Why I think the first 10-15 levels are better

Malkavian.4516

Shortly after the patch came out, I confess I didn’t like what they did. However, it would seem that given a bit of time, and a hotfix or two, the experience feels alright. And I personally like doing all the story quests in a single chapter in one go as it’s more smoother to do compared to just finishing an episode, levelling a couple of times before you do the next one. However, I can see this being bad for those who prefer the other way as they’d rather do the next episode of the story immediately after finishing their first heart. It’s the fact that the option is not made available at least not as early as it used to be.

I think the more effective compromise would be to have the chapters available but retain the difficulty based on the level (in this case, keep the first story chapters at Level 10) to give players the idea that the option is still there and if they want to do the story missions early they can do so, but expect it to be difficult to pull off if you are not at the desired level.

While I do understand where you are coming from with this, I don’t think it’s gonna work. My reason for it is this: showing the numbers, while it will help in making the game more well-known will also just add more fuel to flame wars amongst MMO fanboys which is the last thing I want to see.

@GrandmaFunk I suppose you could just count the players who are currently online in GW2 including those who go afk right in front of the BLTC or Mystic Forge.

OMG she is beautiful and she makes some interesting points. But WOW 10/10 her bf is one lucky dude.

Everything she says is ruined by her last statement “it’s just kittening videogames” this is such a stupid argument.

Yeah, that coming from someone that makes (or made) a living out of them… well… yeah.

She’s just exploiting her pretty face.

And is that a bad thing how, exactly? Despite the whole “vidya gaems is srs bsns” schtick, and despite our passion for this form of entertainment, we should always keep in mind that video games are still video games.

What I got from that:

-Video game development is a business.
-Players shouldn’t criticize developers.
-Players are really just know-it-alls.
-Developers should give us more stuff.
-Small sized gaming studios should be bigger.

Can I have my 5 minutes back please.

Don’t take it the wrong way, but you got really selective hearing if that’s all you understood about the video. My two cents are this:

1. From the lowly employee all the way up to the top brass in a company, they make video games out of love for the genre (at least initially). It’s just that they are doing what they like to do and getting compensated for it in the process.

2. There are people who think that they can do a better job than the current devs assuming that they do get employed. But what they need to realize is that the devs may have already thought about what those people are thinking and they would think that it’s a good idea as well. But the moment you work for a video game company, seeing those changes exactly as you visioned it realized is never going to be as simple as you are led to believe. In a business, priorities are always set to keep things in order. If employees do whatever they want, despite their good intentions, more often than not, everything would go topsy-turvy. Bottom line is: nothing wrong with criticism but always consider the other side before you say something sucks or that you could do better.

3. It’s not like devs should give more stuff but rather asking the developers to be very very transparent with their player base as effective communication between the two parties can lead to a very strong relationship. Developers could get a more detailed perspective on what the players want in a game and Players, upon getting a fair gist of what the developers are doing would feel a strong sense of engagement and loyalty towards said developer if they feel involved in a game’s creation.

I do agree with you there, Penarddun. Hearts do need to be improved upon rather than cut off certain bits as they are easy enough to accomplish to the point where the fun factor wanes quickly.

Regarding the whole locking of the story mission every 10 levels, I don’t mind it myself as I always have more stuff to do to attain those levels with ease. But I am thinking that instead of locking the story missions, why not just make them more difficult to accomplish if you are not at the ideal level much like before the patch?

It’s obvious most of their resources are devoted to churning out low quality LS content, and leaving WVW/PVP/balancing to rot. As they have.

LS was the worst thing that ever happened to this game.

That’s your opinion.

Anyway, I recall that there have been frequent hotfixes and patches done last week since the Feature Patch came. That’s a start, right?

