Gaining and losing aggro
For a neutral (yellow outlined) NPC the player must attack first to gain its attention. The aggro table of a hostile NPC changes dynamically depending on a number of factors, in order of importance:
1. closest target to them
2. who is dealing damage
3. top damage dealers
4. who is using a shield / has more toughness and overall armor
5. others (see Tanking tactics below)
Yup the Greatsword is probably the best all purpose choice for general PvE. If you are dealing with larger crowds and/or need need more defensive support you can try Hammer which is pretty decent (kinda slow though). Sword+X doesn’t have the best damage, but it offers a good bit of utility if you spend the time to weapon swap and work in a rotation.
Turning with the mouse right click is the fastest and easiest way. If you have a mouse with extra buttons you could keybind Turn Left/Turn Right on it, but that seems like even more effort.
It might take some practice, but you’ll get used to it eventually. Compared to WoW, GW2 has far fewer skills which should make it alot simpler to manage. I use the Razer Naga (gaming mouse) which I find helps alot, but its not really necessary. You may just need to play around with your keybind settings to find what feels most natural to you.
These are my core keybinds:
W – Move Forward
S – Move Backwards
A – Strafe Left
D – Strafe Right
C – Dodge
V – AoE Loot
F – Interact
The default keybind for Turn Left (A) and Turn Right (D) are unnecessary and better slotted with strafe instead. Manually trying to turn is slow and its much more practical to use the mouse to turn instantly leaving slots (Q/E) free for something else.
Along with keys (Q/E) you should also have (R/Z/X) open as well. Use these slots to bind farther skills like (6-0) which are more out of the way to press. Having them rebound closer to your movement keys will give you greater access to them when you actually need it.

