I am always surprised by the incompetence of development strategy in this game. To elaborate a bit:
So you had your pvp and pve split, to give people a geargrind free pvp – great, now only build and skill shows who wins, not time spent grinding. You also made it so that player while pvping cannot obtain currency used in pve (gold) – ok it makes sense, because then there might be an increase in currency thus creating an hyperinflation ingame, since pvp has no sinkholes like repairs to take the gold away. To compensate pvp players you created the currency used only in pvp (glory).
Now you start pushing updates, but keep ignoring pvp playerbase – very few things were added there. PvE players get all attention: new maps, new instances, new items, etc. Then you figure out that it would be a good time to allow people to train with their friends so you release custom arenas for that purpose. The only way to get one is by using gems – a currency that you CAN buy by using PVE (!!!) currency, but not PvP. So you developed a product that cannot be baught by the target audience, while it can be easily accessible by people who are not using it. Its like making running shoes free for people without legs. And don’t give me this RNG crap about creating dyes and selling them for gold – I only once got a dye worth more than 1 gold from all that I crafted (I played this game from BW1), the funny thing is I could not put it in trading post because I had NO GOLD.
There are people like Azreel that say: well just use real money, because then you support the development for this game. I have some issue with this statement:
1. There is no development in pvp, so in your opinion is it fair for pvp players to support pve development?
2. Why the playerbase that gets all the attention (thats the PvE crowd if you are blind, deaf and have not noticed that) gets all the new things for free? How about they pay gems to go to dungeons with your friends – it would be very interesting to see the reaction.
3. Money that is earned from gemstore probably does not go directly into development, since anet and ncsoft really is not the same company.
4. I actually think there were as many thing removed from pvp as added, so again, why support the pve development?
Now about the argument of “Well you should not expect something, because if you expect something from the developers that means you are spoiled”. I do not want to go into marketing and creating loyal customers, since Diage did it already. But I will remind you the messages anet & ncsoft send to us before the release – Gw2 is the first AAA pvp mmorpg, will be the first esport mmorpg, etc. After 10 (!!!) months they released a very basic platform, obtained only with real $ nonetheless, for a normal team vs team (note that not a random, but a set team vs team) game that should have been there if not from beta then at launch at least, since it IS one of the core elements on which you can build a comp player vs player game. And now there are c*nts in forum that are saying that our expectations were too high. Me and my 5 friends got tricked by this “marketing strategy”* of a competitive AAA pvp mmorpg. We played from the beginning but after a while more and more people left since there was nothing but a boring one mode 3 map game with the same professions on the other side using the same strategy and while mechanics were great there was no infrastructure to help and support the tediousness. So the expectations that pvp players were (some still are) having are not too high, they are too low, since the current product they already took our money for is not what was promised.
*basically a lie

Very funny, yet somehow sad that people qq started immediately after they noticed that defeating necro would require a bit more thinking now…
kitten is so funny to see the amount of qq about necros in the forum – the class was barely usable previously, just signet of undeath and putting wells. Now they added a new condition, spectral wall that gives fear for 5 sec on 40 sec cds if you are too stupid to keep running into it, moved couple of traits around, and suddenly when people cannot steamroll the class without changing the strategy everyone looses their minds…
L2P
GW2 is never going to become a serious esport
Who says it has to?
Not every game that has competitive elements (ie. PvP gameplay) needs to become a “serious esport”, which by that I assume you mean professionally sponsored, livecast from a central location, etc.
There are plenty of other games for that. It’s not needed here.
Well anet said it is building a first esport mmo or a triple A PvP game, yet we see the pve-crap they developed all over these 10 months…
Today my rating increased to 721 so it is actually the opposite of decay =]] And yes, i understand that some people may have lost higher place by playing, but still it is funny how incompetent this ranking system was made.
Yes they will be available, the price is probably unknown yet (maybe someone will correct me since I am not sure about it).
