I’d go with Maguma and Ring of Fire. Save Crystal Desert for when an Elona expansion is about to come out and it can lead into the expansion.

I’m fine with the current story-line, I’d just like to see the Story-line paths of all the Dungeons added into the story. Would make it more like the Missions from GW. And you can’t advance until you complete them. I’d even go so far as locking any zone that is a higher level than the story-line you are on.

I’d rather see Anet open up the rest of the current map before giving us Elona or Cantha. And I expect when they do gives us and expansion, it’ll be Elona and that’ll be after the Crystal Desert is opened up giving us a land bridge there.

The Paragon is the only “Heavy” armor class left from GW that isn’t in. I’d love to see a Paragon that wields both spear and scythe. As for race, I’m sure it’ll be Tengu since they already have an area just outside Lion’s Arch.

3. Multiple skills per weapon(not just 5 per)
4. Build saving
5. UW/FoW

One of the main points Anet made when promoting GW2 was the “Holy Trinity” becoming obsolete. Every profession could tank, heal, support, or DPS. What we have now is all professions “zerging”. There is no support or tanking going on, just everyone DPSing to kill the mobs as quick as possible.

I think this has more to do with the mob AI than the way the professions are setup tho. We all can be any of those roles(Anet did that right). The problem is stupid mobs and bosses. I think they are on the correct track tho with how the redid Tequatl.

I will agree that the skill system does need a revamp tho. Having the same 5 skills ONLY per weapon is making creating new and inventive builds stagnant. Yes we can use 2 different weapons but that still limits things. In GW we had 50-100 different builds that were viable in PvE and PvP in Prophecies alone. Adding 5 more skills per weapon would up the build diversity (not to mention character diversity) 10 fold.

My biggest problem with the story is that in GW you had Missions to do that had something to do with the story. Missions also made you group up and get to know the other players. Now the whole story is just you(maybe some friends/guildies). And the stories in GW were epic. If they took the Dungeons and made them like the GW missions, for storyline at least, then it’d be a lot better.

…with the Living Story, it’s clear they completely abandoned most of their core principles.

I think what you have to realise is that they abandonned most of these principles upon launch. Check out the GW2 manifesto vid, my fave quote from that is in my sig.

Funniest thing about that quote is Colin left Anet because of what we’er complaining about, GRIND.

The game could use actual Guild Wars. GvG and HA were the top 2 features in GW and they are nonexistent in GW2.

No, supposed to be legendaries, was still half-asleep when posted I guess, lol.

And It would be no different than when Anet added the “Green” items in GW. Everyone was complaining that the best skins were gotten from UW and FoW so Anet gave us the Sorrow’s Furnace update. It had bosses that had a chance to drop a “Green” weapon that had perfect stats and a new skin. No reason that they couldn’t implement a similar technique with the current World Bosses we have and would allow them to create new Legendaries as they add more areas and World Bosses like they did with the expansions in GW.

It wasn’t until GW2 was announced that there was a “Real” grind in GW and even then you got most of the achievements just by playing the game and visiting new zones.

I’d rather have a few skills done well that are all used frequnetly than a screen cluttered with ones that I will never, ever use.

We’re not asking for WoW type UI. We want the same 10 skill slots just a better choice in our skills for more diversity in builds.

Every profession has several weapons, a plethora of utility skills and each has a unique class mechanic.

Some of it could use tweaking, sure, but to say there’s no diversity is being purposely dishonest.

Yes each class has several weapons with 5 skills each and then your 3-4 heals, your utilities, and finally your 6-7 Elites. The problem is say I’d like to use a Shortbow skill on my Longbow Ranger, I can’t. In GW I could use any Ranger skill I wanted with any bow whether it was the Horn-bow, Flat-bow, Long-bow, Short-bow, or Recurve- bow. The only difference was the distance it could shoot and the arc of the shot. In GW2 I’m stuck with the same 5 skills for each weapon.

Sorry, I ninja edited on you

I have only really played ele and guardian (to 61) but both of them seem to have several viable weapon/trait combos, and guardians in particular have awesome utilities. Would I like more? Sure! Though I’d rather have more utilities/elites than weapon skills personally.

