https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Call_of_the_Mists

All PvP game modes, does this include WvW and EotM?

“PvP” is one of those terms that has more than one meaning and which one can only be determined by context.

  • In generic usage, “PvP” means any area with player-vs-player competition. In GW2, that includes WvW. In other games, it arguably includes so-called PvE zones, since players might (in those games) compete over nodes or be able to steal loot.
  • In specific usage, “PvP” means only “Structured PvP”, which is meant to include just the single game mode in which one small, player team competes against another for short matches, with pre-defined rules. Arguably, WvW is just “structured” differently.

Similarly, “WvW” also has two meanings: one that includes Edge of the Mists (for combat mechanics, builds, etc) and one that does not (people hardly ever mean “EotM” when they are discussing “WvW rewards” etc.).

tl;dr whenever you see “PvP” or "WvW’, assume the most-restrictive definition, unless the context clearly shows it’s meant more generically.

Gathering tools not appearing in the Hero: Equipment panel.
Tools can only be changed or equipped by dragging directly from the inventory window onto the tool slot. Tools cannot be dragged from the tool slot into the Equipment panel either.
Broken only recently.

I can’t replicate your experience:

  • I’m able to equip and unequip via right-click via [H]ero/Equipment panel or [I]nventory window.
  • I’m able to equip by double-clicking from either window.
  • I’m able to equip/unequip by dragging to/from either panel or window.

I also tried to duplicate the issue and wasn’t able to. If someone seeing this has the time (and patience), maybe they could upload a screenshot or two to show the steps they are taking. Maybe there’s some minor difference between what I’m doing and what others are doing that can cause them to see this behavior even though I do not.

Well, this time I was able to duplicate the issue using a mystic kit. I’m trying to determine under what circumstances it happens and haven’t found a pattern..yet. It might be happening just after getting a rune, but I haven’t done enough testing to be sure.

Just wondering what people think from the final beta. In your opinion, do you think HoT is ready to go live from what you experienced?

What we experience isn’t a reflection on whether it’s ready for release. You can have a smooth BETA and a terrible launch or vice versa. I understand why people are concerned, but even if everyone on the forums asked ANet to postpone the launch, I can’t imagine they would do it. It would take some catastrophic issues for them to change the date at this point.

Idea: Gem Store Voice Packs

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I’m all in favor of the idea. Unfortunately, I don’t think it will happen, since the costs would far exceed the revenue.

Unintuitively, voice packs are very expensive. There are are a huge number of bits of dialogue, extended scenes, etc. In addition, there’s ongoing QA for a variety of situations. Plus, if ANet keeps with the living story, then they need to find actors who can commit to additional recording sessions. Not to mention, if the actor and/or director misunderstands something, you end up with something like Trahearne channeling Eyore, which isn’t suitable for an epic figure (that voice actor ended up re-recording the old scenes, etc, which imo helped enormously).

In short, I suspect that voice packs would cost more than ANet would get in cash from folks who would be willing to pay for them.

The fact is that thieves need stealth to stay alive.

How is that “a fact”? It’s common for players to use stealth as the primary mechanic in a number of situations in all 3 game modes, but it’s hardly the only tool in their belt. Use the BETA to see what other tricks they have up their sleeves.

So about silk

Illconceived Was Na.9781

What exactly seems to be the problem here?

I’ve always presumed that this was more of a conceptual issue rather than an economic one: many people think that parallel items should have parallel supply/demand curves (and therefore similar prices). Also, a great number of MMO veterans are used to acquiring mats on their own; they don’t agree that it’s preferable to be able do whatever content they like and buy the mats with their coin, rather than be locked into foraging on their own.

In other words, it’s not that people don’t realize that a stable, high-priced silk market can be part of a healthy economy; it’s just that they don’t like it that way.

Dungeons are designed to be done by 5 people, however most can be done by one or two if they know the mechanics and their professions. Even if Raids were designed to be done with Ascended, it seems likely that they will also be doable with exotics.

