Daggerstorm is useless because you get focused with it and even pocket raptors can live through a full casting of it. It would be a great skill to take out necro minions and mesmer illusions in PvP but…they’re too tanky for that and it’s inferior to the daredevil elite anyway.
Good to know – now I wonder how I killed all that raptors so easily. And I do wonder why I never used it on mesmer clones – oh wait, I just have 8k hours on thief =)
RedArachnid: I do wonder if you’re really talking about solo PvE (“all just zerg running” – zerg or zerk?)
The problem thief has got since June: No boons. All other classes: Endless self stacking boons.
I am not that great of a player myself, but I really think HoT is makin me into a better player. I still have to figure out the pocket raptors, rolling devils and especially the mushrooms in a fight with my thief. That will come over time or they may nerf them a bit (cause man they hit hard).
First of, the weakest class right now is thief, so the mobs might or might not be nerfed but it’s unlikely that it’s because they’re overall really hard – they’re hard for thieves.
Second: Equip Shortbow and Daggerstorm. Use the first against all of them, the second against the raptors. Stay out of red cirles and try to get the rolling devils (that’s these stealth thingys, right?) out of their smoke field and then you’re good =)
On your post: I’m a wvw player – I can do PvE and am fine with that but my love is wvw. So I didn’t really need the expansion- I was happy with how things were. That’s probably why I’m not disappointed in the expansion, but I am a bit disapointed that there has been no balance since June and also wvw is on the brink – because of HoT. Wvw is a complex topic, so it will be hard to figure out what exactly is needed to make it “good” again. Most complaints I have seen are about balance lately. And since wvw is a mess I am in PvE mostly anyway, so I can’t really complain about Proofs of heroics anymore
Problem solved, right?
Cuz I’m having a great time running around with High risk/Low reward.
Lol – same here
Although I think I just switch to rev hammer and join the pirate ship.
I get the idea behind reveal: zergs in wvw use stealth as a deceptive maneuver and reveal from engis and revenants works against that – but it also destroys half of one class and that is something that should’ve been taken into consideration before. Even our stealthless weaponset staff requires stealth for one meager CC (I’m dishing out 1000% more CC with 2 skills on my revenant).
Whatever you come up with; reveal still hurts every thief.
I’m revealed by all professions that have reveal – please don’t come with the “but no one uses it” stuff =)
What I mentioned about reveal is true.
If you are revealed constantly by all professions with reveal, than you play often vs players with odd non-meta builds.
I find that unlikely as most players I meet use their stronger builds/meta builds often and those usually lack reveal.
When I play Daredevil thief I rarely meet people with reveal.
Besides, Daredevil thief nowadays is a lot about evading and dodging and less about stealth, compared to pre-Hot expansion Thief.
Look at my signature – wvw players are players as well – and they’re probably not using meta builds – I don’t, never did.
And yeah, like gray said: if you don’t stealth you won’t notice reveal.
It would be great if “vanilla builds” weren’t deleted with HoT but that is what happend – and what actually happened before.
The reveal stuff is something that made me lose my faith in the balancing team – no matter whether or not “there’s a new thief with perma evades” as that will have to be nerfed at some point if anet is serious about competitive play. What will be left of thief after that?
So, on my first character, I am trying to find the fun in the combat system. I’m really struggling. I rolled a Charr Thief.
1. The rune/skill/weapon system in the game seems incredibly counter-intuitive. I’m sure this problem will go away when I learn the game — are there any meaningful tutorials that assumes the system makes no sense and explains everything?
2. Going by the few ability slots, rotation doesn’t seem complex. In fact, it seems extremely casual. However, the system mixes in action elements like dodging which appear to be necessary in order not to die. To me, Wildstar is a joke because it is too action-oriented — is GW2 going to be plagued with the same problem?
3. Thiefs. I understood going into this game really doesn’t have a stealth class, but so far I just don’t see how this character is going to go out ganking anything if the opponent sees you coming a mile away. Escapes seems powerful though…is Thief really just for trolling?
4. Voice acting. It’s….atrocious. Maybe my expectations have been too heavily skewed by WoW and SWTOR, but is there some way to listen to my character in battle without cringing? Do you just become desensitized to it? Are there other races with better voice acting? kitten .
