A few questions from a newb

1. If stuff is dying faster than I am, I assume my dps is fine. Sorry, but that’s genuinely the measurement I use.

2. gw2crafts website- google it- will help out with this so very much! You’re welcome. (Trogdor beat me to it! Ah, well! Link above) However, if you pop into Orr, you can get full sets of exotic for karma currency.

3. Eles are in no way underdogs or unpopular. Necros are superb in PvP, but not as effective as other classes in PvE (but still competent), and mesmers are pretty sought after, too. Unless you’re doing PvP, I’d recommend a necro.

Welcome back!

Didn’t say it was a good system. I just said they didn’t look at it from someone who quickly levels alts.

I don’t think they looked at it from anyone’s perspective. They took one piece of feedback (“I miss hunting for elites in GW1!”) and ran with it to the soul-crushing extreme we have now.

there’s a big difference between linking, and using unspoken words, my friend. I will simply repeat my previous statement NOWHERE did I claim I have the authority to punish others, ADDING to that I will say; I am putting myself to report someone in hopes justice will be met by the authorities, in this case Anet.

same thing with calling the police, you call them, yet you do not take justice in your own hands. But you do CALL them in hopes that the person for which you call them gets punished for their deeds.

what I hoped to do here? voice my opinion, see those of others and have a healthy and mature discussion on their (and my own) experiences, not somesort of your right I’m wrong game. fairly sure that’s allowed. Also, acting offended… that response alone proves you’ve not read anything I’ve said, nowhere have I been offended, I am not as weak willed as you may like to believe judging from my post based on my dislike of the pvp community, some people just also stand up for others, less mentally strong ya know? its kind of why I took my job in the first place, to not only help myself but help others, not saying I enjoy being cussed at by some random 12 year old.

Also, might I add that Anet themselves said that the filer, report option and block option are in no way an excuse for cussing?

I’m not acting like it can be fixed, I’m acting like more can be done to counteract it. Again, you put words in my mouth. You connect dots that aren’t there.

needless to say, I feel we’ve reached a mute point. You are constantly taking what I say out of the prospect and you’ll simply do the same with any counter answer I give you, nothing useful will come from this discussion with you, feel free to reply, but I don’t feel like continuing these shenanigans.

And I have never even implied that the block option or the profanity filter or even the reporting tool excuse that sort of behavior. I’m saying that those are the methods you have at your disposal to counteract them, but that is the beginning and end of what we, the forum; the players, can do about it. Shenanigans, indeed.

If you just want to vent, that’s one thing, but your title literally calls into question an overarching perspective (one shared by a lot of people, but is obviously subjective) on the game’s community, and then you repeatedly scoff at people who suggest you block and move on, by saying that it’s no excuse. You’re right. It’s not. So explain what more you think can be done to counteract that by me, random Joe player.

I just hope that, as more people block them, their queue times take longer and they eventually give up and go away.

How do you teach a dog that what it does is wrong? you punish it.

Negative reinforcement is the least effective way to train a dog. I’ve been training dogs professionally for years, believe me. As far as people go though, punishment might work? I’m no human psychologist, but I’m interested in how effective negative reinforcement actually is. I could see it going either way.

Just want to clarify here a few things about reinforcement… First off, I agree with you completely, I think scolding, screaming and punishing generally to be one of the worst ways to train a dog. However, all of these actually fall under the term of positive reinforcement. A goo dway to look at it is positive = presentation of a stimulus in response to a behaviour and negative = removal of stimulus in response to a behavious.

Here’s a resource on this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinforcement and hopefully it will help keep us all on the same page.

if you think I hurt my baby girl you are wrong, I could never hurt her.

It’s not about accepting it or excusing the behavior. It’s about acknowledging that it’s going to happen and using personal coping mechanisms as well as functions in the game to handle it.

You literally cannot change another person. All you can do is change your response.

How do you teach a dog that what it does is wrong? you punish it.

