I was doing even more poorly than usual and happened to check my traits. For the second time, they are different than I set them.
The last time I changed all my passwords (including my email pass.) It looks like my traits are being reset somehow.
This looks like a possible bug.. are traits reverting to default under some circumstances?
I’m in my fourth year now of playing Mesmer. The fact that I’m still here is mostly hardheadedness. You, Ross Biddle, and a couple of others have been kind enough to help now and then over the years. Thank you.
Nevertheless, I stand by my statements. There are players who deliberately call for nerfs and who to all appearances want the class to be underpowered. I suspect this contributes to a feeling of being elite.
Help is hard to come by. No one will tell you the combos.. the skill sequences.. Such as I know I learned mainly through careful analysis of gameplay videos and trial and error.
That is why I suggested YouTube. I might have also included Reddit and a couple of other sites.
We, Mesmers in general, are hurt by this.
I get the following error message in Visual Studio; Unhandled exception at 0×10028C5B (LavasoftTcpService.dll) in Gw2.exe: An invalid parameter was passed to a function that considers invalid parameters fatal.
Going to try repair.
This isn’t the place to ask, truthfully. Most of the builds and information are long outdated.
There is also a reticence about sharing. From my POV there’s a faction that believes that Mesmer should be elite and as hard to play as possible.
I’ve gleaned a few bits and pieces by watching youtube videos and then watching them again in slow motion. Watch at 25% speed and pay special attention to the exact sequence that skills are activated in.
I highly recommend Vash Bash and Osicat on youtube. Both are very helpful but the devil is in the details. Again, watch very closely the sequence and timing of skills.
Also, be careful who you disagree with on forum, no matter how sincere. You risk being ostracized if you do not.
Taunt is another example of over tuned niche powers on ranger. The also have superior range, fire and forget missles, frequent access to stealth and the ability to attack while not even in line of sight. Sad. Especially sad in light of the arguments against Mesmer ie too frequent stealth and ability to attack while out of sight.
Ok so how does that work? shatter involves all current clones. Do you mean single clone shatters?
Point taken /bow.
An interesting site, though I am hesitant to give an api key. I’m not sure ANET will enjoy you shilling for it though. What’s your angle in this?
@Shaogin.
I don’t love what most people consider “holy.” That aside, spam seems to be the way to get read in this forum. Spam the topic to the top of the forum often enough, it might even be heard. Keep spamming it and you may be lucky enough to have your idea thought about.
Still PVE dueling is just ripe for abuse. At the very least it would have to be restricted to level 20 + to keep the newbies from being farmed for laughs.
You might explain a bit about the “Rocket league” and why you think it’s better. The matches are hurting atm so a constructive idea would be worth hearing.
@MCHarris
You’re thinking of The Bane. I admit the first time I saw it I thought it was a dueling arena.
Welcome back to Rome. Hail Imperator Smodur those who are about to die salute you!
Seriously though 1v1 dueling is available and relatively easy to access. If you could do it in PVE people would go to starting areas and abuse newbies for fun. “Oh, I see you just finished the introduction run, wanna duel?” Newbie then gets disgusted and leaves the game.

disclaimer I main a non PU condi shatter Mesmer in PvP and a Venom Share thief in PVE.
MY current pet peeve, ( for years now), is LB/Gs Ranger with hound and wolf pet. It simply does way too much damage and CC. The really frustrating part is that they can do it while out of range of my skills.
Rangers have frequent stealth and can attack when not in LOS, (using [barrage] and the pet.), these are two complaints leveled at PU Mesmers.
I don’t play Ranger much because I feel bad when my pet gets hurt. Still, killing the pets will take the edge off a ranger. The pets do almost nothing to defend themselves.
With the shatter nerfs, thieves are a big threat again. They aren’t a guaranteed death for me like before.. but still very much have the upper hand.
Guardians are annoying. Fights with them usually stalemate and drag on until one or the other of us gets +1’d.
Warriors… They can do a lot of damage in a big hurry and move fast. Still, I can go into a fight knowing I have a reasonable chance.
Necros.. don’t even get me started on necros. Condition builds like mine will probably lose unless I can +1 a fight and snipe them. I can beat an MM Necro.
Engi, I can usually beat an Engi. I approach with caution but confident.
A staff Ele makes a good target. A d/d Ele is a tough fight but if I can dodge or block the [Ride the Lightning] rush I may get them.
