honestly i wish more classes could be like the warrior, diverse and satisfying to play.

this is the build i run in WvW, usually i’m just so tanky that thieves don’t even bother with me. on the rare occasion that i get singled out by a thief they either beat themselves up with the retaliation or spend so long trying to kill me that help arrives.

i think the longest fight i ever had with a single thief who i just would not let go was a little over 5 minutes. it started out with him trying to gank me, and ended with me running him down into the centaur camp and finally stomping him.

pistol dagger thieves are the worst however, but a good wall of reflection usually makes that problem solve itself.

there are actually a lot of aoe blinds in this game, there are also large fields that not only aoe blind, but keep you blind for the duration of your stay in them. there are also spamable fields that do aoe blind.

somehow though it hasn’t proven to be that big of a problem.

they are both pretty good, seeing as how we are in the warrior section i have to go with warrior however.

in pve they are lots of fun, you can roll entire waves of enemies, almost always loved and often considered essential in dungeons. great access to offensive boons and lots of build variety.

for WvW however i would have to go with guardian every time. even though warriors are fantastically mobile and hit insanely hard in WvW guardians are better because of all of the sustain they possess and combat tricks they can do.

if you want a frustrating time in WvW with bright shining moments of victory then go with warrior, if you want a nice relaxing time with clear ways to help your group then go with guardian.

i don’t know if you can really call fury a rare boon, every class except guardian and mesmer has easy access to it.

also while we do have an aoe bleed on weapon swap, that doesn’t really do you much good if you swap to a ranged weapon. the bleed on hit effect would be a lot less powerful then the sigil of geomancy but a lot more useful for ranged condition builds.

thought of another one, sigil of kleptomancy – steal a boon from a target near you.

the orb of light is a pretty decent single target nuke for me, usually hitting just under 3k on targets in WvW. my problem is it is the only higher hitting skill on the staff, having to closely monitor when the detonate disappears so it can go on cooldown and not go on a 8 second cooldown is a little annoying for me.

i thought it would be nice to be able to just chuck orbs at will without having to worry about cooldown management, the skill glitching or missing a detonation.

i’ve always imagined the necromancer as kind of a more down to earth, practical magic user. also the necro really lacks a good ranged direct damage weapon

that said a necromancer should use a more practical kind of weapon.
Rifle:
1- miniball; fires a shot that does more damage the more conditions the target has
2- chemical rounds; fires two shots that each convert a boon into a condition
3- ? ; channel an attack to build life force and fire a shot that knocks the target down
4- into shadows; roll backwards leaving behind a chillblains mark and removing crippled and immobilize
5- life link; send up to three of your conditions to your opponent

Fiorrello.8126

i main a warrior so it might help you to get a little counter perspective on necro versus warrior.

i don’t like fighting necro’s because usually if you are going to lose then you know it 15 seconds before it actually happens. when a necro is panicking then they are easy kills, when they are calm and start kiting that is when you need to get out of there because they can shut you down, hard.

staff necro’s don’t worry me because you can dodge through the marks triggering them and not taking any damage, but scepter necro’s can perma cripple and bleed you down and there is nothing you can do about it. yeah we have a utility to reduce condition damage we take, but it only reduces the original duration of the condition, so any extra duration still gets through.

blindness wells make melee warriors free kills. if you can trap him in a small spot like the dredge caves, then the blindness well will destroy a warrior.

if you can remain calm and not get overly worried about warriors hitting you for 6k and just start kiting them then a necro can almost always out sustain a warrior. ususally warrior has only one big heal and one condition cleanse, once that is used up they either need to flee or die. so its a good thing necros don’t have access to chill, cripple and a speed boost.

Is Guardian worth rolling for WvW?

in Guardian

Posted by: Fiorrello.8126

Fiorrello.8126

while i disagree with you on warrior being the most boring class in the game that is outside of this discussion.

guardians are completely viable and worth rolling if only for WvW. like i said they seem to be made for WvW.

you can speed yaks along, buff your allies and heal yourself with a trait all on one weapon. with proper trait allotment the guardian isn’t all that slower then any other class and provides a massive amount of utility to any group you play with.

with [stand your ground] you can make sure that enemies get stomped, with [wall of reflection] you can turn the tides of open field battles and protect allies firing cannons. using the greatswords pull you can group entire camps together to be aoe’d to death speeding your captures. group retaliation makes aoe heavy classes and fast attacking classes think twice about attacking your buddies. guardian has some of the best sustain in the game and can create multiple fields to stop enemies in their tracks.