They are aware of the issue based on this thread right here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Changes-Coming-to-the-NPE/first

Now the last update I got from Chris was that they are still working on how to address this problem. While I do like the fact that they are working on it, I feel down by the fact that it’s taking longer than necessary to restore what was once there. Although a part of me is thinking that they are adding stuff to the game that would patch the plotholes caused by the realignment if they the developers are discussing this in meetings. If so, I would say it would be fine if we know what would be added to make “getting over it” very easy and at the same time I would say no because I have a feeling that doing so may damage the story even further if not handled effectively. The original Personal Story was flawed, that’s a given. But I’d prefer the original over the new realignment any day because of the fact that it was there on final release. That would be like changing the level order in a single player game post-release.

Not really QQing here (or maybe I am) but I am from the NSP server and last week we contended against Stormbluff Isle and Yak’s Bend. Now that’s over with, we are now contending against Dragonbrand and Yak’s Bend (again?). Now, don’t get me wrong. I personally do not have that much of an issue with WvW as I am no hardcore player of that mode, but I would like to say facing off against the same server again can just be flatout frustrating. I’d suggest that after facing a particular server on the current week, when matchmaking against other servers, do not include the server that we just faced until say, next week perhaps? That way, the players like myself would feel like starting fresh when hitting it off in Eternal Battlegrounds.

I am hoping against hope that this gets fixed before Mad King Day. It would kill me to miss that event, but I’m trying my best to not log-in until the story is repaired.

As Mad King Day content will be live pretty soon, and as the team is probably scrambling to get that ready at the moment, it’s probably not looking too good that they can fix this on that timetable.

That being said, I still have faith that their dedication to fixing plot holes and inconsistencies means that they will be putting the Greatest Fear arc back in. Not doing so would leave the plot very confusing.

Assuming they stick to the current order of the story, I’d at least expect the Greatest Fear arcs to be playable once again along with adding some new scenes to effectively tie the chapters together. It would require the VAs to be back though to do new lines but if they can’t pull it off that way, then the smartest thing would be to revert the story chapters back.

If the general issue was that “the later chapters do not focus on you, the Commander all that much but with Trahearne with his Wyld Hunt and all”, cutting the Greatest Fear plotline that was the most personalized plot since you joined an Order, was the most counter-productive reaction to an issue that I have seen for some time.

Like I said, I don’t think that this was cut out on purpose. If it was, then the wiki should either reflect that change along with an official statement on the preview blog for the Feature Patch indicating that certain parts will be removed. Even the patch notes clearly say that they are just changing the order of chapters here and not deleting anything. If I recall the files related to the unplayable quests are still present. It’s just that but rearranging the story, it could have resulted in continuity issues.

But how is it that a huge hunk of the story could be cut on accident?

My guess is that Anet didn’t reorganize the story quests individually but rather by chapters. If that’s what they did, there would likely be a snag on certain missions that are supposed to be accessible. That’s what I think at least.

uhmm………. 0 people supporting this thread isn’t looking good.

LS2 is completely different from LS and much much better but still is really bad.
It’s like they started from -50 and manged to reach 23 on a scale of 100.

The story is flat and a bad copy from Eye of the North like Zaithan was.
Only difference to Zaithan is that they even tried to make something happen.
At least you kind had a journey to get the group together.

This LS is like clicking through text boxes until boss fight.
They could even get something out of this flat story but it’s actually the whole presentation that destroys everything.

Building an epic sword by dumpster diving to get the parts is kinda insulting.
Instead of an epic journey to find the parts in ancient parts of the world we dig in rubble right beside regular houses….. awesome.
Followed by my absolute favorite the summoning:
Me: Please help us defeat the Dragon
Jennah: But what about my people ???
Me: Dragons are really bad
Jeannah: Good point, i’m in.

This reminds me of a low quality porn movie dialoque……….

And it’s not just that it’s so many different things that leaves you behind thinking
that they absolutely don’t care and someone was actually forced against his will to create a living story…….. no love, no detail and absolutely zero fun.