That’s why I right click and report for verbal abuse. In order to punish, one must have the authority to do so, and you and I have no such authority in GW2. The staff are the only people who have that authority. Other PvP players aren’t your dog, or your children, or your patients, or your minions. Punishing them is simply not an option.

if you think I meant it in that sense you haven’t been reading all my 10+ points, I’m sorry, but nowhere did I claim to have any such authority, the post you quoted was me stating how you can correct someones behavior not me giving myself the privilege to do so.

Read before you post please.

You talked about doling out punishment to your dog in a thread in which you stated that PvPers should be punished for their actions. Am I not supposed to link the two? As far as I know, nobody in this thread has suggested that it’s acceptable to be verbally abusive, so what is the point of talking about yelling at your dog, when there is no corollary in game? Because I have to tell you, yelling at rude PvPers is a little like peeing on your carpet to convince your dog not to.

I don’t understand the point. There are tools given to us in-game to help deal with these people. Saying that you shouldn’t have to use those tools is not a solution. What, exactly, are you hoping will happen, here? Because if your hope is that people will just stop being mean because you say so, that is painfully naive.

There is literally no other advice/input people can give here. So why are you acting offended that people have suggested you block and move on? This is not a problem that can be fixed, and you’re acting like it can be.

A Treatise on Tipping

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Guhracie.3419

Guhracie.3419

I think the OP is right.

Although it shouldn’t be required, but it certainly is appreciated.

Think of it as working in the service industry. Some places, such as restaurants (at least in the US) tipping is a social obligation. People accept and understand that you should tip your server, and generally do. However, some professions in service are often overlooked as far as tips. It doesn’t mean that they don’t want them, or need them. But such a gesture is greatly appreciated.

I think the OPs point is, if someone is doing you a service (porting you to the end of a JP) proper etiquette would demand that a small token of your appreciation be given. It’s not hurting anyone, and it shows that you are grateful. Sure you could not tip, but it does reflect upon you as a person. Just like if you go to a restaurant and don’t leave a tip, what kind of person does that make you appear? Servers will remember you, and next time you come in, you will get the worst possible service. They will also remember if you do tip, and even more so if you tip generously, resulting in the best possible service, and sometimes some extra goodies.

In the end, it’s just a nice thing to do. But if you want to be a kitten….well that is your perogative.

I agree with this assessment, and I generally tip a few silvers. I used to try to encourage people to tip, but I’ve gotten less enthused about it, on account of my lackluster opinion of the overall state of the game. A jumping puzzle is out of the way content that is largely a solo endeavor, and I think mesmers who port are the bee’s knees.

Scaling Mechanics

The reason you’ll get different answers is that scaling works differently in different events. Sometimes there’s scaling. Sometimes there’s not. Sometimes the dead in range scale up the mobs, and sometimes they don’t. I wouldn’t expect a response from Anet, and certainly not anything transparent.

I have NEVER done a World Boss and not gotten credit. You are doing something wrong and Megaserver is not to blame.

I will concede that getting some Events to give credit due to huge mobs (especially since the Daily changes), can be frustrating, but it’s not like other Events on the map don’t exist.

I actually feel like even the PvPers in GW2 are better than any other MMO I’ve tried PvP in. I had to laugh- the other day, my team was getting STOMPED by an embarrassing amount, and someone from the other team popped in on map chat, “I think it’s great that you decided to try PvP on your first day playing! I hope you stick with it!”

Yeah, you’re going to run into people who are verbally abusive. But I’ve found considerably fewer in GW2, myself.

I’ve actually recently begun writing down the names of people who verbally abused me, or someone else for the heck of it, you’d be surprised by how many I’ve got in just three hours today. It’s saddening honestly, I never understood the need to name call, but I guess that’s just me.

If you right click on their name, you can report for harassment and then block them. As far as I know, you won’t get paired up with anyone on your blocked list.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

It was discussed rather extensively in the CDI threads about progression, but they did announce at PAX that they’d never introduce another tier of gear. Then again, the armor could have the same stat distribution as ascended armor and just have the cool effects and ability to change the stats out of combat. Anyway, I’d prefer to see legendary-rarity dyes, myself. (patterns, glows, effects… seems way more fun, to me.)

CONFIRMED Weapons for Classes?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

My warrior currently runs dual axes, so I’m not sure why that would be a specialization.

