Practically all of these suggestions would be OP, espcially the change to Assassin’s Signet; anyone up for traited perma-fury and might stacks to rival HGH?

You’re all getting the two back to front. *Fast cast ground targetting* changes ground targetted skills from a double press to a single press when it’s ON, not when it’s OFF.
Personally, I have it ON for every class I play, and I reccomend it to everyone. Once you know how far 900 and 1200 range are, it’s much, much more efficient to leave it ON.

Greatsword doesn’t suit the Thief even slightly and I hope that we never, ever get them. A main hand axe or mace would be 100x better.

A simple question, John: why can’t Anet hire one or two people to literally spend all day going between this forum and the class forums replyingto feedback? Would it really be that bad to have a dedicated forum guy/gal?

- x/D use #5
- D/P #5 followed by #2 for a leap through smoke field combo.
- Hide in Shadows heal, Blinding Powder, Shadow Refuge, and Shadow Trap utilities.
In PvE the best way to do it is to use x/D #5, stealth attack, auto chain, repeat.

I have seen insanely great gamers in the following classes:
Engineers
Guardians
Warriors
Elementalists
Mesmers
Necromancers
Thief
RangersAll great, all very experienced.
I’m pretty sure they win some and lose some just like everyone else. I don’t know how anything could be overpowered, and from reading a variety of posts on this forum, it would seem that there is always a way to outclass another class.
Does it matter? It would probably be best to just play and enjoy the game. Complaints should be about something that no one has a solution to.
I’m not very good with any of my characters, but I do my best to adjust. There doesn’t seem to be a need to complain if I can’t take out a D/P Thief, if I’ve seen others handle them easily, then I should learn from that and adjust accordingly.
The topic just pointed out an understanding, and that is great.
Play On!!

Recently I swapped the “regain initiative faster while in stealth” for the “gain 2 stacks of might when using a skill that stealths you” trait and after about half an hour I wasn’t having problems with the lack of initiative gain.
The trait that gives might stacks is a minor trait after specing 25 points into the SA tree, you can’t swap it, so I am not sure what you are talking about here.
Yea sorry… I am at work while I am typing this (was on the phone).. I had a feeling I got that wrong lol. I swapped that trait out for something, but since you pointed that out I couldn’t remember what for lol. (at the same time I went from 0/30/15/25/0 to 0/30/30/10/0 so I was confused). Now that I am looking at the wiki – My correct statement is I swapped Patience for Shadow’s Embrace.
I wasn’t aware anyone used Patience.
That’s not me being a prick, but isn’t it sort of useless? I can’t recall if it was bugged, or the boosted regen was so minor that 2 init on stealth was considered almost always better.
There’s a reason everyone runs Infusion of Shadow over Patience, I just can’t remember the specific reason why.
From what I remember, you’re exactly right, the regeneration of Patience is mathematically worse in every way.

I really need some help. I’m close on finishing the dreamer, and can’t decide if i want it on a thief or a ranger. I favor the thief profession more, but i’m not sure if its worth it. I don’t pvp or wvw, i do only dungeons/pve/events.
Not sure how much the short bow will serve me in dungeons/pve/events. I got to play a thief in a dungeons and cant say i really used the short-bow a lot. I love the short bow tagging, but not sure if its enough to put the dreamer on a thief.
On other hand, short bow on rangers is kind of poop because aoe is almost non-existent, and its quite annoying, the only thing i like about short bows on ranger is the fast and addictive animation. I’m really in a pinch! help!I would recommend you to chill for a month or 3 and then see if you still like thief. Because what you are writing, indicates you are a newbie and you dont actually play thief that much…
This. ^
Not to be rude, but how the hell can you not know just how much YOU use SB on YOUR Thief? How we play is irrelevant, most Thieves SB as their second set 24/7, but you may decide to never use it.
Sit on it until you’ve actually developed your own playstyle, then reconsider it.

I would love to see a slightly weaker version of these in sPvP without an ICD and a reduced amount of stacks as you suggested. We may finally see a viable build for a P/P Thief, even if the rest of the set would still be crap.

