I don’t really see why people are suggesting complicated solutions like auto complete skills challenges. If there’s a hard cap on hero points, the simplest solution is to simply give existing 80s the full 465 hero points, then any new skill/hero challenges they do add to it until they hit the cap, then it adds no more.

Suppose the overall cap is 550 (random number I’m pulling from nowhere), an existing level 80 that has done no skill challenges whatsoever gets the full 465. Then gets whatever they’re supposed to get whenever they do a hero/skill challenge(I assume 1 per) until they hit 550 total, then any more skill/hero challenges they do, grant them no hero points, it simply grants them the completed icon for map completion.

No need for stuff like negative hero points and WvW giving more etc.

people need to realize that 1000 possible unique builds, 980 of which are complete rubbish is worse than let say (random number) 50 possible builds, all of which are viable.

Realistically speaking, how many people do you think currently run something like 4/4/2/2/2 or 5/5/2/1/1 or anything weird like that? I’m willing to bet less than 0.01% of players do that.

That’s a pretty silly assumption. Almost all of my builds use adept or even just one minor in a line. My traits are usually spread across 4 trait lines. For example, My ele is 0,2,2,6,4. My guardian is 0,2,6,4,2. My warrior is 1,0,4,6,3. Many of these builds are common among my fellow players and are guild builds.

I’m not a theory crafter so I won’t bother trying to figure out the details of your builds, but are you telling me, that “reckless dodge” on your warrior is such a huge core part of your build. You use it so much to kill your enemies that losing that one trait and gaining 5 more traits is a net loss for your build?

It would be nice to put 2 or 4 into that line. But no, I have to meaningfully waste more points on traits that I have no use for. Why can’t I put another master or adept trait in the grandmaster slot? At least that slot would be doing something useful then.

what points are you wasting exactly? We get 4 extra points with the new system even if all 4 ends up used for traits you don’t need/want you’re still back where you started. You’re no worse off than before.

Locked into lines we don't want?

For most of the classes you’re forced into specific trait lines just because you hold a type of weapon.

This. So much of this. You want to be greatsword you have to get the greatsword trait and anything else that comes with it. Most of the time the traits seem well enough balanced that it’s -okay- but it still feels restricting. I should be able to play a power/condition build with a mace/shield guardian if I kitten well want to.

what are you on about? you can easily do that with the new system. Why do you have to go down the GS line simply because you want to use a GS? You don’t have to. I mean my necro carries an axe right now, but I don’t have any axe specific traits. With the new system I suspect I will also not use any axe specific traits unless it happens to fall in the line I want and is the best choice for my build.

As for the OP. I assume you’re running 6/6/2 and then 0 on the other two lines, with the 2 specifically to get the fall damage trait. How exactly will this change your build? you now simply have 6/6/6 and you can still use your fall damage trait, but you get 2 extra minor and 2 extra major traits along with it.

I can understand some of the valid concerns some other people have raised, but the majority of these complaints are ridiculous.

Well spvp did get open stronghold beta, so there. Also what is the difference again between random selection closed beta and open beta? Cause it’s not the quality of testers if you ask me. And if it’s numbers of ppl getting access…well solution above.

sPvP and this are two different things. Stronghold was clearly polished enough that they just wanted to know whether or not people liked it and to make minor tweaks. Hence why it was open. Closed Beta and Open Beta are different because the content being tested are at different stages of development/readyness.

This is not an Open Beta.

This is also no worse than refreshing random fan/gaming news websites for the chance that those specific websites got keys and you managed to refresh at the right moment and grab a key before it runs out.

I do think that they probably should’ve made it a possible drop everywhere instead of just SW/DT. But since the beta test is for PvE content, it does make sense to try and get the mainly PvE players for this particular test.

Nate.3927

Got to say I agree with the OP.

I just read Specializations, Part One and Part Two. It sounds pretty horrific.

Firstly, I will admit it give me a huge headache and I am not sure I understand it all.

