When we get issues like this on the Mac, we just delete the contents of our gw2 folder (the folder that contains our config file and such). It typically fixes graphics issue like these… Since we don’t have drivers updates constantly.
Okay, I know it’s not all black screen, but what about this?
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Black-Screen-Issue-AMD-ATI/first#post38195
I wonder why it’s not set up like the pumpkins were.
The system is down for maintenance, shoud be back soon though! Just wait it out.
Some people have said the downloader had run overnight and didn’t start/finish until several hours after that (despite the fact that the devs say 10-20 minutes for the alternate download system).
You can always try and run the repair and see how far you get with that. I’ll post all the repair instructions for you if you want to try.
Read the 2nd step completely.
1.) try repairing disk permissions via Disk Utility first. Then…
2.) repair the client install
Open Terminal
Type the following:
/applications/guild\ wars\ 2.app/contents/MacOS/cider —use-dos-cwd C:Gw2 -- C:\\GW2\\GW2.exe -repair
You can copy and paste that in, but (check the dash) you must change the dash before the word USE or this will fail the forum shows an em dash (—), but it is supposed to be 2 consecutive en dashes (-). Run it and let it go until finished. FYI if you type the command yourself or paste it, they are 2 dashes (-) side by side… I’m noticing one sometimes looks like an em dash… It’s 2 en dashes though. (the dash before USE is 2 regular dashes)… Reiterated due to previous confusion about that dash on these forums.
Please let me know if this works, if not…you could always try running the game (without the repair) with the sudo command. Or try using an alternate dns.
Please reply whether any of this worked or not.
Hi Emrenass, please post your system specs for follow up, but in the meantime, I’ll post basic steps to try, but there might be something this doesn’t address. I can’t guarantee this will help, but I’m going to post our standard Mac troubleshooting steps. For you, I think you’ll benefit most from steps 1, 4, & 5. (1 is a given, but just in case). If the problem is still occurring afterwards, I do absolutely recommend you check your temperatures for your CPU & GPU and post your temps while the computer is idle, then post the temps after the system has been running the game for 10-15. You may need to open your system and clean your vents & fans and such. If this doesn’t work, I highly recommend a ticket. Please follow up with a post telling us what actually worked too.
Here it goes (it’s long):
1.) run software update to ensure all drivers and os are up to date.
2.) try repairing disk permissions via Disk Utility first. Then…
3.) repair the client install
4.)Perhaps after doing that, if it doesn’t work, you can try to delete the contents of the gw2 data folder, it’s a pain to get to the right one: this step is a general fix for many tp issues, even without the previous steps
Mine is located under the hidden Library folder (navigate using finder, do not use spotlight to search)
/[yourharddrivename]/users/[yourusername]/library/application support/guild wars 2
You may want to copy/paste this folder to your desktop as a temporary back up, just in case.
Delete the contents of that specific folder (you should see files like this contained within “config, dyndata.dat, user.reg, userdef.reg, and folders p_drive and wineserver…namestuff…loca..[long name]” just to list a few), then re-run the client..
~~Your folder is probably hidden (as is the default). Hidden folders display as greyed out text and icons. I found this after googling:
http://m.wikihow.com/See-Hidden-Folders-on-Mac-OS-X-and-Other-Recent-Models
Others claim alt+clicking a file/folder unhides the contents, but that was never successful for me. At least the link has visuals for you. Hope it helps.
5.) check support.mac.com for instructions on how to reset your pram and smc.
6.) If none of this works, check the sticky and submit a ticket, then please come back here and report the fix that worked for you.
My Mac never really goes above 78C (for GPU), the CPU gets to around 82C during extreme load, but never really stays that high.
If you are concerned, you can try a cooling pad (make sure it has more than 1 high powered fan, this way you can dissipate some of the heat that builds underneath. That helps keep my temps down nicely (below 80 for CPU). But since the MacBook vents at the very back, it’s not really going to do a whole lot. Just keeps the bottom enclosure from getting hotter which keeps more heat close to your important bits.
