A fedora, a bowler and a top hat are, of course, the absolute minimum.

One at a time, or all at once?

Because I want my Geodulf to have a Top Bowldora so the universe can implode from the sheer magnitude of his dapperosity.

I think you should be able to combine at will, or use them one at a time. Universe-imploding is strictly prohibited. Use your powers of dapperosity wisely.

…I enjoyed how my characters ran.
…I enjoyed how my characters idly stood around.
…I enjoyed how my characters dressed for town.

My short term memory is garbage but even I remember a few hours ago when I logged in last.

Oh, well, clearly you’ve misunderstood this fine poster’s point, and are not being intentionally obtuse, because the run and idle animations of female characters have been changed, and town clothes used to be a thing that people could customize.

I remember when we had massive, exciting, open world events. Scarlet attacks, Marionette, Tower of Nightmares… even helping the refugees was a neat thing. I wish they hadn’t gotten rid of all of those things with the shift to the story journal. I wish there could be some sort of balance between them. I LOVE my “Avenger of the Dispossessed” title.

I remember when I loved leveling up. By level 20, I could get a feel for most professions.

I remember the first time I won the Sanctum Sprint: It was on a Charr, when the content was brand new.

I remember when I thought 1g for 100 gems was outrageously expensive.

I remember when achievement point reward chests were first introduced, and you got a new one every day, until you were caught up. I also remember when they included PvP skins.

I remember when Anet released the flamekissed light armor in the gemstore and how they came to realize it was a poor decision to have released cultural armor that way and, instead of ignoring it, they owned up, apologized, and fixed it. Not everyone was happy about it, but it was the right call.

Hi! I’m already participating in another thread like this, so feel free to disregard. I think this is amazingly generous and it reminded me of something I left off of my other post: The community! I love the GW2 community. Some other things I left off: Node sharing. Kill credit sharing. Action-based combat/dodging. NPC conversations around the world. Getting rewarded for exploration and crafting and gathering. Jennifer Hale’s enthusiasm at PAX-South. The cutscene where we first meet Marjory.

Traits Part 2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Guhracie.3419

Guhracie.3419

Is there a reason that ANet hasn’t just gone ahead and reverted back to the old trait system? I mean it is literally one of the most universally reviled parts of this game (in that I have yet to meet a single person in game defend it).

If you want to improve it, revert back to the old trait system, then you can improve from there.

Good news!

Well, if they keep up with their standard response time of every 4-6 months to this issue, you only have about 2-4 more months to wait before we get new information!

The bad news is that the information might be: “We’ve totally got changes incoming, guys, and we’re super excited that we can talk about them now!” Or, you know, in another 4-6 months. Too much information is confusing to new players.

New outfit trend!!!

Guhracie.3419

I dunno, guys, I feel like a bunch of people asked for armor to be made available in-game instead of in the gemstore, and that’s what they’ve done over the last year. If you think about it, they’ve released approximately the same number of armor sets they previously did in the gemstore in a given year, but they’re in the game itself now. In my personal opinion, that’s an improvement. They can take their time designing cool armor to be earned in the game, and churn out detailed outfit skins as often as they like, and it’s pretty much a win/win, for me.

I do think outfits should be more modular in the ability to hide certain aspects of them, but that may be something they’re working on right now.

25 dyes, 10 are shadow. So each pull is looking at a 10/25 or 2/5 chance of getting shadow dyes. But being random, it isn’t unrealistic to get less than that is a small sample size, or get get lucky and get more…

Um, the special dye packs have never had uniform distribution. Your odds of getting a shadow dye could be considerably worse than 2/5…

I always suspected this was the case, but when I suggested that the odds might not be spelled out in the description in the Black Lion Trading Company subforum a while back, I was accused of being a crazy person for not taking the X of 25 chance at face value. Is there a direct source confirming that it’s not equally weighted, so I can bookmark it for future reference?

I tried to exchange my molten pick for a watchwork pick. My ticket was refused. When I bought the molten pick, there was no hint that they’d release an improved version at the same price point.

