To everyone saying it’s impossible to put out permanent content on a quick timeline, BS. A-net had 6 months between releasing Sorrow’s Furnace and releasing Factions; both were PERMANENT content. They only took a year between Prophecies release and Sorrow’s Furnace and when they saw they could do that they said in 6 months we’d have Factions and they would be on a 6 month release schedule for new stand alone content(Nightfall)

Think I’m going to level the Warrior up to the choosing which Order to join(need the story for Char up to there for achievements). Will probably level the Thief to same level as War then switch back and forth every 10 levels or so. Thanks for advice

I have a Lvl2 Thief and a Lvl20 Warrior. Rolled both within minutes of each other and leveled the warrior to 20 threw crafting. I also have a Ranger, Guardian, and Mesmer all 80s. I picked up some Tomes of Knowledge that gives you a level per use. Now I can’t decide which to use the tomes on and level up first.

Something I’d like to see once they fix Rangers(Longbow/Shortbow) would be allowing us to pick our pet’s Elite based on it’s family. Something like if you choose a wolf you can pick from any of the dog elites. But you can’t have two pets from a family w/ the same Elite skill.

Reason GW1 players feel so bleh in my opinion

The traits reset costs only 3s, not much at all. And the only expensive part of everything you listed can be runes/sigils. Exotic armor/weapons are basically free and trinkets cost like nothing.

Trait reset is annoying from a user interface perspective. You have to manually choose your traits every time instead of having something like GW1’s build system where you can switch to saved builds on the fly. It’s preventing players to really experiment with build diversity because it’s not a seamless experience and requires too many hoops to jump through.

This is just one of the reasons it’s so much more difficult to try out new builds in-game. The other is you need multiple armor sets to test them effectively. In GW we had one set of armor for everything. I even used the same armor for both PvE and PvP and there was no difference. Each Profession had a max level set of armor with stats that corresponded to it’s unique playstyle. We had probably 100 different armor sets per profession but the only difference was the look not the actual stats on the armor.

Reasons I feel so “BLEH!!”:

1. Build Diversity is non-igistant – see the many posts on these forums and guru.
2. Story just sucks after the Orders chains.
3. Grind, Grind, and more Grind.
4. Basically this isn’t GW2 it’s an A-Net/NCSoft game using SOME of the old GW lore and made to milk people of their hard earned money.

Some ways to fix these:

Add more skills to each Profession and not just utility skills or new weapons. Make new skills for weapons we currently have and allow us to choose the 5 WE want.

Add the Story versions of the Dungeons to the actual story-line. We never hear anything about Destiny’s Edge after the racial story is over until we get to Arah.

Grind: Go back to Profession specific armor with an easy to get top set. If you want grind, that’s what the different looks are for(Obsidian Armor).

Go back and talk to the ORIGINAL Devs of Prophecies and see what they did right with GW and adapt that to GW2.

2. Skills. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, gating skills solely behind skillpoints will not be viable in the long run. It helps improve the game for collectors and new players, everyone else is left in the cold. When I wanted to get a new skill in gw1 I had to get to that part of hte level/story, kill the boss, then spend money to use the sig of capture. Imagine if they made it so you just had to spend a currency that you got every time you leveled up. People would by every skill the minute the expansion came out for gw1 and it would probably have discouraged many players

This actually happened to the GW vets that played from the begining when Factions came out. I had so many skillpoints saved up from Prophecies that when Factions released I was able to purchase all my skills at launch(except Elites, still had to cap those).

Why GW2 Releases Content The Way It Does

My beef is where are all the Mesmer-like armors (besides HoM and I don’t count Masquerade because it looks like it was a dress mauled by a bear or cut by someone as a prank to make a fool of the wearer)? And those Mesmery armors they showed to us before the game was released and aren’t able to be obtained…

The Mesmer armor from GW became the Light Armor from HoM in GW2. All of the HoM armors are old GW armors.

