What am I to do with unuseable birthday dyes

Illconceived Was Na.9781

What you should do is remember how much more time you got to enjoy using those dyes than most of the community.

I invested heavily into Gem Store Exclusive colors until birthday #3 and, like you, ended up without being able to use any of the kits (in any sort of way that held meaning for me). Since then, I’ve stopped trying to acquire all the colors, spending now on either the most economical or the most coveted. Despite that, I’ll shortly end up with duplicate Jubilant kits; in about a year, I’ll have too many Exuberants, too.

If you’re desperate to save the space or get some value out of them, choose any rare Yellow or Red dye and salvage — those have the highest values of pigment at the moment.

Actually, it would be a 13 year plan. First you have to get to your 5th birthday to get the first set of 2, then 2 per year for the next 7 years.

Apart from that, most people dont even show their backpacks, and if they do they dont switch the skins out as often. Weapons however.. you change those out depending on which build youre playing.

So again, for those of us who like matching sets…. its a letdown.

It’s good that you can only see this from one point of view. The world is a complex place and keeping things simple is very comforting.

Other points of view include:

  • If there’s another way to obtain it, it’s a grind for some people instead of a nice freebie.
  • If there’s another way to obtain it, it’s no longer special as a gift.
  • Humans tender to undervalue things that are free. We collect “free skins” and then dismiss them as boring. Making us choose gives us an opportunity to appreciate them.

Or in other words, isn’t it good to have some variety in the game with how skins are obtained? Some easily, some with great effort & expense, and everything in between.

Nothing in my posts indicates that i do not see other people’s points of view, yet you assume that i only want to see things my way. Which is amusing since personally i would not even use the weaponset on any of my toons (too shiny for my taste).

I am merely voicing MY opinion. It is not my job to voice the opinion of others; let them do that themselves.

And indeed, it is nice that there is variety in the ways skins are obtained, as long as they are obtainable (in a decent timeframe).

I dont raid, but you wont ever hear me complain about legendary armor because if i wanted it, i would raid for it. Same goes for fractal skins: I love that greatsword you can get when you complete fractal #100 (i think), so if i really want that, ill work for it. You may hear me nag every once in a while about the krytan harpoon that you could get from the old pvp chests, which is now unobtainable.

See the difference there?

I don’t expect you to voice the concerns of others. I find it interesting that you did. (“Most people don’t…”) If you had left it at, “I would prefer to unlock all the weapons this year,” I wouldn’t have responded at all.

Right, you’re asking for it to be free of WvW. You still haven’t addressed why you think ANet keeps changing the requirements so that WvW is required.

ANet’s intent isn’t wholly relevant. A lot has changed within GW2 (including the availability of a lot of PvE-only items that you couldn’t get just by playing WvW) in order to better cater to the customer. Intentions, demands and priorities shift and change.

This is just a reasonable request by a customer, ANet can take it or leave it. I wanted to add to an existing sentiment (this has been complained about before), which is the kind of thing ANet try to be aware of.

I was open to the possibility that there might be something new to this idea, other than what we’ve seen in the past. I wonder why you aren’t open to the possibility that there’s a good reason why the Gift of Battle is now a strictly WvW requirement.

ANet’s intent is always relevant. It doesn’t make your root complaint irrelevant, it just provides context for the state of the game. If their decision was arbitrary (as it sometimes is, six of one, half a dozen of the other), then sure, let’s get them to rethink. But if they keep doubling down on the same idea… then we should try to address the reasoning, otherwise they’ll keep making the same decision for the same reason.

In this case, they have changed the require for GoB at least twice. At first, it was just 500 Badges of Honor (and some silver). In 2014, they added a rank requirement (r14). More recently, they turned it into a reward track, which requires lots of time (via Daily Big Spender, i.e. just Badges of Honor) or actual WvW participation (5-12 hours, depending).

Why is that? Did some dev wake up on the wrong side of the bed and decide, “hey, let’s make things harder for PvE-only fans” ? Or perhaps they thought that active WvW should be a requirement for obtaining the highest tier of weaponry shininess in the game? (If so, I wonder why active PvP wasn’t also added to the mix.)

I’m really not trying to dismiss the request out of hand — I’d be happier if I could spend my reward track progress on something other than GoB. But I find it hard to accept the idea that ANet’s intent should be ignore when suggesting a change.

Or put another way, if we want ANet to change something, surely it’s more effective for us to understand why they set it up this way in the first place, so we can try to address their concerns for the the health & success of the game.