What’s more, people weren’t sure at that point how good the infinite thing really is, and did ask if the infinite pick (singular, as there was only one at this point) will always remain the “top tier” of harvesting equipment, or if there will ever come a point when better picks will be released. The answer was, that they don’t have to worry about ever replacing it. Lot of people made a purchase trusting Anet on that point. That trust turned out to be misplaced.

Yep. This is it exactly. There have been a few gemstore shenanigans that are off-putting, and this one is the one that burned me the most, personally.

The Impact of the CDI

The blade shard backpacks (and now the crafter backpacks) came directly out of CDI discussion and they hit within 6 weeks of upgradable-in-stages items were proposed. I found the turn-around time on that actually kinda breathtaking and said so at the time.

Superior Rune of the Trapper is a CDI suggestion (yes, I’m a bit proud of it).

Retractions and back-pedaling on Scarlet having actually graduated from all three Asuran Colleges is a result of the CDI process as is the LS episode that is the relatively quiet break in of her lair.

Big chunks of the Heart of Thorns look very much like the fully processed culmination of discussion on character progression 14 months ago.

Its definitely not a game of immediate gratification, but it can pay off nicely over time.

I also think Mawdrey was the result of many suggestions in the horizontal progression thread, regarding involved questing in upgrading items. I’ll also point out that all of the armor that’s been released in the last year has been released as in-game sets, not gemstore sets. (Carapace, Glorious and Radiant/Hellfire all come to mind)

No as bad as announcing something that’s the player base polarizes over. Right now we are only unhappy because they are telling us the barest minimum, that it’s being simplified. It’s not generating any additional stories about how much we dislike being in the dark about specifics.

I think that almost 100 pages over the past 11 months would disagree with you.

It hasn’t been 11 months since they told us it’s being changed.

Ah, it’s been a mere 2 months, and 500+ responses. Or has it been nearly 7 months, and 4000 replies since we were told there were going to be fixes incoming?

Guhracie.3419

I think it’s worrisome that their stance has been “No comment on anything that is a work in progress” and then they commented “hey, yes, we’re totally fixing this” and then went back to complete silence. Traits are why I’m not going to pre-order HoT for both of my accounts. Traits are why I’m not going to buy HoT for either of my accounts, in fact. I will snub my nose at precursor crafting, hang gliding, languages, and character progression because of traits. This is the strongest message I currently know how to send to the company. I don’t care what else is gated behind the expansion, because I will not buy it until I see for myself that the fix to traits and leveling is an improvement.

If that’s better than the potential backlash over the new system, I shudder to imagine what they’ve come up with.

The Best of the PvP Community

Guhracie.3419

So, I’ve recently started getting casually involved in PvP. I have upgraded my computer enough to where it’s not all a big slideshow of my death over and over. I wanted to have a place to share my positive experiences with people in PvP. I should note that I largely run by myself, not in any sort of premade team. I’ll note if any of these happened while I was with my guild.

1. I went into Heart of the Mists and asked questions about PvP, and nobody made fun of me. I got real answers and information about where to find some of the answers. (Metabattle is awesome, guys. Thanks!) Nobody called me names. I said I was nervous about going in, and I got reassurances. Not every instance of HotM is quite so friendly, but it was really a lovely first impression.

2. The BEST smack talk EVER: My team was getting destroyed. Someone from the other team gets on map and goes, “I think it’s great that you decided to try PvP on your first day! I hope you stick with it!” It made me laugh. It didn’t feel mean-spirited. Thank you, random stranger!

3. I was in the Courtyard yesterday and, as above, my team got steamrolled. I glanced at the score and was shocked to see that we didn’t have any points. A person on the other team went, “You guys, kill me quick, so you get credit for the match!” They proceeded to let us get a couple of kills in, and were really nice about it. I meant to friend the volunteer but didn’t. They could’ve continued to destroy us and that would’ve been fair and within their rights, but it was really sportsman-like to acknowledge that we’d been there, doing our best.

Anyone else have anything like this to share? Ever done something really nice for another team, like this? Feel free to brag about yourself! Maybe it’ll catch on. All I know is that my groups are largely polite and not full of slurs and screaming. It happens, of course, but I feel you guys are a cut above the rest. Thanks for not making me hate PvP. I’m not very good, but I’m enthusiastic!