Maybe even make it some bosses class-based, e.g. a Boss which requires you to block a certain skill to break his defense and damage him, or a different one where he blocks more and more attacks the longer you fight him (and maybe damages you when he blocks) and you need to stealth to make him more inattentive so he doesn’t block that much anymore.

For this they could do like they did in Prophecies were to get out of the Crystal Desert you had to defeat your doppleganger and then you had to get to Glint by defeating “Aspects” of each class.

Perhaps I’m weird, but I don’t give a skrit’s rump what other player’s think of my characters’ outfits or titles. I like having nice armor and weapons for my own enjoyment and sense of accomplishment. My ascended weapons, for example, have been reskinned with dragon or dreamthistle designs because of my personal taste and aesthetic. No one looking at my characters would know I’m using ascended equipment.

Mini-pets? Nah — they keep disappearing whenever I change areas, and they just add to screen clutter and lag.

Titles? Maybe, but the current title vary from the meaningless (Golden) to the wildly-difficult.

Fancy weapons? There’s so many legendaries in game, and they just clutter the screen for me.

For me, horizontal progression involves actual gameplay: going new places, having new skills, having new experiences. I want progression that is meaningful without it being a power gain. No more levels — instead, give me more things to accomplish, more places to see, more interesting monsters to perforate with my bow. Give me a home instance that reflects my accomplishments in a meaningful way.

I agree 100% with this. Horizontal progression in GW was capping Elite Skills, learning new and interesting skills, and then coming up with unique builds for those skills. You also had Heroes Ascent and GvG which allowed for you to display that progression in the form of Emotes for HA and Guild Rank for GvG.

I’d also like to see new stories in areas that we haven’t been to in GW2 yet. Exploring Cantha, Elona, and the Far Shiverpeaks in the GW expansions were great(and they added new and interesting stories to do also). We also were introdiced to the “Greens” when they added Sorrow’s Furnace to Prophecies. This gave everyone something to try to get. They expanded the “Greens” to almost all of the areas in Factions, Nightfall, and Eye of the North. Yes these items were RNG but it made it fun to try and get the one that you really wanted to be able to show it off.

How to promote build diversity

Galphar.3901

For PVE, give monsters the GW1 mobs intelligence. Teach them how to rainbow spike, how to scatter from hundred blades, how to drop protection on front liners.
And ofc, revamp defiant.

This happened in GW1?! If so why was this not implemented??? Seems like having mobs that actually react to the abilities you are using is a great way to break down the “Stack here and AOE down everything” mentality that is 90% of PVE.

Would also promote grouping instead of “wait for champ then DPS him down like everyone else” mentality.

What they need to do is go back to the GW Attributes system, get rid of the set skills for a weapon and make armor have set stats per profession. If we were able to choose ALL our skills, even if it was 6-10 skills per weapon, it would up the build diversity. Going to the Attribute system from GW would remove a lot of the bad traits each profession has. Making armor stats set per profession would allow us to not worry about having armor sets for each build.

In GW2, just like in GW, the “progression” is getting the “look” that you want. If A-Net were to allow the modding of the graphics, even just on your local PC, then what would be the reason to get the next great skin they give us.

I would however like to see them give us more options in how our UI looks. Being able to modify the UI more would be a great thing. Allowing a UI mod would be nice, but allowing a graphics mod would totally negate the “end-game”.

I do miss the lore and would love to see A-Net give us some stories that explain how we got from Kormir becoming a God and now all the Dragons being in control ( I know EotN was supposed to do that but we only had 1 Dragon there and we defeated it).

When A-Net first released Guild Wars the skills were all the same. It wasn’t until the release of Nightfall that they started to have SOME skills with different values in PvP and PvE. You also need to remember that A-Net considers WvWvW to be PvE so any “balancing” they would do for WvWvW would affect PvE also. And right now it seems like that’s their main focus in balance.

There are many different ways to build your playstyle in GW2.