Generally speaking, as any game evolves, older content becomes easier, more so for veterans. Some people love that …and some get bored by it.

The problem with doing anything about it is… however much time that takes could be devoted to working on new content and everyone loves new stuff.

There’s a ton of stuff in the game that I wish ANet would reevaluate and update, but… there’s also a ton of stuff I want them to add. If left up to me, I’d prefer they focus on the new rather than worry too much about the old — it still works, even if it’s clunky sometimes for some of us.

[Suggestion] GW1 for Gems? & price confusion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

The game is always going to be buy-to-play, because there are no subscription fees. As long as that’s true, there’s no chance they’ll sell it for just gems (which can be obtained via in-game gold).

Many of us wonder why a 10-year-old game is still selling for the same retail prices it did when GW2 launched. It doesn’t seem crazy to expect to spend less these days.

The reason for the confusion is that there remain a lot of boxed copies of the game in versions sold when the various bundle options were ‘new’ and made sense. These days, one would typically buy Platinum (‘Proph+EotN’) and ‘Trilogy’ (Proph + Factions + NF), to collect the full set.

In your case, there aren’t any great options, since I don’t remember a package of “Factions + EotN”, which would be ideal for you.

If your budget is limited, I’d look for deals on Amazon, BestBuy, Steam, or similar legit sites. If you want to stick to the official site, I’d buy just Platinum to get EotN for $20. That gets you access to the Hall of Monuments (allowing you to link accounts and eventually earn AP/skins in GW2 via GW1 accomplishments). If you run out of stuff to do for fun, then also buy Trilogy to get Nightfall.

The evasive FOTM Ascended chests

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

The thing to note is that certain chests (namely, Chest/Legging/Helm boxes) only drop from the higher tier Fractals. You won’t get Chest boxes from, say, T2 or T3 fractals, I believe. This might explain why some types of boxes seem more difficult to come across than others.

I haven’t seen evidence that supports this. Most of the >500 T4 run data groups and summarize all armor pieces together.

The drop rates are low enough that it’s hard to spot patterns in our limited data. In one set of [KING] data, of 545 T4 fractal instances, 16 armor boxes dropped from master chests and 15 from expert. If the odds are even, then we’d see ~2.5 parts per tier. It’s not hard to imagine a slightly unlucky streak in which you get no torso armors and 4+ of each of the others. It could take another 1000 fractals or more before things evened up.

As an example, this vid shows someone opening chests from 250 T4 runs. They got only 4 armor drops, so it’s hardly a surprise that there aren’t any torso pieces. (Warning: it’s a frustrating video for gathering any data. The mouse-over for the three lower tiers only comes at ~6 minute mark and doesn’t distinguish which tier dropped what.)

tl;dr drop rates are too low to establish clear patterns of distribution, without collating results from 1000s of runs.

I wasn’t a “claim”; it was a paraphrase of a developer comment.
And again, regardless of whether the statement was accurate, it cannot help anyone — folks with a duplicate still need to contact support and there’s no guarantee that support can assist.

Context (player question)

too bad that you can get duplicates of the minis you auto-unlock from the chest; I bought 10 chests and got like 3 duplicate minis

Response: ANet Myranda

The chests physically can not drop an account bound mini you already own. Are you sure it didn’t unlock when you got it dropped and mistaking it as a duplicate? It could maybe happen if you’re getting two of the same mini in one chest open. But, that would be incredibly rare

What happens if i dont want to raid?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Illconceived Was Na.9781

You don’t have to raid; the only thing you miss out on is some spirit shards which you also gain from all sorts of other sources.

The reason this is a thing is that originally, XP didn’t give us anything at all after maxing masteries. About a year after that happened (well before HoT), ANet offered us the least possible reward: spirit shards. But because they had implemented masteries into only two trees (HoT and Core), “maxing” meant including raids. It was just the least-effort solution to appease the criticism.

My hope is that they’ll separate raid masteries into its own tree or provide some other work-around.

In the meantime, you’re not missing much. Or if you truly think it’s that important, buy a raid (or leech off friend who raid); you only need to complete one encounter to unlock the branch.

I doubt there are that many players who routinely delete and remake their characters.

You’d be surprised.

I don’t have a problem with the status quo (and it’s why I get new slots rather than re-roll).

I wonder if this implementation is because it’s the easiest, safest way for ANet to trigger the achievement. The game might not have any good way to measure its age outside of measuring the age of the oldest character. That’s a programming choice that might have made sense in 2012, before there was any reason to distinguish the two.

