Has GW2 ruined other mmo's ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Naus the Gobbo.5172

Naus the Gobbo.5172

I don’t think I will say it has ruined other MMOs for me, but it has definitely raised the bar for what an MMO must have for me to get into it.

I can no longer get into MMOs that:

1. Have a static world. The dynamic events in GWII really makes the world feel alive, even if some of them restart way too quickly

2. Have static combat. Action orientated combat is a must for me now.

3. Have a subscription model.

4. Have exclamation mark quests. I want to explore the world and have the quest come to me. Sadly this means I will never be able to play Wildstar.

5. Forces me to grind in order to get into PvP. The PvP in GWII may not be the best, but it definitely has the best system ever. Everyone is max level, has the same gear and all spells unlocked? Yes please!

6. Doesn’t allow me to level up with freedom. The list of things that you can do to level up in GWII is ridicolously long compared to other games.

7. Has a short view distance. Does it really matter that there are no loading screens between zones if the view distance is so short that you can’t see the next zone until you are in it?

The only major problems I have with GWII are:

1. You can’t change your race.
2. There are no items that turn you into other races and allows you to fight as that race while in combat.
3. There are only two “sets” of items you can swap to. Why can’t I have multiple sets of armour that I can swap to when I feel like it? I’m a skin collector so this is such a pain for me.
4. You can’t transmute town clothes with normal armour.

Temporary content is fine

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Naus the Gobbo.5172

Naus the Gobbo.5172

I don’t think it’s nessecarily that much about temporary content or permanent content.

I think it’s more about people who only want to do things that make their character more powerful.
They see a lot of content being added, but because it won’t allow them to progress it makes them think the content is a waste.
People would do the content regardless of whether they liked it or not if it made their characters more powerful. Did they add a new dungeon? Perhaps I hate the mechanics of that particular dungeon but I “need” to do it otherwise I’ll fall behind.

But the game needs more permanent content. Some people experienced all of it very quickly.

As much as I have enjoyed the holiday events, of which there have been many now, I have to say I think it would have been better for the game’s health if they had focused on making stuff like new dungeons, large group events and explorable maps.

I think a more likly scenario is this:

You buy a race change pack that takes effect on the login screen (i.e. before you select which character to play). You are only able to use it on characters who have completed the entire personal story. You lose your cultural armor and have to buy a new set.

Why would you have to lose your cultural armour?
I doubt many people would want to farm them twice.

Happy With Your Characters?

I currently have three main characters that I play on, but I am only really happy with two of them – the charr and the asura.

The third one is a norn and the only reason I chose norn was to get the cultural armour and be able to transform into a bearman.
I should never have chosen norn, I just can’t stand playing a human but the cultural armour and their way of living was simply too entising.

If we could change race I would instantly change it to either a charr or asura.

Race change - personal story - check box

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Naus the Gobbo.5172

Naus the Gobbo.5172

Hello.
I would like to ask a simple question about race changing.

Would it be possible for ArenaNet to add a check box for our personal story and allow us to change our race?

For example:
You click on the Race Change Kit and you then costumize your character.
After that you get a list of all the personal story missions, for the new race you have chosen, up to the mission you currently are at, and then you just click on the missions you want to.

Orders(aka. the Vigil etc.) wouldn’t have to be a problem, cus they could just make it so you couldn’t change your order.

And cultural armour would just be converted to the cultural armour of the new race you chose

Would this be possible to make or is it too complicated?

RNG skins now tradeable.

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Naus the Gobbo.5172

Naus the Gobbo.5172

We know the RNG boxes sell A LOT, though. And that the main reason to buy them are the skins. If ArenaNet allows people to trade the skins, it will reward lucky people (who play the RNG gamble, get a skin and sell it for a fortune), and grinders who farmed a lot of gold and can make fortunes flipping the skins. All the while giving less money to ArenaNet.

IMO, it would have been better to just sell the skins in the Gem Store and keep them untradeable. Less RNG, more honest to players, ArenaNet still gets money and grinders can buy gems with gold anyway. Everyone wins.

I don’t think that is nessecarily true.

Back during Wintersday you could buy the weapon skins from the gem store and I’ve never seen just one person wielding one of those weapons.
It could of course be because they weren’t very pleasing to look at and quite ridicolous, but after they started selling skins through rng boxes I’ve seen more people using them.

That said, I wish we could just directly buy them.

Character Bonding Experience...?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Naus the Gobbo.5172

The personal story really makes me bond with my characters.

Sadly it means that I will only really bond with three characters, as there are only three orders.
So when my three main characters all are level 80(which 2/3 already are) I will have to stop doing the personal story on my other characters once the orders come into play.

