That’s a very solid build for roaming and solo group. The only thing I’d really recommend is changing out Retributive Armor for Focused Mind. RA will only give you another 6% CC, while FM will give 20% CC. You’re running three meds so it would be more beneficial to run FM. If you deicide to run AH, then you can always switch back to RA.

Yeah, I wasn’t sure about that one. I wanted to max out the procs from the strength sigil and empowering might and didn’t know if I could keep them up during the Fury downtime. I’ll run with FM for a while and see what kind of numbers I get. Thanks for the input.

When it comes to procs, 35% and 41% isn’t that much of a difference. You really wouldn’t see that much of an improvement.

Just want to say thanks Harbinger for the great guide. I’ve been pouring through all it’s great info and all the useful links to various other builds over the past couple weeks as I turned my alt PvE farm bot into a main WvW roaming/havok.

I found it quite difficult trying to get a good balance between DPS/Survivability/Mobility (expecially the mobility part) compared to building my Warrior or Ele. So many sacrifices have to be made, especially if you are looking for a self sufficient roaming build. I’d like to get your opinion on this build I made (mainly for roaming or < 5 man parties).

I like this trait setup cause I get better cleansing power when roaming and can easily swap from a Medi build to an AH on the go if I decide to hope into a zerg fight.

This is really just a soloq thing, however it’s like a plague. Every match you’re guaranteed to have at least two engies, probably more. It’s more annoying than anything. I just can’t stand AI builds, and I think most people feel the same way. Took a screenshot of my last game for the lulz.

Well my staff’s auto attacks crit for an average of 1200 (as high as 1500) on 5 targets. That’s a total 6000 to damage on an AA. Doesn’t seem that worthless to me.

The staff is a more support oriented weapon, every skill besides WoW is for support. WoW is just bad design, seems like they couldn’t think of anything, so they just went with a weak spammable AoE, that doesn’t do anything for the staff.

What could be more useful than a spammable medium range AoE than can hit through walls? and like you said before, it is the #1 farming tool in the game

Yes, it’s great for farming, and I understand people love their “loot sticks” and don’t want it changed. However it’s borderline useless in almost all other areas.

PvE ( Dungeons and FoTM)- Not used

WvW- Only really used in larger fights to get more tags, so more loot (Pretty much just farming).

PvP- Only place I can see it being somewhat useful is spamming through the walls and breaking windows at CT in Kyhlo.

Most people run power runes when it comes to med Guard. Strength, Hoelbrak, Scholar, Pack, Flame Legion, and Citadel are all viable choices. I personally like running Speed. I prefer Speed over Traveler because the vitality boost.

The longer you are away from the game, the more the system treats you like the leaderboard God. Example: randoms going 8+ months without a win, return and lose a game, given r1 (despite still 0 wins in 8+ months). Meanwhile, I can go on a 15 game winstreak within the top 25 of soloQ, and still not get r1.

It is better to look at the overall career of someone on either ladder (win/loss record and winrate). But even teamQ is somewhat inaccurate as many of the top players will pug/play with partial or joke teams and lose rank. Others will only play with serious top teams which are almost certain to win in the time they are queuing. And you also need to consider people playing alts or testing. In short, it is a flawed system.

I agree it’s very frustrating at times. You can play daily, have a lot of games played, and a well-above average w/l. Yet it seems impossible to make it to the top spot. Yet, someone who hasn’t played in months or just a very few games, tend just to shoot to the top immediately. I mean there’s no rewards for leaderboards anyways, so it’s not that big of a deal. However, it still seems like a slap in the face.

The way I see it, there’s going to be a lot of fotm players playing med guard to see how it goes. After playing for a bit they realize med guard isn’t as great and easy to play as people make it out to be. Sure it counters some professions and builds very well, but it also has a lot of hard counters too. So they go back to playing whatever easy fotm faceroll builds they where playing before.

Looking for a competitive small group server.

Hello, my guild and I are looking for a decent small man server. We’ll generally run between 5-10 players, so we enjoy doing small group and havoc. However the problem we’ve been facing is the lack of competition. It’s seems very difficult to find other small man groups to fight, or setting up GvGs, so in turn we do zerg busting, however that gets somewhat boring after a while. So I’m asking is, what are some servers that have competitive small group(s) to play with and against?

