Some nodes are TP, some are gem shop. It’s good to have a mix. While I covet having all of the nodes, I don’t think it’s necessarily good for the game to make them available at a fixed price; the variety is good too. (And especially it’s nice for those who get lucky with the BL keys.)

T6 Leather still massively inflated

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Clearly there’s an ongoing supply and demand issue with hardened leather.

I can’t agree. The supply is huge; I can buy all I need, whenever I want. People are just willing to pay extra to avoid farming their own.

It is more accurate (and an easier issue to address) to say that many people do not like the market value, because (a) it’s so much higher than we were used to and (b) it’s not comparable to cloth or metal (although the difference is far less extreme).

ANet can easily refute & ignore the claim that there’s a supply issue, that it’s “massively inflated”. They can’t as easily ignore a statement about the market cost sucking the pleasure of playing out of the game. The first is a factual statement (which isn’t technically true); the second is a statement of opinion by the customer.

All materials should be (roughly) the same in difficulty to acquire.

Why? That’s a design preference and imo makes for a less interesting game, both in terms of playing it and its global economy.

Why do you think they are okay with it? It’s easy to say they shouldn’t have lost them or that if it’s previewable, there must be code somewhere.

It’s an entirely different matter to make the business decision to keep putting resources into nailing things down with these weapons, rather than working on all the other skins people want to see. Are you willing to give up other potential skins in exchange for this?

Is this considered a macro?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Those are indeed macros, but of the acceptable sort. As long as one action on the controller leads to one action in the game, you’re fine. The problem arises when you assign multiple in-game steps to the same controller key or combo.

So ‘soft pull’ = weapon swap and ‘hard pull’ = weapon stow would be fine. But soft = weapon swap + cast utility + cast weapon skill… that would not.

The likelihood of someone getting punished for adding a macro that types out a chat phrase is nil. ANet’s concerned about people skipping the “playing” part of “gameplay”. If you don’t want the repetitive rotation of chronotank or hate stacking might, find a different prof or build.

But I can’t imagine ANet will care if you want to ask for a rez using a silly macro that types out:

/p Red Robin is DOWN! Repeat, Red Robin is DOWN!"

(well, assuming one doesn’t brag about it on the forums or reddit — they might be willing to let stuff go, but they sometimes will have to crack down if something is in their face and publicized)

DPS meter really?

It’s a reasonable point of view, but I wonder: how much more difficult would it be for you to add a few words? “T4 dailies, experienced only” tells me that it’s a group that cares how well people know the mechanics, whereas “T4 dailies” leaves it open to interpretation.

Then what is a “T4 training” group for?

What difference does it make? The purpose of choosing words is to communicate ideas to each other. Clearly, people misunderstand LFG/LFM and some of the time, it’s down to the absence of a few words.

So again, how much trouble is it for folks to add a few words to their LFG? It won’t prevent joiners who fail to read LFG and it won’t prevent people who haven’t mastered as much as they think, but will help some people to find or avoid a group.

Personally, I think finding out our “fifth” is a poor match for our group is less efficient than spending a few seconds typing a few more letters. Your mileage might vary.

Compare to opening on an L80, which is ~2.95s.

In other words, opening on anything between L25 and L60 is fine, within 10%. But opening on L80 represents a 40% loss of average value.

If I just put T4 dailies it’s assumed that I want to do the freaking dailies, not teach them. There is no need for “no newbies”, if I wanted to teach I’d put a “T4 daily training” instead.
When you want to train look for the word “training” in a listing, there were loads when the new Fractal was released because nobody had experience with it anyway.

It’s a reasonable point of view, but I wonder: how much more difficult would it be for you to add a few words? “T4 dailies, experienced only” tells me that it’s a group that cares how well people know the mechanics, whereas “T4 dailies” leaves it open to interpretation.

Picking a price is as much art as science and some of it depends on the market, on the quantities involved, and your willingness to risk. It also depends on what you mean by flipping. If you want a rapid turn around, you should list for something that is unlikely to be undercut — you trade off speed for profit.

If you don’t care so much about how long things take to sell, then don’t worry about undercutting as much. Everything eventually sells.

From what I have heard, the actual implementation of LWS1 was anything but fun.