First mistake: rolling a thief – you won’t have much fun with that class at the moment.
1) You’re supposed to use the same 6 runes on your armor, they give you a buff you want, so look at the buffs they give and decide which one you want.
2) Thief has got no rotation – the only class that has none as thieves have got the initative system – you’re free to use any skill you like (as long as you have initative). wildstar is hard for me as it’s not action loaden enough – it feels stiff compared to GW.
So, I guess this game is even worse for you – you can however go for Guardian (dragon hunter if you have HoT) or Ranger – they can pretty much stand in a safe spot and pew pew – not much fun though. Probably works with Revenant hammer as well (but you need HoT)
3) Thieves are a stealth class – but they have been destroyed recently, so can’t say much about them right now- maybe they will be good again, maybe they won’t. They once had the highest single target damage in game, nowadays every other class does more damage. For the damage they used to dish out them being glassy was justified, if you’re into pvp/wvw better don’t rely on stealth thanks to the reveal traits/skills which were brought into this game (without compensation = a thief is a free lootbag).
4) I play with “my voices” turned off.

snip
I wasn’t comparing the two games, I was comparing the two mechanics.
In one game you were pretty much dependend on other players – in this game you aren’t.
You guys make it appear though as if you were helplessly at mercy of those evil TP flippers with their endless knowledge. You aren’t.
You can obtain anything in this game without other players (except dungeon tokens, fractal relics, stuff from raids and some group events are hard to solo).
Everybody in this game has got the exact same chance to get anything. If you’re demotivated by that then I don’t know what motivates you.
My revenant hasn’t yet unlocked his elite ( Buddy: “Don’t you dare to do map completion without me, but I’m stuck in an endless pvp loop until I’m diamond – go play some wvw.” Wvw Commander: “OOHHHH ENEMIEEES RUUUNN FOR YOUR LIVEEES!!”
So, I can only compare umm vanilla Rev to Thief (who I play vanilla again as vault destroyed my wrist) :
He’s doing stupidly good, my rev – I’m using Dwarf and Shiro and basically spam both – he’s got insane (understatement) CC, does insane damage with S/S and Hammer (yes, I was able to do a little zerg fighting before the commander ran away again) and staff has got a really nice block against projectiles – hammer as well. Thief’s “block” would be daggerstorm and Bandit’s something which has a taunt included ("yaay, I managed to escape the enemy zerg… wait, why am I running back?
").
Haven’t yet tested Revenant on my usual mobs, but I’m pretty certain that the dps is higher – be it because all the utility and boons which thief has got no access to anymore.
ETA: That was to Blood Red Arachnid’s ranking
To people who say that you can stop the map closure by filling the map: I never saw this working, so far it was always game over after 60min. The notification goes away after some time but that seems to be a visual bug only.
The notification and door at the lower right corner go away when you waypoint.
Not sure if I’ve ever stayed at a map for one hour after the notification went away (without me waypointing) – so I don’t know whether or not they close anyway – but I’ll test it the next time this happens.
And your point is?
a) Thief is fine
b) DH is OP
or both?
I’m revealed by all professions that have reveal – please don’t come with the “but no one uses it” stuff =)
I heard so, also that people are able to hear a backstab – but I can’t with the dialogues.
Nah, he just needs to look good =)
I really wondered how people are able to play with dialog the 5 mins I had it – so much drivel “strooong! eat my dust.”
I dunno if they are all the same but my thief is human, and she says a number of things “and stay down!” “It’s over!” “You’re history!” On the final stomp bit that is.
kitten , now I’m tempted to activate the voice on my toon. I’ve been told he sounds like a potato..
Edit: He mumbles something like “You’re done” and “You’re history” – and he does sound like a potato.

As to the potential problems, yes, I suspect we will get a few bugs and issues to start with. That is to be expected. But we have problems now, and big problems at that, so something needs to be done. There is no guarantee the megaserver will be a good solution, but there is also no guarantee it will be a bad one either. It is just some peoples opinions that it may improve things.
