Since you obviously don’t test internally, did you really not notice that pistol whip and other CC were affected and not accommodated?

Learn your own game, please. I can handle not using S/P for a while (if it even gets fixed) but the fact that major changes like this go unnoticed or you just don’t care is quite scary.

This game needs a player test realm, where we can feedback about changes and what it all has affected instead of releasing the patch to the public and letting them suffer while we scratch our heads in awe, simply HOPING that you notice and will take action.

I haven’t seen a reply concerning thief yet, would really appreciate an “ok, we’re working on it” or “this was intended” so I know what to do.

Ok so I just got home and tested PW a bit and it does indeed expire before your sword even makes contact with the target, making the stun nothing more than an interrupt. We definitely need the 1s back to make this damage more reliable, hopefully they hotfix this otherwise no one is going to be using S/P at all.

The headshot daze comes with a (I believe) 4s cooldown on the enemy anyway when interrupting a skill so that isn’t such a big deal imo but also an unnecessary change on duration. I am really hoping ANet did this unintentionally.

Just goes to show they don’t have enough internal testing going on, we should have had a PTR since day 1 so we can report bugs instead of having to suffer through them. It baffles me that a so called triple A MMO doesn’t have these basic features.

Meh boring thief changes, incredibly underwhelming patch notes after 4 months.

To all the bads saying they killed S/P, I never used the para sigil and still play fine. It’s still completely viable, stop crying about it.

Im afraid you aren’t aware on what is being discussed.

Could you enlighten me then? I have no clue if it’s not because of the sigil or rune stun % I didn’t see any nerfs to s/p.


Since beta (possibly alpha but I did not play the alpha) stuns have rounded up to the nearest second. a 0.25 daze = 1 second daze, 0.75 stun = 1 second stun, 1.5s daze = 2s daze. This was nice because you could prevent (if the devs wanted) any scaling with Sigil of paralyzation. For example, Tactical strike was a 2 second daze (as you know), that could be mixed with Sigil of paralyzation or rune of the mesmer to become a 3s daze because again all stuns and dazes round up to the nearest second. In november Anet changed Tactical strike in spvp to 1.5s, since all dazes rounded up it was still a 2 second daze but 1.5 × 1.15 = 1.725 so Tactical strike could no longer round up to 3 seconds in spvp. Pistol whip is a 0.5 second stun, so if you recall what I said before it rounds up to the nearest second, this meant Pistol whip has always been a one second stun. However because of that 0.5 it could never round up to 2 seconds, which was good because a 2s PW is ridiculous.
Now skills do not round to the nearest second, so Pistol whip which has been a 1 second stun since beta is now a 0.5 second stun. Which given you play S/P you know that stun helps to ensure a few hits go in, as well as setting the S/P kit as a whole as one with strong CC. With the stun it’s had since beta halved, S/P can not hold on to targets as well, they break out earlier and can avoid more damage as a result, this makes S/P kill an individual player slower. This also means in a team, it’s harder to take advantage of the window a S/P thief can create, because it’s only half as long.

This doesn’t have anything to do with sigil of paralyzation itself, because if we look sigil of paralyzation never provided S/P any benefit. 0.5s rounded up to 1 second, if you took sigil of paralyzation it was 0.5s x 1.15 = 0.575 which rounds up to…. 1 second. Which meant no matter what Pistol whip was always one second stun and never any longer (so you wouldn’t take SoP for PW because the two did not work together). Now that the change has gone,
PW has half its stun duration to remedy a problem with a sigil (and rune set) that it could not use to begin with.
You can easily check this in game with your stun coming off half as fast.

I don’t know why you feel compelled to throw “bads” it’s straight reality. Take S/P as you’ve known it, and weaken it, that is the reality. S/P is weaker than it was yesterday. Tactical strike is technically 0.5s shorter, PW is 0.5 shorter which is half of it’s duration and headshot is 0.75s shorter. So except for Infiltrator strike all the CC of S/P has decreased. This is fine for headshot given it’s role but you will be feeling the reduced effects of PW as a reduced time before they can escape means more damage that they can mitigate, this is lowering the damage you deal.

I got you man, just figured it was the typical patch QQ you see everywhere, that is a big problem. I guess it’s back to S/D. I’ll test a few S/P games when i get home.

Taking damage brought one out of stealth, unless vanish was just used. Here, we got thieves stealthing, then stealthing right after their first stealth runs out. I guess we all have to spend money to beat a class…

Thieves are squishy and have zero mitigation. Stealth does not make them invulnerable or immortal because they still take damage in stealth. If they didn’t have stealth, the class wouldn’t be able to survive and the profession would be completely useless.

