Prior to buffs… gw1 eles we’re hardly used unless they were a specific (and actually great build)
Searing Flames and Savannah Heat went out of meta (even for PvE since SF was energy intensive).
HM foes had increased elemental armor up until the HM ele overhaul where eles were made a lot more viable.
Sandstorm had been nerfed, although there was shockwave and Stone Sheath for a while
Air does make good “blind bots” though
The main difference is that the GW1 Ele functioned as the “mage” archetype at its core unless you had a different build in mind. They only used (MOST of the time) one main element although there are exceptions like Master of Magic and Elemental Attunement now.
Air was the single target spike damage.
Fire was the AoE damage
Earth was tanky/disruption type (think unsteady ground, the elite) with some AoE
Water was the snaring, sometimes spikey, damage and used mainly to hinder enemies like Blurred Vision and Freezing Gust.
Now in GW2 Eles “stance dance” to several attunements (unless you like to spam lava font + fireball) and the elements are a but different now…
Fire is still mainly AoE damage but can now do extreme spike damage
Air is still mainly single target, but can also control now like Swirling Winds, Updraft, static field (air was 99% lightning in gw1, gw2 is now like 85% lighting 15% wind)
Earth now deals more condition damage while still being able to knock back.
Water can now heal… which was the strangest twist for eles
PvP eles mainly focused on Water and Air because of blind spam or snare spam with the occasional pressure maker from Mind Blast eles. BUT since an important class (aka the bane of every class) went through an extreme change (Mesmers), there is less to worry.
Mesmers could totally shut down an ele (or any class) if given the opportunity because interrupts (caused energy to be wasted and skills to go on full CD… I’m looking at you gw1 meteor shower)… punish spell casting… and a lot more sinister things
TLDR;
Ganeplay has changed and with it, most of the Gw1 elementalist mechanics. For better or worse

I did a good mix of PvE and WvW then got bored of PvE
So at that time, I only logged for WvW + dailies then I got exhausted from WvW so I did almost pure PvE with minimal WvW
then I got bored of PVE so I tried sPvP and had a blast until I got r20 (I’m still going for tiger!)
Now I have a good mix of PvE, WvW and SPvP while trying for a legendary (only need precursor and runestones to go!)

When I was young(er) I used to make so much female characters…. and it’s not because they looked “hot” it was just cool to me that I can play as another gender.
But as I grew I up, I realized that female characters weren’t for me. Now I have 6 males and 1 female (although 2 males are mules for inventory space…)
I don’t think I can ever have a main that’s female now. An alt sure but not main. Now I think of my main as an extension to myself, kind of like an alter ego. He has the name I would like in real life, the color eyes etc… to me, it’s so fun building another “me” where I can set his characteristics. I could never imagine myself as female because… well I’m not one

I don’t think anyone hates Scarlet. She’s just despised by the community because she’s plain, boring and predictable. Almost as if she is a one dimensional paper about how to make a villain.
A mix between krait and NM court? Scarlet!
After toxic alliance it will be…
Alliance between bandits and Oakhearts? Scarlet!
Alliance between Arctodus and inquest? Scarlet!
Alliance between sons of Svanir and Renegades? Scarlet!
A mysterious alliance with unknown origins appea… Scarlet!
Also, according to some of the people from the Lore community, she seems to be a big lore breaker

So is anyone else thinking this Living Story update is focusing mainly on the Mesmer?
Kasmeer is a mesmer, the tower was veiled by a mesmer enchantment, hallucinations are part of a Mesmer’s lore and fighting style.
They did it with the Winds of Change boss in gw1 where they gave us a “sample” of the Mesmer for gw2…
Do you think we’ll get a skill that causes hallucinations? (Like change screen colors)

I’m pretty sure Mesmers had more hexes in GW1 than any other class. I like how you use the common, non-GW definition of hexes, and the common, non-GW definition of necromancers to claim that they are the masters of hexes. When all your assumptions are flawed, you conclusion is going to be flawed too. Try again.
Snip
I’m ending this right now because you keep derailing the purpose of the thread.
1 DON’T insult people and imply stupidity, it shows the kind of person you are.
2 If “curses” are already in gw2 then it’s more of an excuse to give hexes to Mesmers
3 Stop your flawed logic of irl hex=ingame hex
4 Phantasms are suppose to be replacement of hexes, but you and I both know that the Mesmer class was basically replaced by a magical duelist with illusion tricks and little hex punishments.
On topic, I suggested something with the preparations replacing pets if you choose to stow them.
Like for example
F1 Apply Poison: apply poison every on the third strike of your weapon
F2 Barbed Weaponry (barbed arrows from gw1): Has an X% chance to bleed every hit
F3 Splintered preparation (splinter shot from gw1): For every 4 hits, you cause an aoe damage for x amount
F4 Kindled Weapons (kindle arrows from gw1): your hits cause burning and inflict extra x damage for 10 seconds (has a cd of 40s)
With F4 being the exemption, preparations should be permanent until a pet comes out and you can only have 1 prep at a time.
If they added this and made my ranger less if a pokemon trainer I would love it

