Hey, im just curious, is it just me or is spvp not what you thought it was gonna be?i remember when all the fuzz started, whole youtube was filled with spvp, like it was gonna be the super mega best pvp game for a hundred years forward, super advertised and super events making million dollar challanges and so on.

well i just gotta say its still the best game since L2 for me, i just thought it would be alot bigger than what it is.

PS: i haven’t played any Pve or WwW, maybe those 2 just outshines spvp?

In my opinion WvW is players vs doors where you walk with a zerg to farm points and spam ranged aoe. PvE is as boring as in any other game – go and mindlessly kill mobs, so could only force myself to lvl one character, nothing special at all, buy hey, some people like killing things that do the same thing over and over again…

WoW didn’t have arena’s until… 1 year of release?? I think. So, yeah. Be patience.

WoW was not aimed in becoming “A first AAA pvp mmorpg” or “…e-sport mmorpg”. So yeah, not really a comparison. Also do you honestly think that gw2 – a game aimed towards being an esport, was released with enough things in pvp, since to me it looks like a beta product used to show people what can your pvp engine do?

Make Heart of the Mists free to play

I’m sure the Mists, with its amazing pvp mechanics, infrastructure and pvp modes, would most definitely and with no exception leave newcomers hooked for life, resulting in thousands of new purchases simply because the pvp (especially hotjoin!) is so godmeow amazing that everyone would purchase the game right off the bat after going through that incredible one-in-a-lifetime experience of what is normally considered an eyecancer-invoking cesspool of doom featuring a mix of tiny asuras hiding behind a gozillion of mesmer pets with giant norns moving around as if time flows differently for them (extra comedy effect on norn/asuran mesmers)! Oh and did I mention the norn male warrior downed state cry? Best thing eva, leaves no soul cold (no joke).

Well, it might work, who knows. It all depends on how they’d implement it and if they’d actually bump pvp into a release state by the time they’d do it.

At the post above, red-barring in GW1 normally didn’t get you very far (at least in the competitive scene), especially not on a prot monk, which is pretty much the best and most skill rewarding type of a ‘healer’ class ever to be implemented in an rpg.

Agree with eyecancer part – people who suggest f2p mists do not take into consideration what kind of environment will the new players come. Crappy development at its finest, so I do not think there would be a lot of $$$ for anet if they choose this strategy.

Also lets not forget admitting that they created such a crappy place for pvp that they need to make it f2p is not really what they can do…

P.S. The f2p suggestion is not new, I have seen in in the second month of the game, so its probably even older than that.

people need to understand that one of Arenanet goal with this PvP is to make it into an e-sport. The game mode is pretty good for an e-sport as it is easy to understand, tactical and very fast paced. Also most e-sports around only have 1 real game mode so I don’t see why having one game mode is a problem! Also please play the game with a team if you do not already, find some people to play with and you will see how fun and tactical this gamemode is. But yes ele at the moment is kind of ruining the game a little right now, making it far to hard to take a point and with very little skill, once this is fixed and ladders are added this game will be so sweet!

Because every other game that IS an esport does have other game modes in variation at the very least.

Seriously, none of the esport games have just ONE game mode.

Never heard of counter-strike?

Counter-strike modes: de – plant-defuse the bomb in A or B, this is a mode that is played competitively, cs – rescue the hostages from t spawn and bring to ct spawn, dm – played either with a team or ffa type, not talking about different modes all together where shooting is not the main aspect of the game: hns, surf, jail, etc. Also even de is played by different rules, or “modes” mr12, mr15. So have you heard of counter-strike?

Ontopic – I agree with everything OP said, since this game is so lacking in variety it is insane that they think this is the way to go to create an esport. Esport is not created by developers it is created by the players, since there needs to be an interest not only to play, but to watch and watching a dude stand in one spot for entire map isn’t as interesting as they probably think…

Advice against thieves?