I personally expect better writing if they are going to go with that approach. But for what I got, I was quite happy. Not satisfied, but happy.

Is it a tactical error? Did people, on the whole, like the personal story more? I don’t think so. Guild Wars 1 had very popular PvE but it was the same thing over and over.

Personally I would prefer Personal Story than doing the same events over and over and over. Personal Story is somewhat unique for each character, events are repetitive even though dynamic. Personal Story gives you a sense you are progressing on something, events are more like chores you do everyday, like gardening. They are fun, but it’s just more of the same after a while and almost equal to everyone. I wouldn’t say to take off events, but also I wouldn’t say they are what draws attention most. Events are good for group action and sociability, Personal Story is more for unique moments where you want solo (or with a friend only) or do things at your pace.

I definitely agree. In fact, that’s the reason why I bought Guild Wars 2 in the first place. The Personal Story wasn’t perfect but I felt like I give a kitten about the things going on in Tyria. Otherwise, I’d just be mindlessly killing mobs all by my lonesome for a few months and move on to another MMO. It can be the same thing over and over but for me, I don’t mind going through the same story again and again as long as I enjoy myself.

Been thinking about the Prestige Mesmer (I’d call him the Madman). He’d probably emphasize on disillusioning his enemies like how the Toxic monsters do it with Hallucination. From the enemy’s POV, he’d see a brief acid trip of a screen plus he’d fight random shadowy monsters. He could also briefly control enemies manually as an Elite skill for a brief moment to access their skills and use those against them. Could probably work in PvP as well to disorient teamwork. Either that or have the madmen have their own version of the Polymorph spell turning enemies into bunnies giving them a vulnerability stack of at least 5 and at the same time limiting their attacks.

I simply don’t understand why they would do this at all.

I think I read somewhere that the original format made the final chapters too long, but why is that a problem? Since when is more content a problem?

Maybe they were concerned that people would level exclusively on the story, and not by exploring the Orrian areas? Just tweak the experience points you get from each mission, problem solved. I truly don’t get this.

I find it hard to accept that it’s the chinese censor thing as well, but that could well be the case. I just don’t know.

Someone really should be transparent and upfront about this, is that too much to ask?

Well, the thing about transparency is that it’s a double-edged sword. Say too little and we would constantly speculate things that may or may not be true. Say too much and we’d likely react negatively as we have a tendency of nitpicking whatever words come out of their mouths. Transparency is nice and all, but sometimes being careful on when to talk is gonna be the lesser evil to lessen the chances of an even greater outrage on forums.

Either way though, my theory is that the people have greatly complained about the Personal Story in which the later chapters do not focus on you, the Commander all that much but with Trahearne with his Wyld Hunt and all. I’d guess this is meant to address that problem. I never had an issue with the Personal Story myself despite the noticeable flaws it had later on, but I’d rather have it back to the way it was.

I have now reached L70 on my thief and my greatest fear has come true, I’m at that moment in the Personal Story, and after so much time, still utter silence from the devs.

I wish there was a way to turn off that green star icon. It feels like a slap in the face each time my eyes wander over at it.

Because I’m just going to ignore the story from this point on, I refuse to go through it.

I feel insulted.

By the silence, and by the cavalier way in which the story was mutilated, turning something which was fine into a sub par product at best, for which this company then has the nerve to ask me to spend some more money on.

To that I say no.

I will not be spending any more money on an inferior product, for this is what Arenanet has chosen to give us at this time. Anyone with a critic mind can see it.

The only reason they still have my traffic is because I still have a friend left in game. Yes one, all others have left.

Arenanet needs to define itself, and it will do so by it’s actions, and by the way in which it communicates with their player base.

Either it is still the company that made the game that I love, or it has just become another uncaring corporate money sucking machine.

Either way, it’s not going to be my money that they suck. All I’m willing to give right now is time, and that is running out.