So how about if we wait to find out if Raids actually are gear-gated before discussing whether ANet should adjust other mechanics.

It’s fun to watch people making all sorts of assumptions about the state of the game based on what we’ve seen in BETA. We can say that some things were so badly bugged this weekend that they were disabled; we can also say that the vast majority of things were working as intended, including 10 new professions (well, 9 elite specs with new mechanics and weapons, and one actual new prof).

It’s entirely possible to have a flawless BETA and a terrible launch or vice versa. I will wait to see which sort of launch we have before passing judgment.

[SUGGEST] Salvage Kits should stack.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Is there any reason why Salvage Kits do not stack to 250?

Tradition, i.e. probably because this is how most RPGs have handled limited-use items. Plus, technically, these aren’t set up as individual items; each kit (or gathering tool for that matter) has charges, which are diminished by each use.

So I’d rephrase the question as: why doesn’t ANet consider changing these from single-items-with-charges to stacks of single-use-items? Probably because at this point, it would be incredibly costly in terms of QA (if not actual coding) — there are so many different bits of the game that assume that these items are charged & non-stacking, it is a small nightmare to make sure that each is addressed.

tl;dr these items don’t stack because no one thought to make them like that in the first place and now, no one wants to deal with all the potential bugs of changing that.

[Suggestion] Better dailies!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Maybe we should start by being sure we understand what the issue is before declaring one system better or worse.

I personally find [dailies] boring, uninspired and fairly unrewarding. Also there’s a sense of anti-climax after I’m done with it.

If I understand the OP correctly, they find the current pool of dailies to be less interesting than earlier iterations. I suspect even some ANet reward designers agree with that.

How about Anet dig up some of the old dailies we had in previous iterations like daily killer, dodger, critter killer, crafter etc and bundle them together with these we have today into a randomized pool that would rotate continuously throughout the day.
You’d still get your Daily Completionist after finishing 3, but in this case you’d be able to continue after that point.

If I understand, the proposal is to extend the pool of dailies to include older options. Further, instead of offering just four per day per category, the game would keep offering you an additional random option, each time you completed another.

I don’t think the proposal addresses the issues raised by the OP:

  • People were mostly bored of the old dailies, too; they were just different sorts of tedium, i.e. how is killing 25 critters better than completing 4 events?
  • This doesn’t improve the rewards, which are already more substantial than we got before (i.e. only one reward per 5 dailies).
  • I don’t see how this would reduce the “let down” after completing dailies.

Further, I think the proposal introduces new issues:

  • There’s a balance problem, since it doesn’t scale well to PvP or WvW, which offer fewer types of ‘original’ challenges.
  • It introduces a new grind, for any who are interested in maximizing rewards. Right now, we are limited to 4 rewards/game-mode; this would increase that.

tl;dr I agree with some of the OP’s criticisms; I think the actual proposal makes things worse rather than better.

I’ve checked the wiki and the like, but I cannot find an answer of whether or not the other parts of the key are still obtainable in some fashion or not? Does anyone know for sure if they other key fragments are still obtainable, or was this just an unlucky drop during the event?

You could have gotten the other colors during the event (via the bloom vendor, who sold an item allowing you to choose a color). As far as I know, there aren’t any current sources.

Previously ‘on heal’ effects always triggered when the ‘6’ skill was used. The (6) bonus for Centaur runes was only situational useful before this change; it’s hard to imagine that ANet thinks it’s worth it now.

Who 'owns' Guilds??

Illconceived Was Na.9781

First, I’m really sorry that this happened to you. It’s always a terrible thing when a guild — designed to be a way to enhance the enjoyment of the game, via an organized community of like-minded people — becomes a thing that makes the game less fun.

There’s no simple answer to your question. The short story is: it doesn’t matter any longer; the situation has become toxic. I recommend that you decide whether you want to fight for the principle or be practical and look for (or found) a different guild, where your efforts will make more of a positive difference.