You heard wrong.

GW2, for me, was best during its LS1 days. The fights were epic, there was a constant surge of new content, new stories, and very, very little waiting around.

The actual implementation suffered from any number of issues that tarnished it for some. And ANet tried something that no one else does: temporary, story-driven, content. I loved it, but… if you were gone for two weeks, you might miss a release without any way to go back. Also bad was that the game probably wasn’t ready for the sheer number of players logging on; it was more popular than anyone expected. And of course, with any content comes bugs and balancing issues and with only 2-4 weeks to play through everything, that sort of thing hurts more.

In short, it was wonderfully fun for a lot of people, frustrating at times for lots (including the same people who otherwise loved it), and why you see such mixed reviews about it.

Don’t complete the plots. Go off exploring. If you find you never get past L20-30, ask yourself, is there anything you really like doing in the game? Maybe there isn’t. Even great games aren’t good for everyone (and that’s without even agreeing whether GW2 is good, let alone great).

I go at my own pace — I took probably 10 months longer than most of my game buddies in maxing masteries because, well, I just wasn’t that interested. Even after finding out how much fun max gliding is, I wouldn’t have pushed myself any harder to max it.

Or put it this way: the only treadmills in this game are the ones you decide to step on. Some people like doing that and getting past certain phases; if that’s not you, don’t worry about it. Stick to the journey.

New Specializations: No Dual Wielding?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Nearly all weapon skills used in this game are, in effect some sort of magic. The weapon serves as a focal point for the powers (a “focus” in the traditional sense). So there’s no fundamental reason that we couldn’t see dual warhorns or axe/axe mesmers.

There are however balancing issues. It’s simpler to limit the number of permutations and ANet has generally followed trope-friendly conventions when doing so. (No main-hand warhorns or focus, no one-handed staffs, and so on.)

I’m all in favor of mixing things up, if there’s some fun gameplay associated with it. I don’t think dual-wielding is fun all by itself though; it needs the right set of skills, supporting traits, & animations, too.

Mercenaries look worse & worse to me. We get more tools to do more things and more ways to get others to help us out. Group-related objectives are becoming easier to accomplish.

Adding NPCs that accompany your character strikes me as the final step for an MMO before going into the home stretch of retiring it from active development. An MMO thrives on massive multiplay; it turns into a coop, single player game when the focus changes to using NPCs.

In the end, it really doesn’t matter if any of us think “Dawn Soap” is acceptable or not — it’s ANet’s decision. If the automated filter or one of the mods prevents you from a name, appeal via a support ticket — sometimes they make mistakes and they’ll correct them. Other times, they’ll be able to offer a substantive reason (e.g. maybe it’s the “wnso” that’s the issue, not the brand name of something people buy to clean their face).

Opening Elite Weapons

The issue isn’t that ANet wants to gate abilities, it’s that they want to (a) force us to make tradeoffs: these features (and deficits) or those ones and (b) they want the system to be straightforward for balancing across profs and across content. Restricting a single weapon to each elite accomplishes both goals.

Its really weird how english naming has hard restrictions, and in the other hand other language, like french, don’t have.

I’m a part of this kind of player who are really chocked to see so much rude names who haven’’t be blocked or moderate in game.

On the whole, most permanently blocked names come from someone reporting the name and staff at ANet adding it to the automated filter. If people don’t report, then names don’t get added (and players won’t be asked to change those names).

The policy has changed somewhat since the game launched, in that previously unacceptable names are now allowed (such as references to bodily functions that delight 10 year old boys the world round, and more than a few middle-aged men, too). Generally, objectionable names include references to sex, suicide (or RL world violence generally), and the hard-to-define “hate speech”.

The filter (and the mods) have a harder time with slang and its many variations. So if you think something might be missed, file a support ticket rather than using the in-game /report feature.