I used to run in bootcamp (win7 64bit), but I had more heat troubles. During the 1st beta weekend, my system got so hot, it shut down and refused to boot for 30 mins lol…oops! And the requirements are higher on osx because the game is run by a cider wrapper rather than a native client. This is also one reason the graphics are prettier in windows (direct x). If you notice, you can use high resolution character textures and a couple other settings can go higher in windows.
I’m content on my osx not worrying about crappy windows and possible viruses lol. But, to each their own!
(I know windows isn’t like a herpes factory, but I’ve had too many bad experiences with windows)
4gb is min requirements for Mac though. I can attest that upgrading to 8gb has bettered my performance (MBP late 2011). Not a huge amount, but I don’t get intermittent fps/performance dips anymore. (the game would actually stutter so bad due to “not enough memory” if I played for more than 1 hour I had to purge my memory to continue or it would lag out to unplayable at all)
It’s not perfect, but not everyone wants to spend money on windows just to partition their hard drive for bootcamp (that jacks a $60 game’s price way up). They bought this game for Mac! That’s why they’re on this forum in the first place. O.o
People using the teleport hack are the worst! Ruining it for me!
Okay, this is pretty bad! Hackers using the teleport hack have screwed me over 3 times in about 15 minutes now. As I’m running up and hitting F before I see anyone else running over, some bumhat just pops in and claims it before I can and it disappears before I get credit or candy very sad!
Have you tried French? Also, as mentioned previously, waiting is the devs advice; that takes 10-20 mins to kick in. (some have said theirs took overnight plus a few hours of waiting)
If it still doesn’t start up again, file a ticket.
I can confirm that if you interact with a piñata at the same time as another player, it will disappear and you don’t get it or anything from it.
Temp fix: best to wait if you see someone else run up at the same time as you.
What happens when you try to open the client?
Good points! However, that was exactly why we were trying to get attention back to this forum. We’re looking for answers!
Fine, call it beta and never advance the project (but please fix bugs that were introduced along with new features lol), but be honest about that on the “support” page and don’t point people here stating that this IS the support page. Or, give us the support paying customers deserve and continue to advance this project by creating a Mac support team (2-5 peeps who know exactly what they’re doing is immense) who can officially work on and address bugs/issues Mac users experience and work on getting our client out of beta or start on the path of a native client (much more people resource intensive).
Coming clean with info isn’t that much to ask.
I was going to post about this last night, but I didn’t get on here to do so. So now I can just post 2 in one lol.
I’ve briefly run around a couple areas and the fps isn’t consistent across the board, but I am still seeing marked improvement over past performance. I’m averaging between 25-50 fps depending on location. And places like Sparkfly Fen still jump/drag a little. I haven’t tried any large scale events though.
Sylar, I took a screen for you of my settings. The resolution is 1440 × 900 (I cut it off so you could see the rest). They aren’t the best settings in the world, but I think it’s a nice balance. I have post-processing on high currently, but I do turn that down to low on occasion depending on what I’m doing. (fyi, I can turn some settings up a bit, but I don’t mind how this looks. I also on occasion will turn environment up to see footprints in the snow and play with shaders for fun, but these settings aren’t bad at all)
I had another suggestion for you to possibly improve your performance; you could always try an smc reset. Go to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964. Then follow the steps for your system. Hope this helps you
(edited by Kyllaa.1385)
Please post your system specs.
(btw, did you try anything listed above?)
(edited by Kyllaa.1385)
Log files are one of the most useful tools in troubleshooting.
This looks like a drivers issues. Try uninstalling your vid card drivers and re-installing the newest ones. It may help. Post back either way to let us know.
Also, post your complete system specs.
Should they try to make a report about crashing in a zone on a particular server (their home server obviously) if that fixes the issue for them?
