How to balance Condition damage

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Khisanth.2948

The problem with condi is just that over time it has become more and more like power to the point that we are in the current situation where it has already overtaken it. There is no point in having multiple damage types if you make them function the same.

As far as I am concerned conditions should have been about applying pressure and winning through attrition. Condition build would need to interrupt their opponents’ cleanse and burst. Power would need to ensure that they can land their bursts and cleanses. That gives them distinct play styles and different requirements for their tool set. Of course this only applies to WvW and PvP …

For PvE we would need better AI. We would need enemies that heal to make poison’s secondary effect relevant. We need less stationary enemies for torment to do its job. The closer the AI gets to players’ behavior the easier it becomes to balance the skills.

Instead we got some kind of arms race going on where condi applies more and more condi and condi removal skills remove more and more condis at once and we get condi and boons flipping back and forth. It seems we are rushing forward without looking back at all and asking “what was the purpose of these things originally?”

If for some reason you have a thing for seeing exotics drop then just play fractals but they will be account bound on acquire.

A few questions if you can help

1 – I unlocked gliding and shroom super jumping, is there a preferred order of other things I should work on or should I just wing it?

I just winged it but in general the last and most expensive in each line is probably the least useful.

Gliding – Getting this up to advanced gliding is good. You won’t miss much by not having ley line gliding

Itzel Lore – You will want to get up to Itzel Poison Lore otherwise some areas are not accessible.

Exalted Lore – Just getting Exalted Markings is fine

Nuhoch Lore – Get this up to Nuhoch Stealth Detection

2 – I have a few full exotic sets, zerker, carrion, knight/soldier, etc., so I’m doing okay, but how do I obtain ascended weapons? Do I need to craft them? I hoarded materials for years, everything is at the stash cap, meaning that I cannot store anything anymore. It shouldn’t be too terrible to get all materials, even if I’m very scarce in liquid wealth (gold), but if I can farm it I can make it I guess. Oh, I’m a Huntsman if that helps identifying what I have to do.

You have 2000 of everything?
Unfortunately an important aspect of ascended crafting is the time gated material so having a lot of things stored up less helpful than it could be. You can also bypass the gating by buying the finished item on the TP but that will cost you extra(usually).

You can also buy ascended gear using the raid currency or random drops but random drops are obviously not reliable.

Two of the cheaper options for ascended weapons is the various elite spec weapons and weapon you get through the Caladbolg quest. The first time through the that quest the weapon is very cheap but you do need to have a character that has finished the HoT story and this assumes you want a sword/greatsword/shield/scepter/dagger. Caladbolg’s weapon type is changeable as well for 1000 unbound magic.

3 – How can I grind some gold? Not looking forward to make thousands, but say a couple hundreds maybe? Which is the best way?

Silverwastes is pretty easy and basically guaranteed. Ideally you want a lv30 or 50ish character to do all the bag opening. Check the LFG. If it is advertised as RIBA it means they are running around in that order. Red fort -> Indigo -> Blue -> Amber.

4 – I heard someone say legendaries can be crafted now, is that true? I think it may be referring to precursors, but I’m not sure. If it’s possible, how can I work on one?

They have always been craftable. :P

The “new” thing is craftable precursors. This is not always the cheapest route. Sometimes the crafting cost can be as much as twice the cost of buying it.

5 – Is there an experienced thief that can give a few tips on open world or general pve builds? Eventually for raiding in the future as well. A link to some website is also equally welcome, I’ve been really out of this game for too long and I have to find my ground again.

2,000 gems is 578 gold to buy. The difference between a more expensive legendary and a cheaper one is over 800g so this would still be a decent saving and as pointed out since they can’t undo unlocks this would be a very steep discount for a second skin.

It’s similar to Flame Blast in animation and effect, which is why someone probably thought to link it. However, as Khisanth said, the description on the sigil is accurate; the notes at the bottom of the wiki even say that it never procs (" The flame blast cannot critically hit.")

It is similar to Flame Burst in animation. Flame Blast shoots out an orb/blob thing.

This topic drives me nuts. There’s some provable facts and the rest is all a matter of preference; there’s no “right” answer that applies to everyone. There are all sorts of other things that ANet could spend time on that would help out more of us more often.

