That would be counter productive. The extra points available is to allow for flexibility in how/where people get the point. IF they wanted everyone to get all the points then there would only be exactly enough to max out everything.

That is my point exactly! They don’t want to do that, so they added extra. So can we get something out of those extras if they have no other use?

Um, that’s what “extra” means — that they are surplus to requirements (although you do get an AP each, so they aren’t worthless). Adding a sink for them would mean putting more pressure on players to get every last one. That’s counter to ANet’s intent — they just added 9 points to core Tyria specifically to reduce pressure.

Precision Blade Achievement Suggestion

There aren’t any classes for which the achievement is impossible, although there might be some builds that aren’t well-suited for it. QTFY’s list is for optimum builds, not “best” and not “only these builds work.” There are plenty of great builds that are sub-optimal and are better choices for some people, depending on playstyle.

In this case, I found mesmer was easier for me than other classes were, despite the low QTFY rank.

Best suggestion to increase outfit sales

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

The OP misunderstands the niche that outfits serve: because they are “seamless” and their own weight, they do not need to be compared with any armor skins or other outfits. They do not have “pieces”. There are therefore no such things as “outfit parts” and no way to determine which do or don’t clip — the things that are parts and have been determined to clip or not are called armor pieces and already available.

The point of outfits is that they stand alone. That’s why they take less time and that’s why ANet can churn them out quickly.

While some outfits do indeed fit this niche, many outfits have clearly distinguishable shoulder pads, boots, gloves, masks or helmets…

There have been many cases where I ran into another player and thought “those shoulder pads are amazing and would fit my character perfectly”. Only to search the wardrobe for half an hour without finding said shoulder pads before realizing they’re part of an outfit.

The model, texture and bone-weighting are already there. You just have to separate them from the remaining outfit (something that isn’t even necessary for the helmets), turn them into a standalone item and put them on the gemshop. I’ve done the process many times first for Oblivion and then Skyrim armors (replace gemshop with nexusmods).

“You just have to separate them” — yes, that’s the part that takes time. The reason ANet can spit out the extra outfits is because they aren’t separated.

[Bug] Not Getting Gerent Slayer Achievement

Some achievements & events have some wonky requirements when it comes to getting credit. The rewards can be sort of divided into:

  • Event credit (Bronze, Silver, or Gold) <- winner need not be present to win
  • Boss death loot (same as for any foe, only better) <- winner needs to return to the scene to collect
  • Bouncy chest (almost always after receiving event credit) <- presence not required
  • Ground chest (location of said chest varies) <- winner must be nearby to autoloot, otherwise must manually loot.
  • Achievement credit (the one of interest to the OP). The requirements vary and sometimes include being present at the death, although more often they do not.

I speculate that there is at least one set of circumstances for just about any major event for which you might receive all of the above except one. It will be possible in some cases to pin down the exact cause, but more often, … it’s not worth the player’s time to figure it out.

Instead, it’s much easier to do the event again. It’ very unlikely that the player will suffer the same unfortunate series of events and miss out.

(Of course, that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be reported as a bug — it might very well be. It’s more that the immediate need of the player is better met by redoing the event chain.)

If I get this xpac I’m going to make sure to ignore the mounts entirely except for the bare minimum of times I’m absolutely required to use them, and if anet categorically forces me to use them just out and about just to further the mastery along then I’ll go back to playing in core and HoT or not play it at all.

You could do that, sure. But why not take a gander at the preview (it’s free) and check out how it works. You might hate it, you might not.

There are all sorts of things that I expected to hate in GW2: guardian (because I don’t like soldier classes), mesmer (because it wasn’t GW1’s kind of mesmer), raids, jumping puzzles, adventures, and more. And most of these things are now among my favorite in the game (well, except for adventures; I still hate them).

I’m no fan of mounts. I’m just willing to set aside my preconceptions long enough to see what they’ll be like in GW2. I can always go back to being against them (or even hate them).

For the record, my sig shows the classes I main. I was simply noting that the info for Soulbeast seemed decidedly lacking.

You’re still reaching to find something wrong with the coverage, regardless of your mains. Why couldn’t it be that the various streamers have their own preferences and focused the most on the stuff that interests them? You’re ascribing a motivation to an entire group of developers and early-access fans based on hardly any evidence at all.

There are only 21 days between the announcement and the release. It wouldn’t be possible to guarantee everything gets identical or even equivalent coverage. In addition, we are getting a chance to preview much of it. (And I apologize: Inculpatus is correct that the elites aren’t available until the 2nd weekend.)

There are enough things that will break or be weird or go sideways, simply due to the complexity of MMOs. Surely we don’t need to borrow any trouble to add to that.

