Gems and Gold (and Time)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

This is why I’m asking, how much of an impact would there be? There’s got to be some kind of happy medium somewhere, right? Or maybe the medium is already there and I just wasn’t aware.

The original post assumes that selling gems to get gold on the exchange is a problem and it also assumes that the economy is broken; neither is a good assumption based on the evidence we have to date.

  • There are always players that purchase gold. In other games (including GW1), they are purchased on the black market from those who “illegally” obtain that gold, e.g. bots, account thieves, etc. GW2 reduces this pressure by making it easy on player who want to spend less time on the game by allowing them to purchase legit gold via gems.
  • Although many people have stated their believe that gem→gold exchange inflates prices on key items, but there’s no evidence that this is true. Nearly all prices can be simply explained by the usual supply|demand mechanics of any substantially free market. The exceptions can usually be explained by known market forces, independent of the exchange.
  • Similarly, the claim that the market is broken is typically offered without evidence. What people typically mean is that the stuff they want to get is priced higher than they think reasonable, a matter of opinion that can easily be both true and false, depending on who is making the statement.
  • In a truly broken market, it would be difficult to obtain most items or sell unwanted ones, to get the coin used to pay for the wanted ones. Of the over 20,000 items available on the TP today, this is only true for a handful (mostly due to individual ANet mistakes, which they claim to be rectifying soon).

tl;dr the market isn’t broken for the vast majority, the gem<→gold exchange is good for the community on the whole, and so removing it from the game would hurt more folks than it would help.

Best server for Australian Players

Hey guys,
I have just returned to the game and it appears Sea of Sorrows if full now, so my friends who want to start the game cannot get onto Sea of Sorrows with me.

I am hoping someone might be able point me in the right direction for another server with a healthy Australian/Oceanic population.

Thanks in advance

Choice of server doesn’t matter except for WvW — you are automatically put on the same map as party members in PvE. All the Tier 1 and Tier 2 servers have reasonably high Aussie/Oceanic pop, so for WvW fans, the choice is more a matter of style and philosophy. Do you choose a world that with nearly-full pop for max action? Or one that is merely-high pop for later flexibility (i.e. when more friends join later).

tl;dr I think you and your friends would be happy with FA, SoS, or TC.

400 gems for a bag slot is ridiculous...

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I understand that ANET has to make money (believe me, I’ve given them plenty), but 400 gems for one bag slot for one character is crazy. I think the fair thing here is to make bag slot purchases account bound.

Personally, I’d love it if the additional slots were applied to all characters, or, at least, to the same slot (that is, I could re-roll and enjoy the slots on the new character). However, my understanding of “ANet has to make money” leads me to believe that a “fair price” is whatever ANet believe will generate the most income — it’s a convenience item; it makes my life easier to have the extra slots, but the game works just fine if I don’t have them.

I commend the OP’s duprass for establishing and upgrading their own guild hall. That is indeed awesome and deserving of praise, etc.

I am less fond of the OP’s post and especially the title. Instead of saying, “stop complaining, you lazy sourdough batards — it’s not that hard,” the OP could have simply said, “here’s how to build up a two-person guild hall” or “my two-person guild prefers the new system because…” and explained how you did it. There is no need to diminish the efforts of others or to brag about the accomplishment.

The coins in dry top resetted for me. The achievement is still there, but it is annoying to see the coins everywhere…

It’s a visual bug — it happened on occasion pre-HoT and went away if I changed toon or left the area. For now, I’m just going by the collection system, which at least gives a number for each coin (still trying to figure out which # matches up with which # on Dulfy).

Heck, I got a free shuttle to LA from Malchor’s Leap last night, despite being there like an hour.

It’s a DC thing, not a JP thing, I think.

Yeah, it’s a DC thing. It seems to happen when the server loses contact with the client while it’s updating your location (or something like that). In effect, the game doesn’t know where you are supposed to be and defaults you back to LA. (Not sure why it can’t look to where your last “known good” location, but… then again, I have no idea how it’s programmed so maybe that’s not trivial or it’s simply more reliable to put you in a safe spot.)

But yea, that still doesn’t exclude the fact that the bug is present. I know devs have many “more important” bugs and issues to address but it is shame something this “small” (maybe its actually really complicated bug) is taking them so long to fix :/

Great! Glad you made it through.