Still doesn’t mean that I feel GW2 is more rigid. I guess it just depends on what you focus on

Hehe, NP I’ve done it too, lol

Ele does have a much better diversity than say a Ranger does. The biggest thing we have is which crappy weapon to use and which pet to watch run around and not respond to our commands. And I do know that Guardians have more diversity also. I run a Hammer/Great-sword build and the “Meta” is GS/Sword.

I ran whatever the hell I wanted too when I soloed. The community was still very rigid and the design of some encounters really DID make some skills pretty much mandatory (Frozen Ground comes to mind in … crap … don’t remember the dungeon, Duncan the Black area though). Problem with GW1 is that if you tried something and it failed, you started over because you were stuck. Your group couldn’t replace you, you couldn’t switch any skills.

It’s no wonder people wanted to stick to tried and true in fear of wasting their time. It was partly the community’s fault, yes, but partly Anet’s fault for the way it was designed.

Thing is, while H/Hing stuff was often EASIER, I’m one of those types who enjoys grouping in general. Thus yes, there is pressure to conform. EDIT: I agree, however that unexpected builds were fun in PvP. My Spirit’s Strength rit was a blast, blendering people with swords.

And that’s is one of the biggest problems with GW2, you only have 1 build(2 for some classes) per game-type and that’s it. What everyone is asking for is weapon skills that can be interchanged how we want them so we have more diversity in the builds. Hell I’d be happy with 10 skills per weapon to choose from. At least then I’d have a choice as to how I was able to setup my toon.

Did we play the same GW1? Groups pretty much demanded cookie cutter setups for dungeons there, though at least there were a few different cookie cutters that might need to be used depending on the mobs you faced (IE, no Searing Flames against destroyers — thank god, most boring ele build ever).

I feel much more flexible here tbh.

If you SC’d, then yea, there were pretty much cookie cutter builds used to make the run as fast as possible. Hence the name Speed Clear.

If you went in with heroes or friends, you had way more options just by taking a different profession.

More flexible how? 5 skills are chosen for you. The 6th which is a heal. That leaves 4 slots that provide maybe 5 skills that are useful in situations outside of PvP and maybe 3 elites that are considerable.

It wasn’t just speed clears, it was ANY pug dungeon group. For soloing with heroes/henchmen I ran one of the the same two team setups (depending on whether doing HM with party of 8 or party of 4) all but 95% of the time, because it just wasn’t necessary to switch.

GW2 feels more flexible because I can swap weapons/utilities on the fly and there’s no PvX wiki where people feel like if it’s not one of those builds, it’s garbage. That’s just me, though. Well, that and I love getting to use all attunements at once now.

I played GW from Prophecies through EotN and I never felt the need to use a cookie-cutter build in any area including HA were they were most prevalent. I ran what I wanted and if the group I was in didn’t like it they were to to “F!@# off”. I wasn’t changing my build unless I felt it necessary for a certain boss or if I was getting kitten handed to me in HA. Hell I used to run a R/P beast master build in RA all the time. The other team would think I was a normal BM and then my wolf would two shot them while I stayed back and healed us.

The thing with GW was that there were multiple builds(even in just Prophecies) that were viable in each setting(PvE, GvG, HA, Arenas, UW, FoW,, ect). In GW2 you have 1 maybe 2 builds that are viable in each type of play. If they would give us more skills than the 5 we are regulated to per weapon then the builds would become much more diverse and thus make things more interesting.

They should change the name of the game to build wars because that’s what it is. 9/10 fights, the results are determined by builds and not by skill. I don’t understand at all why the game has taken this direction given how much Sharp supposedly likes counter play when he talks about all this on SoTG.

No the original GW was Build Wars. There were so many different builds that were viable that Anet took to changing the skills every month to keep things “fresh”.

They keep saying they wont be an expansion, but I am pretty sure NCsoft (and wisely) force them to make an expansion. To me, an expansion is away to reset the game and try and get back some of the people that might not be paying attention.