If you think thieves have zero mitigation then you are doing something wrong.

Give us an example.

Black Powder (Avoidance)
Dodge x3 (if you aren’t deep 15 in acro you are also doing it wrong won’t get them)(Avoidance)
Pain Instinctual Response (Avoidance)
Evade from S/P 3 (Avoidance)
Evade from S/D 3 (Avoidance)+ the boon it steals (mitigation depending on boon stolen)
Shortbow 3 (Avoidance)
Teleports from sword 2 and shadowstep which also happen to remove 1 and 3x condi respectively (OMG some mitigation!)
Lyssa runes (not class specific therefore null) with bask venom (CC not mitigation)
All bundles stolen give some form of mitigation – blind,reflect,fear,boons (the only mitigation from stealing is Eat Egg, Drink and Consume Plasma)

We are just missing a reliable form of stability. (besides dagger storm trololo)

Just to be clear, anything that causes you to take less damage would be considered mitigation which includes stuns. So to say or think thief has zero is ridiculous because we have a ton.

Clearly trolling, right? Maybe you should look up the definition of mitigation. I even explained at the end of my post to be clear of what it meant. I mean really, high school drop outs trying to correct me… rofl.

This is definitely an interesting idea. I’m not 100% convinced it’d be good for all maps, but maybe it hints at a new game mode?

I want to add that ideas like this are what we’re looking for. Things that might sound crazy to some, or are outside of the box, are the ones that tend to spark ideas on our end. Of course, we definitely appreciate all kinds of feedback, but it’s great to see new suggestions like this.

Really? I haven’t seen it at all lately, except for hotjoin of course.

A lot of high tiered thieves run D/P and are extremely effective with.
Of course there are a lot of S/D thieves but just because that is a stupid easy to play spec.

I guess I am not high enough tier to face them, I know Caed and others run it, it has insane burst but an extremely unforgiving if you mess up or miss the BS which is common even for the pro players due to the way positioning works when the stab goes off.

That’s the only reason I don’t like to play it, too RNG even when it SHOULD hit imo.

Me and a few pvp buddies 2v2 all the time, it’s incredibly fun.

PS: S/P thief + condi necro beats anything and happy to prove it

If you don’t target the necro, he do all the game !

Thief is just there for CC so you can’t kill the nec anyway.

That’s not to say S/P has no damage though

Problem is it’s the only game mode. So no I don’t get addictive, because doing the same thing after +4k games gets old.

Thieves are ridiculously easy (and fun) to level in PvE, just grab D/D, Shortbow, Caltrops, Signet of Malice, and spam Death Blossom with a bunch of traits that recover initiative/aid condition damage and you’re set.

This or S/P 24/7 blind and evades.

Thief was the easiest class for me to level by far. All other classes feel so sloooooooow.

I run double stunbreak so I have no need for a 3rd utility (for myself), and SR gets rez off a lot of the time in tpvp.

SR grants might stacks? Lol you clearly have no place to talk if you are still playing stealth. L2meta, SR is nothing more than group utility for stealth ganks and rez.

I accept it too Vayne, makes me sad, but nothing can be done unless some hero dev team comes out of the wood works and makes an awesome MMO knowing full well it won’t sell as good as some casual farmville remake. Let’s be real though, it’s always about the money.

When u went to do DoA HM for eg, it was all about energy management and yes there was skill involved but not when you went to City of Torqua, where every enemy had 100% energy denial, which ended up in constant wipes coz monks couldn’t heal/rez you couldn’t use ur skills etc.

I would rather have long CD on some skills b/c it still means i have other skills available for use as opposed to none when u run out of energy.

I didn’t play gw1 pve but usually people were hiding (or at least should be hiding) energy through different weapon sets in gvg/ha.

I doubt most pve players even know hiding energy exists or even bothered having an energy set on hand. It’s easier to fail running a staff 100% of the time and blame faulty mechanics because onoez where did my energy go, mobs must be OP, terrible design! I better keep spamming protective spirit

GW1 was just too hard for the layman that’s why it wasn’t as popular and why GW2 is total faceroll. Gamers these days… it’s not even a matter of being casual or not, everything has to be so accessible and easy a new born could do it.

Personally I would opt for ascended items that don’t have stat boosts, but allow out-of-combat switching of stats. At the moment they seem like a forced grind and I oppose this kind of action.

If they drop the whole grind forever for bigger stat’s mantra and go back to creating more armor skins we can kill bosses or do events for I’ll be happy.

