However there is a but to it! If the guard traits Searing Flames, which would remove the LF’s stab and then hit them with a Judgment. So the knockdown would probably let you out burst them.

Well, Lich Form has a total boon strip and condition cleanse built in as well as its own hard CC. A lot of people forget about those skills, but they are very powerful in their own right.

So it probably would come down to who could strip the others stab first. Searing Flames lets a guard boon strip every 10 seconds, so they could just keep spamming Conflagrate. Lich Form boon strip (Grim Specter) is on a 30 second cd though, so they would pretty much have to hit it. Another thing about Guard’s stab for tombs is it’s in 10 second durations for 30 seconds, unlike a Necro which is just 20s right off the bat.

Still it’s all speculation because I have yet to see this fight ever happen, and I’m kind of interested now.

I do agree that ToW is pretty underwhelming, which is why you rarely see it used. It could use some slight tweaks here and there.

Conflagrate- Don’t really have a problem with this skill. It’s extremely spammable with 1200 range AoE damage and burning.

Affliction – Pretty meh, slight increase to the cripple and weakness would be nice.

Smiter’s Boon- Again not bad, but not really good. I’d like to see an increase from 5 stacks of might to 10, might be a bit op, but this is an elite skill after all.

Zealot’s Fervor- Ever since quickness was nerfed it’s not as useful. Maybe a slight increase to the quickness duration.

Judgment- The “best” skill for ToW, and it’s really not that great. Either up the damage on it or increase the radius.

As for ToW vs LF in a duel. I have yet to see this, but my money would go to LF. LF skills hit much harder than ToW. Also LF has a higher health pool, since they are necros. However there is a but to it! If the guard traits Searing Flames, which would remove the LF’s stab and then hit them with a Judgment. So the knockdown would probably let you out burst them.

Comparing ToC to LF makes little sense, the only thing they have in common is that they are elite skills, other then that they fulfil different roles. ToC one on of the best support elites in the game, I’d even go as far to say Light of Deliverance is the best skill in the game. LF on the other hand is all about dps.

Now if you were comparing Tome of Wrath to Lich Form, that would make more sense.

People still playing are holding on but I do enjoy watching a epic crash.

League of Warcraft is more esport than gw2 and it’s a giant Zerg! Sure you can say there is no dodge and you might even say gw2 combat it better. But the passive abilities built in to gw2 out weighs all the bad combat in wow. Gw2 is just like a console game with built in aim assist, most the players don’t even know the game is aiming for them they think they got skill. Keep it frosty.

That’s one thing that always bothered me in this game. There’s really no distinguishing a good player from a great player. The skill ceiling is so low in this game, you have AI builds and a bunch of passive abilities that blur the lines between players. Sometimes you’re watching a game and thinking, “Wow that was a really good time to use fear!”, then you realize it was a passive proc and the necro just got lucky with rng.

Two bunker guards preferably 0/0/2/6/6.
Two meds, I’d like them to go full blown dps so 2/6/6/0/0.
A hybrid build, probably 0/1/6/6/1 with zerker ammy.

Before we laugh at the rediculousness of gw2 being an esport. Can we first laugh at the rediculousness of esports within itself.

Not really, there are some games that are a blast to watch the best compete in. A number of games have already shown this is possible by getting thousands and even millions of viewers for tournaments.

One of the problems it’s to “complicated” for a lot of players. Your team has to be smart enough to balance the orb and control points. If your team only focuses on one, you’re probably going to lose.

Pretty much it’s too difficult for soloq without any type of communication.

I heard about Skyhammer changes and I was excited, then I actually found out what the changes were and I’m disappointed again. Anet just doesn’t understand.

First you made it so Skyhammer is now dodgeable (not going to complain), but that wasn’t the problem to begin with. It gives you a visual and audio cue with more then enough time to get out of the area. The problem are the glass panels, which just need to be removed, sure you’re increasing the time for them to break, but this doesn’t solve the problem, it’s just a bad bandage fix.

The buff to Bane wasn’t needed and won’t change anything really. The Retreat buff is quite nice though, and you’ll see it more often now.

bunker with hammer ?

Hammer is pretty decent for bunker, it’s mainly there for the CC to help set up burst for your team, it’s also great for peeling. For bunkering I’d rate the weapons as followed:

Staff- Needs to be used if playing bunker, pretty much the pinnacle of support.

