whats the lore behind revenant?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Healix.5819

Basically you can sum it up to “You are Revenant, because video game.”

Rytlock could have left the Mists in any timeline. They could easily say that he first appeared in the past, which created an alternate universe where everything that had already happened was set to repeat. He jumps into the Mists again during season 2, but this time, as a Revenant, he uses his knowledge to return to our time. These two realities merge into one, where existing players have our history, new players have always known Rytlock to be a Revenant and for NPCs, the strongest bond becomes dominant while the other fades away like a forgotten memory.

Because of what the Mists is, they could really make up whatever they want.

In short, Rytlock lived in the Mists for a time. Since time is nothing there, he could have been there for as long as you could imagine. Eventually, he learned to harness the powers of the Mists, calling on the champions of the past. See Razah as an example of something that was formed in the Mists.

Open “Computer” / “My Computer” / “My PC” or any folder where you can see your available drives. Right click the drive GW2 is located on, such as C:, and select properties. Under the properties, select the tools tab and click defragment now.

All versions of Windows within the last several years should automatically defragment your drives, so this may not be a problem. With older versions however, drives may become heavily fragmented, resulting in increased load times.

You should see every other MMO. Most MMOs disconnect their entire player base for hours a day every week.

Personally, I very rarely encounter connection issues in GW2, like once a year at most. The last time I disconnected was around 6 months ago when one of the servers was crashing, which they shutdown. I’ve never had a problem doing primetime Tequatl for example.

Season 3 question

in Living World

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

I wrote wrong. I meant we don’t know if you will need HoT to unlock the next chapters so that once you buy Hot you will already have unlocked them.

HoT features its own personal story. What they call it, you can only guess, but in terms of the story, it is season 3 (the continuation of season 2). You will get this unlocked whenever you purchase HoT, in the same way you get the original personal story with the base game.

After the release of HoT, the next season of the living story will begin. Anyone with HoT will be able to unlock it for free in the same way that season 2 was handled. If you purchase HoT late into the season, you will end up having to pay the price of HoT, plus 200 gems multiplied by the number of missed episodes (assuming they stick with that price).

What if… it’s a trap. If ArenaNet is going to retroactively reward players due the bug, that means they’re tracking it. Anyone with 30+ stacks is obviously leeching. Let’s see if ArenaNet takes this opportunity.

One day, hopefully they fix the contribution system. That day will be gloriously filled with complaints. Unfortunately, it will likely never happen for various reasons (too taxing on the servers, events won’t be casual friendly).

When stats were removed from traits, they were going to bump it to 10% but enough people didn’t like the change that they kept it at 5% instead.

It’ll probably happen eventually anyways however. The original plan back when ascended and infusions were first revealed was to offer progression through infusions, allowing for ascended gear to improve over time. You can see how they started with that plan when they added stats, but stopped early on. With raiding, they might pick it up again and offer +7 or so stat infusions, or keep it limited to raiding and offer something like +1% damage while in that raid. If they actually want to appeal to raiders, they’re going to want vertical progression.

And the error is still being unable to access Gw2.dat? That means Gw2.exe isn’t being allowed to write to the drive, hence why I said the desktop since you’re guaranteed to have permissions there. Ensure that you have free disk space and try disabling any anti-virus/security software that may be blocking it. Also run Windows update, just in case anything pending is causing problems.

To quickly test if any other programs are causing problems, press WindowsKey+R to bring up the run dialog and open msconfig. In msconfig, under the boot tab check safe boot and select network under that. Click OK and reboot. Your computer will start in safe mode. Try running Gw2.exe now. LS2 included in HoT?

Healix.5819

So HoT isn’t likely to be like $20-25 post-release, on the official website, or at least on G2A or any similar price?

HoT can already be found for around 20% off on sale on some of the (officially supported) sites. For veteran accounts at least, this will likely be the best deal we’ll ever see if you consider the $10 value of the character slot. After release, 20-25% off sales will become more common, but there’s absolutely no chance that you’ll see 50%+ off within the next two years, and by then, the next expansion will be announced and the price will reset.

Around 6-12 months into HoT is when ArenaNet will likely offer a sale of their own. They’ll either lower the price by $10 or keep it the same, but bundle in some gem store items in the same way they launched the heroic edition for the original game. They could bundle in season 2 with this “heroic” edition, but that would seem like a bad move as people would again complain about having to buy something they may already own.