Is Guardian worth rolling for WvW?

in Guardian

Posted by: Fiorrello.8126

Fiorrello.8126

i play both a warrior and a guardian in wvw

warrior is far more fun and interesting, but also a lot riskier then guardian. you say the combat is repetitive, i would say you have that mixed up. guardian feels like WvW on easy mode while warrior feels like WvW on heroic.

warrior has so many viable builds and a lot of insane none viable builds that are just for fun. while guardian only really has like, 3 viable builds. and of those builds they all use mostly the same trait setup.

guardian is definitely worth it to run in WvW, the class seems like it was built for WvW and has a lot to offer if you use it right. the only frustrating thing i find about guardian in WvW is it feels like you move really slow, but compared to ranger/thief/warrior you do.

the shield on the guardian is just not satisfying, the buff on it is good and all but nothing beats [shield bash]ing someone. something about making the solid connect and stopping them in their tracks. that alone makes me love the shield as an offhand weapon.

can we please change blinding fields?

in Suggestions

Posted by: Fiorrello.8126

Fiorrello.8126

blind has become a condition that is just far far to powerful to exist.
i’m fine with how it works in regards to making your next attack miss, but being able to completely shut down a melee attacker with the insanely too frequent application of blind on top the rework to make it much much harder to clear has pushed this condition past its bearable limit.

it needs to either have a cooldown imposed on it so you can’t just be perma blinded, or remove blinding fields so you have to be smarter in your use of targeted blinds.

an easy (and shallow) retort would be “simply get out of the field” but that doesn’t really cover it does it, a blind field is hard area denial, something that no class truly had in the beginning of this game. the closest would be engineer with turrets, stay in range of the turrets and die, except the turrets where never like that, they are entirely ignorable and so fragile as to not survive a strong coughing fit.

simply put, blind fields are far to powerful to exist in any kind of pvp style play. they let you dictate the actions of your opponent completely, get out of the field or i will kill you, as opposed to letting your opponent make cutting choices.
and example of a good field would be a fire field, you can choose to stay in it and take damage, but the opportunity granted by the positioning could very well be far more valuable to move and so both parties make a valid decision by their actions.

elementalist would be awesome as a spellsword

necro could definitely use a good direct damage weapon, because right now the axe just sucks. my proposal is a rifle for some van-helsing style gameplay.

try this.

0-10-30-10-20

grab the merciless hammer and the desperate power traits.

instant 45% increased damage on your burst skill when counter attacking thieves. on the warrior when you use an attack that has a bonus when they suffer a certain condition (weakness, stun) if the attack gives that condition then the bonus will proc before the condition does.

so 10 points into arms with the unsuspecting foe trait will allow your earthshaker to have an additional 50% crit chance. same thing holds true for shield bash and skull crack.

this setup using similar gear has allowed me to two shot thieves in WvW.

Rampage cooldown reduction wasn't enough.

in Warrior

Posted by: Fiorrello.8126

Fiorrello.8126

I’ve got a few ideas to make rampage more fun!

1. Allow all skills while in Rampage form (Currently it locks 6-9, wtf?)
2. Change Rampage to consume Adrenaline instead of having a set duration. Every second in rampage consumes 1 strike of adrenaline.
3. Gain Stability and Protection while in Rampage form.
4. Add in a Burst skill that produces a powerful effect (which would use adren, and end the transform)
5. 60 Second CD, which begins after the transformation ends.

i like it.

i don’t know about making it last that long though, each bar of adrenaline is 10 strikes, that would be a 30 second of rampage at max adrenaline if you used it and didn’t hit anything. with the grandmaster trait furious this would equate to perma stability and protection while in battle.

how about a flat 60 second cooldown for 15 seconds of rampage. you get protection and stability, the health and damage increase and would get to keep your weapon skills.

this means that you become a near unstoppable weapon of death for a little while, but you don’t suddenly become Balthazar in PvE and PvP

Survey: Burst Skills Recharge Rate +1%

in Warrior

Posted by: Fiorrello.8126

Fiorrello.8126

i suggested once that the burst unique attribute that warriors would have tied to the discipline line be.

