It feels like a needless waste of time especially when refining stacks of materials.

I agree, +1.

It’s a needful waste of time, not a needless one. The idea is to slow down production so that refining or crafting items requires some time investment and therefore has marketplace value. You’ll notice that the more you refine, the faster it goes and the lower-level crafting is faster than higher tiers; that’s all part of a deliberate design to add value to the process.

Why does the forum even need a censor anyway? Especially one as draconian as this?

If you have to ask, you probably won’t agree with anyone’s response. Forums are used by everyone of all ages, maturity levels, etc. It’s reasonable for the owner for the boards to put limits on the tone and tenor of the speech.

I don’t agree that the chat filter is “draconian” — it’s just old school; it cannot easily distinguish subtleties of English (or French or German or Spanish).

Worlds are just a convenient way to group people in permanent teams. There’s no way to have consistent matches and build up team loyalty if anyone can swap in and out easily.

Thus in order to remove “world” as a requirement, ANet would have to completely change the way that WvW works. I don’t think that’s practical.

twice-told legend

Illconceived Was Na.9781

The entire reason for twice-told legend is a consolation prize for people who made two before the wardrobe — at that point, it was the only way to dual-wield legendaries (such as bolt).

So, no, I think it would be a terrible idea to make it easier to get that particular achievement differently. I’d far prefer that ANet work on newer achievements and introduce more achievements that will not be accessible by everyone.

I have several items in my bank that are soulbound to a character that no longer exists. Could you look into making these accountbound and then soulbound on use when a character is deleted?

If they are very valuable or hard-to-acquire items, contact support (by following the links from the top left of this page) and ask if they can help. If they aren’t valuable, then I personally find it easier to delete them rather than worry about it.

Removing Twice-Told Legend: A Grim Picture

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Everyone realizes the removal of Twice-Told Legend also tells us the game is going to increasingly be more about Ascended Gear, Legendary Gear, Legendary Weapons, and a gear-ceiling in general, right?

Not only this, but it means we’re seeing the focus of this game become raid content oriented. If you are interested in ‘finishing’ a character so you can play without the pressure of other players cutting you out of content Anet’s just decided to go one step further in making sure that’s how the game will play.

Remember when exotics were the Gear Cap? Then it was Ascended that was going to be the Gear Cap? Promises.. promises…

Why not use the money we give you for something more enjoyable than a perpetual Gear Ladder to climb. Every MMO, but one has done it. No one likes it and you won’t be thanked for it.

This is a title invented as a consolation prize for people who made two legendaries before the wardrobe — that was (at the time) the only way to dual wield legendary swords, daggers, or pistols.

Since then, given the drought of new AP sources, more and more people have acquired two just to get the title.

And finally, as others have stated, we’ll still be able to get it, just not with the new legendaries.

tl;dr the OP might want to rethink the entire post.

it’s not Mac-specific — it’s a bug with a certain combination of graphics settings

You’ll have to experiment to figure out which setting it is; I know that it’s not specific to a particular computer or GPU set up.

It might be reflections or anti-aliasing or shaders or something else (or some combination). If you can get to that fractal with a group of friends, ask them to wait so you can see what it might be.

I only ran into myself recently because I had to use a laptop while my computer was getting fixed and it only happened after I changed a bunch of settings, which is why I’m so sure it’s not mac specific.

good luck

PS your English is fine; I had no trouble understanding (and if you hadn’t mentioned it, I would have assumed just the usual amount of typos etc of most of us posting on the internet).

Delay listing fees for TP

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Is it a good idea to waive the listing fee until the item is either sold or when the player remove it from TP? Suppose you got something that can be sold for 1k gold, but darn now you gotta wait till you find that 150g just to list it. I understand listing fee acts like a quasi gold-sink, but postponing it won’t make any dent on that purpose, will it? either way the player will have to pay that amount, and moving that charge to the end of the transaction makes it easier to sell.

I like the idea of making it easier for poorer players to sell stuff if they get a lucky drop. I don’t think there’s any good way to do that without allowing richer and market-savvy players the ability to take advantage of the mechanic.