But, I get the impression they are dumbing down the trait system even more, making stats even more ridged and lessening our ability to vary them, introducing lots of new forms of grinding (reward tracks). Also, ultimately the rewards, skills, we get are no better then we have now and in some cases worse, dumbed down.

Also, this was the bit I am not sure on, are some of our present level 80 traits being stripped away from us? I get the impression Anet wants us to re earn traits we already got.

Really, sounds terrible…

I agree that they are streamlining things. But stats are not more rigid. In fact in some ways they are now more flexible since they are no longer linked to traits. I mentioned this in another thread, but there is nothing preventing you from mixing and matching armor/trinket pieces with differing stats. Maybe you’re used to having full zerk armor, then traiting into toughness and vitality for extra survivability. Well now you can simply switch out some of the zerk armor with knights and some with valk and you get the exact same thing.

You’ll have to play around with it for sure and perhaps the final result won’t have the same exact stat distribution that you currently have, but it’ll be close to it.

Look the thing that I loved about gw1 was the 1000s of skills available to my character…but I eventually grew up and realized that you still only use a small set of these skills. The people who are going to complain about losing access to those two trait lines, need to go back and really look at their builds and see that the overwhelming majority of the time, they are going to have two trait lines that they weren’t using anyways. or if they were it was for some negligible minor trait… especially since (using the water ele traits that have been revealed as a example) the traits seem to be getting better and doing more.

Im afraid i disagree.

I have 5 builds that i like to use for different scenarios on my warrior as follows and for when im just bored with one.

6,0,4,0,4 (shin’s build) for WvW
2,0,6,0,6 (TDM legendary 3.0) for WvW
0,0,6,2,6 (leg specialist GS/hammer) for WvW
0,5,0,6,3 (Phalanx Strength) for dungeons
0,5,6,0,3 (forceful GS) for Silverwastes.

As you can i see i go 6 deep in every trait line except ARMS (i go 5) . If im forced to only be able to spec into 3 trait lines im going to get bored real quick.

umm, all 5 of your builds utilizes only 3 trait lines. We get 3 full trait lines. So… what’s the problem?

based on the info in the article yes, you won’t be able to select two master traits from the same line. BUT the traits as they are will be reviewed, some will be moved, some will be changed etc.

would be nice if we could at least choose the stat points but as it seems they will just be put on armor instead which will again limit variety because i assume that power gear will have more power on it then, and not vitality.

i’m not saying the trait rework is all bad but this just caught my eye and i would, as a game dev, not make the same decision and limit the traits (and also the stats).

If you want vitality…the vitality gear will also be more powerful…

right now when you play something like fresh air berserk ele you take the 4 points in water because of the +2k hitpoints, playing fresh air with vitality armor would not be what i want. especially in PvP where you have no armor to mix and match to begin with.

I’m making an assumption here because I don’t actually know if this is true or not. But I thought trait lines currently don’t give stats anyway in sPvP? All stats come from amulets and whatnot?

For PvE and WvW, you don’t have to wear full sets of armor you know that right? If you mix zerk pieces with valkyrie pieces you’ll get less precision, but more vitality etc. Stat diversity is still perfectly possible. You will be getting more zerk stats from your zerk armor pieces, so switching some out for Valk or others can bring your overall stats to the same as what you currently have.

I don’t think it’s a total disaster or gamebreaking, but it’s certainly stifling variation and flexibility. It’s a step in the wrong direction, in my opinion. We’re supposed to be getting more options in builds, not limiting them.

There are some traitlines with traits I consider vital in the adept and master tiers. Traitlines that I have no use or desire to go further into. Being able to spend those points going partially into another traitline is a huge part of the flexibility we have now. They won’t even be useful by giving additional stats under this new system.

There are also several characters where I forgo a master trait for a second minor, or even a grandmaster for a second master. From the screenshots in today’s posts, that looks to no longer be possible.

I feel like some of you just completely fail at reading comprehension. The existing traits will be changed and moved around. So that trait that you consider vital on the adept/master tier of a traitline you don’t actually want? May actually get moved into a traitline you want to max out.