Why would you go melee as necro? Roll condition, get staff/scepter+dagger (or war horn) and it is almost impossible for a thief to kill you with the basic backstab build.

What utilities I am usually using – consume conditions as a healing ofc, well of darkness for aoe blind, spectral armor, for elite either golem or plague form (depends on what is your job in the team).

Usually it is very easy to guess what a thief is going to do: if he is putting on basilisk venom he will soon go steal->cnd->backstab, so you can avoid it by a well timed dodge, or you can stunbreak+well, or you can DS+fear, or even better put a fear mark on yourself so when he uses steal he gets feared. After the initial burst fail it is very hard for a thief to recover (45 sec. cd) so put some conditions and interrupt his healing, also dodge the occasional cloak and dagger (a very noticeable animation). That is it, a common thief died you still have 80-90% hp : )

P.S. Just now noticed this is a question about wvw – have no idea how to fight zergs there, so you can ignore this post if you are not planning on going to normal pvp.

You fellas do realize this isnt DOTA or LoL. This is a different game with diffetent rules. Not everything will be discovered….look at Eles. They wrre considered the worst class…now look at em.

Balance isnt instantaneous but takes time. Quite frankly im sure those horrible classes are just fine but waiting for someone to discover a new build.

First of all, no one here is comparing gw2 with lol or dota or any other moba type game. Eles were considered the worst class for few reasons, one of those were the worst downed state skills in game and another was that the builds were focused on more interesting aspect not just bunkering and healing. Now after few patches you can see that almost every ele is running the same build.

People complain about the game with very good arguments, that is not whining, that is still hoping for any changes that would actually benefit PvP.

Also “ps. Remember the best parts of this game are WvW and PvE. Arena PvP is not” – this game was marketed as a “first mmorpg esport” a “triple A pvp”, so maybe this should be the main focus of development, not crappy pve? And WvW is as much a PvP as the costume brawl thing that happened in some event…

I have bought this game purely for PvP aspect – no gear advantage, no pocket healers, great combat mechanics were everything I wanted in an mmorpg. But, as you all have noticed, the development is atrocious for PvP – they did not add ANY new major thing all the way from beta.

It would be less frustrating if this kind of pathetic development was in every aspect of the game, so you could lie to yourself that this is how anet cares about its own game. But as you have noticed the mind numbing mob killing part of the game (pve) had a ton of new things implemented, so that this is going to be a AAA PvP, or an esport it seems was purely a lie (or a “marketing strategy”)…

What will be "custom" about custom arenas?

Hmm, well judging by anet pvp development, I would guess:

- Amount of players
- Amount of maps in the rotation and rotation itself
- The name of the server you rent

Is it just me or the amount of gold pvp players obtain over time is ~1000 times lower than pve players? It is interesting what does anet think about the prices of “renting”…

Yes, it actually is the same problem – a 100b war kills most of people that have just joined pvp, since they have no knowledge of how to counter them. Same goes for BS thief, same goes to almost any glass cannon build.

People still complain about thieves? Hearsteeker spamming thieves nonetheless? Do you get killed by 100b war too? Overall his post was a long qq about thieves and mesmers, also HEALERS – are you insane? It is the worst thing in any game, people with no skill can actually defeat a better player just by having a pocket healer? Balance in this game is ALOT better than in wow, but I have noticed in the videos you play a DK, probably the most overpowered class when it came, so explaining balance for you would not be easy, so I will not even try.

I agree with some points – this game actually needed more modes, duels, arena, ctf all the generic ones, because it would have almost any build viable for pvp, since in different modes you need different things, for example you could find that a trap thief can actually be useful in CTF, etc. Arena matches would be too fast? It should take 20 minutes like in wow 2×2 arenas when going healer+dps against same team?

So in conclusion:
1. Game needs more pvp modes
2. Game DOES NOT (!!!) need healers
3. Balance is ok, but still needs work (but not with professions you have mentioned).