Start with the guide on the wiki. It covers everything you need to know about getting 30 points efficiently.
https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guide_to_earning_Hall_of_Monuments_rewards

Regarding your other questions:

  • Some things will be faster with 4 and some slower. Faster: doing stories and other things needed to unlock steps, e.g. acquiring heroes and pets. Slower: acquiring minis & such, since a single friend with an idle GW1 account probably has enough birthday rewards to get one person most of their minis.
  • Yes, you can trade with other players to expedite the process, especially: HoM tapestries, Hero armor skin tokens, miniatures, and materials used to craft/buy armor or weapons.
  • It’s nearly impossible to estimate the time, because it depends on all sorts of factors that vary with each person, their schedule, and play style. If I started a new account, I imagine I could get 30 points in a couple of months of 5-10 hrs/week. Some people will need more, some less.

The mini moa chick requires a LONG cross-campaign scavenger hunt; I don’t recommend it for only 2 points, unless you cannot find a green mini for trade or donation.

So about sigil swapping

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

When asked about sigil swapping on legendary weapons the devs mumbled something about economics and the sigil market, then moved on. Don’t get your hopes up.

What they said was that they were on their way to adding sigil swapping and encountered something that prevented them from implementing it. We speculated that the sole reason was economic, but we don’t really know.

I really think the gear system needs an overhaul and that the ability to swap upgrades would be part of it. I don’t like the idea of keeping multiple sets of gear for each toon or creating extra L80s to avoid that. And I’d love it if ANet would keep us informed about high profile requests, the way that some of their devs have done about their pet projects (Mac not-BETA client, material storage overhaul, and the fractal & raid teams… we learn about those regularly).

However, I also recognize that it’s not realistic to expect we can have that for all the things I think (or even a majority of the community thinks) are important. We’ll get sigil swapping… I’m just not holding my breath.

No diversity. A Real idea to fix gw2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

When will we ever get to go back to real Guild Wars and not this half game we have? We need to go back to dual classes!

I don’t feel that dual classes brought more diversity. It produces mathematically more combinations of skill, but GW1 had its own meta builds and meta comps, with perhaps even less variation. However, unlike GW1, it’s hard to have a completely useless build in GW2: you automatically have some damage, some sustain, and some support (whether it’s efficient or even optimal is a different story).

In some ways, this game fosters more creativity because you actually have to stop to think about things, rather than just swapping things around to see what works.

I definitely liked the hybrid builds I made in GW1, but I can’t agree that dual classes would make GW2 a better game.

Path of Fire US and Eu price

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Yes please point me to a way to buy with dollars without vpn and I will do it gladly.

Why does that have to be a qualification? It’s up to you to find a way (and there are others besides using VPN), if you’re convinced that you’re overpaying by spending €30 when the price near ANet HQ is US$30.

DigitalRiver invests in the infrastructure that makes it possible for us to buy games in various countries and for ANet to be able to sell them and collect the funds. That’s not ‘free’ or without its own headaches.

The larger point remains that there’s no such thing as a “fair” conversion price. There’s just the price. If it’s more than you’re willing to spend, then don’t pay.

There are only a few industries which charge customers differently depending on their willingness to pay, notably airlines & tour companies (you can sit next to someone who paid triple what you paid for a nearly-identical flying experience). With games, there’s just the one price.

The alternative would be that the Euro price would change by the minute, depending on conversion rates. DigitalRiver would include an explicit fee for the transaction, to cover their overhead, including owning enough dollars (that they can use to pay ANet) or paying their bankers to convert them. It might work out that some days you’d pay a smaller number, but it might also work out that you’d pay a bigger number some days, too.

And it would create all sorts of annoying issues, as two players buying the game within the same hour might pay differing amounts. The person who pre-ordered might end up paying less than the person who buys 3 months after launch. It would be hard to know when the game was discounted and by how much.

So again, if you think it’s cheaper to buy in dollars, go ahead and do that. I realize that easier said than done, but it’s also easier said than done to sell the game at different prices depending on the vagaries of the currency markets.

It’s simply simpler to charge one number in a limited number of markets.

Instead, I far prefer what ANet’s done here: try to make the classes fun for a variety of playstyles, so that most of us are bound to find one we like. Suggestion: Save Options per character

Illconceived Was Na.9781

With the introduction of the various new elite specs, “one profile per character” isn’t enough.

And tbh, in some games, I find it more of a chore to manage multiple profiles, unless I’m able to edit the profile outside the game (with logging on each toon) and to save a default. For example, in BDO, there are two keybindings I always changed (disabling a shortcut I never used and using that key for one that didn’t have a shortcut built in). It was a pain to remember to do this when I re-rolled.