NCsoft is the reason we have all the garbage crap in the game, like the Gem store, RNG and the like, if NCsoft has it’s way we may never see an expansion, It’s ANET that would do the deed and release one, but, since NCsoft is pulling the strings, again, we may not

Ncsoft is also the reason they guild wars 1 and 2 were MADE and Release, so what’s your point. Most companies wouldn’t have taken the risk for gw1 and if gw1 wasn’t made 2 wouldn’t be made. So ultimately, your point is moot and is spoken out of ignorance for reality. If you want to see a real cash shop go play Swtor.

unlike you I have no beef with Ncsoft or the cash shop. See the difference between YOU and ME is that I am not affected by any of the RNG crap nor do I care if it affects everyone.

Yes NCSoft is the reason these two games were funded and published. What you need to remember is that NCSoft was just the PUBLISHER of GW. Meaning they had NO say in the content or how the game was run. Looks like they decided to take a bigger hand in the developement of GW2 tho, hence the Gem Store, Gear Progression, ect.

Bigger numbers doesn’t make deep character progression, since it’s one-dimensional. Numbers go up, and that’s it.

Progressing your character so they have more tools (therefore options) makes for deep character progression. I could also argue progression in the form of being part of the game world (gaining favour, rising up the ranks ect) has more depth, depending on how it’s done.

So what instead do you propose? Getting yet another backpack every 2 weeks? Achievement points? More fluff?

See the bolded.

To expand a bit:

Personal Character Growth

  • Skills (inc. swappable weapon skills)
  • Skill Customisation (Scrap the passive traits [+dmg, -cooldown] and add them as options to attach to skills with a clause. So, for example, you have the skill, you then select the clause [for example, if bleeding] and then you select the effect if you meet the clause [for example, deals 20% extra damage], so the entire skill description would be [Deals X damage. If the target is bleeding, then this skill deals 20% extra damage]. Limiting what effects you can have with certain clauses, as well as what skills can be customised, would aid balancing while creating more viable choices.)
  • Traits
  • Traitline expansion (i.e. a fourth Trait slot that you earn in a task related to that traitline. Doesn’t even need to increase stats)
  • Trait Points (through tasks, not simply leveling, much like the extra attribute points in GW1)

Granted, AI and mob variety would have to be developed to make this remotely useful

Character progression within the game world

  • A missed opportunity was rising in the ranks of your Order. Randomly assigned Order Missions, doing events / dungeons related to your Order ect.
  • Gaining favour in areas to reduce waypoint costs, merchant costs ect.

You forgot Elite skill capping instead of just unlocking them

This is what Anet did with the release the first big update in GW with the Stome Summit Dwarves. They had each boss that could drop a Green item. The greens were "Perfect"weapons with new skins. And when Anet released Factions, they made all the armor the same stats with new skins that related to the campaign(Oriental looks for Cantha and Tribal looks for Elona). If Anet were to do this for new items then I’d be fine, but having to get new gear every 6-9 months for BiS is just crap and against everything they said.

To ProxyDamage:

I can’t agree with you more. The main reason I got GW2 was because I’m also a GW veteran. I was looking forward to GW but with an Open world. Instead I got skill restrictions on weapons, Zergs, Zergs, and more Zergs, No GvG or Hero’s Ascent, A class mechanic that is total BS(ranger here too), oh and did I mention the Zergs.

To go along with all this now we have the gear-creap as I lilke to call it. You don’t have to get an Ascended weapon to do all the stuff in GW2 but it sure helps. It’s just the start of the gear treadmill. Just wait till they release an expansion and raise the level cap and this all starts over again.

Anet did it right with GW, 20 was cap and when they added Greens, they were just different skins that were harder to get to drop. Hell to this day the #1 armor in GW is still Obsidian and it was in at the start. When they released Factions they kept the level cap at 20 and even made it easier to reach, think it took me 8 hrs with my Assassin. They realized that that was too quick and lengthened it with the release of Nightfall. And never did they release weapons or armor that was any better than what was tops in Prophecies.