So many of us have hated the new trait system. It’s worse than the original in so many ways, such as making it harder for those with a lot of alts to keep up. While I like the idea of giving players an option to get traits through gameplay, it seemed like a lot of their choices for activites and the order in which they placed them were anywhere from odd to downright painful. Plus, the increased costs were really unnecessary.

If the organization of the gameplay options were more intuitive and more accessible to most players, or we had broader categories for completing each one, it might have worked. However, as it stands, it needs redoing and so it’s good news that they’re going to do just that.

Of course, HOW they redo it remains to be seen and whether it makes everything worse or better.

Forgive me for being out of touch but they’re looking at traits for HOT?

Yes.

Then i’ll just take this time to sit down and shut the front door :p

Traits are also not from the NPE September patch, they’re from last April. Specifically, 11 months as of tomorrow. And we don’t have any information on what they’re going to do to “fix” the trait issue. It could be worse than what we have now. Maybe they’re removing traits entirely. Who knows? Someone at Anet, probably.

I noticed a lot of people coming back to this point and saying that there’s no way to know what was really a product of the CDI threads vs. what was planned all along, and that’s true, but at that point you might as well stop asking to see what impact the CDI threads had, since you obviously believe the answer is “none at all.”

I’d also like to reiterate that the stuff I mentioned above is all from the first four pages of a single CDI, and it’s all stuff that was requested by players.

Probably the most notable thing that came from the very first CDI is the ability to replay the living story content.

I honestly hope that this is a bug. Selling you something, taking your money, and then refusing (even temporarily) to allow you to use it according to the advertised purpose for which you bought it would be sleazier than I hope is true of the company.

If it is intentional, and the reason was to mitigate gold selling/account stealing/whatever then new characters/accounts should be locked out of spending money on gems in the first place.

As far as I know, this is not a bug. It seems like there’ve been other reports of this in the recent past.

The Impact of the CDI

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Guhracie.3419

In the wake of the news about Chris Whiteside’s departure from Arena Net, I’ve been really puzzled at people who are saying that the CDI had little to no noticeable effect on the game itself. I don’t work for ANET, so I can’t say with 100% certainty what was already in development, but I just wanted to link to a post I made summarizing the first four pages of the horizontal progression thread. Link.
This post was made in mid-December of 2013.

I know that some of the CDI threads had less interaction than others, but I believe this thread has had more impact than any other, and it’s certainly the one I was personally most invested in. So, really quickly, I’d just like to point out the things from that list that seem to have made it into the game.

Horizontal progress should be the main form of progress- No new levels in HoT.
GW1 Nostalgia- I didn’t play gw1, so maybe someone else can help me out here, but I know at least of the New Year masks being from GW1, as well as the concept behind the Revenant (channeling legends).
Customize ALL THE THINGS- This is a mixed bag, but there were a lot of suggestions included in this. Offhand, the points that have been taken seem to include: More dyes, more titles, more stuff in the home instance.
Discussion of some sort of a wardrobe system- Wardrobe
Meta achievement skins into the achievement interface- Not done, but certainly helped by the wardrobe.
sub-classes- Specialization in HoT
Minipets- Complete UI overhaul.
More weapon availability- HoT is giving each profession access to a new weapon by way of specialization.
Upgrade clunky interfaces- What we have now isn’t perfect, but it’s certainly addressed some of the problems.
Lore as a reward-S2 has addressed this, but HoT looks like it’s going to be addressing it even more, given what we’ve heard about mastery.
PvE content could be more challenging: Massive strides have been made since that time. Teq revamped, 3headed wurm, Marionette, Silverwastes, just off the top of my head. Defiance is getting addressed in HoT.
Quick way to portal to and from our home instance-Home instance portal stone.
More character customization via scars, tattoos, etc- Masks in the gemstore, new hairstyles/color options
More zones/puzzles: Drytop/Silverwastes
Guild vs. Guild- Coming in HoT
Legendary weapons being able to swap appearance- Bonus! Every weapon can take on another appearance as long as you’ve unlocked it.

