I like to know too !

This will make the third time it has posted in this thread. Hope it’s the charm.

MF promotion after loss of skill points

I’m going to leave this thing of beauty here:

They’re removing Skill Points. What about all those MF recipes that need mats you can only get with skillpoints?

You can never get those mats again, ever. They’re removing everything from the game that involved that resource. That includes legendaries, despite making a new system that technically will make it easier, or at least more reliable to get a legendary.

Or, more likely, they will change the process by which those mats are acquired.

i got to be honest here.
its way less work.
the old method was 360 skill points if you bought them
if you did the activities, very few of them was shorter than a skill point.

you always needed skill points for skills
it took 222-234 to unlock all your skills for a class, with 270ish available in the world
so basically you would level to 80, and need to do like 100 skill point challenges, probably getting 20 extra levels from random crap.

it actually takes less work now to unlock all your skills/traits, than it used to take just to unlock all your skills.

the main difference is eventually they started handing skill scrolls out like candy

I am with Phys and Rauderi, overall. It’s not like we didn’t need skill points in the original game. I do think they really need to look at how this impacts WvW players before this goes live… and I kinda think that they will.

Yeah, I know. I’m as shocked as anyone else.

I’m not saying that I’m prepared to buy the expansion, but this is at least giving me pause. I am rethinking my stance on leaving the game entirely, and that’s pretty major.

“People will rage” – is there anything you can’t apply that to?

Arenanet had better cancel Heart of Thorns, just in case.

all hell breaks loose.

If only there were some kind of benevolent patrician on the forums who could deal with their concerns..

This. Not to mention my impossible dream of there being some kind of powerful — probably alien — technology they could use to, oh, I don’t know, delete angry posts that cross the line of civility or to otherwise moderate these threads. This power of, shall we say, “moderation” would probably have to be wielded by ancient beings of immense and unfathomable power.

Perhaps we could call them…Moderators?

If only we had that kind of technology. Sigh…

As much goodwill as the livestream about traits bought from me, personally, it’s still not enough to make me even consider pre-ordering HoT. I mean, look at what happened to all the people who pre-ordered SAB.

I don’t get some of the comments here. Makes it sound like you bought all of the traits, never got them all or are grandfathered in.

I only have maybe 1/3 of my traits at this point, and I have been pursuing them my entire time leveling from 1 to 80. It literally took going trait event to trait event all over the map to get what i acquired, and I not even done yet.

I am doing what was designed and I will have thrown all of that time away if I don’t get to keep those traits.

If you only have about a third of them, then you’ll have enough hero points to unlock more of the new system than you have now, from what we’ve seen so far. As often happens with expansions, the structure here is getting reworked into something that does not have a direct correlation to the current system. Instead of 65 traits, there are going to be forty-five, so it’s not a matter of them locking you out of a specific trait you had, it’s a matter of that trait simply doesn’t exist in that form anymore, and they can’t credit you with part of a trait.

My advice is to not panic. They’re still making adjustments to the system. Give feedback, of course, to help with those adjustments, but let’s see how it plays in live before we uninstall.

The site says that skill challenges are becoming hero challenges and hero points will replace skill points, so I’d imagine they would just convert them 1-1.

Only skill points gained from skill challenges though.
The vast majority of skill points however are gained from Scrolls and leveling, neither which will be converted to Hero Points.

This is false. Leveling does count for the incoming hero point system. All other skill points will be converted to Djinngots.

Skills are part and parcel of the reward track for the groups. I wouldn’t unlock anything that you’re not going to be using in the near future, since the new system will be a complete rework of the old. You should read Dulfy’s summary of the livestream or watch the first ~5 minutes of it to get a better idea of how it will function.

Will previous successfully challenged challenges apply to the 65?

Given that the mastery system will be applying retroactively, I don’t see how they could exclude challenges you’ve already done. If you’ve done all the challenges already, that seems like a pretty major disadvantage, if not, anyway. So I would certainly find it to be mystifying if they didn’t. I do wonder if hero points will be account-wide, given that map complete will leave you with an excess of points.

Also, I could’ve sworn that the 65 points above and beyond leveling would be used in the HoT elite specialization trees, not the base system. I’ll go do some research and update with what I find. It’s 465 for the base system. But they did say that the numbers are not set in stone.

This is awful for the people who choose to level through WvWvW or PvP.

Map completionists have a much better time under this system, but WvWvW has an extremely limited number of skill challenges available to them, and actually going to do them means that you’re taking up a slot for your world without contributing anything.

PvP might as well just not give tomes of knowledge anymore, because the characters leveled through it will be crippled by the lack of traits.