Gold farming,best way?

in Players Helping Players

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Silverwastes farming is still kinda okay, but how does TP actually work to make me profit?

If you know how to use the TP to profit, you can invest time & materials and earn money that way. Check out gw2shinies.com and use the “tool” menu to see some of the methods, including flipping, material promotion, etc.

However, I never recommend the TP as a “best way” of gold farming, because, for most people, it’s not even a good way. (For those that like trading and doping out markets, it’s awesome — that turns out to be a tiny fraction of the player base.)

That said, you can save a lot of money by using the TP to full effect:

  • Never buy or sell things instantly; always put in a custom offer — saves/earns you 5-50% easily. (INB4: sure there are exceptions.)
  • If you intend to buy stuff, make a list and use one of the TP websites to price your offers (the wiki has links to these websites from the page for each item in the game, using /wiki [item]). Again, you can save/earn 5-50% with little trouble.
  • Look for alternate versions of an item that you want, e.g. you might be able to find a zerker sword with the sigil you want for less than the cost of crafting the sword and buying the sigil.

Bail on the personal story?

LFG is a good option. The other thing I’ve found for that particular mission (and a few others):

  • Always read the current challenge. Often, there’s an easier way to get to the next step than I thought, i.e. sometimes I was fighting when I didn’t have to.
  • Be prepared to swap builds when out of combat — the begin of a story might require killing a lot of little things quickly; the latter part might require staying alive long enough to win a war of attrition. The begin might not need any condition removal; the end might need a ton.
  • Bring consumables. Most of the consumables that are nerfed elsewhere can be used in the stories: foods and utility buffs are always good (in this case: superior undead potions, condition reduction foods) plus fire elemental powder, ogre pet whistle, etc

Good luck!

HoT Guilds no longer use Laurels?

Up till now I had used my laurels to purchase bank space for my guild. I no longer see the merchant I purchased upgrades from, and the one inside the new guild hall area wants influence/favor and gold. Is there no longer the option to use laurels to purchase upgrades?

There is no longer such an option. (And it never was the most efficient.)

Old method: you could accrue guild currency by spending account currency (laurels) or tradeable currency (coin), passively (via attendance and doing events/dungeons/etc), and actively (completing guild missions).

New system: you can only gain guild currency through active measures (completing missions). The other two methods have been removed. (On the other hand, it’s a lot easier to complete certain types of missions and no longer requires spending guild currency to set them up.)

TD Meta - is anyone still trying?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Illconceived Was Na.9781

This reminds me of all the complaints when Little Scarlet was the event of the week (i.e. the Marionette Fights in Lornar’s Pass). Each lane had some unique mechanic and it required 5-10 people per lane to understand the defense and at least 3-4 to understand how to destroy the particular boss (which could vary). That had to be coordinated across five lanes.

For a while, people struggled with it and a number of players claimed (loudly and repeatedly) that it couldn’t be done by PUG maps. This was proved incorrect over a short period of time. The secret was: communicate, communicate, communicate. The maps that succeeded has a leader (not usually a commander) who provided instructions and suggested builds before the fight began and offered reminders during.

This also has worked in Tequatl, Breach, and Vinewrath and it will work again in all the new metas. The problem is: these are all new, not everyone has been to every map and so we’ll see lots and lots of new players. This makes it more challenging on everyone.

I’ve been away a bit and so I’m just starting to have time to see what these meta events are and so far, none of the maps I’ve been to have had any sort of organization, whether I entered accidentally or via taxi. There have been Doritos galore (with or without apple flavor), but I’ve yet to see anyone offer any of the details that would help me to help them complete the event.

tl;dr the secret to completing Meta Events with PUGs is to communicate succinctly before the meta starts to have trouble. This isn’t happening yet; it will.

I agree with Wanze: the OP has missed the entire point of the legendary crafting journey. Those who are in a rush are always going to spend more money (and also run into more bugs) than those who are willing to take their time. The expansion has been out for less than a month — I’m surprised anyone thinks it would be cheaper to rush the process, along with everyone else, especially when there are so many uses for all the component materials.