But the amazing character customization we have in the character creation is also key for me.

Dynamic events also help me quite a bit. I don’t farm events, I just experience those that are evident as I explore.
I remember doing the frozen maw on my elementalist and I remember fighting the centaur boss in Harathi Highlands on my warrior as well as the Ascalon Settlement in Gendarran Fields being overtaken by centaurs.

What's new?

Naus the Gobbo.5172

I have my doubts about the Living Story, but here is the difference between how ArenaNet deals with content updates and how other MMOs deal with content updates:

Guild Wars 2: Every 2 weeks I can log in to the game and have something new to do. It may not be a whole lot, but it is fresh content.

Other MMOs: Once a patch hits I get a lot of new content. But after perhaps three weeks, maybe even less than two, I have already experienced all that content.
Now I have to wait about 5 months before having anything new to do.

Perhaps you don’t like how ArenaNet has dealt with the Living Story so far, but they are just getting started.
And since you aren’t paying for the game I think it is reasonable for you to be a little patient.

Nothing is more awesome than being forced to log out of the game because you have died and haven’t enough coin to revive at the nearest uncontested waypoint.

If you don’t save at least 1 gold in your inventory to waypoint to places, you probably deserve your fate lol. I admit that I was in this situation a couple of times, but I quickly learned to keep aside some money for waypointing, and it helps a ton.

Not everyone has the gold to just “save 1 gold” on all characters at all times.

They should absolutely not be removed. If anything their cost should be increased.

If you allow people to never be in the world, they won’t. If waypoints were free you would never see anyone out in the world, because people would just port to where they want to go.
The fact that it is costly means you are more likely to see people out in the world because they don’t want to use their precious coins.

This is an MMO. It wouldn’t be an MMO if you never saw other people.

Just look at WoW. Because of the flying mounts(and the fact that you have no reason to go outside of a city) you will never see anyone out in the open world.
Does that sound like an MMO experience to you?

A question about future zones.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Naus the Gobbo.5172

Naus the Gobbo.5172

Chances are if they bring back zones like Elona, Cantha, Crystal Desert, they will be in future Expansions/Chapters, and become a permanent part of the game world.(Well Crystal Desert might be more of an update kind of thing instead of a whole Chapter/Expansion) I am wondering how they will handle it though. Will it be like Guild Wars 1? Where they release a chapter that can be played apart from the original game (Ala Don’t need Guild Wars to play Guild Wars: Factions).

I honestly liked that set up a lot, and with the the way zones work (Scale your level down to match the zone) It would work great in this game. Granted, it didn’t ruin GW1, as being max level didn’t mean much, but that idea could still work in this game easily. Not to mention, when the new chapters came out, you didn’t need to be max level, or even complete the other Chapter(s) to travel there. So it was lower level friendly.

But all in all, to answer your question, those are huge area’s. Continents. About as big as Tyria if not a lil’ smaller, or a lil’ bigger. If they come in the game (They probably will) They’re going to be like Tyria, with zones, and new quests, new Main Story arch, etc. I just hope it’s like a “Chapter” like they did in Guild Wars 1, instead of a full blown expansion.

They said early on that if they do expansions or anything, they will require the base game. They will be for max level players and expand the level cap and would not be playable until after GW2 vanilla has been completed.

It will not be a standalone game, but an actual expansion (like Eye of the North).

When did they say they would increase the level cap?

A question about future zones.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Naus the Gobbo.5172

Naus the Gobbo.5172

Hello.

I apologize if this question has already been asked and answered, but I haven’t been able to find any posts that answered it.

When we recieve new zones in the future will they be like Southsun Cove and Labyrinthine Cliffs, or will they be like the zones that were available at launch with quests, points of interests, vistas and skill points that we need for our world completion?

Personally I would prefer to get quests and vistas etc. that I need for world completion, but I can understand that some people wouldn’t like it as they would need to put in more time to get 100% world completion.

Perhaps it’s just me, but I think it would be better to add these things to Southsun Cove and Labyrinth Cove and future zones as you would have an incentive to go there and probably would find other players to do the events with, rather than just avoiding the events because no one is around.

I’m sorry if it sounds like I’m complaining, but when I hear people talking about the Crystal Desert, Cantha, Elona and other zones they look forward to see it worries me that those zones will die once the living story moves to a new location.

Thanks for reading.

Is GW2 front loaded?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Naus the Gobbo.5172

I think it boils down to what you think is fun and exciting to do.