-0.2 seconds off of weapon skills recharge on burst.

so at 15 points in discipline every time you use the burst skill all your cooldowns for your weapon would recharge 3 seconds faster. if you are built to burst like crazy and specked fully into discipline then at the absolute fastest you could remove 6 seconds off of weapon skill recharge every 8 seconds.

practically what this would do is on the rifle you could open with [volley] into say [brutal shot] then immediately use [kill shot]. the [kill shot] would lower your cooldowns by 3 seconds and you would have [volley] available again.

or you could walk up with the mace using [counter blow], and then [hilt bash] them. do a couple of auto attacks and [skull crack], at this point your [counter blow] would be available again.

right now the discipline trait line is kind of lack luster in regards to the stat bonuses it gives you. the increase in burst damage is so incredibly low that it is ignore-able and a lot of people have been calling for it to be changed.

well i think it would look pretty good like this

Discipline- +%critical damage , -0.2 seconds cooldown on burst

what this would mean is, whenever you use your burst skill then the cooldown on your weapon skills would be decreased by 1 second for every 5 points you spent into the discipline trait line.

so at the absolute fastest at 30 points deep into the discipline trait line then you could reduce the cool downs on your skills by 6 seconds every 10 seconds. this means that if you are a rifle warrior and you open you attack with the skill [volley] then you could immediately use [kill shot] and have volley available to you afterwards.

some warriors like the hammer, personally i think a traited longbow is essential for WvW, but that’s just me.

my advice is unless you are going bullrush—> frenzy —> hundred blades, then you should skip the greatsword in WvW.

as for your original question, sword/warhorn or sword/shield is probably one of your best secondary weapon sets. if you utilize the greatsword for mobility properly then rifle or longbow are a fine choice as well. but if greatsword is going to be the weapon you use more then any other weapon then sword/warhorn for the mobility is what you want.

since mobility is how Warriors stay alive in WvW.

Do Warriors Have Bunker Builds?

warriors do damage, we have some incredible utilities, but damage is our main thing.

How do I kill a guardian?

in Warrior

Posted by: Fiorrello.8126

Fiorrello.8126

i’ve actually had a lot success killing guardians using a condition warrior build, once you get a few conditions on them they like to blow their cleanses immediately.

what i do is peck them a bit at range with the longbow, once you get burning or immobilize on them they panic and pop a few cleanses. guardians like to get in close, so once they do switch to your sword and whatever offhand you prefer. now you just wait a bit, they will use another cleanse to take care of the bleeding, but they might get unlucky and lose the cripple or vulnerability instead.

when they have about 12 or more stacks of bleed their small health pool will start to shrink fast, that’s when they try to run away and heal.

you can either switch back to longbow and auto attack then [pin down] or [savage leap] into [flurry]. (auto attack first before using [pin down], this clears aegis and makes sure that they are in range for the [pin down])

either way, if a guardian is at half health or less and you can catch them with flurry it is usually game over for them unless they can pop a condition cleanse. so make sure to bait it out and keep a cool head.

What Do Rangers Bring to WvW?

in Ranger

Posted by: Fiorrello.8126

Fiorrello.8126

i run a hybrid beast master build. in WvW i’ve found that i’m very good at solo or duoing camps.

also quaggen island is a pretty important target that the ranger is capable of soloing.

grayback is correct when he says that rangers really shine in small man groups. if you are going to be roaming i would almost always prefer to have my roaming buddy be a ranger.

yak slapping is pretty easy on a ranger as well, you can set your pet to attack, while keeping watch for ganks from a distance, a little bit of short bow support and you can drop a yak as fast as a warrior. the difference is that unlike face tanking the yak like a warrior or thief does you can remain a little more aloof and avoid getting ganked if its protected. or you can set your pet to distract the guards and kill the yak yourself.

a tanky attrition build in WvW usually consists of a warrior condition build.

after hudreds of hours of playing Warrior in WvW i’ve found that we can’t really go tanky. if you have 3500 armor or 2500 armor you will still die just as fast. you can still increase your survivablility dramatically however by what weapon sets you use.

let me show you .http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/warrior/?8.0|3.1h.h5|c.1o.h5.g.1h.h16|1o.7g.1o.7g.1o.7g.1o.7g.1o.712.1o.712|1b.62.1b.62.1b.62.1b.62.1b.62.1b.62|a1.k38.k18.k49.0|0.0|0.0.0.0.0|e this is the build i run for my condition warrior. it has a lot in common with what you are used to as a necro, the big difference is that you are only really spreading three conditions; bleed, burning and immobilize. unlike necro the bleeds last a really really long time so you can stack them up easier.

if you want to run a more spike damage based warrior there are plenty of options, but in my experience you are generally forced into using either axe/shield, longbow or rifle as your main weapon with either sword/warhorn, sword/shield or greatsword as your offhand for movement so that you don’t get caught in one spot and killed.

warrior has a lot of options for leaps, and you are going to want to get comfortable using them since in WvW they are your main means of staying alive.