Storyline 27% – of the storyline level
Dungeon (storyline) – 70% of the character level
Dungeon (explorable) – 70% of the character level
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Experience
You should also be aware of Dungeon DR (Diminishing Returns)
Dungeon DR reduces the completion rewards for completing the same path more than once. Unlike other forms of DR, dungeon DR is account-based, meaning it cannot be avoided by running the same path on multiple characters. It works in two ways:
The bonus reward (40 tokens and ~1 –3 ) is only awarded once per path per day, resetting at the same as the dailies.
Completing the path consecutively or in less than 30 minutes triggers a second type of DR, which reduces the base reward for that path by half until reaching a minimum value.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Diminishing_returns
If you do plan to swap at end bosses its best to ask your group ahead of time to make sure its okay. I personally don’t mind it and most groups won’t care, but others may kick you as it can slow everyone else down.
You occasionally see guild recruitment in the LFG which I don’t particularly mind. As long as it doesn’t clutter the LFG panel its generally not a problem. I’ve never seen anyone trying to sell through there which seems like it would be against the rules. Since theres no real trading system it can lead to scamming if players start sending items through the mail.
I don’t think its possible. The best you can really do is minimize the windows by clicking on the title. If there are specific “Watch List” achievements you want to disable you can toggle them on/off by going into Achievements and clicking the (eye icon).
There is an old thread about this here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/archive/suggestions/Top-right-GO-away/first
Your only real option would be to either:
1) Save and buy it off the TP
or
2) Try your luck at the Mystic Forge
The Mystic Forge is a huge gamble so its up to you if you’re feeling lucky. The safest way would be to just save and buy it outright. There is the incredibly low chance you might come across a precursor from loot/chests/rewards, but the odds are slim to none and theres no guarantee it would be what you want.
Main-hand
Mace — Supportive melee weapon that provides AoE regeneration and blocking.
Scepter — Offensive, mid-ranged, spell casting weapon used to immobilize and smite enemies.
Sword — Balanced melee weapon with offense, defense and mobility.
Off-hand
Focus — Balanced weapon that provides supportive spells for both offense and self-defense, including condition removal.
Shield — Supportive weapon that provides local AoE projectile defense and protection.
Torch — Offensive weapon that burns enemies while cleansing allies of conditions.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Guardian
If you’re looking for a dual wield set just go with (Sword+Focus). It has the best balance of offensive/defensive abilities and are useful in all modes. The Mace/Shield are designed purely for defense/support which is more for PvP/WvW bunker builds. I haven’t really played around with Shield enough to know if its that good, but the general consensus is that Focus is better. Of course everything has its uses so just try things out and see what works best for your needs.
At the earlier levels you will be alot squishier especially on an Elementalist. You want to replace your armor every 5-10 levels or so to keep up with your zone level. Use gear you find as drops or you can buy some off level appropriate Karma merchants which are the Quest vendors with a small purple triangle. If you have the gold you can also buy some off the Trading Post, but it tends to be pretty expensive and you don’t really need it.
For starters you should understand the effects of each attribute which you can read up here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Attribute
In the beginning start simple by using gear that utilizes “Power” which is the general dps stat that increases your direct damage. From there you can add even more dps by either going the route of Critical damage (increased critical hit damage) or Condition damage (increasing the damage of conditions). If you feel that you want more survivability you can add in “Vitality” (increased health) or “Toughness” (increased armor). Once you reach 80 and learning proper positioning/dodging you shouldn’t need any additional survivability. Its fine in the beginning while you are still learning things, but its best to switch out of it asap as it lower your overall dps and can lead to bad habits.
As you level up further you will be able to use armor with more attribute bonuses: Level 1-20 (1 stat), 21-55 (2 stats), and 56-80 (3 stats). Ideally you want to be using Power/DPS stats in PvE and at your current level that would be “Strong” (Power/Precision) or “Honed” (Power/Ferocity). At level 80 you want to be using “Berserker” (Power/Precision/Ferocity), but you don’t need to worry about that just yet. Until you can start using triple stat gear you’ll want to mix some Precision (Critical Chance) + Ferocity (Critical Damage). You need to balance them out as its pretty useless having too much crit chance and no crit damage or high crit damage and no crit chance.
(edited by Highchu.3806)
I’m assuming you meant mentor? If you’re just looking for others to play with you should just try and find a WvW guild to roll with. If you enter the Eternal Battlegrounds without a guild tag you’re likely to get some invitations or you can ask around for one. Since you just came back you’ll want to just follow the zerg until you get to level 80 and collect all the necessary skills/traits/gear. Playing upleveled is a major disadvantage as you’ll have lower stats and deal less damage than true 80s. Just follow your commander which is the Blue Triangle “Dorrito” on the map.
1. Only you can figure out which class fits your playstyle the best. You can try out each class in PvP where you’ll have full access to all the skills/traits. It will give you a general idea of how it will perform in WvW.
2. You’ll earn Karma+Badges of Honor in WvW that can be spent on armor/weapons at the vendors. With Karma gear you’ll be limited to Soldier stats (Power/Toughness/Vitality) which isn’t that great unless you’re going for a bunker build.
With enough Badges you can trade them for (Soldier/Knight/Carrion/Cleric/Berserker/Rabid) gear, but they can’t be salvaged so any upgrades you put on them can’t be removed and would have to be overridden to use something else.
If you’re willing to invest the time to farm dungeons it’ll probably be faster. If you want “Berserker” gear farm Cathedral of Flames (path 1+2) and for “Soldiers” theres Ascalonian Catacombs (paths 1+3). Those two are the most beginner friendly so you shouldn’t have much trouble.
3. Unfortunately Necros are disliked in PvE, but as long as you’re doing your part you should be accepted in most pugs. You’ll probably have more trouble getting into speed runs/high level fractals though.
4. Since you’re mainly focusing on WvW you can decide by the server rankings:
https://leaderboards.guildwars2.com/en/na/wvw
Higher tiers will have larger populations and therefore longer queues. If you’re more hardcore go with a high tier and if you’re casual go with something lower. I think somewhere between T2-5 is pretty good.
5. By
exotics can be taken by gold
do you mean bought? You can acquire Exotic gear by buying them trough the trading post/dungeon tokens/crafting/random drops. Exotics is what a majority of players will be using at 80 with the only higher grade being Ascended which is only marginally better. The only real need for Ascended is for high level fractals where you would need the extra infusion slots for Agony Resistance. Otherwise its more of a vanity skin.
According to the wiki:

Gilded Coffer is a champion reward that’s dropped by Risen and Destroyer creatures of Champion or Legendary rank. It can be found with a rarity between basic and exotic and the quality that drops is determined by the level of the player and the creature that dropped it.