Lets assume you are max level, have finished your personal story, have world completion and have the best gear available; What would you like to do next if you can’t progress your character further? Are you interested in jumping puzzles? Events? PvP? Crafting? Lore? Achievements? Skins? Dungeons?

I don’t mean to generalize you, but I think that most people(who aren’t familair with GWII) approach all new MMOs with the mindset that the only thing worth doing is progressing your character and that if you aren’t doing that you are basicly wasting your time.

But I guess that in a sense you can call the game front loaded, in that very little content is gated to max level.
But in my opinion it is one of GWII’s strengths. You can just jump in and play with your friends. No need to grind for ages just to have fun.

What is "Range" actually in Gw2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Naus the Gobbo.5172

Naus the Gobbo.5172

It is my understand that there are no professions in GWII that are made for a single combat type.

All professions can play both at melee range and far range. Sure there will always be a more viable option due to lack of proper balance. For example warriors do much more damage with a greatsword than any other weapon, as far as I’m concerned.

Personally I much prefer this system, because it makes combat interesting and it can lead to some truly epic fights if mechanics are implemented properly.

You say that warriors shouldn’t be good while using a bow or a gun, why is that?
A warrior fights with whatever weapon he/she pleases or have available at that time, why must it be a huge hammer for you to call it a warrior?

This may be a poor example but Gandalf from Lord of the Rings is always referred to as a wizard, but he has a sword as well as a staff. Does that sword automatically make it impossible for him to be a wizard?

GW2 unlikely to get expansions [Interview]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Naus the Gobbo.5172

Naus the Gobbo.5172

No expansion will make it a dead game within half a year or less. No amount of living story can give you the effect what a new expansion does.

Can I have your crystal ball please?

Why, because as far as I can tell, instead of getting content all in one big blob (expansion), it’s evolving and coming to us in stages. Is that so difficult to envision? o.o

Well, I think the issue is that the content on offer isn’t actually comparable to what you’d get in a true MMORPG expansion. Even if you took 2 years worth of the kind of content we’ve been getting and offered it all at once, it still wouldn’t be on the same level as a WoW expansion.

For example, in WoW’s latest expansion you got:
- 16 new raid bosses at launch, with 3 difficulty levels.
- 9 new 5-man dungeons with 3 difficulty levels.
- 7 new scenarios (like a normal mode dungeon, but for 1-3 people).
- About 1400 new quests in an entirely new continent.
- About 900 new achievements.
- 2 new PvP maps, 1 new arena map.
- The usual mass of armor skins, weapon skins, mounts etc.
- Pet battle system.
- A new class.
- A new playable race.
- Increased level cap.

Then you have the content patches throughout the expansion’s life cycle on top of that.

As much as I’m impressed (and surprised) by the frequency of updates in GW2, to say it’s the equivalent of an expansion being spread out over time is just plain inaccurate.

You should not compare WoW to GWII. And parts of what you just listed are things you especially shouldn’t compare between them.

1.A. Increased level cap – Blizzard increases the level cap to make people grind for a long time and make them stay subscribed for longer.
1.B. ArenaNet doesn’t want us to grind, and there is no reason for us to do it since we don’t pay a subscription.

2.A. Raids and dungeons – Every time Blizzard adds a new raid or a new dungeon they make the old ones 100% useless. There may be over 100 dungeons and over 50 raids in WoW, but there will only be 1-3 of each at one time that you will actually get rewarded for completing at max level or close to max level.
2.B. In GWII you are scaled down to the level of the zone/dungeon and are properly rewarded for completing it. You will get gear appropriate to your level. Even though there only are about 32 dungeon experiences in GWII the game launched with a lot more VIABLE content than WoW has even after 9 years.
This also goes for open world areas. WoW may have more, but once you outlevel a zone that zone has zero value to you. There are a lot of starting zones for example, but once you have outleveled one of them all of the others, including the previous, are useless.
That means if you complete the entirety of Durotar all other starting zones won’t matter, which means that so much time and resources has gone into a making a zone you won’t ever go to.

3.A. Gear – Blizzard only makes new models for helms and shoulderpads, the rest of the gear use the same models that were available at launch. Heck, there is not even a model for breastplate armour, it is just paint on the chest.
This means they can make a lot of new armour sets, because they just have to make a new helm and shoulderpads and just paint the rest of the gear.
3.B. ArenaNet makes new models for every piece of armour, which means it will take longer time and more resources to make just a single set.

By the way, I am not trying to defend ArenaNet or anything like that, I too would prefer a traditional expansion.
In my opinion this is simply too risky.
It sounds great on paper, but lets see how they pull it off. If it works then it may be something other MMOs will do, but if it fails I don’t see a very bright future for this game.