That said, I would like to see some DvD (developer vs developer) challenges that are just for fun.

  • John Smith vs any dev: who can create Sunrise for the least amount of coin (time limit: one year).
  • Ree Soesbee vs Bobby Stein: the writer’s challenge, i.e. who can finish Troll’s Revenge JP the fastest.
  • Devon Carver vs Devon Carter: ANet dev tries to beat a fictional character through the “Raven” path of the Norn personal story.
  • Andrew Gray vs Gaile Gray: 50 shades of gray face off, i.e. given the same armor set and a theme, who can dye it to the best effect using only colors in the grey spectrum.
  • Chris Cleary vs Gaile Gray: the current Support Liaison vs the former. The challenge is to get through a currently buggy part of the personal or living story using only known workarounds. (OK, this one is a bit more salty than the other challenges — I wouldn’t suggest it except that both Gaile & Chris seem like clever and capable gamers and I think they would have fun.)

Costs are a lot higher now due to the sudden increase in demand on the relevant materials and some additional new costs (affecting some prefixes more than others). Personally, I’m not in a rush to create ascended gear yet. I’m waiting to see what the Raid patch brings (including a potential re-valuation of recipes). List of "Mats" that need storage spot

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I’m sure there are more, but here are some crafting materials that need a spot in the “material storage” section of the bank.

-amalgamated gemstones

-essence of luck (100)

-doubloons

-unidentified dyes

Feel free to add to the list peeps.

I support the idea, but disagree with your list. Things should only be stored in “materials” if

  • The primary use is as a crafting ingredient. (Example: foxfire cluster, recently moved.)
  • If it has secondary use in crafting, it must be hoarded for some time before it can be used. (Example: four types of doubloons; still must be hoarded in bank/inventory.)
  • If its primary use is as a vendor currency, it should be moved to the wallet instead. (Examples: geodes and bandit crests, recently moved to the wallet).

In contrast, if it has a primary value outside of crafting and isn’t used often in crafting or at vendors, then it should not go into the material vault. Examples include unID dyes (awkward if you accidentally “deposit all”) and essences of luck (any size).

Similarly, things used as “keys” should probably go into an account-bound “key ring” — there’s no reason folks with multiple characters should remember who has the silverwastes keys, who has the dry top ones, etc.

Finally, there are a number of intermediate items in the crafting process that don’t really have a good solution. This includes amalgamated gemstones, embellished jewels, dowels of all sorts, and base cooking substrates (such as baker’s dry or wet ingredients, salt & pepper, roux, …). I consider an item to be an “intermediate” if (a) it has no utility on its own, i.e. is used to craft other things, (b) it is required for lots of recipes, (.c) it’s likely that you’d want to stock up on these while leveling a craft or outfitting etc, and (d) one tends to produce more of these than needed right now (but one would like to keep them handy for the next time).

On the one hand, they aren’t strictly “materials” — they have been crafted from other items. On the other, aside from that, they function a lot like materials do. My suggestion: create a new tab in the account vault for these sorts of things and charge gems — it stacks as high as the materials storage; we would only pay once to unlock it. (This is to cover the cost of adding the mechanic.)

Point to healing in public events?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Healing isn’t “useless” in this game, it just has a very niche value:

  • Vinewrath and other escort events: healing is an excellent way of keeping the carriers alive, if the local zerg isn’t able to dish out enough damage.
  • Helping friends in dungeons, fractals, etc. There are several healing builds (e.g. “healineer”) that can keep just about anyone alive, even through stacks of agony. If you know people that don’t want to leech and are still struggling, this is a great way of making them feel like a star. (Which turns out to help them get better …eventually.)
  • Certain personal story/living story achievements are easier with one person working on heals. (This is similar to the point above; I separate them because many people have trouble with one but not the other.)
  • WvW requires healing in a number of situations, mostly for GvG or Zerg v Zerg.

Personally, I’ve always hated the healing role — even in single player games, my NPC teams are aggressively damage-oriented and in multi-player games, healers tend to be ignored (if they do their jobs) or yelled at (if anything goes wrong, whether or not they are effective). Still, I see why other people like the role.