I have not played tpvp in a long time and actually my rank is increasing – yesterday it was 730, now it is 726. So if I continue this “not playing streak” will probably get myself in top100 np…
No one can actually be this stupid as Ababmer, so close this troll thread mods…
ANY pvp mode would be better than just conquest 24/7…
It’s a 1 second fear, Deimos. Your fear is actually better than ours.
but what about other types of fears? hmmm k i’ll start a fear comparison topic then.
DS fear is also 1 sec, so even summed up it still has a shorter duration.
Dam those stealthy necromancers, always ambushing me with their #1 staff
currently warriors are able to do 100% to 0% hp with hundred blades along with constantly charging all around the map. it feels really overpowered
I would say that new people leave the pvp because:
A) 8×8 is pure kitten
B) Tournaments are just there to feed premades
C) Conquest mode is very boring, and it is THE ONLY MODE for pvp.
1. More modes (dueling, arena, ctf, etc.)
2. Solo queue separated from premades
3. Matchmaking that actually works and leaderboards for previously mentioned.
Are you not satisfied by standing in a circle all round? Madness…
In my opinion the new condition should have an effect that prevents cleansing conditions mindlessly, like some classes do it now. It should be either dmg on removing condition or 3-4 sec daze or even both.
I actually love commanders….if you spot a commander in s-tpvp you already know you’re going to get a free kill\win
100 golds for a big “Kick Me” sign on you sounds really expensive to me…but well, if they’re fine with that no problem for me…
Agree – always fun seeing commander sign, most of the fights are very easy, since you cant use your wvw door punching experience here…
Today I have spend in total probably 5 hours playing in custom arena that had these sets of rules:
2 players per team / no capping / team that reaches 30 points win. Sometimes we interpreted the rules as if you die you cannot re enter combat if your teammate is still alive, sometimes we agreed to fight in a more free mode – you spawn and can choose to rush out (although not always advisable since you can get 1×2 killed).
It was the most fun I had in gw2 pvp all the way from the release. So thank you to the person who made this possible. I have to mention that there were many very interesting team comps, and WARRIOR (!!!) was very viable in 2×2 environment. If I recall correctly the team was condition warrior with longbow/shield+sword & hgh engy vs phantasm mesmer and bm ranger. Warrior’s team have won 30-20
I also have noticed that bunkers are not annoying (since mostly they just try to rez downed teammate) and pure burst teams do not win in 2×2 – the more balanced characters team mostly wins. So it is still mind boggling why does ANET ignore multiple requests for more simplistic modes, that surely will not consume so much time developing and would increase not only the amount of fun you can have in pvp, but perhaps even the player base. And again – thank you the person who created this custom arena.
P.S. Most of the player that were playing in this 2×2 servers were r40+
P.P.S. In your opinion should ANET ignore the blatant fact that most CA and hotjoins now are duels/DM and just keep pushing the conquest?
Interesting survey, but some questions could give more information or more options to choose from.
By comparisons you use (cod, bf, wow) I can say that you probably have never played a good competitive game. Is gw2 lacking – yes it is in some aspects, but the combat system is still ahead ofany other mmorpg currently and in near future.
How squishy were the targets? =]
Go to 5×5 hotjoins since it has a bigger chance of becoming something closer to tpvp – tell him the main objectives and roles of this game practice a bit, then go dual queue. Leaderboards here are meaningless, since there is no split between solo and premade, so do not worry about it. If anet has at least some intelligence left they will wipe and split leaderboards soon, but somehow I doubt it : |
But that would make developers develop something for pvp, I do not think that is where their priorities are…
the percent is the esports measurement. if you reach 100% you are officially esports.
And what does that mean? How can I improve my percentage? Right now I’m at 80%.
Simple – you need to esport…
Agree with majority 8×8 is too much. Dam I wish that anet would just develop a simple DM mode for various amount of players (2×2 3×3 5×5), it would require so little work, yet would go a lot in “fun pvp” department…
I am sick of wars, 3 in every team. The good ones put their flags all over and start kicking for huge dps, and the bad ones use charge+frenzy for an unblockable 100% kill : O
Well last post about poe, since I only mentioned it because that was the game I went to and did not want to compare it to gw2, just a fun game to pvp 1×1 or with few friends and you were the one that started comparing it to gw2, but nvm.
