I don’t know, most people who play MMOs are probably used to have one skill for the first five minutes of the game. What are the other popular MMOs right now? They seem to do it.

Sure it’s not what the game was at launch, I agree with that, but it is the big deal people are making it out to be.

The trait system thing did a lot more damage to the game than the NPE ever did.

Yeah, because if there’s anything I want GW2 to start doing, it’s adopting all the terrible habits that make other MMOs not be fun to play, right from the start. That whole bit about how you shouldn’t have to spend 80 levels getting ready to have fun and play the game was obviously a bad idea, and we, as customers, shouldn’t speak up when the best defense that can be given is, “It’s not as good as it was at launch, but it’s better than the rest of the stuff out there, so eh- what’re you gonna do?”

Traits Part 2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Guhracie.3419

Would it be a good compromise between the new and old system if the prices for blue traits were cut almost to nothing, green traits were set at half what they are? In addition to the quest unlock option as well of course.

It just seems to me that the only real change that is forced on anyone is the huge expense in skill points just to have a decent stable of traits for various builds. Lower that cost somehow and you deflate the argument of how it used to be better for certain styles/builds.

Or, here’s a thought, instead of specific quests for specific traits, how about quest lines that open a choice of traits?

Yeah, it’s so weird that while looking for stopgap measures to take in order to make the system more bearable while they worked out a long-term fix, all the developers missed the suggestions to reduce the cost of obtaining traits.

A quest, similar in length to a single personal story mission segment (not one mission, but the branch that you unlock every 10 levels), to unlock the lines would be my preference.

I’m also of the opinion that rolling back the level at which traits are obtained is essential to a revamp. Start with 2 points at level 15, and 1 point every 5 levels thereafter. Unlock the middle tier at level 30, and top tier at 60.

Hunt for new traits.

I really hate doing this, but Ayrilana, that’s not how it happened. You said that they said it was off the table, and that wasn’t a definitive statement. I asked you how saying something is off the table isn’t a definitive statement, and you made your argument for why it isn’t. Then when your argument didn’t hold up, you changed the entire landscape of the argument. You changed it to be that not confirming if something IS or IS NOT on the table is not a definitive statement, and that’s absolutely true. But your original statement was “They said an expansion was not on the table, which is not a definitive statement.” When, in fact, it is.

Something that is off the table, in the idiom, means something that is not an option. Something that is ON the table means that it is up for discussion as an option. Whatevs. Enjoy twisting common sense to something that isn’t recognizable anymore.

No, but when you argue the precise wording of the exact statements to death, even when the intent is extremely easy to extrapolate, it’s really not worth engaging with you about it. It wasn’t an UNINTENDED preview. They were blog posts and forum discussions. It was clearly stated multiple times that Living Story was meant to replace the need for expansions. And none of the features they touted in those blog posts were ever released as gemstore items.

Yeah, things change. I’m not arguing that. I’m not arguing that an expansion has to have its own set of cool features to make sure people want to buy it. I’m not arguing that this is a company, not a charity, and that they have to make money. They deliver a beautiful product and should make money. But precursor crafting was touted as being an answer to the issues that come from RNG precursor drops, and now that answer is only going to apply to a certain portion of players. So go get informed. But if you come at me with the argument that “it wasn’t clear what they meant” I’m going to laugh and disregard anything further you have to say on the subject.

Where’d they state that living story was supposed to replace the need for expansions? All we ever saw from them was that an expansion was not on the table. This was not a definitive answer.

The unintended preview that I was talking about were the parts that showed hints of a legendary scavenger hunt. There was no blog post or anything specifically about what we saw. I believe we kind of saw that in the demonstration about ascended crafting, chat codes, or something else. I can’t remember exactly. What I do know is that there was no blogpost about them like the one we saw this week. All we saw about precursor crafting was that they were working on it.

Precursor crafting was touted as being the answer to RNG drops? That would mean that they believe that something was inherently wrong with their old system which I don’t remember them saying. Please point me to a post that specifically says that RNG drops, or the MF, was wrong. All they did was provide another option for players in acquiring precursors who did not want to rely on RNG or the MF. This doesn’t mean that the current system is wrong.

The new precursor crafting will apply to the majority of the player base.

In what universe is “expansions are not on the table” NOT a definitive statement?

