When you look at the real dollar value it would take to outright purchase a legendary, it starts to become clear that Anet is dropping the ball in a bad way on delivering a product that holds any sort of value. It doesn’t matter if you used a credit card or spent hours grinding in CoF, or just spent your days in world, if you have a legendary, there is a value assigned to it that is equivalent to hundreds of dollars in US currency, and Anet needs to start treating legendaries like it.

OP, the reason they will never do this is in your own data.

26,250g is approximately $14,500US (using current data from gw2spidy on gold → US$ value of $0.55 per gold)

Legendaries are a cash cow for Anet, and they won’t give up that significant source of income.

First, I like the idea, though it has some issues.
Second, the part about opening up new areas is going to happen likely sometime just after the sun burns out, so your primary changes need to be reworked a bit to focus on the few zones we have now.

I think there are many reasons that people don’t do DE’s. One of them is loot, or in this case, lack-of. The reward for finishing an event is not remotely close enough to get people who are after loot to want to do them. Heck, there is more profit in failing several events right now as it is.

Anet created a massive drought on loot from the start, thinking they could force people to their cash shop by making it next to impossible to obtain things in world. Now someone has woken up and made changes, unfortunately they’ve gone too far in one tiny direction, and the result is chaos.

I like your idea though, don’t get me wrong. It would be great to see some better reward tied into DE.

… not to mention it’s very expensive.

This one quote from your comments is the single reason you will never see legendary weapons changed from soul-bound. Anet makes too much money off of them.

I meant in-game gold. You’re assuming enough people to count buy gems with real currency and convert them into gold.

Every time you buy something on the TP, whether it’s gold made in game or via gems, gold is removed from the in game economy, which affects the economy overall. As I’ve said in comments elsewhere recently, the numbers touted by Anet a week or so ago show that roughly $1.2mil dollars worth of gold was removed from the economy in game in just repair fees due to deaths caused by one mob type.
I’m all for people making gold in game and using it to purchase things. It hurts Anets RL wallet every time, but you can’t escape the taxes they charge.
On top of that there are simply a huge number of people who pay real cash for their shinies (if this wasn’t true, things would change rapidly until this was fact, it’s how their model works).

Balance loot

in Suggestions

Posted by: Neural.1824

Neural.1824

A lot of the trouble with champion zergs, Scarlet invasions, the Crown Pavillion, etc. is based on the absolute drought of loot that has been experienced over the past year. First we had Farming Punishment thrown on us, then the problems with drops in Nov/Dec/Jan timeframe that were supposedly “bugs”, then the introduction of highly desireable items, along with the growth of the userbase. When the champ loot changes and Queen’s Jubilee hit, there’s no wonder why people went overboard with their play time and so on. Someone at Anet must really get off on watching people scramble for table scraps. Probably some monetization megalomaniacal mindset, but I digress.
What Anet can’t seem to get right is balance. We don’t need everything for no effort, and we certainly don’t need it within two hours, but we also don’t need to be calculating up a 4 year time frame of playing an hour or so a day just to achieve the goal of crafting something. It’s not just legendaries. I was looking up Mjolnir earlier. 350 Charged Lodestones. At the rate those drop for me, I’ve had around 4 since October of last year, and to build Mjolnir, you need 350 of them. They simply don’t drop.
It’s alright for something to not drop as much, but when you get to the level of some T6 mats and such, it’s so out of proportion it’s easy to question the mental capacity of the person behind the design. Sure, there’s a supply of things like lodestones, but it’s not the demand that is driving the prices up, it’s the discrepancy between drop types.
Add to this the ridiculous fact it’s far simpler to just farm champs or run scarlet invasions to make the gold to flat out buy the items, but at that point, why bother crafting at all? Just save the gold and buy the kitten ed thing outright. Everything on the TP has a max of some infinitesimal profit over material and tax costs anyway, so it’s not like you’re saving money by buying the components.
Bottom line on it all is that Anet needs to pull their head out of their kitten and wake up to the balance issues which are creating most of the problems they are facing right now in the first place. That or they should just remove crafting completely, because they obviously don’t “get it”.