Unfortunately, GW2 bases rewards on contribution to damage, not to keeping NPCs alive. If you want full credit, be sure to include a lot of damage in your rotation, too.

Flame Tample Tombs still bugged..!?

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Flame Tample Tombs, “hidden” area Diessa Plateau is still being bugged, well at least that room where you have to put the stone head in mortar so it can shoot the roof and it comes down. Well, that is simply not possible, because there is no action button appearing when you come near mortar with stone head in your hands. This is an issue that is happening for at least 1+months, and it is a problem because you need to be able to enter the water under that room so you can get Water of Rhand, an item required to craft Mawdrey back piece, so basically no bugfix=no Mawdrey… Please A-net, fix this bug so new players can experience going trough that mini-dungeon without bugs, and for us veterans so we can craft Mawdrey…

It’s bugged, ANet is aware of this, and there are several viable work-arounds. I realize that doesn’t make this any less frustrating — I only mention it so that you (and others) are aware of the current status.

The work-arounds are:

  • Get a port to Rhendak’s Tomb — these happen 24/7 (more frequently during prime time) and then work your way backwards. You can open all the gates from the “wrong” side and proceed through to the start.
  • Walk past the ‘mortar’ to the ‘floor’ above the water. Log out that character and log back in. When you return, you’ll be in the water.

(There’s a third work-around that I keep forgetting — with luck someone else will mention it.)

tl;dr I’m not holding my breath about this getting fixed soon. In the meantime, I use the work-arounds.

Claiming your guild hall for small guild

Illconceived Was Na.9781

What is the absolute minimum you can complete the claiming your guild hall event? We have a very small friends guild and was hoping we could do it with 4 people. Is that possible?? We were thinking of doing the lost precipice.

Thanks in advance!

It depends entirely on how aggressive the four of you are in combat. If you can dish out enough damage in the time provided, 4 is enough. It also helps if you’re familiar with the events — I highly recommend that the four of you help a larger guild take the same hall or at least be prepared to restart after learning the ropes.

I helped claim a hall with a group of 8 mostly-inexperienced folks, two of whom were suffering from lag/RL. We had trouble for the first event and a little on the second, and after that, it went really smoothly. I’d guess that four of us could have managed it if we had to.

Finally, there’s no need to limit yourself to a party of four. Divide into two teams and ask for help from /map or /LFG. There are a lot of people who want to see how it’s done (and missed their guild’s claiming event) plus others who just like to help out, and even folks who themselves need assistance to claim their keep and would love the opportunity to make a trade.

Good luck

Can't attune 2nd infused ring

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

You probably have an infused ring from pre-fractured.

It’s still a bug of sorts, since the average mortal can’t tell which ring is pre-fractured and which is post.

To expand a little on the issue: infused rings original came with an inherent +5 agony resistance. Fractured introduced Agony Infusions and the Agony Infusion slot, allowing people to add an arbitrary AI to the AI slot — those original rings were converted to have a +5 AI in the slot, instead of an inherent.

For some reason, the Forge doesn’t recognize those rings as ‘infused’ (probably because they have a different in-game ID). It’s probably easy enough to fix, time consuming and annoying to test, so it might end up being low-priority.

It’s possible that customer service might be willing to replace any such rings with their more recent equivalents, i.e. might be worth opening a ticket to find out.

It’s a minor issue that most Roundabout Regulars ignore. Thus, while I’d like to see it fixed, I’d prefer that ANet focus their attention on other bugs that affect more people or have a bigger impact on gameplay.

I’ve never earned my gold primarily from any single thing, so the loss of one source or another (or the migration to a new one) doesn’t seem as dramatic to me as it does to the dungeon runners.

I think we need to look for ways to adapt to the new system before we claim that it’s actually harder to make gold now than it was. I think the only thing that is fair to say is that it’s harder to make gold from dungeons.

Chest of Loyalty for Legendary in HoT

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

If one’ s primary goal is Legendary crafting (Old or new – unsure yet), which chest of loyalty option is best?

Obviously the Ascended box is out the window, as are the 6 Tomes, since 6 spirit shards is paltry.

So it’s between Legendary mats, which seems like it’d be the obvious winner based on name, or 20 Laurels.