Put another way, I think it would be a lot of work on ANet’s part for something of limited value to a limited number of people. I think the current system is sufficient for the moment.

Because they didn’t think of all the ways in which people might use the /block list. Fixing anything in the game requires dev attention, QA time, etc; this one is probably lower priority than other things, so it might not get fixed for ages.

Customer Service has fixed it for other people.

The other thing you could try is to get another Light of Dwayna recipe (via trusted friend or buying your own). After you stack a tradeable recipe with a bound one, both will end up being unbound and you can sell yours again. Obviously, that presents some trust, risk, and logistical issues, so it’s better if you can get CS to work with you.

To max out one mastery we will need to grind out 17mil xp.
What happened to no grind? I have been looking forward to this expansion for months now a week before launch i find out this.

The don’t “grind it out.” Keep in mind that before specializations, you gained a skill point every 254,00 xp, so a million is equivalent to leveling 4 times. 17 million is leveling up < 68 times, i.e. similar to leveling up new toons now.

There are only three ways they could have set it up:

  1. Drastically reduce the amount of XP to max.
  2. Drastically increase the number of masteries, so that you have to choose carefully.
  3. Keep the number of masteries manageable and require 17 million ish xp.

(1) would mean people would level up fast and run out of things to do. (2) would mean having to make tons of spreadsheets to keep track of the different options, something that seems to be unpopular. Or (3), the current system: a manageable number of masteries with high XP requirements.

Do you have a fourth alternative that offers the same degree of customization, doesn’t get fully maxed by the “fastest” players in a few days, and remains something we can manage with the types of UI we see in the game?

Reverse Maize Balm Griefing

Illconceived Was Na.9781

It’s one of the few situations remaining where there’s competition in PvE. I love the concept of turning ambients into loot-bearing foes, but maybe ANet needs to reconsider the impact and make some tweaks — decrease the time before ToT-bag DR sets in, reduce the # of ToTs dropped, give the transformed elementals some health and armor, so that they don’t die as easily, limit the number of transformations that can happen, or perhaps create a second type of ambient that won’t die unless transformed and limit that type to small pockets in each zone.

tl;dr it’s okay to farm ToTs; it’s okay to farm weapon chieves — what’s not ok is griefing someone trying to do either.

This game badly needs server merging

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Especially since they have overflow servers, why in the hell do we have so many servers when the majority of them feel incredibly dead? Wvw especially would greatly benefit from merging especially since even the high/full servers have nearly empty maps much of the time. Having coverage/people actually playing in the maps that exist would be nice, and yet anet is adding more to spread the people out even further. I want to play this game, but I find that the player activity is just.. very low. Too low. People are too spread out as a whole and it just doesn’t feel busy.

Merging servers won’t have any impact on PvE at all, due to megaservers — there are only as many instances of any specific map as there needs to be.

For WvW, merging servers won’t have the impact you are hoping for. People gravitate towards certain servers for various reasons, both good and bad; as long as those reasons aren’t affected by merging, people will continue to do that. At best, we might have 4-5 months before a new, similar status quo sets in.

Right now, there’s no reason for anyone on a ‘full’ server to pay gems to leave, except if they have a ton of friends who also WvW and can’t get in. Entire guilds might move for various reasons, but often they are subsidized by the destination server or provided with other benefits that aren’t a direct part of the game.

Consequently, it would be better for the community if ANet did more things that affected the incentives and disincentives for moving, especially to convince small guilds to move from high-pop worlds.

TP Item search improvements

In fact, flipping happens all over in real life and we just don’t see it most of the time, because it usually doesn’t happen on the retail end.

  • Candy is “flipped” in movie theaters — it’s bought from a different set of distributors and offered at premium prices relative to the cost.
  • Amazon market place is full of folks that sell stuff available locally to them for cheap and sell it at a huge mark-up, to folks that can’t get it where they are. For example, Trader Joe’s doesn’t ship their own products.