Step#1 – Choose Weapons/Utilities that fits Your Playstyle
Step#2 – Choose (Traits) to build upon and Enhance Your Playstyle
Step#3 – Choose Armor/Stats to Balance Your Playstyle.

GW2 Combat System is based on: Damage/Control/Support
Refer to my Video above for that information.

Lots of different playstyles can be build upon in GW2.

There aren’t weapons/utilities/traits/stats that fit many people’s play styles is the issue

The problem isn’t the weapons/utilities/traits/stats.

The problem is people come from games like WoW and think it should play like WoW.

Then you got another crowed from GW1 and expect the builds to work the same way as GW2… This is a different game after all.

The problem for those of us who are longtime GW veterans is we were promised GW but with an Open World. What we got was the kitten step-child of GW and (insert MMO here)

Like the rest who have posted here, I think the biggest thing missing is build diversity. I had all 3 campaigns and EotN which gave me about 200+ skills per profession and none locked to a weapon(except warrior that had separate skills for sword, axe and hammer). This made for some very interesting and cool builds. I used to run a R/P BM build in RA all the time. People would think I was just running a regular spear weilding Ranger until my wolf took their head off. We don’t have that diversity in GW2.

Yes but if you don’t use a certain build you’ll either a) never find a group or b) be kicked once they see you in action cause it doesn’t fit what is expected. And since I play a Ranger as my main and refuse to use a sword/warhorn build (I prefer a Ranged Ranger) if I do find a group they kick once they see the bow.

Is that it is a pain in the butt to level. I have to practically do everything I can in a zone in order to progress. This concern is not at all mine alone. I have read many other concerns as such and hate having to chase down events, world bosses, and do all the exploration and story content I can in order to get enough xp just to get to the next zone. I would love it if you guys at Anet instead let people pick and choose their content and give them the xp boost they need to level faster just doing what they like.

See this is the problem with MMOs today. Players want everything NOW and not have to work for it. Something that everyone needs to remember too is even with the new LS content you only really need to be lvl30 to participate. I reached lvl 80 on all 3 of my toons before I finished Mount Maelstrom zone. That still left me 20-25% of the story to do and ALL the dungeons.

I remember when Anet released Factions and you could get to 20 in about 3hrs. People complained it was too quick. So when the release Nightfall they made it take about 8hrs to level. You still had to work for it tho, clear each zone, do the missions, etc.

If they can admit their mistake and slow down on the quantity of updates,i think we can start to see improvement in the quality instead.

Feel lucky each day you aren’t waking up to “Well, we might have set the bar too high. But because we want to do more things and we have technical limitations, we are going to make GW3, we will give you news when it’s ready”.

Only if they give me what was promised 6 years ago when they announced GW2: GW with an OPEN WORLD. I’m still with ArenaNet in the sense that there’s a lot more depth in this game than people give it credit. You can pick any utility you want, any trait and best of all, there’s combos that literally customize your attacks on the fly.

What I see here is mostly warriors that play their profession as a faceroll auto attacker and then complain about being bored.

How many of you play an elementalist or engineer and have the same complaint?

Actually, psychological studies have indicated that people get happier if they have less choices.

This is a game not life. Games that give much more player customization are always better well received.

The studies were about ice cream. Also, show me the statistical evidence of your ‘always’.

People think they’ll happier with more options, but often when they do they’re not happier.

Just look at the elementalist. It’s just as viable as a warrior, but people complain about having to do more for the same effort.

Sigh (ice cream isn’t a game). Ele was my first main char, and now I play Engy.

Ele has probably the least customization of all classes in the game. They have more skills and that’s nice, I loved the extra complexity, but the class isn’t rewarded for it whatsoever, it’s also a fundamentally flawed class design wise. Engy is basically the same but not nearly as messed up, so I’m enjoying Engy since it probably has some of the most diversity of the classes atm.