But it looks like Mystic Clovers might not be used in the HoT Legendaries? (At least, the Wiki didn’t seem to think so, or it didn’t include information on the new part that would use them). 20 Laurels can at least convert into more Obsidian shards for either Legendary batch.

What’s the word on this?

  • Laurels are my consistent recommendation since they are the only item on the list that cannot be obtained easily. Current value is ~13-14 gold. (20 laurels * .65g/laurel via heavy crafting bags)
  • The ascended chest is competitive in terms of value (min 8g, max 22g, i.e. better today if you get two items, worse if you get one). However, that is because ascended mats are at a premium due to HoT’s disruption of the markets, so I think it only applies if (a) you plan on using the mats soon and (b) time-gating has locked you out from creating your own quickly enough.
  • The legendary chest is a weak choice because it’s easy to roll for clovers, obsidian is available via multiple sources.
  • The experience chest is a poor choice, since there are so many other ways to level up, there are many other sources of spirit shards, and it cannot be used to progress masteries.

Creating personal guild bank after HoT?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Hi all, I bought gw2 for a while but hasn’t really got into it (stopped playing my ele when she was like on 3x lv….). Until now, HoT has released and there is so many talking and I am starting to get interested into playing and plan to purchase the HoT expansion once my ele got to 80.
And I just realized I just don’t have enough storage to do crafting. I searched on the internet that I can make a personal guild bank to get 50 slots with only 6 gold. So I created a guid right away and when I get to the guild initiative notary he said I need like 50g and ~1000 favor for the 50 slot stash….?! I believed I have missed out something..So is it that expensive now to create a personal guild bank? ><

Under the pre-HoT system, guilds “leveled” by spending influence (and sometimes Guild Merits) plus time to build upgrades. Influence could be bought with coin (just like real life!) Influence also accrued passively due to member attendance and through participation in in-game activities, e.g. events, dungeons, activities, etc.

And at that point, yes, it cost 6 gold to start a new guild and add 50 slots of community storage to it.

In the new era, guilds require favor and gold to progress. Unlike influence, favor can only be obtained actively, via participation in guild missions. Fortunately, your guild gains immediate access to missions (compared to being required to build access in the old system). Thus you can complete a few missions and work up to your guild bank — this is more work than before, but still doable.

Ignoring the background, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Create your guild (same 1g cost as before)
  2. In the “Mission” sub-tab of the guild panel, use the gear-icon to choose the types of random missions you’d like to see: WvW, PvE, PvP, or a mix.
  3. Look in the “easy missions” and choose one that looks doable solo or by enlisting the help of friends and/or whoever happens to be on the map at the time. Easy missions earn 300 favor

The new costs are:

  • 1,000 favor (slightly more than 4 easy missions)
  • 50 gold (i.e. 10x more than it used to cost)

tl;dr it’s still possible to build personal guild banks of arbitrary size; it is, however, more work

Guild boon disabled for non-HoT players

They also moved all the WvW buffs (like +5 supply) out of the core game and into HoT. It’s a pretty shady move.

The +5 supply is part of WvW Abilities; it’s available to anyone with 145 ability points, including non-HoT players. (You can get smaller +supply increases with as little kitten points.)

The other two WvW buffs are also available to non-HoT: power of the mists works the same as it did pre-launch. And guild buffs are more powerful than they were before; they apply generally, rather than only when you claim a structure.

In terms of the original post:

Today it’s now called ‘’ Guild Enhancement ’’ you get by upgrading your Guild Hall.
You need to talk to the Bartender in the tavern to get the guild boon.

Problem is … this is disabled for non-HoT players.

I can’t test this — are you saying that the bartender in the Guild Initiative Hall in LA won’t speak to guild members, unless they own HoT? That sounds like a bug to me, not an intended feature.

Trading Post failing to load

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I’m going through trying to troubleshoot this with support at the moment, but when I open up the trading post panel, I get one loading loop and disappears, giving me a blank panel. What’s bad enough is I don’t get an error message, and the rest of the game works fine. I doubt it’s my connection because I don’t have high ping, I have tried deleting the temporary cache files reddit mentioned of, restarting my computer several times, tried the 64-bit game, repaired the game, too many other stuff to go through.