Someone verify (i’m on a role in these forums tonight
) mesmers have a BS counter where they stand in their clones. Can we just prevent this by CnD’ing the clone away?
It has always been a good counter to just pull out SB and AoE them down or chain CnD on them until they’re all gone. The second option keeps you healing in stealth the entire time, but the first allows you to continue the fight much more quickly and avoid a shatter.

Just a quick note on your question about which utilities, the three you mentioned (Step, Refuge, and Sig of Shadows) are pretty much standard in WvW for most Thieves. I’ve been running them with BV and Hide/Withdraw for a LONG time and they’ve never let me down. With your build you could use Withdraw with Centaur runes and Vigorous Recovery for near perma-swiftness and replace SoS with Blinding Powder, or do the same but use different runes for less swiftness up time.

I like TS as is right now. Up the damage a bit. Hit harder from behind would work with me or add a bleed stack from behind.
Blind and Confusion x3 @ 5 seconds from the front or Daze and bleeding x3 @ 10 seconds from behind.
The freakin icon has a serrated blade for crying out loud.
A bleed stack on a power build? Whoopdy bloody doo… The confusion stacks aren’t a terrible idea, but I’d rathr they just undo the nerf and up the damage by 10%. It would make an S/D control build viable again, and since CnD is so highly telegraphed, I wouldn’t think of it as OP.

For a PvE Leveling build you actually can go full condi and spam #3 with caltrops, dodgetrops, might on dodge, and a few other traits and just faceroll absolutely everything.
In dungeons just go for as much Zerker as you’re comfortable with and put Soldiers in the minor slots that you want if necessary.

I can’t be bothered finding the link, but Arganthium has a solid S/D + SB 10/0/0/30/30 build that works pretty kitten well, despite people’s misconceptions about the necessity of 30 in CS and a Zerker amulet. It is a power build that only focusses on the utility gained from Trickery instead of the condi damage.

Infusion is applied for every single time that you gain stealth with any Thief ability, including leap and blast in smoke fields layed by any class. I’m unsure if it works with the Mesmer mass invisibility elite.
Note that it works even if you’re already in stealth which is how stealth stacking works. It also works with every pulse of shadow refuge.

what do you mean by blind invulnerability? would that be passive or active effect?
Active ofc 5 secs of blind invul, like engis skill .
Well i use SoS Since launch i’ll never drop it. i like the stomp utility. Can you link me that engie skill?
Yea I like to use it for stomping sometimes, but if the opponent were smart they’d clear the blind off by AAing you first, then use their anti-stomp skill.
That’s why you use it just before you complete your stomp and they use their counter, works flawlessly every time.

Would the D/P combo that gives you stealth also give you the +2 initiative with infusion? Also, I don’t really understand 2 things. First, how is perma stealth possible with the two seconds long revealed timer and second, why would the combo field be better for stealth than X/D #5?
Infusion is crucial, without it the D/P combo is useless for stealth stacking.
The combo field is better because you don’t require a target and as long as you don’t hit someone after the first heartseeker, you can point your camera down and heartseeker through the smoke field 2 more times (3 if you’re lucky though this is incredibly hard) in a square shape to gain stealth. If you do this again as soon as you have enough initiative you will never run out of stealth.
The 3 second revealed time is irrelevant.

Boring read but a class should never be able to perma stealth when there’s no way to detect stealthed players. Its pretty easy fix as well but looks like peeps at anet don’t know wtf they’re doing. Remove Leap Finisher from Hearseeker, increase initiatives of CnD to 10 and decrease its damage to Stalker’s Strike (ranger’s dagger evade attack) and we instantly don’t even need to nerf stealth anymore or Thief backstab damages nor will you see cheesy P/D. If this hurts the class to the point of making it ‘bad’ (which wouldn’t be the case at all) they could always increase its HP to 15k as many other classes. Its funny that after 1y you can still perma stealth and spam CnD on walls to stealth rofl anet.

The only way to increase its duration is 15 in SA. Note that this doesn’t increase the stealth duration of Shadow Refuge pulses or combo field stealth (blast/leap through smoke).