Better boss fights

in Suggestions

Neural.1824

Fergus: I understand where you are coming from there, but what I’m getting at is the removal of mechanics that can be documented as a simple “this is how you fight x boss”.

I’d like to see a list of multiple attacks for each boss, and have the boss randomly choose 3 to 5 of those on spawn. Having additional mobs as part of the mechanic is great, but I see one of the main issues with boredom being that everything can be written down in a short paragraph on how to fight something.

Even veterans should have an attack set. This is something that adds spice to the game without driving up the development cost of the AI. Yes, there is a lot of work involved in creating the attacks, but in the long run it creates more replay value.

Unfortunately, game companies and their investors aren’t interested in innovation, they are interested in profit. As a result, we get the same garbage to choose from when looking for a game. No-one wants to create quality anymore, Anet included. They just want to push out garbage that is “acceptable” as fast as possible.

Better boss fights

Neural.1824

One of the biggest issues I see in the MMO’s I’ve played, including GW2, is that unless you go in blind, a boss fight, heck even normal mobs, is predictable.
You learn the patterns, you learn the attacks, the weaknesses, etc.

This also results in players narrowing down the best set-ups for each situation. Thus we have “go zerk or go home”.

All that could be thrown for a loop if the players had to be ready for more than just a few encounter types. It could result in longer (or sometimes shorter) boss fights as well.

What needs to be done is some randomization of the attacks.

Using dungeons as an example, let’s consider Kohler on AC Path 3.

Kohler has a neat attack where he pulls you in and then plays blender. That’s fine. Cost me a few silver, but I learned how to avoid it and what to watch for. You can see what’s going to happen, and even prepare ahead of time for the fight if needed. Choose utilities, weapons, etc.

I’d like to see Anet make bosses a lot more complex. Give someone like Kohler a pool of 30 attacks and defenses, then for each instance/event, have him choose 3. Make them different enough that people actually have to figure out what they are, and form a strategy to get past it with the setups they have.

This would require a reduction in damage on some of the “one-shot” attacks that Anet is so fond of, but Anet is going to have to wake up and realize that gimmicks and cheap-shots are the hallmark of poor design and lack of imagination.

Same would apply for open-world dynamic event bosses like Dwayna’s statue. Give Malchor a pool of 30 attacks to use, and let him choose between 3 and 5 of them when he possesses the statue. Get the players to work together and have to strategize on the spot instead of just reading about the one or two constant mechanics that the boss uses.

World boss events like Jormag could benefit from this as well. The upcoming buff to Teq may be a step in the right direction, but it won’t be long before his attacks are known, right down to the pattern.

The ease of memorization of boss attacks and such has plagued MMO’s for years. It’s time to break that mold and let the players adapt to some unexpected variety.

Yes, because Anet definitely benefits from you missing out on putting more currency into the game, making the Gem:Gold ratio higher.

Right?
Right?
Right?

If it was just me, your sarcasm would make sense, but tell me, if it happens to thousands of users, then what?

By their own numbers, in their first year, just one type of mob in this game removed approximately $1.2million worth of gold from the in game economy in just the repair fees people had to pay to make up for being killed by them.
How much loot are they not distributing by allowing critical bugs to persist then? World event loot includes at least one yellow, and now T7 mats.

With all the fabrications they’ve pulled over the past year, along with the unscrupulous methods they use to part people with their in game money, it’s no stretch to see how they would ignore certain bugs for that same purpose.

Frustrated with the Lack of Communication

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Neural.1824

What frustrates me about this is that there has been 0 communication on why they made this change and the spin put on those patch notes to make it look like a bug.

Ok so most of your post was a bit complainy. But I will agree that ANet hasn’t been very communicative, well technically since the game launched. Anet could probably prevent a lot of posts like this with a weekly blog post. And not a marketing post either, simply one of the devs sitting down and telling us what they’re considering, why they did what they did etc.