In particular, you are left with only a few options:

  • Quit the guild, letting others know that you are starting a new one.
  • Quit the guild, and join another one with less drama and a more robust leadership.
  • Stick with the guild and accept that the founders aren’t appreciative of your efforts to maintain the guild.
  • Stick with the guild and be bitter.

In terms of ownership, there are lots of ways to look at it:

  • By ArenaNet’s standards, no one “owns” the guild. It’s managed by anyone who has the relevant permissions.
  • By political standards, anyone who has been running the guild is, well, running the guild, with a “possession equal to nine tenths of the law” sort of scenario.
  • By personal standards, guild creators are considered to have special ‘rights’, even if they haven’t been responsible for the guild’s recent successes.
  • By social standards, those actually responsible for the guild’s recent successes are considered the true leaders.
  • By martial law standards, whoever kicks disruptive guildies “owns” the guild.

Now if they were new designs I might understand the cost increase but these are last years designs. So I cant figure out why the increase now.

Whenever ‘seasonal’ skins are brought back, the price has been 2 tickets. This was true for 2014 Wintersday and Halloween and also the Lovestruck.

Time to nerf SW farming and more guild stuff

It really is disproportionate reward for the effort put in – its kept people logging in and playing every day but once HoT arrives they should nerf it.

The claim is it’s disproportionate for the effort. What exactly does that mean? And are you referring to chest farms only? Or any of the various other farms that people do? How much wealth is too much? How much effort is it really? What does the average person make? How much do the top 10% make?

Without discussing the terms, it’s not a very useful starting point for a productive discussion.

I was very obviously comparing it to every other method of making money in game (except TP). If you don’t know what disproportionate means type it into google – it has nothing to do with absolutes but is a RELATIVE measure.

Drooling on the floor is not a useful starting point for a productive discussion.

I think you’ve missed the point: the term “disproportionate” has no meaning without a discussion of the amounts. You can keep throwing it around and suggesting people look up the meaning; that still doesn’t establish whether Silverwastes farming actually fits the definition.

How much do you think people earn from equally-aggressive farming of various nodes, Orr, dungeons, world bosses, PvP daily rooms? And how does that compare to Vinewrath, event, and chest farming in the Silverwastes? At what relative amounts does it become “disproportionate”?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Illconceived Was Na.9781

ANet has said that they are balancing the game so that elite specs are competitive with other specs. In the past (and in the future), people have always gravitated towards specific builds emphasizing just a very few of the possible permutations, i.e. there’s always a meta. The future meta might include the elite specs, which still won’t mean that they are “required,” only that a lot of people prefer them so strongly that they don’t consider other options.

tl;dr no, they won’t be required by the game; some players might act as if they are required (but that’s already true today).

I don’t agree.

I think the game can and probably should include limited amounts of content that not everyone can enjoy. Currently, this already includes the seasonal JPs, fractals, SAB (well, when it was in the game), and even dungeons (yes, Virginia, there are people who can’t manage dungeons without a lot of help).

Should ANet provide other ways for people to experience parts of the story? Yeah, that would make sense. I don’t think that means they need to create multiple levels of difficulty for something designed to be truly challenging.

Will ascended crafting change?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There’s only a time gate on the crafting materials. You are more than able to fast track the entire process by simply buying the finished Ascended mats on the TP, so it isn’t really time gated to craft pieces if you wanted to knock out an entire set in one day.

What I recommend is:

  • Put in aggressive buy orders for the time-gated mats you need.
  • In a few days, you have all you need.
  • Continue to craft your own time-gated stuff, but now sell at aggressive sell prices.

That ends up breaking-even at worst and often making some coin, except if you are unlucky to buy right after a market spike (and sell after it renormalizes). Even then, the premium you spend is pretty low, compared to crafting it all yourself.

An alternative is borrowing the time-gated mats from a close friend, who is willing to take a 1:1 replacement over time. I’ve done that a few times — the mats aren’t making me any money while they sit in my bank, so I’m happy to lend them out.