This isn’t even an in-depth analysis of that particular thread. This is a rough idea of the first four pages. I’m about the furthest thing out there from an apologist for ANET, and if you don’t believe me, you should check out my posting history. Just the first page should inform you nicely, as to where I’m at with them. But I believe in giving credit where it’s due, and while I am legitimately outraged about certain aspects, it’s appalling to say that the CDI had no visible impact on the game itself.

Mr. Whiteside: Good luck in your endeavours.

Star of Gratitude alternative acquisition

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Guhracie.3419

Guhracie.3419

If you have the “Orphan Laine” letter in your mailbox, you can still do this series of quests to get the star. The food NPC is still popping up all over the map and the jumping puzzles you need are still dropping the boxes.

That is untrue. You cannot finish the quest unless you started it during wintersday – no amount of clicking on the letter will make the grawl npc appear if the event isn’t already running.

Ontop of that, if we look at so called “facts” they never re-released the shattered holographic dragon wings nor the Sunless wings. So Anet has absolutely no reason to re-release the star, based on past experiences.

Well you are wrong and on the wrong side of history here: You are going just going by 2 skins Anet never released them again in some way. (I know Antitoxin Injector skin they never released again so that that 3)

i’d say that the both versions of Mad Memoires would be a better comparison than LS skins.

I think the difference is that Mad Memoires is a cool skin, but the star of gratitude provides a valuable service.

Would love to see some copy pastes of those replies actually.

It sounds a bit weird. It would be much more logical to refuse on the grounds of the item being used or being bought a long time ago after all.

…is this serious? On account of it being bought a long time ago? Holy kitten, I think my head just exploded.

YES. The fact that people have waited for a year and a half for the return of a festival that was initially run twice in a 5-month period and are now fed up with waiting for it, that seems like a way more legitimate reason to deny refunds.

You can’t be serious. You can’t. I refuse to believe that.

warranties and grace periods expire…

There was never a grace period. This is a matter of having an item that relies on content that is being withheld for some reason and getting tired of waiting. The people who bought it? They’re the ones who had grace periods that ran out. Seriously?

“30 days to return your purchase” is fairly standard retail practice. this situation doesnt fit exactly because of the expected several month hiatuses, but the logic is sound enough that a comparison isnt as ridiculous as you would have me believe.

calm down o.O

There is no logic in this idea of a “grace period” because there is literally NO comparison. It is even more ridiculous than you even think I want you to believe.

September, 2013: SAB reappears for 3 weeks, during which time, an infinite continue coin is sold for 600 gems.
April 1, 2014: Bobbleheads. People are told to be patient.
August, 2014: An interviewee lets slip that SAB is not being actively worked on. People are angry. People are told to be patient. People request refunds. People are denied refunds.
March, 2015: Still no sign of the content. People are told by other customers that they have no right to expect a refund because it’s now been too long to have an expectation of a refund.

The idea that the grace period has expired is insane. It assumes that there WAS a grace period wherein refunds were granted at all, and that a company is justified in selling an item under the pretense that it will be reusable, and then providing no way to reuse it.

Seriously?

Because it was incredibly fun and challenging and had a great reward system, both internally and in skins. There hasn’t been a single content release to match it since launch, with the possible exception of fractals.

I see, thanks. I want to try it.

And they sold an item in the gemstore for 600 gems which allowed people to have an infinite number of lives in SAB. That coin was useful for 3 weeks, at most. It’s been useless for 18 months.

Here’s a post on reddit where someone asked new players how they feel about the leveling experience. Most of the responses are overwhelmingly positive.

It’s interesting to me, Vayne, that you’re perfectly willing to accept anecdotal evidence when it supports your theories.

I rather have faith they won’t screw it up. Why so much faith, you might ask? Well, because if they do screw it up again . . .

Do you really think the game will last for a fourth birthday?

But, see, I’m not one of those conspiracy theorists who thinks that the current system was implemented in order to kill off the game. So I think that they created this system thinking that it would maybe irritate some people, but also be something that would eventually be livable. So I rather think your faith is a bit unfounded, given the current climate of things.