Was running 0/20/20/0/30; there are tons of builds and discussions on the forums, but I haven’t seen a single IP.
If you mean a standard confusion bomb build, then that has never really been effective.
You can’t be serious. Maybe not in spvp, but in wvw shatter confusion and glamour confusion specs were so strong that they were hit with some of the hardest nerfs in wvw balance history.
Glamour != confusion bomb.
Confusion bomb shatter builds have always been absolutely abysmal, even before the nerf. They have 0 pressure and can be countered by the complicated method known as /dance.
Flat out wrong. Shatter confusion builds were insanely effective pre-nerf. Maybe you were playing pve?
Prenerf confusion shatter specs were a instant and easy win against anything but condi removal spec thieves. While the nerf sucks, confusion was super strong prenerf.
Yes I believe there is a video of an extremely skilled Mesmer who did both 10/30/0/30 shatter and a confusion shatter bomb with scepter. He constantly solod some zergs and did 1v3s but that was pre nerf confusion and it was arounf 4-6 months after release. Regardless he was a great Mesmer but I had forgotten his name.
Also shatter and confusion shatter bombs didn’t (and still don’t really) contribute to a zerg vs zerg match so it was mostly for roaming

Snip
Woah there no need to be aggressive
I can tell you right now Hexes are more important to Mesmers then they are to Necros I gw1
Curses was an attribute devoted to hexes that’s true but there were little for Death Magic and Blood.
Hexes for Mesmers include Ilusion Magic AND domination magic
Illusion:
Clumsiness type hex
Shrinking Armor
Degeneration
Phantom of Pain
Slow hexes
Cast time hexes
Domination:
Umm…. this line is almost devoted straight up for hexes along with interrupts and and over all punisment and frustration
Inspiration:
Energy denying hexes like ether phantom and Ether lord
Even FC had that quickness type hex
Necromancers?
Curses:
Like domination, this line is meant for punish hexes
Blood:
I can’t remember one right now
Death:
All the different biles\ 1 miasma and a zombie esque hex
And Necromancers have things Mesmers didn’t really get unless they dual proffesioned to a wacky build. Conditons and life steal and minions (there were no clones in gw1)
So please, if you’re gonnna tell me that Hexes were more important to Necromancers then show more evidence

My hairstyle and clothes from Aion ;(
I use that hairstyle in real life ever since I’ve started watching Ghost Adventures in 2009
I don’t wear those clothes though. I’m always wearing a hoodie jacket
I dub you Tintin.
My hair is dark almost black in real life
. That character from Aion is almost a complete contrast in colors to me
But I would really like casual clothes like the GW2 t shirt that was available through special means (like the Mr Sparkle mini)
Right now the only thing close I can get to is human male town cloths + hoodie (which are sleeveless for some random reason) or the fitted casual “shirt” that looks like a jacket more

Current meta discourages Shatter build as they have little condition control and unless you carry idisenchante or null field / mantra then phantasm builds are also discouraged.
On a side note PU is popular because they inflict conditions while having multiple defenses. Stealth + PU boons + clones and condition cleanses through : Lyssa runes if you use it for MI, torch trait and a possible utility because the build can make room for it.

I wouldn’t say that. In GW1 there were three main populations of hydras that we saw, one in Ascalon, one in the Crystal Desert, and one in the Ring of Fire. All we can really say is that the Ascalonian ones are gone, but one out of three does not qualify as a species vanishing.
EDIT: That said, the Covington achievement was still a horrible tease.
Well if you read my whole post (which wasn’t a lot really) you would see that I noted both Crystal Desert and Ring of Fire
Should have just put in "where are Ascalon Hydras? "
They seemed dinosaurish to me.

Lucky for me though, I have a level 80 human female Necromancer
and they do look beautiful on the girls

I’m sure there are many games that have defenseless looking (girls) people that are dragons…
I known for sure Aion has Tiamat who is essentially a “big bad” and their equivalent of an Elder Dragon (except more draconic than crystal\bone\ice)
Plot seems bland and like someone pointed this would destroy lore. Also dragons are suppose to be forces of nature and should only have “primitive” emotions (with Jormag that seems to be an exception) like Zhaitan roaring in fear
Also no offense, but this sounds like a pretty awkward and cheesy situation, even if ANet managed to write the dialog “epic”

They have lancers that charge and knock back
Tramplers that knock down
Wolves that knock down
Not really a problem anymore…. but whenever I get v the chance to kill a centaur (especially on my human characters) I jump on their bodies.
Mainly a problem in Harathi Hinterlands, though only my lowbie alts go their now.