I think it’s highly likely that engineers will get hammers, and I agree that the profession with the shield does appear to be a mesmer, but seeing as this hasn’t been officially confirmed, I’d take it with a grain of salt.

I’d like to see a few classes get more than one new weapon. Sword- and axe- off-hand weapons for thieves? Yes, please. Maces for eles and engis would also be nice.

Wait what? Dual axes with warrior!? Are you mad!? You can’t say that in here! It’s not MC (Meta correctness).!

In any event, I am curious to see what weapon(s) for warrior. My best guess would be either daggers or pistols, and leaning heavily toward daggers.

My Charr warrior runs Hambow, so it’s okay. My asura dual wields two super-skinned axes (from SAB) and is the BEST.

Guhracie.3419

I was hoping this would work itself out, but it hasn’t, so I would like to mention it.

There are several events in the world boss lineup in particular that it’s nearly impossible to get credit for if you even blink. I have done Maw more often than many others, so I’ll focus on the pre-events for it (Svanir Shaman world boss in Wayfarer Foothills).

Grawl attack Krenneck’s Homestead, protect Scholar Brogun, dragon totem, Defeat the shamans, and close the portals are the events that lead up to the spawn of Maw. All of these should scale according to the number of players in the area. With mobs being weaker due to the trait changes, these guys die in a couple of shots from a level 80, and I’m lucky if I get credit for bronze participation. Spawn more grawl, more help, more portals, and make the totem have significantly more health (when the group demands it). I mean, if you blink, you will miss the dragon totem event. I was shocked to discover that killing the shamans he summoned was an event of its own when I lucked into it one day.

There are many escort events that don’t seem to scale with the crowd at all, and it’s frustrating to miss an event because of the sheer amount of people present. It makes it feel like games with tagging, to be honest, because it’s another kind of competition for kills, instead of cooperation.

I’d just like to reiterate this. Again.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Slow way is only about 15 hours though when I did it on a new account from the 75% off sale, no boosters, no crafting a tiny bit of EOTM. Depends on what your rush is to get to 80 for.

As others have stated, the rush is to get access to the character progression, since all of it is now gated behind ridiculously high levels and currently, behind absurd amounts of content grinding or currency.

Before the NPE, it was reasonable to suggest people level up to about 20, because they’d get a feel for the profession by that point, even after the trait debacle. At this point, with all the level-gating, I can’t even say that level 80 gives a good feel for the profession, anymore. The power creep is terrible.

#OccupySAB

I have my Super Beedog out all the time, plus I have the Honors in Applied Jumping title displayed, and I use the Storm Wizard finisher(I didn’t think to buy the SAB finisher when it was out so it’s as close as I can get).

Maybe SAB was made by some contracted guy who retained the rights to it through some fine print contracting. And maybe he was fired and isn’t allowing Anet to use SAB under threat of legal action.

This would make more sense than simply not re-activating something that clearly a lot of people want, already has been created, tested, and played, and something that a real money item is tied to that many have purchased.

From what I remember the main person who talked about SAB was Josh Foreman, as far as I know he’s still with Anet, but has been working on other things. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Joshua_Foreman

But do we know he is a paid Anet employee versus a contracted design guy representing Anet for specific projects?

I’m not refering to GW1, but last year GW2’s dragon festival event rewards those masks for free. This year there’s 0 content in it, and they also charge for the mask :/.

Traits Part 2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Guhracie.3419

Guhracie.3419

Here’s what I’m hoping for traits in the future:

First trait point is awarded at level 15.
Adept unlocks at 15, Master unlocks at 30, Grandmaster at 60.
All currently existing Adept traits are automatically unlocked, free of charge.
A small fee or a chain event unlocks the entire tier of currently existing Master traits.
Grandmaster and any newly added traits will require unlocks. These unlocks will be account wide, flexible (as far as mode of play, trait selection, et al), and will not require backtracking.
The compass will have an option to show trait events, if they are not clearly marked on the map.

Leveling without customization is appallingly boring. The original system allowed people to dive right into the meat of it, and the constant level-gating is just stifling that, now.