If you have seen the last update Chris had which I think was on the closed “Communicating with You” or the thread made by Gaile regarding the NPE, you should know that they are working on how to address this as the removing of various story chapters was not part of the plan when they intended to rearrange the last 2 chapters. I am as kittened off as you are regarding this, but despite all this, I am at least assured that they are working on it along with other bug fixes related to this feature patch.

What i gathered from the Things to Come Blog post is that SAB is not being released again anytime soon and they dont have a schedule for it now. Evne though it might not be what you have hoped for, but it was adressed.
As you mentioned, the Traits Topic went out of line a long time ago. Either someone is willing to put in an effort and summarize that monster in a new thread or not.
I honestly dont know what a dev could post in there to make the situation a bit better, unless they have definite trait changes on the horizon.
They mentioned many times they read threads but not always comment, so i would assume that the good feedback and suggestions went trough and will be considered next time they overhaul traits.

Both issues can be (semi) solved by explaining the reasoning behind them.

With SAB, the best explanation for why they haven’t turned it back on is “because it doesn’t fit with the Living Story”. Do I even need to defend why that hasn’t been accepted as a good explanation? If they have a reason not to turn at least W1 and W2 back on, then the customers who paid real money for infinite continue coins deserve an explanation as to why. It’s been a year now.

With traits, the reasoning we got was to do with encouraging build experimentation and giving a sense of progression. I haven’t seen anyone who didn’t consider the update to do the exact opposite of encouraging build experimentation, and many are frustrated by the way in which the “progression” was implemented. The explanation simply doesn’t make sense, and no one has taken the time to clarify what the reasoning was.

In both instances, the coding for a solution is done. SAB already exists, and the trait system was (much) better in March than it is now. If they don’t have the ability to turn SAB on for some reason, or revert (or at least account bound) the trait unlocks, then a simple explanation as to why would be huge progress.

As it stands, the game was made much worse for many people (and to my knowledge, no better for anyone other than those who don’t want others to play SAB for some reason) and six to twelve months later we have no indication as to why.

Personally, they aren’t saying anything about not bringing back SAB anymore because I know for a fact that they will given enough time. I’d say this would be used as filler content around the end of Season 2 I would expect.

Third Soldier Class

Malkavian.4516

Personally, I would love a heavy class that uses water weapons on land.

Spear:
Direct damage, Immoblize, Cripple. Melee but extended range (130->195)
Harpoon Gun:
Pulling and general CC. High range (1200).
Trident:
Conditions, similarly themed to Elementalist. Medium range (900).

The class mechanic could potentially be a mana bar (since no class in GW2 uses one), that would work similarly to a mix between Warrior’s adrenaline, Necro’s life force and Thief’s initiative, allowing the use of four extra skills (F1-F4) only after the bar has been sufficiently filled by using skills 0-9 from the skillbar that inflict CC.

The bar could fill up faster when a CC skill is resisted, for example when dealing with Defiant on bosses or when facing players with Stabilty in PvP, and subsequently the F1-F4 skills would be used to counter and punish CC resistance.

This would be hard to balance, but create a whole new dynamic… unfortunately, it also defines an actual role, which is forbidden in this game. :P

And we will call that class…. Aquaman.

If there is a significant difference in stats, I can see that happening. Though I mentioned that the difference would just be limited to new skills but the stats would be higher by 5-10 points, which wouldn’t really be a significant difference I would say.

3. Elementalist = Thaumaturge

Just throwing this in here, but Thaumaturge doesn’t actually fit here at all. A Thaumaturge is someone who has control over both spiritual (holy) magic and arcane (dark/worldly) magic.

Elementalists have a flavor of arcane, but they really don’t represent the holy magic in any way, and that’s a pretty important part of a thaumaturge, that crossing of the lines between two disciplines.