As soon as the living story start backs up however, the money you would be saving is going to be lost the longer you wait. Assuming they stick with the same price and schedule, each episode will cost 200 gems and they’ll be released every 2 weeks. Several months after the final episode is when they offered the complete season with a 20% discount. Eventually, the price of the full package is going to outweigh the original price of HoT, until the next expansion when HoT is given away for free. If you didn’t know, for active HoT players, you simply login during the 2 week release schedule to unlock the episode for free.

In this case, rename Gw2Setup.exe to Gw2.exe and place it wherever you’d like to install the game, such as C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe, then run it. Gw2Setup.exe doesn’t work properly on some systems, which results in you seeing the login instead of the install button. You can’t actually login when it’s like this because it’s not functional and isn’t meant to be seen.

Do you recommend the 100$ HoT option (with 4k gems), or simply buying gems directly?

If you’re going to buy HoT and gems anyways, the ultimate is the best option since it’s basically the standard plus $50 worth of gems with the deluxe bonuses for free.

What happens usually on Black Friday? Does the game itself goes on sale, does the gems price themselves go on sale (from real money), or do just the items on the gemstone go on sale?

Gems themselves never go on sale as they’re treated as a currency. It’s possible to find gem cards on sale however in some stores. The only sales ArenaNet might do on Black Friday is for items in the gem store like they’re currently doing for the anniversary. The game has gone on sale in the past, but with HoT releasing in late October, it would be too soon. Other retailers may be offering it on sale however.

Gem conversion prices

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

The rate is determined by the players. As more people exchange gems for gold, the amount of gems you get per gold will increase. Gold to gems was never meant to be balanced around a specific target, it’s only the real money value that matters.

It’ll never be “fixed”, there is no limit and the rate will continue to get worse over time as gold becomes easier to acquire.

Back when the $10 sales appeared, you could make around 300-400 gems a month simply by logging in once a day and selling those rewards. Seems fairly casual, even considering it’s currently half that.

Paying for content?

in Living World

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

But this, paying for story, lore, is a bullpoop of epic proportions. Especially when you realize you had to log in for 2 seconds and that part of content would be free. I would understand if the reasoning behind such pay gating was “customer loyalty” or something similar, but the only requirement being a few seconds of game time, makes that untrue.

The reason is they want you to remain active. It’s better to have an active player base than an inactive one that pays extra. Without active players, an MMO is dead. Additionally, with the gem store being their main source of revenue, ArenaNet wants you to keep up with it.

According to HoT’s website, they’re sticking with the login or pay approach, but with the catch that you have to actually own HoT.

Bought new mouse, can't program buttons.

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Generally you need control software and the driver for the mouse. If the control software detects the mouse however, I’m guessing it’s properly set up (unless it’s cheap software). You can look under the control panel/system/device manager to see the driver being used. If you haven’t restart the computer after installing the driver.

Some control software will automatically change your configuration based on the program you’re using. Trying configuring a button as a single key press, like 1, then try to use that button in a program like Notepad or simply in your address bar. If it doesn’t work at all, either the software is bad or the mouse is. As an alternative, you can try using AutoHotKey to change the buttons, though if Windows isn’t registering those buttons at all, either the driver or the mouse is bad.

I hope we can level masteries without DE's.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

I am really not looking forward to farming more mindless zerg content just to get xp to lv up my masteries because you can’t level up the masteries in dungeons or anywhere that actually requires some team coordination and more thought than just mashing 1 and collecting loot bags in a zerg.

Since launch I’ve seen others cry out for more people when they already had far more than enough. If it’s not labeled as a group event, you should be able to solo it. If it is, 3 people is generally all you need.

To zerg is to intentionally play the game on easy mode. You do get more loot from zerging, but playing the content in a small group of good players can be much faster, safer and easier compared to carrying a bunch of dead players. With Silverwastes, they fixed the loot problem, though unfortunately they didn’t stick with it.

As for leveling masteries, as long as you’re doing the expansion’s content, you’re leveling the HoT masteries. In all other content, the Tyria masteries. If you enjoy mindlessly grinding dungeons, the alternative in HoT would be raids. There’s also the living/personal story, which you could grind out once on each character.