When you have 3 Icebrood hounds, a couple norns, a griffon or 2, maybe some spiders, and possibly an elemental, all of whom are aggroing you from there respective spawns because they are so close together, and all of whom are on very short spawn timers, then even with full ascended you have trouble. And this is NOT a rare occurrence or you dragging a train on this map. This kind of aggro density REGULARLY occurs almost anywhere on this map, especially around berry nodes.

I don’t remember any such spot like that. You had to have dragged them from multiple areas despite what you claimed. All of the spawns are decently spread apart and they have around a minute respawn. This is more than enough time to kill them all, gather berries, and move on to the next node.

Agreed. Unless you run blindly from spawn to spawn, it’s pretty unusual to be soloing more than 4 regulars plus a vet at once. With the increased attention on the zone for Aurora, it’s less likely that you’ll be alone (you can fight together or be able to escape more easily). If/when that interest dies down with new zones, then it will be even easier to avoid over-aggroing.

tl;dr be more careful when you run around.

Actually they are entitled to make the claim that failing to live up to their preferences breaks immersion (for them at least). Arenanet, owners of these forums, grants the entitlement to provide that feedback.

They are entitled to claim they don’t like it. “Breaking immersion” ends up depending on what someone means by “immersion” and what would qualify as “breaking” it. Personally, I think immersion can only be broken if the game itself contradicts itself too often.

For example, this game doesn’t break immersion with regard to cats being swimmers but not dogs, unless we bring our RL biases: in Tyria, feline animal companions swim and canines do not. So if this game includes huge wing backpacks or mounts in cities, immersing ourselves in this game means accepting wings and mounts.

That doesn’t mean anyone has to like it. It just means that “breaking immersion” isn’t going to be an argument that will help convince others that there might be an issue. If the goal is getting ANet to change plans, I strongly recommend choosing a different rhetorical technique.

Can't move L80 boost _between_ shared slots

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Illconceived Was Na.9781

So what would prevent me from moving around my “special slot” including the L80 boost then? In the end the order of purchasing the slots matters… it still feels kinda dumb.

The code could “simply” (quoted of course because I have no code insight at all) check for the target slot being another shared slot, excluding all other targets.

Perhaps it should have been setup interchangeably with the other slots. However, currently, it’s setup to be an independent slot that cannot be moved, not as a generic shared slot. Changing the status quo would take time & resources.

In the meantime, you can use the boost, accept the new L80 (or just gear for an existing L80) and get a new shared inventory slot, that is just like the others. If it bothered me that much, I’d do that… and in fact, that’s what I did when I bought HoT.

Raiding & Legendary Armor

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Illconceived Was Na.9781

For better or worse, ANet decided that legendary armor would be a perk of raiding. I don’t agree with their decision, but they won’t change their mind about it anytime soon — they’ve got too much riding on it and nothing to replace it as a raid-exclusive perk.

Raids are accessible to anyone who wants to put in the time and is willing to adapt to the team’s needs — for some, that might be too much time or too much adaptation, but that doesn’t make it “inaccessible,” just challenging.

I’m sorry the OP doesn’t like the game as much any more. I am saddened that they would let something they don’t play get in the way of the things that they do like. That, however, isn’t nearly a good enough reason for ANet to invest the huge amounts of time it would take to change how l-armor is acquired and the top perk for raiding.

GW2BLTC confusion

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

The main reason to look at the charts is to get an idea of trends. Are current prices going up or down? do they fluctuate generally? are price changes related to supply|demand changes or part of an ebb|flow that happens normally.

For high volume items, like metals or cloths, there’s no meaningful difference between GW2BLTC’s approximations of trades and the actual trades on the TP. You don’t have to make allowances.

However, for items that don’t sell often, you have to use some personal judgment. With things like legendaries & precursors, you know that few will sell each day. You also know that people will frequently overcut each other on buy offers . So take “bought” with a grain of salt.

On the other hand, for legends, “sold” is going to be close; it will miss someone selling direct to an overcut within the 5 minutes between the script checking the API, but that’s not going to happen that often.

In short, you don’t need to worry about the distinctions for high volume. For low volume, use what you know about the market to make allowance for the limitations of the data collection methodology

NPCs haven’t used them, why should we?

NPCs don’t use waypoints, or revive orbs either. I take it you’ll be following that precedent?

Actually they have used asura gates (waypoints are too pricey). Revive orbs are an outside-canon game mechanic. And in HoT, the only mounts I see were a specific couple of mordrem.

The point is: I didn’t feel any game need for mounts, the way some people think that all MMOs should have them. I wasn’t against mounts in games; they just made little sense for this one.

