So is a support guardian not viable at all in PvE? She hasn’t decided which route she wishes to go however, knowing her she will be strongly focusing on PvE content. If it is viable, can you tell me what are the better choices. You also said you had some recommendations for WvW/PvP, if you don’t mind could you please share?
I wouldn’t say it’s not viable, however it’s not even close to being optimal. For PvE I’d recommend starting out here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/guardian/Guide-DPS-Guardian-for-PVE/first
As for WvW, the build you posted is fine mechanically, it just needs a few tweaks. Which I’ll post, I tried to leave the build mostly intact, just a few minor changes.
Heavens Rage
Depends on the contexts. In WvW/PvP support Guardian is very viable and welcomed, however if this is for PvE, then no, there are much better choices to go. If this is for WvW/PvP, the build is fine, however there are some changes I’d recommend.
Heavens Rage
I have a question though, have the development team ever thrown out ideas of just removing the water and making slight tweaks to bring it back to pvp?
Yes, we’ve talked about it. We’ve had higher priorities, so it hasn’t been on the task list yet. I don’t know if it will ever come back though, I believe most players would rather see us spend designer and environmental artist time working on new game modes.
That’s understandable if you have higher priorities. If you lack the resources and manpower then don’t worry about it, and focus on more important task. Which seems to be the case now, and that’s a good thing.
RIP Capricorn
Heavens Rage
I preferred Raid on the Capricorn and it was removed!
It was removed because we decided to exclude water combat from PvP, not because of anything wrong with the map’s mechanics (outside the water, obviously.)
I loved the map… very few people knew how to work the canon, so they’d leave me alone as I repeatedly blasted them.
That’s a fair and rational decision. I have a question though, has the development team ever thrown out ideas of just removing the water and making slight tweaks to bring it back to pvp?

ok, I’m done trolling, however how come Skyhammer gets special treatment it seems?
Heavens Rage
A better way to have handled this is not to have told people the cut off time. Just had stated it can happen anytime between Nov 17 and Dec 2. This would actually force people to keep playing soloq, and fight for those spots. Because as of now, the majority of players are just letting decay kick in and will wait until the last second to jump to the top.
Heavens Rage
It seems like the never really listen to the community for the most part. There has always been great feedback in this section, however Anet always does some weird changes. For example, making Renewed Focus a Meditation. I don’t think I ever heard anyone ask for that, I’m not going to complain about a buff, but it really doesn’t fix the issues med guard has. It took them two years to finally reduce the CD on Retreat, and that has been something that’s been asked since release.
Heavens Rage
I had this happen before, I remember because it contributed to us losing the game. I was the first one to Tran, there was a warrior coming, but he wouldn’t have had enough time to stop it. I got it full capped and nothing happens.
Heavens Rage
Celestial isn’t that good, it only really works with ele and engi, and kind of for warrior.
I say just remove the thing. If you nerf it, it just goes back to being useless, and it’s already subpar on most classes. However, if you nerf ele and engi, that doesn’t really help either. That just makes balance even worse.
You see removing the amulet as any different than nerfing it so it never gets used?
If the amulet never gets used either way, whether it’s an option or not, how does that affect balance? Lmao. I feel like you’re taking crazy pills!
I guess I could have articulated that better! Cele is already terrible for a majority of the classes, so nerfing it would pretty much make useless, and if nobody is going to use it then why have it? On the flip side you could nerf ele and engi, however this effects builds that don’t use cele, and would causes even worse balance.
Ever since the revamped cele was introduced all it has done is cause problems. So if they want to nerf it and nobody then uses it, that’s fine too. I just don’t see the point of having something that nobody will use, so might as well remove it.

One thing I really liked about FF 14 is that they really listened to their community. When it was first released it was pretty bad, not going to lie. However, they listened to player feedback, and did a complete revamp with A Realm Reborn. It just goes to so you that things can improve.

I’d love for Kraitkin to be a staff!

Changes look great, only thing I’m a little concerned about is the 0 forgiveness policy as it comes to d/cs midgame. I think it would be best to allot each player a certain amount of disconnect time per game (maybe 1 minute) before they acquire any dishonor. You just really want to punish leavers and afkers, not people that have an honest short disconnect in the middle of the match. Other games manage to handle this gracefully so I’d imagine there’s some type of middle ground that could be reached.
I agree with this. I’m all for punishment, but this zero tolerance is a bit much. There have been plenty of times where this game has massive DCs. There really should be some type of grace period.
But I guess we just have to go with the flow.
Heavens Rage
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/go-with-the-flow/
Seems a bit harsh, can’t even play unranked. I know I’ve had a couple of DCs, and I’m sure people who play pvp regularly had them too. Most games have a grace period to reconnect. Luckily it’s short at first.
Heavens Rage
My soloq w/l is actually higher then my teamq, but I’ve always just soloed in teamq.
Merge them, reset them, or keep them separate, I honestly don’t really care. Just numbers at the end of the day.

