With the pvp reqs for monthlies, I’ve never completed one. Oh well I guess….

Uh what? Since when we must do pvp/wvw to finish monthly?

There used to always be a ‘get x kills in wvw’ req in the monthlies. Although, perhaps not now since they changed them a bit. I’ve stopped paying attention to them, since WvW wasn’t really my thing.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

‘Release it again’? As long as you get the meta achievement (crstyal node) and get the recipes (which you can collect and throw in your bank until you can use them), you can craft it as you produce the materials. It isn’t going away….

I used to do dailies before they changed them. Then I started playing less around November. At this point, I rarely if ever completely my dailies, simply due to not having enough time when I can play in the evenings. While I do look at them, and I do get 2, maybe 3 of them done with my ‘normal’ play, I’d have to stop what I’m doing and specifically got out of my way to get the other 2 90+% of the time. With the pvp reqs for monthlies, I’ve never completed one. Oh well I guess….

I’m sure he didn’t mean that they’re literally all working on mini-game content. But since we all know that development takes time, why not devote more resources to core game development? Why go for a crazy two week release schedule, which takes even more manpower to realize, when the core game – an RPG – is lacking so far behind.
No one is screaming gimme gimme, we’re rather asking for less but well thought out content. I can’t recall anyone asking for the current release schedule. I love jumping puzzles and some mini games are entertaining but please make Guild Wars the highest priority. We’re just not seeing enough quality content in that department.

First, that is not how it is implied. Whether he intended it to come across as such or not. I do not see how letting a team opt to make a minigam (which people are clamoring for, and since the announcement of dragon bash some even asked for specifically) is taking away from resources ‘for the rest of the world.’ This is part of the living story, and was probably done by the team that did the story. Perhaps they needed a little help from outside developers, but from the way its sounds on how they pass things back and forth, I don’t think so.

There is nothing saying they arent devoting resources to the core game. Perhaps they have a lot of people on it, and adding more would be cumbersome/not helpful. Development teams can only be so big before the additional team members are more hindrance than help.

No one in this thread is screaming gimme gimme, but have you read the rest of the forum threads? The demands and self entitlement are rampant on here.

Colin has stated that the core game IS their priority. Check the recent news and even forum posts from him. However, they can work on the core game while still doing the living story, the mini games, etc. That is a beautiful thing about teams, about agile type development in general. I think the biggest issue is that we just aren’t seeing it, and lack of patience makes us feel like they aren’t doing anything, when that isnt the case at all.

Edit: @Harbard.5738 I wasn’t calling anyone specifically a locust in my post. I was simply stating that there are those types of people (that just consume the content as fast as possible) that just always demand more here on the forums. There is no way to keep up with people like that. It’s just not possible for any development team to provide content ‘on demand’ like that. Even living story gets decent development cycle time long before it’s getting pushed to us, and Colin has stated that with 4 teams, they will get even more time now.

I play with my teenage daughter, she’s setup with a PC and her own account. I think it’s perfect for her and she really likes it. I’m glad it’s not all blood and gore. My problems are the low lifes who find out she’s actually a female player playing a female character.

Yeah I know what you mean, and I can say I feel her pain. I can’t offer her any advice because I’m sure she’s not as…well, cruel and vicious as I am. People tend to leave me alone when I shoot back a sadistic and disturbing response such as how much fun it would be to dismember them with a spork. Simply telling them I’m married and not on the market just never works oddly enough; I have to resort to painting vivid mental pictures of maiming them at the very least.

Polish and skill tweaks are exactly that. Polish and tweaks. You can’t expect us to be content with such “advancements” while major issues remain unresolved for months. The zone that was introduced is visually appealing but so far it’s pretty much a wrapper for a jp and a mini game. What the rest of the devs are up to I don’t know but judging from the SOTG it hasn’t been much.

The point still stands that is non-minigame work. His argument is that they are devoting all their resources to minigames, when that is in fact not the case. Colin has stated that they have 4 living story teams, as well as additional larger teams for larger development projects. He has stated that things like LFG, loot overhaul, and even dungeons overhauls are coming. Heck, the loot overhaul was mentioned previously to be slated for end of summer release. HOW is that devoting ‘all their resources’ to mini games? Just because you don’t see it ‘right now’ doesn’t mean they aren’t working on anything else.

