Except for the “revealed still has access to stealth” part, not a bad idea. More traits like revealed training which reward aggressive styles of play would be nice. Keep in mind this would be a nerf to healing in stealth and removing conditions in stealth.

Who knows, maybe the new specialization benefits more from being revealed. The Revenant is going to benefit from keeping condis up, maybe shadow arts is going to be replaced with revealed arts.

I think we are very much on the same page :-)

I also strongly dislike Air & Fire sigils … though I use them in some builds because I’m not going to handicap myself. In my opinion, those allow RNG to play too big of a part in a fight. Thief MH Dagger loves this though because it hits so darn quickly.

I agree that the utilities that provide instant stealth with no counterplay could likely be part of the problem. If you Thief could only gain stealth via their interruptible heal or dodgeable/interruptable attacks, I think it would be a completely different story. In fact, the more I think about it the more I think you might be onto something there.

Going back to telegraphs, I was discussing this with a friend last night in TeamSpeak. Given 5 Thieves or 5 Warriors, I’m dead either way, but with the 5 Thieves I have no real chance as I have to anticipate 5 different Thieves’ burst. Against the Warriors I a much better chance of surviving a little bit longer given that I can see their telegraphs and react … I’ll just eventually run out of them and anyone that can’t dodge/block/etc. Warrior attacks is in for a pain train :-p

There’s only 1 non-interruptable, non-dodgeable way though which is blinding powder (Last Refuge by extension). Everything else can be interrupted, knocked out of, or dodged.

I usually hate the engineer bundle on a power build, but love it on a condi build.

The ranger one is awesome against condi rangers specifically. That condition clear is amazing.

Necro fear is pretty good.

Mesmer CP is of my favorite.

Guard one I usually save for non-guards (expect QQ from this though).

Warrior one is especially great if you time it to reflect pin down.

Ice shard is usually the death of eles if you wait for them to rotate out of water.

Thieves are pretty decent cause stealth.

Tldr:

If I remember correctly (maybe he’ll correct me) this build had revealed training.

The build is 2-6-0-0-6 so no revealed, would be crazy to see the damage if he did use it.
Especially because he really knows how to move/evade/shadowstep like a crazy man.

If I remember correctly (maybe he’ll correct me) this build had revealed training. If you watch closely, you can see he’ll start a backstab, then steal (to get revealed), then the BS will land with the extra 200 power. For reference, I’ve hit 8.5k on squishy targets with 50036 when I have full bloodlust stacks. I don’t know his runes or the exact build he’s using, but if you have dagger training, RT, and 5 in power and trickery, you end up with an extra 1.32(with full initiative) multipler on that 200 power boost (which is ~8% in itself). Those multipliers really add to the damage.

You can have extra buttons on mice and gaming keypads as well that make what would seem impossible to do on a regular keyboard (without seriously tying up your fingers) pretty easy.

I don’t think the OP in that thread knew anything about how to fight thieves. I got about halfway through the first page and he says the thief was running S/P +SB, was stealthing continually, and had high condition damage and bleeds.

Oh yeah I doubt it… it just it started to turn into a kitten show after the first page, and even on the first page there were some posts that… well, didn’t help the OP much at all.

Well, I think therein lies the problem. There are a few distinct flavors of thief and when people don’t know how to handle one or two of them they all get lumped under “OP thief.”

While that’s true in most social situation that would happen in real life…
On the forums it’s a bit different. There’s nothing preventing the “immature” person from continuing with their actions and even attacking/provoking those that are “mature”. To add to this, besides those participating in the discussion right now, more can come and go at any time, and typically the amount of “immaturity” will increase. So while you’re trying to have some sort of meaningful discussion the toxic background noise (I don’t think mature/immature is too correct of a term) will continuously increase.

A bit bored of panic strike build

Try D/D 50036 with combined training, vigor on heal and steal traits.
Runes are pack, sigil fire/air.
Pretty solid build, that can deal good burst and have good sustain on top of dodges.
You have lack of CC but good mobility, and nice condi duration+condi dmg (spamming #4 into Throw Gunk is taking turret/parrot engis down so fast)

Hey this is pretty much exactly what I use. It’s a lot of fun.

Have no stealth utilities on your bar and it’s even better.

Thief is my main, S/F ele is my favorite alt. I would recommend the ele because you will virtually always be wanted in parties. I bring my thief only when there is already an ele in the party because they offer such a great party boost with all the fury and might. Thieves are the next best thing to have because they can utilize all that fury and might well.

Both classes are extremely fun in PvP. I am better at thief because I have been playing it a lot longer than ele. Ele is a little higher risk and a little higher reward.

