Unfortunately it is inevitable for a game not to become a “grindfest” these days.
Not because of the game, but because of the people. People used to play for fun and immersion, but these days people will automatically become “grinders”. It is only about rewards now, be it by the developers’ own intentions or not.
There are a few things you can do:
1. Join the grinders.
2. Quit.
3. Play the game the way you want to and have fun with, but accept that you will be “behind” a lot of people because of their grind mentality.
Personally I am for the third option.
I do what I want to do, where I want to do it, and when I want to do it.
And in the end I will be the one leaving this game feeling satisfied and sad that it had to end, while the people with the grind mentality will ragequit and claim the game had turned into something horrible, when in fact it was those people who turned into something horrible – people who are unable to enjoy a game for what it is.

Hell, anything would be better than what Funcom did on the 1 year aniversity of Age of Conan where all of the players got a firework that had a 8 hour cooldown. Yes! This wonderful and well thought out gift to loyal players was a FIREWORK that could only be used once every EIGHT HOURS!
I don’t think anyone could beat that for lameness but I could be wrong.
For WoW’s 8 year anniversary Blizzard just made a video of the bosses that have been slain since the launch of the game.
On topic:
What I hope for: Either a new set of armour skins or weapon skins.
What it probably will be: A backslot item.

You’ve put your finger on a significant issue with the reward system in GW2.
Much of the lack of challenge came from rushing this game to beat Mists of Pandaria (or whatever it’s called). You can see that traits and skills were hastily designed, and that dungeon bosses had to be given the Defiant band aid because there really wasn’t enough time to design meaningful encounters.
ArenaNet announced the release date of Guild Wars 2 before Blizzard announced the release date for Mists of Pandaria.
MOP was rushed out to compete with GWII, not the other way around.
That said, it is fairly easy to see that GWII was rushed out as well. It just wasn’t rushed out in order to compete with anything.

I don’t know exactly how I would feel with a legendary, but I recently went through something just as, if not more painful. At least that’s how it felt to me.
I was going through the tutorial mission on an Asura and as I was destroying the Prototype X, or whatever it is called, I suddenly got disconnected and when I looked at the character selection screen all of my characters were gone. I can’t describe the feeling I got, but I was almost certain that I would quit, because ArenaNet don’t restore lost characters as far as I know.
My client then crashed, and my internet went off completely.
After about ten minutes my internet went back up and I started the client again. When I got to the character selection screen my characters were back.
I haven’t felt like that since I was little and my mom as a joke told me on Christmas eve that I wouldn’t get any presents because I had been bad.

The respawn timers should definitely depend on the mobs.
It should take much longer for a veteran or a champion to respawn than a normal mob. Especially if it is in a crowded area.
But the rest I disagree with.
Having very difficult content is nessecary.
Just as an example, look at World of Warcraft. During the time where the PvE content required skill and teamwork the game got more and more subscribers.
But the exact moment Blizzard started to make it easy the game started to lose subscribers.
Over the past three years WoW has been bleeding subscribers. They’ve lost 4 million players since then, and it continues to go down.
People say that Vanilla, The Burning Crusade and to a certain extent Wrath of the Lich King were the prime times of WoW, and they are right. The numbers speak for themselves. Because back then the game felt rewarding, now it’s:" Give me my free epics or I quit".
And that should not happen to GWII.

I am absolutely crazy about the holidays in GWII!
Although I wish they would stop making so many of them appear in Lion’s Arch.
Divinity’s Reach would be so perfect for this. And I think Halloween should of been in The Grove.

Welcome to Tyria, Aby!
The areas that are designed for level 1-15 are: Queensdale, Metrica Province, Caledon Forest, Wayfarer Foothills and Plains of Ashford.
Personally, I always do the first few levels by exploring the main cities. By the time you are done you are about level 6 if you start at level 2.
You find NPCs that can repair your equipment by looking at your maps and find a red shield icon. There is, as far as I know, one at the beginning of each of the starter zones, at the little town near the city.