I really have to chuckle when people throw out there the ‘well anet must not care about their game, considering the state its in’ comments. Development takes time. Balancing, debugging, polishing takes time. In addition to all this, the locusts are screaming GIMME GIMME GIMME OR IM LEAVING! SO they have to address that at the same time. Patience is a virtue that the majority of people around here obviously don’t have.

“They’re taking the spotlight "

Have you seen the recent clamor on here begging, shouting, screaming, and downright demanding more mini games?

“They are taking resources that could go into the ACTUAL game. And that’s a fact either you like minigames or not. While mini games crop up left and right, the rest of the game is mostly neglected, especially the open world.”

Really now, its a fact? Did you look at the skill tweaks (even if its just text tweaks, its still non-minigame work). How about the polish? How about the whole rest of the kitten zone introduced for this living story update? You know for a fact that all 4 living world teams, AND the other ‘larger content development’ teams devoted all their time to just this minigame, therefore taking away from their work on other content?

“They’re usually not fun.”

For you. Many, MANY others find them great, and have screamed for them. Personally, I enjoyed dragon ball, and I know the people that loved GW1 rollerbeetle tend to really like sprint.

“Even if they were polished and fun, this is not the game I paid for. I want a “different MMO” not a a lame attempt at other simple gaming genres”

We don’t always get what we ‘expect’ when we buy a game. I’ve made many game purchases where I thought I’d like it, but it turned out that I didn’t and simply set it aside. Its a risk you take with well…pretty much every purchase in life. Anet has said that they have a plan/map for GW2 and that they are going to follow it. I guess you can either accept that, or look for something more to your taste. Perhaps that’s callous, but that’s life. You aren’t the developer, you either accept it or move on.

PvE'ers: What would it take...

People normally post it in the chat every now and then, especially when people aren’t following the commander. You will be around quite a few hardcore WvW’ers though so you will have to (gasp) make the effort to ask if there’s a teamspeak channel.

We don’t have time to whisper individual people to see if they’re following commanders, especially for high tier WvW towers and camps are constantly being assaulted. Plus if we post the teamspeak details in the chat and people still don’t join it… then they either can’t read or they’re purposely choosing not to for whatever their reasons may be (Mungrul brings up a few above).

Yeah been here, tried this. I’ve tried asking how I could help, where do you need me etc when joining wvw. More often than not, I get ignored. No mention of a VoiP option (I’m all for ingame voip, gimme anet, gimme), no ‘hey we could use you here’, nothing. Kitten, most wvwers ive met dont even bother to take the time to rez their allies after WINNING the battle, and the waypoint is miles away. Maybe it’s just my server, but stuff like that tends to leave a bad taste in my mouth, and I’m sure others as well.

I really try not to judge the whole batch based on the rotten few, but when more and more of the interactions I have end up being with the ‘rotten few’ it tends to imply that the whole batch is bad.

I’m not thrilled about the JP in WvW. I went to try it for Aetherblade, but couldn’t even access it because my server didn’t hold a keep with a gate. As such, I probably won’t manage it for this event either.

Honestly, I feel PvP and PvE should be completely separate, however with WvW this isn’t completely possible as it is in a sense a bridge between the two.

PvE'ers: What would it take...

No, WvW players are sick of PvE people doing the following:

1. Taking up spaces that actual players could be using

Oh look, precisely the point I made earlier about attitudes….. Thank you so much for reinforcing why so many avoid anything pvp based.

Because you know, us PvEers are just ‘taking up space’ because we aren’t ‘actual players’ and therefore must not really be doing anything.

We’re trying to fight against two other servers, and some players are just aimlessly tagging along with the zerg, not even communicating or listening to commanders, don’t you think WvW players have a right to be annoyed, especially if they’re second or last in the match up?

To give you a PvE example, it’s like with the Shatterer where a billion people afk at the waypoint and like one person does the pre events. In both cases, you just have a bunch of leeches who you don’t want there.

I do understand the issue with leeches, and no I don’t like them myself. However, in a lot of cases, (probably most) those ‘pve leeches’ in wvw just don’t know what to do.

Heck, I didnt know that each server even HAD a teamspeak, where the heck do I find that? Where is this information kept? Is it pointed out to me when I join? Is it regularly shouted in map chat? (Last time I was in WvW, no such thing was mentioned).