On that basis, I agree with starlinvf: it’s easier to get 3rd party software to manage keyboard & mouse shortcuts. It won’t swap automatically with characters, but I get to decide what profiles are used when. I get to manage them without having to be on that character.

This system is exactly about imposing one method on others. If you want a guild that is 100% rep, then you can ask that of your members. You are not prevented from doing that with the current system. In contrast, if this system exists, it allows a GL to make that decision for the members of their guild.

Anyhow, it’s okay if you want to propose such a system. I am 100% confident that ArenaNet won’t invest any time into researching how it can be done. They err on the side of inclusiveness, not separation.

What about the people in norway that have no vat but are forced to pay it anyway since it go through england?

What about them? There’s no such thing as a “fair” price of, well, any product. There’s what the manufacturer charges, what the retailers charge after mark up, and what the consumer is willing to spend.

At any give point during the day, the value of currency A compared to B varies. At any given point, those who own currency A might not be willing to sell for currency B, unless the price is right and at some points, holders of A are ready to dump all they have for B.

In the end, it’s just easier for the retailer (in this case, DigitalRiver, who handles sales for ANet) to set a fixed price in a fixed number of currencies. And it’s simpler for them to pick a single number for all three currencies, even though sometimes dollars are worth more sterling, sometimes less; sometimes more euro, sometimes less.

If you think you can beat the arbitrage, then you can buy your own dollars & purchase the game via a US outlet (it unlocks accounts for EU just the same). Or you can pay the price in Euros/Sterling and chalk up the differences to convenience & other arbitrary service fees.

Yeah, I fully agree. It doesn’t have to be 100% complete and fully featured in order to be useful. I’d be happy with it just remembering my traits and skills, for example. I can swap gear manually.

That would be good. I’m even more forgiving: take a snapshot that gets placed side by side: I can match traits & skills to that easily. Sure, that’s more work, but I’d rather have something that makes it so I don’t have to memorize choices.

My advice to everyone who wants a specific thing:

  • If it’s available on the TP, convert gems to gold and buy it outright.
  • If it’s not, assume you’ll get 1 token per box and estimate how many boxes you’d need. For example, for Selfless Potion, you’d buy 10 for 1500 gems. Are you willing to spend that many gems for it?
  • Assuming “yes”, purchase boxes 10-at-a-time. You get the max discount possible and if you get lucky, you can stop sooner.

This way, you get what you want for the least amount of effort, with your expectations set sufficiently low that you can avoid disappointment. Your only surprises will be good ones

The “best” farm really depends on you. If you like farming silverwastes (or at least, don’t get too bored), the gold/hour is top notch. But if you’re like me, and get bored after one run per week, it’s a horrid way to try to earn.

There are 1000s of guides out there, as a quick internet search will show. Take a gander at those and then come back and ask about the ones that interest you the most.

For many people, simply playing the game earns a lot of coin, if you place custom sell orders after salvaging the stuff you don’t need. It’s not necessarily as fast as dedicated farms, but it’s often more fun, less likely to burn you out, and you can progress on something else of interest to you (e.g. story or achievements).

Seriously.
The concepts of these elite specs are lit!
The execution.. Messy

They have a test server (one used by a group of players). It will never be enough feedback to have things 100% ready.

What would really help is if folks like yourself you think the implementation is “messy” would describe what that actually means. What is the concept that you like? How does its execution fall short? What do you think they should have done instead (if indeed, you have a suggestion). Simply saying -1 doesn’t offer them anything to work with.

Build template in pof?

Illconceived Was Na.9781

We know Anet can’t/don’t want to implement a build template like GW1.

Actually, a while (a long while) after launch, they said they did want to add build templates, after thinking (pre-launch) that it was a bad for the game. They said they had some ideas and they’d eventually get around to thinking about they might go about implementing it.

In other words: it’s on their list, but never near the top.

(I don’t know why and honestly, I don’t care. I’d rather they started implementing incomplete solutions and work-arounds than to leave us with nothing. Snapshots of builds that we can’t load would be better than no snapshots, for example.)