You probably don’t want to do this, but you could re-visit the entire map and look for things you didn’t see the first time you were there.
There are a ton of hidden stuff in GWII, and in my opinion nothing makes the world feel more alive than when you can go to a place you’ve already been and have a new experience. This is also why I don’t farm events.
There are also a ton of NPCs with very interesting dialogue.
For example I was exploring The Grove on my new Necromancer yesterday and found this guy called Pherick. I’m not gonna tell you what he said, but I’d suggest that you don’t skip NPCs that have actual names instead of stuff like Villager.
And if you ever see something in the distance that looks interesting, go for it. More often than not it is something worth visiting, even if it’s just a nice looking place.

GWII makes me think about the future of MMOs.
ArenaNet has innovated on such a ridicolous long list of things that other MMOs suffer from, and I for one simply cannot get into MMOs now that don’t follow GWII’s way.
Wildstar, for example, I will never play. Exclamation mark quests is reason enough for me to not even give it a try.
And the world in the distance doesn’t look like concept art, which I also now need. I want to be able to take a screenshot anywhere I like and have it look epic.
GWII makes me feel at home.
And spoiled like Veruca Salt from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zkT2uZAGA – GW2 – A world of wonder
Your level is an indicator of your experience with your profession.
As a level 80 you should be experienced enough to play in a low level area without dying.
And the downscaling system is what really seperates GWII from other MMOs.
Everything is viable content.
As a high level character in other MMOs, what is your incentive to go to a low level area? A small note that says “You’ve completed 55 quests in this area”. That’s it.
In other MMOs there is so much wasted content. If I am level 57, why I go to a level 13 zone? That’s an entire zone that won’t keep me interested. And concidering how long it can take to develop a single zone, say Snowden Drifts, don’t you think it would be better if the zone always was viable?
Guild Wars 2 launched with more viable content than World of Warcraft has ever had, and WoW has been out for almost 9 years now.
That’s a feat.

Other game aspects / suggestions:
- Inspecting other characters equipment, necessary for serious guilds wvw/pve, and pug pve.
My gear is not anyone else’s business.
If I know how to play my profession and I’m not slowing the group down you have no right to complain about what gear I have.
The community in GWII is one of its biggest strength. Allowing inspecting would lead to elitism.
I don’t want any:“You will not be accepted in this guild unless you have the very best gear available” in my game.
Recruit me because of my skills, not my gear.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zkT2uZAGA – GW2 – A world of wonder
Of course the best option would be to implement one in-game, but for some reason that is not happening. At least not at the moment.
I don’t think it’s because it would be difficult to implement, but rather the fact that it would be viewed as a waste of time and resources, as there already is a LFG tool, be it outside the game or not.
But I could be wrong.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zkT2uZAGA – GW2 – A world of wonder
Personally I would rather do one thing that is really hard and takes a lot of effort.
But the person next to me would rather do a hundred little things that don’t require much effort, so it’s best to make both so neither of us feel neglected.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zkT2uZAGA – GW2 – A world of wonder
As far as I’m concerned, it is about the same as it was at launch.
But let me give you a tip: Play whatever profession you want and however you want to play it.
There will always be professions and builds that are superior to others, but unless you care about being 100% as effective as possible it really isn’t worth playing the game in a way you don’t enjoy.
You’ll end up having a horrible time.
But the zones may be a little emptier than usual, as a ton of people are busy with the Living Story in Southsun Cove.
But then again, it really depends on your server.
Edit: Bumping your own post is probably concidered as spamming.

Not having a subscription fee is only pros.
If you pay every month you expect a certain quality of updates and quality content on a regular basis – this leads to nothing but dissapointment.
If you only have to buy the box you appreciate the content added an awful lot more because you wouldn’t nessecarily expect it since you aren’t paying for it.
Plus, if you don’t pay a subscription you actually want to give the developers money because you appreciate them a lot more and want to support the game more.
Having a subscription fee for an MMO is a thing of the past.
Think of GWII as Minecraft. Perhaps you only play it every now and then, but it is there for you whenever you feel like it, without you having pay for it.

If you are grinding in GW2 , then you are playing as if GW2 is a gear based game. It isn’t.
Don’t grind, just play and the rewards will be way better than simply getting loot. If it isn’t fun, then you don’t like the game.I see this all the time. People still view GW2 as an “old school” MMO. GW2 is about ENTERTAINING the player, not about making them more powerful. This is why we have things like Living Story and temporary content. It is about having fun in a living, changing world. (at 80 you have the whole world to play in, not just high end).
GW2 ,isn’t a theme park MMO.
GW2 isn’t a Sandbox MMO.
GW2 is a Playground MMO. It’s simply about playing for fun.
This.