Linsey Murdoch discusses the precursor building as a “scavenger hunt” in this post , and I’m really not going to do any more digging in order to show you proof of things just to have you close your eyes and ignore them. We clearly have different understandings of things like “what words mean,” so I’m done with this.

All this fight over “New legendaries were supposed to be free” …and stuff like that make me laugh…

You know what, now after reading a few incredibly…childish comments…i’m glad the new Legendaries come with the expansion. It’s amazing how people think that once you say something, it’s written in stone…well you know what? even texts written in stone fade over time. Plans change, times change. Maybe Anet wanted to hand them out for free but NcSoft was all like “Hell no…I need money”

Who knows? it’s not like Anet is gonna comment on this, get over it, i’d rather we all focus on the "handfull of legendaries on the release day…that got me kinda worried, i don’t want to wait 6-12 months for a new dagger legendary.

And i’m glad New Legendaries come with the expansion, it feel right and good. I mean i’m gonna buy the xpac no matter what, and i wouldn’t like people that didn’t got it to run around with the new legendaries.

Now that they are account bound and can’t be bought, and require HoT too, they will trully be legendary. And before someone goes and call me a no lifer, and assumes that i spend 20 hours a day farming…well too bad i only finished my FIRST legandary Yesterday…after 2 years of playing.

And also stop feeling entitled to get everything for free, expansions are a natural thing when it comes to MMO’s and lately other games too (As DLCs)

Or you could try actually reading what people are saying instead of making sweeping generalizations based on assumptions.

I did read every comment(for idk what reason…i must be bored or crazy to read some comments here) and the one making assumptions are those that state “The Legandaries were supposed to be FREEEEEEEE” as long ast there is no Official Message from ANET saying “NEW LEGENDARIES ARE GONNA BE FREE”…everything you guys argue about are ASSUMPTIONS.

You just assume that cause everything up to that point was free, therefore everything the comes next is gonna be free as well. It’s not a good thing to assume.

And you will find no messages like that either, cause GW2 isn’t like a traditional MMO, so do you know what this means? it means that ANET is mostly trying the watter, little by little, update by update. This is why things change, if something doesn’t work ofc they are gonna change it.

BOOM, welcome to the real world, you are most welcome my friend…no need to thank me for getting you down back on earth, it was my pleasure.

Nobody here is saying that new legendaries were going to be free. Nice try, though.

~snip~

Forgive me, but you’re arguing about arguing. There’s absolutely no substance in this line of reasoning, and it adds nothing to the thread.

A thread where we should be very happy for the precursor acquisition we’ve been waiting for.
Should it have been sooner? Yes. Very much yes.
Was there some mystical contract that said “Legendaries must be fixed” and “there will be no expansions”? Obviously not. But to ignore prior statements without solid communication is just sloppy business, something ANet has a reputation for, by this point.
Will it be bundled with HOT? Actually, we don’t know the specifics yet, so arguing that is irrelevant. If I were handling it, I’d release the older legendaries’ collections as an addition to the base game, along with the trait redesign and some of the masteries. Anything new after that would be a part of the expansion, or at least include expansion components.

The time for “should have” has passed anyway, and we’re getting a new content structure that’s actually encouraging.

Given that the mastery system is exclusive to HoT, and precursor crafting is a mastery, we do know that it will be bundled with the expansion.

I keep seeing people mention that we were promised precursor crafting and new legendaries for free.
I never recall such a statement.
The only thing they ever said was that it was planned for 2013 (which was later, before the end of 2013, postponed). As far as I am aware they did never in any way or form claim that it would be a free addition.

you are lawyering and loopholing

the intention was clear. At that time they had not charged for any update, even living story.
It was meant to be a regular update at no cost. Dont pretend here. And it should logically be one. The issue it was created to solve, is a flaw in the core system, not the expansion area.

Have they ever stated that all updates would be free for all time and not subject to change? No. Players just made the assumption that all updates would be for free. The system they had back at the end of 2013 (we had an unintended preview) isn’t the same as what we saw in the blogpost. It looks like they changed it when they decided to implement collections and the upcoming mastery system. It’s pretty evident that Mawdrey and Luminescent armor were tests.

Expansions are part of MMO’s and many single player games. It’s common knowledge (or I thought it was until now) that players will have to buy them in order to experience the new content and features. Only a very small minority will not and would prefer to get everything for free.