If the sale you want ends before you get your gems, update your ticket and ask if they can help you out. I imagine if you ask graciously, they’ll figure out a way to help you out.

Good luck (and thanks for supporting the game!)

why no duel?

The idea of dueling has been proposed a number of times. Often, posters have explained why they like dueling in games. Sometimes, they’ve even tried to work with people who disagree, folks who see it as a distraction to the core game, folks who’d rather see ANet work on stuff, and folks who see it as undermining a core ‘feature’ of the game: cooperative PvE.

That doesn’t appear to be the case here. Instead of having a conversation, one poster can’t seem to offer more than, “the criticisms are inadequate” or “childish” and that people are against it because they are “scared.” There’s no way to have a conversation when someone is that unwilling to consider other points of view.

I’ll make one attempt to make my view clear: devs have limited resources; they can only work on some of the great ideas we suggest. Based on threads like this, it seems the dueling is incredibly popular among a tiny fraction of the population, rejected out of hand by a large fraction, and a majority probably don’t care if it’s in GW2 or not. I think there are so many other ideas that the majority would love to see or even just that the fraction of “yes, please” is larger than the fraction of “over my defeated character.”

Given that I’ve been wrong about such things before (e.g. I thought raids would be bad for the game; turns out they’ve been, on balance, great), I’m keeping an open mind about how ANet would implement something like dueling; it might be good.

Or in brief, it’s not at the top of the list for best cost:benefit for the community as a whole. Seems like a good feature for other games, but probably not GW2.

How long will be a patch every 5 minutes ?

For the next month? Two months? Three months? Forever?

Whats up with that?

Pacthidy patch patch.

Okay gotta go download the new patch that popped up while I was writing this.

;-P

There have been 7 patches to the game in August, which amounts to fewer than one every other day. You might, therefore, want to reconsider your specific hyperbole in attempting to make your argument.

You might also want to explain what exactly you’d like ANet to do instead. Should they not fix bugs? Should they leave major bugs during brief demo period? Should they leave issues that block people’s achievements for a longer period, so they can queue more fixes up into fewer patches?

In software this complex, stuff is going to break. Sometimes for reasons that perhaps (or even probably) ANet should have addressed pre-patch. But mostly, it’s not possible to catch everything before it goes live.

I’m sure we’d all like to patch less often. I’m sure we’d all prefer fewer bugs. But take a look at how little time we suffer a game outage. Almost all the game’s downtime has been DDoS attacks, a data center (managed by others) that went down, a DNS problem, and yeah, a few patches a month.

In short, while waiting for the next patch to download (whenever that happens), take another look at just how bad it is (or how good).

I’m sorry you’re still having trouble. Hopefully, it’s something simple for them to resolve. Meantime, I hope you found the other 20 spots & successfully ‘charged’ them.

Ember Bay nerfs?

Power of the Mists was removed from the game (and sort of replaced with various buffs/rewards in WvW directly). That has meant a 20% reduction on Wed-Fri/reset of a chance to get bonus gathers. That’s why you’re seeing less petrified wood.

Ember Bay seems as rewarding as it ever did to me. People are working on events for the map dailies, for Aurora, for P-wood. There’s competition, however, with the PoF demo and other maps.

And the Jade Construct fight has always been like that. If people know what they are doing, it’s an easy-ish, quick-ish fight (although the slowest/hardest of the EB bosses). But if people don’t know how to fight there, it drags and drags and drags. That was true the first day, the first month, and doesn’t seem to have changed.

Yes I placed them all in my bag, it’s not on bank inventory. Funny you mentioned positioning because I was also going circles around that I looked stupid

Oh, I meant wrong spot as in at e.g. a hero point instead of the master unlock. (I don’t actually think that you did that, but you’d be surprised at how often that’s the reason for a ‘bug’ report.)

Sigh. Well, if you still have a toon there, with an ingot, try again and then use the in-game /bug reporting tool (since that gives them position data, as well as other stuff). (If you don’t have time, this thread should serve as the notification, too.)

Probably someone was exploiting a bug. ANet usually disables ASAP, then starts to fix, then makes an announcement. Since it’s late (their time), we probably won’t hear until morning.