Mace/X- This gives you the most amount of survivability/support/damage.

Hammer- Like I said great for controlling a point and setting up burst for your team. Lacks the survivability of Mace.

Sword/X- This give you a bit more offensive pressure. An extra blind is very helpful, and Zealot’s Defense can be used both offensively and defensively.

Scepter/X- Helps apply some ranged pressure and with an immobilize. It’s very situational and only works with some comps and maps.

Greatsword- The worst bunker weapon imo, yet I still see people use it. Doesn’t really bring anything to the table besides damage (there’s the cleansing bolts combo with WW and SoW, but that’s pretty much it for support), and you’re a bunker so damage really shouldn’t be your main focus. Most of the time it’s just detrimental because all GS attacks are AoE and cleave so you just hurt yourself with retaliation.

However, it also depends on the types of bunkers there are some more offensive types like 0/1/6/6/1 with Soldier ammy, and you have more support types like 0/0/2/6/6 with Cleric ammy.

Greetings. I have a 35 Guardian that I want to level up in WvW rather than PvE. Any advice on which traits and wraps to go for early on to help leveling process?

I’ll be following the zerg of course. I’m assuming that I’ll want to try to max my survivability and being able to tag enemies and get the hell out of the way.

I haven’t had to level a lowbie since the new trait changes, so I’m not exactly sure how many trait points you have to spend. However, you can put one into Radiance for Justice is Blind, very helpful trait that will help with damage mitigation. Also one into both Virtues and Honor, then you can put two into Valor for Strength in Numbers.

This is a great guide, thank you for taking the time to put everything all together. I wanted to ask your opinion on a few things.

Recently in WvW I have noticed this shift where in roaming groups (at least in my tier) there is now this expectation that all guardians are running staff for Empower and Symbol of Swiftness, and that every guardian should have Stand Your Ground and Purging Flames. Personally I feel that in a small group Purging Flames is a waste since in order to get the full use from it everyone needs to be bunched together which almost never happens. I am also not a fan of seeing guardians being stacked in roaming groups for the sole purpose of providing group stability and swiftness symbols, it just seems like its pigeon-holing the class. I’m fine with popping in a staff before a fight for Empower then popping it out, but leaving it on and depriving yourself of a good weapon swap seems like a handicap that isn’t doing us any favors if you’re not using a support build that actually benefits from the staff. Again, this is over roaming not large group combat, staff has a good place there.

Purging Flames is generally better for larger fights when stacking is much more prevalent, for small group roaming you’re better off just going PoV with solider runes and three shouts. This makes it much easier to stay mobile and still help deal with conditions.

Also I agree that most Guard really don’t know how to use staff effectively. Most just spam WoW, and you’re really not helping at all. However, putting Sigil of Water on staff is a great way to add support. Since WoW has a large cone, it’s easy to get procs with it for extra heals for you and your squad. Also like you stated only time you really should be running staff, if you’re actually playing a support build. You could use it in a dps or hybrid build, but then it’s really not going to be as effective, and you and your team would be better off if you were using a different weapon.

Another thing about WoR most people don’t know about is it’s 360 degree protection. If you look at the wall you see a long rectangle that goes around the whole thing. As long as you stand in it, it’s 360 degree protection.

I like how Skyhammer and Spirit Watch aren’t good enough for teamq, so lets just throw them into soloq! Anet says soloq is “competitive” yet these maps are here. Which are obviously unbalanced or they would be in teamq and offical tournaments.

Competitive my kitten , all you did was take a horrible matchmaking system and throw in some garbage leaderboards.

Warriors aren’t that bad, generally I feel very comfortable fighting them, and if I lose it’s because I made a mistake or simply got out played.

Engi on the other hand is just a nightmare. If the Engi is within your skill range, they will win a majority of the time. Only thing you can hope is they make a mistake in their rotation or they are just less skilled then you. However, at least in WvW I can just run from them. In pvp you can’t, since it’s conquest.