Are they standind around doing nothing, or are they trying to fight? Are they in your commanders squad? Have you tried whispering them to see if maybe they could use a little direction? In many cases the answer is no to almost all those questions.

PvPers are not the most helpful bunch of people, and asking a question in map chat…..holy crap. Ive seen people get less kitten in pve map chat for sheer stupidity.

New achievement interface: I don't like it

Honestly, I could go with either interface. Both have their perks and drawbacks. I like how the watch/track feature is implemented in the new one over just the check boxes in the old one for example. I like the increased number of watchables as well.

I don’t find it confusing, or any more complicated than the old one. The new one does give some room for additional sub categories of achievements though, allowing for some future expansion options.

The only thing would like (and I may have missed it) is a search option within it.

The Mehnlo/Cynn interaction?
How about the Gwen/Keiran interaction and subsequent wedding?

Classic soap opera, disney happy endings.

Ever listened to some of the heroes/hench when they talk? (Why hello Tahlkora!) Oh yeah, disney corniness. “That was the best fight ever!” – this line should never, ever come out of a MALE elementalist’s mouth…and yet its a common Sousuke line.

Begging for Mesmer Portals in JP's

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: LanfearShadowflame.3189

LanfearShadowflame.3189

Oh so not true. Human nature is to do it the easiest, fastest way possible that requires the least amount of effort. Proof – gold buying, title running, speed clears, etc. Gods this was rampant near the end of GW1 (Ruins or Morah runs, Dungeon book runs, mission book rus, etc etc), I can only imagine the short cuts that exist in other games.

In a way, you’re proving my point now and it still is pretty messed up that a person would rather QQ for the majority of an hour for what I listed rather than moving on.

I’d prefer seeing portals getting fixed or changed so they keep their functionality and mesmers lose nothing but they no longer have a part in JP and such.

The intent was to prove the point that human nature is not in line with your assessment that ‘true completionists’ won’t resort to cheating, which yes supports the general consensus that humans are by their very nature lazy and willing to take short cuts. A ‘true completionist’ will simply complete it by any means necessary in order to have it, which includes cheating to save time and effort. (Oh, I am so guilty of this)

However, considering Anets stance on things like runs, and [some] shortcuts, I don’t foresee them taking issue with the use of the portal in this way.

Of course, by removing the portal ability in JP, you’re in a sense telling a mesmer that ‘x’ skill in their arsenal is no longer valid. Heck, if my mesmer was portal capable, I’d be setting those things left, right and center, in case I fell so I could quickly return to that point, and anyone that wanted to hitch a ride could.

Yes, asking the mesmer to run it for you is different, but this is the same as having someone run a dungeon (600/smite anyone?), or doing a forge or spider run, or running a mission, etc etc for you. I could go on and on. People do it. Its how some people make good money. (Hm lightbulb….) Once upon a time, like you, I took issue with it, not anymore. If they don’t want to ‘play the game’ so to speak, they want someone else to do it for them, well that’s their prerogative. Just add them to the ignore list.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

How is this any different than say Droks runs, Desert Tours, etc from GW1? Simply put, there is no difference.

There will always be those that seek the path of least resistance. Some do it because they are lazy, others may legitimately not be able to do it on their own. Lag is a killer when trying to do JPs for example, and not everyone has spectacular connections and everyone being in the new zone does create a lot of lag for a lot of people.

So before you go pointing the finger and whining about other people ‘being bad players,’ keep in mind that you don’t know what their circumstances are.

As absolutely terrible as I am at jumping (really, I’m a riot to watch.) I haven’t needed a mesmer to get any of the crystals as yet. Some ingenuity, sure.

Admittedly, I can see how some people may not enjoy it. Some people are vertically challenged when it comes to the game play (I could myself among those generally). However, I’m not sure what to tell you. Not everyone will like all content I guess.

The new zone IS a jumping puzzle.

Yes and no. Beyond the 2 spots in the path where you need to do the assisted leap and lightning pulls aren’t enough to classify it as a jumping puzzle to me. You do as much jumping and bouncing around in typical exploration. It only becomes JP-like when you start trying for the crystals, which you could technically skip for a different achievement.