One of the best suggestions in a long time, and yet another one to add to the long list of great suggestions that will get ignored by Anet.
All they care about is their LS content now, everything else is just “when we have time” which they rarely do because of the insane amount of work going into the LS content (as evidenced by how rushed feeling and buggy it can be when they implement it).

Crafting is a boring, tedious chore.

in Crafting

Posted by: Neural.1824

Neural.1824

The MMO Vanguard tried to create a crafting system that encouraged you to make decisions while crafting. People could build their own houses and so on. Even so it was essentially repetitive and ultimately dull. Crafting in all other games has been dull from start to finish and it shouldn’t be the only way to get top line gear.

There is no skill or capability involved in getting ascended gear. It is all about sinking time into collecting money, sinking time into farming events and dungeons, and sinking time into crafting.

The issue of better-gear only through crafting is valid, especially since GW2 seems to have been marketed in the “play your way” arena. Anet would like come back and say that “Ascended weapons are also available through drops” or whatever (which, if I recall actually has not been implemented yet). They are good at twisting facts to fit their lack of effort and design thought.

Outside of that issue, crafting is simply not for everyone. Vanguard had one of the best crafting systems, in my opinion, because just like real crafting, you had a chance at failing or messing up. Risk was rewarded if successful. Or you could take moderate risk and progress slowly.

The fact is, however, crafting takes a certain mindset. Many in GW2 seem to think that rewards should only be given for fighting other players or champions. They would have gathering removed completely if not for the fact that they can make some side money by selling the materials. Crafters are often more patient, but just as goal oriented as fighters. Crafting in Vanguard and other games is what got me started on my RL hobby of jewelry-making. I’m just someone that enjoys it. I like working with my hands. Doing so virtually is fun because it doesn’t cost nearly as much (silver is not cheap these days). In the long run, I don’t think that people who enjoy crafting and people who enjoy fighting will every truly merge into one mindset.

Again, with the exception of crafting being the only method to access certain gear types, crafting itself simply is “not for everyone”, and that’s why often times it is glossed over in game development. It’s not a mainstream thing in games.

No, no /sarc tag on this one, I’m serious.

It would add some good versatility to the short bow, for starters. Rangers could put away the longbow and go with a SB/GS combo more effectively. Thieves would be able to hit targets further out than daggers reach. Warriors could benefit in both longbow and rifle marksmanship.

The main problem i have with these T7 mats is the fact that they’re forcing me to do things i hate such as jumping puzzles and braindead dragons. That plus seeing 24h countdown after crafting only one mat is just~~~~~ Now if a new dungeon was added and every single T7 mat (excluding those that need to be refined like the ones with a countdown) i would be very happy and enjoy farming the dungeon with a goal instead of pressing Space 10 000 times per jumping puzzle. Anet doesn’t give us enough way to acquire stuff and looks like after a year they haven’t learned anything.

Ok, I see your point, but wasn’t that sort of the original idea with legendaries? That you have to run a wide variety of content (WvW, dungeons, open world, etc.) to obtain the required materials to build one? I hated WvW, especially the jumping puzzle. I’m not a PvP type person, yet it’s required for the legendary build. So I forced myself through it.
By its nature, having crafting paths for long term weapons that cover all aspects of the game is going to include things that you don’t like doing.

As for countdown timers, Eve Online is a game you should avoid, just a side note.

The problem is that Anet needed to balance between the casual player and the hardcore player. I think perhaps the time gating plus the account bound status on materials was perhaps over-the-top, but as far as taking an effort to balance casual vs. hardcore when it comes to the ability to craft something, I think they did a decent job.

And yes. Anet has come up short in providing multiple ways to obtain things, but even still, each T7 item has more than one location you can obtain it from.

Is failure a desired state for humans?

Arenanet has the mindset that if they provide “challenging” content, people will open their wallets and buy gems, no loot or rewards required.
It seems only recently that they’ve started to see the financial damage they are doing to themselves by taking that attitude.