Or in other words, it might simply be a lot harder to change this than it sounds.

Keep in mind, Lionwait, that ANet isn’t likely to act quickly or indeed, in any way that’s visible to you. Sometimes, they ban hackers in waves, so that it’s difficult for them to work out how they got caught. Or so they can collect data. Sometimes, they’ll let individuals off without a warning, because they (ANet) don’t see an immediate threat to the health of the game. And, sometimes ANet won’t even agree that “cheating” was involved.

In other words, /report and then let it go. Have faith that ANet will handle it as best as they see fit.

Do we really have to call it Minstrel gear?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I really dislike the idea of giving my elementalist a full set of Minstrel’s gear or stats implying that my elementalist is a Minstrel, one of the blackface entertainers that pretends to be unintelligent for laughs.

It implies no such thing, since there’s a long, long history of the use of Bard|Minstrel|etc as an RPG trope; that started well before the age of computers.

I am quite aware of the term’s medieval roots designating a musician, but we don’t live in medieval times. That word means something else to many people today.

This is a more interesting argument. Lots of words mean something to different people. And that meaning can vary a lot depending on the audience. Would, for example, GW2 players in Singapore be even aware of the usage from the earlier century? And in contrast, Richard Claxton Gregory might have grand- or great-grandchildren who are all too aware of those usages.

At what point should a manufacturer draw the line at using such words? How many people must ‘see’ an issue before it’s bad business? How many fewer before there’s a strong moral argument to be made? Should we defer to those most affected by the wording? Or the majority who don’t see the issue at all?

I’m not in favor of worrying about this use of the word, since the GW2 connotation so clearly relates to its medieval origins. But let’s be careful not to assume that there aren’t reasonable people out there, perhaps not RPG or MMO fans, who will first see the 19th century meaning, without recognizing the trope.

When did addons become permissible?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Overlays have always been permissible. This includes things like TACO and GW2 Timer’s overlay and Overwolf. They don’t directly interact with the game, but read from the game’s “echolocation” API (that’s what enables VoIP apps like Mumble to identify your location).

Recently, partly due to demand… partly due to the fact that so many people were using them anyhow… and partly due because it was easier than forbidding them, ANet has allowed the use of DPS meters under some strict guidelines. The short version is: DPS meters are restricted to using information otherwise available on via your UI or the API. So that covers your own DPS, buffs, and imputing those things for other players in your party/squad (since they can be ‘seen’ in the UI).

There’s never going to be an official list of what’s okay because ANet can’t spend the time vetting each version of each app. (Hard enough to do that for their own app.)

As it turns out, the (arguably) most popular of DPS meters shut down because its developer added features that violated the protocol above (I’m oversimplifying the story — ANet and the app’s dev roughly agree on that part, though). That is, we’ve seen at least one “acceptable” app become “unacceptable” over time.

There’s absolutely no need to run DPS meters for 90% of the game’s content. There are other, simpler ways to tell if you (or party members) are doing a “good enough” job. The notable exceptions are raids (and not all raiders need meters), benchmarking & theorycrafting builds (I hope everyone can see how this is useful), and speedclearing.

tl;dr

  • Overlays always been ok.
  • DPS meters recently okayed; restricted to using the game’s API and other “visible” data.
  • There’s no officially approved list and never will be.
  • Most people don’t need DPS meters most of the time. Unless you raid with certain types of players, you won’t need them … ever.

[Suggestion] Gift of Battle acquisition

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

The only way to get a Gift of Battle (required for Legendary crafting) is via a WvW reward track.

Please change this, preferably by adding an additional method that can be done by playing exclusively PvE content; be that fractals, open world, dailies, achievements, crafting, dungeons, world bosses – whatever works.

Why would this be a good thing for the game? Why do you think ANet changed the requirements for the GoB more than once, each time making it less convenient for those who are strictly PvE?

Its the exact opposite. Badges are obtained fasted by invader loot (ie Killing other players), from rank chests (which is also fastest by killing invaders), and killing Tower Lords and Camp Supervisors (yielding a few per capture). At a cost of 500 badges, doing a couple hundred tower/camp captures is a painful prospect if you’re trying to avoid the zerg and/or roamers (who are purposely targeting other solo or small groups).