PU Mesmer? That’s a fight I don’t enjoy. I lose a bit more often than I win.

I don’t leave matches because I would feel I’d abandoned my team. That’s not something I’m willing to do.
I’ve considered it though. There have been quite a few 100-500 matches lately.
I pick up notable names. Like those who are either too tough for me or an easy mark.
and ofc this sort of thing:
-edit- but this was funny rather than a real advantage.
Win rate currently in the mid 20% range.. just lost a match by 400 points. This is NOT the way to convince new players to PvP and f2p is all about new players.
This and the “I win” builds make pvp pretty unattractive to people coming in.
My other account just got to Dolyak rank and the ability to queue ranked.
She left unranked with a bit more than a 50% win rate. In ranked her record is around 30% and falling. Many matches are roflstomps with 200+ point differences. Not only that, I have time to sit at my comp between matches and make lace and read a novel.
Matchmaking exists specifically to prevent this kind of situation. It’s not a learn to play issue, since the matchmaking system is theoretically matching me with similar skill levels.
Too truthfull, ouch.
The fact that my account was clearly hacked ( changed skill bar and traits + a different client logging in to my account while I was online ) shows that the two factor authentication failed.
I have SMS verification. It obviously didn’t keep another from logging into my account either.
First, my password was unique to guild wars. Second, I have all the latest security on my comp and have set up with ANET’s SMS verification.
Lastly, I don’t appreciate your deprecation. Let me take this moment to say that your past laurels as a Mesmer don’t really cut any ice with me. You use them to call for nerfs and to pick on players who you decide are unskilled.
You’re dead wrong, Pyro.
@Ross Biddle
LOL at that .. inasmuch as I have expressly asked you to help me learn and made perceptible progress with your help. ( In fact, I wrecked you in PvP last night during a fight at mid, FoeFire ) The student reflects the teacher to some extent.
Still, I admit to being a mediocre Mesmer despite nearly 3 years of trying.
I logged in on my thief and got 2 minute delays on taking damage and skills failing to trigger. Then got bumped with a notice someone else had logged into my account.
My current main Mesmer, Melisande, has been used in pvp since the last time I logged in and has the traits and skill bar changed.
This might be a good time to change your PW.
I just logged into my pvp Mesmer and found the skill selections and traits changed. Melisande Shahrisai one of my characters on Ithilwen.1529. I’m looking to see what’s missing.
-edit- I went through the verification process with SMS, it didn’t work, apparently.
I have changed my password. There is still huge lag. I experienced 2 minute delays on taking damage and skills failing to trigger. So someone may still be logged in on the old credentials.
(edited by Ithilwen.1529)
I just got bumped mid dungeon with the message that another client had connected using my account. I need to fix this asap.
-edit- I just changed my password but this makes me super nervous.

I don’t even bother with bounce. It’s not terribly useful in a regime where it “might” be effective and clones and phantasms are so short lived.
For that matter, I don’t bother with phantasms except kittenter fodder. They suck… to put it succinctly.
LOL at that, thanks for the smile. I second that.
Clone Death was by no means “too easy to play.” I don’t play a PU Mesmer so can’t speak directly to how easy it is. They are pretty annoying to play against though.
What I liked about clone death was; It dealt with the issue of our soap bubble clones that frequently don’t survive long enough to shatter.
Also, it continued the GW1 concept of a Mesmer being a class that punished certain actions. In this case, players were punished for mindlessly cleaving clones.
Unfortunately a dev lost to the build and it was completely removed.
Power aoe spam is skill-less. Do you aim a firestorm, really? A warrior burn field? Spam is the name of the game in GW2. There’s no energy penalty for doing it and therefore no real reason not to.
Yes, you have to manage cd’s a little. That really isn’t enough to restrict the “push the combo buttons really fast” meta.
The argument that condition builds aren’t skilled doesn’t hold water. Power builds are subject to the same complaint.
Talking kitten is part of competing. Dale Earnhardt ( famous NASCAR competitor ) once publicly advised his fellow drivers to tie gasoline soaked rags around their ankles while racing, “So the ants don’t crawl up and eat that candy kitten.”
It does get out of hand, but I don’t see that cracking down on it would do any good and it might damage the community. Nobody likes an excessively restrictive game.
LOL at the idea that Mesmer can’t die. Revenant is by far the best 1v1. It’s like “wtf just happened?.”