I had an issue similar to this when using “F” to interact with something. I kept looping the action (squating and standing) and the yellow bar kept starting and filling until I was able to finally move and break the cycle. (lol it looked like my Asura was waggling her bum at me)
I have made zero changes to settings and zero system upgrades.
Oh I’m sure this won’t be consistent across the board, but asi said, I haven’t had much time to play lately and it was a shocking change to see compared to my last extended play session where I experienced very choppy graphics combined with moderate skill input lag.
(graphics improvements in particular were insanely obvious is my point) I’m just hoping it continues to only get better
Sylar, if you are looking to try and improve performance, you can try step 4 of the troubleshooting steps I’ve posted on other threads for people experiencing issues. In short, it clears all old settings and allows you to start fresh and hopefully take advantage of these “optimisations” [warning, it will clear your login/password and all in-game settings you have saved] not a guarantee, just a suggestion if you’re interested in trying.
Make sure any anti-virus and firewall software is temporarily disabled (you can add exceptions later if need be). This also includes anything on your router/modem (they are sometimes enabled by default, especially on public connections).
You can try running msconfig and disabling your startup programs, then restart and try again. You can re-enable afterwards. If removing all of them works, make sure to test the game without them running and then enable 1 at a time (restarting in between each) and testing to make sure you do not run into the same problem again.
If nothing works, check the submit a ticket sticky and have a go there. Then please come back and post whatever fixed worked for you in case others experience this as well. (meh, post your fix regardless lol)
Are you actually running an overclocked system? It seems that causes more problems than it helps at all.
For gw2, it is best to make sure all windows updates are fully installed (even the insignificant seeming ones), be certain your vid card drivers are completely up to date (you may need to uninstall and re-install the newest ones), and run you system without any overclocking.
You might want to check your crash logs, including your Anet crash log for any errors or notices that occur around the time of your crashes. This sometimes helps pinpoint what “broke” causing the crash in the first place allowing you to figure out how to fix it.
I think I read somewhere that there may be an asus app that runs in the background that fixes issues when disabled, this may or may not be an issue for you.
If nothing you do helps this issue, I highly recommend a support ticket. Check the sticky on what they will need exactly to help you. Please post back if anything works to possibly help others who may experience this issue too (even if that solution comes from a ticket).
Make sure to pop over to the Mac forums if you have issues with the client. We don’t have much support there, but there are a few critical troubleshooting steps that work for most problems posted there… After that, it’s up to submitting a ticket for you ;p
I thought this game used a 2d render (like a sketch) for very distant items depending on LOD distance settings?
I keep mine on medium and I don’t have any major issues really (running an MBP late 2011, upgraded 8gb of ram, Mac beta client) and we don’t get near the quality or performance pc gets. The pc client requires half the minimum system reqs that the Mac does.
I would suggest making sure you’ve run and installed ALL of the windows software updates, especially service packs and drivers. Run a repair of gw2 by adding the -repair tag to your shortcut. And double check your internal hardware to make sure it’s all seated well and cables are plugged in fully.
Just a couple things I could think of off of the top of my head that are easily implemented and tested.
(the only reason I don’t think the bsod crash is exclusively programming is because not everyone is experiencing this error constantly or more frequently than usual, but maybe Anet implements different builds randomly to test them out – odd thought)
I just wanted to report in on something I noticed recently. While running around in pve, I was getting around ~60fps! For my system (MBP late 2011, upgraded to 8gb ram on mostly medium settings), that is a lot! Normally, I cap ~30-34,. However, while playing lately (last week or so), I noticed how smooth moving around looked and couldn’t help but think “it looks so smooth, like it’s better than 30fps” and low and behold I checked and there it was 62fps. Of course, this was a low population time in a pve zone (slightly southwest of lowland burns waypoint near the vista). But typically my video stutters and frame dips a lot while running around and fighting, but it just looked so nice, it reminded me of my hubs MBPr. Haven’t had time recently to test WvW though.