I can’t be the only one going through this right? The only other thing I can think of doing is deleting and re-installing but I’m not even sure if that will work.

You could be among the few, the proud, the ones having trouble with just the TP. At least, I haven’t seen many posts on this.

All the ones I’ve seen recently have this in common: the person swapped to Windows 10 and there’s an issue with the way WinX handles the default browser, which interferes with the handoff from GW2 (the TP is basically a custom web browser).

The easiest way to test this theory out is to try to use the in-game /wiki command, e.g.

/wiki TP

If that also fails to load promptly, it’s how Windows handles the handoff to the web client.

WinX (and iirc, Win 7 & have two places where you have to adjust the settings: internet options (which is basically the same as IE’s options) and “default programs”. I believe GW2 and Windows fail to cooperate when these are set differently. Everyone with whom I’ve chatted about this issue has had no problem after changing their default to Firefox, Chrome, or Opera (although I’m sure lots of folks have no trouble with IE either).

Good luck and please let us know how you end up resolving it.

You probably have an original infused ring — remember those came with +5 AR included. Appears that Zommy is treating it as a permanently-filled Agony Infusion slot. (I suspect it’s a different item ID.) ANet is apparently aware of the issue (according to posts in similar threads). So you can wait it out or buy a new ring and start from scratch. Alternatively, you can contact Support to see if they have any work-arounds.

Why EIGHT PVP dailies and only FOUR PVE ones?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Anet, this imbalance is unfair to those of us who loathe and detest PVP and never do it, the choice of dailies PVEers have is terrible, make it 6-6 each!

PVE is made worse with one requiring a world dragon event, meaning standing around till it spawns.

As others have said, you have four choices to complete something that’s optional.

  • The PvP dailies can be done in the so-called daily rooms with a friend. It’s basically PvW (player vs wait wait wait — got it).
  • Two of the WvW dailies in the rotation are PvE: Big Spender (talk to an NPC and turn in badges, which everyone gets from AP chests) and land claimer (there is usually one avail next to your spawn, at off-peak hours)

I’d like to see more options or at least different ones. However, there’s currently a strong mix and a reasonably fair distribution across the game modes.

A good game strikes a balance among:

  • Exclusive items, due to contests (e.g. design-a-weapon), special events (e.g. karka invasion), etc
  • Easily-obtained items.
  • Items obtained through skill.
  • Low-drop-rate items that can be sold (benefiting those with more coin than time and those with more time than coin, plus those who get lucky).
  • Low-drop-rate items that cannot be sold.

The “ideal” balance varies from player to player, and even game community to game community. I don’t think any one of us can offer our own personal preference and state with certainty that it’s “best for the game.”

tl;dr everyone’s mileage (kilometrage?) varies; a good game offers some balance.

Are you sure the stuff you are trying to do requires discovery? Have you looked up to see whether the wiki says the recipe is discovered or bought (or both)?

Are you sure you have reached the relevant discipline rank? Have you hidden any of the learned recipes via the search options (you can uncheck by rank/tier or by item rarity).

Beryl Crystal (a t5 gemstone) shows:

  • Beryl Orb transmog, an automatically unlocked recipe
  • three r300 trinket recipes, each of which uses mithril (and are discoverable)
  • one brilliant jewel recipe — this uses mithril. Discovered
  • one rank 375 embellished brilliant jewel recipe — this uses one ecto, mithril, and is discovered.
  • The brilliant jewel is used for three r350 trinkets made with mithril. I believe those are discoverable
  • The embellished brilliant version is used for three r375 trinkets, also with mithril. IIRC, also discoverable.

tl;dr I think you probably need to create some embellished or brilliant jewels and then discover the recipes using those items.

Guild hall costs are insane for small guilds

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I have seen a lot of posts about the costs being too high, but I haven’t see tons of good alternatives proposed.

  • If they are too easy to upgrade, people take them for granted and steam roll through the process, and get bored.
  • If the costs scale to guild size, some guilds will abuse that (most easily by creating a sister guild of smaller size, to build it up until it’s big enough, then move everyone over).

I don’t actually think the current costs are too high. I like the fact that it takes time for even a large guild to make progress. What I think would be useful to everyone (small & large guilds) is to offer the option of, let’s say, 3-4 functional upgrades that are cheap.