More crafting? Do these devs ever get another ideas of acquiring items? What about adding hard mode to current dungeons, collect relics (that aren’t tradable) and combine them to build a precursor? I don’t want to craft more of your kitten! All they do is release items that you craft, so what’s the point of even going outside LA… i swear these people—-

Are you ware that crafting requires materials gathered from around the game’s world and zones? That you cannot obtain those things in LA unless you purchase from the trading post (although account bound ones you cannot). But another thing to note is that in order to purchase you’ll need to obtain gold, once again requiring to leave LA in order to obtain.

Your ranting argument is baseless and more or less that you don’t like crafting. Well,….I’m sorry, but that’s how it’s going to be. Either take that, or the other two options are to go and find one from a chest in the game’s world (.5% chance?) and/or purchase from another lucky player in the game for 100’s of gold.

you can buy them on something called TP, just like 99.999% of other things in the game. And don’t even tell me its costly because if you’re going for legendary you probably have enough money, plus the over nerfed world is so nerfed that buying from TP is what you’ll do anyway. If the precursor was created with relics and there was no way to buy these relics, only then it would feel like you had a goal. It could be much more than just collecting relics in hard mode tho, relics would be one step of the three or five needed. Do anything but make me craft even more

Some of what you’ve said seems to contradict other comments you’ve made on Ascended crafting.
T7 mats are account bound, and you have different sources for them, thus there is a solid “goal” involved with getting one of those weapons. I believe it should be the same for the legendary weapons.
As for precursors, Anet’s been a whole lot of talk about scavenger hunts and crafting, but no action. I’ll believe it when I see it.
If I had to come up with 500g worth of mats that could be found or harvested in world, I’d do that in a heartbeat over paying someone an exorbitant price for a precursor.
What I want most is a reasonable path to a guaranteed result. Not slot machine gambling with the mystic toilet or drops in world, and not “solo Teq 5 times without dying” either.
Personally I think that if Anet is going to make a set path to obtaining a precursor, that path should involve T7 mats, but not be more difficult than it currently is to get a legendary. Sadly, it will likely end up being ridiculously difficult, because Anet makes more money off the TP transactions if more people just give up and purchase. Anything to drive the people to pull out their wallet.

I dont like my dreamer footsteps

I love the new footfalls on The Dreamer, but I’m building The Dreamer knowing that Anet will change it up at their whim. I could get the item completed, pull it out of the mystic forge and the very next day have Anet remove the unicorns from it completely. That’s how Anet operates.

Increase the ori and ancient wood nodes

More ancient wood, but no additional Orichalcum. I noticed quite a disparity in loot with the Scarlet invasions. The scrap metal drops and such were revealing a decent increase in overall orichalcum ore intake when salvaging, but not ancient wood.

Making changes right now though is not the best idea, because the amount of ancient wood should increase with the rush to salvage every blue/green on the planet for luck essence. Unfortunately this will eventually taper off as many accounts hit 300%

I think they should consider increasing the wood nodes, but Orichalcum is acceptable as is. Salvaging exotics for Globs of Dark Matter will keep the Ori and Ancient wood value high, and the lack of supply will keep the value of exotics up.

Note that with the new patch, blue and green name items will be salvageable for a chance to get items which help improve your account level magic find. So selling them may not be your only option.

Salvaging Exotics - new patch

Does anyone know if salvaging Exos will result in :

1. Chance at Glob(s) of Dark Matter only

2. Chance at Glob(s) of Dark Matter OR Glob(s) of Ectoplasm

3. Chance at Glob(s) of Dark Matter AND/OR Glob(s) of Ectoplasm

?

4. 0.000000000000000000000000000000000001% chance of Dark Matter, and 0.00000000001% chance of Ectoplasm

We need more ways to get T6 Mats and Gobs...

Anet probably won’t rest until a single glob of ectoplasm is an average of 1gold in price. I like how they did the new crafting, but with no adjustments to drop rates of T6 mats, legendary weapons are going to push towards well over $1000US in value for outright purchase.