If it ever goes past ascended/legendary grind I really will quit this game forever. Didn’t we leave games like WoW to get a break from all the endless grind?

I like WoW, don’t get me wrong, but because they do vertical progression correctly.

GW2 grind is sloppy and boring, drives me crazy. I just try not to think about it while playing but my willpower is meh when it’s a significant stat upgrade , especially since I do a lot of pve and want every advantage I can get. I just want those advantages to be more skill based instead of time based.

You can say well it’s optional, yeah I guess if you want to be the underdog. I suppose that’s how ANet gets us to grind 24/7, make it optional but also a necessity to a lot of people. The bane of being a competitive player…

In GW1 you infused your armor in optional 1 or 2 missions to fight the mursaat which would damage the hell out of you without it, took like 20 minutes top which was very alt friendly. To see such time gating and grind to do higher level fractals makes me just as sad as this ascended and legendary fiasco.

End the grind ANet, back to your roots. This isn’t fun at all and you aren’t really different than all the other MMOs that pull the same crap. I thought change was one of the biggest selling points of GW2?

It is a totally different experience playing this game on good headphones or surround sound. It’s like the difference between playing call of duty on your TV and then putting on headphones, you realize that footsteps can tell you exactly where the enemies are.

Lornar’s Pass is one of the best for this. (the birds)

Funny, for me the story was atrocious and boring, and the lore has been stuck in a stale state for over a year now.

What I like.. mostly pvp when I can stomach conquest.
Farming occasionally
Permanent achievements
Running stuff with guild

Managing resource like energy wouldn’t be casual enough in GW2.

It’s funny. I had my character set up to rarely have to worry about energy management in GW1. Ele/xxx. Very high energy pool – low energy-cost skills. So, GW2’s skill-management seems familiar to me.

Another case of some people want one of the ‘everything you loved from GW1’, and some people don’t. Lol.

K, mr. pve hero, would love to see your management in a GvG especially on monk.

Sorrow means it’s quite hard to target in big teamfights when u got spirit ranger, a mm, a one more guy and the mesmer. And when u finally target it for burst he can port, stealth etc. But when targetting mesmer on teamfight, I target it myself for the team so they see him all the time and ther eis no problem killing it as its paper.

Ok, maybe 80% was rlly 2much :> but as i said be4, catching mes in teamfight is not a problem for me. When I play necro hes pretty much dead the first second I see him on the team fight Maybe its just me, but very rarely i loose target on mesm, I find it worse to maintain it on stealth thieves.

Mantaining target on thief is as hard as mantaining target on mesmers. It is a problem of stealth itself.
The fact that mesmer generates AI while thief doesn’t makes mesmer harder in some aspects.

What thief are you fighting that still uses stealth anyway?

Mes is a joke class and has no place in pvp until we get a ‘target nearest enemy player’.

Relying on AI to play for you plus confusing the other player with your constant clone spam is just bad gameplay. It has absolutely no place in e-sports.

I’m glad I main a thief though, shortbow takes care of clones in a matter of seconds so I can actually fight the player and not have my screen full of AI clutter.

Because of people like you I haven’t set foot in Frostgorge in months
I won’t join the zerg- so I left.

Have to do that zone sooner or later on my Ranger- I will have to solo everything too because the zerg can’t be bothered running events.

Too bad events are incredibly unrewarding, huh? I like the champ trains, gives me something to do while in queue or when I just want to relax and watch a movie or listen to music gettin some loots.

I’m glad ANet finally let us farm again, even if the loot is still total garbage at least I’m getting small increments of MF I guess…

I do wish events were worth doing though.

Sure it is, lol.

Refuge in a 1v1 or on a point is the mark of a bad thief, the only thing refuge is good for is rezzing someone. I used to use it for myself all the time but it would be on cooldown when it really counted, so it mostly goes unused but it’s invaluable for team fights.

I consider it the same cheese as a paladin using bubble in WoW, it shouldn’t be used selfishly.

ITT, people who probably don’t even main thieves ask for them to be made a carbon copy of WoW.
No thanks. How about try and learn how to deal with a different take on a stealth based class? Thieves at the moment are certainly not far and above the best class for pvp. Others have mentioned, and it’s easy to see ingame that there are many ways to deal with stealth (more are on the way too).

The fact that people would openly advocate revamping thieves to better suit some cliche stereotype is kinda disturbing to me. Please don’t listen to them Anet, continue to practice your creativity in class archetypes.
And you players need to continue practicing, period. Just cause something is different, doesn’t make it OP. Learn to adapt. Not just for your sake, but for the sake of variety in video games.