Even more to the point, you cut off the rest of my quote. Despite my lack of interest in them, I’m willing to wait to see how they play out in PoF before passing judgment on them as being worse or better than gliding.

It’s a special slot, because the insta-L80 is tied to it. Consume it and it won’t matter.

In other words, think of it as if it’s not yet a shared slot; it’s the holder for your booster. When you consume the booster and accept the new L80 as permanent, that “fake” slot is destroyed and replaced by the shared slot.

Otherwise, you’re asking ANet to do some tricky code so you can choose to put off using the insta-80 indefinitely.

Why aren't Anet adding playable races?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

From what I remember, almost non of the NPC dialogue is race specific outside of the beginner story.

So really, besides creating the same race specific intro that each race has to a new race, which would be expected, there wouldn’t be anything different to a new race.

They would however, have to pay new voice actors. Which well, they already do, adding all the new NPCs, bosses, and storyline stuff. What is 1 more? Especially if you want to grow your game, which makes your game more viable for different people.

  • Voice actors, 10 per story, in addition to the ambient dialogue; that’s much, much more expensive.
  • Test animation of all weapons, skills against male|female of new races
  • Get all existing outfits to work with new race
  • Get all existing armor skins to work with new race.
  • Also spend more time on armor skins (and a bit on weapons) for the new race.
  • Personal story for the new race.
  • Home city for new race.
  • And more that we don’t even know about that affects things behind the scenes.

All of the resources required to the above already have steep competition from other good ideas and ‘demands’ of the community, so choosing a new race reduces what else ANet can deliver in terms of features.

Now, ANet could certainly choose to ignore some of the above, but then we’re talking about a low-quality version of a 6th race, which would make it less entertaining.

Then there’s the benefit. There’s no question that people will flock to any new race day one. But later, people will quibble about combat, about skins, about clipping, about voice acting, about customization. Some people will never play more than one toon of the new race; some won’t play any.

So the costs are enormous, the resources compete with other ideas, and the benefits are short-term & limited to a narrower fraction of the player base.

Obviously, new races are popular enough that ANet has and will continue to consider it. But it’s not going to happen in this expac and almost certainly not in the next.

When it was in beta, I got better performance. However, mileage varies so much from machine to machine, that it won’t help you to know. It’s possible for it to help 98%, provide no help to 1.9%, and you might be in that unfortunate 0.1% that have worse performance (although that might end up being something adjustable on your end, rather than the “fault” of the game).

FYI PoF ‘requires’ 64-bit, so if you have interest in that, I’d forget 32-bit altogether.

Gliding Vs. Mounts?

How do you feel about mounts vs. gliding?

Roughly speaking, isn’t “gliding” the same as riding a mount? It’s a way of getting from A to B that isn’t walking.

If mounts are as fun as Spiderman Webbing Oakheart’s Reach, then I imagine most of us will mostly have fun with them, too. And I’m sure that we’ll still be able to enjoy gliding; it just won’t be required in PoF zones.

I enjoy gliding for travel. But from the gameplay video’s I’ve seen, mounts are going to be required for a good bit of travel in the new maps.

I also don’t look forward to the addition of yet more gimmicks to the game:

I still don’t understand where you see a difference. We can’t get around some of HoT without gliding; we won’t be able to get around some of PoF without mounts.

I’ve never been interested in mounts for GW2 (NPCs haven’t used them, why should we?). But the fact is: they are here. Let’s first see how they are before we try to be so sure that they are bad for the game or even bad for us individually.

Upcoming Stat Changes in the Q3 Balance Update

So raids will be 16% harder… Ty for killing my motivation. Just made 6th viper set, so that when i do raid I would be fully geared nope.

Also with the addition of power precision ferocity AND condi damage gear, ty for combining that with viper. It’s a kill to my gear, as that Grievers gear (of what the name is) is new meta… Ty Anet.

So in conclusion: 100% condi duration (clearly meant to be achieved by lots of classes) is killed… ty so much anet. And you think power has just as good food? Power has some things that are really strong for it (like decreased stun duration) wich is useless for most condi. This change is just a overreaction to the current raid status. (and making raids actually worse).

why not just chill for a lil bit and wait for the rest of the balance changes

We only need chill for 16% less time, too.

More seriously, it’s hard to know the impact of balance changes until they are actually in the game. And more importantly, the hardest part of raiding is learning mechanics. That’s why the “best” teams can manage with fewer than 10 or with sub-exotic gear. It might make some encounters more challenging for some of us some of the time, but it’s never going to be the difference between success & failure — that is a matter of us learning the fights.