You could claim in both those cases that it’s not “flipping”, since there’s a “service” provided, the convenience of not having to get the item on your own. Well, that’s what flipping is in this game: people buy items from folks who want coin now and aren’t bothered by pricing and sell to folks who want their items now, and are willing to pay extra.

tl;dr it’s a mistake to think that “flipping” doesn’t provide a benefit to the community as a whole — and that’s without considering the value of sinking more gold out of the economy with every transaction.

ANet isn’t likely to want to build a system themselves (look at how much trouble they have doing the TP interface; I can’t imagine they’d manage anything close to a social media level of polish). They also don’t want to depend on too many 3rd party solutions, because it hampers their ability to grow the game.

The company is just big enough that we definitely expect such things from them, but they really just have the one franchise — that means they can’t really afford the bells and whistles that other publishers can afford to bring to their games.

tl;dr I think we aren’t going to see many changes to mail. However, we will see more changes to the guild panel, so consider proposing things that will help make that tool able to cover some of the same requirements.

Running speed in and out of combat

Illconceived Was Na.9781

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Movement_speed
it’s a 40% reduction to forward movement speed when in combat (not side or back)
it’s so that, when you’re in combat, you have to deal with it instead of just running away.

Is that officially anet’s goal? The wiki states the outcome but not the reason. I would really like to know their rationale behind this. Does forcing your players to fight (even if, perhaps, they don’t want to in some circumstance) really make the game more enjoyable? Considering how many options there are for escaping from a fight, nerfing the speed seems kludgy and kind of a punishment for engaging in the activity, rather than rewarding it in some way which would encourage people to stay in the fight longer.

Yes, that’s pretty much the reason. The idea is, if you don’t want to fight, stay out of combat (turn off auto-attack, avoid foes, be careful on slopes, …).

The alternative would be slowing down movement speed overall — the current out-of-combat speed is far too fast for combat. And that would be much less fun than the status quo.

ANet Failing to Support Community

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I disagree strongly with the OP. I think the changes to dungeon rewards are because ANet has listened to the community:

  • We asked that rewards be commensurate with the difficulty
  • We asked that ANet introduce more challenging content.
  • We asked that ANet disrupt the reasons we have a zerk meta.

The introduction of Raids and the change-up to Fractals tackles the second two; moving the rewards from dungeons to Raids & Fractals handles the first. In other words, ANet is giving us more challenging content (in theory, anyhow) and they are shifting the gold rewards accordingly.

To expand on Scribe’s excellent post:

  • ANet tried to offer advice to reduce account theft; that didn’t work.
  • They tried to make it obvious when ANet was sending official mail (and what it might contain); that didn’t work.
  • They tried putting restrictions on guild banks, on new players, etc; that didn’t work.

In the end, they have been unable to reduce account theft because the most vulnerable step in the process has been the account owner’s security — not everyone, of course, just far too many.

The TTL chieve was designed entirely because people actually created double-dagger, double-pistol, and double-sword legendaries — prior to the wardrobe system, that was the only way to have your main- and off-hand match.

Thus, it’s hardly a surprise that it’s still only possible to do with the old legendaries.

So dungeon rewards... why?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Illconceived Was Na.9781

People forget that when the game came out, dungeons offered very little reward and people complained about it. People forget that they asked ANet to offer better rewards with more challenging content. People forget that they asked ANet to nerf the zerker meta.

The PvE rewards aren’t being ended — they are moving from dungeons to other content, thus giving us better rewards for the (theoretically) more difficult content.

It’s going to take some getting used to and who knows if ANet’s implementation of this will be as good as they seem to think it is.

tl;dr it’s too soon to tell if this will be good for the game or not; it’s not too soon to say that it fits in with what players have been asking for (in a “be careful what you wish for” sort of way).

Dungeon nerf and TP flipping

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Every item should become account bound once you purchase them, lets kill trade post flipping and fix the economy and with that GAMING EXPERIENCE!!!*

This won’t have the result you expect. Instead, it will cause the prices of things to go up more quickly. Flipping is only possible when you have impatient buyers and sellers, who want immediate fulfillment of their orders. If there’s no flipping, you’ll still have impatient traders and very quickly, the prices will rise as there will not be enough unbound supply to satisfy the demand. → flipping helps drive the buy offers closer to sell offers.