With the addition of Edge of the Mists, camp and tower captures became easier, but still required opposing teams to recapture it before you could recap yourself. A lot of areas are also blocked off by siege walls. This became friendly for K-trains, but still look a LOT of time gather the badges without a head on fight.

But with the switch to Reward track, it changed the process to a simple time sink of 7-10 hours; which you could easily bang out on a weekend. And with the squad system, you can volunteer to scout/camp assets owned by your team and get participation without even having to fight NPCs.

So tell me again how its “less convenient” then the old way? Or is interacting with a Commander suddenly become incredibly difficult?

You’re kidding, right? Originally, it simply cost badges of honor, which people get from Achievement Chests. No WvW was required at all. The current system requires a minimum WvW rank and completion of a reward track.

I’m not arguing that it’s difficult. And if you read my post, I’m not supporting a return to the old method. I’m simply asking why the OP thinks this is better for the game and why they think ANet changed the requirements in the first place.

Maybe it’s easier for you today because you didn’t have a lot of Badges. But clearly from all of the threads on this particular topic, it’s less convenient for lots of other people.

Markets are fickle. It’s always a risk to be among the first buyers (prices might drop quickly) or to wait to see (prices might rise quickly). It’s a risk to speculate. It’s a risk to flip. It is, in short, risky. And that’s how it should be.

Accordingly, all the transparency we need (about skin re-introduction) is already present: ANet reserves the right to make skins/dyes/etc available whenever they like, for whatever reasons they choose. It might be in response to low supply or it might simply be that they want to keep giving the newest players the same opportunities that veterans has before they were veterans.

Yes there’s a separate issue about the distribution of the drops. That’s got nothing to do with the OP’s point, so it’s worth its own thread.

Crafting the newer Legendaries

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There seems to be a major disconnect here.

Some of the frustration is reasonable: legendaries are designed to be major time & material sinks and gen 2 legends were intended to be comparable to gen1 built through collections.

Some of the frustration is perception: those who have finished legendaries have learned from mistakes and can be a lot more efficient about making progress; to them, it’s just not as hard as critics suggest.

And alas, some of the frustration comes from unrealistic expectations. In effect a few people are saying, “sure sure, legendaries are supposed to take a while; I just don’t think they should take so long for me.” While people can feel however they feel, it’s unreasonable to think that the level of effort is going to fit into everyone’s gaming schedule — regardless of the minimum requires, some people aren’t going to feel they have the time. And, unfortunately, ‘you’ might be one of those people.

The short story is: it’s a game; it’s supposed to be fun. If you’re doing something in the game that’s giving you hives, try dropping that and do something else.

PS there are a large number of items with legendary-lite effects in game. Some people like some of these more than their legendary counterparts. Notably: Infinite Light versus Bolt & The Anomaly versus The Minstrel.

I’m confused as to how “small content pack” differs from LS3/LS4. Yes, I get that there are specific details that differ, but doesn’t it serve the same niche? Something that people can do between the big content changes? And doesn’t ANet charge for them already? (They gift them to those playing during the 2-3 month release window, but everyone else has to pay 200 gems.)

[Suggestion] Gift of Battle acquisition

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Although slow, one can obtain the Gift of Battle without ever setting foot in WvW. Of course, it does require access to a Guild Hall with the appropriate upgrade.

Thus, ArenaNet has already provided an alternate means of obtaining the Gift of Battle.

Can you elaborate?

If you complete 80 WvW (basic) dailies, you get enough WvW potions to finish a reward track.

To completely avoid wvw:
For “Big Spender,” go to your guild hall and purchase one Badge of Tribute. This occurs 3-4x/month, so figure it would take at least 20 months to get 80 potions. (It almost certainly takes less, but I’ve not seen a reliable rotation for dailies that makes it easy to count; this is worst case.)

If you want to do “PvE in WvW”, there are the following dailies:

  • Daily Monument: you ‘capture’ a ruin in the borderlands. No fighting
  • Daily Veteran Slayer: 3 NPCs in each BL count for this.
  • Daily Land Claimer: fight a sentry NPC, claim their location
  • Daily caravan: kill an enemy dolyak; there are plenty leaving from enemy-owned camps near your spawn.

There are easily 10 of these per week, so if you do them all, worst case ~2 months. Each involves a minor risk of getting attacked by enemy players, with that risk varying depending on location, time of day, and your world/opponents.

No google sources on it

There were runes you could get in the beta indicating there will be bag with 25 slots.
I doubt that we will be able to get them for 1k relics because that would be too cheap according to the prizes we’ve seen in the beta. But there is hope that prices will be tuned down – the rune had a value of over 100g.