It’s also debatable that the current method was a flaw in the system. Have they ever stated that it was or are you making another assumption? Just because they decided to add another method of acquisition does not mean the current system was flawed. They were just enhancing the process of getting precursors by giving players another option.

you are just lawyering, look im not trying to win a legal case, or provide an incontrovertible logical proof.

You know, i know, and anet knows.
Precursor crafting was created because as early as 2 months after the game came out, it became apparent that many players were unsatisfied with precursor aquisition. There was a long thread, devs commented there

then they talked about having a solution ready by the end of the year, price was never mentioned or implied.

dont pretend that this was always the plan, or was intended. It is clear that this was at one time supposed to be part of a regular update. Its also extremely clear it was developed because the normal aquisition was not loved.

If you want to make an argument in their favor, say plans change, they need things to make the expansion attractive, or whatever, but its really quite a stretch to say that this was always supposed to be a paid service, or that it wasnt put in place because of player dissatisfaction with the old system.

So if someone bases their argument on assumptions, and are called out on it, the ones who called them out are just lawyering? Is that really the state of things now?

No, but when you argue the precise wording of the exact statements to death, even when the intent is extremely easy to extrapolate, it’s really not worth engaging with you about it. humm ..

What will happen to my Precursor masteries/Collections if i already crafted 10 legendary on my account ?

Given that they don’t currently exist… nothing. This isn’t about crafting legendaries, this is about the ability to craft the precursor for the legendary. Since no one has access to this system, no one can be locked out. You can craft one of each on your account; nobody has ever crafted a precursor.

It looks like a really great and engaging system. There’s no way to be sure without experiencing it in-game, of course, but I am cautiously optimistic. It seems to be hitting the right notes, in my opinion.

I must confess to sharing Pookie’s point of view that this was something that was heavily promoted as something that would be part of the base game, and it does seem duplicitous to backtrack on that stance, now. It’s no surprise, given that it was announced two months ago as a feature of the expansion, but it is very disappointing.

Before anyone takes it upon themselves to chide me for having this opinion: I have no problem with the expansion as a whole. Yup. They’re a company, not a charity. That’s why my gemstore purchases have been real money in exchange for goods or services. I’m pretty bloody aware of how making money works, thank you very much. Guess what? Even charities need money to function. This is not an argument about if they need to make money. They clearly do. In fact, they deserve to make money. This is me saying that the choice to gate precursor crafting behind a paywall is not consistent with earlier statements and, as a paying customer, I do feel like it was dishonest.

Traits Part 2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Guhracie.3419

Guhracie.3419

Supposedly, players wanted to get their traits by having to repeat the same few events in-game over and over on every character, so they could get them like they did in GW1.

And Anet thought it was a good idea to listen to them over the rest of the playerbase that never asked for that?

Forumites were raving all over about how much fun acquiring skills from bosses was in GW1. People who liked the old system never spoke up.

This is why people need to speak up when they like the status quo. When they don’t, the status quo gets changed to whatever the loudest voice wants.

This is not what the loudest voice wanted. This is a nod to what people discussed in the horizontal CDI thread. I mean, if the loudest voices had been championing skill hunts, why does it seem logical to translate that to the trait system? That doesn’t make sense at all.

Yeah, taking action against custom arenas designated specifically in the name as being a place for people who don’t want to PvP seems like a great way to make actual PvP matches a better place for players who want to PvP.

Because shoving people who hate PvP and don’t want to be doing it in with people who actually want to PvP, that’s bound to make things better.

Or maybe having those specifically designated custom arenas is putting people who don’t want to PvP in their own arenas so that people who actually want to PvP … I dunno, can.

I’m not sure I understand. The transmutation charge system would be gone entirely? So the entire wardrobe would be free to apply, or just gemstore purchases?

For no we are assuming any gemstore purchases made with cash. We could say any gemtstore purchases period, but that doesn’t make anet any money.

Currently zenith skins can be applied as many times as you want, in a storage type bin where you can use when whenever you want. The current assumption is cash bought gem store items would work this way as well.

Ultimately i wish the wardrobe system would be reworked entirely but i doubt that would happen

Okay, but your original phrasing is that transmute charges would be removed entirely. What if I don’t want to change my look to a gemstore item? What if I want to use a skin I’ve unlocked in the game, like glorious or carapace? Or do you mean that charges would still be in place for those items, and gemstore armor/weapons would work like zenith does? Because I use a lot of the in-game skins on my characters, so transmute charges actually effect more than just what you buy in the gemstore. Have I misunderstood your intention?