This is how they work

Your position on the leaderboards is based off your MMR, which is not a steady or linear way of tracking skill progression. This is why we are still focusing on ladders and seasons as a top priority in order to give players a more predictable way of showing skill progression over time.

Your glicko rating IS however good for matchmaking, as intended. It is used to find equal opponents for you to fight against, and becomes more or less accurate depending on the number of people playing and whether you play with the same five people every game.

The main factor in how stable your rank is depends on your MMR’s volatility, which will lower if you play many equal matches, and rise if you play less unequal matches. This is why you may not rise on the leaderboards if you play often, because your rating is only getting more accurate, not necessarily going up and down.

That makes sense, I always felt the leaderboards punish players who play more, but in turn it’s making your rating more accurate. However, the more you play the more it just feels like an uphill battle.

I’m just entertained by the idea that finally people believe that something other than a guard can “bunker” go back a few months and look at people laugh at warrior or even engi as a bunker.

That’s just a meta shift, a lot of builds have all the sustain they need, so players really don’t need as much support now. Yes bunker guard is still very viable and excels, but it’s not really mandatory anymore. Overall I believe it’s a change for the better, nice to see different comps coming out.

? Has something changed, because I thought bunker guard “was” the norm.

Or since the last tourney without guards have we finally broken that mandatory item :p

I’m talking about the way it’s played. Bunker guard is more about team support then just trying to stay on a point and survive the longest. Like compared to a bunker war, who’s job is pretty much just stay on a point and not die.

I’ve always enjoyed bunker guard because it’s a different type of bunker than the norm. Bunker guard doesn’t really rely on high vitality or toughness, but rather damage mitigation (blinds, blocks, boons, and etc.) This makes it much more active than it seems. If you blow through all your CDs and waste your skills, you’re not going to last the long. Most people think of it as just spamming Wave of Wrath, and using Empower occasionally, but it’s much more than that. It more about team support than bunkering in a sense. However this is one reason why it can be frustrating to play, its very team reliant. You depend on your team, and they depend on you. So in 1vX scenarios it’s not as strong as other types of bunkers and builds. A lot of players say bunker guard is boring to play, and aren’t willing to play it, however I find it very active and rewarding.

The patch could’ve been much better, but people are still forgetting one very imporant thing:
From the 9th and forth there will no longer be ridiculously small Asuras, running around spamming abilities you can’t see.

Just make it usable while moving, just like they did with Line of Warding.

Ring of Warding is significantly more powerful than Line of Warding, as it allows actually trapping other players. (Plus it’s on a better weapon, which is also an upside.) It needs to have a drawback.

You can easily trap players if you place your line correctly. The ring already has a number of drawbacks: high CD time, clunky animation, useless against stab and invulnerability skills.

People always complain about guard not having enough soft CCs, this is one small QoL change that would help alleviate this issue.

Some type of visual queue would be the best option, some people don’t play with sound or have it low, so audio wouldn’t be the best. Also some type of ready up box is needed. Give players 15-20 seconds to confirm the match, if not everyone does. All the players, except the ones that didn’t confirm get thrown back into que, and the process starts over.

You don’t have to be rooted. Pop it then break the channel by moving, and you still gain the absorption field. You just can’t see it. The only downside to this is you can’t gain the heal from the detonate, however that heal is fairly small anyways.

Because I originally made, what everyone else did, a norn guardian. That norn has gone through multiple sex changes its ridiculous, so I made an asura guardian since they’re kitten cute. But, everytime I do fractals and its that Ascalon fractal where it turns you into a charr, well, I wanted a charr guardian lol…

The shield has two function, when you first use it will create the dome that has AoE knockback and projectile absorption. Then you can choose to detonate it, this will destroy the dome, yet it heals you and five nearby allies. It’s a 1300 heal with a .2 multiplier, so lets say you have 1000 healing power, it’ll heal for 1500 instead.

You’re not talking about the spirit weapon shield, are you? I’m talking about the shield you actually weild

Sometimes all people need is a little help. I remember doing the FSG champ train once, and this warrior was talking about how he only needed around 100 more gold to buy his precursor, hence why he was there, and that’s pretty much all he needed to finish. Well I deicide to give him the 100g, couple of weeks pass, and I see him again, but this time with Frostfang. I don’t think he really remembered me because he didn’t say anything. However it’s still nice to help people out.