Let me see, with Hot I shouldn’t be able to port in enemy structures owned by us anymore. on the borderlands that are the only waypoints that work for me though. That since HoT. It might seem like a minor annoyance but in fact it’s a big one and the main reason why I’m EB, although there the WPs are always contested as well since the NPCs love to attack mobs.
Don’t know if it’s really that hard to understand (for someone who doesn’t really play wvw) but stuff needs to work in wvw.
Edit: forgot to point out why I wrote this: bugs in wvw are for me thrice as bad as in any other game mode. By leaving them in place it’s another reason for me not to play that game mode.
(edited by Jana.6831)
But no, thief is fine in Solo PvE. I’ve solo’d the Mordremoth without much issues (besides game-breaking bugs).
Don’t forget the (former) biggest advantage thieves have towards npcs: stealth.
I find it easier to solo champs with thief because of that, stealth gives me time to reposition and sometimes to think.
When it comes to usual mobs though most of my chars (all power) do the job faster. I’m a mess with mesmer and partly with engi though, but my engi seems to carry me through everything. Oh and I’m the worst Guard NA and EU but when playing with others I miraculously manage to use the right skills at the right time – don’t ask me why.
She just said that it does happen and that it’s to protect Anet……. My friends are not lying. Stop assuming people are cheater yo.
Gaile tried to help your friend to get their own gems. No idea whether or not your friend got into contact with the customer support, but maybe they should and should check why exactly they have been banned to prevent that from happening again.
We get that your issue right now is to buy that glider to make your friend happy, but maybe solving the initial issue is easier and better (I would hate to live in fear because I bought gems).
Yeah, that was just an example as how anet makes it easier to stomp players – I’m not really happy with downed skills as well and also not with traits that buff these skills. On the one hand it’s unfair towards those who won the fight, who then maybe rather 111 to death instead of risking being brought down from nearly full health to 0, on the other hand: on how many useful skills do we miss out because of this?
But yes, that’s another topic.
I don’t disagree, just kind of merging both your arguments, because you’re both right.
Anet does some dangerous stuff lately and brings in things they then nerf on thief (basically) which doesn’t make that much sense. But (that’s your argument) : does it even make sense to have these things in game?!
There’s not so much counter play to qickness when downed, except if you’re a downed revenant.
Yes, thief is pretty weak compared to other classes.
Don’t mind the raw damage put out with a backstab, rangers just apply 25 stacks of vulnerability and do the job twice as fast.
You have a point, Sir Vincent, but on the other hand, why is one of our elite skills “insta stomp”, why do Revenants get easy access to quickness? Why is there such thing as “rez faster” – all of this is already undermining the play and counterplay of downed state.
You mean the forced revealed by other classes? Yes that is a major issue which is a bit forgotten due to the other problems our class has got. But once the game is halfway balanced the reveal skills will hurt a lot more (we’re more dead than alive now anyway).
I don’t oppose to the 3s reveal after a hit out of stealth though, although it can be annoying since every class now has got group stealth and stealthes me when I am about to use CnD – thanks….
On the other hand (= stealthless combat); the idea of staff/daredevil is nice but the execution lacks – I’m not too happy about the skills on staff – somehow it feels as if everything thief does is done better by revenant.
Reads forum, copies and pastes…
Yay – unfortunately I’m a complete noob when it comes to upgrades…
Thank you =)
The last wvw tournament was 1,5 years ago.
That’s nice but servers are a delicate thing.
Wvw is psychology to a huge part – you can’t just mash everything together and expect it to work.
And if you don’t even play wvw why do you think you can say what it needs?
I think that I’m starting to understand the devs more and more.
Yeah, you sure make as much sense as them.
According to the devs, most wvwer accounts participate in pve where they enjoy the benefits of megaserver…
Who said that wvw players are enjoying it and not enduring? I couldn’t find any source for it, and I personally hate megaserver even in pve.
Who said that these wvwers don’t enjoy pve? Who said anything about enjoying it or not? The point is… for whatever reason they are reaping the benefits of megaserver… That’s the main message…
I always stay on a map when it’s about to be closed – cause I don’t like the crowded megaservers.
I agree with Bubi: before you generalize – ask.