I noticed it in kessex hills the other day also, but didn’t check before I had to log. Was too busy focusing on my phantasms watching their attacks and stalls lol. ;p
Anyway, I just wanted to call out something positive. I’m not sure if those optimisations are truly affecting us, but I had a pretty play recently! Crossing my fingers that this isn’t just a fluke lol.
(haven’t been playing during prime times to test out the skill input lag, but hoping to test this and the fps more this week)
Absolutely! I’m hoping Ashley keeps moonlighting on our forum so (with any luck) she can report them to the powers that be and maybe get a fix out there for us some day.
I honestly coud say that in the last week or so I have seen fps improvement in pve. I have an MBP late 2011 running the Mac beta on roughly medium settings (1-2 high) and normally I get around 30 fps that dips as low as 10 in LA and down to 14 in low populated pve zones while turning fast. And over the last week, I can get up to ~60fps in low populated pve zones that dips to about 23 turning fast. In LA I only dipped to around 15 or so.
I only see this kind of performance and smoothness on my hubs MBPr or his pc on high settings typically. So I have so say, I noticed immediately how smooth it looked while running around.
I haven’t been partaking in WvW recently, so I can’t comment on that, but the amount of time I have gotten to pve has really had improvement for me. I haven’t played enough during prime times to test the skill input lag, but hoping to test that out this week.
(I just wanted to provide a counter to all the unfortunate experiences the rest of you are having, it’s not bad for everyone and hopefully an optimisation will work for you too soon)
You can also report them in-game, but nearly a year later, many are still there from launch… So no matter where you post, it may not be addressed anytime soon (unless they plan a special patch at the 1 year anniversary of launch to fix all typos that have been reported)
I know I’ve reported many typos, some multiple times, and they are still there (months after reporting the first time). I’m hesitant to even bother sometimes.
Doesn’t your processor have a quad core? 25% out of a grand total of 400% isn’t too bad, but I agree, it really shouldn’t be using that much on the login screen.
I know during game play, my MBP late 2011 runs around 200% and spikes my men usage up to about 2gb or more at times. I typically run with all other programs closed (other than a few finder windows and activity monitor), but that is only out of hakittenrome used to drag me down significantly, especially after being open for a long time or with many tabs open. When I ran with 4gb that would max out my system leaving me with about 10mb… Yes MB, of free memory, I’d have about nearly 2gb of inactive (blue on pie chart, my system never relinquished it oddly) and 2 gb active used and my game would lag and frame rate spike like nobody’s business, forcing me to purge after every 1-2 hours of game play.
If I’m to understand correctly, the cider port isn’t really optimised to maximise the use of multiple cores just yet, but it is beta, so odd memory and CPU usage is understandable, but inconvenient. Maybe it will run better someday, if they ever develop a native client.
I’d love to hear a devs take on why our loading screen starts the system resource hogging before we’re even in game.
Btw, c0000005 error is not a bsod crash, just a regular old gw2 crash that tends to occur when gw2 is trying to complete an action, but can’t. I haven’t actually seen the devs acknowledge what exactly that error code means, but it is not a bsod crash. I had that crash after march 26th, the culling update, and only got it in WvW until they released a patch for it about 1week later. You may be experiencing a faulty hard drive or an odd windows bug… It is a fairly unstable os, if you even sneeze at your computer wrong, you can fudge up the windows registry. Typical culprit is bad dll files.
Anyway, gw2 causes its fair share of crashes if the stars aren’t aligned perfectly sometimes, but not bsod crashes. Personally, I run gw2 on 3 systems (pc and Mac), and know about 10 others who play with zero issues, so I think those with these crashes, though it seems numerous really aren’t the majority of players. Are you possibly over clocking or something?
(correcting silly typos)
(edited by Kyllaa.1385)
I’m with abomally on the “upgrade” install. I can confirm that upgrade installs over an intact os cause more issues than freshly formatted installs.