There are several variations so try them out and adjust them as you see fit.
Where did you hear about updates? Of all the professions I’d imagine Warriors to be at the bottom of the list. I can understand Thieves, but it seems like Rangers/Necros need it more.

April 15th Feature pack (Biggest Patch)
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/April_2014_Feature_Pack
World Bosses are now on a timed schedule which resets daily at 5pm PST. A new boss event starts roughly every 15 mins with the larger ones happening at the end of each hour. If you plan to follow the train its best to arrive before the event begins or you may be placed in an overflow map or miss the event completely. For Teq groups you want to arrive an hour early to guarantee successful run.

For the PvE armor stats I’m guessing you’re talking about Berserker (Power/Precision/Ferocity) which is what everyone uses. As for the FOTM armor its Ascended which are the only ones that can hold infusions for Agony Resistance.

Warrior > Necro > Guardian
Warrior – [High Health/High Armor] combined with Healing Signet gives you tons of survivability and healing. Even in full Berserker and taking heavy damage you’ll float around 50-90% health in most fights. The only real danger is getting overloaded with conditions and/or Poison.
Necro – [High Health/Low Armor] Deathshroud acts as a secondary healthpool when you’re in a pinch. You can also use the Plague Elite which will temporarily boost your (Power x2/Toughness x4/Vitality x3) for 20 sec. More of a burst survivability class as it lacks reliable anti-CC and mobility making it weak if focused down hard.
Guardian – [Low Health/High Armor] Lots of defensive boons (Aegis/Protection/Regeneration/Retaliation/Stability/Vigor) as well as reflects,AoE condition removal, and temporary invulnerability. Focuses more on party utility/support rather than personal survivability. Most skills are on a pretty long cooldown, but with good CD management its very survivable.
(edited by Highchu.3806)
Its only a matter of time before it gets fully repaired, but depending on how LS season 2 plays out it might take longer. LA did receive donations/relief aid from the Zephyrites, but with Mordemoths awakening a majority of the funds/manpower would be focused on stopping him. For the most part everything is available in LA, but I do hope they at least fix the kitten bridge holes. Aside from that I kind of like the war-torn look of it all.
Mr. Sparkles > Scruffy
“Flummox needed money Sareb sold the golem to Zojja, who has heavily customized it and currently owns it.”
I don’t particularly remember how strong the old Mr. Sparkles was, but if Zojja made modifications it must be powerful. Scruffy is used more for its utility and as a form of protection/transportation for Taimi. While Taimi may be smart she still can’t compare to Zojja in terms of combat experience or intellect.
Zojja > Taimi any day
(edited by Highchu.3806)
The preset runes are almost always bad so you’ll want to change them out regardless. For a Soldier’s dungeon set your only options would be from “Ascalonian Catacombs” or “Sorrows Embrace”. Acquiring the AC set would be the easiest/fastest, but in my opinion its super plain/ugly. If you already plan on transmuting it then it shouldn’t be a problem.
With the megaserver system, players won’t be separated into different copies of the same map based on the world they selected on character creation. Instead, you will simply arrive in a map and be assigned to the version of that map that makes the most sense for you as selected by the megaserver system we’ve developed. This new system takes your party, guild, language, home world, and other factors into account to match you to a version of the map you’re entering. This will increase the odds that you’ll see the same people more often and play with people of similar interests.
With megaserver technology, there are as many copies of a map as are needed to comfortably hold the population of players in that map at a given time. Rather than having a separate map copy for each home world and artificially limiting the amount of fellow adventurers you see, the megaserver system brings players together and dynamically opens up new map copies as necessary.
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-megaserver-system/
When players enter a zone, they are placed into the same instance as everyone else, until the game determines that the map is getting full, at which point it creates a new instance. When there are multiple versions of the map, the game attempts to put you in the same map alongside your friends, guildies, and members of the same world; in the EU, priority is also given to those using the same supported language, i.e. English, French, German, or Spanish.
If you find yourself on a different version of the map from the members of your party, you can right-click their name or portrait in the party UI and choose Join In [zone name]. If the map is full, you can keep trying until you succeed, as there are always people entering and leaving each instance.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Server
With the Megaserver system the your home server only affects which guilds you can join and the WvW standing/bonuses. If you are primarily a WvW player on a ghost server it might be worth transferring, but otherwise it won’t make much of a difference.