It seems as though this is even more of a step back. Under system 1 I could still play my release date mesmer and thief. Now it sounds as though I’m restricted to just my world completion mesmer. Wonderful.

1. There’s no need to go through the unlocking process in PvP. Everything will be unlocked automatically.
2. When you level via tomes, you will still get the overwhelming majority of the hero points you need. Most of the points will be obtained by simply leveling- skill challenges are just supplemental, and really won’t be necessary until Heart of Thorns.
3. There’s no telling how they’re going to tweak the system so that it has better synergy with those game modes.

One thing I learned from WoW: Wait until something is in the game and I can see how it functions before I assume anything about it. Some things I was sure would be game-breaking never made it in. Some things I assumed would be game-breaking had to be balanced. And some things made absolutely no difference at all, or were a distinct improvement.

This system is a work in progress. That’s a good thing. It was awesome to hear them theorycrafting during the livestream. It means we can still give feedback. I know people are discouraged, but let’s prove to them that we can handle getting news about a work in progress. It’s… it’s actually time to put on those constructive feedback caps again. Imma have to go looking for mine…

We have a chance to effect change, here. There’ll be plenty of time for doom and gloom (if the last year is any indication) once the system is in the game. But right now, let’s all try to focus on the positives. I’m not saying you don’t have a right to feel however you feel. I’m just saying that now that they’ve given us the information we’ve been begging for, let’s show them how good feedback actually works.

Whose builds are burned, and why?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Guhracie.3419

One of my favorite PvE builds and my absolute favorite PvP build is being flat out removed, with nothing remotely similar to replace it.

I run an elixir fused bomb build with clerics gear, light condition duration for immobilize and vulnerability stacks, and of course the full bomb suite of traits from the explosive tree. They’re going to remove Elixir Infused Bombs for a heal on blast finisher trait. How does that fill even remotely the same niche? And aren’t bombs already unpopular enough without have no trait for them?

I have honestly not been so saddened by any change to the game, not even when they took away my shroud bounce builds, I feel like I’ve just been punched in the gut, that clerics engi build is just so much fun and it’s the build I’ve had more compliments on in PvP than any other.

This build honestly sounds like the exact type of candidate that Roy was talking about when he said to leave the team feedback. They said none of what they posted was set in stone multiple times throughout the stream. There is a good chance your build could still make it in the release. Make a forum post about this.

I really think it’s important to focus on this. Nobody’s builds are burned yet, because it’s a work in progress. That was obvious, and actually pretty exciting to see. (I see now that the OP did address this already- my apologies for clogging up the thread, but I don’t want it to be full of rage, either. So I did intend this to be helpful.)

That’s why they really need to grandfather us in. What ever is currently unlocked on a character should be unlocked after the update. Who the heck wants to grind to get something you already have.

Especially if you grinded it out in the current BS trait system.

They can’t grandfather anyone in, because it’s not the same system at all, from what they’ve shown. There’s no direct correlation, which there was in the latest iteration. This is basically a clean slate, and it kind of looks like we’ll essentially have access to most of what we need. I’d say we should wait and see how it all pans out before panicking… and yes, I realize that some of you are wondering if I’ve been hacked, given my general stance on these things.

So HoT will essentially be NPE for everyone, including 80’s who currently have everything unlocked?

It looks like you’re going to get hero points based on your level (mostly) and then however many correspond to skill challenges you’ve completed around the world. It looks like being level 80 will allow for a majority of the unlocks. So it’s more like the new system will be implemented and you’ll get a refund of approximately however many points you should have. There’s no word on if these points will be in any way account bound.

So, yes. I am arbitrarily going to lose utility skills and traits and have to grind old content to get them back.

Guhracie.3419

I know everyone is waiting with bated breath to hear what I think about this news (yes, sarcasm!) so I thought I’d try and get some thoughts together about it. I’m sick and my head is cloudy on account of meds and generally being sick, so please forgive any obvious errors I make, here.

Cautiously Optimistic

Over the last year +, I’ve learned to be extremely wary of any changes to the game, but I have to remind myself that not all the changes have been detrimental. Certainly there are stand-outs that have, for me, overshadowed the good changes, but I’m no longer as invested as I was (for better or worse), and so it doesn’t really cost me anything to hope for the best (“best” is subjective here, and means “best I can muster to hope for,” of course). This may not seem overly optimistic, but it’s a distinct improvement over where I’ve been.

Why Optimism?