Some of them will even disappear and their functionality become part of the skill’s normal functionality. Using the example from the article, necromancer wells. At the moment I need to take Focused Rituals for ground targeting, because otherwise I have to jump into the middle of the enemy hammer train to drop my wells and with a large enough enemy zerg, that’s a really bad thing to do. If that trait gets removed since it’s now become a normal part of the well line of skills, I can now use that slot for something else that I might find more useful.

I would suggest dropping the stat bonuses from the game entirely, but that might hurt certain builds which rely on unique stats, like Boon+, and throw things a bit out of whack.

people need to realise that the word “taunt” is just a word. It can mean whatever the developers want it to mean. If you read the actual description you’d realise that in the case of GW2 it’s basically just the opposite of fear.

Taunt in GW2 won’t be like other MMO taunts because threat works differently in GW2 than other MMOs by that I mean threat in this game is poorly designed and once taunt wears off the mob will go back to doing what it was doing before it was taunted, meaning agro doesn’t exist in this game as it does in other MMOs. What taunt will do in this game is force a mob to attack you which is exactly what taunt does in all other trinity MMOs. The only difference is that it’s effects won’t persist past the skills duration.

which is exactly why taunt won’t bring the triangle into GW2. Did you misunderstood the intent of my post? Taunt in GW2 based on the description we have been given is a new CC. Nothing more.

You clearly lack a basic understanding of threat generation which is what I referenced in my response. In MMOs threat is generated by damage in GW2 it’s partly based on proximity which would allow a revenant to pull a mob near via taunt and hold the mob with proximity. This functions differently than most MMOs but the effect is similar.

and how exactly is that any different from guardian gs 5? or thief scorpion wire? or any number of other skills on other classes that pulls/pushes foes around? You’re complaining for the sake of complaining not because you actually have a valid point to back you up.

Stability changes

Nate.3927

reading this topic I notice that a lot of people seem to be looking at the stab changes as if it’s the only thing that will change. Did everyone forget about the following:

- Guard Longbow
- Engineer Hammer
- Necro GS
- Mesmer Shield
- Ranger Staff

and other changes?

At the moment if you see a guardian in a zerg, 99% of the time that guard is running shouts and staff because they lack a proper long range option in a zerg fight (scepter can be useful for roaming builds but useless in zerg fights). With access to a longbow, guards may end up being an effective backliner.

Necros, if you see one in a zerg, 99% of the time it’s a power necro with wells and marks. With GS? Maybe a melee necro in a zerg can become viable/effective.

You have to take the stab changes together with the rest of the changes, most of which we know nothing about right now.

I don’t mind “loosing some tricks” but I do mind which one I’ll loose. That’s why I’m a little worried when I hear that initially we will be given only one specialisation.

ye but if you dont like the loosing the ones you lose, you just switch back to an elementalist, since you can swap out of combat when you choose too

The Trojan Yak

Cost: Not sure but at least 50 supply, maybe even 100 or 200

Description:

- Builds a wooden dolyak on wheels.
- Five people max can fit into the yak.
- Clearly a fake wooden yak when you can actually see it, but appears on the map/mini-map as a friendly yak (to enemy players).
- NPC guards will see the fake yak as a friendly and allow it to pass through outer gates.
- Moves at the same speed as a regular yak.
- Must be built at the vicinity of a camp, doesn’t matter if you own it or the enemy owns it. So no building right in front of enemy gates.
- First person to jump in will control the yak and move, the other 4 just sits inside.
- Trojan Yak mastery will give boosts to movement speed, safe escape from a destroyed yak and allow skills like an illusion to temporarily make the yak look like a normal one even to enemy players that are close enough to see it.
- Cannot be WP’ed. If the players inside the yak WP, the yak will be left behind.

Usage: To sneak into objectives undetected. Obviously for keeps/castles, you still need to get through inner with other siege.

Seconday effect: Encourage defenders to check/escort friendly yaks more?