Guhracie.3419

Having this new thread without any actual information on what the new system will bring just invites the recreation of the last one, with the same posts and conversations and complaints as the last one.

Here’s the situation, as Gaile pointed out above.

The old thread was redundant, non-constructive, and, ultimately, irrelevant, because Colin posted saying that ANet is working on a new Trait system and that some player feedback had been taken into account when developing that system. Therefore, there was absolutely nothing of value that could be added to that thread, which is why Gaile said she should’ve closed it right when Colin posted.

However, imagine the rage at the travesty of closing that thread WITHOUT opening another thread focused on Traits feedback. Why, the forums would explode! Players would launch their own personal vendettas against ANet, or further embellish the ones they’ve already begun.

So, Gaile opened this new thread. Yes, there aren’t any new facts or concrete details we can discuss – right now. Which is why she suggested to step away from the entire topic for a while, instead of going through the same cycle as the first thread. But people can’t do that, I predict, so it’s a lose-lose situation for everyone.

finally, someone who gets it!

Praise Dwayna, yes! Thanks insanemaniac and Corax for the words of wisdom.

So you consider it to be words of wisdom that feedback from customers is, “non-constructive,” and, “ultimately irrelevant ?”

I find that to be a bit surprising considering how much effort on the part of players went into suggestions and the like in the other thread. I dont deny that some posts went too far or were offensive, but to disregard everyone who tried to participate in providing solutions to a perceived problem by describing their dismissal by others as words of wisdom seems a bit off in my opinion.

This. I’m speechless and utterly disappointed by this and other jabs by Ms. Gray.

Re: 10 months isn’t a lot of time in software development… blah blah blah. There are plenty of ways they could’ve made the system more bearable in the meantime with absolutely minimal effort (resetting the cost to the original prices, as an example), without needing to implement an entirely new system. Let’s not make excuses, given that Anet’s opinion of the feedback thread was that it was just an echo chamber of useless, venomous raving, apparently.

[suggestion] More human female body types

Actually, I recently created a character who is human (in RP) but had to be created as a Norn, as well. I imagined him having a similar body type to John Bradley (Samwell Tarly in the TV series Game of Thrones) and found nothing even remotely close in the human male options.

I’d love to see some fuller figures in both male and female human body types. (Sylvari, too, to a lesser extent.)

Skill points will be added as rewards across high-level content to offset this change.

so in the end, we have to zerg our way through to get skill points….
the idea is to hinder zergs, not encourage them Anet……

This doesn’t mean zerging. Fractals are high-level content, and they’re not zergs.

high-level, that doesn’t mean exclusively fractures…..

I never said high-level meant exclusively fractals, I was rebutting your position that because it’s high-level, it must mean zerg content. Not all high-level content is zergcentric, was my point.

As for mastery being locked behind the expansion, I think it will be, and I think it should be. They’ve said that points will be awarded retroactively (for things like map completion, et al) and there’s no reason to assume those things won’t be similarly made available upon purchase of the expansion to the rest of the playerbase.

If traits are locked behind the expansion, though, well… I’ll just burn that bridge when we get to it.

I find it highly unlikely that they’ll lock a core game system like traits behind an expansion paywall. I’ve been wrong about this stuff before, though.

This whole thing makes me really angry, having me as close to uninstalling the game as I have ever been. I read about the mastery and the trait changes. Seems I will be forced to buy the expansion in order to get something FIXED that is currently broken in the $60 game I already purchased. At this point… I’m so angry… I have no words that won’t get me banned.

The game makers are delusional if they think they’ll get another $60 from me to buy content that will probably be just as bad as what we currently have. HERE, go do this, this, this and this in this map at this specific time and you may feel the power!! Oh, wait, did you give us your credit card number first?

Ya. That’s how I’m feeling right about now.

I haven’t read anything new about the trait changes, can you tell me where you read this?

As for swapping or disabling skill point acquisition, skill points are used for lots of things past 80 so doing that won’t happen.

It’s going to happen in the xpac, according to the latest interview. Mastery points will be granted past 80 instead.