Well, a few reasons, really:

  • It means getting rid of the current trait system. That one thing is such a huge relief, I really cannot overstate this.
  • The only currency that was mentioned are the hero points, which are obtained from the current skill challenges. This outright solves two major issues I have with the current system- punitive cost, and reliance on events that are unclear, have long cooldowns, or are bugged. The skill challenges are marked clearly on the map, they are on-demand events, and it’s really easy to get help from people in the map. (Note: I am taking this at face-value, until I know differently.)
  • I touched on this above, but something that was heavily suggested in the threads has been to make trait unlocks more like skill challenges. I’ve said it would buy a lot of goodwill back from me, and it does.
  • It sounds like a return to the simplicity of playing the game for character progression.

Things We Don’t Know

I am not excessively worried about these things, but I hope they are addressed soon.

  • When in the leveling process can we start accessing traits?
  • This seems like it may impact the NPE leveling drag, by tying skill unlocks into this whole reward track system. This is a very positive thing, if so and I would love to hear more about how leveling up will be impacted by these new systems.
  • Will tomes of knowledge be changed into mystic forge mats?

Timing

It took 3 months to get this amount of information out to us, and there is a lot of padding in those posts. Are we going to get more regular updates? Should we expect to continue the 3 month gap?

Verdict

Based on what we know right now, it already feels like a system that has had much more thought put into it- and I should bloody well hope so, given that it’s been over a year.

I still think the cost of the current system should be reduced to be minimal in the meantime, but that’s going to be your angry crowd to handle, not mine.

I’m willing to wait and see, regarding the new system. I don’t think we have enough information to really be able to gauge how it’ll feel in the open world, at present. It’s possible that this will be tedious and awful in ways I can’t think of, right now. That’s just a fact that ANET has taught me over the last year. But I also have to remind myself that it’s possible that this will hit the right notes and, at least for me, make the game enjoyable again.

And, truthfully, if the game is enjoyable for me again, I’d be more willing to overlook a number of flaws.

Plus, the interfaces look cool.

So, that’s where I’m at with the announcement, after some thought and lots of cold medicine. Thanks for sticking with it over the last year. I’d love to lay this particular topic to rest (at some point, after we’ve seen how it plays and have given feedback on it, obviously- not, like, tomorrow) and cross paths with some of you in other areas.

To cautious optimism!

EDIT: Haha, looks like Majic has swooped in and stolen my thunder, with a much more succinct and well-stated summary of pretty much what I’ve just said. Ah, well.

I notice there’s no word on when (in the leveling process, I mean) the unlocks are happening. And, guys, it’s almost a guarantee at this point that this is going to be released with Heart of Thorns. Otherwise they’ll have to patch the world to rely on the hero points system first. Something else to note: traits are locked to tiers. So if you don’t like any of the three master tier traits, but you need a grandmaster, you can’t slot an adept trait in the master tier. (This is important to me right now as I frequently use traits that aren’t in the selected tier.)

Yeah, really no need to implement such a thing. If you want the watchwork sprockets, buy the watchwork pickax. If not, then use whichever pickax you want and don’t be jealous of what others have. :/

Well, you see, when they first implemented the infinite tools, the watchwork pick didn’t exist, and there were assurances that the molten pick wasn’t going to be displaced as the top tier of mining picks. So… many of us did not have that option.

Guhracie.3419

Thats a horrifying prospect.

If the goal was to make the process MORE grind-y and less fun over all then yeah, make it a bar to fill.

If they’ve been listening though, and I do mean REALLY listening to what we’ve suggested for Trait revamp they’d know that a common theme that we’ve expressed here has been to make obtaining the traits actually meaningful.

make the things we need to do to get them have something to do with the actual traits themselves AND (this is the most important suggestion) make sure they are level appropriate. Add to this a lowered cost for purchasing the traits for those that want to buy them outright and I think most (not all), but most people that have been at these threads would be satisfied.

Am i wrong in any of those 3 key changes being the most wanted from a lot of people in here?

Here’s the thing… at this point, I honestly don’t even care about if earning traits has anything to do with what the trait does, or what profession it is, or anything.

The only thing that matters to me is that it’s not ripping me off, and it’s not grindy every single time I want to level up an alt. So my key points are that I want it to be accessible earlier in the leveling process (First point at level 15, ideally), and the cost to unlock all of them should be under 10g. Honestly, the method by which they are obtained is almost irrelevant to me, at this point, as long as it’s not something I have to grind out, over and over again.

NPE Feedback [Merged] - Please read 1st post

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Guhracie.3419

Guhracie.3419

The new trait system is absolutely terrible beyond a doubt. It makes classes harder to level and leveling more boring and sucky because you have to wait a ridiculously long time to get traits that are core to a class to even function.