I guess Flesh Golems never learned how to swim. Luckily underwater combat is pretty uncommon and minions aren’t particularly useful so its not a big deal. It only seems right that “Thieves Guild” would work underwater with its longer CD and timed duration.
Maybe in the future they’ll give us more options, but lets be real Necros get no love.
A character can always equip two sigils at a time (either one sigil each on a main-hand and off-hand weapon, or two sigils on a two-handed weapon). In general, the two sigils will both provide their effects independently as long as the base sigil is different. The exceptions to this are the stacking sigils: only one stack effect can be active at a time.
Examples:
- A warrior is wielding a greatsword with both a Superior Sigil of Air (chance to deal additional damage to target on hit) and a Superior Sigil of Earth (chance to inflict Bleeding on hit) attached to it. Both sigils will roll their chance to activate on every attack the warrior makes, and each sigil will run its own cooldown timer after it activates.
- A thief is wielding a main-hand dagger with a Minor Sigil of Agony (5% Bleeding duration) and an off-hand pistol with a Major Sigil of Agony (7% Bleeding duration). Only the major sigil’s effect will apply, giving the thief +7% bleeding duration.
- A mesmer is wielding a scepter with a Minor Sigil of Bloodlust (gain a stack of +Power for every kill) and a focus with a Major Sigil of Perception (gain a stack of +Precision for every kill). The main-hand’s stacking sigil will take precedence, and the mesmer will only gain stacks of Bloodlust.

The cheapest method would be to get Dungeon armor. A good starter dungeon would be “Citadel of Flames” path1+2 being the most beginner friendly. Start with P1 and when you get comfortable enough try P2. I suggest watching some walkthrough videos online before trying them out. By completing dungeons you will acquire Dungeon Tokens which can be traded in for Exotic armor/weapons in Lions Arch. If you run each path everyday you can get a full set of armor in about 1-2 weeks. Weapons will also take another week or so. The Prefix you want is “Berserker” (Power/Precision/Ferocity) which has the best dps and is the go to PvE set.

Go with whichever you prefer. Both have a blueish-white glow which don’t really match that well with red armor. In my opinion Foefire’s Power looks kind of plain and Mjolnir is a bit too flashy. If it were between the two I’d probably go with Mjolnir since you never see anyone with one. Other Hammer skins I’d recommend:

Sword+Focus (Versatile)
Mace+Shield (Bunker Support/Healing)
Scepter+Torch (Ranged Offensive)
Main-hand
Mace — Supportive melee weapon that provides AoE regeneration and blocking.
Scepter — Offensive, long ranged, spell casting weapon used to immobilize and smite enemies.
Sword — Balanced melee weapon with offense, defense and mobility.
Off-hand
Focus — Balanced weapon that provides supportive spells for both offense and self-defense, including condition removal.
Shield — Supportive weapon that provides local AoE projectile defense and protection.
Torch — Offensive weapon that burns enemies while cleansing allies of conditions
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Guardian
You can mix and match, but the most commonly used set is (Sword+Focus) which is the most balanced in terms of Offense/Support/Defense. You can switch Sword → Scepter when you need that 1200 range. You really only use Mace in PvP/WvW in a Support/Bunker build where you want to be more defensive. For Offhands Focus/Shield are pretty similar, but I like Focus for the versatility. I haven’t really tried much of Focus so idk if its really that good or not.
Power Sigils:
Night (PvE)
Bloodlust/Force/Accuracy/Fire/Air/Blood (All Purpose)
Strength/Energy/Battle/Hydromancy (Utility)
Power Runes:
Scholar (PvE)/Strength (PvX)/Hoelbrak (WvW/PvP)/Melandru (Roamer/Bunker)
You can maybe make use of Baelfire/Flame Legion with a Dhuumfire burn build, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
“Stalwart armor is a mostly unobtainable armor set. The chestpiece can be obtained by completing the level 39 personal story step on any medium armor wearing class. Each of the 3 chestpieces offered have the same skin, so players can choose any of them. All other pieces of the set are currently unobtainable, except by players who unlocked the skins during the old PvP reward system.”
Check Dulfy’s Dye Gallery and compare color shades.