Nothing worse than saying to yourself, “I’ll play one more game.” And then this cancer of a map pops up.

This is generally how it goes for me:

First game: Skyhammer, ok whatever luck of the draw I guess.
Second game: Spirit Watch, ugh better but still bad.
Third game: Skyhammer, why you hate me so much Anet.

Sad part about this is I’m not even joking. Just played two games today. Both where Skyhammer, and both times someone on the other team quit making it a 5v4.

Like it just ruined my whole mood to even play pvp today.

If all you’re reducing is the cool down of the elite, then purity remains the strongest trait, generally. Typically reducing the elite cd from 90 to 72 won’t mean that you get to use it twice per fight. Purity on the other hand routinely reduces the number of times you need to use a shout for yourself, allowing you to save it for your team. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve hovered a finger over a shout, just to relax it a moment later as that 10 bleed stack gets wiped passively. And that type of thing is common due to how conditions are cleared (LIFO).

MI is only a consideration in virtues bunker, and I think that’s how it stays, unfortunately. Sanctuary is pretty much the glue that holds the build together, it’s sort of the replacement for Altruistic Healing. Without it, there are too many situations where you can be collapsed upon and have no solid defense to weather the storm, not to mention all the other uses of it. MI is a cute option, and one I’ve tried out with the current implementation. I don’t think these changes will be enough to make it viable, but I’ll give it a shot.

I do think there is a way for bunker builds to make use of this change to the elite, though. I don’t want to give anything away just yet, but maybe it will be revealed at some later time.

One of the thing I’m actually really curious about trying on bunker guard is Shield of the Avenger. Now that they aren’t destroyed when commanded, you can easily pick it up with the 0/0/2/6/6 build. Two shouts and the shield, then drop Vengeful for improved spirit-weapon duration. The shield has a lot going for it; absorbs projectiles, stun breaker, weakness, and now Aegis.

It’s probably gimmicky and you’re better off going Wall of Reflection in that situation. However it’s something I want to try because I think it has some merit.

Maybe for hotjoin pvp, but never use spirit weapons for anything ranked.

They die far to easily due to having an extremely low health pool & once they die the CD is too long for them to be useful again.

Not only that but you need to take far to many traits to make them useful, if you took enough to make them useful you will end up very squishy with little ability to deal damage yourself.

They’re actually worse in hotjoin, due to the larger amount of people in them. One thing people seems to forgot about with sw, is that they benefit from everything a player would; boons, heals, stunbreakers, and etc. So they’re actually quite tanky. Also the whole point with the idea I had is you don’t have to change up your build that much, 0/0/2/6/6 is a standard bunker build for tpvp, so your not giving much up.

Well they may benefit from boons but their health & toughness are still insanely low.
This means they are pretty easy to spike down.
As for builds, you won’t be giving up much after the patch since commands won’t destroy them then.

However you will be giving up the increased spirit weapon damage & Cd reduction.

So overall unless your speccing for them completely they are just at best an annoyance that is easily killed.
And if you do spec for them they will do great damage, but will still die quite easily & spending all your traits for them will leave you rather squishy.

So it’s kinda a meh situation.

It would be great if they merged a few of their traits then created new ones that gave them increased health/toughness & some type of heal to the guardian when they attacked (kind of like MM necro’s)

Well considering the shield is a defensive tool you wouldn’t need Wrathful Spirits in the first place. I have no problem with spirit weapon survivability in a tpvp environment, it’s one of the few places that you can actually make them work. What I do have a problem with is some of the functionality.

Hammer- This is in a good spot, easily the best spirit, I have no complaints about it.

Sword- Does decent damage, and now will apply five stacks of vulnerability. Not great, but not bad either. It’s just somewhat underwhelming.

Shield- Second best spirit for all the abilities it performs. Only problem I have, which Ken mentioned, is how it doesn’t really stay with you, and the CD could probably be lower.

Bow- This one is just terrible, and the patch isn’t going to help it. It needs to scale with healing power, if it did, it would be very viable for a bunker guard.

Lastly make them more resilient in WvW and PvE.