For example, each guild could choose 4 upgrades of a list of 20 that would be cheap to start with, while the other 16 would remain at their current prices. A personal guild bank might choose to add the guild banker, regular bank, regular merchant, and a scribe. While a large guild might add the mine sooner.

This way, everyone gets something they can use (at their choice), while the overall process remains something to aspire towards, rather than something anyone can buy off the rack.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Hey peeps,

Why so much negativity in the forums ?,

It’s typical of any forum, whether for a game or a newspaper or a blog. On a scale of 1-5, with haters being ‘1’ and lovers being ‘5’:

  • 2-4 aren’t passionate enough to post at all.
  • 5s are having too much fun to take time to post much and then it would be typically to offer help/report a bug, not to start a new thread praising this or that.
  • This leaves 1s. They don’t want to play (they hate it), so they have plenty of time to post about all the things they don’t like.

tl;dr it’s common to see lots of salty posts; it’s unusual to see tons of positive ones.

Personal Guild Vault

Illconceived Was Na.9781

A handful of bounties are soloable, but fortunately, you never need to solo them, since they take place in the open world. Just announce you are about to go after the target and people will join, since there are nice rewards for completing events (even if you aren’t in the guild).

I think people have confused the nature of the changes:

  • Prior to HoT, it was trivial for anyone to add influence by spending coin, passively by completing any event|instance, or even more passively just by logging in on multiple characters. And of course, official guild activities.
  • Post HoT, you can only gain favor actively; there are no more passive sources.

This definitely makes things harder on smaller guilds; it doesn’t mean it’s impossible or even burdensome.

tl;dr new personal guild vaults are still possible; they just aren’t trivial to obtain any longer.

There’s an issue with paid transfers though; There’s no way to join the most popular servers.

That’s a temporary issue that will eventually vanish. It came about because ANet changed the definition of ‘full’ to be more stable and predictable. Only, they forgot that they would end up with tons of “full” servers and no easy way to reduce that to allow new players to join or for veterans to move.

Already, Tarnished Coast (one of the NA servers that was full when this happened) is no longer full. (That’s partly because people moved off TC to build up another server for WvW.) It will happen for JQ, just very slowly.

I do wish ANet had shown more sympathy and foresight when they changed the definition, so that people could play with their new friends without leaving their old ones. However, this will resolve itself…eventually.

What's the best way to get T6 mats?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There is no “best” way — it really depends on how you like to play. Personally, I always recommend doing whatever you like and then purchasing the mats from the TP (using custom buy orders). That’s mostly because I value my time and how much fun I’m having during that time over saving a few silver.

Other popular choices include:

  • converting laurels via Heavy Crafting Bags
  • farming champ bags (that drop them)
  • Farming specific mats using specific farms, such as karka (southsun, for shells), skelk (southsun, for blood and poison), orr (for bones, poison), mad king lab (for bones, poison).
  • Farming the most valuable (or least boring) of those paths, selling off what you don’t need to fund what you want.

It used to be free. Then WvW people used the free transfer to go to other servers to grief the opposing sides. In response ANet started charging and putting in a 7 day period between transfers,

It was free only because guesting and “join your friend” were broken — the only way to play with other members of your party (in open world PvE) was to transfer, i.e. it was a workaround, not the original plan.

For the OP, there are several reasons why they charge:

  • It’s not free to ANet. Each individual move is low-cost, to be sure; building the capacity to make it easy to move is not.
  • They want worlds to be cohesive teams. With the numbers of people playing, that’s nearly impossible to achieve if folks are allowed to move at will.
  • As others have mentioned, free transfers enable griefing, as World A’s loyalists can transfer to B to use counter-tactics, without much risk or cost to themselves.

In short, ANet wants to discourage people from bouncing around.

That said, I think they do need to do something to promote folks migrating from a full server to a less full one — I know some people that don’t really care which world they do WvW on (a lot of roamers) — they’d happily move to give their slot to someone else, if only they didn’t have to pay to do so.

Gaining WvW Experience.

Except you don’t need to get them — they substitute for a random hero point. You won’t end up with more HP because you do both PvE and WvW; you’ll just have a different method of acquisition.