Looks like a Standard DS Crit build. It would work best in PvE dungeon/fractals and should do fine in WvW if you don’t mind being a glass cannon. The main changes I’d make being:
- Swap “Spectral Armor” for “Well of Corruption” when you don’t need it. Doesn’t seem worthwhile to bring Focused Rituals and only 1 well.
- Full Berserker trinkets for max dps. Necros are naturally tanky so you shouldn’t need Soldiers, but use it if you want in WvW.
- Use Rune of the Scholar/Strength instead of the Eagle. Scholar has better dps in organized groups and Strength for might stacking in pugs.
- [Optional] Swap a Sigil of Battle → Strength for additional Might stacking while in DS.
While I can understand Cleansing Ire being a bit too strong to be a Master trait simply moving it to Grandmaster will do nothing to balance it. Hambow will remain unchanged with the only difference being the order of Merciless Hammer/Cleansing Ire. With Defy Pain being the only GM trait thats really ever used moving it to Masters would be the exact same thing.
Once you open the Ascended armor chest the skin will be saved to your wardrobe and it can be transmuted. Unfortunately you can only use Cultural armor that matches the characters race/armor type.
Having high MF is one way of finding a Precursor, but a majority of them are acquired through the Mystic Forge.
“The output will be as specific as the input is. For example, if only weapons are used as the input, the output is guaranteed to be a weapon. Likewise, if only medium helmets are used, the output is guaranteed to be a medium helmet.”
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mystic_Forge
No idea what the person means by using the same sigil, but if you Mystic Forge 4x Daggers the output is guaranteed to be a Dagger as well. The chances are even higher if you use all Exotics rather than rares. Supposedly theres a “20% chance of returning upgrades of the next higher tier” which from experience feels more like 5-10%.
That’s what I’ve been using.
This is where I got with it.
Awesome! Inspired! Thanks!
Btw, do you know what Tage runs?
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/guardian/Tages-short-Spvp-guide/first#post4193021
- Wiki says any traits on your equipped weapon affect death shroud skills. So if you have Staff Mastery and have staff equipped when you go into death shroud, do you get 20% cooldown on death shroud skills?
“While in Death Shroud, upgrades, such as sigils, on the necromancer’s currently equipped weapon continue to function (with the exception of sigils that trigger on weapon swap). The weapon damage of the equipped weapon is applied to the Death Shroud skills, including any traits that affect the equipped weapon, such as Axe Training.”
Damage modifiers will still apply, but Staff Mastery will not since Death Shroud skills don’t count as staff skills.
- If you explode your bone minions, does that trigger the “on death” effect of death nova?
“Minions explode in a cloud of poison when they die. This effect also triggers when you are downed.”
Whether they die in combat or manually detonated it will trigger Death Nova. It doesn’t activate when going underwater though where the Flesh Golem just disappears rather than dying.
- When a skill says “life force: 3%” in the build editor, does this mean any hit with this skill fills the life force bar 3% of the total? If a skill can hit multiple targets, is this 3% per hit or just 3% for using the skill?
“Life force is gained when players or NPCs die nearby (approximately within a range of 1,200 units) and through certain skills.”
Its a percentage of your maximum LF pool and it is per hit.
- How does Deathly Swarm actually work? If you had four conditions (let’s say bleed, torment, burning and poison) on you and did an attack that hit the first opponent, bounced to the second opponent and back to the first opponent, what do the opponents have in conditions? (I’m guessing the first opponent has three of your condis plus a long blind and the second opponent has a blind)
The attack will bounce the skill damage and blind to multiple targets, but the condition transfer only applies to the first target on a successful hit. For condition removal/transfer the most recently applied conditions are affected first.