But there already is a new pvp mode – its called hardcore mode. You join a tournament as solo and that is it: new 3×5 or 4×5 mode against a premade team from r40-50, while your team consists of 0-20.

Well that is just the lack of imagination, you can take a A4 page, make some kind of table there and after every win put +10-50 mmr points (decide how much by comparing if other team had only 4 players or they were rank 1-10) when you loose simply remove some points, and after a while you will get a rating. I am currently at 2135 mmr.

About the question " was this the major pvp/wvw patch ?" The answer in no, it will come next month – always next month, till you stop asking.

Why make arenas and allow people to duel, that is no fun, there are plenty of mobs added that you can kill over and over again, its vital for e-sport game, as you can see from the development of this game.

This patch literally does absolutely nothing to:

Thief Burst
Guard Bunkers
VERY SLIGHTLY nerfed Ele Bunkers
Warriors Still suck
Engi Turrets still useless
Necro Pets might be ok with buffs? Probs not due to bad AI.

The whole thing they talked about buffed weak builds while managing and scaling back strong builds…where is THAT patch. I’m just appalled.

Last month they didn’t balance anything so two months and we get some haphazard patch that does nothing to address 99% of the problems to class balance.

Slow and steady changes are great when they aren’t once every 1-2 months and the game is closer to balanced than it is to imbalanced. Their game is so brokenly staggered in build effectiveness and uselessness that sweeping changes are completely needed and also why we should have PTR to test such things.

Nope – necro pets that got buffed were jagged horrors, those little useless creatures that only work to hinder necromancer. Most of the patch were fixes for this class, some bugs were reported in beta, so it took them six months to fix them.

The only minion buff was the 80% to blood fiends. Overall the patch was extreamly crappy – almost nothing was done, was this supposed to be the PvP patch? Or am I mixing something up, since I see more updates to pve as usual so during these 6 months pvp players got: 5×5 hotjoin, 2 new maps, 1 map tournament – sure that sounds reasonable in comparison towards numerous instances, world maps, items, etc that pve players got…

Well my competitive gaming was from counter-strike 1.1 (yes the one that only had LAN, but don’t think anyone recalls it) and I have to say that I partially agree with your post. The part that I agree is about the trends in topics (“How is this not OP?!” “When do you finally fix this Anet?!”) and lack of competitive type topics (for example “A new strategy to counter X/Y cap”) and what it shows about the current state of the community.

Although I disagree with your minor point about the complaints for new modes – yes, most of the competitive games that are popular have only one mode, but usually has more modes for wider audience. For cs example: all comp are in de_ maps, that have 2 bombsytes and one team is attacking other is defending and you win either by destroying/defusing syte or killing all the enemies. But the game also has a hostage rescue, deathmatches, FFA, zombie mode, etc. that does not improve the competitive side of the game directly, but indirectly it has a great impact. GW2 Spvp is very basic and there are so many flaws, that I have hard time imagining how they can fulfill the e-sport mmorpg promise in the current state.

Also – why do people nowadays compare many different games to lol? Do you think that if this game was not free it would be as popular as it is now? Since that is the only thing in my opinion that makes it as massively played as it is now.

I don’t understand this…. do you want a super quick ranking system where people reach max rank in under a year and all the titles/ranks mean absolutely nothing?

Currently rank means absolutely nothing – it just shows the amount of time you spend playing, it does not show that you are more skillful it does not show that you are better in any other way.

On the other note, the problem with ranking in this game is that it is not rewarding to get – if they made even a simple change like new armor pops up not every 10 levels, but lets say every second level there would be more incentive for people to get new rank. Now when you reach the X0 lvl and spend all the currency (probably not all if you are 20+rank or even lower) you stacked up during this long farm to get all new items it does not feel rewarding, because you know that the next 10 levels would be even longer and more tedious and the items you obtained are either the ones you were planning to get for your character and there is no reason to go further or they look like crap thus making this grinding experience even duller.