1. How do you get Vulnerability from the mace?
2. The AA-chain of mace takes quite a bit longer to complete than the AA-chains of GS or sword, while the modifiers aren’t that much higher plus GS AA grants Might and sword AA 3rd skill has a higher modifier than mace 3d skill of the chain and also hits multiple times.
To me, it looks like a mace would only be kinda useful for a bunker Guardian, and certainly not in PvE.
Symbolic Exposure, symbols apply vulnerability.
Heavens Rage
It does, but it doesn’t happen until Renewed Focus duration is over.
Heavens Rage
I think the biggest problem is how easily the soloq lb can be abused. People that haven’t played in while can wait until the last second, play one game and shoot to the top.
A better choice in my opinion, would be extending the range to the top 50, and then changing the reward to the Hero’s armor you get in the reward track, and you can also throw a llama in if you want.
Heavens Rage
I’m actually pretty excited now, these changes are actually good. Ladders that have rewards, and also removing team/solo que and combining it into one playlist, this is great because it doesn’t spilt the community. As long as the algorithms work properly, this is exactly what PvP needed. It’s also a nice touch that you’re rewarding the current leaderboard before they are removed.
So I must say I’m now hyped, and I’ll actually start playing the game again. Sure some new game modes would have been great, but this is the much needed infrastructure update that pvp needs.

But yeah no “new” game modes. They are still working on those apparently.
That was poor wording in the press release, there is no “new game mode” in the traditional sense we’d think of (new map/ new rules) being released in this update, though our competitive team continues to work on new game mode options as we speak. As with all things, they’ll give details on this when it’s far enough along we’re able to talk about it.
The reference to “mode” is talking about how players will be organized in PvP games, details later this week.
Heavens Rage
Not jumping on the hype train yet! New game mode could just be an unranked arena or something. While I’m pleased to finally hear about ladders, they are only testing it in mid December, so that means it’s still awhile until the final version gets implemented.
However, it’s always great to see them adding and at least trying to fix pvp. Shows they haven’t completely given up on it. So I’ll just wait and see, hopefully it turns out good.
Heavens Rage
April 15th patch was a good thing and a bad thing. I still remember spending hours in pvp working towards r60 so I could get the shark. All my guildies and friends would bug me to do WvW or PvE, and I always said not until I reached r60. When I finally hit r60 it felt great, much more rewarding than any of my legendaries.
However, no sense in beating a dead horse, what is done is done, and overall it was a change for the better.
I’m so angry though!