Then they have the option of spending a mere $US30 on PoF, which includes the core game. If they want both expacs, they can save some by buying both together for $50.

  • PoF: US$30 (also €30, £30)
  • For deluxe (skins, character slot, identity repair kit, VIP lounge): add $25 for ~$35+ worth of upgrades.
  • For ultimate (4000 gems plus deluxe stuff): add $25 more (i.e. pay $50 to get $50 worth of gems plus $35 worth of upgrades).
  • For HoT: add $20

It’s already the 2nd of August .. is there going to be an Anniversary Sale this year?

Usually its a new item being sold each day until the end of August?

You might have noticed that there are a few other things going on right now.

Our new spec is really underwhelming compared to like the Holosmith or Weaver and Dragonhunter was already one of the weak, if not the worst, elite spec introduced into this game.

We can’t possibly have any idea before the expac launches how this is going to turn out. Before HoT, there were complaints from fans of every class. No one predicted that mesmers would be well-suited as tanks or how useful GS would be to necro condi builds.

Even if there were anything to the OP’s worries, there’s six weeks left until launch. ANet isn’t going to be making any substantive changes now. They’ll take some feedback in 10 days after the trial run and they’ll pay attention to how people actually use the build in the first 4-8 weeks after launch.

Until then, instead of trying to find something to complain about, try looking for ways to make the new elite shine. It is there that we’d find if there’s an issue or not.

As Khisanth suggests: maybe it is intended, to make it easier to seek out & loot Zinn’s stashes in Draconis Mons.

Preset Builds / Templates

This is needed soon.

You mean, this is 4 years overdue, right?

Isn’t the game near 5 years old?

Yes. At launch, however, ANet outlined some reasons why they didn’t want to include build templates. I won’t restate them here because (a) I disagreed they were important then and (b) even ANet no longer supports them. The point is: they had reasons (even if bad ones).

Since then, several devs have admitted that they themselves would like to have templates. Somehow, it has never been a big enough priority to go from “good idea” to implementation. I think they keep getting stuck with how to handle gear (but since GW1 didn’t handle that well either, I think they should avoid worrying about it).

So it might be that this less than 4 years overdue, but (from ANet’s perspective), it hasn’t been 5.

Exclusive items in PoF Del and Ult edition?

Generally speaking, I’ve found little use for pre-order bonuses after the first few months. However, during those few months, they can be very useful.

For example, early on, there were very few glider skins, so those who invested in a deluxe game got a chance to to reskin sooner. I imagine we’ll see something similar: newer (perhaps even more useful) exclusive crafting/banking areas, more convenient to the new stuff, but… not when the game launches. Sunspear skins will probably be available as part of the story meta, but… it will take most people a while to get them.

In short, I’m assuming that there will be a short-term benefit to have the deluxe items.

And as someone else said, go Ultimate if you have ever bought gems for the game — might as well get them now & get the deluxe goodies, too.

I put mine in the shared inventory slots. I’ve made it a routine to double click them when I start up a toon and again before I swap out. It’s a little extra trouble, but well worth it so I don’t have to carry tools in anyone’s inventory.

I’d like it better if there was a way to avoid micromanaging them, but for now, this is 3000 gems better value than not having the tools. It’s very convenient (and ultimately saved me a lot of inventory space, plus time that I don’t have to spend at the vendor).

I see them a few times a month, not more. For some reason, they don’t stack with the ones available from the guild commendation trader in the gh.

GW2 Tax and Australians: Path of Fire.

I was shocked that we were being taxed here. It increases the cost of the expansion by10 and 15 dollars after tax and currency conversion respectively.

You expect ANet to lower the price for Australians so that they pay the same? They’d have to increase the base price for everyone and pay DigitalRiver extra to figure out how to collect & pay those taxes, so that the price was identical (save for currency conversion, which is its own headache).

In the US, tax is charged differently based on location. Some states tax sales of digital items; some don’t. I will probably pay more than some of my friends because of that.

That’s just a fact of living in countries that charge taxes: we have to pay them.

Buy legendary or Expansion

Once you have the legendary, you will see that it was money burnt/time lost.

I’m sorry you don’t like your legendary weapon(s). I happen to love mine; they were absolutely worth the effort, because I chose not to spend my time farming, but did stuff for fun. Everything in this game generates loot (except sneezing and chatting) and all loot can be converted to gold, to pay for stuff I might need for a shiny.

Of course, I wouldn’t blow US$100 on a skin, because it probably wouldn’t mean much to me as a result and I’d get many more hours of fun out of a new expac than out of any skin.

I love the breakbar mechanic. I think it makes most combat much more interesting and appealing. So I’m hoping there are just as many uses for it going forward.