I’m not going to defend the trait system as I agree it was a step backwards, but there are absolutely no traits that are so core to a class to make it not functional while leveling up.

Why do I say this? Because I’ve leveled up 2 alts now during NPE and have hit 80 no problem. Once you hit 80 you can start worrying about what kind of traits you need for specific dungeon runs, fractals, wvw, whatever. But while leveling up you absolutely do not need any of them. I’ve hit 80 without spending a single trait point (through normal map completion means, and not EoTM). Quite honestly I forget I even have trait points.

Oh, you’ve leveled up all two of the professions so you can unequivocally say that there are no traits so core to a class to make it not functional while leveling up? Huh. Well, it’s a good thing there aren’t eight professions with their own strengths and weaknesses.

And if you’re arguing that traits are meaningless (“…honestly, I forget I even have trait points.”), I’m kind of wondering if that’s an even bigger indictment of the entire system. I cannot possibly imagine finding the difference in having traits negligible, and while I was known to forget to assign points right away at times, I also can tell the difference in a well-traited character, versus untraited.

Not all of the reward track rewards give you access to a weapon or armor piece. Some of them are just champion loot boxes with regular items in it.

The type of armor (light, medium, heavy) is determined by the recipe you buy. You can select the stats, but not the armor type.

One more thing: for those saying that traits isn’t part of NPE, you are partially right. Traits were changed before NPE but NPE made them worse. After April 2014 Feature Patch, it was a nice and interesting idea to have traits being unlocked by doing some content (not taking in account that some of those content keeps being bugged). But after September 2014 Feature Patch and NPE it got worse by being given trait points and access to them later than before.

September didn’t push traits back, but it did make leveling even more restrictive and boring by gating utility skills and downed skills, which made a lack of traits even more noticeable. Traits were pushed back with the April 15, 2014 patch.

You know, you guys are making me miss Blizzard. I didn’t think that was possible.

1. The change in the trait system.
11. The NPE. Level-gating things in order to make leveling seem more rewarding.
12. Putting precursor crafting into the game as a feature of the expansion.
13. Putting a muzzle on Josh Foreman.
14. Selling the infinite continue coin in the gemstore, then failing to work on that content at all for at least a year.
15. Introducing the watchwork pick at the same price point as the other infinite gathering tools.
16. Three months since the announcement of the expansion, and we still don’t have any information about what the other specializations will be, aside from Ranger-Druid/Staff, and Necro-Greatsword.
17. Selling the SAB minis on the SAB anniversary, with no intention of bringing it back right now.
18. Turning townclothes into tonics, not outfits.
19. Fractal reset.
20. Adding currencies to the game, but not to the wallet.
21. Narrowing dailies to be overly specific and complete removal of monthlies.

(I could make an equally long list of good design choices, as well, but that’s not the topic of this thread.)

Note that the countdown is 2 weeks of LOGGED IN real time (not a constantly running 2 week clock).

No, it’s 2 weeks real time from when you first remove it from your mail.

Actually, it’s 2 weeks real time counting from first activation. I still have one around from the beginning of the game (that i have never really needed yet), and it’s still usable.

Oh? Mine would all start counting down right from when I pulled them from my mail. Or at least I thought they did. Maybe I used them once, lol.

The ones you buy off the gemstore start counting down when you take them out of the mail- the ones that come with heroic (?) edition don’t start counting until you use it.

I think it’s important for ANET to examine why any system they implement does well or poorly with players. I mean, I assume they implement things in order to engage the player, and if it’s not accomplishing that, what’s the point?

Ayrialana answered the first two very thoroughly, but I did want to add to your third question, and also say welcome back!

It’s absolutely true that you should look for the class that you find fun. That being said, here’s some info on the state of things:
For now, necromancer is under-performing in PvE. Anet is making changes to address this by changing how conditions function, but it’s certainly something to be aware of.
However, necro is really strong in PvP right now. Engineer is probably considered “meta” in PvP, and ele is not far behind.
Elementalist is strong in all three modes (pvp, wvw, pve), but it’s also the profession with the highest risk/reward ratio.
Ranger and thief are good for roaming in wvw, I think, and that’s pretty much the extent of my knowledge of wvw. Thief has it a little easier than ranger in group-pve content, and they’re about high-middle of the pack for PvP. Ranger is ideal for solo pve.
Guards and warriors are ideal for just about anything pve.

I am not well-informed about mesmers. I know some people who play them incredibly well. And, ultimately, a well-played non-meta profession is preferable to an unskilled meta profession, in my opinion.