ETA: The only good things from the megaservers are being able to fill a map for a huge event (world bosses) and being able to play with people from other servers. But it was the nail in the coffin for my server which had a huge PvE and also WvW community (who were constantly fighting) – we were all sad when that broke apart.
(edited by Jana.6831)
I think the truth is inbetween.
Most people I knew on EU didn’t transfer to a higher PPT server. Or if they did they transfered to a lower ranked server soon after (that both NA and EU).
2 of the 3 servers I’ve been on (EU) had a community and a “character” – it’s hard to maintain that. But usually if not too many people transfer either to or away a community will build up. If done with an “alliance” system these guilds would have to get along with each other which can be tricky at times, so in the end the same guilds would form alliances over and over and we would basically have servers again.
Or did I get something wrong?
I do – PPT really matters to me but in an equal fight, kind of – don’t know if you know what I mean – usually if a server is better but has got no night cappers they will lose their stuff during the night but regain everything (PPT wise) during prime – but maybe that also had to do with bloodlust (warpoints per stomp) which is now gone.
So nightcappers didn’t mean too much in bronze/silver EU.
But honestly, if you want to know “how good” a server is look at the PPT during prime time. If they tick with <100 but win the whole week regardless they don’t really deserve that win in my opinion. But megaservers are no solution for that. EU will always have dead times – and we live with that.
ETA: We’re lucky that our tiers aren’t locked; it doesn’t matter that much what rank a server is.
(edited by Jana.6831)
Maybe it’s because I started out on NA – but I do care for PPT !!
Well, what should I say?! I love stuff and a lot of numbers.
But honestly: I don’t mind losing our towers/keeps every day but not defending is karma train for me – best fights are mostly around objectives (with me on siege – I’m completely unselfish with that!!).
And yeah, servers matter to me as long as they’ve got character.
ETA: I once swore that as long as I’m on a server they won’t be ticking with 0 – that was no good idea; to flip camps for 6 hours straight as the only person from that server online
But I did it – with 5 groups of 5 chasing me over all maps.
(edited by Jana.6831)
God, it took me 3 mins to get what the OP was about.
I think that throwing more people ( = Megaservers) at the problems won’t solve them but inevitably lead to the complete death of that game mode.
How about we go back and make smaller but skilled groups count?
For that the tools have to work = siege, structures. Also stability changes need to be partly reverted, condis need to be looked at, OP skills need to be removed.
That is a lot of work but it would make wvw fun again.
ETA: Coverage problems would partly solve themselves when the bigger group wouldn’t automatically win.
(edited by Jana.6831)
He was right. Just that I like D/D better.
And when I left that server we were 1,5 thieves left, both D/D.
My graphics are pretty low and I can hit stationary targets, perfectly.
As soon as the move just one bit I’ll miss.At this point I don’t know. We’ve ruled out a lot of things so maybe it’s ArenaNet’s turn to rule things out and find out what’s really going on.
That would be nice actually. Thanks for your help though =)
Give in to the pistol offhand!
Won’t happen.
Mapchat discussion on my first server:
Me: “I think D/D might actually be better than D/P”
X: “Are you crazy? D/P is OP!”
Me: “D/D is faster”
I was doing pretty well as a solo roamer with 200 ping actually.
(That was about 1,5 years ago)
My graphics are pretty low and I can hit stationary targets, perfectly.
As soon as the move just one bit I’ll miss.
Having played almost exclusively S/D, I haven’t ran into any problems.
I do tend to stow weapons as soon as I think I might miss… Might be worth trying? That isn’t the problem, the problem is that my CnD should hit but misses without notification – there’s no way that I can estimate whether or not it will hit because it should hit.
This usually happens to me when the game client and the server is out of sync, though I never experience this using CnD.
This happened to me while gliding where the game client shows me that I made the landing on a tree branch but the server disagree and I ended up being killed because according to the server, I missed the branch and fell off the cliff.
This could also be what’s happening to you where the game client shows you that your target is within range or that you actually hit them, but the server disagrees that you actually missed them by a mile only because they are out of sync.
You can try to run a repair to your client and see if that fixes the problem.
I did, multiple times, I tried everything, I guess. Also the video of me missing my buddy was recorded by him – we both saw the same.