After Revenant, D/D ele is probably your best choice. Still, PvP really isn’t about 1v1. I’ve lost many a game because teammates were more focused on proving something than gaining points.
I think Raid on the Capricorn was the first pvp map I played and it was very cool. I’d love to see it come back, +1.
This was not a passive mode at all and was my favorite playstyle. By that logic, Engineer turrets and Ranger pets, ( and Ele elite pets, Norn racial call bird spell, Ogre Runes, Golemancer Runes, Privateer Runes, Necromancer pets on enemy death.. all necromancer pets for that matter… the list goes on ), and should be deleted. All are “fire and forget.”
The argument that Clone Death was “passive” is not valid because it’s only one of many very “passive” modes.
Unfortunately, a clone death mesmer wrecked a dev. The build was then completely removed from the game. It was flatly stated on one of anet’s videos.
As to it being non Mesmer… I think the history of Tyria contradicts that.
Of course.. Empathy was one of the very first skills a new Mesmer learned in GW1. Yet retaliation has also been mostly removed from Mesmser.
So, tradition doesn’t seem to cut much ice.
The beta results speak for themseleves. I watched reapers and revs roflstomp for the whole beta, both are clearly OP.
I’ve watched Rev’s rolfstomp at mid for the whole beta. I wish they’d just go away.
At over 3000 games, I feel similar to the OP. I go play GW1 when it just gets to be too much.
As I said, the beta record will bear me out. The Reaper is too powerful by half or more. It does in fact one shot light armor with very little effort and it needs a major nerf.
I can usually beat a non d/d ele. Laughing at me doesn’t change the game record.
Reapers are killing easily and tanking way too much.
The record of this beta will no doubt show as much. Laughing at me shows your inability to defend your statements. So laugh all you like, you have no credibility against the beta stats.
Actually I can beat a d/d ele about half the time. Staff Ele more often. As to standing around.. pull and chill followed by instant I win button weapon spin.
Yes I carry condi cleanse, no it’s not an adequate defense. I’m willing to bet that the win records will show reaper and revenant dominant in pvp at the moment.
No comment on your inability to grasp.
As to knowing what I’m playing or not… I admit to being a mediocre’ish Mesmer. This is not about me.
The fact of the matter is that I and quite a few others are seeing the reaper tank ridiculously. I’m also getting 100-0 1 hit nuked. The spec is way overpowered.
I just came from yet another match. Got hammered in one shots repeatedly by reaper. My shatters had no perceptible effect whatever.
This class is game breakingly strong. Despite all your sophistry I see what’s happening in game. A reaper simply walked up to me, thorugh my fire .. spun a weapon once and insta killed me.
That’s stupidity and craziness.
I don’t use burning much. I’m more focused on confusion. As to melee, are you seriously suggesting I try to melee a Reaper as a condi Mesmer?
Don’t forget three clones apiece. That’d be some serious confusion.
Saiyan I posted it cos it was funny and for a moment I thought “wtf , anet gave guards clones now?”
And again, couldn’t even touch the reaper. ANET this is a game breaker, kill it fast.
I think a major contributing factor is the lack of attention to balance. Hambow reigned supreme for weeks, months? Machine gun bow ranger, burn guard, d/d ele, Revenant, Reaper…
Meanwhile Mesmer was left almost unusable for years. Any new player who had the misfortune to like Mesmer ( me ) was in for a lot of bashing.
The game is heavily tilted to reaction speed and fast button pushing. That strongly favors one demographic of players, ( males in their teens and 20’s who have money to buy high end gear ) .. the rest go begging.
I’m consistently not even denting reaper. That’s stupid. This whole idea needs a huge rework/nerf. I spent most of the last match trying to hurt a reaper and never managed to visibly reduce his health pool. ( and got top player for condition damage dealt )
Sorry that’s just gamebreaking strong.
No, look again more carefully. I wondered myself for a moment.
Here’s a funny scene from PvP this morning.. at first I thought wtf? Then it got clearer. This would be a Mesmer’s nightmare though.
Watching these elite specs in PvP, one question keeps ringing in the back of my mind. How will “normal” specs compete?
Will you have to own HoT to play PvP? Will non elite specs be viable at all? The Elite specs are already pretty kitten normal builds. What will happen when it becomes a bigger thing and more of the population is running elites?
I wasn’t complaining until I saw it in pvp. Squishy it definitely is not. I watched a reaper tank 4. There’s no evading and it’s got a high damage (auto?) attack and death shroud to boot…