I’m not all that great at jumping puzzles either. In fact, I’ve technically completed all of….2, one of which was via portal. Yet, I am enjoying the new content with its unique skills (love lightning pull). I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve fallen to me death, but I’m still having a blast, and just laughing all the time. I’ve only had to waypoint a couple of times, usually there are plenty of willing people around to rez my sorry butt.

That said, I have 8 or 9 of the 16 achievements and the only jumping I’ve done as been in the new zone. Technically, I could get all 16 achievements without doing any of the jumping puzzles….just do the new zone achievements (exploration and sprint). Or, I could do some of the ‘easier’ kite achievements if I can’t manage all of the ones for Sprint. I’ve stopped caring about ‘getting them all’…I simply don’t have enough time to do that on 2 accounts, I’m content with just getting my 16. I find it a heck of a lot less stressful.

I could easily see this as being a recurring piece of content, after the initial story arc of procuring the trade agreement between LA and BFW. Since Colin has mentioned that recurring content will be something the living story leaves, I’m tending to lean that way in regards to this. I can see the ‘map’ itself staying, but the Zephyr and the traders would ‘make their rounds’ so to speak, before returning.

Why do people keep using the argument that zerker gear users aren’t interested in having fun? Don’t you understand that some people get enjoyment out of seeing massive damage numbers?

But no, bad gear is apparently “more fun” and has “more flair”. You guys just … baffle me.

Different gear does not equate to bad. A player is more than the gear they wear and the weapon they use, in all honestly.

I have no issue with people choosing to run all zerker armor. If that is how they enjoy playing, cool. You’re very correct that some people do enjoy just power housing through the game play, that’s fine. I take issue when people come along and tell me that by using something else I must be bad, or stupid. Quite frankly, I am neither. I am simply different. I enjoy playing a different way, with a different set up.

I accept how others play (don’t always necessarily agree), but I resent when people are intolerant of how I (and others play) and try forcing their ‘our way or no way’ on us when we aren’t even playing with you. You do you thing, I’ll do mine. I have no desire to run speed clears…..ever.

Too Much Temporary Content Can Only Harm GW2

We’ve said it a few times before, but I want to just re-iterate we’ve heard folks feedback on this and will be doing a much larger mix of permanent, recurring (content that can occur again in the future), and more world impacting releases as it relates to living world in the second half of the year.

So you think recurring content is permanent? Typical ANet jargon.
Recurring is recurring.
Permanent is permanent.
People want permanent content as in content that’s added that will exist year round. Not this “permanent, recurring” content that only comes every blue moon. That is not permanent no matter how many “living world” teams you have.

English 101, a list is comma delimited. Colin was making a list of things we will see in the future:

-Permanent content
-Recurring content
-More world impacting releases

Edit – recurring content is still technically permanent content, as it recurs on a set schedule. It is ‘in the game year round’ but only accessible during its schedule availability period. Only once it is completely removed from the game, no longer to return, would it no longer be ‘permanent content.’

Achievements are Not for Everyone

LanfearShadowflame.3189

I don’t mind ‘tough’ achievements. I have no issues working towards such things. For example, to me, the jumping puzzles are a massive PITA. But, with the kick in the pants from Aetherblades, I’ve started doing them, and even managed to complete a couple. There are many others on the list that I’m sure will make me want to yank my hair out in frustration, but that’s ok. I can opt to continue trying for them or not of my own volition.

What I tend to take issue with is when the achievement requires me to rely on other people in order to complete it. Take ‘Faster Than Light’ for example, while yes this is based on personal skill, it also requires that you find 4 other competent people in order to do it (and pray for no lag), and if you aren’t in some amazing guild, this is insane with pugs. If your team wipes, the only thing you can do is die, negating your chance at that achievement for that run. Now you get to start all over and hope the next group/run goes better. Not fun. As this is a ‘personal’ achievement, I don’t feel that it should require someone to have to rely on other players’ competence.

That’s an idea. Have it track which events in the chain you do (and what tier of completion you get), and get maybe a % increase in loot at the final event or something based on how much you participated in the chain as a whole.

Nothing else is acceptable. If you aren’t among their efficiency group, then you ‘suck’ or are ‘bad’ or whatever. The event scales, so the 30 players that showed up for the boss didn’t negatively impact the previous events of the chain. If anything they helped you with the final boss. And, trust me, if it’s the Ulgoth chain and you struggled with the prior events, you needed that help badly. Nobody forced you to do the other events, and nobody made them worse for you either.