So to fix your errors: melee is actually stronger than ranged in most cases at pvp since things like flicker-strike and stun per hit makes it very hard to kite (and getting frozen through range is very easily countered). Also poe devs added the same thing as gw2 devs added to pvp: few more maps. So minus the leaderboard it is pretty much the same, and we all see how “good” leaderboard is.
Now I can tell what in my opinion is the main thing gw2 needs to succeed:
- More pvp modes (generic ones can be copied from other games: TDM, duels, 2×2, 3×3, CTF, etc.). This would not only increase the amount of players in pvp community, but would also create a vast amount of new builds for characters, since if you do not need to stand in a point to win maybe more people would try new things with professions. Also modes for fewer people would make it a better experience to play if you do not have 4 friends.
After that, if the pvp community gets more and more people it would create a better environment for arena net to get $ from pvp – it may even be a form of a gemstore that sells cosmetics or it may be a paid bracket of previously mentioned modes with prizes for winners. If that takes off anet could turn the attention to the main competitive mode: conquest (why did they choose only this is still a bit mind boggling). From revenues generated via pvp they could launch tournaments with real prizes now, that would attract more attention not only from the increased community of pvp players but maybe even from sponsors. And the scenario (lets call it optimistic) could go further even reaching e-sport, but from the things developed in these 7 months I can say that it is very unlikely this game will get up from this hole any time soon…

No I am not, the lack of modes is what bores me. I have started playing gw2 with my 5 friends, and they all left months ago, since playing the same thing over and over and over again was not considered fun for them. Can’t blame them, barely log in, usually just check the forum. But now went back to counter – strike, also played a bit of PoE (that is still in beta but has more development than gw2 during all the time is was available for major public), even think of selling this game to get my money back, a thing I have only done with the worst purchase in my life D3…
PoE? rofl that game is the definition of a hardcore grind pve tittle, even the competitive play is all about pve lol please dont even compare it with gw2. And also, that game was in beta even before gw2 launched
True – PoE is purely pve game made like diablo 2, but even PURE pve dungeon grind game has more things for PVP then gw2: poe has more maps, more modes (1×1 and 3×3), different level tiers (1-28, unlimited), more viable builds per character, not to mention different modes all together like the cut throat mode, that combines pve leveling with pvp. So what does that say about the “AAA pvp game”, “First e-sport mmorpg” gw2?

Your not even on the leaderboard…
The leaderboards are not well made, so why do you think that a persons opinion does not count or is somehow inferior to ranked players?
I want to know when warriors will become FotM xD
They already were in beta weekends, so you are late for that : )
It would be really interesting to get the developers view on new modes for the game, so I would appreciate if you could ask:
- Are there any new pvp modes planned for gw2 (just the basic ones that a lot of other mmorpgs have: arena 2×2, 3×3, CTF, TDM, etc.)?
Arguments why this is important in my opinion:
- Modes with less people required would make it a lot more fun for players that do not have additional 4 members to play
- It would probably increase the pvp community
- It may create build variety just because people will not be required to stand in points for victory
Also for those people who think that custom arenas will fill mode void: I have to disagree, these arenas will have only modifications on the same conquest mode (like more/less points for capture or kills, different amount of points to achieve victory, etc.) so it will not really be a new mode with different gameplay.

Next update is MAKE IT OR BRAKE IT !!! But joking aside, I have lost all hopes and dreams about pvp being developed – if I should guess it will have a generic poor balancing attempt and if we are lucky 1 new crummy map. No new modes, no normal solo queue, nothing worth while…
I disagree with your points why it will not become an esport. In my opinion it is just that the game is extreamly lacking – its boring to play conquest, its even more boring to watch it. This game had great ideas, no healers, no gear advantage, fast combat, blocking/dodging by yourself, but it has not been developed at all since beta weekend. They should have implemented new modes already, that may require different builds of players (no more bunker-burst), thus creating a larger pvp community, since people tend to like variety instead of the same monotonous thing.