I have no idea how could a game with such a great potential make so many wrong turns. This topic perfectly illustrates one of it – creating all the races in a quite similar size would have made this game not only easier for the players to notice animations, but also for the spectator or the viewer to understand what is happening, that is quite important for a game that SAID to aim towards being an esport. But as we see that one races has a big advantage since they are 50% size from the medium sized models (humans and sylvari) and even smaller in comparison to the large models (norns).

Do not give that bullsh.. about the hitboxes being the same size – it is not the issue, this game is not counter-strike, you do not need to aim to the hitbox heads, but you do need to see what the enemy is doing to be able to counter it so the harder it is to spot your animations the bigger advantage you have. Because of this there is always a benefit to choose the smallest class for pvp in an mmorpg – in wow there were gnomes, here there are asuras. The only difference is that wow was not aimed towards being an esport pvp mmorpg so they can get away with many things in pvp, while it should not be so in gw2.

My solution to this problem is going quake 3 route: there were also models that were harder to spot in this game (for example Bones – brown skeleton model that merges a lot better in some maps with wall textures) so in tournaments, and later in public servers all the enemies looked like one model – Tank Jr. green if I am not mistaken. I have no idea if coding it would be even possible in this game, but force enemy model to become human from your point of view would be a win-win situation.

Personally, my play style in every MMO I ever played (SWG, SWTOR, Warhammer) was dedicated healer/some damage.

I dont think 1v1 2v2 is an appropriate mode for a mmorpg..at least for a successful mmorpg.. We wouldn’t have fun with that.. It’s no sense!

There is no combo build combo class build work, strategy work.. stop asking those ridiculous questions..

kittenhat is some bold statement, or either you count yourself as many, many people, since more modes would actually ATTRACT more people then discourage to leave, since you know, then you could have more modes to choose from and play ones you like, not the 1 that is available.

1×1 IS the most fun I have currently in this game, since it is so interesting to fight with these mechanics in duels.

Actually cs had the same option of playing with your friends as gw2 has – you could theoretically switch teams when enemy had a -1 member there, but you can do the same in gw2 press B press + and leave the team you currently are to the team your friend is playing also more and more public servers forced you to join the team in “auto assign” that is what we have here in gw2 for similar reasons – to not demolish other team if few coordinated members join one team. Also since I usually play with 3 of my friends there is almost no chance that the team would get a -3 people in public, same goes in gw2.

Yes last part is my opinion – I imagine the problems this implementation would cause, since on how many “friends” stacking do you put a cap? If 1 then people with more friends could start complaining, if unlimited then I promise you: there would be “teams” aimed just to farm randoms in hotjoin and get as much glory as possible.

Also these topics are meaningless – there was no development for pvp at all during these 5 or 6 months, so I seriously doubt that anything new would be implemented. They promised such basic things as some kind of wonder (like ranking/ladder for example) that it perfectly shows the competence in pvp development.

P.S. Just had an interesting solution to this problem – they could create new modes for lesser amount of people (2×2/3×3) that would keep hotjoins intact and you should not need +4 people to start something more competitive. But in this speed of development I would guess that these kind of thing will probably be implemented in 2018.

Well first of all I enjoy playing with my friends, but playing together is not equal to being in one team – it is as fun for me in killing them as it is fun getting kills together. Also let me repeat my statement “…stop using MOBA as an example, these games are two different genres, so why not use CS then?”

“Only thing that matter is ability to play with friends. " One of the main things that matters to me in pvp is getting better than my opponents and defeating them, thus creating a feeling of “fun” which is a second main thing to me.

It would be insane if they allowed parties to join hotjoin – even 2 people that use voicechat and strategies in 5×5 hotjoin can make a huge impact, not to mention if you join as 5 people. When I play with my friends in hotjoin we try to spread in both teams to make it challenging for all of us, since I never understood the point in going as a team to farm randoms at public servers.

So in short – things like party joining to hotjoins should not (and probably will not if devs have any kind of sense) be implemented.