The solution is to make gemstore items free-to-apply? Or did I miss something else? My apologies if I have, but if that’s the solution, then here’s why I don’t like it:

If they lose revenue from that, they have to make it up somewhere else. There is an inevitable trade-off that will have to happen somewhere and I, personally, do not find the transmutation charges to be onerous. Therefore, it is preferable to me, as a player, than the unknown outcome of making the change. I fully accept and respect that it’s not preferable to everyone, as players, but that’s why it is to me.

I prefer this system because it isn’t an intrusive way of generating revenue. You know what you’re getting, the price is low, and it’s not blocked by any kind of paywall, because it’s not a WALL. The game allows you to obtain them in-game. It’s a convenience item, just like the infinite gathering tools.

Do I have issues with some of the monetization in the game? Yeah, I do. This isn’t one of them. I’m sorry it’s an issue for you, though.

I don’t understand the new skill point system they are suggesting and ArenaNet’s motivation to change the existing system.

Here’s an excerpt from their announcement:

“characters that have reached level 80 will no longer gain skill points through leveling
Skill points will be added as rewards across high-level content to offset this change.”

So for those of us who decided to start playing this game again lately, who haven’t racked up hours upon hours of gameplay and haven’t accrued a large amount of unused skill points, will now have to go out to “high level” areas to get them and can’t play general content and other game modes such as WvW and PvP (tomes of knowledge) to level up and acquire more skill points.

I don’t understand how this new system would make things any better for me and others that might be in the same situation.

In fairness, we don’t know how they’re going to change other things that are currently reliant on skill points, and they’ve said they’re going to change the trait system. They haven’t said how, of course, but it’s something. Additionally, skill scrolls drop more frequently in wvw and pvp currently. I see no reason to assume they’re going to remove that. If anything, they’re probably going to increase the drops.

My overarching point is that it’s hard to draw any sort of conclusions about the impact of the removal of skill point gain without any context about the way the rest of the game is changing.

I now have six characters across 2 accounts running around with a patchwork of traits. All it’s taught me is that they will be a detriment to group activities and that I shouldn’t bother to play them outside of pvp. My first post-patch character has 52% map complete and still doesn’t have at least one trait in each tier/line unlocked. I’d really like to have some idea of ANET’s “solution” to this issue, but I guess I’ll be strung along a little bit longer. We’re almost at the year mark. What’s a few more months?

In the meantime, I’m going to revert to my habits of spending my entertainment money elsewhere.

Can I transmute Mawdrey...

As far as I know, yes. You just can’t take another backpiece, transmute it into Mawdrey, and have the forge react to it as if it is Mawdrey. The spinal blade back had that wording on it, too, and it confused me.

So are you starting Wayfarer from Diessa or Snowden? Because if you’re starting from Hoelbrak, or if you want to access the southern part of Wayfarer at all you have to go on the roadway that passes by the bunny heart. It’s the only path between north and south wayfarer.

Straight out of Hoelbrak. Near the Bear heart there is a mountain pass that comes out exactly where the bunny heart used to be. And that’s the one I’ve always used. From the old bunny heart, I cross the bridge above the path you are talking about – the one Linea uses to follow the jackelope. I only discovered the road you are talking about after passing through Wayfarer a couple of times.

Holy smokes. I’m pretty sure I’ve map completed Wayfarer more times than any other starter zone, and it was my go-to zone for daily events, and I’ve never seen that path. I am super gobsmacked right now. My apologies!

know where it is, but I disagree with the ‘literally can’t miss it’ part. I’ve completed that map twice since Sept and the first time I had to hunt for it and it was the last one to be filled in, and the second time I skipped right over it too and then remembered to go back. My natural path is to come at Taigan from the west, not the road. I agree it’s not out of the way or anything, but it’s also easy to miss. I never triggered a part of the map that reveals an empty heart for it until I went there specifically.

Because there are thousands of players giving (often contradictory) advice, and they can’t listen to and take the advice of every single one of them. I’m no fan of a lot of their decisions over the past twelve months, but saying they don’t listen to the players is rubbish. They absolutely do.

The bunny heart in Wayfarer is one that I always miss when I do that map. I go through the mountain pass, then cross the bridge to the Jotun area. From there I head north, etc – it’s a pattern picked up from my first few times through. I didn’t know where the bunny heart was until I had finished the map and then had to find it for completion.