EDIT: And, even in real world terminology, it appears that the Thaumaturge still has that intrinsic link to the divine:

4. Engineer = Geneticist

From what I can find about Thaumaturge, they are more miracle workers, which to me would mean healers. Healing is only part of what Elementalists do. It would be much more fitting for a straight healing class.

Why Geneticist? Engineers are tinkerers and inventors not people that manipulate genes.

I thought of the word Thaumaturgy from the books Shadowrun and Vampire the Masquerade, basically their terms for blood magic. I’d envision them to use their own HP to reset cooldown timers to 0 for constant combinations of spells.

As for Geneticist, I’ve always thought of Engineers as people who breathe life into their machines with their turrets and stuff and they could take it one step further by experimenting similar principles in a biological field. It’s either Geneticist or Alchemist and I chose Geneticist because it’s much cooler.

There are those who want to have new classes in GW2. But considering that we have every role filled out for light, medium and heavy armor types, I suggest that we upgrade the classes in a similar fashion as Ragnarok Online. The classes themselves do not need to be overpowered compared to the originals but they would have flashier moves, access to certain weapons that would otherwise be unavailable to them and so on. To access them, there would be quests that are class exclusive (say, speak to a Profession Trainer) and be triggered at the cost of certain skill points. The quests themselves would naturally have to be very tough to pull off to give players a sense of accomplishment to reflect their prestige class.

Assuming you guys are planning an expansion at some point, I’d suggest you look into this as a possible feature.

Is there any intention of definitively answering the question on whether the massive chunks removed, and the jumbling up of other portions of the personal story is a bug -that will be fixed- or it is intentional and will remain. (I have characters part way through the story and need to know whether to hold off completing or not)

The way these changes have been made seem to me to be a way of fast-tracking the personal story to get people to level 80 and endgame dungeons as fast as possible.

To me, the richness of the lore and the world created in Guild Wars 2 has always been what sets it apart from many of the other games out there, and for all this to be removed is a big disappointment.

I would like to be able to play this game for far more than just accumulating gold to build a Legendary.

To my knowledge, they are working on addressing the plotholes that were brought up since the rearrangement. My guess is either they will stick to the current arrangement and add stuff to tie them in OR revert back to the original arrangement (I vote for bringing it back to what it once was as I imagine it’s going to be less difficult)

One thing I do not understand about some people who demand this game have endgame is exactly what type of endgame do they want to have and why do they want it to begin with? People may go deaf when I say this but I always make my own endgame in practically any game I play. If I don’t like to do dungeons, I go PvP. If not, then WvW, if not, Legendary crafting.

endgame is something that requires you to use all of what you have/earned built in order to succeed. It generally seeks to let you push or test your limits.

For example, in basketball, you spend a lot of time learning basics, how to shoot, how to dribble, how to pass. Special combinations of this, increasing your accuracy and your speed, and then endgame is playing people of equal or greater difficulty.

programming, you learn a language, learn the rules, figure how to build something complex from a simple set of instructions, and then endgame is putting it all together, devising and figuring out how to build something greater from a simple instruction to the complex.

Art: you study anatomy, perspective, composition, color. Endgame is putting it all together into a peice of art.

Note, not everyone achieves the same levels, not everyone beats the game, but striving to achieve, putting everything you ve built to use. It enhances the experience, knowing there is something to aim for, some use for the skills you build up, some benefit for doing it smartly, or fast. Seeing it come together for a result. Many hobby rock climbers may never attempt to climb everest, but they are glad it exists.

What in this game even tries to come close to this? You may have played for 80 levels, and mastered 65 traits, and 40 skills, what in this game makes you use that to succeed? Even when you take it out of straight up skill, what part of the story is the sum total of everything you have done? Explorer? what in this game has used your knowledge and understanding of the map, in interesting ways to succeed at anything?

PVE wise, what in this game is made to make good use of your skills/abilities/knowlegde?

a good game scales well with its players throughout they various levels, allowing them to find their on comfortable zone for endgame.

Well in my case there is the Fractals and WvW for my endgame really.