[Suggestion] Unlock skins

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Guhracie.3419

Guhracie.3419

Actual items have an option upon right click to “unlock skin” and this causes the item (masterwork and above) to become account bound. I’d like to have this option on item skins, that way I don’t have to use the skin token immediately (or destroy it by storing it in the wardrobe). The same pop-up warning window should be in place, of course.

Question about 2 Gem Store Items

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Guhracie.3419

The wiki probably has a history of sales in the gemstore. I’ve seen the flamekissed armor set go on sale (you should note that it’s the same as the “feathered” light armor set, just with flame effects on it), but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen the individual infinite tools go on sale. I know they went on sale as a set a while back. (All 3 for 2400 gems)

If I’m brutal, it’s because it has been almost a year. It’s been two months since the “new new” system was announced, and then we were left to our own devices with no information. This sentiment wasn’t adopted overnight. I’ve made pleas for middle ground, for some way to effectively communicate, and I’ve given loads of constructive feedback. The amount of time I’ve spent considering and wording my feedback is probably something that would be staggering to most people.

If the first thread was problematic, it should have been more heavily moderated. If their intention is to not engage, then they need to stop cycling through to the whole, “We’re sorry we have bad communication, and we’re really truly going to start working on it, and we mean it this time!” that I’ve watched happen here at least twice. Frankly, if their intention is to not engage, they need to examine the importance of having anything except for a support forum.

If forumites are bullies, they [ANET] are the ones with the power to discourage it. They have moderators here who can delete and/or edit posts. That doesn’t make it acceptable to be abusive, but they can eliminate the abuse, to a very large degree. They aren’t helpless victims. That is the wrong picture to be painting.

Mystic Forge: Many Changes?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Guhracie.3419

Guhracie.3419

However, I agree with you that I feel that the incremental changes to the forge, over the past year or so, have resulted in … incremental changes overall. There are a handful of new items, new transmutations (e.g. promotions or demotions), and some things generate a few more skins than they used to. But it basically feels like the same forge as before.

Mind you, I like the forge as it exists. It’s quite useful to me personally and a lot of fun at times.

Huh. Could you explain why you like the change that made it so the forge would start returning items of lower levels than it did previously? I’m not being sarcastic, here.

Besides what others posted above, there’s a misinterpretation of my statement.

I don’t necessarily like each individual change made to the forge. I do, however, find its current incarnation is both useful and profitable to me. That is: I am perfectly satisfied with the forge as it exists today; I was only slightly happier with the old forge being more predictable.

I also think the old forge was much easier to explain to non-professionals.

Again, regardless of whether I like the old or new forge better, it doesn’t feel all that different since its introduction. So I still wonder what John Smith was getting at when he said we’d be happy when all the changes were rolled out.

Thank you (and others, of course) for the clarification. That does make sense. I’m just not personally a fan of putting in 4 l80 items and getting a 78 back, but I see what you’re saying about drop rates, and I do like the additional skins.

Also, I didn’t mean to misconstrue what you said, my apologies. I did take your point that the changes don’t seem to be fully implemented yet, I just didn’t focus on it in my question.

Well they did see what we didn’t like about it. Specific things were listed as oppose to just hate mail because it was different. If most of your family hate a particular color for the new family car, such as “anything that’s green”, then you don’t really need to engage with them as they made their feelings quite clear.

Yeah, but just because my family hates anything that’s green, it doesn’t mean they’d be thrilled with a red car, either. Also, “not green” is really not a great criterion to send someone out shopping for a family car with.

“Not green” is basically how we got this trait system to begin with. “Oh, it’d be great to have something like elite skill hunting from GW1!” They took that and ran with it. Yeah, the bicycle built for two with attachable trailer isn’t green, but it doesn’t work for my family, either.

Hello! Simple New Player Question....

There are often comments on the forums lamenting the over-population of maps, rather than otherwise.

Welcome to Tyria, and happy adventuring!

Well, I think that particular lament has to do with megaservers and being herded into maps for events, but I do agree with the assessment that the game is doing well. I know that my home server, Tarnished Coast, is frequently (maybe always?) too full for people to join. That’s a pretty good sign that there are a lot of players, to me.