The facts:

  • Downed and dead contribute to the scaling. It can be easily shown with (admittedly, improper) use of DPS meters.
  • The impact is substantial for mid-sized crowds; it’s less important for zergs, unless lots & lots of people are dead.
  • Rezzing the dead results in a double loss of DPS: the dead and anyone rezzing them.
  • No one loses credit for an event because they are running back from a WP (you have to be a little careful to collect loot, if the event ends before you return).

You might not lose credit but you will lose loot if you are too far away when the boss dies. That is only for whatever loot that drops from the bosses’ corpse. You still get stuff from the ground chests.

What kind of mob is this, that takes longer to kill than reviving a dead person? Maybe the one doing the reviving has some different (and more important) issues if it takes him longer to kill a mob than revive a person.

Way to turn my point into “L2P” lol. That wasn’t my point. If I’m running along and I see a dead person, I might stop to rez them. If after I start rezing a mob decides to attack me, I shouldn’t have to stop rezing and kill the mob so I can start rezing again.

With the WvW implementation you do not have to stop in that situation. You will continue ressing. If you decide to stop ressing and try to resume again then you would need to get out of combat first.

I don’t understand your response in regard to my quote.

The issue you raised doesn’t exist with the implementation of it in game. The mob attacking you would not cause you to stop ressing. You have to manually stop ressing or the mob has to use a CC for it to turn into the scenario you described.

Ignoring everything else about how improbable this is, Xbox would NEVER let players port characters from the original PC version, nor would they let players of different version interact at all. They’re kittens like that and they’ll likely not budge regardless of what Anet (in this hypothetical situation) says or wants.

Are you sure you got that right? Seems like Sony is the one doing that right now … (I mean getting in the way of cross platform play).

Many exotic trinkets are available in the trading post for under two gold. Level 400 jeweler crafting takes 30-35 gold and can craft trinkets for any stats.

The cost of level 400 jeweler is less than half of that.

The issue is RNG on the nodes. I actually had a day where I did EVERY node in Ember Bay and got 1 (one) petrified log. 1 log from harvesting every single stump in the zone is not just bad RNG but bad design (yes I run with the gathering guild boost).

That said, the grind isn’t bad. You can get an amulet and ring from Draconis-not painful. You can get a backpiece, ring, and accessory from Bitterfrost-stupidly easy. You can infuse the rings so getting 2 from one zone is doable (1 infused, 1 not-still unique items) The only reason to do any zone other than Draconis and Bitterfrost is for a second accessory and unbound magic.

Other than Draconis Mon and Bitterfrost, I never bothered with the maps’ nodes. I just did the boss events that dropped the currency and the hearts to exchange karma for them.

Bloodstone is not that bad either since they are all clustered together.

How about avoiding corpses at all and reviving people while they are downed?

1) I am sorry but we are not in the type of relationship that would make me want to walk through fire to save you.

2) OP is talking about dead not down.

Actually if you lay dead (not downed, but defeated), you are hurting the fight, because people may accidentally select you over a downed (not dying) ally that is still contributing to the fight. You also run the risk of people that don’t know any better that hard ressing takes longer, putting themselves in danger and getting themselves killed because they were being considerate! Yes, they can manually select, but you’re still making it hard for them. WP back.

I think it should be like in WvW where you can’t res dead people in combat (and should remove the option as well as that gets annoyed).

Disabling ressing dead while in combat would not help with the issue you raised of interfering since you can still interact with the dead. You just end up with a message telling you that you can’t res dead while in combat.

That is not the experience I have in this game, in Open World content as well as Fractals. It’s rather the opposite, people run to resurrect downed players even if just killing the mob that downed player is hitting from the downed state only needs one more shot to allow rallying. I often think “omg, that is so nice, but it would really help me more if you just killed that trash mob I’m throwing daggers at.”

And people also drop everything and run to resurrect dead people, which makes no sense most of the time.

There is also the opposite … you kill half a dozen mobs around someone and they did not rally because they didn’t hit any of the mobs.

And if you don’t have a nearby waypoint and won’t get back in time? Then should you port? Maybe you used teleport to a friend to get into the fight and don’t have any waypoints in the area at all.

It’s happened to me.

Maybe they shouldn’t be making the WPs so sparse.

Especially since there seems to be an obligatory ty/yw at the end when the best strategy is both backing off a bit (or even further for a full heal), hitting their heal skills, then returning to the fight a few seconds later.

That is so hateful. If you really want to thank me then GTFO the AoE instead … oh look you are downed again.