I am sure that they helped a lot. 5 people against Ulgoth likely would have been a fail. That really isn’t the issue though. It would have been much more fun to have the people playing along for the event chain. It needed not be a struggle. There were clearly people available.

Plus, I was asked what event i was doing this time. I’ve seen it plenty of times on others. You argue that no one forced me to do the event. True enough. I do events because I like doing events. they are much more fun with more people.

I so see and agree that there is an issue here.

There are several chains where people stand around waiting for the final boss, but don’t bother helping with the pre-req events to get that boss to spawn. I do agree that something should be done to get more people to help on the pre-reqs, especially if there is only a small group and they are struggling; however, I’m not sure what could be done that wouldn’t potentially harm innocent bystanders.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

See above, discussing fun is irrelevant. Fun is subjective. They might be running for fun, but they are running – crippled -for fun . Whether they find it fun or not is irrelevant to the fact that they are gimping themselves.

Which is the point so many of you seem remarkably thick to absorb. “Fun” is a subjective concept. We can’t discuss what’s “fun” because there are no objective parameters. Some people think it’s fun to clear challenges as efficiently as possible, some like to try to clear challenges by gimping themselves as much as possible (e.g.: naked runs). Whatever you prefer is your problem, and completely subjective. What is more efficient however, is factual. Full berserker. If you wanna be efficient you go full berserker. If you don’t care about that go whatever, doesn’t matter, the game is easy enough as is..

Yes fun is subjective. Its different for everyone.

However, you are assuming that by running something not 100% efficient is gimping them. Just because they aren’t being ‘efficient’ doesn’t mean they are gimp[ed] (wow [g]i[m]p is a senored word? really anet?) in any way. That’s what you seem to be ‘remarkably thick to absorb,’ as you so kindly put it.

For many people, this is a game. Not a job. Efficiency has nothing to do with it. That is not a crutch. That is not ‘gimping’ them as you seem to see it. It does not make them bad. It does not mean they suck.

The way I look at it (and this is purely my opinion here), is the people running the full Berserker gear are the ones who are gimp[ed]. They have to rely on sheer punch to powerhouse through, otherwise they simply can’t do it. They have to kill ‘it’ before whatever ‘it’ is can hit them, otherwise they are pretty well toast. This doesn’t require thought, just button mashing and maybe a dodge or 2.

Editing so [g]i[m]p and gimp[ed] aren’t censored. Hilarious that they are but gimping isn’t.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Considering I work (hour commute to and from) and have a family, I came to terms a while back that I won’t get every achievement in the game, temporary or otherwise…and I’m ok with that.

I do try to get them all. I did the AR dungeon I don’t know how many times, with how many different people. Never finished it. Came close a couple of times, but we wiped, and people (including myself) ran out of available time. I lagged too badly to manage the Faster than Light Achievement, even though I tried for it every time. I’m at least happy that I tried.

I think a Historian type NPC is a good idea, simply for those that would like to ‘catch up’ on the back stories they may have missed. Some people don’t enjoy dungeons, or simply may not want to do Fractals and shouldn’t necessarily ‘need to’ just to get a back story. Now, if they want to, say, experience the dungeon from a specific back story, then sure, Fractals is great.

New content is fine, Temp content is fine, All new content that is temp only is not fine.

If they fixed the current dungeons making them useful and fun with some good means to an end without grinding 20+ runs, make a better way to get Precursors and the ability to Fast change traits and armors, then this new temp content might be a GRAND idea.

With so many problems in the world, it just feels like they are hiding the bad with new fresh things….

I hope Anet has plans to fix all those things, then maybe I might enjoy the stressful RACE to complete new temp content without trying to get my armor sets and legendary in a reasonably time for me to wear and have fun.

Anet is working on the dungeons, as well as larger content. Check out, for example, the recent News article where Colin Johnson talks about the future of living world (July 2nd). In addition, we should be getting a lengthy blog update by the end of the month with a general overview of their high level plans for the last half of the year.

That just means you’re bad players and you need to be better. It doesn’t mean that the gear itself is worse. You’re using a crutch. You’ll run faster once you let go of it.