Legendary backpack, a consumable that turns the first default 20 bag into a 26 bag; random idea
(I’d be annoyed with 25 because then you cant have even rows)

You can have even rows with packs of any size if you “hide bags”.

Then everything becomes a big block where items haphazardly distribute themselves around
:p

Not for me. You must not be making use of different types of bags.

64 bit install directory?

Illconceived Was Na.9781

This is a windows problem, not a GW2 issue. If you happened to install to c:\programs or c:\programs (x86), then it’s going to be slightly harder, because those folders are restricted (for a variety of reasons).

Generally speaking, I install games to c:\games so I don’t have to worry about that.

Fortunately, for GW2, it’s trivial: copy the entire folder and paste it anywhere you alike (you don’t even have to “cut” if windows honks at you). The game will run from anywhere in windows.

Be sure to update any shortcuts to “point” to the preferred location. Or in e.g. Rebel’s case, perhaps have one shortcut for the non-system drive (D) and one for the original location (overkill, but some people like that).

[Suggestion] Inactive Name Cleanup

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There are two types of reasons people have trouble finding a name that isn’t already taken:

  • They hate inventing character names.
  • They have imposed a set of requirements that limits the choice of names.

In the first case, the OP’s solution won’t be of much help; they still will hate inventing names. In the second case, I don’t understand why ANet or especially other players need to indulge one player’s personal preference for names, especially since it results in the same status quo: so-called “cool names” get gobbled up quickly on a first-come, first-served basis.

This topic comes up every so often. ANet’s made the same comment multiple times:

  • There is no such thing as an “inactive account” — players might come back at any time. We’d hate for people to return only to find out that we took those from them.
  • Nor does it make sense to release names on banned accounts — we don’t want players to start a new account and avoid some of their punishment by having access to their old names.

That’s even without talking about the expense of identifying which accounts would count for a purge or the effort spent explaining to people why they lost their names or fixing mistakes.

Finally, why should ANet do this? The only reason any of us wants these names freed up is if we lack the creativity to create other names. Releasing more names isn’t going to make that job easier: it will still be first-come, first-served, so only a few people will benefit from this undertaking.

In short, this is too much work to cater to the minority of players who don’t want to spend a little more time figuring out a name.

What difference does it make whether you see anyone using them? That doesn’t make them less meaningful to those of us who do use them (and I use about 1/3 of them regularly).

Besides that, players have a way to get the HoM rewards — play GW1. Unlike LS1 in-game memorabilia, the HoM rewards were specifically promised as a reward (for those dedicating time to GW1). To make them available in any way, shape, or form in GW2 means breaking that. Does it really make sense for ANet to do that because a few people what the skins without playing GW1?

There’s always a reasonable debate about whether a game should have exclusive rewards and what sort of criteria should be used. But once the developers have given their word that a reward is strictly for doing X, I don’t think they should change their mind without an extraordinary reason.

tl;dr LS1 rewards weren’t promised to be exclusive to those present at the time; the HoM rewards were promised for those dedicating time to GW1.

shrug i use mine sometimes, i have all the items. Im just saying, i personally dont see a problem with it. You do and thats fine, i dont expect everyone to agree with me on that.

I’m not concerned with whether you have a problem with it. I’m pointing out that the reasoning used left out some key facts. The justification you used was it was okay because you didn’t see anyone using them and you glossed over the the purpose of the HoM (to reward GW1 veterans).

I don’t expect us to agree about our preferences; I do hope we can agree that offering LS1 rewards to GW2 newbies is a different thing than offering HoM to those who didn’t play GW1.

Aurora why no extra infusion slot?

That said, any Legendary Rings should have three infusion slots.

After you infuse and attune them, sure

Legendary Backpacks automatically have two infusion slots. Why should Legendary Rings require extra steps to reach their maximum?

Infusing a back costs a stack of ecto (except for stat-limited Mawdrey & spinal blades, using a trick). Infusing & attuning rings is cheap.

That said, I wouldn’t mind if legendary rings included the extra slots. Or, better yet (perhaps), have just one slot with the effects tripled (e.g. add a ghostly condi infusion and get AR+27, Condi+15).

Suggestion: Make Guild Sub-Divisions Possible

For example, a branched division in the guild for long-range players, and a different one for support, and a different one for melee. See what I’m saying? There can be so much more proper structuring, labeling, and re-labeling of things. It would make guilds less messy. Usually everyone in guilds just do their own thing, this would make guilds more legit and goal oriented.