You can bounce people around with hammer of wisdom and your hammer,block them with line of warding and ring of warding, chill… oh the chill, i love it XD Want to kite my hammer ? Nope, chilled. Want to get out of the teamfight ? Nope, chilled.
I think i will try a variation with soldier amulet, berserker gives you some nice precision but i feel too squishy with so little thoughness, maybe i’m too used to world vs world where you can have both :P

I have one question though, wouldn’t it be better to take defender’s flame instead of meditation mastery ? That way you can burn enemies when they remove your aegis and more burning is always nice.
You would get a slightly longer cd on renewed focus though, not sure if that could kitten your survivability :S

I don’t think the reduced cooldown on Renewed Focus changes much. It’s more the fact there’s no stun breaker. A CC chain from a Necro could see you dead in seconds.

It’s more than that, the build is just inherently flawed. No stun breakers with only one condition remover, which is passive, so you can’t even control it. Also add in the fact you have very little vit and tough with no sustain what so every.

So in a team fight your pretty much going to explode. Even in smaller situations you’re going to have a tough time.

Parts of your response are incorrect. Between the knock-backs, knock-downs, chills and immobilize there is CONSTANT up-time on your target. This build was designed for Solo Queue Bunker/Defender Assassination and it does it extremely well.

Other parts of your post are absolutely true. There is no stun breaker and conditions ARE a huge weakness of the build. The goal is to burn them down through cc/control to kill them before they kill you. If people deem it necessary, running a Barbarian trinket could replace the Zerker.

Remember, this build is an assassin, meaning you find a target holding a point and you kill them and take the point for your team. It’s not really designed for TPvP, though it could be worked in, it would work wonders as a target caller. I’d definitely run a Barb trinket in that situation though.

Someone asked me about Meditation CD reduction. Renewed Focus is a Med. Feel free to run Purity or Retributive Armor instead if you don’t like the lowered CD.

Ok so it’s pretty much just a funnies build that would work fine in hotjoin or at lower levels of play, but against any competent player this build isn’t going to work.

Also it would be better to swap out Grenth for Ice, Grenth is only an extra 44 burning damage, which isn’t much at all. At least with Ice you get a damage multiplier.

Some interesting suggestions, a lot of them of them are pretty decent and would work well. Others not so much, like the reworked Radiant Retaliation would probably be too strong.

It really depends on your comp and also the enemy comp. If you have lets say a bunker Guard on your team, and they don’t. Chances are pretty high that you’ll win the mid fight even if it’s 3v4.

Pretty much it’s all situational. Some times it’s good and others times it’s a terrible idea.

I’d say probably sometime early next year. Halloween stuff will probably start around the 15th, that will run until LS starts in November. That’ll keep people busying until December and Wintersday will start up.

So realistically I’d say early next year, hopefully I’m wrong and it’s released sooner. Maybe it’ll be similar to last years Wintersday when they merged it together.

Scepter/torch has much better synergy than sword/torch. For WvW/PvP a solid build for this is X/6/6/X/X, you can run both scepter/torch and sword/focus.

I enjoyed 8v8 for what they where. It was fun just to jump into a match, and just fight without worrying about winning. It wasn’t really balanced, but it was still fun. Sometimes I don’t want to do soloq or teamq, I just want to fight people without really having to worry about that rest of my team. Sure there’s 5v5 hotjoin, but that’s not as fun.

There’s a reason why we have “attitudes” like this. It’s been over two years of empty promises and false hopes (maybe a bit too dramatic lol). It’s just frustrating to see the game going in the direction it is. It has (had) such potential, just to see it never achieved and wasted. This is coming from the studio that brought you GW1 which had some of the best pvp out of any mmo.

Whatever the case, it’s kind of crazy that the OP can say “hundreds of players” and actually be in the right ballpark. If anything, that’s a sign they should give up on structured PvP entirely and focus on the populated parts of the game.

I think they already done this. They just focus primarily on LS and PvE. Once in awhile, WvW will get tourneys and a few updates. However, PvP has just been swept under the carpet. However you can’t really blame them. They still need to make money and a living, so they are going to do what is most profitable.

AH bunker is fine, however in 1vX situation it’s weak. AH isn’t that beneficial by yourself, only skill that has some merit is Empower. 0/0/2/6/6 has much better sustain in these situations due to the additional condition removers and boons/duration, and it brings more support. However it’s more susceptible to damage in team fights than an AH build.