If you’re zerging a Power Wellomancer build would probably be best for group fights/tagging. Condition is still good with its added survivability + Epidemic for condition spread, but I think its better for small groups/roaming.
Power – Berserker (Glass Cannon) or mix in some Soldier/Knights/Cavalier for some extra survivability.
Condition – Rabid/Carrion
Carrion has better dps with the added Power, but I like Rabid for the added Precision to boost Barbed Precision and use on crit sigils. Still its not necessary since Condition damage isn’t dependent on crit chance. It basically comes down to personal preference.
I always carry a staff whether I’m Power or Condition. Theres just so much utility that its really a must have for group fights. As for alternate weapon sets the most common are:
Power – (Mainhand) Axe / Dagger + (Offhand) Warhorn / Focus
Condition – (Mainhand) Scepter + (Offhand) Dagger
If you don’t plan to make Ascended theres really no other use for them right now. You can refine them into (Bricks/Ingots/Stars) to save space if you have enough Karma for the Obsidian Shards. Unless you farm alot of dungeon/World Bosses you shouldn’t have too much Dragonite Ore/Empyreal Fragments stockpiled. Those being the most valuable and slowest to accumulate are the only ones really worth keeping. Blooststone Dust is so ridiculously plentiful theres no harm in deleting stacks if you don’t have the space.
Theres no reason to go with a condition build on a Guardian. If you absolutely must use a tanky armor set go with Soldier/Knights armor + Berserker trinkets. I’d go with Knights for the added Precision which will make it more viable for both PvE/WvW, while Soldiers is more limited to bunker/support. If you’re mainly focusing on PvE its better to just go full Berserker.
If you buy it the first transmutation is free and it will overwrite the previous look. The skin will be saved to your wardrobe and can be used again at the cost of a transmutation charge.
If you’re going to GvG you might want to consider using some Soldier/Knight gear over full Berserker. Even though Necros are pretty tanky with Deathshroud/Plague its still very susceptible to CC and often times focused first.
Ascii’s Wellomancer build should still work pretty well.

Once the skin has been transmuted the charge is consumed, but the skin will be saved in your wardrobe and can be used again without having to buy it a second time. To transmute a skin you’ve unlocked it will require a “Transmutation Charge” which is obtainable through:
Gem Store (150 for 5 / 270 for 10 / 600 for 25)
Black Lion Chest (Random)
Daily achievement reward (Random)
Map completion reward (1 per zone)
PvP reward tracks

PvE – Full Berserker Armor + Trinkets (Scholar Runes)
WvW – Depends on the profession/build.
Berserker (Glass Cannon)
Soldiers/Knights (Bunker)
Rabid/Carrion/Dire (Condition)
If you’ve stockpiled a good amount of Dungeon tokens visit the Dungeon vendors in Lions Arch [Postern Ward] waypoint to buy some gear. They are lined up in booths around the corner from the Trading Post npc. There you can pickup whatever Exotic armor/weapons you need. The trinkets you can craft yourself or buy off the TP.
Theres not much to really spend karma right now unless you want to make Ascended gear which will require you to buy “Obsidian Shards”. If you want the Temple armor skins you can buy them from the Temple vendors after they’ve been cleared. The stat spread on them are terrible so I wouldn’t recommend actually wearing them. They also sell Karma trinkets (Soldier/Cavalier/Rabid/Magi) which aren’t particularly good, but some builds can make use of them.
I haven’t tried the Engineer yet, but from what I hear its very versatile and with the recent buffs has become much more viable in PvE. The main turnoff being the sheer number of skills you need to learn and the high skillcap required to play adequately.
If you’ve ever made a Charr character before you’ll know whether its right for you. Most of the heavy armor sets will have tail clipping issues and if you like to use shields it may look like its floating in midair with the Charr hunchback. The body armors look pretty good, but imo the headpieces are pretty generic. Some will clip off your horns or show your Charrs face unlike on the other races (Ascended Visor/Temple Helm). The large size can also make it harder to complete jumping puzzles, but once you get used to it its not a bid deal.
When I made my Necro I originally planned on modeling it after Marjory, but by the time I hit 80 it seemed like too much trouble to buy the Makeover Kit/Trickster armor skin. The starter face options for humans actually look really nice so I’m pretty satisfied with the look. Most of the Female Light Armor sets are really good looking with my personal favorites being the Nightmare Court/Armor of the Lich sets. Both match the Necro look perfectly.