If Anet goes the way of the treadmill then I guess I may as well go back to SWToR since it’s a universe I’ve loved since 1976.

I don’t think there’s anything that needs to be done. Anet gave us the gear progression from the start with Legendary being top tier. Now we get Ascended gear that is supposed to be easier to get and have same stats as Legendary. No problem there to me.

It’s no different than when they added the Greens in the first big update for GW. They were just easier to get max stat skins that looked cool. There was still the Obsidian Armor for the “elitists” to get from UW and FoW which is what I see the Legendary Weapons being in GW2.

You seem to be forgetting the important difference with greens and Obsidian armor in GW and Legendaries at launch for GW2: they were no better than other options. They had the same stats as the top-tier regular equipment, just they looked different.
This is not the case with ascended.

Correct, but as I said, Anet told us the gear progression from the start with Legendary being the top tier. All Ascended gear is is Legendary Light, same stats, different look and easier to get.

The biggest complaint those of us that are GW vets have is that the new armor not only has a new LOOK but also better STATS. When Anet released Factions the new armor didn’t have any better stats than the armor we could get in Prophecies, it just required different materials for the new look. The “top” armor in GW all the way through EotN was Obsidian armor. The reason for this was not because if better stats but because it was the hardest to make. You had to farm UW for Ectos and then you had to run FoW to go to the place to craft it. As said before, I never got any Obsidian Armor on any of my Toons and I played all the way through Eotn.

Hopefully Lgendary Gear will be like the Obsidian Armor in GW; New look same stats as Ascended gear just harder to get the Mats for and to create.

I never said I wanted things for free. In GW you still had to work to get a certain look for your armor and weapons. But all the Lvl 20 armor and weapons were identical in stats just different looking. And 90% of Cantha was LvL 20 areas and 60% of Elona was lvl 20 making most of those games End-Game.

There’s nothing saying you won’t have to work for things, just that the stats are the same. Hell, I STILL don’t have any Obsidian Armor on any of my 8 toons in GW because you needed a good 8-man group to do both UW and FoW to farm the mats. That doesn’t mean that I didn’t have fun in GW, just that I didn’t have ALL the looks.

What exactly is the attraction of having a second job you have to pay for?

In fact, isn’t this the biggest promise Guild Wars 2 rode into the spotlight on its shiny white stallion? That it wouldn’t be like other MMOs?That it wouldn’t be a grind? That it wouldn’t be “work”? That it would be simply “fun”?

A-Net said that GW2 was going to exactly like GW when it came to gear grind – NONE. With the addition of the Ascended gear/items they broke that promise. I played GW from release all the way through EotN and never once did I have to worry about gear grind. The only thing that was different when it came to armors were how they looked. Just like it was with the Dungeon Armors at GW2 release.

I’d say one of the reasons people related more to the GW1 story arcs was because you had the Missions to do as part of the story arcs. We don’t have that in GW2, we just have story instances and they can be done solo and only one time. If they’d made the Dungeons a Mandatory part of the storyline, then I think people would relate more to what is going on in each area; i.e Ascelon, Kryta, Maguma, etc.

To hard-core GW1 players(I’m not one of them), this game was a big let-down. You have to be blind not to see that. Nearly everyone I’ve talked to that was a GW1 vet has done one of 3 things: 1) left the game entirely, 2) only enjoy certain aspects of the game like W3 or Fractals, and 3) begrudgingly accepted the game because it’s visually stunning, free, and they still have friends here.

It seems to me, and I could be wrong here, that ANet made a key decision many years ago to try and cater to an older, more casual crowd at the expense of really challenging gameplay. Whether or not that is good or bad is largely personal opinion, but it’s a silly claim by ANet to state this game is a legitimate heir to Guild Wars.

I’m a GW vet and the biggest thing I miss from it was the build diversity that we had. My favorite build to run in RA was a R/P BM build with a Spear and shield. It always surprised people when my pet would tear their face off because the general thinking was “ignore the pet and kill the master”.