But currently as we can all see – pvp gets new strange “balance” updates (?), while pve (the main focus of the development), gets new maps, new instances, new gear, new modes, etc. Some people say that it is because pve brings money so that is why everything is for pve crowd. Maybe, maybe, but how can arena net hope to get $ from pvp community if they do not invest in it at all? They should spend money to get money, that is how investing works…
P.S. I agree that leaderboards have to be improved.
Symbol of the KITTENS? Dam you have some imagination, I can’t see even cats, let alone kittens…
I was happy for new invisible leaderboards, lets hope they add more invisible pvp modes as swiftly as they added everything else in pvp, since conquest is one of the most boring pvp scenarios…
Remove stomping from stealth. That’s stupid by design.
And yet stealth does not give you immunity to interrupts like other stomps by other classes (for example ele)…
Tbh, it’s a bit of a storm in a teacup scenario. The balance in this game is more than fine and actually quite commendable.
Lack of features and infrastructure has been its undoing since day one, not balance.
I agree with the lack of infrastructure, also in my opinion in this mmorpg the class balance is by far better in comparison to any others that I have played (aion, l2, wow). Also I do not think that so many people think balance is off to this or that class, in my opinion major concern is viability – this game was advertised as any class can be played in any way, so that makes it sound that thief bunker should be as viable as ele, but currently it is not what we are seeing.
P.S. But splitting PvP and PvE would have only benefits in easing the workload for developers, so I have no idea why to they want to keep juggling 3 different things.
(edited by Lukin.4061)
Well the only change that happened to pvp from beta was the rating system and leaderboards implementation. Oh and its a brand new type of system – INVISIBLE one, since invisibility is the future…
Everybody wants 1v1 or 2v2… But I want 16v16. Or a big pvp game. In GW1 they started 8v8, then in the 1st or 2nd expansion they had 16v16 or something bigger than 8v8 and it was a lot more fun. Heck what about 5v5v5. GW1 had it they had up to 4 maybe 6 teams going at each other, halls of heroes!
If theres anything I remember the most about GW1 its agony in pve and halls of heroes in pvp and whoever had the hoh had the underworld.
If you want 16v16 or any kind of other size zerg vs zerg, there is wvw for that. Massive amount of people in my opinion reduce the skill required to win immensely…
+1 for 2×2 and 3×3, but that suggestion was here from autumn so nothing new : |
The answer is simple.
Soon.
Would be amazing if they would make the leaderboards visible today. But they screwed up so hard in the past, i dont really believe in stuff like that anymore.
I personally think, that soon is too good of an answer, my guess is “When its ready”…
I first guessed that this “box” update was a joke but then I realized that they actually made some kind of instance for pve crowd again. Now that is just another spit in the face of pvp community – we have NOTHING added from beta (yes 2 maps and “invisible rating” would count as something, if it actually made pvp more fun), from kittening beta…
And don’t give me this crap that pve is the one that is generating all the income – first of all the game has sold 3 million copies, and since the game was advertised as a “AAA pvp” or “first esport mmorpg” it is fair to say that some of those 3 million people have bought this game solely for pvp (like I with my 5 friends did), so in a way they still got the money from pvpers. Secondly they should not expect to get a cent from pvp since they are not creating anything in there its just the same clueless developers saying same bullkitten every month.
I actually believe that Guildwars2 in the future will be a perfect case study in universities – how can bad communication and even worse development destroy something with such a huge potential…
In wow the real fun arenas start when you get a gear to be equal to other teams, so the real game starts after meaningless grind (with the fun part of loosing just because other team has better gear). Here the real game starts right away since everyone is equal, as it should be. When only skill matters then truly a better player is victorious, not a player that had more time grinding kitten.
Strange, probably its the increase in pve players at spvp that this kind of topics start to pop up again as it was at the beginning of autumn: “gear needs to give me advantage, because I spend moar time grinding : o”. No it should not, in any game that is aimed towards being competitive having gear advantage is a very poor development choice.

Done, good survey again.
Do you use this new currency to get something useful (preferably in the mists) or is it just some pets or other junk?
I actually thought it will be a comedy video with flags and kicks, but still a decent build before today =]