Just NOT like they did in the HOT zones, where if you do not tag an event in a certain time period you time out. Obviously someone forgot some dynamic events do not scale well so it is hard to get in many hits. Not to mention that when several events are near each other you can wind up participating in one you did not mean to be in and losing the work you put in on the first.

I think you still get the item rewards in those cases. You just lose out on the karma and exp and possibly collection item.

In a way this whole thread is a L2P issue. People ressing at inappropriate times as well as people expecting to be ressed at inappropriate times. There has been way too many people asking to be ressed while in the middle of Matriarch/Patriarch’s fire or Golem Mk II’s electric field.

It would be nice to see something definitive on the scaling issue, though, with the conflicting accounts in this thread. Knowing that for sure would definitely affect my decisions on rezzing both self and others.

In the case of the Patriarch’s shield it only seems to scale up. It never scales back down. I can be fighting there alone then someone shows up and the shield will be scaled up. Even if I never see anyone else again for the next 15+ minutes the shield stays scaled up.

My stance on this is not too popular, but here it is anyhow:

Waypointing out of combat should be disallowed (like in dungeons or fractals). Also, dead characters SHOULD count towards scaling (they do not now).

My reasoning is that this is a cooperative game. Players should be reviving defeated players on the “don’t leave a fellow soldier behind” principle. My stance would force players to revive their fallen comrades. However, it may also require some changes to the overall scaling formulas in use.

Nope. Still won’t ress some people. For example people who would drag a mob out of its leash range and cause it to reset and anyone else who doesn’t know how to kite properly. Those people are more useful dead than alive.

Interesting, I guess I have very bad luck then. I don’t understand why they are so difficult though. Not like they give great rewards or anything. Bad thing is that people on low level maps like Snowden try to do them and they take so long that they are very discouraging.

They are difficult for the same reason many other things are “difficult”. Too many people participating don’t know what to do. The number of golems ramp up as the event progress as well as scaling up with the number of people around. You need to get rid of any golemancer that shows up since they buff the golems which causes the golems to block attacks. The blocks will make it much more difficult to kill the golems fast enough.

The other stupid thing about these events(only found out about this yesterday) is that if you focus too much on helping it succeed you can end up not getting credit for the other achievements which are for helping the event succeed. This means too many people trying to succeed can also lead to failure. -_-

Scaling drawback

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Khisanth.2948

Khisanth.2948

That is an unfortunate side effect of the scaling not really pulling higher levels down to map level, thanks to their better gear and full array of skills and traits, combined with the occasional “do 4 events in this starter map” daily.

You are most likely seeing that when level 80’s have a do-four-events daily; otherwise they don’t have much incentive to speed-roll the low level events.

I don’t think downscaling is the problem, so much that event scaling only seems to take into account how many people there are, and not their levels. If event scaling in core tyria maps could be changed to scale based off of the combined level of the players, this should be a non issue. That way, 4 level 40 characters would have the same event scaling as 2 level 80s, and the difficulty should be better balanced for a wider range in group sizes, regardless of whether its level 80 characters or not.

Maybe they can apply the ridiculous HoT scaling. “Oh hey looks like there are two people around! Lets spawn some lv83 elites.”

Finishers were added in PvE during LS1 against the toxic alliance. It was just another way to make more money off the gem store. It didn’t really add anything but annoyance that you now have to stomp some enemies when you used to kill them outright when their HP reached zero.

The overall idea of “cosmetic upgrade item” has a lot of long-term potential, however.

Especially with gem store items frequently surpassing legendaries in splendor, maybe upgrade items are the way to go here.

For example:

  • A sigil which when applied to a weapon gives the liquid sheen look of the Juggernaut.
  • A set of runes which, when applied to armor, make it fold away into town clothes when out of combat (also opens up another inventory slot to equip town clothes in).
  • A sigil applied to a ranged weapon which turns the projectiles into plasma like HOPE does.

Bringing utility and cosmetics into conflict is a terrible idea.

As for myself, I boosted a Necro MM to provide meat shields for ourselves. I think the problem with this is that we both feel like I’m just playing by myself and she is just along for the ride. When she does get focused on, I also can’t seem to do much to help her, other than just killing the mobs as quickly as I can.

In that sort of situation a Dragonhunter would be a lot more useful than a minion necro. A DH would be able to heal, block and have plenty of options for CC to deal with the enemy. Chronomancer would also be good but might be more difficult to play.