See, you just lose the attention of people by saying things like “you’re bad players”. Bad players? Sheesh. I was trying to listen to your view before you say things like this. Now you will just annoy people. Just because someone doesn’t agree with you that zerker is not ALWAYS the best way to go no questions brooked, doesn’t make them bad. Maybe it makes them better and more versatile, adaptable to more situations. Without the backup of someone with some form of healing, many zerker builds go down quickly. Honestly, if you want a discussion, avoid ticking people off. If you just want to flame, then you’re as bad for this discussion as you think the rest of us are at playing.

I feel the same, and completely agree with everything you just said.

Here’s the thing you’re both missing: Like it or not, it’s true. The only reason you wouldn’t go full berserker is if you, or your group, simply aren’t good enough to. That has nothing to do with what’s most efficient.

Is running with crutches better than running without them? Well, if you have a broken leg you kinda have to… But running without crutches is still better.

No, they aren’t running with crutches. They are running for fun, for enjoyment.

You are running with blinders. Assuming that anyone running non-cookie cutter is doing it because they must obviously suck, when in many instances its simply not the case. Not everyone plays to simply powerhouse through.

There’s a difference.

Anet likes to reuse content, as such, there is the possibility that some of this stuff could come back. Bazaar sort of looks like/reminds me of a traveling carnival or perhaps something like the Traveler from GW1. It’s something they could easily bring back, probably with nifty new tricks and quests each time. Perhaps similarly to WoW’s Darkmoon Faire. Only time will tell.

I think too much temporary content will harm Guild Wars 2 for a certain percentage of the playerbase, but I don’t think it’s the majority of the player base.

snip

That will definitely lose them some of their player base, and probably gain them some other types of players as well. I mean some people bought Guild Wars 2 just to play SAB. It wasn’t my thing but some people really loved it.

I agree, for some people, the temporary content is just not their thing. They will likely eventually throw in the hat and move on to some other game that is more to their play type, if they haven’t already. Many of them may still hang out here and whine, kitten, and moan about ‘what they want’ the game to be, but hopefully Anet won’t cater to it.

I wouldn’t have an issue if GW2 became more of a niche game like its predecessor. I don’t need 10 million people to play (and enjoy) the game, and honestly, from the looks of the forums, the more people we get the more acidic its becoming around here. I’d much prefer the smaller, close knit community of people with manners like GW1 seemed to have. [Yes, GW1 had their kittenholes too, but GW1 Guru was never this vile when I was frequenting it.]

I think the living story is a smart way forward, because I don’t see other games doing anything like it.

Personally, I like the temporary content [even if my OCD inner demon doesn’t]. It keeps me interested, it keeps me busy, and I like the little stories. It’ll be interesting to see what all they actually do, do with it and where it will eventually lead. It has great potential, and I agree, seems to be a smart step forward in its uniqueness. However, it could still flop and they could land face down in the mud, though I don’t foresee this as happening.

I haven’t played Guardian enough to say aye or nay on that, but I definitely support ele. You have conditions in just the normal skills, you have healing in the water line. The additional health and toughness are always helpful on a squishy, especially if you don’t always play with people in pve.

I probably wouldn’t do ‘full celestial’ when we have that option, but I’d probably use it on a few pieces for the overall ‘rounding out’ of my ele.

I’m very much in favor of through testing when it comes to development, with separate environments for the various testing applications. Development environment (tdd development, code coverage – unit testing, functional testing, possible automation testing all added to the cod and verified as passing), test environment (initial ‘feature’ testers), pre-production environment (integration and regression testing), and then finally released to the production environment (us, the users).

Testing with thorough scenarios is a GOOD thing. Do it!

Temporary content, achievements, and OCD

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: LanfearShadowflame.3189

LanfearShadowflame.3189

I use the Achievements list as a means of goal setting for myself, essentially. Things to work for over time.

The living world achievements, on the other hand, give me a fast and furious short term goal to work on in addition to any long term ones I’ve opted to work on. For example, Aetherblades actually kicked my kitten into doing jumping puzzles. Not just trying them, but overcoming the sheer frustration of falling 1000+ times and completing the kitten. I yelled in triumph when I completed the puzzle in Metrica Province (Goemm’s Lab?). Scared my husband right out of his chair. But I was so kitten proud of myself. It took me 4 hours, but I did it! Without the temporary kick in the pants achievement, I’d have walked away after the first 50 falls and said screw it, I’ll try it later, but the ‘limited time’ helped me grit my teeth and buckle down.