The location is fine and I like it, but I think that if there was an event near there, it would help draw people in there more naturally. Or maybe I’m just different in the way I travel it, but even before the changes, that was never an area I naturally traveled through.

They moved it in the September patch to the main pathway north. That’s why it’s a good change, in my opinion. You literally can’t miss it, now. It’s right before you come to Taigan (sp?) Waypoint, where the event chain involving Longshanks happens. I think the Jotun trading heart got moved to be closer to the keep where the Wolfmaster spawns, and it also had some objectives added to it.

Any chance we could get a time frame for when we’re going to hear anything about these alleged changes to the trait system? Or is 2 months an insufficient amount of time to so much as put together the highlights?

I guess… until a time frame is confirmed, the only thing I can do is extrapolate from past experience that it really is going to be 4-6 months between platitudes. Awesome job at that improved communication.

Reduce Mining/Logging/Harvesting

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Guhracie.3419

Guhracie.3419

Please reduce the requirement of each of these daily achievement by 1.

I bought the Basic Mining/Logging/Harvesting node so that I can easily complete the daily chore. I didn’t buy these to be forced to run out to the zone looking for these nodes to complete the daily chores.

The basic logging and mining nodes have 9 mines and 9 chops each. The daily requirement is 10. By reducing the requirement by 1, I can easily achieve the daily chore by supporting the game by buying the basic nodes.

Just by having one more, you put a middle finger on me because I was supporting the game. Is this how you treat customers?

So you’re fine with doing all of the trait tasks on each of your 400 alts, but you can’t be bothered to find a single extra node for gathering?

The removal of nodes in the early parts of starter zones, level-gating downed and underwater skills… level-gating is just bad, but downed skills in particular. It’s like, “Oh, hey, there’s this totally useless mechanic and now it just takes me slightly longer to die.”

I just don’t understand how this can be seen as an improvement. Maybe with traits fixed, the leveling experience will become less cumbersome, but… wow. I cannot overstate how much this whole thing has destroyed my desire to level alts in the open world. It’s just… why?

There are some really good additions- the compass, for example. The optional compass. And I like the bunny heart’s new location in Wayfarer. But as things currently stand, leveling has turned into the worst kind of tedium.

Why 100 ANET?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Guhracie.3419

Theres a big thread about this, and some random dev replied who nobody had ever heard of, but rather than posting anything constructive, he was just being obnoxious and sarcastic about everything, so it just shows that ArenaNet isn’t willing to talk about it on a public scale.

Taking that into mind, I asked Isaiah Cartwright about the issue at EGX, and he gave me an actual reply. He said he likes to watch the in-game economy, and he does recognize that Elonian Leather is too cheap, and Bolts of Damask are too expensive to produce. He never said how he would change that, but the fact he sees theres an issue with it, just shows that there is the possibility for it to be changed.

Random dev that no one ever heard of? You mean John Smith? The games economist? Who said that silk was intentional amd not an accident and working as intended? that many factors were taking into account and the consequences of the silk requirements were carefully weighed and considered before implementation?

There’s… no way this can be right, pdavis. Surely. Surely nobody would say that John Smith is “some random dev… who nobody had ever heard of,” because that’s… insane. If John Smith were one of the Six, every last one of my characters would be in his service. Even the non-humans.

Thanks for contributing, Trevor!

Another thing I’ve been trying to do is make sure to say “Good game!” on map chat, regardless of how well either team did. One team I was playing against recently had a player compliment my team on our comeback, which felt like a huge acknowledgement.

Now to get up the nerve to try some ranked games.

I really don’t understand the people who are literally (in their actual descriptions) crying about not getting an invite to the stress test. It’s two 2-hour events. It’s like having your feelings hurt because your lottery numbers weren’t chosen for a $10 prize. This is nothing personal. (I also was not selected, by the way.) Seriously, if not getting chosen for a single stress test is causing actual depression, you might want to take a step back and get some perspective. I get that it’s disappointing, but it’s not the end of the world. And it’s certainly not a slap in the face.

We have indeed noticed performance issues on the latest release.

We performed optimizations on our post processing effect pipeline, which were released on Wednesday. Our guys also put a lot of hard work optimizing the new camera collision code. These changes were released yesterday.

Although these changes have improved performance we still haven’t solved the issue you guys are experiencing.
We have top men working on it right now! we will get to the bottom of this!

Thanks you guys for your patience.

Thank you for this update, and the link.