That is what they call Rinse and Repeat> No Skill Required

No skill is still a skill because there’s skill to not using skill to kill so no skill is the best skill.

You can run around pwning people with no skill while they fail at try-harding all the skill they have when they could of just easily put up a better fight by using less skill. If they die to no skill than their skill is not a very good skill. Now you can think about this no skill situation the next time you enter battle with a skilled player and ponder how many times I used the word skill.

Sometimes you gotta step back from the thief and then just come back to it later. Don’t quit it, just take the time to try out a different class and play to that class’s strength, and you’ll discover that anything that makes use of the mechanisms of the class will be called cheese. When I want to relax lately, I break out my warrior because the playstyle is a little less frantic, a lot more sustained, and can deliver a heavy burst when built for it. Easier? Harder? Cheesier? Meh. Different.

My experience from playing my thief, mesmer, and war tonight went like this:

Thief: This is fun
Mesmer:Thieves are so frustrating
Warrior: Why do thieves keep appearing downed in front of me?

In short: whatever you’re not built to handle will always be cheese.

I’m not saying it didn’t “kill the thief class”, but could you please explain “why” or “how” it “killed the thief class”. Simply saying it did that doesn’t give us much we can discuss.

Without direct numbers to see the dropoff, I guess it’s a bit of speculation, but anecdotally, I saw far fewer thieves and they reverted the change very quickly. The only other time I remember them reverting a change is to some of ele’s skills and that took quite a long time to change back. I think it’s safe to say that when they implemented the changes, they saw a significant enough statistical change that it warranted quick reversal, so, while “killed the class” might be somewhat of a hyperbole, it aptly describes why they would take such an immediate step backward.

Maybe one day a net will realize why they changed reveal to last 4 sec in spvp and apply it into wvw.

They did and it killed the thief class, so they reverted it in WvW and PvE a week later. It’s one of the few reverts they’ve ever done.

Thieves really should have no c/d on their weapon swap.

Short Answer: The game cannot handle it.

Long Answer: The server will get bombarded by packet requests that your game play as a Thief will not be satisfactory due to lag and packet loss. Besides, there is no real benefit in swapping other than combining skills across two sets — which you can already do.

You realize you can swap weapons without cooldown when out of combat right? I do it constantly to BP+Clusterbomb. This is the steamiest pile of “trust me, my dad is a computer-maker” bs I’ve ever read.

You realize that swapping out of combat functions very differently while in combat, right? This is the steamiest pile of “i know all about cooldown and why it exist” bs I’ve ever read.

I don’t get how it would be harder on the system than engi kits.

First off it took a bit of getting used to not having weapon cool-downs. It was awesome. I could just sit there and spam heartseeker as if its an i-win button, my only counter being endure pain skills.

TBH the damage output here is what i’ve been trying to push out of warrior for some time now- rifle burst pushing the limits but being insanely unreliable. But this? This is crazy, i feel like i just started playing a 1up profession. It’s my first day with it, and already i’m scoring top 3 on my team several games in a row.

Hard to play? Not really- i could work on some timings and cooldowns but tbh the overall survival mechanics and reliance of cooldowns on my warrior made that WAY harder than this profession.

Please, please, please tell me this was you trying to gather proof of how “awesome” HS spam is while I was screwing around on my warrior.

That’s an invalid question.

We’re talking about the Thief here, not the player’s situational awareness. The Thief profession should have been made by ArenaNet to support bad players (because majority wins). So if the Thief player failed horribly in playing the profession that the Thief player will still survive a 14K Kill Shot and take revenge on the Warrior for sneaking that skill on them.

The solution is to increase the Thief’s damage so that they can magically survive a Kill Shot (even a Churning Earth) because that’s the only logical way to improve the Thief. Also there should be a built-in sensor system, that automatically make the Thief dodge an incoming projectile that would kill them if it hits. So this 14K Kill Shot would never have happen if ArenaNet look out for the player who has no sense in playing a high skilled profession like the Thief.

In addition, the Thief should also be extremely agile, I mean like putting Neo’s and Spiderman’s agility together, so that even if the Thief choose to attack someone in the middle of an AoE field, and stay there, that they will survive this mind boggling bad decision to satisfy any player who plays Thief. This is what Shadow Art is suppose to be, to allow Thief to turn into shadow and only materialize when they deal damage, then turn back into shadow form again to avoid damage.

If none of these are implemented then ArenaNet failed miserably in to designing a very attractive and cool-looking profession. They just don’t know how to make a Thief. And if you disagree with me, then you’re a cool aide drinker fan boy.