OP, You’re looking at this the wrong way, I’ll try and explain why. Sorry this may end up long.
.
.
.
This isn’t the kind of game where you can turn yourself into a tank. You showed a video of you standing in one place, doing no dodges, attacks, or damage mitigation skills, taking damage from 4 attackers at once for about 20 seconds, without even any use of protection boon. This is impressive by itself, and yet you’re complaining about taking too much damage.
.
.
.No, what is impressible is that toughness seems broken; the build that I had was purely a tank. If I have a tank build that is receiving incredible hits then I might think there is some kind of bug with the toughness code.
Way to just completely ignore his thorough and accurate explanation and say, “Oh, you’re wrong, I made my Warrior a tank so that means this game does have tanks because I said so, and Toughness really is supposed to mitigate a lot more damage than it does, because I said so and I made a tank and that’s that!”
Go read his reply again and soak it in. Toughness isn’t bugged. It is working as intended. It is not supposed to mitigate extreme amounts of damage. The combat system in GW2 shares heavy similarities to an Action RPG; active defence is the only true defence. There is no such thing as pure passive mitigation.

I am not a great keybinder. I do not have the fastest reactions. Realizing those weaknesses, If I don’t have fast reactions and know my keybinds in a blink, am I going to completely suck on this class in WvW?
I know everyone likes to spout how pro they are. I don’t care really. I want to get honest opinions before I invest a lot of time into a new class—namely the thief.
2nd question, are there more forgiving and easier to play builds? I ask because I see posts like Jumpers, and how he has a build he reccomends, but people comment how high the skill cap is.
I’m thinking, maybe I can start easy and learn the simpler builds and go from there.
What do you guys think?
Thanks for your help in advance.
I’m pretty average. Thief requires faster reaction times than a lot of other classes. If you are talking about WvW roaming, then thief can wreck people whose builds are not meant for fighting alone or in small fights. However you will have to spend a lot of time practicing to fight against other roamers efficiently.
If you want to try out thief, I’d recommend starting out with Bemeric1’s stealth based Dagger/Pistol build for WvW roaming.
+1
His build definitely is a good way to start, lots of survivability with stealth, AOE blind and daze. It’s also pretty tanky with 30 toughness and 20 vit.
It also gives you a second to think what to do, or run away.
Here’s his vid – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRcTKt47ixkGotta love yishis. Wish he would explain just a little more. That’s video five and in six he goes back to a previous build. I’m new so understanding why he bounces between builds….well confuses the f *&%^ out of me.
I guess Ill just try both and see what plays smoother.
Basically, he swapped to D/P when revealed was nerfed to 4 seconds in WvW and then went back to D/D when it was reversed. He then shelved his Thief until Anet fixes various issues with the class. He now plays his Engineer primarily.
He said “without pro fast reactions” not “without mouse with extra buttons”.
Are you guys dumb? More mouse buttons = easier / faster reaction times. Use your dang brain.
This thread is dumb anyway “can I be a marathon runner with cerebral palsy?”
That is entirely subjective, with the limited amount of keys required in this game, rebinding the number keys to letters on your keyboard is just as effective depending on the player/key binds.
Also, your comment is distasteful as kitten, who are you to say that with someone with cerebral palsy can’t complete a marathon? kitten you.

If you’re comfortable with your ability to avoid damage then you can change the Soldiers amulet to a full Zerker one and the Runes to something like 6 Ogre or 5 Scholar and 1 Divinity.
If the Necro uses conditions you’ll eat him for breakfast, and the Guardian/Engineer will die quickly once you strip their boons with S/D #3. As for the other Warrior, they will be easy with D/P #3 and #5 which apply blinds.

The general rule is that if you can’t walk to it directly without being obstructed then you can’t Step to it. This obviously isn’t always the case, but it’s a good rule of thumb for places you haven’t yet tested yourself in matches or wherever.
Either way, it does need to be adressed, because sometimes simply stepping down a hill will get you taken back to your original spot.