Oh , man look at number of games that man played as thief and tell me how many other players can come close to his, or Sizers skill and knowledge of that class??
There was a time when s/d -SB thief was considered most op thing in this game,
why do you think no1 even tried to do that at that time?
We did, me and 4 fellow pretty pro thieves. Before June – didn’t work. Not enough condi cleanse.
If I were your opponents I would simply put 1 close, one far and 3 mid – that should solve the problem.
Having played almost exclusively S/D, I haven’t ran into any problems.

I approve of this.
mfw thieves go from being the most complained about decap class to being the worst class to play pvp period
mfw playing the class as it is is the best punishment for people who put the class there in the first place
if all they can do is be the class equivalent of cancer, lel enjoy
You’re right actually, I really should start to play pvp to show all those complainers what they have done – but in the end it was a higher power who should’ve told them to learn to play.
Nah, can’t tell everyone I’m a girl.
(“Yo, you’ve been beaten by a female D/D thief, LEARN TO PLAY!!”)This has no significance, do it anyway~
You must use the unicorn finisher. If not, at the very least minstrel if you are thief.
You must burn the lolz into their mind.
I can stomp 3 while the first one is still up
Nah, can’t tell everyone I’m a girl.
(“Yo, you’ve been beaten by a female D/D thief, LEARN TO PLAY!!”)
I too have had the luxury of beating and slow-stomping a revenant.
Nothing more satisfying.
Yeah, I so wish I had recorded that – with my trolly gemshop dragon finisher which stayed up at least a minute as it was slowed down as well.. just epic!
And: if you compare Shiro to thief you really wonder why everything rev has got on very low cooldown with very little effort came from thief who had it nerfed into oblivion. And even if that weren’t the case I still don’t get all the reveal skills – makes no sense at all.
I wish I could have a seven hit attack that was unevadable that granted me might on successful hit that was also a two second evade. At least the class would have sustain then.
Anet I’m bitter. I’ll level with you. Seeing thieves getting bullied while classes have access to skills like this is just plain making me bitter. I shouldnt have to go gear and level a specific class just to play competently.
If it makes you feel better; I survived such an attack yesterday and stomped that Rev in slo-mo (he slowed me while downed).
ETA: On the other hand I killed a Necro with my level 76 exotic zerker gear without a backpiece, half build (“I think I forgot to fill some lines”) S/S rev the day before.
(edited by Jana.6831)
Azure: Thief Dagger mainhand usually don’t run CiS, so the only blind comes from pistol offhand 4 and 5 – I’d be more vary of revenants when it comes to blinds (my revenant has got a blind build – who would’ve guessed?! – you know blind is so OP that thief has got it as a grandmaster – only when he manages to stealth, but oh well, let’s give it rev on auto attack).
Panda: I’m a wvw player and would love to be able to 1 vs 1 people properly again. It’s no fun to always run away. That might be good anough for PvP (though I bet it isn’t) but not for wvw.
And: if you compare Shiro to thief you really wonder why everything rev has got on very low cooldown with very little effort came from thief who had it nerfed into oblivion. And even if that weren’t the case I still don’t get all the reveal skills – makes no sense at all.
And I don’t know, thief is not in as bad a place as the community makes it out to be, especially with the introduction of Daredevil.
It is, otherwise the die hard thieves from esportz would still run it in tournament.
I wrote that I like the DrD line and the new skills – I really do but it feels as if what I need for my D/D to work is scattered across all lines = I can’t make a build and the best I could come up with was the vanillas trait lines – can’t live without trickery as no interrupt, steal CD too long, no trickster, withdraw cooldown too long, daggerstorm cooldown too long. Can’t live without SA because of SE.
I’m a rev noob and I had to take some traits I wasn’t too fond of (as for now) – but I felt as if I were able to make a build – I don’t have that feeling with thief.
Also I fought as a DrD thief against a DrD thief yesterday and the fight went endlessly and was only broken up because some of my allies came. I don’t think I like that all DrD has got is evades – if a class is mirrored and not able to kill each other, then something is off. Not saying that DrD is OP, but if the other classes are nerfed a bit, the evades will become a problem.
ETA: Problem is that our elite is evades.
