone up and down since the season started. The total range is greater than 200 MMR points so I don’t see what the issue is. I’d say the accuracy of the system isn’t’ any better than +- 50 to 80.

The soft MMR reset is good. You shouldn’t get the same credit for beating bad players as good players at the start of the season. Anet already has a good base for what people should be rated at.

The only thing that seems screwed up is at the top. You can queue dodge and place in the top spots without playing the top players. Wouldn’t be surprised if there is some match manipulation going on as well.

There should be an MMR cap that you can place into. The only way to get above or below the cap is to play more matches and either lose or win.

  • 5) PvP needs more reporting functions for AFKers and trolls. If someone is intentionally throwing Ranked matches, they shouldn’t be allowed to play anymore.

Only one I agree with. Unfortunately, this is hard to automate in a way that won’t get abused, and it can only really be done by investing a bunch of time into investigating the matches. All other competitive games have the same issue.

No way. If everyone started off on equal ranking, then the start of each season would be a complete nightmare. I started off in Silver 3, and since then have bounced around a bit, clawed my way up into gold 1 ankitten ow progressing into gold 2. I may be able to make into platinum, I may be stuck in gold. But the matches I’ve had and the journey getting there has been great and challenging. As for everyone seeing your mmr badge, just un check “show badge”. Problem solved, now nobody knows your mmr unless you tell them.

Or if they just ADD YOU TO FRIENDS LIST… LOL

And as you were saying it would be a complete nightmare if you had to start off on FAIR EQUAL GROUNDS with everyone else. You pretty much indirectly said the systems is a kitten mess without even saying it. If its a nightmare for some, then everyone should have to go though it.

You don’t just join the airforce or the army, or the marines and skip basic training. Everyone regardless of their skill/intelligence/physical ability must go through the same right of passage.

The way the system is now. you just do well in placement on your DH or Warr, then smooth sailing from there.

Its like playing the game Life, and starting at the end.. DID YOU REALLY PLAY THE GAME. look the the top 10 guys, THEY HAVE HARDLY ANY GAMES PLAYED!!!!! That’s not living, that just instantly jumping to early retirement. IDK why anet is catering to these guys, like they know them on a personal basis or something.

Your post makes no sense. Does the military reset everyone’s rank every year and make them go through basic training? Whether you choose to believe it or not they got there based on past performance plus qualifying. They have played thousands of matches, and the people I see at the top spots on the leaderboard have played plenty of matches this year.

ALL players, not just the " new" ones should have startet out with 1200 rating.
That would have solved at lot of the current issues with divisionplacement.
The good ones would climb, the bad ones would fall.

The reason you don’t want this is the good players, the ones with 6alts in the top 100 will not only rek you at the start of the season, but they will be bringing in alts through out the season and completly destroying players. The faster the match maker can separate the good from the bad, the better.

If he/she is constantly winning 50% of the games he/she plays at silver, then yeah he/she is most likely better at winning games than someone who is winning 50% at bronze.

HOWEVER. A new player who starts at silver most likely will be outskilled by his/her opponents and most likely will be losing more than winning until he/she loses so much rating that he/she gets to play against same skill level.

so I would have been better off if I created a brand new account?

Probably not. It depends on the quality of the teams you beat and the order of your wins. If you won most of your early matches it would have put you against better players for the next match. Where as if you lose most of your early matches it will adjust you downward. If you end up splitting matches you will end up pretty close to where you started the rating.

Alt accounts plaguing the NA ladder

keep in mind if they don’t rank their alt accounts where they belong they will be trolling the lower tier players. That probably was one of the main reasons for people griefing under the old system where you had to play x amount of matches to get out of sapphire/ruby/diamond.

Because people have too much time and are stupid? What kind of people do you know?

Maybe they want to try alternate builds without lowering their rank on their main account. I don’t see the issue with people playing more than one account or ranking them properly. If you have enough rating points for a top rank now, you will end up losing ranks by the end of the season if you don’t advance it because some of the people below you will maintain a steady increase in MMR and pass you. You already see it with the top MMR players. The #1 slot now has more points than it took to get it on day 1. Playing multiple accounts is only going to lessen the amount of total points a player can get as the season wears on…provided they are good enough to have a top rank.

Aside from the vague ‘How to figure out individual skill’ dilemma we have right now, the other perspective I’ve thought of is, to what extent that skill should affect your rating.

Saiyan brought up something like a flat number, but the rating gains and losses change at the extremes. You get higher in ranking and suddenly you are earning a few points per win, and lose 3x at least if you lose. Not that I think that’s too far off, if you are rank 1 you shouldn’t be able to pull away from those below you that easily

So, I am going to assume Arenanet can eventually figure out a decent way to measure player skill, and determine the best players on each side of the match in a close game. Neat, so how do you reward the ‘losing player’ for trying his/her hardest for just barely losing by say a tick?

What about having the loss take a percentage hit? You performed the best of the losers in a 450-500 game, so maybe instead of losing 10 rating you lose 7? And that consolation applies to just you? I think a percent-based rating adjust might be best here.

If we can get the rating system to be a bit more complicated, such as promoting players who are losing to play their hardest to win in order to not take the biggest hit to their rating, that might promote better games.

Does anyone disagree? And yes, I do realize I dodged the whole ‘Player Skill’ measure here, with the changes to ‘Best Stats’ I assume Arenanet has concept going forward with this.

I would like to see more stats preferably available through an API. However, I disagree that individual stats should buff people that lose matches. People would just exploit this and run builds that generate the best individual stats. If you want to reward losing teams do it by point differential. Losing 500-495 won’t lose as much rating as 500-50. The better players will on average be able to maintain a tighter point differential than others. That will reward people for playing to help the team vs. playing to inflate their personal stats at the expense of the team.

The amount of damage has very little correlation to how effective you are. A good player doing spike damage will kill a lot of people with 200k damage. Whereas an aoe spamming group fighter may rack up 750k damage and not provide anything more than moderate pressure to the people in the team fight. The simplicity of the current system is what makes it good. You can try to put together metrics, but at the end of the day the only stat that matters is which team has the most points at the end. People that are the best at maximizing their teams chance to win will rise to the top.

The only thing I would like to see is more access to people’s MMR and stats, and me not losing as much xD