Also the whole point with the idea I had is you don’t have to change up your build that much, 0/0/2/6/6 is a standard bunker build for tpvp, so your not giving much up.

If all you’re reducing is the cool down of the elite, then purity remains the strongest trait, generally. Typically reducing the elite cd from 90 to 72 won’t mean that you get to use it twice per fight. Purity on the other hand routinely reduces the number of times you need to use a shout for yourself, allowing you to save it for your team. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve hovered a finger over a shout, just to relax it a moment later as that 10 bleed stack gets wiped passively. And that type of thing is common due to how conditions are cleared (LIFO).

MI is only a consideration in virtues bunker, and I think that’s how it stays, unfortunately. Sanctuary is pretty much the glue that holds the build together, it’s sort of the replacement for Altruistic Healing. Without it, there are too many situations where you can be collapsed upon and have no solid defense to weather the storm, not to mention all the other uses of it. MI is a cute option, and one I’ve tried out with the current implementation. I don’t think these changes will be enough to make it viable, but I’ll give it a shot.

I do think there is a way for bunker builds to make use of this change to the elite, though. I don’t want to give anything away just yet, but maybe it will be revealed at some later time.

One of the thing I’m actually really curious about trying on bunker guard is Shield of the Avenger. Now that they aren’t destroyed when commanded, you can easily pick it up with the 0/0/2/6/6 build. Two shouts and the shield, then drop Vengeful for improved spirit-weapon duration. The shield has a lot going for it; absorbs projectiles, stun breaker, weakness, and now Aegis.

It’s probably gimmicky and you’re better off going Wall of Reflection in that situation. However it’s something I want to try because I think it has some merit.

First game: Skyhammer, ok whatever luck of the draw I guess.
Second game: Spirit Watch, ugh better but still bad.
Third game: Skyhammer, why you hate me so much Anet.

I generally run SiN for my Adept. Purity honestly isn’t that great, I mean it’s ok, however removing a condition every ten seconds isn’t really going to make or break you.

I have been thinking about med mastery after the patch, it would reduce RF from 90 seconds to 72 which is actually quite a bit. Plus you could also throw in the new MI, for some added mobility to bunker guard.

However I just have a really hard time giving up SiN, it’s just such a useful trait for you and your team.

I’ve heard tales of Thieves being tracked while they were in stealth too, because they had miniatures out and the miniatures dutifully followed their masters everywhere they went. (The miniatures were NOT stealthed.)

Hope that’s some helpful insight.

I know, minis in wardrobe is just too much excitement to handle!

Seriously though, this patch is really lacking in the pvp department (but what’s new!) Standard enemy models is great, and I can’t complain, however then they make it limited to teamq and customs. I’m guessing this is because of a technical issue, still it’s very disappointing.

Next you have the armor, I love the fact that pvp finally gets some exclusive armor. However the way it’s obtained is wrong imo. Having a set for competitive tournaments is fine, and I applause that. That best should be rewarded. However the other set is far to easy to obtain. Most people will go into hotjoin and just grind it out, and it shouldn’t be like that. Make it so you have to play teamq and soloq, and also make it so you have to WIN to get progression towards it. As of right now, a player can simply go into hotjoin grind it, once they hit their cap, they will just go into soloq or teamq not even caring or going afk because they know they will get progression towards it. It shouldn’t be like that.

I like close matches, however sometimes they make me want to pull my teeth out. I’ll give an example of a game I had the other day.

It was on Kyhlo and we were down 470-465, however we had home and mid. For some reason the player at home decides to go get the treb kit and repair the treb, even though we were winning at mid. While this is happening a player simply goes to home and decaps it and we lose 500-498.

It’s all about the hidden mmr. Its finds player close to each other ratings, and some how compiles teams based on this. It doesn’t take classes, e-fame, or anything else in consideration. Just players’ mmr.

My guess is it does something like this:

Team A
Player 1: 1750 ELO
Player 2: 2100 ELO
Player 3: 1722 ELO
Player 4: 1699 ELO
Player 5: 1425 ELO

Team rating: 1739

Team B
Player 1: 1865 ELO
Player 2: 1700 ELO
Player 3: 1667 ELO
Player 4: 1750 ELO
Player 5: 1550 ELO

Team rating: 1706