The trait system is the worst part of it the way that they’re now so expensive and a complete money pit compared to what they were in the beginning of the game. Originally it was ‘Unlock the book for each Tier at 30, 40, and 60 with some gold you save while leveling there’. Congrats!, you now have all your trails to deal with the game’s builds the way you want. Now it is “sink a lot of gold and 100’s of skill points into these and/or travel to random world places to do… bla bla… : Don’t forget that you actually can find all traits with no cost of Gold or skillpoint. Not even part of the NPE and there is a change comming to this! How many times do people have to say this!? There is a FIX comming to the trait system before the Expansion! There is a FIX comming to the trait system before the Expansion! There is a FIX comming to the trait system before the Expansion! To defend Anet’s choise in this was to make GW2 more like GW1 where you explored the world and found/unlocked your skills through Exploring. I think the idea is cool and the last set of Traits we got is realy neat to have like this but not all of them becouse it gives new characters too little choices. I have played through the game a few times more after the NPE now and well when I reach level 80 I have around 5 Traits unlocked from exploring the world while leveling. That’s way to few and well I could have run around look for them but some skills are locked behind timed events that rarely happens.

1. You can’t get all the traits without gold. Some of them are linked to events that have been bugged since launch.
2. ANET has not confirmed a date for the “fix” to the trait system. All they’ve said is that they’re going to do it, and they’ll release more information about it between now and the release of HoT. They haven’t said what the “fix” is going to be. They certainly haven’t said it’s going to happen before HoT.
3. Arguing that new players don’t have a problem with the NPE because they don’t know what they’re missing is a terrible argument.

Edit: Aww, Palador, you beat me to it. Well, I’m leaving mine for added emphasis.

[Suggestion] Solo-playable personal story

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Guhracie.3419

I’ll add my own disappointment to this last quest in the personal story questline.

I had a geared level 80 friend of mine accompany me into the instance, and we got nailed on the first encounter. Reading about that, perhaps we could have let the NPCs carry the load, but it takes awhile to burn down the silvers, and they respawn.

We concluded, this is not fun.

Sure, Arenanet apparently figures that you OUGHT to use the random group generator to go in with a full group, but what if they’re in a hurry and you don’t get to take in all the videos?

The trials and tribulations of Destiny’s Edge alone was enough to urge me to do the random group thing. They did not have to FORCE me to do so in this last quest.

Disagree if you wish, I know somebody’s going to say “Oh, I could have soloed that, just had to have a friend to flip this switch…” But I say it was cheap, and not fun. The Personal Story generated a lot of letters telling me I could do group instances to see what was going on with Destiny’s Edge. That was enough. To force me to group at the end, with the mechanic of respawning mobs, was a fail.

I hope they change this in the upcoming HOT.

It’s being changed. Personal Story Restoration sticky on this page has the info.

Still waiting for the patch notes that say:

In remembrance of this tragic event, all prices at trait trainers have been halved and skill point costs have been removed.

…still waiting.

Even half price is pretty bad. And I’d still consider coming back.

It’d be a compromise of good faith, at least. :\

Gold isn’t hard to get in game, and skill points seem okay, until there’s the uncomfortable realization that one can hit 80 well before enough map exploration happens to find all those skill points.

But, honestly, cutting all the costs in half (or outright removing skill point costs) would be a huge gesture that ANet is listening and actually values our play time.

It’d have to be both for me to consider a return. No skill points and at least slash the price by half. But, I have to disagree with your last point. It would be a small gesture of goodwill that would FEEL huge because of the past year of an extremely offensive gesture, and that’s sad. I honestly thought ANET was better than that. At one time, they even were.

After a couple of weeks ppl complain there is nothing new in SAB. I think they want release it again if they have W3 finished. Which will take a while.

There’s nothing new in Lornar’s Pass, but it’s still in the game. There’s nothing new in the game right now- should we take the whole game down? There are vendors who have sold nothing new since launch: should they be removed? This is such a bad argument for not bringing SAB back.

How long is “a while?” Is it more than 6 months? More than a year? Two years? The continue coin was a commitment to the community that this content would be worked on, and last summer it was revealed that it hasn’t been. World 1 was released over 2 years ago. World 2 was released over a year and a half ago.

Why relase super miniatures on BLT and no SAB? this have no sense..

Devs have replied, which you can tell because of the red symbol by the post. That being said, it’s been over 5 months since the last “assurance” (on this thread, in this English-speaking forum) that SAB would be returning. So while it’s not accurate to say they haven’t given a response, it’s certainly not unreasonable to be disgruntled by the flimsy nature of the response, nor the time between.

a simple short term trait fix would be make them free at the npc or cost next to nothing.

This has been suggested repeatedly over the last twelve months. (Lowering the cost, not making them free.)