Divinity, Wurm, Scholar, Melandru and Lyssa are the only real choices IMO.
Divinity/Wurm offer the most versatility for adding some defense depending on how much you can afford. Scholar is the best for DPS. And Lyssa/Melandru are the best for utility purposes.
Wouldn’t something like 5 Scholar and 1 Divinity be better than Scholar runes below 90% health though? I honestly don’t think that the 6th Scholar rune is viable because keeping your health above 90% at all times is close to impossible, so you’re going to lose that bonus pretty quickly in any real fight.

greatswords for Thieves is by far one of the less ridiculous options and would likely not be so far off (compared to say, staves, scepters, foci, hammers, shields, axes, etc).
… and with that, the entire Internet imploded under the sheer weight of the utter bullcrap that was added to it with every passing day.
You can’t seriously tell me that a greatsword fits a Thief more thematically than an off-hand sword, axes, scepters (all of our shadow art is a form of denial MAGIC), and focuses? Hell, even maces make more kitten sense than a greatsword!
If you want skinny characters wielding gigantic swords, go back to playing JRPG’s. This is Guild Wars 2, most of the crap in it makes sense. ;\

What traits have you been running? I seriously suggest that you DON’T buy all PVT gear, instead go for a mix of Zerker and Valkyrie (or Soldier) and have traits that are more survivable than what I assume you’re currently running.
Here’s an example of an ideal setup for a Thief using D/D (though the exact same gear, traits, and trinkets can be used for D/P):
By going full PVT you’re severely dropping the amount of damage you can do in comparison to the survivability that you gain. A mix is always better.

Swapping one of our three most powerful traits in that line (Infusion, Embrace, Cloaked) with Last Refuge would create an imbalance in the Shadow Arts trait-line. As it stands, Thieves who go 30 into SA (which is a lot of us) must choose between the three aforementioned traits for their Adept and Master traits while they take Rejuvenation as their Grandmaster. Allowing Thieves to take all three of these traits in addition to Rejuvenation would be overpowered, and would then result in one of them (or Rejuvenation) being nerfed.
Create an imbalance in the shadow arts trait? You put a whole lot of too much faith into anet. As if any of the trees were remotely balanced to begin with.
Did I suggest that all of the trees are perfectly balanced? No, I did not, I instead pointed out the careful balance between those four traits, being that they are the most powerful and most commonly used in the SA trait-line. Swapping one of these with LR would create an imbalance that would result in a nerf.
So yes, genius, replacing it would be stupid, but perhaps you haven’t seen stupid so really don’t have any basis for comparison.
I read your post, so here’s my basis.
Very mature, kudos to you.
Oh, and suggestion #3 was a joke? Well kitten me dead, I never would have known without you telling me! Thank you, oh wise master of subtlety!
Yeah, you guessed in hindsight. After being told. #1
Again with the insults, my my, you certainly are full of reason!

Thank you for the lesson regarding your beliefs adolf. I’ll be sure to correct my post. Could you have guessed that english isn’t my mother tongue?
As for my criticism, these forums have by far the worst filtering I’ve seen. “Get over it”? Yeah, no. I’m not a sheep nor a mute. I point out bad things in games and anything supporting them, which includes these forums.
No, you speak English quite well, so I had no idea that it wasn’t your native language. That, however, is completely irrelevant. Note that I said “no insult intended”, I was simply correcting you in the politest way possible. If I was being an kitten about it I would have called you an idiot or belittled you for your spelling.
As for pointing things out, great, we should all do that more often, but equating a mild censorship program with a few translation bugs to be ironed out to fascism is just ridiculous, and in that case, yeah, “get over it”.
Now, unless you’re going to give me a reasonable response with an argument that doesn’t involve “you’re wrong, Anet sucks, your post was stupid”, I’m done with this thread.

The only reasonable option is the second one that you mentioned. Anything else is just stupid, in my opinion.
To be honest, I used to dislike Last Refute, but it wasn’t until recently that I realised that it has saved my butt while roaming in WvW far mire times than it has killed me. It’s actually not a bad trait at all, it just needs to work differently from regular Stealth.
Making a life-changing minor trait a major trait instead of a minor one, and replacing it with the essential Infusion, thus allowing the fans to pick it while not forcing the haters into having it, is stupid to you? You clearly haven’t seen stupid then. Just hit the back buton and read any other thread on this forsaken forum. Or take a walk. Suggestion 3 was obviously a joke.
Yes, that’s exactly what I said, congratulations on your ability to read!