I don’t mean any disrespect to the people in charge of the Living Story or ArenaNet, but in my opinion you are doing a horrible job in regards to making the world feel living AND adding content to the game at the same time.

The biggest problem(in my opinion) with the Living Story is that those of us who stay and play the game on a very regular basis get to experience a lot of new content, but people who take breaks for months log in and think that no new content has been added, because there is nothing new for them to experience.

In my opinion it would be much better if you in the future just added the dungeons as permanent content, but let the story npcs stay and tell the tale of how the new content came to be.
You could just make some unique skins as a reward for completing those challenges when the content is fresh, and then take them out when the next chapter is added.

Because then everyone would get to experience the content, and the world would still feel alive because there would be changes added all the time.

If the F&F dungeon was still here it would feel much more alive, because that dungeon wasn’t here at release. Now it’s gone and everything is back to normal, if you get what I mean.

It’s perfectly fine to have content that goes away, but in moderation. Do it like WoW used to.
Have a massive event when something is about be added. Like they did with the opening of the gates of Ahn’Qiraj. Or the scourge invasion. Those are events that people still talk about to this day. The only event in GWII that has had such an impact on the community was, so far, the Lost Shores event.

Sorry if it sounds like I’m just whining, but I really think this would be much better for the game and I really want this game to last for years to come.

Show your character(s) face(s)!

When I look at the character costumization available in this game I wonder how many people have exactly the same face.

So, why don’t you post a screenshot of the face(s) of your character(s)?

Here are the faces of my thief, elementalist, warrior, necromancer and engineer:

So do you actually look at others armor?

The last time I actually paid much attention to others’ armour was in vanilla WoW and during The Burning Crusade when epic gear was epic. I remember the first time I saw someone with Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros, and I couldn’t believe my own eyes.

Now I just glance at peoples’ armour and go:“Eh, nice”.
But perhaps that’s because in GWII there are no items to show off any kind of skill, you just farm for it.

In fact the only reason I don’t concider legendaries in GWII as legendary is because everyone could just whip out their wallet and get it.

Although I do value the temporary weapons much higher than other weapons, because so few people have them.

But I do spend a ton of time on my own looks.

Female Charr don’t have breasts or visible nipples.

Some armour sets, like Gladiator and Barbarian, allow us to see their chest.

Yet they wear a piece of cloth to cover their chest when they take off their armour.

The same goes for Asura women, except they wear bathing suits.

New player starting question

I’d recommend you to always start a new character by exploring the main cities, aka. Divinity’s Reach, Hoelbrak, Rata Sum, The Grove, The Black Citadel and Lion’s Arch.

If you start at level 2 you will be about level 6 when you are done and that will make starting zones much easier to navigate through level wise.

Halloween.
Wintersday.
Super Adventure Box.
Dragon Bash.
Southsun Cove.
Fractals of the Mists.
Living Story.
2 PvP maps.
New events.
New voice acting.
New soundtracks.
Updating reward systems.
Guild Missions.
Costume brawl.
Crab Toss.
Moa Racing.

Yep. Seems like they only have 5 people working on the game.

Edit: I’ll just add more stuff as people point out stuff I have forgotten.

I too have been having this problem.

I thought it only was for the holographic monsters from Dragon Bash, but I guess I’m wrong.

What keeps you clockin in to Gw2

My complete list of reasons why I keep playing GWII would be a giant wall of text, so I’ll just list a few:

1. No subscription.
2. I still have a ton of content yet to experience. (I’ve only tried two story mode dungeons, haven’t touched crafting, only found a few jumping puzzles, I only have 1 level 80 so I still have a ton of personal story from other branches/races/orders yet to experience, have never done a fractal, I haven’t seen all event bosses… I could go on.
3. I feel at home in GWII. It is the perfect game for me.
4. ArenaNet keeps adding more content to the game and I love the holiday events.
5. Because of the dynamic events I can level up multiple characters and in every zone I go to I can have a new experience because of events I haven’t seen before.

Why charrs are ignored?

Naus the Gobbo.5172

Nobody likes charrs, that’s why >:(

They are stupid, smelly and probably have fleas so why waste time with them?

They are also the reason we don’t have capes =(

I don’t think that is nessecarily true.

Capes were ingame during the early beta, and they worked quite well with Charr. They moved around with the tail just like their cultural armour does.

I would like to have the kids of each race available as minis.

I want a cub for my Charr, and I can imagine roleplayers would love the ability to have a child of their race. Though there wouldn’t be one for Sylvari.

But most of all, a race change kit.