I read you carefully and understand what you are saying. Im sure you are right and thats the kind of reply I was looking for. tks for your time.
Please can you tell me a good build to try ?
2/1/6/1/4, is the “standard” med build atm in pvp. You can swap out the weapons, runes, and sigils to your liking, this is just to give you a general idea how it looks.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fVAQNAR7dlsApaolDxbI8DVR8QlZK+i2UVAgz1/QQkDA-TJhFwAAeCAKuIAz2fYaZAA
Heavens Rage
So it’s skyhammer and I keep 2 people busy at cannon for about a minute until they finally manage to kill me. Meanwhile, my team lost all three points despite being one more.
Soloq makes me so angry sometimes, I might as well just not play at all.
In that situation you’re better of just leaving the hammer and helping your teammates because they need it. The hammer really isn’t that important anymore. It’s more like a glorified treb that is easier to dodge now.
Heavens Rage
I have to agree with Hunter on this, the med version of 0/1/6/6/1 doesn’t work that well in PvP compared to WvW. I discussed this in another thread, but WvW gives you much more freedom with your stats, so you can make it work. However, in PvP stats are very limited and it doesn’t work well with the build at all.
Don’t get me wrong 0/1/6/6/1 is a very common and good build, however that applies to the AH variants, not the MF ones. The reason why the AH variants are so successful is because all AH requires is you to be around teammates. So they make great team fighter builds. You can pair it with a zerker ammy, and provided dps/support, or you can just go for pure support with Cleric. However, the med version can’t do this.
It’s a very selfish build that doesn’t really do anything well. It’s not good in team fights, even in 1v1 it’s not that great because your TTK is lower, even with a zerker ammy. Only classes you’re going to kill fast are other zerkers, however if they have even the slightest bit of sustain you won’t be able to kill them, and some help will arrive making it a 1v2.
You’re better of just going 2/1/6/1/4, it has higher dps output and more utility. Even 0/6/6/1/1 would be a better choice. With just hurrying up and nuking the person before people have a chance to rotate.
Heavens Rage
So I guess there’s a big difference in opinions here. Some people in this thread say 5 or 6 points into Radiance is viable. Others say you will die against anything that you can’t kill very quickly if you don’t trait into Honor and/or Virtues. Some say Sword is what you should bring, and some say you would be far better off bringing Scepter instead. And the best thing is, all of them seem to be experienced Guardians.
Whew! I dunno what to believe anymore.
People will always have differences of opinions, which is fine. There are a lot of different variations of med builds, which isn’t a bad thing, the more choices the better.
So the simplest way of explaining this:
Builds that trait heavily into Zeal or Radiance have the highest dps possible, however they have the lowest amount of survivability.
Builds that trait heavily into Honor have the highest amount of survivability, however they will not reach the dps output of Zeal/Radiance builds.
Builds that trait heavily into Virtues have the most amount of utility.
So there are a lot of different variables to take into consideration. A player’s play style, weapons, team comp, experience, and skill. Plus more importantly you have to mindful of what your opponent is running. All the builds that have been mentioned in this thread are all viable and popular builds. So it just comes down to finding the right build for you.
Hopefully that explains this thread a bit better.
Heavens Rage
It does have a significant difference if you take the time to plan out your gear. Which is the nice part about WvW compared to PvP, you actually have a lot of choices. It’s much easier to trait for survivability and utility and then stack offensive stats. However, the opposite is not true, if you trait offensively and go for more defense stats, you’re not going to gain much as in survivability and utility. This is due to the way Guardian’s traits are set up.
For example I threw together this build, it’s probably not 100% optimize because I did it in a minute. However as you can see going into Honor is extremely beneficial. Gives you a nice hp pool to work with. 800 dodge roll heals and 900 when Aegis is removed. Yet you still have a very respectable amount of offensive pressure.
What I do wonder is though, why in the WvW guide in your signature (written by you), not even one of the “Solo Roamer” builds goes more than one point into Honor. In fact, two out of the three builds go 5 or even 6 points into Radiance. Is your guide outdated?
Edit: It probably is. Last edit 6 (or even
months ago. Glacial Heart’s cooldown was halved since then (your opinions about traits state it’s bad due to 30 seconds cooldown). Also, the new grandmaster traits are not included yet. Would be great if you could update it at some point, because as it is, it seems to be misleading people into thinking that going 5 or 6 points into Radiance is a good idea even if you’re not a glassy burst one-trick-pony.
The guide isn’t outdated, that meta really hasn’t changed much since I started it. All of those builds are more then viable. I even explained why in the introduction:
Like I mentioned in the introduction not every build can and will not be mentioned, this is due to the infinite combinations and play styles. So I’ll just start off mentioning three popular for each category. I plan to update these in the future with more builds.
So yes I should probably add more builds to it. It does take a lot of dedication and time to constantly update the guide. I admit, I have been lacking updating it, however this is due to my lack of desire to play the game. The game has become very stale for me, and I’ve been waiting for some type of meaningful WvW/PvP update to get back into it.
Also as a side note Glacial Heart is still terrible, the CD is still far too long for what you get from it. Also it only applies to hammer, hammer already has enough CCs, so it’s redundant. However, this a discussion for a different topic.