I don’t understand the issue you hope to resolve by dividing a guild. What sort of structuring isn’t possible now using ranks or e.g. Discord? What things need labeling or re-labeling? How would this change the essential 5000+-year old fundamentals of organizing communities of humans?

It’s trivial to fill up 14 Bank Tabs.

That said, adding more storage rarely solved the root issue for most people. As others have suggested, the more likely issue is inventory management. Folks need to make time to learn how to deal with stuffy stuff stuff, because the older any game gets, the more stuff we get.

I’d certainly buy more slots if they become available. All the same, I doubt anyone who is burst at 14 slots is going to have more than a month or two of 60-free slots if the limit is increased to 16.

Apparently one of these comes in this week’s “Champion” package but the wiki doesn’t have an entry for it. Anyone know what dyes are available in it? And whether they are RNG or player’s choice?

I assume that every gem shop dye kit will always be RNG and that every birthday gift box will always be player choice.

The wiki usually doesn’t add data-mined features until they are somehow confirmed in other ways — that’s probably why there’s no info on the Exuberant kit.

Does it not make ANYBODY else that fought through the Scarlet’s War content angry that just any new kid with money can just get the same items that I busted my butt for?

No. Partly because there’s not a single reward available that required more than dedication — something that can be expressed with time (as you did) or gold (acquired from years of playing) or cash (putting one’s money where’s one’s mouth is).

I’m a long time support of exclusive rewards in gaming, from “you had to be there” to “it takes some skill to get this”. But nothing on the commemorative sprocket list falls into either category neatly. It didn’t take skill to acquire these items; it took luck and/or perseverance. They weren’t so much “you had to be there” items either, other than ANet was still experimenting with the idea of “of the moment” content & rewards, so stuff appeared and disappeared all the time.

Plus a lot of the stuff (with the tonics being the main exception) was available on the TP (or via TP purchases of other items) for trivial amounts.

tl;dr I don’t see anything worth my getting angry about.

is "waste of dev time" a real arguement?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

People should request whatever features they like in a game. As long as they don’t make claims that it’s easy or try to claim it’s what the majority wants. I frequently +1 the former and I just as frequently will post quotes/paraphrases from ANet or other relevant information about the latter.
—————————————————

I’ve never argued that something shouldn’t be requested because it would take too much dev time. I will continue to point out that ANet must prioritize among all the ideas we provide (both good & bad), and that includes considering whether something uses a lot of resources, as well as how many people would enjoy it.

As an example, people are going to keep asking for a replayable LS1: it was a memorable part of the game that a lot of people missed, there’s a ton of achievements, and for the unique rewards (less so from today forward, thanks to Memory Boxes). People will also ask for new races. I support that. I’m even on record saying that I would like those things.

I will, however, continue to step in when people claim “ANet should do this” or “this should be a priority” or “this wouldn’t be any harder than [fill in the feature]”.

The first set of statements are about personal preferences, about interests, about hopes for the game. The second set are statements about what’s practical, about what’s best for the community, about, well, priorities. People can have a preference, but it’s not okay to misinterpret facts in support of those preferences.

So for example, I can’t recall anyone actually saying, "ANet doesn’t have time to preserve ranger pet names. I paraphrased what ANet told us, which was that it was more complicated than we thought, it took more time than we thought, and it wasn’t likely to happen soon (which, keep in mind: it didn’t happen for a long, long time).

And while I trust ANet to know their business about the current state of the code, it surprised and disappointed me that they didn’t arrange the data to be flexible enough — even if we couldn’t have 40 pet names/character from day one, why did they set it up to make that more difficult to add later?

In short: I support people asking for whatever they want, regardless of effort involved. And, I also think it’s a good idea for us to point out when stuff is more difficult than people make it out to be.

Plenty of time.
First, AmGems can be bought — you can farm the gold whenever you like. Or you can make your own (for about 10-20% less).

Second, the primary HoT-specific requirements are:

  • Map completion of each HoT map (even most of Dragon’s Stand map completion can be done without a group).
  • The purchased gifts, and that’s just a matter of doing side events to generate lcoal currency.
  • 250 Crystalline Ore… that’s less than 3 Dragon’s Stand metas if you come prepared with 110+ machetes or closer to 5 if you’re inefficient like I am.

Everything else can be done via gold, including via PoF and selling off stuff from there to fund your project.