If you don’t buy HoT, you won’t be able to unlock the living story for free. Next expansion, the price of those missed seasons will be around the same price that HoT was at launch. Their new model simply makes it a single price to get started, but the actually cost will remain somewhat the same. Those that join in late or don’t bother to login however will end up basically paying twice.

If you choose not to buy HoT and assuming you want to eventually continue playing and want the living story, follow its development. Eventually those missed episodes will outweigh any discount you may find (assuming you see the monetary value in gems).

What is the reason there is no trade system?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Obviously, they can make a trade system easily, but why didn’t they?

Curtis Johnson

Hey guys,

The no face-to-face trade is a real decision and it’s primarily a question of trust (as many of you have noted). But it’s also a decision to protect players from scamming and protect the economy from black-markets. Let’s run through some quick examples.

1) Give something to my friend. – As several of you noted, target your friend, right click the item and select ‘mail-to…’. Done, this works in contact list, guild list, or in world anywhere without having to ‘meet’ them or ‘catch’ them.

2) Get a fair price for an item (anti-scam). – Because ALL trading goes through the trading post we can guarantee that highest bidder meets lowest seller and we can give every player the benefit of current market information.

3) Barter item-for-item. This is the grey area and also the most risky kind of trade because even with UI many items look alike in icon and many social engineering scams take place in this kind of system. It’s a risky trade environment which is why when you support it you have to have these multi-stage UI’s where everyone double-checks everything, and then eventually get’s lazy and stops double-checking and gets scammed anyways.

In the end we decided with super easy access to mail for trusted trades and trading post for untrusted trades that such a system wasn’t worth the risk, complication, and fragmenting the player market off of the trading post..

In testing we’ve found that mail is easier 90% of the time we’d want trade and the other 10% trading post is far safer and avoids drama and thing like random trade windows being thrown at you and lots of other unsavory hawking in game.

Hope that all makes sense.

… was the response in beta.

You don’t actually need to install anything. The program you’re using to view this is already capable of working as an authenticator.

Anyone else have the sneaking suspicion that some people are opposed to SMS because it will make it harder for them to steal other people’s accounts?

People somehow managed to fall for the in-game phishing mail, the one where you’re required to type in a long URL. If people can fall for that, they’re going to fall for the same thing that now asks you to enter your code 3 times. 1 code is required to login and 2 more are required to unlink the account.

This thread was about SMS with no exceptions. I can guarantee you that’ll never happen because not everyone has a cellphone or even a landline. There’d be too much backlash for no reason.

Rewarding single player content

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Adventures will be repeatable content designed for solo play. They’re only short tasks however and will likely get old quick since they’re easy to complete and the goal is speed running perfection.

Personally, I’d like to see the equivalent of raiding (“challenging content”) but for solo players only – like the Queen’s Gauntlet. Raiding simply doesn’t offer a challenge towards an individual, it’s only challenging to the group as a whole (there’s always that 1 person who fails). The problem with challenging solo content however is that if you’re not good enough, you’ll never be able to complete it, whereas anyone can get carried through group content.

It’s scaled to be doable with a single player

It’s not just scaled, it’s designed for a single player. Anyone that groups to complete the achievements is simply trivializing them, which is why they should be disabled in groups. It’s a shame that the hardest achievements can be cheated by simply grouping up and staying dead.

To make the living story repeatable, they just need to make the challenges repeatable with a pool of random rewards.

Why doesn’t WoW give away its expansion to players that had to purchase the previous expansions as well as pay $15 a month to continue playing?

New players will never get the same experience. A whole year of content has been lost and new players have to pay extra for season 2. Back in the glory days, only veteran players will remember trading 1g for 400 gems. With the addition of login rewards, you’re basically given a monthly income, which has already surpassed the cost of HoT if you consider the monetary value of those rewards.

Moving forward, their model will make a lot more sense. Next expansion, people will get HoT for free, but they’re going to basically have to pay the price of HoT regardless to unlock the living story. For those that buy and actively play HoT, you’ll be able to unlock everything for free. If you don’t actively login however, or you pick up HoT late into its life, you will be getting a bad deal though.