Radiance gives you nothing but damage. Honor gives you sustain, more utility with the cooldown reduction (and maybe resolute healer if you roam with a friend or smth) and still a decent ammount of damage from elusive power.
Going into traitlines to get nothing but damage is something you can do with PvE builds or with gimmicky 1 shot builds but in every decent PvPish build you can’t just stack damage multipliers. The stuff you get in honor is definetly stronger in actual fights, 1v1s and stuff. The only time I would agree on radiance being better would be fighting NPCs.
But what sort of utility does honor even provide for a meditation build? Your utility comes from meditations and valor; other than the vigor on crit at a whole 1 point there’s nothing valuable enough in honor to make a significant impact on the build, so you’re basically trading out less damage for hardly any sort of gain at all.
It does have a significant difference if you take the time to plan out your gear. Which is the nice part about WvW compared to PvP, you actually have a lot of choices. I get the usage of Scepter and it really help, but in WvW Mobility is OP. For solo raoming wouldn’t Sword be better? Sword #2, GS #3 and JI allows you to escape sometimes if there is a target close, it doesn’t happen often but happens.
Yes, when it comes to solo roaming I’d highly recommend sword or gs, you can even use both if you choose. If you’re going to use only one, I’d prefer sword over gs. Flashing Blade has a shorter CD than Leap of Faith, however FB does require some type of target. Also sword can be paired with focus, giving you more survivability and or damage.
When it comes to small group stuff it doesn’t generally matter as much. You’ll have close to perm swiftness in those situations, plus your teammates will have superior ways to catch and CC opponents.
Heavens Rage
There’s nothing wrong with Radiance builds, the most common are x/6/6/x/x or x/5/6/x/x. They work extremely well in 1v1 situations, however in other areas they start to become a liability. In 1vX situations, unless you can land your burst on all the players at once you’ll probably lose. In team fights, it fairs better if you have other players running support, if you don’t, you’ll get focused hard and you won’t really have the utility to survive.
Radiance builds really comes down to landing bursts. If you can land them, you’re almost guaranteed to win. However, if you start missing your burst and making mistakes, the odds will start to stack against you because you don’t have the survivability nor the utility for drawn out fights. With Radiances builds you want to end the fight as soon as possible.
In short, they are good in 1v1 and also getting the drop on people. They can also be decent in team fights if your team comp is built for it.

One because I don’t see the point of wasting character slots on the same profession. Ok I lied a bit, I have two warriors. I first made a Charr, then I realized how terrible they are (horrible armor and animation). However, I got her to 80, this was when gear was character bound so I didn’t want to delete her.
Plus I don’t like the other races, yes I’m racists.
Humans are boring
Norn are big and dumb
Charr are just terrible
Asura …ugh don’t get me started…rats
Heavens Rage
There’s nothing wrong with a 0/4/6/4/0 build, it’s not optimal but it’s not a bad build either. The biggest problem is your stats and utilities are all over the place.
You have an extremely high crit chance, however the build lacks the power and ferocity to take advantage of it. I kind of see your going for might stacking to help make up of this, but it’s not enough.
Another big thing is you only have two condition clears with SoR and Purity, which you shouldn’t rely on. Both are passive so you can’t control them, and also when SoR is on CD you’ll have one remover.
Also Dolyak runes aren’t very good. I’d recommend going either Solider, since you’re using three shouts and these will give you some condition removers. Or you can go with Hoelbrak which will give you the much needed power, might duration, and also help with conditions through reduction.
Like I said it’s not a bad build, it’s just mainly the stats need some work and also more reliable condition removers.

Hey Harbinger I love all of the work you have done for this thread and for guardians! I was wondering if there are any stat combinations that would work well with Nomad stats or if Nomads is even viable at all with a guardian, preferably in WvW? I was thinking of trying to make a build with them but everyone seems to hate them and finds them useless/bad.
I actually use Nomad when I run with my havoc group, and I’m playing support. I pair it with Cleric and Knight trinkets and use a 0/0/2/6/6 build.

I’m surprised it took this long for this to actually happen. DDoS isn’t difficult to accomplish. Pretty much any computer literate person could perform one. That’s why tournaments are generally always LAN. It prevents any type of latency advantages and also prevent attacks like this.
As much as I make fun of gw2 esports it’s still sad to see things like this happen. Everyone should have a fair chance of competing, it doesn’t matter if the game would have been a blow out. With attitudes like these what’s the point of even having a qualifier?
Heavens Rage
It’s not the speed, it’s the lack of hard and soft CCs. We have the tools to get the target (teleports, leaps, swiftness, and even runes if you choose so) However, it’s difficult to say on target. Why you wouldn’t give an almost pure melee class some of these tools is beyond me. Look at Warrior, they are a melee class and have no problem, that’s because they actually have the right tools to stay in melee combat.
I don’t really care about not having tools to disengage. Anet even said, Guards are the first in and last out. Just gives us the proper melee tools like Warrior has.
Heavens Rage
May sound like a joke but I’ve had great success against D/D using my Spirit/Condi build. (Yeah it sounds like im trolling but im serious) its constant damage and it forces them into wasting all their condi removal and water attunment constantly, throws their chain off. It’ll wear them down
I’d believe that. Spirit Weapons are actually very good in 1v1 situations, I’d go as far to say they are even better then meds depending on the situation. However, Spirits are subpar in every other area, so nobody really considers them viable.
Heavens Rage
@Harbinger, any chance you could look over the build I use to try and defeat them at the moment? http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fVAQNAR7dl0ApcoVDxbI8DNR8QZ1IUdAMBP61/QQkDA-TZBHwAFeAAAuIAIOCANLDse/BA
I have thought about trying sigil of doom but they just remove poison ridiculously fast
The reason I’m asking is because I have a couple in my guild that it’s ridiculously hard to win against. I can beat them sometimes but they win most of the fights against me :/
6/x/6/x/x builds are kind of funky. They have extremely high burst, however I believe and I might be wrong on this, but x/6/6/x/x is generally higher damage output.
If you want to go 6/x/6/x/x I’d recommend a Bind Jeopardy build. This requires hammer and scepter/x. If you play your immobilizes right, your target will have 13 stacks of vulnerability, that’s not even counting the vulnerability from your symbols or blinds if your deicide to go 6/2/6/0/0. Then you factor in the other multipliers such as; Fiery Wrath, Scepter Power, and Symbolic Power. It hits like a truck, however the build isn’t easy to play. You really have to know Guardian and when to use your skill properly.
However, I digress, let me talk about the build you posted. I’d drop Amplified Wrath for Zealous Blade since you’re going GS. Direct damage multiplier is better in this situation. Also I’d op for Shelter over SoR. Lastly leeching isn’t going to do much for the build. Better off going Fire, Air, or even another Nullification to help with d/d ele’s many boons.