You confirmed that you didn’t have any issues prior to that and even after uninstalling you’re still experiencing these issues. Also, make sure all of your hardware is seated properly, sometimes when upgrading one piece another one gets bumped and doesn’t make good contact and can causes random crashes.
Gw2 is a very intensive game, you almost can’t compare it to any other game fairly.
As for temps, what temp does you GPU get to after playing for 10-15 minutes? You may also want to run a diagnostic on your system to actually test for faulty hardware (or memtest or something).
Kaleste, do you happen to have any info from your latest crash log?
You’re running a 32bit version of windows it seems. That coud be part of the problem, also you’re running at just min specs. Have you run all of the windows update software and installed all updates? Also, have you confirmed you have the latest vid card drivers? I can’t tell what vid card you have from here though.
Post your system specs (make sure to include vid card and os specs)…. Duh, I just saw the vid card for the first person. But post them collectively still please, just in case someone else reads this and picks up on something.
(edited by Kyllaa.1385)
So you have 8gb of ram then? Which type of Mac is this? (MBP, MBA, etc) Have you run all of your mac software updates?
However, just looking at the base specs, you should be okay, you’re above the min requirements. Either way, I’ll post our basic Mac fixes, you could probably skip 1-3 (if 1 is already up to date), start with 4 and go through from there. Read each step completely before trying it. If 4 and 5 don’t work, start from 1 and try again. Please let us know how you go and if anything works.
1.) run software update to ensure all drivers and os are up to date.
2.) try repairing disk permissions via Disk Utility first. Then…
3.) repair the client install

Click the apple in the top left corner, click “about this Mac”, then click “more info”
Those are your system specs. Although you mentioned a MacBook air, I’m worried you may not the specs to run this game. Have you run it before on this system?
Either way, please post your specs and we’ll see.
Typically, the game shows you that it starts from zero, but usually, it picks right up from where it left off after scanning the data it already downloaded… You just don’t get to see that part of the download progress.
But keep an eye on it and see how it goes this time. Come back if you have any other issues.
Oh really! Now I want to test this! Seems like they might know about this then if it actually jails you for it. That’s hilarious!!!
What are the specs of the system that this is occurring on? We may be able to help you, but we need to know what system we’re working with.
Please post your system specs (including os and vid card) so someone may be able to help you. A screen shot helps too if you can get one.
There may be a fix for this, but we should know what we’re working with.
Foxx is right about the resolution, unfortunately, it works with one or the other, both requires extra effort as you’ve seen. You probably should just use full screen mode and tab between apps. Command + tab will even take you to the desktop (finder technically) if nothing else is running.
Sorry there is no actually solution to get what you need.
Try this. Or you could try and wait it out as recommended by the devs.
This still seems to be relevant for some.
I’ve had issues trying to Rex someone who is on an elevated area or defeated on uneven terrain. You turn to face them, kneel, but then stand right up without healing them at all. I’ve noticed this many times over the last 4 months at least. I haven’t played as much the last couple weeks to confirm it still happening, but I did have it occur briefly a month ago. My partner fell down a cliff and I had to circle around him carefully to find a good location to get the rez off (lol we were heading to a new waypoint so it would’ve been a long walk back).
It’s not always consistent though and sometimes unpredictable where you can and can’t rez, the only thing I’ve noticed consistently is uneven terrain.
Lol can you get to the bottom of Rata Sum doing this? ;p
Wonder if this would help.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Black-Screen-Issue-AMD-ATI
Saw these around, thought they might help. (if they don’t, search around, I remember reading a ton of threads with similarish issues fixed with similar solutions)
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Artifacts-Loading-Screen-In-game/first#post1725705
Follow up and post if either of these worked for you.
Or you may need to make sure all windows updates are current and installed or uninstall then reinstall the latest vid card drivers.