Also stop using MOBA as an example, these games are two different genres, so why not use CS then?

Well if you want scoring I’d stick to necro (condition) – aoe attacks give you more points when enemies die, since you “tagged” all of them in point fight. I get ~300-400 points a match, but only play 5×5 you can probably reach more if you can bare 8×8.

Why hate thieves? They are probably my favorite enemies, especially ones that read in the forum how OP that class is and in reality have no idea what they are doing, just start pressing hs and do no dmg – free frags : )

Why would anyone need duels? Well first of all it is very fun to fight 1×1, second you can learn a lot more about other class this way and how to counter it, thirdly it is a great activity while waiting for queues for tournaments to pass, etc.

I have no idea why was it not implemented at the beginning. Yes you can duel by going to an empty server with a friend, but:

A) Someone can always come and interfere
B) You might want to duel more various people, not only your friends
C) Why should there be so much work involved in dueling – go to the npc, find an empty server, log in, wait for your friend to log in, since it is capricon you need to run towards some place that you agreed to (its usually cannon for me), then either start count or rdy? yes, and only then you can start a duel (?). Why is it not /duel + enter, 3 2 1 – start the duel?

You enjoy challange, yet you played DK ? : ) But that is another topic, I would suggest going mesmer, in my opinion they are more useful for tpvp team (portal/time warp) in comparison to a thief. And also has a great burst capabilities.

I really enjoyed playing my necromancer, but from these two options I would choose a thief, since he is more of high risk/reward and in hotjoins there is almost no risk, just burst nabs with no stunbreakers or blocks.

First of all, WvW is not spvp (would not call it pvp at all, since hitting doors and killing mob lords are more of a pve trait) – you can notice that for example thief cloak and dagger skill when it got 33% reduce in spvp it did not effect wvw at all, thus even in developers opinion wvw =/ spvp.

Farming gear in wow was implemented so you had to pay a lot of money for blizzard, and blizzard likes their $$$. It was not there to make your character feel your own, only to waste time and reward you for doing it by giving an advantage towards people who do not waste time.

“You can’t just jump into a game and think you’re going to wipe the floor with your so called ‘’skills’” Why not? For example if I researched the game, learnt everything about my class and other classes via youtube, guides, forum etc., and I had experience in this type of combat mechanic and controls why shouldn’t I wipe floor with someone who has no similar knowledge, but grinded PvE mobs all month or banged doors in wvw?

“… and people want to farm for their gear as long as it’s fun to do.” Speak for yourself – farming gear is a waste of time and is always boring, it is infuriating when farming gives you an advantage so you have to do that to have equal grounds where only skill wins. In gw2 thank god they understood that and left the boring part out at least in spvp, only skill part is left.

Also don’t put ladder system in this argument, it has nothing to do with gear progression – if done correctly it actually shows the opposite, how your skill is progressing in comparison to other players.

Not what I said. I’m quite ok with everyone having equal gear.

Give me a set of gear on my character that I can equip to PvP with and I’d be fine with it.

You are ok with everyone having equal gear but still you want to have some special gear for yourself? I don’t understand.

I actually like the seperation. PvE bores me to hell and having to farm PvE to get proper gear for PvP would repell me from any game. I hated that so much. Just because some kiddies have all day to farm stuff would mean they could kick my kitten no matter who is the better player. I do like the competetive aspect a lot, being able to take your PvE gear to PvP would ruin this.

If you would like to have nicer looking gear, do more PvP and the higher your rank the better the gear looks you can acquire.

Totally agree – there is nothing more boring than killing same programmed mobs that always act the same and more infuriating to have to do that because otherwise you have a huge disadvantage in fighting people.

So by coming into the game from the given gw2 info you would have known:

A) There are no healer classes
B) In spvp everyone has the same gear

So you have created a topic stating, that you do not like pve since you cannot play a healer, and you do not like pvp since you cant have gear that gives you an advantage over other players. Interesting…