Your argument also makes no sense. One, you compare ice cream to customization in a game (lol). Then compare a kitten class that requires way more effort for LESS results of other classes, which has NOTHING to do with playstyle customization, that’s talking about risk vs reward.

Again this isn’t about asking to have more skills available for use at any given moment (like Ele having 20), it’s about having more customization of whatever number of skills you’re able to use.

GW1 could only use 8 at any given time, but had LOADS more customization. And again, I don’t care if there was only a certain amount of “viable” builds for top level of play. I played GW1 casually, and spent HOURS literally HOURS just making new builds constantly, no matter how “bad” they may be at top level of play, they worked just fine casually and was incredibly fun.

I don’t think anyone could sit there and say with a straight face that people like having no customization in a game versus having customization in a game. People like to be different/unique, and like to be able to play games that fit their exact playstyles.

Having less choices of ice cream is irrelevant. You don’t see these icecream-hipsters walking in and saying “what’s the least eaten ice cream, I want that one”.

Why do I have to play Elementalist or Engineer to have access to more skills?
I want to play as a Greatsword guardian, but quite frankly, I’m bored of using same 5 skills since the beta, yes, since beta.

Because elementalist and engineer are designed to be the classes with a ton of skills. If every class got an increase in skill options, elementalist and engineer would have to have even more to retain that same quality. They risk hitting a ceiling, however, where that quality is not longer substantially useful.

I wonder how many skills would have to have “You can only use this with <weapon> equipped.” While I could theoretically use “Shield of Absorption” or “Mighty Blow” with a greatsword, they might seem a little awkward. And I’m certainly not going to be using Mighty Blow with a scepter.

Edit: This is probably obvious, but the above paragraph only applies if someone is wanting to totally decouple weapons from skill sets. If it’s a question of adding more skills to weapons, which can then be swapped out, but only with that weapon, to change the play style of that weapon, that’s a different thing entirely.

If you look at the GW skills (especially Warrior), you’ll see that most were tied to one or two weapons. ALL Ranger skills were tied to a bow, Warriors had 4 skill sets(Axe, Hammer, Sword, and shield), and the casters were stuck with Scepter/Focus and Staff. With Factions we got Daggers for Ninjas and with Nightfall we got Spears for Paragons and Scythe for Dervish. If you wanted to use a hammer as a Ranger you had to make your secondary Warrior(Hammer/BM build), If you wanted to use Staff you had to go with one of the caster professions(Trapper Ranger).

The thing you’re forgetting here is that all of this was design intent. The the devs intended to do things differently and wheter you agree with them or not, they’re not gonna change their game design because it’s a LOT of work and would essentially just turn the game back into a WoW clone.

ArenaNet made the choice to make skill sets instead of skill slots. Personally, I think it has worked out relatively well.

How would using the same skill and traits design Anet used in GW make GW2 and WoW clone? Obviously you never played GW and aren’t familiar with the massive amount of viable builds we had.

The thing is on gw we had a double profession, so acces to much more skills.

In Prophecies we had 200 skills per profession. So with the dual-professions we got 400 skills to choose from. Right now we have 5 set skills per weapon, 3 Elites, and about 40 utility skills. I think Prophecies had more.

Here’s something you have to remember, Anet didn’t release Factions until 2 years after Prophecies and it took them 1 year to release the Stone Summit patch. It wasn’t until after the success of the Stone Summit patch that hey decided to finish up Factions for release. When they announce Factions they also announced that they’d be doing a Standalone every 6 months for GW. We ended up getting Nightfall 6 months after Factions and EotN a year after. Then Anet announced GW2 and here we are.

Umm what?

Factions was released exactly one year after Prophecies. Guild Wars: Prophecies was released on April 28th, of 2005. While Guild Wars: Factions was released on April 28th, of 2006. The Stone Summit (or Sorrow’s Furnace) was released on September 7th, of 2005. Six months after Guild Wars’ initial release.