Oh, we could have a spider sense trait! Whenever someone has you targeted, that player has a red glow around them. When they start channeling a skill with over a 1.5 multiplier, the aura flashes just to give us better situational awareness! Channels of 2.5 or more will automatically be dodged if endurance is available, and if endurance is not available, as signet of agility with activate and then you’ll dodge as long as you have it on your bar.

Actually signet of agility gets moved to F2 so it’s always on your skill bar.

Or large/two-handed balisongs…. Pretty sure large ones are legit, not sure on the historical aspect of large balisongs. Pretty sure they were made as kind of scrapped-together weapons.

:D Who am I kidding. I’ll probably be a revenant after the expansion drops. Check out their traits and weapon skills, they can hurl hammers with 1200 range. Yes, 1200 range, flying, hammers. While here we are struggling to shoot an arrow that far. Oh and from the skill description it seems the hammer goes through the enemies in a line…

Well someone datamined Shiro’s name under the revenant, so maybe we’ll see more canthan style gear in general to fill out that theme. I’m probably going to stick with my thief main, ele favorite alt, but the rev might be in the running for my alt depending on how customizable they end up being.

I could get behind that. I want to use my aetherized rifle and Belindas GS on my charr thief. Have you seen how charr take out rifles? And the possibilities with GS is also pretty cool.

Was Mugen a GS Thief? I normally wouldn’t care for GS but since I have the Katana it’d be fun naow. I’d still rather have Rifle, Axe or MH Torch though.

I love Charr’s Rifle Animation~ I use Fractal Rifle and it leaves a swirl of mist when he spins it around rapidly when I spam sheath/unsheath it. My Thief’s a fluffy Sylvari tho and isn’t blessed with custom animations but it’d give me a nice reason to use that skin on him since he could never get a Fractal drop he could use.

Thief/Scoundrel/Pirate. His sheath has a hidden dagger compartment. I mean, the series is pretty good, funny, and well drawn; definitely worth watching if you haven’t.

My first thief was a sylvari and I deleted him cause the animations/ voice drove me nuts. I shouldv’e just gender swapped him, but meh. I love the aggressive feel of charr thieves though (the heartseeker is a pounce for reference). I just want to add the rifle unstow to to coolness of a charr thief.

Thieves can’t 1 shot you from stealth. Mesmers can. I have a bigger problem with that.

I main a shatter Mes, I’m no pro but I can say without a doubt that only the most glassy, upleveled and new Ele, Thief or another Mes might be downed in what you call a “one shot.” To be precise we have to pop 3-4 CDs to do that with dead-on timing, not just one lazy button press like a Thief.

There is no comparison.

This is just insulting.

“One lazy button?” Seriously?

A thief with a real burst build not 1-shotting uplevels has to blow three to six cooldowns and their weapon swap to deal such damage. I know I personally go through eight button presses, all of my utilities, elite, class mechanic, weapon swapping, and half of my global resource pool before considering the reposition on CnD -> stab when using my proper stab damage build in what is normally under a second, while still needing to find the rear of the target and execute as necessary.

Oh shush. Our glorious autoattack is enough to take down anything. It’s a wonder we even get dodges because we just press our button and the burst happens and the person dies, so there’s no need to dodge what’s already dead. We’re just all playing thief wrong, obviously.

Sorry quick question and suggestion very fast: how is it possible?

I have a question: i do not want to create a new thread in mesmer forum: would it be good idea for Arena net remove Auto-attack from thief? Because few minute ago, i was 1 v 1 a thief and play memser: the thief know where i was in stealth, no matter how far i was in stealth, the thief found me. The thief health never went down: bunker? But damage was very high? Fight last about 2 minute until i die. Another question: can thief track mesmer stealth?

The thief instant killed all my clone and phant. and found me while i was in stealth and prevent me to stealth so many time: steal? Any suggestion if any thief player play memser here can answer? or thief player who know what happend?

Yes! i dodge but same result.

If you are dodging while in stealth, the thief will follow where your clones pop up.
What might be preventing you from stealthing is shattering, then stealthing, but your clones hit the thief after, dealing damage and revealing you. Ranged attacks can also cause this problem such as using staff auto, then using decoy, then the attack hits revealing you as well.

Also-a two minute fight means that at least one of you is playing a highly defensive build. You need more burst on your build.

It is hard to counteract that in kittenery without posting something graphic so I’ll just say search “O’ren ishii sniping” on youtube if you do not mind it.

Firstly, I doubt that it will be THAT long ranged (from the top of some apartment building shooting kilometers away). Secondly, I wouldn’t mind the rifle if we could go into 1st person snipping mode (the satisfaction of personally aiming for the head…), which again I highly doubt that’s something they will ever implement. And thirdly the acrobatic stunt being pulled in maug’s clip, she didn’t do much besides falling… since she was spotted in the first place.