Now, while I try to get every limited time achievement, like Vayne, I have come to the conclusion that in some instances, that just isn’t going to happen. The OCD completionist in me rages at this, but I’m dealing with it, and I’m finding it to be a good thing. I’m definitely less stressed out about it now. I have started looking at the events as similar to one’s life experiences. The ones you attend/get affect ‘who you are’ as a player in a sense.

On the other hand, my husband hasn’t been doing the living story stuff (heck he hasn’t really played since Nov) and isn’t sure if he wants to come back because he plays for the story. Having missed the living story arcs, he’s missing those story components and can’t ‘experience’ them now. He could care less about the achievements.

I would think having a way to experience the past stories for new/returning players would be good (for the story flow), but I don’t think the people that ‘missed them’ should have the option to complete the achievements. Technically you ‘werent there’, itd be like trying to relive someone else’s party. The best you could really do would be to view the videos or pictures taken at it – ie some sort of cut scene to catch the person up on the backstory.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Nope. I understand that it’s a different animal [even if my husband doesn’t], that is based from/tied to the first one, but has massively evolved. There are some things its done better than its predecessor, there are some things I think it does worse, but I also recognize that it is all personal opinion, and I love in none the less. Temporary content working against GW2 [Merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

LanfearShadowflame.3189

Yes, I do! It’s content that because of GW2 horizontal progression will still remain entertaining to old and new players! It won’t hurt will it? Just because you don’t want it or you assume it will go unused, doesn’t mean that’s the reality of it.

No where did I say that I did not want permanent content. In fact I bluntly stated that not all content should be temporary, implying that I do indeed feel that there should be SOME static content. However, there is a very delicate balance that needs to struck here.

The temporary content allows for an engaging, evolving world, giving us the chance to experience new stories, new events, what have you. Each one needs to leave a lasting effect on the world, just by happening. It could be subtle ( new jumping puzzle), it could be drastic (a whole new map), but something. However, like all ‘events’ I don’t think it should last forever. That’d be like saying Dragon Bash should be in LA all year around so that new people can experience is any time they want. It creates stagnation, and paradox (Zaitan being killable more than once on the same character is enough paradox for me, personally). These are the experiences of your character’s ‘life.’

So you make a new character or are completely new to the game and you can’t experience it again, ok I can see part of the issue here. Technically, this new character wasn’t “alive” when this event happened, so I can understand missing out on the experience. (Its like not being able to make it to the hospital to watch your child be born, your wife sure as heck isn’t going to shove the kid back in so you can relive the moment. Just ow.) Its unfair that you missed the content because you simply werent there.

Others have brought up the point that with tv shows, they can tivo it if they cant be there for it, and even in my given example, someone could have video taped the child’s birth, so you could experience it after the fact. Perhaps having some type of NPC that could give you some backstory/cut scenes might be good. Maybe giving the option for those characters to access the instanced content to catch up, but not get the achievements would work. I call out not getting the achievements because you do need something to encourage/reward people playing at the time of the arc release to do it in its allotted time window. Those that don’t care about the achieves, can then do it later at their own leisure.

I do see both sides of the issue with the temporary content. (In fact had a loooong debate with my husband over it last night, because he’s missed pretty much all of it). I don’t think just leaving it all in the game will solve the issues though.

Not to mention, leaving in a lot of unused content makes for huge downloads with a lot of wasted space.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

I don’t think what people want, necessarily, is permanent content [for pve]. Not in the traditional sense. Let’s face it, permanent static content gets boring/stale and then abandoned to gather dust.

Is that the state of all the permanent content we have now then? Because I don’t think so. I don’t see the harm in the content remaining in the game for players to repeat such as dungeons and surely would be nice for new players to enjoy if they were to join the game later.

Most content in MMORPGs becomes abandoned because of the typical steep vertical progression. Because of that, it doesn’t get revisited except for the experience of it. All the other aspects of it are completely useless.

GW2 is a different game though, built on horizontal progression. Because of that, every aspect of it is still relevant and rewarding, including the loot obtained.