Why isn’t the profession balance forum flooding with Guards demanding Ele nerfs?
Are people playing Guards just so cool?
I think most players understand the sometimes your class just has soft/hard counters. For Guards this happens to be d/d ele (other eles really aren’t a problem), and also Engie is a huge pain. Take Thief for example, they pretty much get destroyed by Guard. Does this mean Guards need a nerf? No of course not, same goes for Necro destroying Engie.
However with all the being said I really wouldn’t put all the blame on d/d, it’s the Celestial ammy and might stacking. They’re the really culprits on why d/d is so strong atm.

Best chance to beat them is going full dps med build. Also Searing Flames, Sigil of Nullification, and Doom help immensely. They’re extremely hard to beat, but they are beatable.
unfortunately not. ive tried all of the above but beating a good ele just isnt possible.
I’ve beaten my fair share of “top tier” eles when they have been playing d/d (Not going throw out names because that’s egoistic and kitten stuff I don’t care for). It possible to beat them, like I said before it’s an extremely hard fight and pretty much an uphill battle. You have to be on your A game at all times, and it also helps if they make mistakes in their rotations. I’ve done it numerous times so I know it’s not impossible. Is it tough and hard? Yes, but not impossible.
“The impossible could not have happened, therefore the impossible must be possible in spite of appearances”.
tbh good eles dont mess up their rotations especially vs very predictable builds that guardians have
Everyone messes up at some point and time, nobody is prefect.
but typically because theyre condi overloaded or suddenly cc’d and need to go into water or air early which they wouldnt have to worry about vs guards. seriously if you just do the normal air fire earth water rotation over and over and just dodge WW and use stab for BB you will almost guaranteed win as ele
Well I really wouldn’t use GS in this situation in the first place. It’s the most obvious and predictable weapon we have. Pretty much any competent player can read a GS user like a book.
what would you use then? hammer? sw/sc?
So far my best setup I’ve had against d/d eles has been sword/f and scepter/t. Hammer is a bit iffy, since they generally have stab and some type of invulnerability. I’d still run it over GS though, In my view, GS is just too predictable in pvp.
Only problem with sword/f and scepter/t is that it’s not as useful in team fights. Since both weapons are primary high single target damage, and they really don’t bring any utilities beside an immobilize.
Mace/torch is another one that a lot of people don’t realize it’s one of our highest burst potential setups.
well tbh you use GS when you know youre going to land skills. the good thing about guardian is that the autos hit so hard you can just use them until the enemy burns a dodge or wastes a stunbreak for some reason and then you can easily BB him. either way I assume you run something like 0 6 6 1 1 ?
2/6/6/0/0 for maximum damage output, you have to apply as much dps and pressure as possible in a short window of time. You have to constantly be keeping the ele on the defensive and kill them as fast as possible. The longer the fight drags out the higher chance you have of losing.
So yeah, I’m not going to lie, d/d is a very hard matchup for Guard. Most of the time you’ll probably lose, but it’s not impossible.

unfortunately not. ive tried all of the above but beating a good ele just isnt possible.

3 prized tournaments have been announced , where :
‘’the tourmament with money , will attract big streamers and their followers in this game’’
It seems to be working… no not really
Honesty it’s too little and too late, you can’t have an esports game with a nonexistent community and little to no infrastructure. If they would have focused on the latter before esports then pvp would be in a better state.