Balance Patch Frequency is Unacceptable

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

For some reason, Anet seems to work under this methodology that balance updates should be approached very conservatively and should occur very infrequently. I assume they think it’s because you need to spend a lot of time evaluating the meta before making changes.

You think they should “aiming”, let alone “readying”? That seems like a surefire road to disastrous changes. It takes time for the community to get used to the post-rebalance reality and incorporate the changes into their gameplay. It takes longer for people to figure out new tactics and new responses.

If you think ANet is bad at rebalancing, reducing the time between skill updates is just going to exacerbate the situation. (It’s like when politicians complain about our schools doing a poor job and then wanting to extend the school year.)

I think the first step in improving ANet’s rebalancing efforts is to provide specific feedback about the kinds of things they do well and the stuff they tend to do poorly. Help them to do a better job of adjusting things first and then we can ask them to do it more often.

What GW2 needs after playing Wildstar

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I don’t understand how this is a major issue:

  • With a few exceptions, hearts only require a small number of actions.
  • In most cases, doing the heart at the same time as someone else (party member or not) tends to spawn additional foes, giving all those nearby additional potential for progress.
  • Hearts aren’t required for anything in the game other than map completion. They are an inefficient method of karma acquisition and slower than Dynamic Events for experience boosts.

When the game launched (and we were all inexperienced), my guild used to run around maps to explore and it took us only slightly longer to get 10-20 people heart completion than it would have to have moved on after the first few finished.

Despite the above, I’d have no objections to making the change, if it were easily done. However, any change to a fundamental mechanic ends up costing a lot of dev resources: introduce new mechanics, balance them to fit with the game, try to think of ways that they could be exploited or ‘gamed’ and prevent them, ensure that the change doesn’t have an unintended impact on other parts of the game, and then create a new protocol for testing it against future changes.

tl;dr the benefit seems small compared to costs.

  • The Black Lion Chest has been updated. Keys are available in the Special category of the Gem Store for 125 gems.
    • Tradable finisher unlocks have been added to the Black Lion Chest as rare drops. To discover which finishers are available, check the unlock instructions for each finisher in your Hero panel.
    • Metabolic Primer, Utility Primer, Guild Influence, and Boost Enchantment Powder have been removed from the Black Lion Chest.
    • The drop rates of all miniatures in the Black Lion Chest have been reduced.

A lot of folks that were hoarding keys in anticipation of a change used them after the patch. I imagine that the new finishers (with high-gold value) probably also encouraged some folks to buy keys with gems (although, the gold:gems exchange rate didn’t change much, so that might not have been a big deal).

According to Reddit posts by Dulfy and Wigglecandy, it seems the drop rates didn’t change that much for anything except account-bound minis.

It sounds like there’s some sort of connection problem between your computer and ANet’s database — when the server loses track of your location, it plops you back in a default location (or sometimes a previous saved spot).

You should try repairing your .dat file (instructions on the wiki).

It really would address a lot of complaints.

It would address one of the complaints. However, it wouldn’t generate the same income for ANet. People already buy gems; ANet also wants them to spend on the game and in particular, to buy HoT (so everyone is playing mostly the same game).

10k influence for 1 favor…. so its no..
5500 influence for 1.5g for now .. guess if we want guild catapult we will need to exchange it now?

can any admin pls explain how do we get guild catapult after expansion? thanks.

They are covering guilds for the rest of the week. We might find out what stuff we can build.

I think there’s also a good chance that we won’t be able to create some of the stuff that’s currently available.

They aren’t changing the data — only the interface. There’s no reason to worry.

Allow sylvari glow change in hair kits

I think the fundamental point is that the hair kit functionality can create a situation in which hair colors don’t match other things. Should ANet change this? I dunno, seems like a lot of work for the benefit. On the other hand, it would make a lot of people happy, whether they have the infinite-use kit or the finite ones.