The plan is to milk the players of this game as long as possible for NCsoft’s future investments. IE Wildstar, content for Aion/Lineage, and hopefully at some point this year or early next year at the latest a GW2 expansion

Oh look, the whole crowd of malcontents are repeating the same thing over and over again. How…original. Do you guys rehearse this stuff.

Proof? No? I didn’t think so.

Well, if you were looking to discuss, we could do without the mocking hyperbole.

It makes good business sense to take funds from something that is already succeeding (monetarily) and pump it into other potential ventures.

No one knows what’s succeeding and what’s not succeeding, except NCsoft. We do know that so far, Guild Wars 2 is their second highest money maker. We don’t know how much it’s made since the last quarterly report though and we don’t know how much the gem store makes, so it’s all speculation.

Now if Guild Wars 2 turns out to be the most profitable product, then what? Since Wildstar hasn’t launched, no one knows how well it will do.

I mean they thought Blade and Soul would do a lot better than it did, but it didn’t really go anywhere. No guarantees in this industry.

At this point in time GW2 is funding Wildstar and also the first expansion for GW2.

What are Anet's plans for this game?

I would imagine that most of their team is working on an expansion. If not, I’d be highly surprised, since GW1 released its first xpac within 12 months of prophecies releasing, if I remember correctly.

Actually, the Stone Summit update was the first content update they did and that was a year after launch. A year after that they released Factions, the stand-alone/expansion to Prophecies(depending on if you linked them or not.)

What class do you find most fun?

I played all the professions in GW. My favorites from it; Ranger, Necro, and Mesmer, are nothing like they were in GW. I guess Ranger is the closest to what it was so it would probably be my favorite. Guardian is nice but reminds me of Paladin from WoW too much. Thief is ok but I preferred the Assassin mechanics of being able to jump in and out of the fight and the skill chains I could come up with, not ones that were determined for me.

I’d rather they do it like they did for GW. If you unlock it in PvE it’s automatically unlocked for you in PvP

There is no way GW2 offers anything remotely close to Rift in terms of Class
differentiation

The amount of specs available in Rift is absolutely silly. Oh, and viable builds only.

Not only did you have the “pure builds” you had all the hybrid ones as well.

I can actually name some of the “builds” off that were played back then on Mages

44 Necro
32 Necro/32 Warlock
32 Necro/32 Dom
44 Pyro/11 Necro (this was nerfed early on)
32 Storm Caller/32 Warlock
32 pyro/32 Warlock
51 Pyro
51 Stormcaller
32 Chloro/32 Dom
32 Dom/16 Chloro/16 PvP Soul
51 Archon
32 Pyro/32 Elementalist
32 Ele/32 Warlock

Thats all the ones i can think of off the top of my head only for Mage, there are more…

There are at several times that many builds available to just an Elementalist focussing on fire and dual daggers.

Multiply that by four elements…

Multiply that by the five weapon combination options…

and Elementalist alone has probably in the neighborhood of eighty to one hundred times as many builds as you list.

but I still never really got an idea of who he was, because he was always changing.

Isnt this pretty much possible in GW2 as well ? Switching from support to tank to DPS with little effort ?

OK that works for the Ele, now try doing that with the Ranger or necro. Oh, and viable builds only.

If GW2 was anything like Rift, I know I would NOT be playing it, and even less giving 20€ or more worth of gems per month to the developers.
There’s some things like housing and mounts that I hope to see in GW2 someday, but other things like raiding that would make me quit immediately.

I see this sentiment a lot on these forums and I just don’t understand it. Raiding is so anathema to some people that it can’t even exist in the game they’re playing.

I’m not into PvP, so what I do when I play an MMO that has PvP is to simply not do it and instead do things I like. PvP has had more of an affect on the games I’ve played because of balance than the other way around, yet it’s never made me quit.

The reason most people don’t like Raids is because they think that it’ll mean gear progression like WoW. That’s why I said I’d rather see UnderWorld and Fissure of Woe brought back like they were in GW. You go to UW to farm mats for Obsidian Armor and you go to FoW to craft your Obsidian armor. And Obsidian Armor wouldn’t have any better stats than the rest of the Armor you can get, just a different look and it’s harder to get.