And Factions wasn’t even an expansion. It was an entirely new Campaign like Prophecies. Basically a whole new game. Released within a year.

And Guild Wars 2 had more content at launch than Factions and Prophecies put together.

Everyone knows the game launched too early. They spent the first year getting it to where it is now, which is playable. This project is so much bigger and more ambitious than Guild Wars 1, you might as well not try to compare.

50 devs vs 300. 25 missions in Prophecies and 13 missions in Factions compared to how many personal stories?

How many starting zones in the two games.

Hell people finished Factions in 1 week and complained there was nothing to do. One week!

Uhm, I actually finished the story-line in Factions in 12 hrs with my Prophecies Ranger. That didn’t mean I was left with nothing to do, I still had the Assassin and Ritualist professions to level and take to Prophecies. Not to mention 3 other 20s to bring over to Cantha. Oh, and then there was Anet moving all PvP except GvG to the Battle Isles not to mention capping all my Elites on each character. When you compare all that including the replayability of GW, GW had much more content than what GW2 has.

Now I’m not saying we need an expansion, what we need is an actual GW2 not WoW in Tyria.

Are expansion needed? [Merged]

They did it for Guild Wars.

Truth be told, GW2 is just making money for WildStar. That’s NCsoft’s main game now. GW2 is just here to make money for the development of that game. Watch and see. Everything that was supposed to be in GW2 from the beginning will be in that game.

GW1 ALSO had a cash shop, for the record… one that you couldn’t use in-game gold for, at that.

GW didn’t get that cash shop until Nightfall was 6 months old. Doing the math, it was 3 years until they added a cash shop and all that was in it were BONUS missions.

The thing that kept GW going for so long wasn’t the content it was the great PvP it had and still has. GvG, Ha, TA, and RA were what kept people playing. Not to mention Anet doing GvG tournies that gave away $350k -$1mil every 6 months or so.

Is Anet afraid of expansion not selling?

expansion=new maps,more heart quest,more dynamic events,more npcs,new tier of armors added,more time gated crafting,more vistas and poi.

If Anet does an expansion like they did with GW, it’ll be a whole new area(Elona most likely) and a stand-alone game that can be linked to GW2 like Factions and Nightfall were to Prophecies. There is still probably 35-50% of the current map that can be used for LS and maybe even just free content like we got with Southsun.

Here are the ones that jumped out at me

1. Catering Only to High Levels and End Game – It actually worked in GW. But Gw also only had 20 levels and the endgame was PvP mostly.

7. Shafting Veteran Players. – With GW2 this includes the GW vets. And boy did we get shafted. Everything that we loved about GW and were PROMISED would be in GW2 is gone. No GvG, 80 is cap not 20, gear grind, no templates for builds, 25% amount of skills that we had in GW: Prophecies, etc.

Only lvl 80 in Group or leave....

It’s an Elitist(read WoW and other modern MMOs) additude when you are running a lower level dungeon. We never had these problems in GW. It’s also one of the reasons that people liked GW, you didn’t have the speed and farming runs. Heck you didn’t even have those problems when doing the Hard made clears.

I hate to think of the kind of attitudes people will get if we get more weapon skills to choose from. “LFG AC must be 80 and have x build”

I agree with you OP. It’s a totally messed up mentality. The dungeon opens up to you at level X so if you’re level is >= X then you should be able to do it. Unfortunately, previous MMOs have ingrained the idea of “speed runs” and “farming” and the like and there is no way to fix that.

I recently reached level 80 and I have not done even one dungeon. Read that again ANet. I have yet to do a dungeon and in great part it is because of the mentality mentioned by the OP.

Now, with the LFG tool things might be better. I admit I have not tried it yet.

Likewise for me. I have 3 level 80 toons and a 43 and haven’t even finished Arah on the 80s because of this. This is also why I think the Story modes of ALL dungeons should be part of the personal story. To advance you have to do the appropriate dungeon just like the Missions were in GW.