I main thief, and stealth is screwed in this game. PS: refuge only used when ally is down.

In this somewhat recent interview, Colin Johanson discusses the lack of a PVE skin wardrobe, which they are looking into options to help resolve. He said this will be addressed “at some point.”

The entire interview is worth watching, but this discussion begins at about 21:00.

What was that about when asked the Cantha question? Whoever edited the video didn’t even put in his reply, trying to be funny or something? Really interested on an official answer from Colin concerning Cantha.

If you notice there are a lot of emotes that when you attempt using them nothing in chat will happen, indicating that they may make their way into the game. I’m not sure if /spit is one of them, but a lot of emotes do this and others just say “no such command” or something.

GW1 is a great game, enjoy. I suggest buying all of the campaigns at once, usually some good deals over on steam and such. You get your first HoM points just by connecting all the campaigns to 1 account. Simple and easy.

GW1 is not very noob friendly these days as mobs share skill updates with players, making certain fights very OP and seemingly impossible if you don’t know how to counter them. If you absolutely need help I could come in and steamroll everything with my heroes for you. xD

Although this forum quite dead nowadays these people are very helpful and are happy to assist you ingame http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/

I’m sure if you looked on the WoW forums and looked at what people were saying a about stealth, or any class, you’d find all the same accusations of imbalance and OP.

There hasn’t been an MMORPG created where this hasn’t occurred.

Honestly this doesn’t happen anymore, but true it has a history just as any other MMO using a stealth mechanic. Rogues are more QQ prone to their CC mechanics. Blizz has done a very good job with stealth.

I just wish ANet would make stealth a permanent buff until you take or receive damage and give us 1 or 2 situational vanishes that make you immune to losing stealth from damage for 3 seconds. Other than vanishes, stealth not useable in combat.

Down with stealth spam, bring on the assassin gameplay.

Edit: some arguments I could see coming

1) a bunch of thieves could stealth and gank 1 target for an instant down (already possible, this changes nothing)

2) pve you can stealth past mobs, but how other games did it elite mobs can see through stealth at a close range and regular mobs can see you if you stand to close in front of them.

In WoW rogues are more assassins than anything, they spend 90% of their time out of stealth once combat starts, it’s just a mechanic to open or escape.

As a thief, I disagree with stealth in this game, so much so that I’ve completely dropped it out of my gameplay.

I am unsure as to what you mean by spending money though. The stealth trap? lol

WTB thief stability. The map is completely imbalanced across classes.

You can steal stability. You can port back after being fear/knocked off. You can blind/stealth/scorpion-wire. Thieves are one of the most annoying if played correctly to knock off for a kill.


Gives us the template system that has been mentioned by the devs to be in the works for months now. That will help with skyhammer. Some people are unwilling to make a specific build/character just for one map and swap to it.

Lol steal stability… yea, if you’re lucky enough to see a mesmer and it lasts what 3 seconds with a 1s cast time. Scorpion wire fails 90% of the time for me even on a direct hit with no stability/blocks on target. I gave up trying to cheese play on this map a long time ago, it’s mid top point for me the whole game if I don’t want to be a detriment to my team.

Necro fear is ridiculous with nightmare runes + base fears, shadow step out of one and I’m feared again half a second later. I don’t think I need to touch on how much CC a war has. Ranger LB knockback 1/2s cast is so braindead easy. Borderline impossible to stay on the map, unless I’m doing something wrong?? I’ll keep that stealing stability in mind though! lol. I guess I could also rely on lyssa runes which is a 1s cast on bask that can’t be used while CC’d.

All while trying to survive the billions of conditions that are on me, GG.

How about zaishen keys and when you open the chest you get prompted to choose pve or pvp items.

Or reward us gems, or gold, seriously we need some way to make cash to make pvp rewards appealing as they are in pve.

Can we stop with the whole split between rewards and go back to the friendly GW1 system?

Go attack a regular mob with no might stacks and vuln – your damage isn’t even near that which is showed in the video. I hit the same damage, on any build with 20+ might stacks and vuln.

Not talkin bad about your build, just sayin’.

D/D is already dead and you want to nerf shadow arts? What’s the problem with 2ini gain and 3s condi remove? Not like it helps any vs the condi meta as it is, necro put a thousand conditions on you in literally 2 seconds.

I just don’t understand those 2 specific changes, not like I’d care since shadow arts isn’t viable anyways compared to 10/30/0/30/0 since you need that HP to even fathom surviving the condis, not to mention the ridiculous Last Refuge that kills you 90% of the time.

I’m just saying, SA already sucks, don’t make it suck more.