Do a search on the forum looking for people complaining about everything from dungeons to empty zones to spvp:

“Maps are dead”
“Nothing new”
" No one does ‘x’ "

Just to give a few complaints. You think adding more static content will help?

Sure, there are always some that enjoy going back and doing the same old things, but when its always the same, it does get stale and then people stop doing it. How many people do dungeons outside of CoF p1? Better yet, how many people do AC now thakittens been revamped to be harder, which is. what. they. asked. for! The answer, not a whole heck of a lot….you can find a long list of complaints here on the forums about it. Anet has even stated that they will revamping all of the dungeons, would they do this if they were popular?

How many people are complaining that they don’t care to level alts because its boring? No compelling reason to do so? Does this sound like wanted to repeat the existing static content? Even with other racial story lines, they just dont care to do it.

Heck, people don’t play the static content that DID get left behind, which supports my theory as to what people are looking for – once you’ve done it, you’re ready to move on and experience something new. Sure, you might come back to it, but not often.

True, the living story isnt the be all, end all answer to all issues. Everything cannot (and shouldn’t) be temporary. Last effects are required. Depth is required. Challenge and thought are desired. We’ll see how it pans out.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Just because they said they don’t have one in the forcast for this year or next, doesn’t mean they will never do one.

On the other hand, if they can provide that content via the regular updates, freely and effectively, why the heck not?

There has been a lot of “well the living story sucks so this wont work” and truthfully, no one can know that. Not even Anet. It IS doable, the question is whether or not they can pull it off. I think they can, and I’m willing to wait and see.

Then you and everyone else doing it can stop talking about people that don’t relate to me or my message about one-time/temporary content.

I say the game has lost players, which is has and people call me a “doomsayer”. I say the game needs improvement and people say “why change anything? I’m happy” Clearly a lot of people are not! And they left and/or are leaving because they are not satisfied with just getting temporary updates. Not a threat! Just a fact!

If what we propose doesn’t tread on what you are getting/already have then it’s completely unfair to dismiss what we have to say to make more people happy with the game. Also when I say we, I mean myself and many people I know.

For the 100th time, I’m not against the one time events. You say I didn’t pay attention to your message well so far nobody has kittening paid attention to mine either when I say that.

ANet! By all means, give these people their quick biscuits but don’t let that stall you in giving other players deeper content they crave this game to have!

I don’t think what people want, necessarily, is permanent content [for pve]. Not in the traditional sense. Let’s face it, permanent static content gets boring/stale and then abandoned to gather dust.

I think more people would be happy is the living story content was simply available a little longer, before going away. Let them glut themselves on running the new story a few thousand times in say…6 weeks, and then when its shininess wears off, remove it. It can be reused later, or added as a fractal to revitalize at a later date. (Anet has a love of reusing content)

At the same time, they have to keep the new content coming to keep -the locusts- cough cough the harder core, more hours a day players entertained. So I propose overlapping the releases, with the twist that once you move onto the next release, the previous one becomes no longer available to that character. Heck, make it re-livable on the alt, since most of it is instanced (or could be) anyway.

I think the biggest kitten about the ‘temporary’ content is simply not being able to access the important parts of it (the story) that tie into the next piece. I think that should be available to your character, but not necessarily the achievements for it if you missing its “scheduled” arc (got to have some motivation to do it in its time window after all).

Hopefully, now that Anet is coming out of their ‘testing phase’ for the living story, we’ll start seeing more impact, and more depth going forward. This may still take time. Given Anets story-telling ability, they do have broad branching, interesting lore, but sometimes have a hard time bring the pieces together for their players. Prophecies story was a mess, and I found it muddled. It got better with Factions onward. Hopefully it will be similar here….better with time.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

This just killed a bunch of my excitement for the future of this game.

We’re never going to visit Elona or Cantha now. Any future Dragons will likely be killed off cheaply if we even get to fight them at all.

I’m tired of fighting unrelated side stories that feel like filler. What happened to the other dragons?!

^ didn’t read article

Yes I did. The living story has been extremely underwhelming.

The article does state that the 4 living story teams are but a fraction of the dev force. It also states that they have larger teams working on larger content (could easily be Cantha, Elona, other dragons).

A new News article also states that the living story for the past 6 months has basically been a ‘testing’ phase. That we can expect to see much more to it in the future.