The closer you are to the enemy and the more tool-less you are while killing them the more bad-kitten you are.
Bare fists > Brass knuckles > Butter knifes > Knifes > swords > bows (skill wise) > hand guns > rifles > long ranged rifles > tanks/vehicles > missiles > someone else doing it for you while you’re on another continent sipping champagne.

Did you even see jump-dodge-rolling up the staircase?!

Like I said though, I wouldn’t mind GS either. I think the only weapons I’d be disappointed in would be torch, focus, shield, warhorn, and staff.

Axes could turn us into an amazing ball of whirling dearh.

If they would increase the rollover duration time, I would use this skill (again). I think a bigger window to use shadow pursuit as a stunbreak would make it more useful in combat. Really if they just reduced the return range to 1200 and made destroy shadow trap instant again, I might use it also. It’s too niche now in terms of use.

An actual remake of traps could be done to make them into marks (not like necro marks). In close combat (130 range) strike your opponent, marking them. The skill then gets a rollover for 20 seconds which allows you to activate the effect of the traps (as they currently are). In this way, you’d be able to plant the mark on someone, then use it tactically within the rollover time.

Example:
Needle Trap → Mark of Debility
1) Mark your target with MoD (range 130)
2)(activate mark, 20 second rollover) Immobilize, poison, and bleed marked target. (range 1200)

Tripwire → Mark of Exhaustion
1) Mark your target (Range 130)
2)(activate mark, 20 second rollover) Knock down marked target (range 1200)

Shadow Trap → Mark of Pursuit
1) Mark your target (range 130)
2) (activate mark, 20 second rollover) break stun. Shadowstep to marked target. Gain fury, might, swiftness, stealth. (Range 1200)

Ambush → Mark of Ambush
1) Mark your target (range 130)
2) (activate mark, 20 second rollover) Summon a thief to attack marked target (range 1200)

So if thief use berserker armors he have to use berserker jewelery and weapons too?

To get the right amount of damage and survivability, valk or soldier’s acessories are mixed in, but zerk is usually used as the base. More defensive pieces swapped in until you reach a health pool you’re comfortable with, but power is still usually the main stat.

So full adrenaline kill shot has a 3.25 multiplier. It takes 1.25 seconds to channel now.
CnD has a 1.5 multiplier (0.5 sec) and Backstab has a 2.4 mult (0.25 sec) which is a total of 3.9 in less than a second. We have a higher but riskier burst.

We are a higher risk, higher reward class which requires lower latency. That’s just how it goes.

I’m going to go with Sir Vincent on this one. Pack is very useful on thieves with the power and precision bump as well as the proc which stacks nicely with thrill of the crime.

The problem with every class having an energy resource to use their skills instead of cool downs is that they’ll have to be rebalanced for that. Imagine a warrior just spamming GS 3 accross a point, or a ranger doing nothing but rapid fire, or an elementalist laying down half a dozen simultaneous meteor showers.

Don’t forget phoenix. Can you imagine all the screeching sounds flying around?

Or obsidian flesh.

@OP: a lot of thief skills are balanced around their repeatable nature.

26006 is a great old standby.

50036 has more evasion and extends your venom durations since you like ‘em (someone suggested devourer, try it, it’s absolutely great)

60206 can give you extra venom strikes or panic strike.

56XXX or 66XXX are great for just pumping out damage with reckless abandon.

I personally would love a rifle, with weapon skills to imitate a sniper rifle. Sniper rifles, although a heavy weapon, are silent and deadly. I think Thieves fit the description of ‘silent and deadly’ too. I’d expect a 800-1000 range on most of the rifle skills. The auto attack dealing moderate damage (850-1200), a cc (possibly a knockback) or immobilize, a shoot-and-stealth skill similar to the ranger’s, aoe poison or blind is an option as well.

Ever shoot a .50 cal?

Without high-end ear protection, you will not hear for around 12-15 hours because they are so loud. Silent or even remotely quiet “sniper” rifles by concept are made up by the media; most “sniper rifles” seen in this light are just low-caliber hunting rifles.

This is why they’re so un-fitting to thieves. The weapons make quite literally no sense whatsoever for them to have, seeing as their use at such long ranges would also inhibit any kind of stealing/burglary.