Í could make a very long list but I’ll just add a few here:
1. More permanent armour and weapon skins.
2. Fixing culling.
3. More PvP maps.
4. Making open world zones cross-realm.
I know that cross-realm zones have ruined a lot in WoW, but with the way GWII works I think that the outcome would be positive.
5. More soundtracks, preferably tavern soundtracks.
6. Being able to costumize my UI.

There are two things that really annoy me:
1. The fact that there is a main city rather than having all the features available in every city.
2. The voice acting for female characters. Honestly, if I close my eyes and then a female character speaks I most likely won’t be able to tell what race it is. Except for Asura, Quaggan and Skritt.

Personally I like the fact that most of the world in GWII is “clean”.
With the industrial wasteland the real world is becoming I am very pleased to be in a world that, except for The Black Citadel, Orr and to a certain extend Ebonhawke, is nice, calm and beautiful, without having to read a book.
I like having a little gore in games, but I don’t like games that are in some way representing the real world in terms of pollution and destruction, or even architecture.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zkT2uZAGA – GW2 – A world of wonder
I guess the feature I miss the most is being able to costumize my UI, even if it was through AddOns.
Look at the UI I had in WoW. That is my UI!
Even though I had to use an AddOn to make it it still made the game much more appealing to me.

I would add a greataxe for warriors and rangers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zkT2uZAGA – GW2 – A world of wonder
It’s really a matter of opinion.
For me something prestigious is something that cannot be easily obtained, aka. something that I never will get my hands on, such as legendaries or dungeon armour.
Items that are based on RNG I view as a different kind of prestigious.
I think the items will make you stand out and that you have been lucky, but they definitely don’t make me think you put in more effort than others.
Personally I don’t really view 100% map completion as something prestigious, although I do think it will make you stand out.
But that’s really because my OCD demands that I complete every zone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zkT2uZAGA – GW2 – A world of wonder
Now, or at least in a not too distant future, is a great time to release an expansion pack when you take into concideration that the main competitor is doing awfully at the moment.
That said, I hope they don’t rush anything.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zkT2uZAGA – GW2 – A world of wonder
Absolutely not.
I’d rather have two different sets and be able to choose which set I want to wear while playing the race of my choice.
Beside that, we already have cultural armour, though we only have three sets so far.

Conclusion
Guild Wars 2 failed. By ArenaNet’s own definition of success, “Is it fun?”, the answer often is “no, it’s not”
Yeah, well, that’s just like, your opinion man.

Hello.
I apologize if this thread will count as spam, as there have been a ton of threads about this subject, but I would like to voice my opinion in case this may turn out to be a rose among the thorns.
In GWII the only materials you can actively gather are logs, mining nodes and herbs. Everything else drops off mobs and you have no influence on how it drops.
If you are missing some chocolate in order to cook something, then you are basically screwed. Because you may never get one. It may drop on your first kill, but it can also take you months to obtain it due to bad luck.
This is extremely poor design. It could have been very simple. You could have wild sheep running around, with each sheep guaranteed to drop a piece of cloth. There could be groups of alchemists gathering data together with the Inquest, each guaranteed to drop vials. Krait, or just all fish, could be guaranteed to drop scales.
These are just some examples that come to mind.
However, I think I have a solution that may solve more problems than are already here due to the current system.
All crafting materials could be bought with universal tokens that have a 100% drop chance from all mobs.
For example: You kill a skelk and recieve a Craftman’s Token. With that token you can buy a piece of crafting material of your choice. Be it cloth, scales, chocolate, vials, you name it, from a vendor.
These vendors could be placed around the districts of the racial cities.
This would also help bring people to these beautiful cities that we have. Lion’s Arch would remain the capital city due to the mystic forge and the FOTM dungeon, yet we would also have a reason to actively go to the other cities, without turning Lion’s Arch into a ghost town.
I haven’t thought about how this would effect the economy, so I apologize if it would be destroyed by this system, but in my opinion a player should be able to gather his/her own material instead of relying on materials to be available cheaply on the trading post.
This is my idea, I don’t know if it nessecarily would improve much, but I think that it would be a better system than the one we currently have in place. And keep in mind that this is just my opinion.
Thanks for reading.