GW1 monks have got to be one of the hardest healing roles in PvP.
Watch for diversion, weapon swap for a quick WoH, hide energy from the Mesmer, swap to shield then quickly to prot staff for Guardian.
I remember doing all that, moving and learning to cancel skills when needed (like mid cast Diversion)
I miss it… but it’s not needed here. I like not being the pillow people fall to when they get hurt. GW2 offers me to support while helping DPS and it feels good to not “red bar” (although prot monks were more proactive)

I wish they would have a permanent stow for pets like everyone has been saying
For almost a year now, my ranger has been iny dust shelf.
Perhaps instead of a DPS increase another mechanic is introduced to outweigh the loss of a pet?
Someone brought up preparations which were a huge thing in gw1 (and more important than pets)
Perhaps it can be like, stow a pet and your f1 f2 f3 f4 become…
Apply Poison: every 2-3 hits target is poisoned for x seconds..
Barbed Weaponry (a play on gw1 Barbed Arrows): for every x hits target bleeds for x seconds
Splinter Attacks: there is a 25% chance that nearby foes receive x damage
Kindled Weapons: for every 3 attacks, target burns for x seconds and suffer x damage
Could also delete\merge pet traits and make it so the pet trait tree shares some traits with the new mechanic (even though it was Wilderness Survival in gw1)

Well I have 1m+ Karma, and I think this Karma nerf is way over the top.
I knew they would nerf Karma sooner or later, so I decided to stockpile it and restrain myself from not spending anything (and rather spend my WvW badges/Gold on Exotic armor/gear)
I’m on the good side, and have bought my Obsidian shards months and months (I think 5 months) before the nerf to Karma.
Have my condolences though
I would think Champion farming in either Queensdale or Frostgorge would be a good karma bank, since you get karma drops (like 120) from the chests. If you go to Queensdale, double karma since you have chance at getting Karma sips and the karma reward from the event (except spider). I don’t think Frostgorge champion train has events (except for Drake? or Quaggan?)

I think by dark, you mean like ‘morbidity’ and ‘unfriendly’ ?
If so, I agree.
Orr has a more WARZONE like environment and less of an uncanny one.
I’m gonna pull a “do you remember in GW1?” here, but…
~Prophecies had Ring of Fire, Searing Ascalon, sometimes the bleakness of the Shiverpeaks (like the Azure Shadows and the Stone Summit + Sorrow’s Furnace)
~Factions had the sewers, the slums, and the overall poverty. Also I would think the Echovald Forest would match, but it’s less of an “everything is dead”, but more of a “frozen” one
~Nightfall had the Desolation, the Realm of Torment ( + Domain of Anguish) and the First City Fahranur.
~Eye of the North is where it loses track. Not really anything morbid or anything to remind you of your mortality here, unless you count some dungeons like the Cathedral of Flames (the old CoF lol)
Here in GW2, I can count only a few times I’ve had this feeling of hostility, and it was the swamps that were filled with Risen (not the Personal Story, because those missions were a little cheezzzzyyy). Not even the Branded caused much hostile feelings.
But who knows? We may be looking back at GW2 when/if GW3 releases in 10000 years and say, “Do you remember how bleak and dark it was when we faced Tequatl?”
edit: I think what I’m describing is a feeling of “This world is going to end, everything is out to kill us” or “Wow this place is really…. crappy. I would not want to be here.”
In gw2, even though the dragons signify the end of life in Tyria, it just doesn’t feel that way

Well the sooner we can kill off the dragons, the sooner we can find out mysteries of GW1 Lore like…..
What happened to the Mursaat/Seers?
When are we going to Cantha?
Are we going to fight the isolationist Emperor in Cantha?
When will we set sail for Elona?
Will we battle Palawa Joko and his zombie empire?
Where did Evennia go?
What is happening to the Maguuma “Wastes”?
When can we go to the Deldrimor Front?
What’s happening to the Ring of Fire?
Where was this “Isle of Janthir?”
Did you think we forgot the Forgotten?
What’s going on in the Underworld/Fissure of Woe?
Why is there a huge forest on top of DR known as “Woodland Cascades?” (which was only accessible through like 3 zones in gw1…)
Seriously, just kill off all the dragons, and fill in the above plot holes… And instead of fighting and continuing the story, we decide to have more festivals?~?~?~?~?~?~

Why all the mesmer hate?
….
Not all mesmers wear and worship purple….
Oh and by the way, the only thing “purple” about Mesmers are their GW1 counterparts. GW2 Mesmers are all about pink and fuchsia (another thing I don’t like about Mesmers (gw1) vs Mesmers (gw2) )
In fact, my Mesmer has all of his main sets (and even town clothes lol….) blue
But, I do agree that they shouldn’t just change Meteorologicus out of pure whim.

Then I have alts too. A thief (my “main” alt) where I switch stealth, boon sharing, glass and condition with
A necro, Ranger, guardian.