And people won’t be talking about this for years. They’re be talking about it for weeks, maybe. Already most of the map chatter about it has died down.

That may be because most have already said their piece. Not everyone is compelled to repeat their position in every thread about a topic that they’ve already addressed. I stated my feelings about the NPE in one thread and it is far down on the forum. However, my opinions about the NPE have not changed.

The volume of complaints do mean something. And that a significant of the forum population expressed so much dissatisfaction should not be ignored.

Actually the volume of complaints on forums means absolutely nothing.

Correction: volume of complaints that are uncivil (whines, threats, slanderious) mean nothing as it expresses unsatisfaction from the playerbase with very minimal opportunities to find a solution to remedy the problem leaving the developers to guess on the way to remedy this. And despite them being the devs for this game, keep in mind that they can only think of so much to fix this. I have complained about a Personal Story change here and a few days later, I saw this thread.

Why GW2 just isn't working

Was watching Destiny Review and it reminded me of GW2 for some reason.

Grinding, no content, insane RNG.
Perhaps it’s time for the developers to focus on sandbox MMOs instead of theme park.

I haven’t played Destiny at all, but from what I can tell, to make a legendary you rely solely on luck where we could at least make our legendaries given the dedication plus a bit of luck. As for content, I got enough content in GW2 compared to what I have seen in Destiny although the content this game offers may not be to your liking.

Feedback: Quest Details

You know, outside of RP purposes, I think there are very few instances where players have to talk to NPCs with Hearts on top of their heads before they do a quest. I know this is meant to make heart quests less tedious to play but I have been thinking about this:

Instead of revealing all the details of the heart quest if you are within the heart area, give players the general objective behind the quest and to get more details, you need to speak to the NPC so he/she could tell you more and your quest log will reveal those details afterwards.

I think a referral system would be an excellent idea to bring new people in. Provide a code for someone to be able to play the game for at least a few weeks and give the referrer some kind of reward depending on how the referral progresses.

When it comes to mounts, I’d support them so long as they do not provide any movement speed buffs at all. In other words, purely cosmetic.

I would imagine my character would emit an intoxicating smell.

As for her questions:

1. I could imagine her liking smooth peanut butter.
2. She’d demand her money in smaller denominations as she would like to make her wallet look a little bulgy.
3. Her favorite pizza toppings would be pepperoni only.
4. Boston Terriers are her dog of choice
5. Being a prosecutor, she would go for humanities as it’s part of her profession to analyze the culture of people. Never know when that knowledge could come in handy.

Proposal Overview
An updated GW2 guild messenger client
Goal of Proposal
To provide guild members updates from the guilds they join (representation or not) related to what agendas does the give have in store for a particular date and time as well as a way to chat or send/receive PMs with them be they outside the game or not.
Proposal Functionality
This is based on my experience with Steam and Battle.net’s client where you basically link every game under NCSoft’s or Arenanet’s library to be played under a single client. You can just log in and you don’t need to enter the game to receive messages from your friends/guildmates or even get an alarm for easy reminding.
Associated Risks
1. Assuming that you intend such a client to be exclusive to Anet developed games (in this case every Guild Wars game), then GW1 would need to be updated to be played on that client.
2. Naturally if you are logged off or online, you can’t receive your updates.
3. Some people may find such a feature very intrusive and annoying if there is no such way to disable this feature.

how many dailies should i do/do u do?

Malkavian.4516

It took me a while but I make it a point to do my dailies as diligently as humanly possible. Though accomplishing these dailies is actually easier to do in WvW, especially if you go on edge of the mists so long as you got the movement speed to keep up with the zerg you follow.

I am not sure why you are so concerned about getting as much AP as possible though unless you aim to have your name be placed on the leaderboards.

Cliche for my taste but it’s not bad. I personally would love more hilarious finishers like a giant anvil like you see in Looney Tunes.