In addition, flipping removes an extra fraction of gold from the economy (as Wanze explained above). Oversimplifying: low-ball seller pays 15% and the flipper pays 15% (given the margins, this probably means about 5% more gold removed than without flipping). This adds up — the GW2 economy has one of the best gold sinks of any MMO.

tl;dr removing flipping will hurt everyone this suggestion is designed to help

As a side note, it will also give power traders an advantage: I guarantee that the most effective flippers in the game already know several ways they can make money if those goes through, thus giving more power to those who understand the economy and taking away the power of the vast majority of people who could care less.

tl;dr hoarders are selling off their stored items in anticipation of presumed changes, before the market drops even faster.

I started selling off low-drop rate items a few months ago, since ANet has been telling us for nearly a year that they plan on messing around with acquisition. I sold skins that only appeared once, power cores, and so on. My profits were plenty — and would have been higher if I had waited, except I knew this day would arrive and didn’t want to risk the chance of losing it all. (As I did with e.g. the Mystic Forge Conduit and Eternity.)

This week, with J Smith’s announcement, a lot of people are expecting the same thing and are selling off low-drop rate and other scarce items in the expectation that prices will drop quickly once the new economy is in full swing.

This might turn out to be a mistake, but in the meantime: I have the extra gold and I can afford it.

I love fractals. I find the mechanics more interesting than dungeons. I find that it presents challenges we don’t see much of anywhere else. And I like the (current) fact that most of the people I know are learning along with me.

In terms of gearing up, I’ve only used simple infusions until I got to doing L30+ and by that time, I had enough mats to infuse a few items and combine +1 ARs appropriately. With a utility infusion in your amulet, you can get +25 AR easily, which is good up to L30, without ascended armor or weapons.

Once you infuse rings (and a backpack, Mawdrey being the cheapest to infuse), you can add +10s (slowly to be sure), taking you up to +55 AR, which is good until L50.

Key drop rate change. 4 weeks review

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There’s no way that a small number of players can determine how much the drop rate for keys has changed:

  • We know it was too low to easily measure before the patch.
  • We can see it is still too low to easily measure now, after the patch.

So all we really know is that it’s low, low, low, low. (Maybe lower than that.)

To seriously measure the drop rate, you need to know how many drops a player might have. I don’t know anyone who measures that for more than an hour at a time and I know very few people willing to do even that. The thing is, you can do map completion for hours without killing that many foes, a full day’s worth of dungeon run (which has very few kills), or a ton of world bosses (also with very few kills). In contrast, you can spend an hour farming in Orr or the Harathi camp liberation chain and get far more kills.

In either scenario, any single player is only getting a hundred or two potential drops at most, so it’s unlikely that the vast majority of folks would see any keys dropping. Unless, of course, you think that ANet decided to make the drop rate for keys as common as ordinary exotics — and that’s also something that most people don’t see every day.

tl;dr we don’t have enough data to compare drop rates for keys; we don’t even have enough data to make reasonable guesses, except to say it’s really, really low.

This affects other salvage kits as well, including the Mystic Kit.

Prior to this bug, there was a feature|anomaly|bug in which right-clicking the kit from inventor to ‘use’ would leave the kit in the bank afterward. I found this handy when I only had one item to salvage, since I typically want my o-matic to rest in the bank. Others find it annoying.

Expanding on IC’s response: the forum error messages are not always that helpful. They sometimes correctly identify that there’s an issue, but incorrectly state the reason. So even though the reason you PM didn’t go through might be due to a full mailbox, a block, or too many other people messaging the same dev, you still got a message saying you alone were sending too many messages.

tl;dr ignore the text of the error

Guild Halls for Free Players?

Illconceived Was Na.9781

can we log in – log out inside the guild hall without being kicked ? pretty much like the Permanent Royal Terrace/airship pass work today ?