People play for different reasons.
Some won’t do anything that doesn’t increase their stats, others couldn’t care less about stats as long as they’re having fun.
There is nothing wrong with playing the game in a specific way as long as your way of playing the game doesn’t effect other people negatively.
And there will NEVER be enough content, in any game, to occupy everyone. People take in content at different rates.
Also, when people say that they have run out of content it doesn’t nessecarily mean they’ve done everything. Sometimes it simply means that they have run out of things they want to do, but still have a lot of things they haven’t done because that content doesn’t appeal to them.
Me for example, I have zero interest in crafting in GWII and I have only tryed World vs. World a few times since launch. Even though those are huge parts of this game it is not something that will keep me playing, because they don’t interest me.
And yes, ArenaNet has done something wonderful. I don’t feel obligated to play the game, in fact I could leave for a year and by the time I came back there would be even more content for me to experience. THAT’S how you make people want to play a game.

Your post confuses me.
You say it is too easy, yet you think the game is for hardcore players.
So, to answer the question you asked in the title: No. GWII is not against casual players.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zkT2uZAGA – GW2 – A world of wonder
The answer is… no. Not really.
I’d rather have more elites to choose from, or better the existing elites (charrzooka for example is just plain stupid, the mortar for the Engineer, etc).
The Charrzooka may seem stupid to you, but the racials are based on fluff rather than power.
What’s the point in having more than one race if some are more powerful than others?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zkT2uZAGA – GW2 – A world of wonder
What exactly is wrong with this?
Perhaps I am overlooking something, but all I see is a list of cosmetics, along with a few conviencies added to the gem store.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zkT2uZAGA – GW2 – A world of wonder
I love this change and hope for more of this to come, especially since I have a Norn and I want to see my tattoos, and of course show off my muscles. And for my Charr, as our fur makes us stand out from the crowd.
As for the people who are worried about people running around naked, I think that being able to costumize your character this way really adds a personal touch.
The only thing I think shouldn’t hideable is pants.
People were worried about stupid names when they found out that you can have multiple names in GWII, but I have only seen a few silly names so far.
Plus, this will most likely make the artists push even harder when creating new armour sets, as they now have to look good enough for people to actually want to wear them, rather than being forced to due to it being the only piece that would match a specific set.

How exactly can you say that people “leave” when they don’t cancel a subscription or something similair to that?
What if they’re just taking a long break?
Also, I know several people that only play a few times per month or per week. Not everyone has time to play every single day.
Oh, and my guild has been growing in the last few months. My guild defies your statement.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zkT2uZAGA – GW2 – A world of wonder
Perhaps I misunderstood what you meant in regards to the Personal Story, but if what you meant was that you thought that the updates that would occour after the launch of the game would change the Personal Story, then I’m afraid that won’t happen.
The Personal Story is “complete”. It is a single story that involves you and some lore charactes.
So if we are going to experience a new story in the future, it will definitely not be a part of the Personal Story that we had at launch.
In regards to the living story content, I think ArenaNet is trying to build up a form of hype or something similair to that when adding new PvE content.
This is of course just my speculation, but I think that they want to build up the content over time, rather than throwing all of it in our faces at once, and then tell us how it actually came into being.
But when it comes to content being added, I think, and this is just my own opinion, that people need to be more flexible and patient with it. We are not paying a subscription in order to play GWII which means we are not nessecarily entitled to new free content.
We paid for the content that was available at launch, not the content that would be added in the future.

You can explore the cities if you just want some XP. It will also give you more of an indication of how to get around in this game.
You can also go to the other starting zones and quest there if you want.
By the way, I strongly recommend that you try out each profession before you really start. Don’t just go:" I played a warrior once, therefore I MUST play a warrior now".
I played a warrior for 5½ year in WoW and by the time GWII was out I had become so sick of basic warrior melee combat. I needed something new and refreshing so I was amazed by the Elementalist profession, which is the profession of my main.
Even now, I have been playing since the 28th of August, I just tried playing a Necromancer today for the first time and it felt so right for me.
And you may want to check out the videos of Guild Wars 2 that the Yogscast made on Youtube, they will really help you out if you are a new player.
Good luck OP, I hope you get to enjoy this wonderful game as much as possible.