I’m pretty underwhelmed with the lack of information since the announcement of HoT. The lack of any response to what I feel are some pretty reasonable questions about the “new-new” trait system is also not inspiring a great deal of confidence in me. But, as I said about twenty pages ago, I’ll believe in an improved trait system when it’s in game, and not a moment sooner.

Super Adventure Box [merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

You are starting to give me nostalgia for the super adventure box. I like the idea of the ICC transporting you directly to the SAB. Maybe to generate additional money you can buy an upgrade for the ICC to do that? This would allow more money to be generated without taking up extra inventory space with two different items.

I like your idea, but the problem I have identified is that, for the past 1 year and 4 months, the ICC has been absolutely incapable of doing anything other than waste a bank/inventory space.

My solution is for the coding end of the game to add a new function to the already-existing item. New money would come from new sales of the ICC. It would be the same ICC, but with a new function. Resale would make it available to new players who are now interested now that it does a new thing, and that is how they would get more money.

It wouldn’t take up any more inventory space, and besides, the last thing you would want to do to those dedicated people…

…who have waited so patiently sitting on their ICC’s they paid for a year and 4 months ago…

…would be to force them to “buy it again to make it function.”

That is why I suggested my idea the way I did.

This relies on Anet being willing to remove resources dedicated to HoT and set them on some…. craptastic joke content that has been stated multiple times that while they would like to bring it back, it is at the absolute BOTTOM of the list of priorities, so much to the point that it deserves less attention than a bugfix meant to fix sounds for a class’s skills.

If this is legitimately, as you say, “craptastic joke content… at the BOTTOM of the list of priorities” then ANET had no business selling an “infinite” continue coin in the gemstore for 600 gems, for about a month’s worth of usefulness.

I’m finding myself less and less enthused about recommending people make and try all the different professions before they decide on a main profession to play. The reason is that it used to be a breeze to get to level 20 and have a feel for that class. You had traits. You had access to all the weapons. You had access to all but the elite skill, I think.

Now? Telling someone to experiment with the professions is just… it’s a timesink, and it’s not fun. They’d have to reach level 30 even just to SEE the traits, in game. I’ve gotten a total of one character from 1-80 since the trait changes.

Yeah . . . all honesty here, I haven’t gone back to my lowbie sub-30 characters since the Traits rework. I should, but . . . I barely had any drive to play them as it was. Not when I could run around on my ranger doing content with better rewards more suitable for my end goals (rares for ecto, components for crafting).

For now, I’m just stuck collecting tomes and crossing my fingers that they deign to tell us more about this “new-new” trait system, because I desperately want to love leveling again.

I desperately want to not feel ashamed for being on the forums and liking the game. So far, that’s not happening.

If I have made you feel ashamed for liking the game, please accept my apologies. I am very sorry, and that isn’t my intention. I like the game, myself, even if it doesn’t seem that way all the time. I’d just really like to love it again.

Outfits are able to be used indefinitely. You use them from the “outfits” tab in your hero panel. Are you sure you didn’t buy an armor skin?

Transmutation charges are fairly easy to come by, if you did buy an armor skin. They drop from dailies, map completion, and PvP reward tracks.

Well, since the OP specified medium armor wearers, I’m pretty sure it’s an armor skin.

I haven’t seen anywhere on the HoT page that says the NPE is being removed. In fact, the only thing I’ve seen is Colin Johanson’s post in the traits thread that the trait system is being reworked, and we’ll get information sometime between now and the launch of HoT.

I honestly don’t care if Anet has to deal with backlash from people who are angry that they sank time and money into this current system, if the “new-new” system is going to be as much better as it needs to be. I feel badly for the people themselves, but Anet could’ve alleviated this issue by reducing the cost within a month or two- whenever it became obvious that they needed to work out a “new-new” system to integrate with Heart of Thorns. I’ve said it before that the longer they leave this wreck in place, the more angry the people that do interact with it are going to be. So this is very much a problem of their own devising.

For now, I’m just stuck collecting tomes and crossing my fingers that they deign to tell us more about this “new-new” trait system, because I desperately want to love leveling again.