Speaking of which, can we “assume” that Royal Terrace and the Heirship will continue to have (a) all of their current services and (b) relevant HoT services (at least for owners of HoT)? Or do we need to start making other arrangements to have access to the guild bank?

Thanks

I agree with Rose: I know people with babies, ill pets, or aged parents — they will step away from the computer with nary a peep to attend to something urgent and sometimes not return for hours. When they remember, they will [f12], so their character isn’t at risk. However, most of the time, they can’t be bothered.

Guild Wars 2 Inflation Research

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Inflation is a measure of the cost of affording the necessities of life: food, shelter, clothing, transportation.

  • “Food” isn’t required in this game, so inflation = 0
  • Shelter isn’t available; inflation = 0.
  • Clothing: unlike RL, this is bought once and lasts forever (until you upgrade). No easy way to measure inflation for it.
  • Transportation: cost of using waypoints has never changed. Inflation = 0.

tl;dr “inflation” isn’t a useful tool in measuring the difference in costs for players in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015.
————————————————

You could, instead, look at the total cost of acquiring certain useful and not-so-useful things. For example:

  • Outfitting a new L80 in full, crafted exotics.
  • Unlocking dyes for a 5-character account.
  • Outfitting at least one character with an AR=70 set of gear.
  • Completing any BL weapon collection.
  • Completing Treasure or Exotic hunter collections.

Turns out: some of those have gone down in price and some have gone up.

It’s a bit “boring” to play the event after Xmas, in January. Well boring is the wrong word, it’s not as fun.

What do you guys n girls say?

I’d say it’s a fun festival, regardless of when it occurs.

"Critical Hit" quotes on the wrong flag?

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Critical_hit#Player_chatter

The voice of the player character is heard saying those lines when the PC is struck by a critical hit. The wiki used to include a line commenting on the anomaly, but it was removed by an anonymous editor, without comment.

Yeah, i wanted to dive into gw2 again but this random appearing black screen keeps me away from doing that.
Please tell us how we can help to fix this issue…

Whatever was going on 10 months ago (when this post was created) is different from whatever might be going on now. I strongly recommend starting by working with Customer Service to troubleshoot the issue — follow the links to create a ticket starting with “Support” on the top left navbar of this page.

Botting still an issue?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The game will always have botters, for any of a variety of reasons. They were easy to spot when the game launched; they have evolved since and try to avoid spots in which they are likely to get spotted. If you run across such spots, then you’ll probably see more bots/day than in highly-populated areas.

It resets at the times nottsgman (and the wiki) lists for server reset. It’s not a full seven days, at least not according to various people who tested it.

Suggested Miniatures

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Ah. I wasn’t looking for a joke thread.

It isn’t a “joke” thread — it’s a serious request for minis with silly names. e.g. wouldn’t it be fun to have an LFG advert asking that players display Mini Max?

I don’t care if these end up in the gem shop, as in-game rewards, as RNG drops, or contest rewards, so that’s why it wasn’t added to the gemshop suggestion thread.

Ability to buy favor with gold

The current influence-to-gold system has the problem that no restrictive cap is there. That is the reason why large guild have so much advantages regarding this aspect.

Large guilds never buy influence with gold — they get plenty from daily attendance and from player activities.

Diving goggles bug at Skrittsburgh

Done this jump about a hundred times and it never gives me credit for the jump, nor does the goggle transformation leave after the jump. Anyone else have this issue?

How can you be sure that it’s this dive that you didn’t complete? It might be one of the other three dozen dives. You can get credit for a dive even if you don’t get changed out of your swimsuit.

As far as I know, the only way to be absolutely sure you have credit for all the dives is to re-do them systematically (and especially with a mesmer, so you can repeat the dives quickly). Ideally, bring someone who hasn’t done any dives and make sure they keep the achievement on their watchlist, so you can see exactly what triggers a successful dive for each individual location — a lot of spots are quirky about your jump-off location and/or about where you land.