I don’t know how we got from a sniper rifle to a .50 cal. I mean, we could certainly go with something a little lighter like a .308 or a 30-06. Also, in this game, nothing is really that far away. Nearest I can tell is that the ranges for everything are in centimeters because melee range is 130 which would be a little less than half your armspan + about midway on the weapon you’re using(armspan being 175ish for a male, so 87.5 + 100cm for an averaged hitbox). That would make 1200 range just about 12 meters. I think a person who is trained in it could fire from a standing/walking position and hit a person. Crit chance takes into account that they might wing the person or hit them center of mass.

Anyway, just my thoughts on it.

This is a funny thread. I spent all day today playing on my mesmer alt in pvp, and I have to say if you dont go glass meta shatter, you can make a build that will infuriate good thieves and absolutely wreck bad thieves. At the worst, you end up stalemating against them or pushing them off.

Give hybrid shatter a try. As I already said, mesmer is an alt, so I’m sure this could be tweaked to be better and probably used better as well by someone who mains the class.

Anyway, I disagree with your assessment, but if there was enough vitriol in your blood to come here, I doubt I’ll get anywhere with a more in depth conversation.

PS: My highlight of the night was seeing someone take over 1500 damage from confusion from an autoattack. Lol’d

Wake up people. Warrior ALREADY have the sniping skill

I am afraid our rifle end up some Cond Damage set or something.

Good sustained damage assault rifles would be cool. Especially with damage drop off, so the farther away you get, the less damage you do (like fps games). I don’t see why a rifle needs to be a burst weapon, it just needs to put enough pressure on the enemy that you can wait for an opening to burst them down with your weapon swap.

My numbers were made up to make a point. NOBODY is going to allow anyone to invest significant resources without 2 things:

1) An insurmountable problem that MUST be fixed.
2) A significant return in potential revenue.

Neither of those apply here. The game as it is is NOT suffering for lack of DX11 support (it is NOT a MUST for the game to continue).

The other side of this is supporting multiple versions since they certainly CAN NOT discontinue support for the DX9 version. Despite what most player seem to think, that would actually INCREASE their recurring costs as well (having to test any change at least twice….having to do EVERYTHING twice).

True in one sense. It comes down to quality of game play, with Guild Wars 2 having both client-side and server-side limitations. Frankly, they are about at the limit of what they can get performance-wise from the client, and PvE, WvW (and possibly some content in HoT) show this. I realize that some of the issues with WvW are server-side, but some are not. When your only option is to overclock the snot out of your CPU to get the truly best experience, it gets to be problematic . So yes, cost benefit analysis says that DX12 isn’t necessary at the moment, but they may find that their desire to add specific features to drive growth of the player base is sufficient to prompt the effort.

Some of us enjoy trying to pull 4.7 gigs out of our AMD 8150…. until it crashes… or overheats…

So condi duration in the power line is really useful for utility condis such as immobilize, weakness, and poison. I usually go 5 into it which boosts the total immobilize duration of DV by 1 second. That’s an extra heartseeker into the target, potentially finishing them off.

Lemme give my two cents. Thief and mesmer both have very different playstyles. Shatter mesmer must dive in with the mindset of ‘all-or-none’ if they want to come out victorious. They have to be rapid, fast, and give no room for an opponent to pause. Shatter mesmer has to be extremely aggressive, and rely on their plethora of on-demand escapes if they want to remain in the middle of the fight – and turn those escapes to be used offensively as well. Decoy can mean another clone, Diversion can stack torment, distort to reflect back missiles, and dodges to summon more clones for shatter.

Thief on the other hand, cannot afford to be too aggressive. If a thief overstays in a fight, they will lose. They must pull back, re-position themselves, then dive back in. They need to calculate and gauge their enemy before each strike. Even builds that are ‘in your face’ (like s/d) still require you to pull back if the going gets too rough.

You cannot play the two builds in a similar manner, and anticipate the same results. One time when I was roaming as a mesmer, I made the fatal mistake of trying to pull away like a thief. The moment I did so, I knew it was a mistake and that I would be dead – I can’t escape like a thief. Another time while dueling as a thief, I got too aggressive and tried to finish off my opponent instead of retreating with a heal before finishing them off – that made me lose the duel.

In a nutshell: play thief like a coward. Play mesmer like a crazy person.

Tempest, you are correct: thief is not a fun class to fight, so i understand why you had bad experience. Where is challenge when you not design to not be challenge? Like i do in my experience when encounter with thief: i do not run but stand and die.

Like a warrior code: Die With Honor! Why Die With Honor? Thief class is not challenge class, that is why.

Thiefs are not fun to fight if you dont know what you are doing or you play something like a shatter mesmer…

Thieves are really fun to fight on my shatter mesmer (and fresh air ele). One party goes down really fast depending on strategy, skill, reaction time, and execution. That might be me more times than not, but neither of those alts are my main, so I usually don’t feel bad about it.