Direct Damage Nerfs (Bad Idea)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I completely disagree with the OP’s premise and therefore with the conclusion — I think it’s perfectly sensible to reduce damage on skills that are overpowered.

I think the OP has conflated a bunch of vaguely related issues:

  • Nerfs to skills that were overpowered.
  • The current meta, which is primarily due to the AI and encounters designed around that AI.
  • People who think that zerker matters more than skill & experience with the dungeon/fractal.
  • People who think that zerker doesn’t speed up runs, for those who know what they are doing.
  • ANet changing things up with HoT, including introducing new encounters, foes, etc.

Put it all together and it suggests to me that there’s no reason to suppose that it’s a bad idea to nerf direct damage skills that are unbalanced compared to other skills.

Invest in Silk

For what it’s worth, the price of silk has gone up only about 30 copper/scrap. The price of linen (also needed for ascended gear) has not changed — like silk, there was a demand spike; unlike silk, there was a supply spike, too.

Might as well close the topic I just saw the wiki page I was on before mentioned that monthly is merged with daily.

I wouldn’t close it — you’re not the only one hitting the cap this month and not realizing it.

Guild Mission/Favor problem for 1-2 p guilds

The premise of the OP is that all content in the game should be available to everyone, regardless of playstyle, skill, or frequency of participation. This has never been entirely true and it’s becoming less true with HoT.

Some players like this philosophy; some don’t. If you’re in the second category, I recommend you consider adapting to these sorts of changes rather than getting frustrated by them.

In the specific situation:

  • Almost the entire core-game is suitable for small guilds, including 2-player guilds.
  • Almost none of the core is designed for large guilds.
  • HoT will include some content that is designed for large guilds.

In other words, small guilds are only theoretically prevented from easy participation in a tiny amount of the game. I think that’s a reasonable compromise.

They’ve never been worth buying keys for, and the recent patch that apparently raised the loot drop rate of chests and keys only appears to be working for chests….
/

There’s no evidence for either theory: there’s simply no data published at all on the number of keys per kill or even keys per loot-picked-up. Heck, hardly anyone has even tracked the amount of loot compared to the amount of kills, never mind the distribution. No one published this before the patch; no one has been publishing since the patch.

Admittedly, collecting the data is a lot more work than any of us would enjoy doing and there’s not necessarily any sort of benefit to the researcher, outside of contributing to SCIENCE.

All we have are anecdotes of people who don’t remember getting keys before who got some now and lots of people who still aren’t seeing keys. All that tells us is that the drop rate was too low to notice before the patch and it’s still too low to notice now; it doesn’t tell us anything about whether keys are dropping more or less frequently.

No VOICE But Squads Completely "Reworked"?

TS is a disaster for many – thumbing of noses at devs and anet’s abuse rules in general are being ignored by not being aware of, and in control of, voice communications.

Even console games which have much less memory but far more graphics can handle a voice stream, which is a very small ding on bandwidth – it’s just aonther sound so I’d like a switch turn off music or any sounds necessary to have voice capability.

Anet? Please, move MMOs forward where they should be.

Give us voice capability soon.

You are comparing apples to… sheep.

  • Reworking squads requires a new UI and a few new mechanics, mostly making use of existing in-game technology.
  • Adding voice stream requires adding the equivalent of an entire new bit of client-server architecture, additional server infrastructure, and the QA/configuration management support to go with it. On top of that, it requires ANet to also provide customer service for anything that happens in voice.

It’s far, far easier to let people arrange their own VoIP solutions.

they can clearly see your PM,but can they see in-game e-mails too?
Just asking,so i dont write anything important there. =)

Are you asking whether someone from ANet can read stuff you’ve written? The answer is: yes. Emails, chats, etc. It’s all saved forever and they can go back at any time.

I believe that they have set it up so that most people do not have the power to read and that most who do are only able to do so if there is a specific reason, and only look at specific parts of the ‘log’.

Still, the tl;dr is you should assume that Big Brother can see everything you do.
